Journey of My Heart: Filming Locations and Cast Details

of Journey of My Heart: Filming Locations and Cast Details

Director Lucie Guest’s ‘Journey of My Heart’ is a romantic movie that follows Abby, a hardworking wildlife biologist whose commitment to her work hinders her personal life. Her research on the mating habits of eagles sends her to Alaska, where she meets a Native American family who provides her with inspirational guidance. Abby also meets with a brawny wilderness guide named Eric.

Abby gradually gets inspired by his work and becomes attracted to Eric. Will sparks fly between the two, or would Abby go back to her regular routine? The movie is set in the Alaskan wilderness and features beautiful and serene visuals of the lake, the remote yet cozy lodge, and the woods. In case you’re wondering whether the movie was filmed on location in the Last Frontier, we have got you covered!

Journey of My Heart Filming Locations

Although Journey of My Heart’ is set in Alaska, it is not the filming site of the romantic comedy. Interestingly, the production team moved to the Great White North to create the breathtaking backdrop of Abby and Eric’s love story. Let’s take a look at the exact filming locations!

Vancouver, British Columbia

Originally titled ‘Love on the Wings of Eagles,’ the film was shot in Vancouver. Located in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, the seaport city is a favorable filming destination owing to the generous tax credits, availability of expert technical crews and talented actors, spectacular natural backdrops, favorable climate, and first-rate production facilities. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that it has served as the shooting site of numerous films and TV shows, including many Hallmark productions.

Thanking the cast and crew members for their contribution to the film, Guest wrote, “An incredible shoot, amazing team, love this crew, talented cast, dreamy locations. Thankful for the opportunity to direct this gem.” Other cast members like Darien Martin took to humor and posted how he didn’t realize it would be difficult swimming in full clothes and boots.

Furthermore, Martin expressed how thankful and lucky he felt for getting this as his first leading role. However, he was not the only one feeling elated. His co-star Paul Grenier shared he learned about eagle feathers and that he was grateful for working in the film. A picturesque place and some happy people, now that’s a perfect day at work.

‘Journey of My Heart’ on Hallmark Channel: Cast, Plot, & More

  • September 2, 2021 9:03 pm September 2, 2021 9:03 pm

HALLMARK CHANNEL

With the last week of summer upon us, Hallmark Channel is rolling out its final “Summer Nights” movie. Premiering the first weekend of September, Journey of My Heart follows a biologist in remote Alaska where she meets a rugged wildlife guide. We’ve got details on the film below, including who’s in the cast, what it’s about, filming location, social media mentions, and more.

Journey of My Heart : Plot + Cast

HALLMARK CHANNEL

Journey of My Heart is a story about two strangers who come together in the Alaskan wilderness. Abby (Rhiannon Fish) is a wildlife biologist who’s dedicated all her time to her work, so much so that it’s interfered with her personal life. Her latest project on eagles sends her to Alaska where she meets a whole slew of people: resort owners Niko (Paul C. Grenier) and Ellen (Grace Dove) Rivers, tribal elder Jaco (Ray Thunderchild), as well as a handsome guide named Eric (Darien Martin). As she becomes more inspired by her work, she and Eric grow closer. But, can Abby make a commitment to him, or will she fall back on her old ways?

Rhiannon Fish is a Canadian-Australian actress best known for her roles in Neighbours , Home and Away , and The 100 . In 2021, she starred in 2 other Hallmark movies, Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: How to Con a Con and The 27 Hour Day . Rhiannon is currently in a relationship with former The 100 co-star Richard Harmon.

Darien Martin is a Canadian actor who coincidentally also guested on a couple episodes of The 100 . But, he’s perhaps better known for his role on DC ‘s Legends of Tomorrow . He did a lot of film work in 2021, including V.C. Andrews’ Pearl in the Mist and Flora & Ulysses . There are two more movies in post-production: Love in Yellowstone and For the Love of Chocolate . Hallmark fans will know him from 2020’s Chateau Christmas .

Paul C. Grenier is known from AMC’s drama The Killing ; fans will know Grace Dove from acclaimed film The Revenant , and Ray Thunderchild from Canadian series Blackstone .

Any other details?

