Our Loch Ness tour from Invergordon promises to enchant, whether you’re a veteran visitor or are travelling to the Highlands for the first time. As soon as you disembark from your ship at the Invergordon cruise port, around an hour after the ship arrives, you will be met by one of our friendly local guides, who you’ll recognise by their Historic & Scenic Tours placard bearing your Surname. You’ll be escorted to one of our comfortable minibuses, where complimentary snacks and bottles of water will be made available for your tour.

Beauly & Beauly Priory

As we leave Invergordon cruise port, our Loch Ness tour from Invergordon starts by travelling west past the town of Alness and over the Cromarty Firth towards Beauly, where we will arrive at Beauly Priory, a beautiful ancient monastery that now lies in ruins but retains an air of reverence and mystery.

Loch Ness, Drumnadrochit & Urquhart Castle

From there it’s on to Loch Ness, through the town of Drumnadrochit and towards the famous Urquhart Castle and its visitor center. The castle is a truely romantic ruin, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the loch. The castle is surrounded on all sides by waters over 600-feet deep, where the legendary Loch Ness Monster is said to make her home. Take your time wandering the historic ruins and learn more about its amazing history , before our Loch Ness tour from Invergordon picks up again, this time towards the City of Inverness, the capital of the Highlands.

Inverness & The Ness Islands

As we proceed towards Inverness there will be more opportunities for some beautiful shots at spots near Loch Ness, the River Ness and Ness Islands, a group of wooded islands close to the centre of Inverness connected by suspension bridges and popular with visitors.

St. Andrew’s Cathedral, also known as Inverness Cathedral, is our next destination - a beautiful cathedral church dating back to 1869 located near the centre of Inverness. The Anglican Cathedral is the most northerly in the UK , and is an excellent example of local architecture and the Gothic style. Take some time to admire the beautiful stained glass windows and intricately carved stonework.

Our Loch Ness tour from Invergordon then takes us east towards Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre. Culloden famously played host to the bloody Battle of Culloden, the outcome of which had ramifications far outside the local area and is intensively documented at the visitor centre. Get up close and personal with the history of the battle with artefacts, re-enactments and talks by local historians, before heading the short distance to Clava Cairns, an ancient bronze-age cemetery.

Clava Cairns is a deeply sacred place within the landscape of the Highlands is steeped in history, with the first usage of the site thought to date back over 4000 years. Set within a beautiful forested area, there is evidence that ancient peoples returned here again and again; there are even the ruins of a medieval chapel here. The Clava Cairns serves as the inspiration for the fictitious Craigh na Dun standing stones in the book and TV series Outlander , in fact, the famous “cleft stone” that transports the main character Claire back in time can be found here.

From Clava Cairns, it is just a short drive towards Cawdor Castle. Take some time to wander the beautiful walled gardens and natural woodlands while taking in the castle’s extensive history dating back as far as 1180. The castle is a popular destination and a must-see, not least for its connection to the Shakespeare play Macbeth. We will then head back towards Invergordon cruise port, returning at least 1 hour prior to your ship’s departure.

Old village houses can be seen on both banks of the canal, and there are three flags flying outside a house on the right. A man in lifejacket is coiling the rope from the right hand barge around a hook on the ground.

Dunrobin Castle and Falconry Tour from Invergordon Port

The Dunrobin Castle and Falconry Tour from Invergordon Cruise Ship Port begins with a stop in historic Tain. Our next visit is our main destination. We will enjoy Dunrobin Castle and Gardens, and the daily falconry demonstration. Returning south we visit the lovely town of Dornoch. It is known for good shops and is famous for the golf course and 13 th  century Cathedral. Finally we either visit Glenmorangie Distillery, or walk through the woods at the stunning Falls of Shin.

Invergordon History

The castleton on this site was originally called Inverbreakie. The name Invergordon did not appear until the castle was acquired by an outspoken Member of Parliament called Sir William Gordon. He built a planned town nearby and named it after himself. However, the gaelic prefix “Inver” means “at the mouth of”. So he named his town “At the mouth of Gordon”. We think that is so appropriate for an outspoken and immodest MP.

Invergordon Murals

A group calling themselves “Invergordon Off the Wall” launched a community project in 2002. They created about a dozen very large murals around the town in order to highlight the culture and heritage of the area. It has been very successful, creating a visual record of local life. We see local sports; local industry; the lifeboat service; the cultural life of the district; the night the Royal Hotel burned and the Pipe Band on the lawns of Invergordon Castle.

