It’s the closest thing there is to a universal genre. That’s because, with rare exceptions, everyone falls in love, or at least wants to. And when you think about it, almost every movie is a love story. Thrillers, comedies, sci-fi — no matter what the form, the spectacle of two people falling in love in the middle of it has always been what makes the world of movies go round. That’s why choosing the greatest movie love stories presents a special challenge. Because really, what isn’t a contender? In a way, though, we kept our criteria simple. We were looking for grand passion, for chemistry and heat and all that good stuff. Yet there’s an ineffable quality that elevates a truly great movie romance. Let’s call it the Swoon Factor. It’s about the swoon that happens onscreen; it’s about the swoon that happens between the audience and the screen. What follows are the 50 films that, more than any others, got our hearts racing.     

Dirty Dancing (1987)

Set in 1963 but oh-so-’80s in its idea of hairstyles and heartthrobs, this sexy summer-camp romance defied its critics to become a classic. Nicknaming Jennifer Grey’s character “Baby” went a long way to illustrate what’s really going on here: The teenage daughter of conservative Jewish parents is forever being infantilized by her folks, until she meets a slightly older — but undeniably adult — dance teacher (Patrick Swayze) who shows her the time of her life. In the two decades since “The Notebook,” Ryan Gosling has cultivated his image as a chiseled heartthrob to such a degree that he seemed the perfect choice to play a live-action Ken doll in the “Barbie” movie. But back when director Nick Cassavetes was casting the role of Noah Calhoun, he saw the actor (and former Mouseketeer) differently — as someone both relatable and reckless enough to chase his dream girl (Rachel McAdams’ Allie) up a Ferris wheel. No matter what Allie does, he keeps on loving her in the best possible version Hollywood can make of a Nicholas Sparks novel. The secret formula here comes in catching up with Noah and Allie half a century later, as played by screen legends James Garner and Gena Rowlands, coupled with the tear-jerky reason we’ve been reliving all their most romantic memories. — PD

All That Heaven Allows (1955)

The colors gush in Douglas Sirk’s lush 1950s melodrama, about a New England widow, Cary (Jane Wyman), who falls for the studly but respectful hunk (Rock Hudson) who tends the trees at her house. It may be love, but her two grown children — and nearly the entire community — are disapproving of Cary’s feelings, pressuring her to break off the relationship. Seen today, neither the age difference nor the class divide seem like deal-breakers, which makes Cary’s sacrifice seem all the more futile. (Years later, Todd Haynes updated the dynamic with a Black gardener and a still-living gay husband in “Far from Heaven.”) During the 1950s, Hudson carved out a niche as a sensitive leading man, to the point that he’s almost pathetic here (consider the state of him in the final scene). You might ask: How romantic could a musical this notoriously G-rated and squeaky-clean really be? But if “The Sound of Music” has incandescent songs, as well as a singular true-life story about the Von Trapp Family Singers (seven motherless Austrian children returned to vitality through the life force of Julie Andrews’ nun-turned-governess Maria), the movie’s secret weapon is its love story. Andrews, while she’s certainly playing the soul of goodness, invests her slow-blooming affection for Christopher Plummer’s Capt. Von Trapp with an almost forbidden sense of broken decorum. And Plummer, who looks like he belongs in a far darker movie, plays the captain as a lost man literally coming back to existence. When these two dance and realize, at the very same moment, that they’ve fallen in love, it’s one of the most electrifying scenes in movie history. — OG

Once (2007)

It’s not unusual to see a musical scale the heights of romantic passion. What’s different about John Carney’s film is that it’s a small-scale, non-stylized, kitchen-sink indie drama, yet in its lo-fi and platonic way it uses songs to create the majesty and devotion of a musical daydream. On the sidewalks of Dublin, a 30ish busker (Glenn Hansard) strums a guitar with a worn-out hole where the pick board should be. Most folks pass him by, but a girl (Markéte Irglová) lingers. They’re drawn into each other’s orbit, and though we never learn their names, a romance — or is it? — begins to play out in the songs they sing together. They both have other relationships, yet ”Once” tells the delicate tale of how, through song, these two save each other. Some think of it as the ultimate guilty-pleasure rom-com. The director Todd Haynes has made several masterpieces (“Far From Heaven,” “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story”), but he has never made a drama more darkly romantic and enticing, more seductive in its suspense, more mired in the agonizing compulsion of love than this lavishly mesmerizing adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel “The Price of Salt.” During the Christmas shopping season, Therese (Rooney Mara), a New York department-store clerk, meets Carol, a woman of the world played by Cate Blanchett with a femme fatale swagger just this side of threatening. Their relationship will be fraught with the drama of divorce, blackmail, a private detective, and other elements that, as staged by Haynes, acquire the heightened quality of a vintage film noir. The final scene, set in the bar of the Oak Room, features one of the most transporting locked-gazes-across-a-crowded-room moments you’ll ever see. — OG

Is there anything more romantic than someone jumping in front of a bullet for you? Technically, that’s Frank Farmer’s job, but by the time Kevin Costner’s clean-cut, ex-Secret Service agent leaps in to protect endangered diva Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston) — on Oscar night, no less — we know he’s acting out of love more than duty. Frank sweeps both audiences and Rachel off their feet much earlier in the film, during a concert meltdown where he lifts her up and carries her through the mob — a chivalrous image immortalized on the film’s poster. She wants him to drown The Wife, and part of the film’s shock is that he nearly does. But “Sunrise” proceeds as a series of shocks, which have the effect of jolting love back to life. Shot as a kind of sensuous living daydream, it is the cinema’s most profound and stirring roller-coaster of passion, an affirmation of what it means for two people to be meant for each other. — OG

The Princess Bride (1987)

Presented as a beloved fairy tale passed down between generations, screenwriter William Goldman’s tongue-in-cheek riff on classic adventure tales takes the best parts of nearly a century of cinematic love stories and remixes them for the home-video set (the goal was to get through to media-savvy audiences who thought they’d seen it all). Starting with two impossibly beautiful leads in Cary Elwes and Robin Wright, he builds a legend of swashbuckling pirates, dangerous rescues and well-earned revenge, describing it all (via kindly narrator Peter Falk) as the ultimate example of the form. That’s an impossible tall order — a genre-straddling smorgasbord the studio didn’t know how to market at the time — which director Rob Reiner miraculously achieves by enlisting an astonishing ensemble. Everyone from Billy Crystal to Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn to Andre the Giant assemble to support the sacrifice Westley makes to save his beloved Buttercup from marrying the wrong guy. — PD

Past Lives (2023)

Two men and a woman sit at a bar, and before the audience knows anything about them, we try to figure out what their relationship is. Who belongs with whom? That we can’t entirely tell is key to what makes Celine Song’s remarkable drama such a haunting fable of love’s enigma. It turns out that Nora (Greta Lee), a New Yorker born and raised until the age of 12 in South Korea, is married to Arthur (John Magaro), a mouthy homegrown American she met at a writers’ retreat. The other man, Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), is the childhood friend Nora has maintained ties with; he’s at once her past, the spirit of her homeland, and maybe her romantic partner in another avenue of existence. “Past Lives” is a movie that will strike chords of recognition in any true romantic, as it’s about the secret journey that love takes: a communion that may occur in this life, or that may just be waiting for the next one. — OG

Beauty and the Beast (1946)

It’s one of the most poetic distillations of romantic desire in all of movies; you could also call it the “Splash” of its day. Jean Marais plays the Beast, who in Jean Cocteau’s film is a kind of delicate aristocrat with the face of a courtly lion. Josette Day is Belle, who ends up imprisoned in the Beast’s castle to work off a debt accrued by her father. What follows is an intricate fairy tale of deception and magic, built around the luminous ingenuity of Cocteau’s visual effects. Yet the most magical thing about it is the bond that develops between Belle and her disarmingly chivalrous captor/lover, a character so touching in his passion that when Greta Garbo saw the movie, it’s reported that she reacted to his death at the end by crying out, “Give me back my Beast!” — OG

Love & Basketball (2000)