HALLMARK CHANNEL

Filming – as with a lot of Hallmark movies – took place in Canada. For this film specifically, they filmed in Vancouver, on land belonging to Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations. The setting being on native land gives credibility to the “Eagles Crest” location mentioned in the movie. According to director Lucie Guest , the film’s working title was Love on Wings of Eagles .

Ahead of the premiere, Hallmark Channel released a trailer for Journey of My Heart , which you can see below.

One of the leads, Darien Martin, posted a few behind the scenes shots and film stills from his time on set. A couple of the posts feature his co-star Rhiannon Fish, while the others showcase the gorgeous scenery.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Darien (@thedarienmartin)
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Darien (@thedarienmartin) (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Alongside another still shot , he wrote: “Feeling immensely blessed to have this opportunity for my first leading role✨ Thank you so so sooo much @lucieguest & @rhiannonmfish 🙏🏽 I’m just thankful for everyone around me on this journey 🥲☺️ its been an awesome experience!”

While Rhiannon has yet to post anything from set, she left comments on her co-star’s posts. Ray Thunderchild captioned a group shot with “Lots of great talent I’m standing with” and she commented “ It was such a pleasure to work with you ❤️❤️❤️ ”

Loss is a common experience that can be encountered many times during a lifetime; it does not discriminate for age, race, sex, education, economic status, religion, or nationality. Unrecognized, unprocessed, and untreated acute depression or the grief response following a significant loss can result in personal anguish, multiple somatic complaints, functional impairment, strained relationships, clinical depression, and a risk of suicide. [ 1 ] The losses referred to on this site can be acute or long- standing and can result in feelings of grief, stress, depression, loneliness or helplessness.

This website is designed to be a place for resources and support to help those in the grief process following a loss or a significant life change. This website contains a variety of different Grief AIDEs including information, techniques for coping, resources, and links to other websites. More than just a bandaid that covers and protects a wound as it heals, griefaides help in the healing process. Grief AIDEs help people understand and work through the grief process to get through the shock, the loss and the grief reaction and ultimately emerge transformed. They are also provided to serve as online aides in times of life crisis or life savers on the Internet, helping visitors keep afloat until help arrives or they are able to paddle into shore.

Each of person travels on his or her own unique journey in experiencing of the loss. Each person's experience of loss will have subtle nuances that will make it unlike any other loss, but the commonality--the grief response--with the intense feelings of loss, anger, depression, loneliness, fear, frustration, desperation, these are emotions that others will have also felt, endured and survived. What we have in common is that the grief response is felt most intensely by the heart. There is a common "language" those who have experienced grief speak, one that can often be understood without words. Many times all that is required to let someome know you have been there, that you understand their grief is just a understanding look, a gentle touch on the arm, a reassuring hug or a heart-felt note.

It is in the sharing of the losses of many hearts that our own heart begins to heal. This site is here to remind visitors that we are not alone in our losses or our feelings of grief, that someone else will have experienced similar losses (or worse) and survived. As the grieving person recognizes that others have lived through loss and survived he or she will begin to realize that he/she can survive their own loss.

Sharing the losses, telling the grief story or expressing the feeling in writing or other creative endeavors, no matter how painful, is important in the healing process. Healing will be recognized when the grieving person is at a point of being able to share with those earlier in the process. With this knowledge the heart grows stronger, more sensitive and more understanding of the suffering of others. The quotation by Dr. Robert Schuller sums this up:

May this site be a haven of hope and a place of peace for the grieving Internet community.

Join us on the Journey as often as needed, in bad times and also in good.

In her lifetime, she has survived abandonment, kidnapping, sexual abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, divorce, and the death of a child. “Beattie understands being overboard, which helps her throw bestselling lifelines to those still adrift,” said Time Magazine.

Melody was born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1948. Her father left home when she was a toddler, and she was raised by her mother. She was abducted by a stranger at age four. Although she was rescued the same day, the incident set the tone for a childhood of abuse, and she was sexually abused by a neighbor throughout her youth. Her mother turned a blind eye, just as she had denied the occurrence of abuse in her own past.

