Review #22 Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Voyage 20
Updated: Feb 18, 2021
Distillery : Sourced
Mashbill : Undisclosed
BACKGROUND : Inspired by the original Jefferson's Ocean, which was new-filled bourbon barrels, the Jefferson's Ocean: Aged at Sea takes older bourbon barrels and brings it around the world stopping in 5 different continents and crossing the equator 4 times. Jefferson's ocean-aged bourbon is released in small batches that can range from wheated to ryed to cask strength. Voyage 20 is a blend of rye based straight bourbon whiskey.
NOSE : Rich scents of molasses, maple, caramel, and oak waft up from the glass. There were hints of rye spice here and there as well. (21/25)
PALATE : Jefferson's Ocean bourbon was incredibly smooth and balanced. As soon as the whiskey touched out mouth you're greeted by sweet vanilla, baking spices, oak, honey, and toffee. The whiskey was incredibly smooth, balanced and easy to drink. (35/40)
FINISH : The finish on Jefferson's Ocean is very oily, balanced, and long. There are strong flavors of oak, tannins, leather, cracked pepper, and rye spice. (22/25)
VALUE : Jefferson's Ocean carries a higher SRP of $70. In our opinion that’s quite high. I would say this bottle should sit around $50-55 (7/10)
Overall : 85/100
FINAL THOUGHTS : This is an incredibly smooth and enjoyable whiskey. I would recommend this to everyone as it has great flavor, is readily available, and not absurdly expensive! Jefferson's Ocean is an excellent whiskey to keep as a special occasions whiskey without feeling guilty for how much you spent.

Jefferson's Ocean Aged at Sea Blend of Straight Bourbons (Voyage 28), 45%
Price: 85 ● Issue: Spring 2024 ● Reviewer: David Fleming ● Category: Bourbon/Tennessee Whiskey
This Jefferson’s ship-aged bourbon sailed around the world, setting off from Savannah and making ports of call in Panama, New Zealand, Australia, Shanghai, Japan, the North Pacific, Baltimore, Europe, and back to Savannah. The nose offers vanilla, coconut, and balanced musty oak. Orange fruit flavors lead on a palate of cooked fruits, with accents of coconut, honey, cinnamon, raisin cake, and oak, followed by a pleasantly long and spicy finish.
Jefferson's Bourbon Ocean Voyage 24 Review
A Caribbean cruise delivers complex results
Jefferson's is known for aging its bourbon at sea, and with this release, the brand takes that practice to new, experimental levels. Ocean Voyage 24's maritime voyage saw the whiskey age exclusively in Caribbean climates, experiencing average temperatures of more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Those extreme conditions have pushed the whiskey's profile to a place of rich caramel and ripe, juicy berries, with no lack of complexity. The spirit's spicy finish helps deliver much more flavor than bourbon at this proof.

Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage #3 Review
Jefferson's Ocean Voyage 3
A solid bourbon with a better story, this is a unique whiskey. It's definitely worth a look for the story alone. The flavors are good, but not remarkable, given the price.
- Produced by: Jefferson’s (NDP)
- Distiller: Unknown
- Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon
- ABV: 45% (90 Proof)
- Selected by: Liquor Barn, Barrel #4
- Price Paid: $69.99
What it is:
What happens when you put an already-aged barrel of bourbon on a ship, and send it around the world? Does the sea air, the extreme latitude and temperature changes, and constant sloshing of the bourbon inside the barrel make a discernible or positive difference in the final product? That’s the question Jefferson’s attempts to answer with their “Ocean” Series. They take Jefferson’s bourbon and put it on a ship. That ship sails around the world to 5 continents, crossing the equator multiple times, and eventually the bourbon finds its way back home to be bottled under the “Ocean” moniker. This bottle was from the 4th barrel selected by Liquor Barn, a big-box liquor retailer in Central Kentucky. It is 90 proof.
Is this a legitimate aging technique or a gimmick?
That’s what we’re attempting to answer with our review.