The title of this Y2K sports classic references two very different games, and the rules aren’t fair in either one. After discovering that they both love basketball, Monica cockily challenges childhood friend Quincy to a match (later, famously, she’ll play for his heart). Monica wins that first bout, but he winds up injuring her — an early sign that the dynamic is different when two sexes occupy the court at the same time. That gap widens as they grow up (into Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan). He finds it relatively easy to follow in the footsteps of his NBA-pro dad, whereas there’s no equivalent path for female players. Writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood empathizes with Monica, who watches fame go to her old friend’s head. Per the formula, audiences are conditioned to root for the romance to work out, but basketball occupies a bigger part of Monica’s heart, and the movie finds the perfect solution. — PD

Call Me by Your Name (2017)

Italian director Luca Guadagnino (“I Am Love”) turned André Aciman’s ecstatic, wildly overwritten novel of a formative first love between teenage Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and his father’s slightly older — but still relatively inexperienced — teaching assistant, Oliver (Armie Hammer), into a sensual summer dream. There’s an intensity to the sights, sensations and emotions that imprints itself on audiences, such that Elio’s memories become our own. One needn’t be gay to recognize the significance that such an all-consuming early infatuation can leave on a young person’s romantic identity, though the movie offers a welcome message to all who’ve struggled to come to terms with their own sexuality in the eloquent heart-to-heart between the boy and his surprisingly understanding dad: “How you live your life is your business. Just remember, our hearts and our bodies are given to us only once,” he says. “Don’t kill it and with it the joy you’ve felt.” — PD

Vertigo (1958)

For a director who was known as the thrillingly precise and methodical Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock was not shy about portraying romantic rapture. A number of his films (“To Catch a Thief,” “Notorious,” “Rear Window”) are entrancing love stories, but in “Vertigo” he dove deep into an almost private zone of love-as-fetishistic-obsession. James Stewart’s middle-aged detective falls for the woman he’s hired to follow — played, with a depressive carnality, by Kim Novak, who also plays the woman’s shop-girl look-alike, who Stewart then feels compelled to transform into the first woman. No classic Hollywood movie balances love on the precipice of kink and danger the way this one does, which is why “Vertigo” opened the door to everything from “Blue Velvet” to the career of Brian De Palma. — OG

La La Land (2016)

Damien Chazelle’s glorious, heartrending, bittersweet musical does an extraordinary job of retro-fitting the song-and-dance pleasures of vintage Hollywood into the sunlit freeway landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Yet the film’s most radical feature is the way it brings Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, together with Seb (Ryan Gosling), a jazz pianist drowning in his own purity, and celebrates their union with intoxicating affection — only to show you how their love crashes on the shores of warring egos. What lifts “La La Land” into the realm of transcendently moving love stories is that it presents a happy ending that almost happened, and that could have happened if only life had turned out a bit different. — OG

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Dramatically speaking, the most exciting part of a relationship occurs either during the time a couple is falling in love or else at the moment it’s falling apart. Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman incorporates both aspects — albeit as endangered flashbacks — while exploring a fantasy that anyone who’s been through the emotional wringer of a relationship can identify with: What if you could erase all traces of an ex from your memory? Director Michel Gondry proved the perfect partner to visualize the sketchy sci-fi apparatus that makes a brain scrub possible for Joel (Jim Carrey), who realizes halfway through that, however painful, he can’t live without any trace of his soulmate, Clementine (Kate Winslet), the manic free spirit with the Kool-Aid-colored hair. As Joel tries to hold on to the good times while his mind’s being wiped, Kaufman allows audiences to absorb their best memories and make them our own. — PD

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Hugh Grant stammered his way into our hearts, fumbling and fluttering his eyelids the whole way, in a delightfully English rom-com from screenwriter Richard Curtis (who juggled no fewer than eight couples in his 2003 directorial debut “Love Actually”). This more streamlined love story starts where practically every Jane Austen story ends: at the altar. Grant’s not the one getting hitched at those opening nuptials, though he does fall hard for an American guest played by Andie MacDowell. Their courtship is unconventional (it amounts to shagging anytime their friends tie the knot), but the chemistry is undeniable. When it’s time for Charles and Carrie to get married, however, each of them says their vows with someone else. So how do they wind up together? It’s the little surprises that delight. — PD

Out of Sight (1998)

In terms of sheer sex appeal, it’s hard to top the chemistry between George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, who play an incorrigible bank robber and the U.S Marshall tasked with apprehending him in Steven Soderbergh’s sultry, time-skipping Elmore Leonard adaptation. It’s steamy from the start, as a prison break leaves cop and quarry stuffed in a trunk together — a cozy way to get acquainted. Four years after “Pulp Fiction,” the picture came at a moment when Soderbergh was experimenting with film editing and features several nifty innovations, including an unconventional love scene that turns up the heat by cutting between flirtation and payoff. In one thread, Jack Foley and Karen Sisco roleplay in the hotel bar, pretending to be strangers. Skipping ahead, it teases glimpses of the “time out” where all this cocktail talk is headed: a striptease upstairs, in which the pair put aside their differences long enough to make love. — PD

The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988)

Great as he is, we don’t tend of think of Daniel Day-Lewis as an overwhelmingly romantic movie star. In Philip Kaufman’s heady, intoxicating, high-wire adaptation of the Milan Kundera novel, he plays Tomas, a character who is very much a fickle Lothario — a randy physician in 1960s Prague who bounces from one conquest to the next, though he does have a regular thing going with Sabine (Lena Olin), an artist who likes to spice their lovemaking with mirrors and bowler hats. But then Tomas meets Tereza (Juliette Binoche), whose gravity pulls him down to earth. And then the Soviet tanks come rolling in, blowing up all their lives. When that happens, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” becomes one of the most seriously moving love stories in cinema, a tale of three lost souls yearning to connect, to survive, to unlock love’s mystery. — OG

A Star Is Born (1954)

For 30 years, the Judy Garland/James Mason version of “A Star Is Born” was tainted by the messy circumstances of its making. The script kept getting rewritten, Garland was a notoriously unstable presence on set, and when the movie premiered in New York, it was three hours long — but executives at Warner Bros. then chopped it by half an hour, without so much as consulting the director, George Cukor. Yet when the movie was re-released in the ’80s, its reputation was elevated in a way that’s comparable to what happened with Hitchcock’s “Vertigo.” A world of moviegoers discovered that Cukor had crafted one of the most darkly entrancing love stories ever made. Its haunted spirit of rapture and loss is incarnated in Garland’s performance of “The Man That Got Away,” in Mason’s jaw-dropping drunken slap of Garland during a scene set at the Oscars, and in the tragic finale, which touches the secret heart of love: the faith necessary to sustain it. — OG

The Remains of the Day (1993)

Repression and strict social restraints are constantly keeping lovers apart in the works of director James Ivory, producer Ismail Merchant and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who together made a career’s worth of exquisitely nuanced literary adaptations frequently (and often unfairly) lumped in with lesser, made-for-TV costume dramas. While “A Room with a View” and “Maurice” are more overtly passionate, the trio’s take on Kazuo Ishiguro’s celebrated novel offers a heartbreaking portrayal of a couple kept apart by codes beyond their control. In this case, a butler (Anthony Hopkins) born and raised to serve the English aristocracy is so mindful of his place that he can’t bring himself to tell the housekeeper he adores (Emma Thompson) his true feelings. It’s wrenching to watch this docile attendant struggle between emotions for a colleague and devotion to his job, and yet, between the lines, and in these two masterful performances, are written volumes. — PD

Sid and Nancy (1986)