“My mother was a classic codependent,” Melody recalls. “If she had a migraine, she wouldn’t take an aspirin because she didn’t do drugs. She believed in suffering.” Unlike her mother, Melody was determined to self-medicate her emotional pain. Beattie began drinking at age 12, was a full-blown alcoholic by age 13, and a junkie by 18, even as she graduated from high school with honors. She ran with a crowd called “The Minnesota Mafia” who robbed pharmacies to get drugs. After several arrests, a judge mandated that she had to “go to treatment for as long as it takes or go to jail.”

Melody continued to score drugs in treatment until a spiritual epiphany transformed her. “I was on the lawn smoking dope when the world turned this purplish color. Everything looked connected—like a Monet painting. It wasn’t a hallucination; it was what the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous calls ‘a spiritual awakening.’ Until then, I’d felt entitled to use drugs. I finally realized that if I put half as much energy into doing the right thing as I had into doing wrong, I could do anything,” Beattie said.

After eight months of treatment, Melody left the hospital clean and sober, ready to take on new goals: helping others get sober, and getting married and having a family of her own. She married a former alcoholic who was also a prominent and respected counselor and had two children with him. Although she had stopped drinking and using drugs, she found herself sinking in despair. She discovered that her husband wasn’t sober; he’d been drinking and lying about it since before their marriage.

During her work with the spouses of addicts at a treatment center, she realized the problems that had led to her alcoholism were still there. Her pain wasn’t about her husband or his drinking; it was about her. There wasn’t a word for codependency yet. While Melody didn’t coin the term codependency, she became passionate about the subject. What was this thing we were doing to ourselves?

Driven into the ground financially by her husband’s alcoholism, Melody turned a life-long passion for writing into a career in journalism, writing about the issues that had consumed her for years. Her 24-year writing career has produced fifteen books published in twenty languages and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles. She has been a frequent guest on many national television shows, including Oprah. She and her books continue to be featured regularly in national publications including Time, People, and most major periodicals around the world.

Although it almost destroyed her when her twelve-year-old son Shane died in a ski accident in 1991, eventually Melody picked up the pieces of her life again. “I wanted to die, but I kept waking up alive,” she says. She began skydiving, mountain-climbing, and teaching others what she’d learned about grief.

An Indigenous Archaeologist’s Journey to Find the Lost Children

How “heart-centered” archaeology is helping to find the Indigenous children who never came home from residential schools

A late summer prairie wind swung my beaded earrings as I looked down at a gray-and-black pattern on a computer screen. The grass beneath my feet quieted as I paused. A disruption appeared, changing the radar image on the screen. My breath caught. “There,” I thought, anticipating what might come to light when we took the data back to the lab. My feet grew heavier, as did the ache in my heart.

I will never get used to walking over the land that may hold the unmarked graves of Indigenous children.

I did not start my journey as an Indigenous archaeologist in Canada with the intention of working with the dead. But I now find myself using my technical knowledge and research abilities to help my relatives find the unmarked graves of our children. Beginning in the late 1800s and over the course of more than century, Canadian authorities forcibly removed more than 150,000 Indigenous children from their families and placed them in residential schools . Thousands never came home. In recent years, many First Nations have begun the sacred and difficult work of trying to find the children who are lost, and they are calling on archaeologists for help.

Along the way, people have gained a better understanding of how complicated it can be to find the answers that families of missing children deserve. But even when radar surveys locate anomalies in the soil that may indicate an unmarked grave, a lot of uncertainty remains. Present-day archaeologists are collaborating with survivors and communities to bring together all the information they can to locate the children and bring them home.

These efforts are an example of how archaeology is transforming to become more engaged, more ethical and more caring about the people whose past we are privileged to study. Historically, archaeologists have collected Indigenous belongings (calling them “artifacts”) and ancestors (“human remains”) without the consent of descendant peoples and used these to formulate theories about their past lives. In contrast to this top-down approach, archaeology is now being used to support restorative justice for communities who have been historically and systemically oppressed.

This new archaeological practice, which I describe as “heart-centered,” brings my colleagues and me back in time to the places touched by our ancestors. We use the material pieces they left behind to try to reanimate their lives, revive their stories—and, by informing their descendants of what became of their loved ones, to help bring closure and heal trauma . Though the journey is long, archaeological methods can be used to tell the stories of the past, both of ancient Indigenous lives and the impacts of colonization, to help build a brighter future.