I’ve tasted the two previous editions, or “voyages,” of Jefferson’s Ocean before. Voyage 1 was very nice, and voyage 2 was a bit bland and generic. How does voyage 3 stack up? Read on.
This was a blind review.
This is available in the standard Jefferson’s bottle, which is a nice handy size. Think of it as a rounded-corners version of a Knob Creek or Woodford Reserve bottle. The screen printed label is well done, and the voyage/selection-specific information is located on a sticker on the lower left front. Very attractive.
Appearance:
Medium amber, bordering on russet, this looks like a fairly well-aged spirit. I would guess it to be in the 7-9 year range based on color.
I often see people say they detect saltiness in this bourbon. I call BS on that one. That’s the result of knowing what they’re tasting before they taste it. Their brains are playing tricks on them. There isn’t a hint of salt or brine in this at all. It’s a sweet and woody on the nose with a ton of caramel and butterscotch.
The initial taste is full of dark fruit notes: plums, raisins, black cherries. That fades quickly into a spicy clove and vanilla experience with plenty of butterscotch and vanilla on the mid palate. Plenty of oak and tannins on the back of the tongue make this seem like a well-aged spirit.
Medium-long in duration, the clove and cinnamon experience wins out with a healthy dose of spicy oak on the end.
Not exactly a flavor “bomb” as the nose indicated, it’s still a very pleasant sip with all the right bourbon flavors and a bit of dark fruit to boot. I am not sure what I was expecting, but when the label was revealed and I found out I was drinking Jefferson’s Ocean, I was a little taken aback. This seems like a fairly well crafted traditional bourbon to me, and I suppose I would have expected something with more a barrel-finished sort of profile. Nevertheless, it’s a good bourbon.
So the final verdict: Is it a gimmick? Sort of. The ocean experience doesn’t impart any unique flavors to this. There isn’t a saltwater taste or a “sea air” nose to it. It is, however, a nicely crafted whiskey. There can’t be any doubt that the time spent aging it at sea contributed to that final profile, so it can’t be called a failure by any means. The real question on this comes down to whether you’re buying it for its unique story, or as a regular sipper. At $69.99 to $84.99, as I’ve seen in stores, it’s going to be a tough sell as a sipper. But if you like to talk about the bourbons you’re sharing with guests, this is one of the better stories out there with a flavor profile that doesn’t disappoint.

Since my first taste in 2014, I’ve been a fan of this series, but I haven’t re-visited it for a review till now with the Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 24. And while it may have been about 8 years since I sat down for a formal review, I haven’t been a stranger.
At whiskey festivals, events, brand tastings and private tasting, bottles of Jefferson’s Ocean show up and while I haven’t loved each one I’ve had, I haven’t hated any of them either. They’re all at the very least enjoyable. Let’s hope this one keeps that trend.

NOSE Oaky, caramel, leathery dried fruit, Banana’s Foster, vanilla, baking spice and a touch biscuity.
Good side of standard bourbon, nothing revolutionary on this one, but nice.
PALATE Oaky, caramel, baking spice, Banana’s Foster, vanilla, baking spice, biscuity, roasted nuts.
Good side of standard bourbon, nice, but nothing great.
FINISH Medium -> Banana, oak, caramel and nutty.
BALANCE, BODY and FEEL Decent, medium, soft and warm.
Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 24 – Overall Thoughts and Score
Like most of the Jefferson’s Ocean releases, this batch is decent. I do like my earlier batch a bit more, but there is nothing to dislike in this batch. It’s a soft, easy sipper with an interestingly heavy banana note. It gets more oaky and spiced as it opens, but never becomes a heavily oaked or spiced bourbon. It stays soft and a bit fruity.
On the whole, this Jefferson’s Ocean Voyage 24 comes through as a slightly above average bourbon. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s tasty, worth at least a drink and great to mix with, but there isn’t a ton of depth to it so it ends up being on the lighter side overall.