The director Alex Cox brought off something singularly audacious by centering a punk biopic on Sid Vicious, the Sex Pistols’ bassist and all-around showman-fuckup who was so dissolute most of the time that he could barely play his instrument or keep from nodding out. Yet the ultimate audacity of Cox’s film is that it dares to present Vicious’s relationship with Nancy Spungen, the torn-fishnet groupie from suburban Pennsylvania who turned him into a heroin addict, as if they were the Tristan and Isolde of the rock ‘n’ roll gutter. As Sid, Gary Oldman gives what may still be his greatest performance, and Chloe Webb, as Nancy, gives what is simply one of the most powerful performances in the history of cinema. Her Nancy is a caterwauling liar and junkie, such a damaged shard of a human being that it tears your heart apart just to behold her. Nancy and Sid are barely functional narcissist addicts, yet their love affair is fused on an animal level; they need each other to live, and to die. “Sid and Nancy” is raw and exhilarating — the greatest of all music biopics, and (not so incidentally) the most romantic. — OG

Moonlight (2016)

Told through poetic glimpses over three separate chapters in the life of its main character, “Moonlight” doesn’t feel like a love story at first. Director Barry Jenkins introduces Chiron at age 10, too young to recognize his own homosexuality, and yet already being teased as soft by his peers. In the middle segment, the boy meets Kevin, with whom he starts to explore his feelings, only to have that possibility derailed by bullying. Subverting stereotypes at every turn, the movie gives this lost soul a second chance in the final stretch, focusing on a tender, tentative reunion between Chiron (bulked up and thick-skinned from his time in prison) and his former crush. By this point, audiences are so invested in the character that “Moonlight” broke free of the rigid box that confines most queer stories to LGBT audiences, making it a crossover success and historic Oscar winner. — PD

The Apartment (1960)

The dialogue still zings and the heartbreak still stings in Billy Wilder’s ahead-of-its-time depiction of two Manhattan office drones who are both exploited by the same manager: Jack Lemmon plays ultra-cynical insurance salesman Bud Baxter, while Shirley MacLaine is Fran Kubelik, the elevator girl who brightens his days … but loves his boss. The plot (which involves Bud lending his place to higher-ups to schtup their secretaries) anticipates the #MeToo movement, while also acknowledging the reality that well-intentioned workers frequently fall for their colleagues. Bud goes about it the relatively respectful way, while Fran’s plight illustrates how unfair the world can be to those who mix business and pleasure. For audiences that love “Mad Men,” but identify with the underdog, the movie poses a wonderfully adult conundrum — one which forces Bud to decide between personal ethics and professional ambition, knowing it could all go sideways for him, career-wise. — PD

An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

In the New Hollywood ’70s, a great many aspects of classic big-screen romance — the unabashed yearning, the sparkle, the lock-step gender roles — began to fall by the wayside. There was a lot of chatter about how romance itself was fading out of the culture. But that’s part of what made “An Officer and a Gentleman” loom so large. In its meticulous throwback of a story about a drifter, played with pinpoint narcissistic glamour by Richard Gere, who enlists in the Navy and falls for one of the “Puget Sound Debs” (Debra Winger) who want to marry a future jet pilot, the movie seemed to bring back, for the post-feminist era, the kind of shamelessly ardent love story that had fallen out of fashion. It helped that director Taylor Hackford infused it all with a contempo grittiness. As a basic-training movie, “Officer” anticipated much of ”Full Metal Jacket,” but what makes it indelible is the hungry desire enacted by Debra Winger, whose gaze of soulful adoration brings Gere fully alive as a romantic actor. — OG

In the Mood for Love (2000)

Cinema could hardly conjure a more lovely or elegant couple than cigarette-smoking Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, who floats through stairwells in form-fitting cheongsams. Operating on the wisp of a plot, improvised and evolved over nearly a year, Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai denies these two beautiful avatars a conventional romance. They play neighbors who discover that their spouses are having an affair, and rather than sink to the same level, they indulge in a bit of imaginative detective work, reenacting how their partners might have met. This thin outline leaves near-infinite room for Wong to evoke a subjective range of responses from his audience, using the full range of cinematic tools — color, costume, gesture, music — to solicit a different reading from each viewer. Your mileage may vary, but keep in mind: Wong’s a feel-maker as much as a filmmaker, rewriting the rules via this elliptical dance between unrequited lovers. — PD

Moonstruck (1987)

At early test screenings, audiences weren’t falling for Norman Jewison’s now-classic New York romance the way they were supposed to, until he laid the tune “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie…” over the opening credits. Cher tamped down her natural glamour to embody pragmatic Italian-American widow Loretta Castorini, who’s ready to settle for Johnny’s (Danny Aiello) passionless marriage proposal when she meets his brother Ronnie, played by a hot-blooded Nicolas Cage. Let’s just say, Ronnie gives this sensible Catholic woman reason to go to confession. The script by John Patrick Shanley is all but bursting with culturally specific detail, from drool-worthy dishes to unusual superstitions, but it’s the colorful ensemble — family members who want what’s best for Loretta — that ultimately serves to validate her seemingly reckless choice. After a lifetime of listening to her head, she finally decides to follow her heart. That’s amore! — PD

City Lights (1931)

Charlie Chaplin stubbornly resisted the film industry’s embrace of sound, releasing this silent treasure into a sea of talkies. Cinema may have gone a different direction, but his stubborn adherence to pantomime (plus his obsessive need to reshoot every shot until perfect) makes this love story seem all the more timeless, as Chaplin’s signature character, the Tramp, falls for a blind flower seller (Virginia Cherrill). She mistakes him for a wealthy man, and the Tramp allows her to go on imagining him that way in the most poetic version of a familiar rom-com trope ever committed to film: At some point, he’ll have to come clean. Will she still love him when she discovers the truth? The final scene, in which she recognizes the vulnerable fool after her vision has been restored, not by sight but by contact, ranks among the medium’s most romantic. — PD

Bonnie and Clyde (1967)

Of the many qualities that made it a revolutionary movie, two stand above all others. The first, and most talked about, is how violent it was — the bystander shot through the eye, the climactic slow-motion blood ballet, and everything else that rubbed the audience’s nose in what being a criminal really meant. But the other quality that defined “Bonnie and Clyde” was how shockingly sultry and romantic it was. The ads for the movie said, “They’re young. They’re in love. And they kill people.” The subtext was that something in the connection between Faye Dunaway’s torrid hunger and Warren Beatty’s vulnerable stud glamour was itself so dangerous that it was lethal. Just check out the two stars’ faces as they exchange one last look before being strafed to death by a hail of bullets. That look is the essence of true love. — OG

The 'Before' Trilogy (1995, 2004, 2013)

Taken by itself, 1995’s “Before Sunrise” represents the perfect encapsulation of young love: Two strangers meet on a train, get off together in Vienna and spend the night walking and talking (there’s some debate as to whether they make love, as the movie’s too modest to show it). Nine years later, director Richard Linklater delivered one of the most satisfying sequels of all time in “Before Sunset,” reuniting with his two characters, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy), in Paris. Their time is once again limited, but now, the conversation deals with their regrets. But the attraction remains, and the movie ends with the implication they wind up together. But is it happily ever after? Linklater and company caught up with the pair once again with “Before Midnight,” and the movie finds them together, but dissatisfied, acknowledging the challenges that confront couples after nearly a decade together. It was impossible to guess when they first met how deep this relationship would go, and still anybody’s guess how it will end. — PD

Annie Hall (1977)

“I lurve you,” says Woody Allen’s Alvy Singer, coming about as close as he can to declaring his feelings for Annie Hall (Diane Keaton), the beguiling thrift-shop space cadet who charmed the world with her la-di-da innocence. Allen’s late-’70s classic was, at the time, a new kind of love story — the saga of a “relationship,” which is to say a partnership not truly built to last. And maybe Alvy Singer had to say “lurve” instead of “love” because, deep down, he wasn’t really sure that he could commit himself to the L-word. Yet the magic of “Annie Hall” is that is channeled how an entire generation had come to regard love in the age of therapeutic navel-gazing: as something intoxicating yet transient, rooted in a seems-like-old-times nostalgia that felt more at home looking back than forward. — OG

Jerry Maguire (1996)