The nation known as Canada and the colonies that preceded it created policies and practices designed to eliminate the ways of life of Indigenous peoples. Central to this effort were government-funded, church-run residential schools. Established in the 1880s, these institutions incarceratedIndigenous children—separating them from their families and forcing them to attend, indoctrinating them into Christianity and punishing them for speaking their own languages or engaging in their own cultural practices. “I want to get rid of the Indian problem,” said Duncan Campbell Scott of the Department of Indian Affairs in 1920 upon mandating school attendance for Indigenous children. “Our objective is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question.”

The residential school system tore families apart and placed children in environments of physical, psychological, cultural and often sexual abuse. Thousands of them died at schools from neglect, substandard living conditions, diseases, malnutrition and abuse. Some were buried in cemeteries or graveyards at the schools, while others were disposed of in more clandestine ways. Parents were often not notified of their children’s death; their kids simply never came home.

Survivors of the schools shared their knowledge about their missing companions for decades, but neither the churches nor the federal government took significant action to find the remains. Too often, these testimonies were ignored or downplayed. Over time, physical markers that might have indicated the locations of the graves were erased through both neglect and deliberate actions. In the 1960s, for example, a Catholic priest removed the headstones from the cemetery of the Marieval Residential School at Cowessess, Saskatchewan. Other cemeteries were decommissioned and erased from the landscape. It took Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which published its first shattering reports in 2015, along with the announcement of the results of ground-penetrating radar surveys conducted by First Nations investigators in 2021, to bring the horror of residential schools into the international spotlight. The trauma inflicted by residential schools have affected Indigenous people across generations. My great-grandmother attended a residential school, and this sacred work is therefore part of my own journey of healing and coming home.

In 1953 my then 19-year-old grandmother gave birth to my father in a Catholic hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. She was part of the Métis Nation, an Indigenous identity that emerged out of early unions between European fur traders and Indigenous women. The descendants of these unions formed a community with a distinct way of life, culture, and language and are now one of three recognized Indigenous groups in Canada.

Young, unmarried and Indigenous, my grandmother was not given a chance to raise her firstborn son. After she left the hospital, she never saw him again. The baby was taken from her and deposited in an orphanage, where he spent the first two years of his life . Many of these orphanages operated like residential schools; in fact, some residential schools housed orphanages, such as the St. Albert Indian Residential School, also called Youville, in Alberta. Then came foster care—my father bounced from family to family before he finally landed in a more stable placement with a French-Canadian farming household. Never adopted, he spent two unfulfilling and alienating years as an undergraduate at the University of Alberta before leaving behind his Métis homeland.

In his early 20s, he met my mother, a woman of European (mostly British) descent, in British Columbia. I was born and raised away from my ancestral homeland of prairie fields and thunderstorms. My childhood was instead spent exploring the towering cedar trees and damp mosses of the temperate rain forest near the Pacific coast. I had an unusual upbringing, being homeschooled for much of my childhood. My interests were wide-ranging, but in my teenage years, my father introduced me to archaeology, and it sounded like the most exciting and adventurous life, traveling around and exploring ancient places. My path forward seemed clear.

Archaeology emerged as a discipline in Europe and was brought to North America as part of colonial institutions such as universities and museums. Early archaeologists, almost all of them nonindigenous, excavated Indigenous sites and took what they found to museums. They framed themselves as the rightful stewards of Indigenous pasts, using our creations and ancestors for their scientific studies without our involvement or consent.

In the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with codification of human and civil rights legislation, archaeologists began to call for a shift toward understanding individual experiences of diverse peoples from the past. Concurrently, many Indigenous activists were pushing for museums and universities to return ancestors to their communities, leading to the passing of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) in the U.S. in 1990. This act required institutions that received federal funding to inventory and return ancestors and burial objects wherever cultural affiliation could be proven. It caused consternation among many archaeologists and biological anthropologists, who voiced concern that their respective fields were in danger. They were so used to the idea that nonindigenous scholars had a right to study whatever they wanted about the past, even if living Indigenous people strongly disagreed, that returning the stolen ancestors seemed a significant threat to the foundations of their discipline.

