Hawaii Movie Tour®
With its striking natural beauty, Kauai has long been a destination for Hollywood filmmakers intent on capturing the island’s unspoiled terrain. See famous locations for Pirates of the Caribbean , Jurassic Park , and more!
FUN THINGS TO DO IN KAUAI
Located at 22°05′N 159°30′W, Kauai has a total land area of 562.3 square miles and a population of over 67,000 people.
Kauai is a place that sets the imagination soaring. Her extraordinary beauty and charm have been immortalized in dozens of Hollywood films and television shows, yet there’s nothing like meeting the real thing. View Kauai through the lens of Hollywood on our Hawaii Movie Tour .
Perhaps the most striking quality of Kauai is her Eden-like loveliness. The chiseled ridges and valleys of Kauai’s Mt. Waialeale are cloaked, velvet-like, by emerald rainforests. Dramatic cliffs tower thousands of feet above the vast Pacific Ocean. The island’s edges are scalloped with sandy beaches and snorkeling spots frequented by Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles. Lying hidden from sight are remote valleys, waterfalls, and sea caves, accessible only via air or sea.
There are many ways to feel Kauai’s charm: visit beautiful waterfalls, take a leisurely cruise along Wailua River to the famed Fern Grotto on our Waimea Canyon and Fern Grotto Tour , and find inspiration at Waimea Canyon – a geological wonder measuring 14 miles long and more than 3,600 feet deep. Cinema fans can follow their favorite actors and see, first-hand, some of Kauai’s iconic sites captured in blockbuster films.
There are small towns to visit, local foods to sample, historic points of interest, and much more worth finding – on Kauai, Hawaii’s Island of Discovery.

- North Shore, Hanalei Valley
- East Side, Na Pali Coast
- South Shore, Poipu Beach

25 Best Kauai Tours & Excursions (Activities For Everyone)

Kauai is definitely the most adventurous island of the Hawaiian Islands. 97% of Kauai is undeveloped rainforest and mountains. Many of these Kauai tours will allow you to explore everything this great island has to offer. From flying over and in-between untouched valleys, exploring dramatic coastlines from the sea, or diving with unique marine life, there is so much to see on these Kauai Tours.
Two companies Jake and I love using when booking tours and excursions are Viator & Get Your Guide. These platforms have collected the best tours around the island, and help connect local tour companies with people like you and I. We’ve always had a great experience from excellent communication, transportation provided when needed, and pairing us with local guides for an all-around epic tour.
This is NOT Sponsored, we just want to provide the best Kauai Tours to you, so you can get out and explore this beautiful island. If there is no tour with Viator or Get Your Guide, we have linked to a local tour company!

Helicopter Tour or Airplane Tour
One of the most popular tours in Kauai is a helicopter ride over the island. Tours typically last about an hour and fly over the famous natural wonders on the island of Kauai.
Highlights of this tour are Manawaiopuna Falls (the famous waterfall from the Jurassic Park Movie), Waimea Canyon, Napali Coast, Hanalei, and Waialeale (the wettest spot on earth).
There are many different tours to choose from, such as photography tours, doors-off or doors-on tours, and/or private tours. In our opinion, a small 4-person, doors-off helicopter tour will provide the best overall experience.
For the adventure of a lifetime, choose a specialty helicopter tour that has exclusive access to land at Olokele Canyon and/or Jurassic Falls.
Most tours typically leave from the nearby Lihue Airport.
All the helicopter tours will be pretty expensive. So if you are looking for a cheaper way to fly over Kauai, consider an airplane tour. Do note, airplanes can not get very low, therefore tours won’t be able to fly down into the valleys like many of the helicopter rides.
Find other unique ways to explore the Nā Pali Coast .
Another awesome way to experience the Napali Coast, and other areas along the Kauai Coast is a boat tour. Boat tours are typically half-day (4-5 hours), with a tour leaving in the morning and afternoon. Generally, most tours will take off from the north or south shore and head toward the Na Pali Coast for some epic sightseeing.
Guests can witness spinner dolphins, humpback whales, sea turtles, monk seals, and other marine life on their journey. Along the breathtaking shoreline, there are tons of sea arches, hidden caves, and the magnificent lush green valleys of the Napali Coast.
There are tons of different tours and boat types tourists can choose from. Smaller boats might offer a unique ride into sea caves. But larger boats might ride better through the rough sea. Additionally, some tours might offer meals or additional snorkel tour.
The best time for a boat tour along the Na Pali Coast is in the summer when the ocean is calmer. Winter weather can bring rougher seas, and sometimes even cause tours to be canceled.
Go To A Luau
One of the most authentic Kauai tours is to attend a local Luau. Most luaus will include food and drink, a traditional imu pig roast ceremony, and an entertaining hula Kahiko (ancient hula) dance with flame throwers.
There are a few different luau’s around the island. So whether you are staying on the east or south side, you can attend a famous Luau. Do note, luaus often reach their capacity limit well in advance, so book your tickets before traveling to Kauai if you can.
Book the Luau Ka Hikina in Ka’paa
Book the Luau Kalamaku in Lihue
Or Book the Aulii Luau in Poipu
Take Surf Lessons
Hawaii is known for its great surf breaks, so why not try your hand with a surf lesson? Whether you’re a beginner and have never surfed before or want to improve your surfing skills, there are lessons for all levels. Choose between group lessons or a private surf lesson.
The north and east coasts of Kauai are typically the best place for surf lessons.
Snorkeling Tour
Most Snorkeling Kauai tours will bring you to epic locations and ensure you see some authentic marine life. From vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, and maybe even some Hawaiian green sea turtles.
There are a few different tours offered on the island. You can just snorkel from land, kayak out to some further locations, or jump on a boat.
One of the most exclusive tours explores the Kaulakahi Channel to Lehua Crater, the “Forbidden Island” of Ni’ihau. Book this Exclusive Snorkel Tour
Or Choose From These Epic Snorkel Excursions:
Go deeper with a Scuba Diving Tour
The best way to get deeper into the marine life that lives around the coast of Kauai is with a scuba diving expedition. Whether you are certified or want to learn the basics, there are tours for all levels.
Here are some unique Scuba Diving Kauai tours
- Non-certified Scuba Expedition
- 2-Tank Certified Scuba Tours
- Unique Scuba Diving Scooter Adventure
Zipline Through The Rainforest
For tourists that seek adventure, ziplining in Kauai is the best tour. Fly over lush rainforests and unique flora, and discover the history of this Garden Island. Depending on the tour, guests can ride between 3-8 different lines.
There are zipline tours in the south in Koloa or in the east near Lihue .
Kayak the Wailua River to Secret Falls
Experience a kayak adventure down the Wailua River to Uluwehi Falls (aka Secret Falls). Hiking to this unique location is one of the best places to hike in Kauai . It can only be accessed by traveling up the river.
The journey starts with a 2-mile paddle up the river to the Secret Falls trailhead. Guests will “beach” their kayak and hike 1 mile (one-way) to the Secret Falls.
Once you reach the falls, there is a nice swimming hole where guests can take a refreshing swim.
Do note, there are a few river crossings along the hike where the water might be up to knee-deep. There are also boardwalks in place where the ground is a bit soft and/or muddy.
Book a Wailua River Kayaking Tour
Private Hiking Tour through Waimea Canyon & Surrounding Area
If you want to be brought to all the best places Kauai has to offer, consider a private tour of the south part of the island.
On this Kauai tour, knowledgeable tour guides will bring you through Waimea Canyon to visit epic lookouts including Waipo’o Falls and the Kalalau Lookout. This area is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, so you don’t want to miss this area. This massive colorful canyon is simply breathtaking.
There are tons of great hiking options in Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park .
Plus the tour stops at Poipu Beach to see Hawaiian Sea Turtles and Hawaiian Monk Seals. And a bonus stop at the famous Spouting Horn.
Book a Private Waimea Canyon Tour
Waimea Canyon Downhill Bike Ride
Another fun tour to do in Waimea Canyon is to ride down the long hill from the top of the canyon back to sea level. Surprisingly, when standing at the Kalalau Valley Lookout, the very top of the Canyon, you are 4,000 feet above sea level.
So after a full day of exploring both Kokee State Park and Waimea Canyon, riding down the hill is one of the most thrilling adventures.
On the way up to the top of the canyon (in a van), groups will stop at various viewpoints and lookouts. The tour guide will brief everyone on the Hawaiian history and culture surrounding this area.
Book a Waimea Canyon Downhill Bike Ride
For the ultimate off-road adventure, one of the best Kauai Tours is an ATV excursion. Hop on an ATV and ride through old plantations and up to a dormant volcano. ATV Adventures explore all the epic locations from Makai (ocean) to Mauka (mountain).
Book an ATV Adventure Tour
Whale & Dolphin Excursion
While Maui is more famously known for whale watching, it can still be equally as great in Kauai. The best time to spot whales is during migration season in the winter months (December through May).
The best way to experience these gentle giants is on a small tour boat. They often breach and even come close to the boat for people to touch them. It’s probably one of the coolest Kauai Tours to be so close to such massive animals.
Dolphins are also friendly water animals that often put on a show for tourists. Watching the dolphins swim underwater and do flips in the air can be one of the most amazing experiences.
Book a Whale Watching Tour
Romantic Dinner Sail
What’s more romantic than a dinner during sunset overlooking the Na Pali Coast? One of the best Kauai Tours is a romantic dinner sail out at sea. Tours last around 4-5 hours and leave from the south in Eleele. Boats sail the coast along the west shoreline to the Napali Coast and back during golden hour.
Book a Romantic Dinner with Viator
Book a Sailing Dinner Tour with Get Your Guide
Chocolate Tasting
If you love chocolate then the Princeville Botanical Gardens Tour and Chocolate Tasting is the perfect Kauai tour for you. Guests will go on a guided tour through the Princeville Botanical Gardens and learn about all the different plants on the island. Especially learning about the Cacao plant.
Along the way, guests get to taste tropical fruits, local honey, and stop in the tasting room to try single-origin gourmet chocolates.
Embark on a Fishing Charter
One of the most unique Kauai tours on the island is embarking on a fishing charter. Tours typically are done in small groups and accommodate up to 6 guests. Fishing starts just 10 minutes out of the harbor.
Guests will learn different fishing methods, and additionally about the different baits and types of fish around the area. While the fisherman can’t guarantee to catch a fish, they certainly want to help you have an epic day out at sea.
Tour guides will move as many times as they need and lead you to the spot they think is best for catching fish.
Book a Premier Fishing Charter
Go on a Movie Adventure Tour
If you are a movie enthusiast, then consider a fun movie excursion around the island. Guests get to stand where famous actors once stood.