Tom Cruise had always been a solo vessel — a cruise missile of a movie star. It was Cameron Crowe’s inspiration, in casting Cruise as a sports agent who gets tossed out of the game and has to reinvent himself as a better person in order to come back, to pair Cruise with Renée Zellweger, an unknown actor who did not come off like some female-movie-star equivalent of Tom Cruise. She had a homespun allure that seemed to be calling his cockiness, his very stardom, on the carpet. The beauty of the line “You complete me” is that Cruise seemed, at last, to be letting down the guard of a dozen years of mega-stardom. The beauty of “You had me at hello” is that it reminds us of how easy love is when it’s real. — OG

Roman Holiday (1953)

Audrey Hepburn plays the fed-up crown princess of an unspecified country in this escapist romp through the Eternal City. The project kicked off a seven-picture run with Paramount, during which she may as well have been the queen of Hollywood romances: “Sabrina,” “Funny Face,” “My Fair Lady” and more. Suffocating under the obligations of her position, she sneaks out during a European tour, landing in the hands of Gregory Peck’s dishonest (yet honorable) American newspaperman. He thinks he’s hit the jackpot, betting his editor he can deliver an exclusive interview with the princess — but he doesn’t gamble on falling for the dame. Their whirlwind romance lasts but a day, but in that time, the reporter gives Ann/Anya/Audrey a taste of freedom. She plays it coy for most of the movie, but the closeup on her face at the end says it all. — PD

Gone with the Wind (1939)

The scene where Clark Gable carries Vivien Leigh up the stairs, with intimations of (to put it mildly) erotic coercion, would not pass muster today. Yet that scene, and others that rhyme with it, are part of what make the most epic of Old Hollywood love stories one of the most darkly complicated and enthralling of Old Hollywood love stories. Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara is fierce, strong, manipulative — the Southern belle as aristocratic vixen — and so she and Rhett Butler are destined to turn love into a battle that’s doomed to end in a draw. But what heat and light their fireworks give off! “Gone with the Wind” is a movie that’s now seen as “problematic,” yet one of the most seemingly imperfect things about it — the alternating currents of sex and anger, devotion and contempt that fuel the central relationship — is what makes it such a tumultuous classic. — OG

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)

A couple needn’t end up together for a love story to stand the test of time. In the case of Jacques Demy’s bittersweet musical, there’s a relatable quality to the way circumstances keep a working-class French couple from their happily ever after. That downbeat fate serves to balance the bright colors and bold choice of delivering every line of dialogue, no matter how banal, through song. That recitative strategy is common enough in opera, but downright revolutionary on film, still fresh and highly unusual all these years later. Naive young Geneviève (Catherine Deneuve, doll-like at 19) sells umbrellas in the family shop. Guy (Nino Castelnuovo) fixes cars at a nearby garage. They seem destined to be together, until military service calls him away. Michel Legrand’s score leans into the melancholy what might have been in what feels like a snow globe rendering of real life. — PD

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

It’s a queer love story set entirely in the closet. Yet by dramatizing the inner lives of two cowboys who find a romantic home on the range in early 1960s Wyoming, Ang Lee’s breathtaking adaptation of the Annie Proulx short story undermined every expectation of contemporary audiences. In showing us two men who discover a love that they themselves think is forbidden, the film dramatizes how prejudice can worm its way into the very fabric of people’s lives; it also demonstrates that the myth of the straight-as-an-arrow American macho he-man is just that – a myth. At the same time, our yearning for Ennis and Jack to make a life for themselves becomes overwhelming in its heartbreak. The performances of Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger are indelible — and, in Ledger’s case, miraculous, as he turns the muffled, barely articulate Ennis into a living metaphor for a love that cannot speak its name. — OG

Ghost (1990)

It’s a love story, a ghost story, a corporate crime story, a pottery story, and a movie in which Whoopi Goldberg plays the world’s funniest cut-up mystic. But who would have guessed that just four months after “Pretty Woman,” it would be the headiest romantic movie of its year? The director, Jerry Zucker, was a veteran of the “Airplane!” troupe, yet somehow he juggled all these elements to touch a chord of pure fairy-tale rapture, spinning out the story of a New York banker who’s killed by a mugger and returns as a ghost to protect his artist girlfriend. The way Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore bond across the ectoplasmic divide is at once thrilling and moving (true love, it seems, knows no restrictions, from either physics or the spirit world). The film turned the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” into a retro smash, but only because of how it tapped the film’s emotions: intimate, operatic, quavering with devotion. — OG

Brief Encounter (1945)

It all began with a little piece of grit in her eye. Fortunately — or not — for Laura Jesson (Celia Johnson), a doctor was present to remove the offending particle, and when her vision cleared, there he stood, Dr. Alec Harvey (Trevor Howard), handsome and kind. The train station where this meeting happens serves as a kind of romantic purgatory, with each locomotive that steams through reminding Laura and Alec of their obligations to their actual partners. But every Thursday, they meet in town, too weak to resist the growing love between them — feelings which the conservative forces of the time could not condone, but which spoke to a human experience too widespread to go ignored. And so David Lean’s slender, achingly honest film has stood for years, staunchly refusing to judge two would-be adulterous souls, letting audiences in on a secret that even their spouses don’t suspect. — PD

A Star Is Born (2018)

It’s a seesawing Hollywood love story that’s been told on the big screen close to half a dozen times, yet never more powerfully or artfully than by Bradley Cooper in his astonishing directorial debut. From the bombastic kitsch of the 1976 Streisand/Kristofferson version, Cooper borrowed the idea of turning the central character into a rock ‘n’ roll star, and his performance as Jackson Maine — a half-deaf drunken burnout, running on fumes, even though he’s able to fool the world into thinking he’s still a rock god — grounds the soap-opera story in something disarmingly earthy and real. After The Emotional Rollercoaster Of ‘A Journey’, Here Are Another Five To Go On

Filipino tear-jerker A Journey tells the bitter-sweet story of three friends on a voyage of self-discovery to cope with life-changing news. The relationships between the threesome are the focus, and the film pulls every trick in the book to allow us to empathize with and relate to the cast. Silly stuff that aims for a heartbreaking resolution in its final act.

American Filipino Justin needs a translator after receiving a letter from his former partner. He eventually hires Tere to help, but as their relationship grows, so do their feelings, and the situation that brought them together now threatens to tear them apart again.

This is a trope-laden romantic comedy that knows exactly what it’s doing, earning it a place on our list.

A once-perfect couple find that they may have reached the end of the line as far as their romance goes, and decide to separate. However as they both try to move on with their lives, it becomes more and more obvious that what they had was more than the sum of its parts, and they are constantly reminded of their love for each other.

A simple story, but one that resonates, making this a must-see tear-jerker movie just like A Journey .

Young and loving couple Primo and George have been together for a long time and dream of spending their lives together. The film follows the ups and downs of the couple as they face real-world problems, such as career changes, that threaten to tear their lives apart.

The huge success of the film may have also been partly due to the real-life relationship of the two leads, and the goodwill they have drummed up from their invested audience.

This is a romantic tale with a sci-fi twist that looks at the premise of second chances. Once again, the film has two leads who are actually involved with each other in real life, adding to the romantic vibe of the movie.

Mary and John are finding that after years of marriage, the spark may be fading, however, a terrible accident takes Mary out of the equation until John realizes that there may be a way to rewind the events that have occurred.

Time travel and love stories have often been a poignant and thought-provoking mix, and this production looks at a notion we have all had: What if I could go back?

You Hurt My Feelings (2023)

There's the romance of new love, which burns hot and bright. But longtime couples know that eventually those passions settle turn into a new kind of comfortable romance. This movie, by Nicole Holofcener, is about what happens when the balance of a long-term relationship is thrown off. A writer overhears her husband tell a friend that he doesn't like her new book, and the lie eats away at her. The way they get over the betrayal — if they do — may not strike new couples as romantic, but the veterans know.

Cyrano (2022)

The love story of Cyrano de Bergerac is nothing new, but feels fresh in this adaptation through original songs, written by members of The National. Peter Dinklage gives a career-best performance as the title character, co-starring alongside Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Haley Bennett.

Decision to Leave (2022)

This is a movie for people who like their romances to be rolled up in danger and mystery. He has to figure out if she's as innocent as she claims, or if it's all part of her ploy.