As a teenage archaeology enthusiast in the mid-1990s, I had no idea about the changes occurring in the field, and yet they had a huge impact on my training. I was educated after NAGPRA and in British Columbia, where many archaeologists were working closely with Indigenous communities.

In 2001 I excitedly stepped off a boat—I remember the midsummer sun glinting off its metal hull—onto a rocky shore. I was an undergraduate at the University of British Columbia, and my classmates and I were on the territory of the Sq’ewá:lxw First Nation, along the lower Fraser River in British Columbia, to learn field archaeology. I glimpsed the rich red ocher spread across the insides of my wrists before instinctively brushing my fingers against my temples to check that I remembered to put the paste there. The ocher allowed us to be visible to the ancestors while digging at the archaeological site nearby; every person stepping off the boat that day had to follow this protocol.

Walking up the gentle slope to the excavation that awaited, I fell into conversation with our community partners from the Sq’ewá:lxw Nation. As they shared their knowledge and connections with the past, they were as much our teachers as the academics on site were. They helped me, an Indigenous student entering my last year of university, continue my own journey of reconnecting with my ancestors. The Sq’ewá:lxw elders planted seeds in my mind that led me to where I am today: using archaeology to help Indigenous communities find our children.

In mid-2021 Tk̓emlúpste Secwépemc Nation announced that about 200 probable graves had been detected near the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. While work to locate unmarked graves had been ongoing at other locations, this announcement brought unprecedented attention to the issue of unmarked graves. The community had worked with an anthropologist who used ground-penetrating radar to locate these potential grave sites.

Since that announcement, many archaeologists have been called on by Indigenous communities in Canada and the U.S. to help find the unmarked graves of their children. This collaboration represents a significant change: communities that have been the unwilling subjects of archaeological research in the past are now asking for assistance.

Supporting Indigenous communities in this painful task requires archaeologists to lead from the heart. It is emotional and highly sensitive work, requiring great care, sincerity and scientific rigor. Instead of an extractive practice that takes knowledge, belongings and ancestors away from Indigenous communities, this new archaeology can support redress and restorative justice.

In 2020 three colleagues and I published a book envisioning a heart-centered archaeological practice flowing through the four chambers of care, emotion, relation and rigor. We invited fellow archaeologists to care for the living and the dead, to recognize the emotional content of archaeology (such as the emotions inherent in the lives of ancient peoples and evoked by the materials they used), to accept that the past relates to the present (so it’s important to build ties with the living and respect their boundaries) and finally to acknowledge that rigor comes in many forms (all knowledge systems have internal rigor that determines what the nature of knowledge is, who has knowledge and how knowledge is passed on).

It is also in heart-centered archaeology that I can find a space to be both an archaeologist and an Indigenous person. It has taken me a lifetime, but I am finally here, practicing archaeology in my own way that respects my Métis relatives. My heart has brought me back home to my homelands. The relationship I have built with my community has brought me to the most meaningful and sacred work I could imagine: helping to find the missing children. I am learning the stories of my family, including my great-grandmother, the one who attended a residential school, and my grandmother’s first cousin, who died at the age of seven and was buried in a cemetery beside a residential school. I am learning the truths of our experience, working to heal so my young daughter can have a brighter future.

Two decades after my undergraduate work in 2001, I sat down with a survivor of a residential schoolin a building that was right next door to what was once such a school. A church spire from the mission that had run the institution was visible through the window. A crispness in the fall air carried the promise of a frigid prairie winter to come. I lit the sage leaves gathered in a small cast-iron pan, the flame from the wooden match creating a burst of heat. Tendrils of fragrant smoke enveloped me as I pulled the cleansing smudge, or smoke, toward my eyes, my ears, my mouth, my heart. I stood, my ribbon skirt constricting my movement, to offer the survivor the smudge, knowing the pain that would come with what the team was about to share.

Earlier that day, I had surveyed the field behind the school with ground-penetrating radar while my team analyzed the images that appeared on my computer screen. Back in the lab, the data had resolved into a few colorful oval shapes on a white background, each about three feet long, three feet deep and similarly oriented. These were most likely buried children. No trace of their graves remained visible on the grassy field behind the residential school building, whose shadowed windows hid many secrets still to be discovered.