Takeaway: The Best Kauai Tours
As you can see, there are some epic Kauai Tours to partake in. We highly suggest a helicopter tour, as it was one of our favorite experiences on the island.
The Kalalau Trail is one of the best ways to experience the Napali Coast, but a helicopter tour is a close second. If you get the chance to do both, or even add in a boat tour, you will feel like you accomplished Kauai’s most sought-after landmark.
Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park are also two parks that should not be missed when visiting Kauai. You can either choose one of the guided Kauai Tours above or go on a self-guided tour to the best spots .
If you are still looking for the best places to stay in Kauai, we have an in-depth guide for the best Kauai budget hotels and Kauai camping options .
Hawaii is one of our favorite places to explore because of its endless hiking opportunities and epic landscapes. We highly suggest jumping on a plane or other method of island hopping to the different Hawaiian Islands .

What You’ll See & Do
Our wonderful Scenic Kauai Tour begins at Opaeka’a Falls, a 40-foot waterfall that cascades down a lush green cliff. We allow for lots of time to explore the picturesque Opaeka’a Falls so you can enjoy a relaxed exploration of the waterfall and have plenty of time to witness breathtaking views of the Wailua River Valley!
While en-route to our next stop of the day, Spouting Horn, we will drive through the Tree Tunnel, a canopy of towering Norfolk Island pines. This scenic drive is a great way to see the beauty of Kauai’s natural landscape, without getting out of the bus!
We’ll then arrive at our second stop of the day, Spouting Horn, a seafront geyser that shoots tall streams of water through the air! This natural wonder is a popular spot for visitors to watch the waves crash against the rocks and create a powerful spout of water.
The final stop of the tour is Poipu Beach, named “Best Beach in America” by the Travel Channel . Poipu Beach is ideal for swimming, snorkeling and wading, boogie-boarding and surfing and is family-friendly thanks to its calm, shallow and protected beach!
Good to Know
No food or drinks are included on this tour nor is bringing and eating your own food allowed while on the bus. Due to this we highly recommend all of our guests eat prior to going on the tour.
Drinking water is allowed but you must bring your own water.
It will come as no surprise to all that Hawaii is a sunny place, so we also highly encourage wearing sun protection, a sun hat as well as comfortable shoes to provide the most comfortable experience, sans the sunburn!