Lady Chatterly's Lover (2022)

This movie is based on the super-steamy, often-banned novel by D.H. Lawrence, and it lives up to its source material in intensity. It follows the life of Constance Reid, an aristocratic wife whose eye turns toward her estate's gamekeeper when her husband returns from the war paralyzed from the waist down. Their affair would upend social norms in a variety of ways, but can she resist his allure?

Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)

Alithea (Tilda Swinton), a "narratologist," returns from shopping at a bazaar in Istanbul to discover one of her purchases contains a Djinn spirit (Idris Elba). Being someone who studies stories, she's reluctant to make a wish since she knows how those tales often end, so the Djinn tells her about every wish he's tried to grant in the past three centuries. The movie is surprisingly sweet, especially considering it's from George Miller, the director of Mad Max: Fury Road .

The Worst Person in the World (2021)

This Norwegian film, which was nominated in the Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards, is a coming-of-age story and romance melded together, focusing on the loves that come in and out of your life when you don't have yourself 100% together. (Who can't relate?) It mostly focuses on Julie (Renate Reinsve) and her journey to young adulthood, but Anders Danielsen Lie co-stars as the man she crosses paths with over and over.

The Last Letter From Your Lover (2021)

This movie unfolds in two timelines, so you get a contemporary romance along with one filled with great period details and costumes. In the present, a magazine writer is sent into the publication's archives for an assignment, where she finds a misfiled love letter detailing an affair that happened in the '60s. Still reeling from a recent breakup, she delves into researching the letter writers, uncovering more of their story.

Sylvie's Love (2020)

Sylvie and Robert meet when Robert gets a job at Sylvie's father's Harlem record shop in 1957. The movie then follows the couple through the years, as they navigate their ambitions, their unexpected setbacks and their feelings for each other.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

This film-festival favorite, which was nominated for a slew of awards at the end of 2019, follows a woman who is commissioned to travel to a remote island to paint a portrait of a woman as part of an arranged marriage; of course, she falls in love with her subject, and a forbidden romance ensues.

A Star Is Born (2018)

If you're looking for a story about people brought together by talent and torn apart by fame, you can watch a number of takes on A Star Is Born : There's the 1937 original with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, the 1954 version with Judy Garland and James Mason or the 1976 remake with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. But only the most recent one, with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, has a performance of the heart-rending song " Shallow ."

This film is about a love so strong it literally changed history. It's based on the real-life story of Richard and Mildred Loving, whose Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia , made it illegal for states to have laws barring interracial marriages.

Brooklyn (2015)

This is for anyone who's longed for a place as much as they've long for a person — it's definitely the one to watch if you're feeling homesick. Saoirse Ronan, who earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for this movie, plays an Irish immigrant who feels torn between her new country and her old one, in addition to missing old friends while meeting new. The movie also earned Oscar nods for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Carol (2015)

Based on the novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, Carol tells the story of an affair between two women in the 1950s, so you get the pleasure of watching all the sumptuous period dresses and interiors in addition to being swept away by the romance. This film also features an Oscar-nominated performances from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

You can watch these films over & over again, and never get sick get sick of them. Nothing gets me more excited to travel than a good travel film. It gives you the inspiration and the motivation to a new destination. So here is my personal list of the best travel movies of all time. Which ones are your favorites? I started to realize I had a travel obsession when all my favorite movies were based on crazy travel adventures. Once I’ve finished watching any of these films, I feel the instant urge to pack up everything and head out to explore the world. The experience is an eye-opening an emotional one for him, as he’s forced to make friends with complete strangers and examine his life during the 800km journey. It features a very eclectic mix of characters, all walking the path for their own personal reasons. The movie certainly made me more interested in traveling along the Camino at some point in my life. The Way is a heart-warming and beautiful story of a father who walked the Camino de Santiago trail in Spain, to honor his estranged son who recently died while trekking this trail. His experience was eye-opening and quite an emotional one, as he was compelled to make friends with total strangers as well as examine his life during his long 800 kilometer long journey. The film features a pretty eclectic blend of characters, all trekking the long trail for their own personal reasons.

They are all suffering from depression, and pop pain killers like candy. When it seems like nothing is going right, their crazy experiences along the way finally put things into perspective. The ultimate goal of healing and rejuvenation starts to happen. They finally start to grow up and turn into men. The movie is hilarious, and beautifully shot too. It will make you want to visit India.

Encounters At The End Of The World is an incredibly beautiful and funny movie about the people and animals who live in Antarctica. The film is done by Werner Herzog, one of my favorite directors. The individuals that work at the National Science Foundation research station are full of character, and most are permanent world travelers. Even if you’ve seen Discovery channel shows about Antarctica, this is totally different and fresh. I liked it much more than I thought I would, and it has earned a spot on my best travel movies list because as soon as it was over I wanted to pack up and head down there for a bit!

The film also does a fantastic job of depicting the struggle every traveler feels in their soul at the thought of returning to what is familiar after having experienced the challenges the world has waiting for you.

I have met very few travelers who aren’t obsessed with L’Auberge Espagnole. While there are numerous reasons to love this movie—the romance of Barcelona, the potent sexual tension, etc.—the number one reason why travelers crave this movie is because it’s so incredibly real. Anyone who has ever lived or studied abroad can instantly relate to this film and the way in which it traces the subtle cultural differences and real-life situations experienced by University-aged travelers. Watching L’Auberge Espagnole makes you want to call up long lost travel acquaintances and reminisce and laugh over a stiff drink and focus on the lighter, more important side of life. A final sticking point is the way in which the main character, Xavier, realizes that life’s various experiences and the personal connections you forge are ultimately what really matter, not your salary, title, or career. As this is a mantra many free-spirited travelers hold so dear it’s no wonder the film has fostered such a devoted following.

Adapted from Andre Aciman’s novel of the same name, the movie shows a powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy, Elio (Timothee Chalamet) and his parents’ summer guest, Oliver (Armie Hammer). Elio spends his summer with his professor father and mother in Italy, and is joined by Oliver, his father’s assistant, who spends the next few months with his family intending to do some research.

Elio and Oliver are curious about each other and they find themselves flirting, gazing and gracing each other to see if their attraction is shared. The camera captures every pleasured look on these actors’ faces as they pursue each other, each scene so hot you can practically feel the heat of the Italian summer radiating through the screen.

God’s Own Country (2017)

Francis Lee’s 2017 drama sees Josh O’ Connor playing Johnny, a young man living at home and helping his father and grandmother with their small farm. Most of his days are mundane, but that immediately changes when Romanian immigrant Gheorghe (Alec Secareanu) arrives in the spring to help out. His arrival awakens a curiosity in Johnny and the pair spend their days out in the field, till they grow fond of each other.

The first half of the movie sees the duo acting on their feelings and you can feel the electricity between them when they have to spend the night in a secluded barn after spending a day out in a field rebuilding a wall. Johnny and Gheorghe spend the night making sense of their attraction, using intimacy and sex to open themselves up to each other.

Malcom & Marie (2021)

Directed by Euphoria ’s Sam Levinson, the movie shows Zendaya and Washington riding through the highs and lows together. Dubbed “the story of love,” the film depicts the filmmaker fresh off a successful premiere of a new film running into trouble with his girlfriend as issues in their relationship begin to surface, testing the strength of their love. Malcolm & Marie is beautifully shot in black-and-white, and wrapped with superficial elegance to match the characters’ insecurities on how they are perceived.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, the film explores one Manhattan couple’s journey through moral territory and forbidden sexual desire. It follows the events in Dr. Bill Harford’s life after he is stunned upon learning his wife, Alice, contemplated having an affair. Bill finds himself on a wandering journey and his encounters with sex workers, a secret society and their mass orgy at a country estate. He also found out that one of his patients may be harbouring a deadly secret.

Mr & Mrs Smith (2005)

Even though Brangelina is no more, this movie still retains its sizzle. The playful film sees Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in a stagnating marriage, but both of them hide a secret from each other: They are assassins working for adversarial agencies. They are both assigned to kill the same target, Benjamin Danz, before discovering that they have to kill each other, sparking a series of explosive attacks.