I told the survivor what the team had found. They needed to step away; the grief and pain were overwhelming. I stepped away, too, because I heard my own heart echo their heartbreak. Each of these shapes represented a cherished child. Yet the search was only beginning. Thousands of graves had yet to be found—and we were coming to terms with the fact that we would never find them all.

How many times can you break a broken heart?

There is still a long journey ahead. Many sites surrounding the residential schools have not even begun to be searched. The landscapes of these institutions are vast, and the process of searching is slow. It will take years of work to locate possible graves, and Indigenous people continue to discuss the question of what happens once they are located. But maybe, after years and years of asking, there might be some accountability for those responsible for taking the children away—only if the government and churches support the work to come and the public keeps the pressure on for real action.

The journey for archaeology as a discipline is equally challenging. There are still people in our field who insist that collaboration with Indigenous communities and the return of ancestors are a threat to the very foundations of our discipline. But if a foundation is fundamentally flawed, do we just continue building the same way, or do we imagine a different foundation?

We can, and will, do better. And we will help find the children.

journey of heart

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”

'When Calls the Heart' Star Erin Krakow on Elizabeth's "Self-Discovery" in Season 11

In an exclusive interview, the Hallmark actress reveals what's next for her character.

preview for Meet the “When Calls the Heart” Cast

This story contains light spoilers for When Calls the Heart season 10.

The actress is famous for portraying Elizabeth Thatcher Thornton, and her character has embraced many trials and tribulations throughout her tenure on the drama. The schoolteacher has dealt with the loss of her husband Jack ( Daniel Lissing ), the birth of her son, finding love again with Lucas Bouchard ( Chris McNally ) and eventually ending the couple's engagement at the end of season 10.

For Erin, what made When Calls the Heart season 11 so important was the fact Elizabeth is not just looking out for those she cares about most. Elizabeth is on a journey to discover who she is amid the start of something new.

"Season 10 was a very challenging emotional time for Elizabeth," Erin tells Good Housekeeping over Zoom. "A lot of self-reflection, a lot of trying to figure out what's the right move and is she with the right person. Moving into season 11, it was important for me to explore the sides of Elizabeth that show her celebrating life a bit more and being open to those. There's a real lightness and joy that comes with that."

Indeed, Elizabeth takes focus on figuring out her own identity in When Calls the Heart season 11 , starting with asking Rosemary Coulter to help cut her hair in the premiere episode. But while switching up her looks is one element on her road to self-discovery, there's one other thing that fans have waited years to see happen.

As Erin explains, season 11 is unique for Elizabeth as she can finally acknowledge her feelings for Mountie Nathan Grant ( Kevin McGarry ), with whom she's had an on-and-off friendship since he first appeared in season 6. While Nathan has expressed his desire to be in a relationship with her, viewers know she eventually chose Lucas as her next beau, before she chose to end their relationship amid her own hesitation to choose between him and Nathan.

Now that she's finally single, Erin says Elizabeth is ready to take her relationship with Nathan to the next level. But unlike her previous romances, Erin says the twosome's road to love is much softer for a specific reason.

"When I think about the way [ When Calls the Heart is] handling it, it's grown up," she says. "For Nathan and Elizabeth, they're busy people. She's trying to raise her kid, she's a teacher. He's trying to raise his kid [Allie, played by Jaeda Lily Miller ], he's a Mountie. They've got lives and responsibilities. That's not necessarily a sexy way of approaching it, but that's life for them. It's a mature kind of love that ends up being very passionate, if I may say. Sometimes it's just nice to see a couple of grown people fall in love."

So, what else is Erin excited for fans to see in When Calls the Heart season 11 ? As the actress emphasizes, Elizabeth is expanding her horizons, but she's not the only one.

"There have been so many changes in the rollercoaster of Elizabeth's journey," Erin says. "Season 11 is no exception. We're breathing new life into Elizabeth and into the fabric of the town in various ways. And Nathan is there and there's all this excitement and change happening in Hope Valley. One of Fallout season 1's most heart-breaking finale scenes was reshot because 'it didn't feel right', star says

'There were a lot of tears and wailing, and it just didn’t feel right'

Lucy sits by a campfire as dusk sets in during Amazon's Fallout TV show

Major spoilers follow for Fallout season 1.