SCORE: 3/5 (above average, worth checking out ~ B- | 80-82)

Poor Voyage 24 Route
Unfortunately you decided to review voyage 24. I found this voyage lacking and your rating is correct. After having a less than excellent experience with this voyage 24 Jeffersons Ocean, I wondered what was different. Well, looking at the voyage path and notes. It stayed in the Carribean and in Port an awful lot. It did not travel north into the cold waters and air of the Pacifuc and Atlantic and also the warm waters of both Oceans. Sad. No wonder another reviewer said they saw the price downed to half its normal $75-80 per fifth.
Hi Josh, I was doing some last minute Thanksgiving shopping at Costco and saw this marked down to 39.97. Based on your review I picked up a few for gifts and of course drinking. I found a drop of water is how I liked this best. I tasted butterscotch along with some spice on the finish. Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving Josh!
That’ll make a great gift and a nice Thanksgiving drink. Cheers Mark, and hope you have a great Thanksgiving as well!

Jefferson's Ocean Voyage 24 Review
Jefferson’s OCEAN Aged at Sea ® Voyage 30
Voyage 30 captain’s log.
The adventure of Jefferson’s OCEAN Aged at Sea® Voyage 30 Cask Strength Bourbon kicked off at the bustling Port of Savannah, where Kymera’s barrel boarded a ship destined for a one-of-a-kind aging journey. Amidst ideal storage temperatures ranging from a comfortable 68°F to a balmy 80.6°F, the barrel was loaded and secured as the vessel set sail, charting a global course through the world’s oceans.
As the ship cut through the waves, the mercury soared as they headed south, reaching a sweltering 95°F at the port of Manzanillo, Panama. That heat was the secret sauce for the beginning of your bourbon’s transformation. Through the constant motion of the water, the barrels expanded and contracted like synchronized dancers, coaxing the whiskey in and out of the wood at warp speed – basically turbo mode for maturation!
But it wasn’t all tropical heatwaves that created the depth and complexity you find in your glass. Things cooled down dramatically as OCEAN Voyage 30 crossed the International Date Line, hitting temperatures better suited for a cozy sweater while cruising the waters around the ports of New Zealand and Australia. This weather rollercoaster was the ultimate hyper-aging mechanism, maturing the bourbon as no rickhouse could.
Heading north into the North Australian Basin, temperatures ramped up again, hitting the mid-80s. And that wasn’t even the end of the ride. In the North Pacific Basin, the air temps took a nosedive back to the 40’s, only to soar into the 80’s once again just south of Long Beach, California.
Finally sailing back through the Panama Canal, the ship made its triumphant return to Savannah, having truly been aged at the mercy of the sea. This whirlwind maturation tour was far from a leisurely cruise. Three complete heat cycles later, this bourbon had given up significant angels’ share and emerged from the sea, destined for your glass. Now that’s what we call a well-traveled spirit!
Kymera deeply values our community of partners, customers, suppliers and employees across the globe united in our goal of shaping the future. As a token of our appreciation, we invite you to experience the voyage – savoring the complexity of the flavor, respecting the global journey and marveling at the creativity of innovation.
Kymera’s Sipping Tips:
As our barrel of Jefferson’s OCEAN Aged at Sea® Voyage 30 Bourbon was bottled at Cask Strength, we wanted to provide some tips on how best to enjoy this level of spirit.
- Cask-strength bourbon is a type of whiskey that is bottled directly from the barrel without dilution or blending with water. This means the bourbon is presented to your pallet at its natural, undiluted alcohol content as when it matured in the cask.
- Cask-strength bourbons have a higher alcohol content and a more robust and intense flavor profile. The full concentration of flavors, including the influence of the aging process and the characteristics of the barrel, is preserved. The result is a bolder, more complex bourbon retaining the purity and heat, while providing a better representation of Jefferson’s offering.
- While cask-strength bourbon is bottled without dilution, it is common for enthusiasts to add a small amount of water to their glass when tasting. This can help unlock and enhance different flavors while slightly reducing the intensity of the alcohol. We recommend adding a couple drops of water or letting your glass rest with an ice cube prior to drinking.