The Handmaiden (2016)

Basically the definition of erotic in every imaginable way, this movie follows Sook-Hee (Tae-ri Kim), a young woman who is a maid to Lady Hideko (Min-hee Kim), a Japanese heiress living with her uncle at a country estate. Sook-Hee happens to be a thief who tries to swindle her new boss out of her fortune. However, things take a turn for the better when Sook-Hee and Hideko discover their desires for one another. The Handmaiden is also successful at making the most banal task, sensual. Aside from the blatant sex scenes, watch the movie and your dental health may just improve. 

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

The love story between rodeo cowboy Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) and ranch hand Ennis (Heath Ledger) is something else. Hired by rancher Joe Aguirre (Randy Quaid), Jack made a drunken pass at Ennis one night on Brokeback Mountain, which is reciprocated. Although Ennis married his longtime sweetheart Alma, and Jack marries a fellow rodeo rider, the two men keep up with their affair over the course of 20 years.

Sex Education (2019)

Forward-thinking, diverse and fun, you’ll find yourself emotionally invested in each and every character in this quirky series. This popular British comedy-drama primarily focuses on the discomfort of teenage sexuality, and it follows a group of students who create an “underground” sex therapy clinic to help other kids with their relationship woes.

Now in its third season, you’ll find that the portrayal of sex in this show is utterly realistic in a way that you’ll find yourself cringeing and laughing. Some parts of it can also be pretty hot. An excellent choice for a date night pick: you’ll chuckle and maybe, become a little bit aroused. 

American Pie (1999)

We probably won't see a phenomenon like American Pie again. The raunchy sex comedy gives a hysterical look at obnoxious high schoolers making an ultimate pact: losing their virginity by prom night. Watch as they manipulate their way into the hearts of some girls, and fail spectacularly. One manages to score with a hot foreign exchange student, and then ditches her at the end with a band member who knows her way with the flute. Another guy desperately hires someone to make up rumours about him, building himself a “reputation” among schoolmates. Sit back and enjoy this hit comedy and, oh, you’ll also never look at warm apple pie the same way again.

The Naked Director (2019)

This raunchy drama is about one of the most innovative Japanese porn directors of all time. Based on Nobuhiro Motohashi’s non-fiction novel Zenra Kantoku Muranishi Toru Den , it tells the story of Toru Muranishi, a failed English textbook salesman turned into a provocative director of adult videos who revolutionised the adult entertainment industry during the 1980s Japan.

Filled with sex, money, and attention from the authorities and crime syndicates, The Naked Director is a balance between sex comedy and action-packed underworld narrative combined with pornographic revolution. You will find yourself laughing at ridiculous porn shoots before watching the characters tangling with the Yakuza in love hotels, sex shops and drunken karaoke bars.

The Witcher (2019)

Full of fantastic beasts and epic battle scenes, this Netflix show is shot beautifully and packed with hot characters. And an orgy or two. It follows the story of Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a mutant with special powers who kills monsters for money.  Expect dragons, sorcerers, beheadings and hot and heavy beddings.

Euphoria (2019)

This gritty series gives an insight at the complex teenage life that Generation Z must navigate, including exploring sexual relationships from a wide array of perspectives. I n the show, Zendaya plays Rue, a high school student who self-medicates herself with drugs and alcohol to numb her emotional pain. Among other teens, the show does have a lot of sex and drugs. The premiere episode itself depicts an overdose, and a sex scene involving choking. One scene in the second episode reportedly shows 30 penises!

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

We all know that the Fifty Shades of Grey  franchise is basically low-key softcore porn. This modern-day erotic drama is great to watch during Valentine’s Day, together with your significant other. The film follows a straight-laced student, Anastasia (Dakota Johnson), interviewing the handsome and wealthy Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), and it’s attraction at first sight for them both. They find themselves entangled in a toxic yet extremely intense and passionate affair. She finds herself being controlled by Grey, but when he introduces her to the dark world and kinky tastes, she begins to explore her own desires for the first time. 

This show may certainly give you a few ideas on how to spice up your bedroom activities by trying out new moves, just to bring that extra bit of passion back into your relationship. 

Sleeping With Other People (2015)

This 2015 romcom is a great pick, if you are looking for a film that has likeable leads and also happens to have a lot of sex in it. Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie star as two sex addicts who fall in love, and it’s full of sexual tension, easy-going chemistry and charm. Written and directed by the creator of Netflix’s Russian Doll , the cute comedy is a mix of sophistication and unabashed raunch.

Sex/Life (2021)

From pool to elevator sex, the raunchy scenes in this Netflix series are plentiful. An adaptation of BB Easton’s novel 44 Chapters About 4 Men, Sex/Life sees Billie Connely (Sarah Shahi)  a woman with two small children, who lives in a big house in the suburbs with her husband, Cooper. Unsatisfied with her sexual life, she starts to dream about her former life, and the private romantic rendezvous with her ex-boyfriend, Brad. The episodes cut between her two lives: hot and heavy rendezvous with Brad, or staying solid with Cooper. Who will she choose?

Bridgerton (2020)

If you haven’t jumped on the Bridgerton bandwagon, now is the time. A fresh perspective on historical romance, the series is based on Julia Quinn’s epic eight-part romance novel series of the same name. Taking place in the early part of the 19th century, the film is concerned with the romantic entanglements of society’s upper crust. The Netflix drama is addictive to watch, and it is full of stolen glances and whispered rumours, scandals and seductions, wounded pride and star-crossed love, lavish balls and string quartet renditions of songs.

It starts with PG scenes of many period pieces until the two main characters Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Bassett tie the knot. Now that they are free to consummate, viewers get a tasty treat when the couple cannot get their hands off of each other as they have sex in the open field, in the rain and even on a ladder.

The Blue Lagoon (1980)

Marooned on a tropical island, Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins, a gleaming, golden teen couple live in an innocent idyll until their hormones take over. In handmade beachwear, they become a sun-bleached Adam and Eve… without the apple.

9½ weeks (1986)

Full of erotic and steamy scenes, this film will certainly get both your juices flowing. Wall Street trader John and art gallery assistant, Elizabeth find themselves in a courtship that becomes highly sexual. Their steamy love affair involves more daring and kinky scenarios including striptease and bondage. One, in particular, has them exploring all the uses for milk and honey on the kitchen floor. Food for thought, seriously.

Love & Other Drugs (2010)

Jamie (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a pushy salesman for Pfizer, who struggles to get doctors to prescribe Zoloft, his company’s medication for depression. He bamboozles his way into hospitals and seduces receptionists to get his products on sale. Jamie becomes a big hitter after Pfizer launches the wildly popular Viagra. At the same time, he fell for Maggie (Anne Hathaway), a smart and vulnerable woman who has stage one Parkinson’s. The condition, unfortunately, has no drug remedies. Solid if not spectacular, Love & Other Drugs is a sharp, yet sensitive and sexily romantic tale that's a cut above the usual cookie-cutter affairs.  

Moulin Rouge (2001)

This breathtaking baroque film stars Nicole Kidman as Satine, a star dancer at the notorious Moulin Rouge who has a deadly secret; she is dying of tuberculosis. Romantic poet Christian falls madly in love on the first glimpse of the club's star. She returns his feelings and they both battle with her deteriorating health and a jealous Duke, who is set on separating them. The film beautifully marries theatre and opera, while giving you sexy, sensual and seductive scenes all in one.

No Strings Attached (2011)

Anyone who’s secretly wanted something more from their hookup buddy will swoon over this one. Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher play two close friends who decide to start sleeping together, “no strings attached.” However, after some birthday party and workplace shenanigans, their time together turns into something more. With Portman and Kutcher making out at different parts of the show, this romantic comedy can just get you a little hot under the collar.