Fallout TV show star Ella Purnell has revealed that a hugely important scene involving her character Lucy MacLean was completely reworked because "it didn't feel right".

Speaking to GQ after the popular Prime Video show's first season was released, Purnell opened up the vital moment that redefines Lucy's sense of identity and shows how much she's evolved over the course of the series' first season .

I'm about to dive into full spoiler territory for Amazon 's live-action TV entry in Bethesda's beloved post-apocalyptic video game franchise, so turn back now if you haven't watched all eight episodes yet.

Lucy explores an abandoned, ruined home in Amazon's Fallout TV series

The scenario in question sees Lucy kill her mother Rose, who became a ghoul due to radiation poisoning, in the final 10 minutes of 'The Beginning', aka Fallout 's eighth episode. Rose was turned into one of Fallout 's mutated humans as a result of a nuclear warhead that was dropped on Shady Sands – an iconic location in the Fallout franchise – by Hank (Lucy's dad and Rose's husband), with the subsequent years of lethal radiation slowly turning her into said ghoul.

The reveal is one of many shocking moments in Fallout 's season 1 finale that, according to Purnell, forces her "to go through the five stages of grief in such a short amount of time". Indeed, part of that accelerated grieving process leads a rage-filled but still empathetic Lucy to shoot Rose in the head. It's a decision that not only puts Rose out of her misery, but also becomes another difficult experience that, as Purnell exclusively told TechRadar, means she's "forever changed" by her "violent" season 1 journey across the Wasteland . And yet, the heart-wrenching sequence that sees Lucy kill her own mother almost had a different feel to it.

"We reshot [the scene]," Purnell told GQ. "Originally, we [Purnell and Fallout 's writers] had a different idea of how that ending was going to go. We originally shot me killing my mum as a really emotional moment; there were a lot of tears and wailing. And it just didn’t feel right. We felt like, if she’s gonna get up and go into the wasteland, she needs to be a changed woman, and maybe her grief needs to give way to something harder.

"By killing her mom in a mercy kill, she’s doing exactly what the Ghoul did to Roger [in episode 4]. She’s learnt from him. She has turned into him. When she said “'I’ll never be you', maybe that’s not true. And, in that moment, when she shoots her mom, it means so many things. It means, ‘I’m coming with you.’ It means, ‘I’m gonna meet my makers.’ It means, ‘I f*****g hate you, but I have turned into you, you were right.’ It means she’s letting go of her golden center."

How will Lucy's season 1 journey impact her Fallout season 2 arc?

Wouldn't want to keep you on the edge of your seat, now, would we? See you back in the Wasteland for SEASON 2. pic.twitter.com/ULs6DEPHDW April 18, 2024

Lucy's mercy killing of Rose is certainly one of the more emotionally impactful moments in the series, which we hailed as "an ambitious, prestige-flavored adaptation that brings one of gaming’s most iconic series to life with a highly satisfying blend of source material devotion and narrative originality" in our Fallout season 1 review . Given the critical acclaim that Prime Video's TV adaptation has been met with since its April 10 release, it was unsurprising to see Amazon renew Fallout for a second season just seven days after its debut on one of the world's best streaming services .

As for what's been planned for next season, director/executive producer Jonathan Nolan exclusively told me that the show's chief creative team has "really cool" ideas for Fallout season 2 . It'll be sometime before we find out what those are, though, outside of what's been teased by Nolan and other prominent crew members in various post-season 1 interviews. For a round-up of the most interesting tidbits, check out our Fallout season 2 guide.

From endangered to empowered: The Topeka shiner’s journey

Minnow in a researcher's hand

In the heart of America's midwest, a quiet revolution in conservation is taking root. As the United States celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act, the prairies and waterways of America's heartland have been quietly weaving an uplifting tale of partnership, resilience and ecological triumph. Kraig McPeek, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Illinois-Iowa Field Supervisor, shared his optimism about the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act., "As we celebrate half a century of the Endangered Species Act, the story of the oxbow restoration and the Topeka shiner is a reminder of what we can accomplish together."