KAUAI’S ONLY WATER TUBING ADVENTURE ACTIVITY!
Witness Kauai’s spectacular, historic engineering feats as you float down the open canals and through five amazing tunnels and flumes engineered and hand-dug circa 1870!
This tubing adventure is perfect for people ages 5 and over and in generally good physical condition. The gently flowing waters, beautiful scenery, flumes, and tunnels create a relaxing, fun, and fascinating experience. And when we say we are unique, we mean it! This is the only tubing activity of this type on Kaua’i, and we are the only eco-tour company with access to these 17,000 acres of former plantation lands.
THE KAUA’I MOUNTAIN TUBING ADVENTURE IS A UNIQUE AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY!
Hop in one of our four-wheel-drive vehicles and traverse the former Lihue Plantation lands as we ride deep into Kauai’s pristine emerald green interior, where your exclusive tubing adventure begins! Start off by enjoying breathtaking vistas of Mt. Wai’ale’ale, deemed one of the wettest spots in the world and the second highest point on the island of Kaua’i. Witness her spectacular waterfalls before arriving at our launch site, where you will grab a tube, don a headlamp, and jump in the gently flowing waters. Float 2.5 miles of open canals and enjoy the wonder and magic of 5 tunnels illuminated by your headlamp. At the end of your adventure, you are guided to an enchanted picnic area for a delicious lunch and a cool dip in a natural swimming hole. There’s no better way to experience the Kaua’i mountains!
THE FASCINATING HISTORY
The historic Lihue Plantation ditch and tunnel system that once irrigated vast sugar crops had been unused since sugar was taken out of production in 2000. In January 2003, Kaua’i Backcountry opened a section for exclusive tubing tours. This water system runs through some of the most beautiful and remote lands on the island. It includes spectacular views of the ocean, coastline, mountains, and valleys. The waters that originate near the top of Mount Wai’ale’ale, one of the wettest spots in the world, are channeled through ditches and tunnels hand-dug by plantation workers over a century ago!
If you want to get off the beaten track, don’t miss this exclusive Kaua’i backcountry tubing tour. From start to finish, we take you on an amazing, fun-filled journey that you’re not likely to forget. Our customers tell us time and time again that our tours were the highlight of their vacation and often return for more of our tropical adventures.

- The island of Kauai is brimming with incredible valleys, waterfalls, reefs, and craters. Many of these sites can only be seen from the air which is why we strongly recommend taking a helicopter or airplane tour of Kauai. The doors off helicopter tours are our personal favorite but you really can't go wrong. For the budget traveler airplane tours are the cheapest air tour options in Kauai.
- Luau Fire Shows are the signature Hawaiian Island event. For the visitor, it's a fantastic night out loaded with entertainment, hula dancing, local foods and fire dancing. Kauai has several great options. Luau Kalamaku has the biggest production and best drinks. Smith's Luau has the beautiful garden setting. Aulii Luau has the oceanfront. The Ahi Lele Fire Show has the best flames and food.
Na Pali Tours
Kayak tours & rentals.
The most popular Kauai boat tours are the ones that visit the Na Pali coastline. There are no roads going alongside it so taking a Na Pali boat cruise is the best way to go. Our big catamarans will snorkel during the morning trips and sightsee only in the afternoons except during the summer months. Morning tours usually see wild dolphins and afternoon tours provide the best lighting and fishes with an epic sunset. We also offer a few river boat tours. One goes to world famous Fern Grotto and the other is a cocktail sightsee cruise.
- Kauai has many rivers that are fun to explore by kayak. The most popular is the paddle up the Wailua River. It includes access to a trailhead that leads to an epic waterfall. This can be done as guided kayak tour or by renting your own kayaks.
- Kauai offers four unique zipline tours that range from 1-8 individual ziplines. Each course offers serious speed and fantastic views. The hardest part is choosing to which one to do! All Zipline tours include guides who will handle the harness and braking. You just have to jump.
- There are three excellent ATV Tours in Kauai. All are guided tours that take you to along private backroads that are inaccessible to the public. You'll see movie locations, epic views all while experience the thrill of operating your own ATV! Your group will be in there personal ATV for the best experience.
Na Pali Raft
- Explore Sea Caves and snorkel the amazing coral reefs off of the Na Pali Coast. Our zodiac raft adventures take you down this incredible coastline that is a true adventure of a lifetime. You'll usually see dolphins in the morning. Sea Turtles are very common and you just might be able to snorkel with one at our spot. We also offer beach landings with a picnic lunch and private excursions.
- Kauai is loaded with all sorts of little niche watersports that we've set up in one category for you here. The tubing is by the far the most popular so call us right away if you want to book it. It's usually booked up well in advance. Kauai also offers Sportfishing, Scuba Diving, Surf and Stand Up Paddleboard Lessons, Waterfall Rappelling and more!

1 – Sail on the beautiful Na Pali coast
The Na Pali coast is known for its dazzling waterfalls, secluded beaches, and intriguing sea caves.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to know how to sail to enjoy the Na Pali coast — just sign up for a sailing tour that includes the captain.
Plenty of tourists even get an up-close and personal look at the marine life — none more entertaining than the turtles and dolphins.

2 – Explore the wilderness with a canyoning adventure!
Requiring nerves of steel, canyoning in Kauai is definitely for the more adventurous of you out there!
Take a hike through the thick rainforests and propel down waterfalls with a trusted tour guide and instructor, soaking in the peaceful surrounding and endemic wildlife along the way.
As a welcomed change from the tourist hot spots, canyoning is considered one of the best things to do in Kauai.
3 – Go snorkeling amongst colorful fish!
Get up close and personal with the marine life on the Kauai coast with an always-enjoyable snorkeling adventure.
Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned expert, snorkeling tour companies accept everyone. In fact, it can be a great day out for the whole family as the kids can join in as well.
Unravel a multitude of dazzling snorkel excursions and enjoy two hours, half a day or a full eight hours out at sea, navigating the waters onboard a catamaran, for example, and guided to the best snorkeling spots on the island.
Cruise along the Nā Pali Coast among jutting sea cliffs and look out for the humuhumunukunukuapua’a (Hawaii’s national fish), spot sea turtles at Hanalei Bay, or sail over to the “forbidden island”, Niihau, to see dolphins and in season, humpback whales.
There are snorkel adventures to choose from along the southern coast from where the fun begins at the reef closest to the shoreline, and no boat trip is required. Witness schools of tropical fish, sea urchins and rainbows of coral.
Other beaches to go snorkeling with easy access from the beach sands include Tunnels Beach (great for families with a shallow reef in front); Haena Beach Park on the North Shore; Lydgate Beach Park (with two protected lagoons) and Anini Beach.

4 – Go on a kayaking adventure on the Wailua River
Spend the day exploring and kayaking at the Wailua river and falls.
Most tours will include kayaking, swimming, and hiking, so make sure to bring a decent pair of outdoor shoes (no fresh kicks today, unfortunately).
Typically, to make life easier, lunch and drinks are provided as well.
Hot tip: ask your guide nicely and you may even get to venture into the Fern Grotto — a former space reserved only for royalty!
Alternatively, choose a stand-up paddleboarding adventure on the Wailua instead, and it’s a different workout altogether.