Of course, in the process of coming up for and planning this plan, Emma and Peter get to know each other and unwittingly develop feelings for each other. What begins as a carefree, run-of-the-mill chick-flick soon finds its emotional core, with an often tear-jerking narrative spine gently guiding the viewer by the hand into the film’s darker themes. A tale of friendship and passion, the film is catapulted into orbit by the perfect chemistry between A’zion and Shahidi, with the direction of Trish Sie managing to capture the twinkle in both women’s performances. Sensitive and funny, Sitting in Bars with Cake is certainly one to watch. - Jake Hodges

'Red, White & Royal Blue' (2023)

'Secretary' (2002)

Secretary is a sultry romance that will dominate your heart, making you submit to its charm and sexy seduction scenes. The film stars James Spader ( Boston Legal ) as a domineering and demanding lawyer who hires Maggie Gyllenhaal ( The Dark Knight ) as his secretary before they engage in an affair in which they explore each other’s limits through BDSM-style play. Though this comedy plays up sadomasochism for laughs, the text of the film doesn’t look down on the practice and, in fact, embraces it, allowing the two lovers to find themselves in their desires. It’s an off-beat romance that strays from the classic beats of the usual romcom and paves its own path to an original story that would later be mirrored in the Fifty Shades of Grey series.

'About Fate' (2022)

Starring Emma Roberts , Thomas Mann , Madelaine Petsch ( Riverdale ), Lewis Tan ( Shadow and Bone ), and Britt Robertson ( The Rookie: Feds ), About Fate focuses on the unexpected chaos of blossoming love between two people who find each other only to have every obstacle thrust upon their journey back to each other. With a message about the importance of love, About Fate is a charmingly quaint romantic comedy. – Yael Tygiel

'Somebody I Used to Know' (2023)

Directed by Dave Franco ( The Disaster Artist ) and co-written with his wife Alison Brie ( GLOW ), Somebody I Used to Know is a beautiful story about lost love and discovering who you are inside and outside of a relationship. Brie not only co-wrote the story but also stars as the main character, Ally, who reconnects with her old hometown ex-boyfriend Shaun ( Jay Ellis ) the week of his wedding. The fiancé, played by Kiersey Clemons , connects with Ally in a way that makes them both reflect on their relationships with the man they share feelings for. Ellis and Brie have so much chemistry on screen that it makes the audience root for them to be together, but you also understand the draw towards Clemmons. The film captures a nuanced perspective on the “hometown ex” trope that is rarely seen in the modern rom-com and is bolstered by spectacular understated performances. – Tauri Miller

'Shotgun Wedding' (2023)

If you like a bit of action with your cocktail of romance and comedy, Shotgun Wedding is the film for you. A destination wedding quickly goes sour when pirates take the guests hostage, leaving Darcy ( Jennifer Lopez ) and Tom ( Josh Duhamel ) to plan their escape and rescue their friends and family. Lopez and Duhamel lead this romp along with a host of character actors, including Jennifer Coolidge ( The White Lotus ), Cheech Marin ( Up in Smoke ), and D'Arcy Carden ( The Good Place ), that keep the comedy fresh and lively. Despite this being Jason Moore’s ( Pitch Perfect ) first foray into action-driven storytelling, he manages to deliver a film full of grit and playfulness. – Tauri Miller

'My Policeman' (2022)

My Policeman explores an intense and devastating love triangle between a policeman named Tom ( Harry Styles ), schoolteacher Marion ( Emma Corrin ), and museum curator Patrick ( David Dawson ). Taking place in 1950s Britain, things are even more complicated due to the attraction between Tom and Patrick and the fact that homosexuality is illegal. My Policeman is simply heartbreaking, telling a story of forbidden love and lamenting lost time, diving into what happens when you’re not allowed to be yourself. Starring Eva Reign in her feature debut as the young Kelsa, a confident high school senior with a talent for art who is transitioning while also falling in love for the first time with Khal, played by Abubakr Ali ( Katy Keene ). As their relationship blooms and the drama ensues, Anything’s Possible focuses on the universal issues of any new, young relationship, while writer Ximena García Lecuona ’s script allows this journey to unfold and challenge outdated expectations. –Yael Tygiel

'Sylvie's Love' (2020)

If it’s a swooning period piece you’re looking for, Sylvie’s Love is a guaranteed hit. A lush, lovely slow-burn, Eugene Ashe ’s romantic drama stars Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha as a pair of ambitious creatives, who first spark a connection over their love of jazz in 1957 New York; a connection that ties them together for a passionate, decades-long love affair with intoxicating highs and heartbreaking lows. Cinematographer Declan Quinn frames a rich, sumptuous world for their love to take root, set to a fantastic and appropriately jazzy soundtrack. Sylvie’s Love moves a little too slowly at times, but all that time with the characters, and giving them so many moments to let the emotions breathe, also pulls you deeper into their lovely, though fraught, love story.

'Life Itself' (2014)

I cannot, in all good conscience, tell you that Life Itself is a good romance movie. It is, however, an absolutely baffling, unpredictable, one-of-a-kind cinematic experience that you have to see to believe. Just try to keep up with the emotionally terroristic twists and turns of Life Itself‘ s melodrama. Remember the first episode of This Is Us , and that big “Oh shit” moment of realization at the end? Life Itself is like the weaponized version of that, over and over again, in a completely ridiculous, cuckoo bananas, epic love story with an over-the-top wealth of talent in the ensemble. Proceed with caution, but also, do not miss it.

'Brittany Runs a Marathon' (2019)

Rotten tomatoes: 88% | imdb: 6.8/10, brittany runs a marathon.

Brittany Runs a Marathon is not the movie you think it is, in the very best way. The film stars Jillian Bell as an overweight woman who sets out to train for and run the New York marathon as a way to get in shape, which she also believes will change her life for the better. Changes do come, but they’re a mix of positive and negative as Bell’s character learns the hard way that her issues are related to who she is as a person rather than how she looks on the outside. It’s a surprising, sweet, and frequently hilarious comedy with a dash of romance for good measure. But it’s also genuinely moving, and Bell gives a star-making performance that deftly navigates both comedic and dramatic territory. Brittany Runs a Marathon isn’t just one of the best comedies of 2019, it’s also one of the best films of the year full-stop. – Adam Chitwood

'The Big Sick' (2017)

Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon ’s real-life love story serves as inspiration for the most delightful romantic comedy in years in The Big Sick . Directed by Michael Showalte r from a script by Nanjiani and Gordon, the film stars Nanjiani as himself and Zoe Kazan as Emily in the stranger-than-fiction story of two people falling in love despite clashing cultures, family expectations, and a mysterious life-threatening illness.

The story follows a standup comic (Nanjiani) who falls for a woman who heckles him (Kazan) at a show. He tries to hide the relationship from his parents, who expect a strictly traditional arranged marriage to a Muslim woman, but their romance faces an even greater hurdle when she falls into an inexplicable coma and he bonds with her parents (who you can't help but fall in love with thanks to the performances from Ray Romano and Holly Hunter ). Bursting with heart and earnest good nature, The Big Sick is a witty and charming exploration of love, commitment and family, and it’s a bonafide crowd-pleaser to boot.

'The Handmaiden' (2016)

The Handmaiden is the most downright gorgeous erotic thriller ever made. Liberally inspired by Sarah Waters ‘ British melodrama, Chan- wook Park gives the source material a cultural transplant to 1930s Japan-occupied Korea where Sook-Hee ( Tae- ri Kim ) takes a job as a handmaiden to the mysterious, troubled Lady Hideko ( Min- hee Kim ), sparking a passionate affair that reshapes their lives. Our entry point to the twisted tale is through Sook-Hee, a thief by trade and family tradition who is in fact teaming with a fake count Fujiwara ( Ha Jung-woo ) in a scheme to defraud Lady Hideko of her fortune, but when Sook-Hee falls for her mark, the fiendish plan is thrown for a loop as new layers of deception and manipulation are uncovered at every turn.

According to producers Spencer McLaren , D.J. McPherson , and Jack Christian , Everything I Never Did “is a bittersweet love story that throws away cliches and sparks with originality, spontaneity, and surprise. It tells the story of troubled teen Liam Black and Jenna Reid ( Grace ), a seriously ill girl, who together embark on a transformative journey of living and loving in the face of adversity.”