- Please sip responsibly.
“ Dear valued customers and friends, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for your unwavering support and business with Kymera International. This is Jefferson’s third ocean-aged bourbon release. Rumors suggest there were 200 barrels total finished at sea, but this has not been confirmed. The bottleneck reads “Voyage No. 3” as compared with “Batch No. 15, Bottle No. 1917” on my bottle of Ocean II. We confirmed with Jefferson’s that this is the third release in the Ocean Aged At Sea series. Be sure to check out: Ocean 2 Review , Ocean 4 Review and Q&A with Trey Zoeller .
A strong dose of raisins and citrus hits with a great deal more intensity than you’d expect for 90 proof.
Raisins come through immediately and dominate the whole sip, making it very sweet throughout. Spice and alcohol come into play as well, ramping up quickly once the bourbon enters your mouth and pushing into the finish. Like the intensity on the nose, there’s more flavor and spice intensity than you’d expect for the proof.
Along with the spice the raisins continue to pull through. That citrus detected on the nose also makes itself present again. The intense spice drops off quickly leaving a faint but sweet, fruity aftertaste that continues to linger for a while.
Being the third ocean voyage from Jefferson’s with a rumored 200 barrels, I would estimate around 54,000 total bottles for this release. The bottle design has changed slightly from the second release and I’ll let you study our photos on this page and our Ocean II review page to find the nuances between them for yourself rather than try to explain them here. What this suggests is that Jefferson’s is making this an ongoing endeavor, so we might expect to see some consistency in flavor profile at some point. For the time being, the flavor profile of this third release is very different from the previous one. Unfortunately, the intense contrast of bitter and sweet along with an incredibly rich mouthfeel found in Ocean II are completely lost on this third release. Jefferson’s delivers a more balanced and mainstream flavor profile with Ocean III, but sacrifices the characteristics I found to be the most appealing and unique with Ocean II. Knowing the time at sea for Ocean II was somewhere between 5-10 months (some rumors suggest 7-8 as a tighter range), and the fact that both II and III were released in 2014 suggests that their sea voyages were different times of the year and could have resulted in very different aging conditions while at sea. Alternatively, this is sourced bourbon and we have no clue where its from, so it could even be a completely different mash bill than Ocean II. For me, this release lacks the unique flavor characteristics that would suggest an impact on flavor profile due to ocean aging. Not only that, the idea of aging at sea as something exciting is starting to wear off as Jefferson’s has released zero info on this particular voyage so far from what I could find.
$85, mash bill unknown, source unknown, age unknown, time at sea unknown, additional background unknown, decent overall bourbon. Except for the last item those are the facts. I argued adamantly in my Ocean II review that the concept of ocean aging is not a gimmick, which was based solely on my personal opinion of the flavor profile presented by Ocean II. The Ocean II has flavor characteristics I have never identified in another bourbon and I downright love the complexity of the sip. With this release, I’m not so sure. It’s a very good bourbon that maintains more balance and delivers a much sweeter sip than the last release. It’s good, but not $85 good. I’d peg this at around $40 considering the lack of background shared with the public and the quality of other bourbons I can buy in the $40 range.
A good bourbon overall… just completely different from Ocean II in a “Not quite as exciting” kind of way.
With Ocean II, I was expecting to be disappointed but instead I was wowed. With this release, I was expecting to be wowed but instead I was disappointed. It’s possible that every ongoing Ocean release will have a different flavor profile and that Jefferson’s is sourcing totally different bourbon for each voyage. We just don’t know. These ocean aged bourbons have received much fanfare and continue to be controversial within the bourbon community, possibly to a greater extreme than any other bourbon out there. While this release is good overall, it left me feeling a little upset at spending $85 on a bottle. I’ll probably continue to get excited about these releases, but that’s contingent on Jefferson’s giving us some more background. If not, my excitement will probably wear off. Honesty is the best policy and, if you’re listening Trey, I think the community would really appreciate some of the finer details behind these ocean aged releases. I know I would.