Invergordon Murals - Tours from Invergordon Cruise Port

Invergordon Castle

Invergordon Castle had a long history, originally dating from the 1300’s. Fire destroyed the old castle and a new mansionhouse replaced it in 1872. This new house, however, was demolished in 1928, once the owner found himself in financial difficulty.

Invergordon Naval Museum and Heritage Centre

Invergordon has a British Navy history stretching back to the early 19th century. The Naval Museum does a great job of telling this seafaring history. You’ll find the museum easily because of the wall of sea-themed murals. Here we can learn about the crucial role Invergordon played in both World Wars, and hear about the tragic loss of the ship “Natal” in 1915. She blew up in port, with the loss of nearly 400 crew and locals. Inspectors blamed unstable cordite. The famous Invergordon naval mutiny of 1931 is another of the museum’s fascinating stories. The navy base finally closed in 1956.

Invergordon Whisky

Invergordon has had a long relationship with whisky. Even legal stills have a two hundred year track record in the district because Teaninich Distillery was founded in 1817. It had plenty of illicit competition, but it would be the 1830’s before the next legal rival appeared on the scene.

Dalmore Distillery

Dalmore Distillery, established 1839, sits prettily on the shore of the Cromarty Firth, only a couple of miles from Invergordon. Mackenzies bought it in 1867 and as a result Dalmore began using the Mackenzie emblem and motto. So the bottles now carry the instantly recognisable 12-pointed Royal Stag and the perfect motto for a scotch whisky, Luceo non Uro meaning “I Shine not Burn!” We like the distillery tour Dalmore offers, so sometimes find ourselves there if our guests choose to craft a custom tour with us.

Invergordon Distillery

Invergordon distillery was built in 1961 in order to help tackle the unemployment caused by the navy leaving in 1956. It is one of only six grain distilleries in Scotland (as opposed to the malt distilleries). Their Coffey Stills produce some of the finest grain whisky in the world. A company called Whyte and Mackay acquired the distillery in 1993.

Whyte and Mackay

Whyte and Mackay are an old company, founded in 1844 and based in Glasgow. In 1993 the company was owned by “American Brands” but nowadays Whyte & Mackay is owned by Philipinnes-based Emperador Inc.

If you wish to see and do other things while in Invergordon we can accommodate that too. We can build custom tours from Invergordon Cruise Port adding any other places, activities or experiences for you.

Great guide to Invergordon port. I work there with cruise ships as a guide and ground handler. 2023 looks set to be our busiest year yet. It looks like there will be some changes to the piers used next year with perhaps more use of Saltburn pier. Unfortunately for most of this year the pipe band has been unable to come into the port due to each piper needing to attend a health and safety briefing – let’s hope they get back in for 2023 as it is a great send off. Also cruising out of the Cromarty Firth between the sandstone peaks – the Sutors – back into the North Sea is a good spot to see some Bottlenose dolphins.

Hi, Melanie! Wow, thanks for this super useful info and the updates! I wish you a great 2023 season! 🙂

  • ericacB4108AM 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor experience with owner, organization, and communication. Good tour itself. My Google and Tripadvisor review: TLDR: Messy operation, irresponsible owner, did not communicate effectively and overall left us very frustrated. I realize my review will be in the minority given the positive reviews this company has received, but if I were to book a tour again, I'd avoid this guy at almost any cost. We had a large group of 5 adults and 3 children age 6 (which was indicated on our booking). We arranged to be picked up at our cruise port, but couldn't find our guide when we got off the ship. We waited 45 min and finally another tour operator helped us get in contact with the owner. He blamed us for the miscommunication (even though we had an email confirming and had also called to confirm a few days before). We had to wait another hour for our guide to arrive. This delay caused one in our group to not be able to go. Our guide (not the owner) was wonderful and runs his own operation through highlander private tours. I feel bad that he had to deal with our already grumpy group since it wasn't his fault. He was doing a favor to the owner of this company since they didn't have enough guides. We booked this tour 4 months in advance, and the owner forgot about us I guess until 2 days before and had to call in a favor. Because we had children, we had to make an extra stop so that our guide to comply with local laws with required car seats. He had to buy them at the store, delaying our tour further, even though we had indicated 3 children on our booking. Again, our guide was great and understood our frustration. He tried to fit in as much of our itinerary as possible, but we were unable to see some of the places because of the numerous delays. When we got back to the ship (10 min before departure time), the owner of this company was waiting for us. He argued with my sister (who made the booking) and again tried to pin the blame on us for the miscommunication. She showed him the email thread which confirmed the pickup site, time, date, presence of children, etc and he was still obstinate. We were hoping to get some kind of compensation (at least for the person in our group who had to skip the tour because we started too late), but the owner never contacted us as he said he would, and ignores any attempt at contact now. Book with someone else, that's my advice. There are plenty of other options that won't cause you stress. Read more Written 6 October 2023