Additional casting details have not been revealed. Production will begin in late 2024.

Video shows secret methods used to sneak migrants into US by ‘coyotes’

Videos show smugglers’ trek into US with illegal immigrants

Videos being published on TikTok by a smuggler are giving an insight into how illegal immigrants are smuggled across the border, in what one journalist describes as a "brazen" display of illegal activity.

The videos, collected by independent journalist Auden Cabello, show migrants moving through gates and marching across territory in northern Mexico , covering their footprints as they go in some cases.

Some of them are in camouflage as they make the treacherous trek north to the U.S. border.

Eventually, a group is pictured in a car on the highway, suggesting they are in the U.S. and have gotten in as "gotaways" who have evaded Border Patrol. What stood out to Cabello is that the smuggler, who he said posts to Facebook as well as TikTok, didn’t seem to want to hide his activities.

"The main thing that stood out is how brazen he is in documenting his whole journey of getting illegals into the U.S. and just what he's saying… in a way he's mocking U.S. authorities," Cabello said in an interview with Fox News Digital. 

"To him, it makes it very easy to get people across the border illegally," he said.

Cabello, who has reported from both sides of the border, said he has seen videos like this before, but not to this extent, given the detail with which this smuggler documented the whole journey.

"There are countless numbers of accounts documenting similar, similar journeys, or crossings of illegals into the U.S.," he said.

But he said most smugglers, or coyotes, want to keep their routes secret in case Mexico or other authorities crack down on them. 

"Most of the smugglers want to keep it secret. They don't want to disclose their operations, especially on social media, because then they'll get law enforcement behind them," he said. 

Asked whether he thinks the smuggler is showing off or trying to gain more business from other migrants, Cabello said it is both.

"It's both. It's showing off, and it's also business because he's saying, ‘It's guaranteed, hire me. I'll get you across easily.'"

The U.S. remains in the grip of a historic border crisis , with data suggesting the number of "gotaways" may be on the rise. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources told Fox News that Border Patrol recorded 779 known gotaways on Monday.

Fox News Digital reported last week on groups of illegal immigrants being apprehended in the El Paso Sector , as smugglers tried to guide migrants through the mountains while evading Border Patrol.

Great app but one small but essential thing

I just got this app and I already enjoy it! Though when it says I get free 20 generations, I was hoping I would get a few free generations a day (like 3-5 or something). I was a little bummed out when i see that it’s not the case. So as a suggestion, i would like there be a few free generations a day kind of feature. I’m sure folks would love that. Other than that, I really enjoy this app.

Does Not Work with High Load of Generations

The Niji journey app make my phone hotter than when I’m playing a graphic intensive game like genshin or tower of fantasy. When I begin to do more than 4 generations I only do 3 at a time, my phone gets hot the app basically stops responding. It makes it impossible to look up a previous photo to make generation of it. When you got to your profile it takes 3+ mins to load your list and then once you are there it won’t let you select any of them. The app has more functionality than discord and more options but it’s almost unusable after 10 mins or one visit to your profile page. Please fix this for those who generate high numbers of photos.

Pretty good

Mainly, there are no issues that have really messed with the app or the experience. The app runs smoothly, you can see the image progress, you can choose prompts, and add reference photos which is all amazing. HOWEVER, a big issue I run into is when a ‘Job failed to run’ while using a free trial. It takes one of your free generations without even showing a result. Or if you cancel a generation, you don't get your little trial generation back. The app is good, I’m just not sure if these are bugs or something :)

Is quantum computing an enabler for the decarbonisation of aviation.

It is still early days for quantum computing. Yet experts agree it is poised to play a key role in sectors ranging from secure communications to banking and aerospace. Quantum’s appeal lies in its ability to overcome computational bottlenecks.

Airbus’ purpose is to pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world. Although still in development, quantum computers have potential in two areas that are key to realising that ambition: busting the design logjam caused by limits on current computational power in time for the next generation of aircraft, and boosting the efficiency of airline operations.  

Here’s a roundup of some of the exciting quantum explorations Airbus is supporting.

Optimisation powered by quantum speed and accuracy

Trajectory optimisation 

In the future, quantum algorithms could help optimise an aircraft’s trajectory in real time by taking air traffic restrictions and weather patterns into account. This has obvious safety, economic and ecological benefits. 

Flights operate in a dynamic environment affected by an intractably large number of variables, especially during climb-out. The speed and accuracy of calculations are key. Quantum algorithms may be able to outperform current high-performance computers for each.

To this end, in 2023 Airbus’ Silicon Valley innovation centre Acubed carried out a study into quantum trajectory optimisation .

Efficient cargo loading

Half of global airfreight travels onboard passenger flights. Filling cargo containers and then fitting them into the hold of a jetliner is like a giant game of Tetris. Space is at a premium, and the loading of each container must be just so. If the overall centre of gravity in the hold is off, the aircraft will burn more fuel. If the cargo is stacked too far to the left, the left-hand engine has to work harder, consuming even more fuel. 

Like trajectory optimisation, cargo loading is fraught with constraints. Quantum computers leverage the so-called  ‘knapsack problem’ to calculate an optimum solution for loading packages into cargo containers, and the containers into the hold. In 2022, Airbus performed a use case demonstrator using  IonQ’s quantum computer .  

To give an idea of the challenge loadmasters face, organising just 20 containers each stuffed with 30 packages in the hold produces a ‘solution space’ – the set of all solutions to a given problem – that exceeds the total number of particles in the universe. No existing computer or analytic solution can solve that puzzle accurately. 

Mimicking nature: What happens when molecules collide?

Fuel cell simulation 

Hydrogen-powered aircraft produce no carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide emissions during flight. They release only water vapour into the atmosphere. 

There are two options for designing hydrogen propulsion systems: burning the gas directly in a turbine engine; or installing fuel cells which use hydrogen to create electricity through electrolysis. 

Airbus has joined forces with the automotive sector to advance fuel cell development for aeronautic applications. However, the cells must be lightweight as well as powerful enough to get a plane off the ground. 

This combination relies on some complex chemistry. Electrolysis requires a catalyst to get going. Platinum is particularly suitable for this purpose, yet relatively expensive. The alternative is to create alloys – platinum with cobalt or nickel, for example – which also show a higher beginning-of-life performance than pure platinum. However, lab testing these alloys can be an expensive task. 

Instead, alongside colleagues at BMW Group, Airbus researchers have  shown for the first time that quantum computing can perform atomic-level reaction modelling. Harnessing quantum’s exponential power that is beyond the reach of today’s computers, engineers can model the relative catalytic behaviour of each alloy. Their observations contribute to propulsion and design choices that will one day have a significant, favourable impact on aerospace’s carbon footprint. 

Computational fluid dynamics: Where maths, physics and computer science intersect  

The first port of call when designing a new aircraft is often  computational fluid dynamics , or CFD. This sophisticated digital simulation of airflow around an airframe informs its shape and aerodynamic efficiency. Today, CFD is performed by energy-intensive, high-performance computers (HPC) and it has become a bottleneck in the aircraft design cycle as HPCs reach their maximum processing power.

Airbus has signed a partnership with two leading European Research facilities, ONERA (French Aerospace Research Center) and DLR (German Aerospace Center) during an official ceremony at Paris Air Show.

Quantum computing is able to operate on a far larger canvas, or mesh, permitting CFD calculations to be performed at an exponentially higher scale. It has the potential to break the design bottleneck  for future aircraft. 

CFD is an area under study in the  Quantum Mobility Quest and through  EQUALITY , a European consortium which counts Airbus as a member. The consortium is dedicated to developing quantum algorithms in order to solve a set of ‘paradigmatic’ industry problems.   

As these examples show, quantum computing clearly has the potential to support aviation on its decarbonisation journey.

Airbus and the BMW Group both recognise quantum’s promise. The companies joined forces in 2023 to launch the  Quantum Mobility Quest . The Quest’s aim is to team up with leading players to accelerate and mature quantum solutions that could one day help the industry solve its most complex challenges.