5 – Marvel at the 46-meter-tall Opaekaa Falls
Go chasing waterfalls, more specifically Opaekaa Falls and be treated to the Hawaiian jungle-esque scenes you’ve been dreaming of. Nicknamed ‘ Hidden Falls ‘, there are individual cascades next to one another that flow into the lush forestry and seem to disappear.
For the chance to marvel at the natural site, there are tours that bring travelers close enough to a designated viewpoint for photo-taking. However, if you’re set on seeing the waterfall up close, consider hiking to the natural attraction.
Take note: The only way to reach the once-secret fall is first to travel along the sacred Wailua River, and then venture off through the dense rainforest until you reach your destination.
While you’re in the area, stop by Kamokila Hawaiian Village . Step back in time and explore native settlements from hundreds of years back and enjoy authentic activities. Located on the river, you can rent canoes from here for a closer paddle time to reach the walking trail to the waterfall.
6 – Get a bird’s eye view of Kauai on an airplane tour
Marvel at the beauty that Kauai has to offer in a relaxing airplane tour. Kauai isn’t called the “island of paradise” for nothing, and in an airplane tour, you will understand exactly where that moniker was born.
Enjoy the breathtaking views of the crystal waters, seemingly endless greenery, and brilliant waterfalls as you glide through the air in style!
Flights range from one to 1.5 hours, depending on your route. From Kauai, veer over the Nā Pali Coast, the entirety of Kauai island or over to Pearl Harbor and Honolulu.

7 – Get face to face with turtles while scuba diving!
Are you ready to dive deep into the ocean and marvel at Kauai’s vibrant sea life?
With so many different tours available — including tours for those who have never been scuba diving before and also tours for certified divers — there’s a day out suitable for every level of experience.
Keep your eyes peeled — lucky divers often are greeted by the famous Hawaiian green sea turtles!

8 – Appreciate Mother Nature at the Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge
From the oceanic views to the birdwatching opportunities, the lonely Kilauea Lighthouse sits on the edge of a seaside cliff and is a fantastic photo opportunity.
Traveling to the North Shore, pass through Kilauea town — which is a fabulous stop on its own — and make your way to the iconic lighthouse that has been guiding sailors ever since 1913.
Reaching the parking lot, walk along a 200-meter-long boardwalk (wheelchair friendly too) until you reach the Daniel K. Inouye Kīlauea Point Lighthouse, as it’s officially known.
The surrounding area forms part of the Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (founded in 1985 to aid in the protection of seabirds and other wildlife’s natural habitat).
Bird enthusiasts; keep an eye open for the Laysan albatross, the red-footed booby with its shimmering beak, and the cute white-tailed tropicbird, among others, and you can enjoy whale-watching here from December to April.
9 – Ride the waves at one of the surf beaches!
Surf’s up, people! It’s common knowledge that Hawaii is THE place people go to make their dream of surfing a reality.
Luckily for travelers, there are many private and group lessons available when it comes to learning how to surf — so even if you’re not ready to tackle the monster waves, you can still hop on a board.
Ask the locals and they’ll advocate for Hanalei Bay: with consistent waves, beautiful views, and family-friendly facilities, it’s considered one of the best surf spots on the island.
- surf lessons in Kauai
10 – Swim like royalty at the Queen’s Bath
Despite what you might think, the Queen’s bath isn’t some sort of royal bathtub — rather it’s a very unique tide pool that not many people know about (which means smaller crowds)!
Dwarfing the common swimming pool in size substantially, the Queen’s Bath is, believe it or not, actually a giant sinkhole that is surrounded by rocks — still, tourists and locals can’t get enough.
Just make sure that you check the forecast for the day before you go swimming to ensure conditions are safe.
11 – Keep your eyes peeled for whales and dolphins!
There are no two ways about it: a whale and dolphin-watching activity is one of the best things to do in Kauai, Hawaii.
Take a tour, cruise around, and keep the camera at the ready for these gentle giants.
Most tours last around 3 hours (with refreshments included) and — since the guide narrates a lot of information about these marine mammals — also feature an educational element.
12 – Take an off-road adventure in an ATV
Not only can an off-road adventure in an ATV be packed full of adrenaline, but it will show you the rich history of the island as well.
With so many different places and terrains to visit (depending on which tour you choose), you could find yourself walking in the shoes of our favorite heroes from Jurassic Park or Indiana Jones!
Lasting roughly three hours, whizz over plantations and up to the top of an inactive crater, pass by Mahaulepu Beach and its cliffs and cruise further to the Waita Reservoir!
- quad tours in Kauai
13 – Treat yourself to Hawaiian Shave Ice
The most popular dessert in the tropical state is, without a doubt, Hawaiian shave ice — thanks, Japan.
How good does hibiscus-lime shave ice sound, topped with a drizzling of fresh mango purée? Head to Wishing Well (in Hanalei) and its funky old-school bus, which they’ve served out of since 1983!
Waikomo Shave Ice (in Poipu) dishes up all-natural shaven ice, straight out of a coconut!
With flavors like chai tea and cream, The Fresh Shave (in Koloa) has an artisanal vibe.
Expect sizely portions from Wailua Shave Ice (in Kapaa), winners of the best shave ice in Kauai. For classic rainbow cups, visit Jojo’s (in Hanalei), around since 1992.
14 – Explore the forbidden island of Niihau
Take a trip and uncover the great secrets, legends, and mysteries of the island of Niihau !
Besides the rich history of this hidden island, the area also boasts stunning waterfalls, underwater caves, and endless green terrain to get lost in.
The only way to get to privately owned Forbidden Island (its nickname) is with an organized tour, and the Robinson family won’t allow trespassers.
With tours usually lasting about six hours, most travelers opt to make a whole day out of it.
- Niihau boat tours
15 – Hunt down the caves
There’s something so intriguing about entering a cave … perhaps it’s our natural primitive instincts that come out to play? … Get to experience an abundance of different types of natural voids in Kauai and there are a few awe-inspiring enclaves to discover.
Located in the same area, both Waikanaloa Wet Cave and Waikapalae Wet Cave showcase turquoise blue waters and feel like you’re entering a scene from The Little Mermaid.
Called “wet caves” because they’re filled with water, the caves are refueled from underground springs. Swimming is prohibited.
Close by and just off the highway past mile marker nine, take a tour around the large Maniniholo Dry Cave which once acted as a secret tunnel.
There are myths and legends surrounding its origin or choose to believe the more logical explanation of its beginnings stringing it to the effects of natural erosion.
Admire the largest limestone cave in Hawaii at Makauwahi Cave Reserve . Set up as a living museum, investigate a preserved archaeological site containing fossils, and great conservation efforts have been made to sustain the natural environment here.
16 – Sample tasty treats on a food tour
A food tour is a perfect way to sample all the local delicacies that Kauai has to offer — go where the locals go and eat all the delicious food that the locals eat!
Most food tours, run by Kauai residents, not only show off the island’s best restaurants, bars, and cafes, but also provide a range of cultural and historical insights along the way.
There are private options, walking ventures for small groups, and tours that focus on a specific area, for example, Hanalei.
- food tours in Kauai
17 – Immerse yourself in Polynesian culture and go to a Luau show
A luau show is a perfect way to experience Polynesian cultures and traditions — hands-down, it’s one of the most exciting things to see in Kauai. Luau shows usually include hula dancers, traditional fire knife dancing, and plenty more.
Watch in awe and enjoy a buffet of drinks and local dishes — with incredible dance and entertainment, it’s an absolute must for travelers and tourists!
Heading into the Wailua River Valley, a night at fourth-generation Smith’s Family Garden Luau promises an evening laden with traditions. Putting on the authentic banquet show for more than 50 years, they truly honor ancient customs.
Become mesmerized by the Hawaiian hula dance, Tahitian drum dances and the Samoan fire knife dance whilst feasting on dishes usually reserved for the occasion, such as succulent roast pig and chicken adobo.
Swapping lush gardens for an open-air pavilion, Lu’au Kalamaku is another fabulous option for watching a Luau show in Kauai — located on a historic plantation in Lihue.
Dressed in full costume, learn the story of “Kalamaku” through song and dance, with a buffet filled with customary dishes. Up the experience a notch and book a luxurious four-course meal instead, with premier show seats included.
- Luau shows in Kauai
18 – Memorialize your vacation with a photo tour
Who’s ready to explore and discover the most gorgeous photogenic landscapes that Kauai has to offer?
A professional photographer will give you tips on how to take the best photos of these places (and take photos of YOU, of course).
If you don’t have a professional camera or any experience behind the lens, don’t fret; camera phones also work for this tour.
- photo tours in Kauai
19 – Take jealousy-evoking pictures at the Spouting Horn
A blowhole that finds itself on postcard after postcard, the Spouting Horn is easily one of the most photographed places in Kauai.
It can be quite a spectacular sight to see when the water comes through it and bursts into the air (at heights of up to 50 feet!), so don’t forget to stop and take a picture in front of it!
Located on the southern coast, it’s the perfect activity to combine with a trip to Old Koloa Town.
20 – From nature-inspired to food-centric options, join Walking Tours in Kauai
Forget the tour buses; for hands-on navigation through Kauai, consider walking tours led by a local!
There’s plenty to choose from, so you’re not limited to one type, from walking excursions through farms to those through gardens and plantations or a typical tour through its towns.
Become better acquainted with Hanalei and its residents, visiting hotspot eateries and shops.
Or, swap directions and amble around Allerton Garden and its rainforest on a guided walking expedition… The options are boundless.
- walking tour in Kauai
21 – Spend the day playing Golf
If you’re a fan of the fairway, this is for you.
There’s arguably no more relaxing day than an afternoon riding around in a golf cart on one of the island’s many golf courses; Some tourist favorites include the Hokuala golf course, Poipu Bay resort golf course, Puakea golf course, Kukuiolono golf course, and the Princeville Makai golf club.
Most of these courses have drinks and mouthwatering food available, but more importantly, offer stunning views of the ocean.
22 – Take a stroll in the National Tropical Botanical Garden
Expand your knowledge of the botanical heritage in the picturesque gardens on Kauai island with a visit to this vibrant, diverse garden !