We port in Invergordon and thinking of just making our way to Inverness and take a short cruise along Loch Ness

Issue is that my husband cant walk long distances because of arthritis so don't want him to run out of steam getting there

There is a train service between Invergordon and Inverness taking just under an hour-is the train station a short walk from cruise ships?

Jacobite loch ness cruises have various departure points but one most likely is 5 miles south of Inverness

is it worth taking a taxi whole trip from cruise ship or just the 5 mile from Inverness?

Cool Cruiser

The train to Inverness takes about an hour and buses are infrequent so a taxi would be best from there. The train is a more interesting option than a car all the way, but the journey time isn't much different.

You might also consider the cruise from Tomnahurich Bridge which is nearer the station and, to me, looks more interesting.

There's actually very good bus service to Inverness from Invergordon - 2x every hour on the 25 and 25X and often with extra buses on cruise days. There's actually a Jacobite tour that starts at the bus station which would I think would suit your needs perfectly. It's the Sensation tour https://www.jacobite.co.uk/tours/sensation and here's a link to it.

We did this last year and it was quite easy taking the bus 25X to Inverness and then joined the Jacobite tour. Here are some pictures of our day there. Just watch your time for the bus returning to port.
Thanks for the info on the bus ...we are there in a few weeks and need to get to Inverness for the Jacobite tour ....25x bus it is !!!!We were pretty sure this is what we needed to do but it is nice to see it in print lol ...
You are most welcome! The stop for 25X is just a short walk up from port to High Street, make a left and the bus is right there. Enjoy your cruise!
Jldevlin, I just noticed that we were also on the NCL Getaway transatlantic cruise in 2017 and NCL Jewel Transpacific cruise in May this year. :D

The cruise berth has been moved this year and you now walk up to the main street then turn right to get to the bus stop.

Happy to help jldevlin.

Lol ...where are you going next ...Love those sea days !!! Although I did find that the Getaway has much more to do for all the extra sea days we had on that cruise ...

To tell the truth, the Getaway was a little too big for me...but we may take the last Baltic cruise on her and then the transatlantic back to New Orleans next year. Our next cruise will be on Diamond Princess Taiwan/Japan in November. Come home for a few days and then the same ship Yokohama to Singapore. Enjoy Scotland, we did!

We just returned from a Windstar cruise around Scotland. We flew in to Innverness pre-cruise and had a delightful woman take us to Culloden. She asked if we were going to Loch Ness, and we said we hadn't planned on it. She was describing how lovely it was on the east side, and I asked if she would be able to take us and she agreed. She also waited for us 1 1/2 hours at Culloden, drove us around other areas around Loch Ness. She was very reasonable. She may be willing to pick you up at Invergordon. Her name is Ann, her website is http://www.taxisandtoursinverness.co.uk. Enjoy your cruise. It is a beautiful place.

Urquhart Castle AND LOCH NESS

LOCH NESS TOUR . FROM INVERGORDON CRUISE PORT

As soon as you disembark from your cruise ship at the port of Invergordon, around an hour after the ship arrives, you will be met by one of our friendly local guides, who you’ll recognise by their Historic & Scenic Tours placard bearing your Surname

Our Loch Ness tour from Invergordon promises to enchant, whether you’re a veteran visitor or are travelling to the Highlands for the first time.  As soon as you disembark from your cruise ship at the port of Invergordon, around an hour after the ship arrives, you will be met by one of our friendly local guides, who you’ll recognise by their Historic & Scenic Tours placard bearing your Surname.  You’ll be escorted to one of our comfortable minibuses, where complimentary snacks and bottles of water will be made available for your tour.