We at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are part of a remarkable partnership creating ripples of change throughout the midwest. This coalition of state agencies, agricultural associations, and passionate farmers has come together with one purpose: to restore and safeguard Iowa's precious oxbow habitats and, in doing so, protect the stability of oxbow ecosystems. Our Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program acts as the very glue binding the coalition together.

Oxbows, U-shaped remnants of river meanders, are vital for ecosystem health, acting as biodiversity hotspots and playing key roles in water filtration and flood control serving as important habitat. Central to these habitats is the endangered Topeka shiner, a small, native freshwater fish. Its presence or absence reflects the overall health of the ecosystem.

An oxbow is formed when a winding curve of a river becomes isolated due to erosion of river banks and the creation of a new river channel during high water flow. Sediment builds up in oxbows. Oxbows dry out. They disappear altogether when plants cover them. The degradation of these special places, as seen in places like West Buttrick Creek in Iowa’s Raccoon River watershed, not only diminishes water quality but also threatens the survival of the Topeka shiner and other aquatic species. Restoring oxbows is crucial not just for this species, but for maintaining the health of freshwater systems.

Two staff members show off a spotfin shiner found in a restored oxbow

With the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act in 2023, the revival story of the Topeka shiner highlights the critical role of partnerships, innovation, and the sustained dedication of local communities.

Left: An excavator digs to restore an oxbow. Right: The restored oxbow provides important wetland habitat.

Landowner partnership: The cornerstone of conservation

Kathy and Dave Law stand in front of the restored oxbow on their land

Without the commitment of landowners, the restoration of oxbow wetlands would remain a distant dream. Kathy Law and her husband, Dave Law, are Iowa farmers who participated in oxbow restoration on their land, stressed the significance of these partnerships, emphasizing, "Landowner involvement is paramount. Their commitment to preserving natural habitats has been the linchpin of this endeavor."

The narrative gets richer when we consider the multi-faceted benefits that farmers reap from oxbow restoration. For farmers, the benefits of participating in oxbow restoration extend beyond ecological preservation. Brandon Iddings of the Iowa Soybean Association noted, "Not only have these wetland restorations become a haven for endangered species, but they've also proved beneficial for crop yields."

In the heart of Iowa, where family farms dot the landscape and generations have tilled the same land, Kathy speaks with reverence about the soil underfoot. "Our land is not merely an income source," she begins, echoing the sentiments of countless Iowa farmers. "It's our heritage. For many, these lands have been passed down through generations. It's not just about profit, it's our lifestyle, our very way of life."

Kathy's commitment to the land is evident. But she also highlights a mutual relationship between conservation efforts and farming benefits. "When we participated in the oxbow restorations, the soil they removed was of such high quality that it was spread over one of our fields," she recalls. "This seemingly small act resulted in our corn yielding over 20 bushels more per acre. The only reason for this boost we can pinpoint is the improved quality of our soil from that deposited dirt."

For Kathy and many like her, conservation isn't just about protecting nature—it's about enhancing productivity and ensuring their land's legacy continues. "There are tangible economic benefits alongside the invaluable environmental advantages," Kathy emphasizes. "It's not just about doing the right thing for nature, but also ensuring our land remains prosperous for generations to come."

Joe emphasized the ease for farmers: "Through collaborations, farmers can participate in these restoration efforts without the burden of added costs."

What’s Next: Hope for the Topeka shiner

The restoration of oxbow habitats has been crucial for the Topeka shiner, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service playing a significant role in bringing all the characters of this story together. When asked about their experiences working with partners on Topeka shiner conservation, staff shared different perspectives along the same narrative – the future for this little fish depends on collaborative conservation much like a community coming together to save the Topeka shiner.

This sentiment is echoed by Kathy, who sees the increasing participation of landowners in oxbow restoration as a sign of growing grassroots conservation efforts. The success story of the Topeka shiner and oxbow restoration, showcasing community and organizational collaboration, offers hope and a model for future endeavors.

"Every plot of land rejuvenated, every oxbow restored, brings us closer to a future where our natural habitats thrive," Brandon of the Iowa Soybean Association concluded.

We encourage more landowners to join this cause, providing resources and support for tailored restoration projects.