Take note: If you’re planning on taking a tour of the Allerton Garden and the MacBryde Garden (which every visitor absolutely should), advanced bookings are required.
- National Tropical Botanical Garden tickets
23 – Enjoy picturesque views of the Waimea Canyon
Fun fact: at approximately ten miles long and up to 3,000 feet deep, the absolutely enormous Waimea Canyon holds the title of the second-largest canyon in the United States!
There are many different choices available — take your pick of airplane or helicopter flight, bus tours, and private tours; each option has its own benefits and offers its own breathtaking views of the canyon.
Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” it’s filled with viewpoints, waterfalls and amazing hikes through Waimea State Park.
- Waimea Canyon tours
24 – Hike 1800 feet over the ocean on the Kalalau Trail
For the ultimate view, take a scenic hike on the Kalalau trail all the way up to the Kalalau lookout.
This challenging hike is almost 11 miles long and treks through all sorts of terrain — the arguable highlight being a private beach!
Make sure to pack good hiking shoes for this trail! It is strenuous, however, according to the thousands of previous hikers, definitely worth it — as the views are absolutely stunning!
25 – Visit Na ‘Aina Kai Botanical Gardens & Sculpture Park
Kauai is a natural delight in itself, and greenery surrounds you tenfold. Get to learn more about the native plants and flora at the Na ‘Aina Kai Botanical Gardens & Sculpture Park .
What first started out as a personal project has extended far beyond that, and the now public garden is an extension of the owners’ love for the local land, island and culture.
Throughout the years, the gardens have been added onto, creating more space for guests to wander around. Mosey through the manicured Poinciana Maze, with hidden pockets and hedges of fruit trees.
Also located inside this Formal Garden is the Ka‘ula Lagoon, filled with koi and a Japanese teahouse on the water’s edge. Paying ode to the founder’s time spent in New Mexico, the International Desert Garden is home to desert fauna and flora.
Recreating an authentic Hawaiian village, take a gander around the miniature version displaying an ocean, native landscapes and homes. Another standout feature of the botanical gardens is its bronze sculpture collection.
Littered throughout the park, there are human, animal and fantasy renditions.
The Children’s Garden is open once a month on a Saturday.
26 – Taste the flavors of Hawaii at the Koloa Rum Company
Rum is the staple of most tropical cocktails, so why not go to the place where these flavors originated? That’s right, none other than the Koloa Rum Company !
A unique, fascinating distillery, Koloa offers tours of their brewery every hour, where visitors can taste a selection of different rums and sweet treats.
Remember to book in advance as there are only limited spots for each tour.
27 – Ride the train at the Kauai Plantation Railway
Looking for an experience that’s both educational and interactive? Look no further!
Learn about the history of Hawaii on this relaxing 40-minute train ride , during which the well-versed tour guides will talk about centuries gone by on the island and point out the important destinations that the train scoots past.
Camera at the ready — the train travels through orchids, farmlands, and forests, so there’s plenty of views to enjoy!
- Kauai Plantation Railway tours
28 – Saddle up for a horse riding adventure!
There are many places in Kauai offering scenic horseback riding tours.
What are you in the mood for? CJM Country Stables offers multiple riding adventures. If you’re here on honeymoon, there’s a three-hour Secret Beach Picnic Ride, or consider tailor-made 1.5-hour Private Rides.
The most popular horseback riding option here is the two-hour Scenic Beach and Valley Ride, combining the best of both worlds.
Family-run Princeville Ranch specializes in horseback riding lessons for all ages from their cattle ranch on the North Shore. Operational since 1831 (!!!), these are designed for both kids and adults.
29 – Eat (too much) chocolate as you stroll the Princeville Botanical Gardens
Chocolate and flowers are the ultimate romantic package and the Princeville Botanical Gardens has both these things in spades!
Most tours last about 3 hours, with friendly guides sharing information about all the plants in the garden.
If you’re feeling peckish there are plenty of local fruits to sample, as well, of course, as a chocolate tasting — all of which is made from local cacao trees.
- Princeville Botanical Gardens tickets
30 – Swim at the relaxing Poipu Beach Park
Spend a day in the sun and frolic in the crystal clear waters at Poipu beach park — easily one of the most beloved things to do in Kauai.
This beach is a hidden gem among the locals, and we all know what that means: almost no tourists!
It is also renowned as a spot where visitors are often greeted by turtles and seals, so make sure to charge the camera batteries!
31 – Be amazed by the art at the Kauai Museum
Art lovers, rejoice! Showcasing a mix of both indigenous and immigrant art (inspired by Hawaiian heritage), visitors are always enjoying the amazing exhibits at the Kauai Museum .
For those interested in history, a number of the displays also feature artifacts relating to the indigenous people of the area.
On those rainy days, it’s the perfect educational and fun place to spend the day, and arguably one of the most fascinating things to see in Kauai.
32 – Get lost on the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail
The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail offers many different kinds of attractions, so there is sure to be something for almost everyone!
Visitors can spend the day putting on the golf course (part of the trail veers through the course) , or hike along the beautiful trail.
The trail itself has plenty of paths that go down to the ocean, however, regardless of which path you take, make sure to check out the stunning Shipwreck Beach!
It’s approximately a six-kilometer trek, and with a lot of flat parts, takes about an hour and a half one-way.
33 – Feel transported at the Waioli Huiia Church (Wai’oli Hui’ia Church)
Dating back to the 19th century, stop by Waioli Huiia Church — now considered a historic city landmark and officially the oldest church on the island.
Arriving at the church feels like peeking into the past, and once you catch hold of the green exteriors, stained-glass windows, and remnants of American Gothic architecture, you can’t help but feel its allure.
Established by Christian missionaries in 1837, the original church is now called the Mission Hall, and in front of it sits the Wai`oli Church which was built in 1912, replacing the original as the main congregational building.
Apart from the design, check out original features, items and pieces of furniture once used by the founding families.
The new church was built with a belfry tower, and the old Mission Bell (given to the missionary in 1843 and previously housed in the original belfry behind the first church) was relocated here.
34 – Jurassic World to Pirates of the Caribbean, walk in the footsteps of your favorite actors with Movie Tours
Fun fact: For decades, movie producers and directors have favored the landscapes and terrains of Hawaii for filming, and around Kauai, there are plenty.
Cinephiles, you simply can’t miss out on a movie locations tour where you’re shown the exact sets used in dozens of iconic movies, from The Descendants to Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw to Soul Surfer to Tropic Thunder , and lest we forget about Jurassic Park .
Because there have been so many films and television series shot around Kauai, there’s loads to see and these tours usually last six to seven hours.