We’ll start by travelling west past the town of Alness and over the Cromarty Firth towards Beauly, where we will arrive at Beauly Priory,  a beautiful ancient monastery that now lies in ruins but retains an air of reverence and mystery.

Take your time wandering the historic ruins and learn more about its amazing history , before the tour picks up again, this time towards the City of Inverness, the capital of the Highlands.

The tour then takes us east towards Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre.

We will then head back towards Invergordon, returning at least 1 hour prior to your ship’s departure.

Invergordon Cruise Terminal

Table of Contents

Entering the Cromarty Firth

Your cruise ship will approach the Invergordon cruise terminal from the North Sea. As your ship turns into the Cromarty Firth have a look for bottlenose dolphins. They are often spotted in this area. These bottlenose dolphins live in the area all year round. They are the largest bottlenose dolphins in the UK. That is because the water is so cold they need extra fat to cope with the temperature.

Boat trips go out every day from Cromarty to see the dolphins. This might even be an optional trip available through your cruise line!

Your ship will then pass through the entrance to the Cromarty Firth. This is a deep water channel about 1/2 mile wide. The channel is between two sandstone headlands, known as the Sutors.

Look on the seaward side of those sandstone hills and you should see the remains of some concrete structures. Some of these defenses date from 1914 and some from WW2.

Nigg and Cromarty

As you move into the Cromarty Firth you will see the small town of Cromarty on the port side of your ship. In the summer months, there is a small ferry that runs between Cromarty and Nigg.

Nigg is the area you can see on the starboard side of the ship. The most noticeable thing is Nigg Energy Park. This was previously an oil rig service yard which was brought back into use a few years ago. Now it carries out work on ships and is also a base for renewable energy projects.

You will probably see some large metal structures which are parts for offshore and onshore wind turbine projects.

The Black Isle

As you cruise further into the Cromarty Firth you will pass the Black Isle. This is the area of land on the port side of the ship. It is not an island but rather a headland with Cromarty being at the head. The Black Isle has very good soil for farming. Lots of grain is grown there. If you want to try a local beer then try something from the Black Isle Brewery.

Oil Rigs in the Cromarty Firth

As you sail into the Firth you will also notice some oil rigs. Most of these are just being stored while not being used in the North Sea oil fields that are relatively close by. Many of these rigs are ‘cold stacked’. That means the staff have been reduced, or there might be no staff. It means the rig is unlikely to go back into service anytime soon and it will likely need work to put the rig back into service.

Some of the oil rigs are ‘hot stacked’. This means they have crew on them. Whilst they are not drilling in the Firth they are ready to go back out the oil fields quickly if they need to.

Approaching Invergordon

Where do cruise ships dock in invergordon.

The majority of cruise ships dock at the Invergordon Cruise Port, located within the Port of Cromarty Firth complex. Some ships may dock at Saltburn Pier. This is a 1-mile long wooden pier just on the edge of Invergordon.

Most cruise ships moor at the service base. This is a large industrial area that is operated by the Port of Cromarty Firth. There are many businesses operating within the base that is connected with the oil and gas industry and also the renewable energy industry, especially wind turbines.

Cruising to the service base you will pass a long wooden pier. This is a mile long. It’s called Salturn Pier. Sometimes smaller ships will be moored here.

You will then pass Admiralty Pier. This was built in 1914 for the Admiralty when Invergordon was a naval base. Previously cruise ships did call at this pier.

Your ship will moor alongside the dock at the Invergordon cruise terminal.

Hints and Tips for Cruise Ship Guests

  • If you are taking a cruise ship organised excursion you will need to board a coach in the coach park. This area is quite exposed to the weather and often windy.
  • There is no seating in the coach park area.
  • Due to limited parking spaces coaches don’t arrive until around 30 minutes before the excursion departs (sometimes less)
  • Coaches are not allowed to run their engines for long periods when they are parked. This means on hot days coaches can get extremely warm.
  • Not all the coaches have air conditioning so a small fan might be a good idea.
  • There are no toilets in this area of the cruise terminal. The nearest toilets are at the other end of the dock, you will have to walk back past the gangway to find them.
  • Cruise ship guests are not allowed to exit the port complex from the coach park area. To exit the port you need to walk back past the ship and follow the green pathway toward the town.
  • If you are meeting a local tour operator (not a cruise ship-organised excursion) you will have to go out of the port complex to meet them. They will give you instructions on the meeting point but allow a little extra time to get there.