35 – Spend the day at Old Koloa Town
As one of the most underrated places to see in Kauai, Old Koloa Town is loved by tourists and locals alike.
Established in 1835 with the opening of the first sugar mill, it’s one of the most historical areas to investigate.
Boasting a plethora of different activities to do and landmarks to see, this quaint little town has plenty to offer: There are art galleries, jewelry stores, gift stores, clothing stores, restaurants, cafes, and so much more!
36 – Reel in a trophy fish!
Kauai is known for its abundant marine life, so it makes sense that it’s renowned around the world by fishing enthusiasts.
If it’s always been a dream of yours to catch a trophy fish, then you’ve come to the right place.
Jump on board the 45-foot yacht, enjoy the views along the way, and let the tour guides show you all of the most popular fishing spots in the area — and more importantly, how to reel in a catch!

37 – Kayaking, treks and swims, join Hidden Valley Falls tours for a true adventure
With a name like that, expect a whole bunch of magic, and these adventures on the Hule’ia River lead anticipating explorers to Hidden Valley Falls.
If you guessed the end prize was a waterfall, you would be 100% correct, but to reach the cascade requires a combination of kayaking, hiking and then canoeing.
It starts on the water in a kayak, disembarking in the jungle for a trek along a 1.2-kilometer forest trail leading to a swimming hole beneath a waterfall. Afterward, you’ll travel back on a traditional (motorized) twin-hulled Hawaiian canoe.

38 – Grab a hot cup of coffee at the Kauai Coffee Company
If you’re on the hunt for gifts for the family, the Kauai Coffee Company is a great place to pick up a souvenir before you leave this paradise island.
Spend the day on a tour around their orchard, learning all about how their beans are grown and made, before wrapping up the day with a nice cup of coffee at the estate.
Love the taste? There are plenty of take-home bags available for purchase.
39 – Soar over the island with a helicopter tour
If you want to get the best views of this remarkable island, then strap yourself in for a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter tour across the skies!
Most adventures last about 50 minutes, boasting highlights like the gorgeous Manawaiopuna falls (which you’ll see up close).
Movie buffs, rejoice; you’ll be pleased to know that the tour includes a visit to the one and only Jurassic Park set!
Extra special (and rather exciting), opt for a riveting “doors-off” flight (and it is exactly what it states).

40 – Hike the trails in Kokeʻe State Park
Nature lovers, this one’s for you; take in a breath of fresh air and gaze in awe of the scenic views at Koke’e State Park!
This beautiful slice of Mother Nature, which spans the northwest side of the island, has a wide selection of hiking trails — and if you’re not sure which to take, the friendly staff at the visitor lodge will point you in the right direction.
Feel like some time indoors? There is also a museum that is rich with history and artworks from the local people.
41 – Win a supersized Super Mario plushie at Fun Factory
When you need a reprieve from Hawaii’s beaming sun, head indoors to the Fun Factory !

Discover the classics, like claw crane machines, boxer glove, racing cars and air hockey tables, and you best bet there are tons of prizes to be won!
Collect your tickets (old-school style) and cash in for fun prizes, from gigantic soft toys to AirPods Pro.
42 – Foodies appreciate the Hanalei Farmers Market
With lands as lush as Kauai, the tropical produce that grows in these parts is amazing and a visit to Hanalei Farmers Market is a great way to sample these delights.
Comprising over 50 stalls when full capacity, spend your Saturday morning tasting the freshest mangoes, rambutans, carambola (commonly known as star fruit), papaya, dragon fruit, pineapples, and even the famously stinky durian.
Grab a fresh coconut drink and meander through the stalls set across a grassy park off Malolo Road in Hanalei.
Apart from the fruit, there are fresh veggies and other organic goods to buy, as well as vendors selling handmade products and handicrafts. Shop for art prints or boutique fashion items, woven baskets, shellac jewels, and more.
If you’ve arrived extra hungry there are plenty of stalls selling cooked and prepared meals and bites for on-the-go.
43 – Soak up the sunshine at Hanalei Bay
Stretching almost 2 miles, Hanalei Bay is the largest bay on the north shore of the island; chock-full of wildlife, pristine beaches, and beloved eateries.
Thanks to its diversity of attractions and soft, walkable sand, it’s become a popular spot among local surfers and tourists alike.
After riding the waves or perfecting the tan, there are plenty of shops and restaurants in the area to help transition afternoon into evening.
44 – Embrace the serenity at Kauai’s Hindu Temple
Surrounded by beautiful tropical gardens, the Kauai Hindu temple is a traditional south-Indian-style monastery, and one of the most serene, peaceful places on the entire island.
Despite housing more than two dozen monks, the temple remains open to tourists.
Kauai Aadheenam (its official name) opened in 1970, and the 382-acre grounds house two main temples: the Kadavul Temple and the San Marga Iraivan Temple.
If, after a few days of hiking or surging, you simply need to relax and get some peace and quiet, there’s no better place.
45 – Dig into a delicious (and nutritious) Hawaiian Poke Bowl
The Hawaiian poke bowl has rapidly become a favorite for foodies all over the world! But you haven’t *really* had a poke bowl until you’ve tried one here, in Kauai.
Creative recipes, the freshest ingredients and a sizable portion, what more could you ask for from Hanalei Poke?
Do yourselves a favor and order the fresh ahi poke from The Fish Express.
If you’re traveling between Poipu to Hanalei Bay, pop into Konohiki Seafoods — fuss-free but darn delicious poke!
Find the classics, and then some, down at Kōloa Fish Market — a great spot for takeaway.
Open daily (for lunch only), Kauai Poke Co is a classic.
46 – Navigate sea caverns and waterfalls when rafting in Kauai
First off, if you suffer from seasickness, we suggest saying next to rafting excursions, but for oceanic souls after a thrill out on the water, cruising around on an inflatable motorized raft is bucket loads of fun!
Obviously not as stable as a regular (boring) boat, here you really get to “ride” the waves (literally and figuratively speaking), zooming over barrels with spurts whipping your face from the sidelines!
Rafting expeditions favor the Na Pali Coastline, particularly Nu‘alolo Kai. You’ll break for swim and snorkel time, too, so wear appropriate gear — you will get wet regardless!

47 – Trek the Sleeping Giant trail
One of the most important things to take note of before you hike the Sleeping Giant trail is that there isn’t one, but two trailheads, separated as the Sleeping Giant East Trail and the Sleeping Giant West Trail .
Although the western trail is shorter in distance (roughly 2.7 kilometers), it’s considered a trickier hike than the east trail, with steeper inclines and more difficult terrain to conquer.
The eastern trek is longer, clocking in just under 5.5 kilometers of hiking, but not as strenuous as the western trailhead.
Walk through a forestry of pine trees bought over by the famous Captain Cook and be treated to views from the top along the Sleeping Giant West Trail, or spot wildlife and native plants during the Sleeping Giant East Trail, ending with coastline vistas.
Both trails are spectacular for a sunrise trek, but take caution after rainfall as the pathways become muddy.
48 – Grab a bite to eat at the local food trucks
It’s a sin to visit a new country and not test out the street food game; in Kauai, that’s found at the food trucks!
Combining two Hawaiian classics: musubi (spam) and sushi, The Musubi Truck is taking Kapaa by storm.
Also in Kapaa is Scorpacciata Kauai ; the best place for Neapolitan Pizzas.
Down in Hanalei, tuck into deep-fried taro treats from Holey Grail Donuts or hit up Fresh Bite Kauai for all things vegan. In Koloa? Creative, imaginative and fun (the basis for any fantastic food truck), try the foie gras ice cream from Kickshaws and grab a refuel from Eden Coffee.
49 – Go off the beaten track on a tubing adventure
A surefire hit for the entire family, tubing is an adrenaline rush (in a calm sort of way) that lets you see parts of Kauai that you might not otherwise get the chance.
As you travel along the slow-moving waters, deep into the mountains and greenery, take a second to appreciate the untouched slice of nature engulfing you — the scenery is, without a doubt, one of the most incredible things to see in Kauai.
Tubing tours are open to everyone, including kids. Kauai Backcountry adventures can make your trip one to remember!
50 – Feel like a contestant on The Amazing Race with Scavenger Games in Kauai
Are you traveling with little ones? Scavenger games are an exciting way to go sightseeing and double as a top activity among the family-friendly things to do in Kauai.
Think of it as a cross between The Amazing Race (because you’ll need to run around from one landmark to the next to complete the game) and an escape room (using brains to crack clues and solve riddles).
Powered by a Whatsapp guide leading the way, you’ll need a mobile and your A-game. There are scavenger games around Hanalei or Hanapepe, for example.

Even complete amateurs can have an unforgettable time at Pheasant Hollow Farms .
There are courses set up for beginners and experienced shooters, with a conscious dedication to safety.

20 Best Things to Do in Kauai, Hawaii
The Garden Island offers an endless number of fun things to do, whether you're looking to hike, kayak, swim or relax on the beach. By and far the most popular attraction on the island is the one-of-a-kind Napali Coast , which can be seen on foot
- All Things To Do
Napali Coast Napali Coast
U.S. News Insider Tip: For a low-effort wow moment, drive past Waimea Canyon in Koke'e State Park and stop at the Kalalau Lookout for a glimpse of the glorious Napali Coast and Kalalau Valley some 4,000 feet below. – Jill Schildhouse
The Napali Coast is a 17-mile expanse of rocky, steep and oh-so-gorgeous cliffs that stretch along Kaua'i's North Shore. Travelers agree there's no better way to experience Kaua'i's natural beauty and eye-catching terrain than at Napali, so you should make plans to marvel at it – either on foot, from the water or from the air (there are no roads that go along the Napali Coast).
Waimea Canyon and Koke'e State Park Waimea Canyon and Koke'e State Park
U.S. News Insider Tip: Arrive early to get a parking spot, or between 11 a.m. and noon (after the early birds have finished their hikes). Then, refuel at the delicious nearby taco spot, Island Taco. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor
Waimea Canyon, aptly nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," should be at the top of every traveler's itinerary. This massive gorge – which measures 14 miles across, a mile wide and 3,600 feet deep – is awash with spectacular scenery difficult to find elsewhere on the Hawaiian Islands. Here, you'll see craggy red cliffsides and crested buttes blanketed in lush, evergreen vegetation as far as the eye can see, with waterfalls dotted in between. Many travelers who visit Waimea Canyon choose to take in the sight by car, as there are multiple lookout points situated along Koke'e Road, including the popular Waimea Canyon and Puu Hinahina lookout points.
Po'ipu Beach Park Po'ipu Beach Park free
U.S. News Insider Tip: It's common to see Hawaiian monk seals sleeping and sunning themselves in the sand; do not be alarmed, they are perfectly OK. Be sure to stay 100 feet away from these endangered creatures (you can still get some great photos). – Jill Schildhouse
Po'ipu Beach Park is popular with both residents of and visitors to Kaua'i. This small shoreline situated on the south side appeals to many types of beachgoers thanks to its golden sands, calm waters and convenient location in the heart of the Po'ipu resort area. Here, sun seekers can easily kick back, relax and lay out for hours in between the palm trees while those with children needn't worry about big waves interrupting a family swim. Those looking for a little more adventure can enjoy bodyboarding (the beach features small waves) and snorkeling.

Princeville Botanical Gardens Princeville Botanical Gardens
Princeville Botanical Gardens began as a passion project of Bill and Lucinda Robertson, who have been cultivating former cattle land and reintroducing native flora since 2004. In 2010, they opened their gardens to the public for small private tours. This attraction on the island's North Shore contains hundreds of plants including a diverse array of rare and endangered flowers, fruit trees and plants with medicinal properties. It has both native plants and flora from around the world. The gardens also produce honey from its on-site beehives as well as organic chocolate.
The variety of plants consistently impresses visitors, who typically call the gardens very beautiful and the tour educational and entertaining. Guides win high marks for their professionalism and insight. And the food samples offered along the way are heartily appreciated.
Hike the Kalalau Trail Hike the Kalalau Trail
Many people come to Kaua'i with high hopes of backpacking the 22-mile round-trip Kalalau Trail. This trail is so popular because it is the only land-based option to explore the world-famous Napali Coast . No roads or paved streets go along, in or through this famous coastline.
The hike takes travelers through five valleys in Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, passing through lush tropical forests, bubbling streams, cascading waterfalls and dramatic cliffside ocean views. What's more, the hike ends at the remote Kalalau Beach. But access to this unworldly scenery comes with a price. Novice hikers, expert expeditioners, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and state officials all say the same: This hike is a lot of work and shouldn't be attempted without the proper equipment and, most importantly, experience. The trail is filled with elevation and terrain changes throughout. Trails are not wide and open, but rather narrow, rocky and very muddy. And once you hit Crawler's Ledge around mile 7, the dirt path starts to disappear and the rock climbing – or rather clinging – begins.
Wailua River State Park Wailua River State Park free
U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're lucky enough to visit Wailua Falls when locals are selling homemade banana bread out of the back of their trucks, be sure to have cash on hand to buy a loaf – it's the most delicious bread you've ever tasted. – Jill Schildhouse
If you want to experience Kaua'i's majestic rainforests without breaking too much of a sweat, then you'll want to add Wailua River State Park to your itinerary. This park on the eastern coast of the island is home to the only navigable river in Hawaii, allowing visitors to get an eyeful of the lush valley on a boat tour .
Hanalei Bay Hanalei Bay free
U.S. News Insider Tip: Snapping a photo on Hanalei Pier is sure to yield a gorgeous shot, but standing under the pier when the tide is low makes for a really cool architectural image with an unexpected vantage point. – Jill Schildhouse
Hanalei Bay is located 4 miles southwest of Princeville, one of the island's premier resort areas, on Kaua'i's North Shore. Hanalei Bay is composed of three different beaches: Wai'oli Beach Park, Hanalei Beach Park and Black Pot Beach, the latter of which is sandwiched between the historic Hanalei Pier and the mouth of the Hanalei River. Lifeguards can be found at multiple points along the beach and bathroom facilities are also on-site. Keep in mind that there will be signs along the beach indicating water conditions and if it is safe to swim. If you're ever unsure, talk with a lifeguard.
Snorkel at Tunnels Beach Snorkel at Tunnels Beach free
If you're looking for a place to snorkel in Kaua'i, head to Tunnels Beach (aka Makua Beach). Tunnels Beach is located on Ha'ena Point on Kaua'i's North Shore near Wainiha, about 2 miles east of the Kalalau Trail and 9 miles west of Princeville.
The beach offers an expansive reef that is suitable for both novice and experienced snorkelers. Its name refers to the lava tubes, or tunnels, that run through the reef. Travelers can expect to see batches of coral, small sea caves and tunnels as well as wildlife, which could include turtles, plenty of tropical fish, eels, crabs and more. If you're not up for snorkeling, visitors say this beach is still worth a trip for its fantastic location. Here, the water is clear, palm trees abound and if you look toward the west, you can admire the cluster of lush, jagged peaks that flank the beach.

South Shore South Shore
U.S. News Insider Tip: Even when it's raining elsewhere on the island, the beaches around the Poipu area are often sunny and dry. If soggy weather ruins your plans on the north, west or east sides of Kaua'i, head south for near-perfect conditions. – Jill Schildhouse
The moment you drive through the iconic mile-long tunnel of eucalyptus trees on Maluhia Road, you know you've arrived on the beautiful South Shore of Kaua'i. There's plenty to see and do here — this is where you'll find Poipu Beach Park and Old Koloa Town , which could easily take up a full day for anyone who wants some quality beach time, followed by a meal and shopping.
Kalapaki Beach Kalapaki Beach free
Despite its close proximity to the airport, cruise port and multiple hotels, travelers maintain Kalapaki Beach is a relaxing spot. The beach is located on the west side of the island in Lihue, an area known for gentle swimming conditions and easy access to amenities. Kalapaki is an especially swimmer-friendly shoreline because of the nearby Nawiliwili Bay, which features a jetty and breakwater that slow big waves. As such, this won't be the most exciting surf spot, but rather the perfect place for a relaxing dip or an afternoon of paddleboarding. And thanks to its location right in back of the popular Marriott's Kaua'i Beach Club , travelers are steps away from eateries, shops on Rice Street and water sport rentals.
While recent visitors do agree that Kalapaki is perfect for a soothing afternoon under the sun, some said that when cruise ships are in port, the beach does experience more visitors. And although this beach is backed by a Marriott property, it does not have lifeguards, so be mindful of conditions and don't swim at night. There are no set hours for Kalapaki Beach and it is free to visit, even if you aren't a Marriott guest. For more information on Kalapaki Beach, visit the Hawaii Tourist Authority's website .
Ke'e Beach Ke'e Beach
Ke'e Beach (pronounced Keh-AY), which is located within Ha'ena State Park, is conveniently situated at the Kalalau trailhead, offering beachgoers sweeping views of the Napali cliffs from the comfort of the sand. Plus, there are lifeguards posted here and, depending on the time of year, it is safe to swim and snorkel, so long as you keep close to the shore. The beach also offers restrooms and showers, though due to its close proximity to the cliffs, there is no cell phone service.
Because of its stunning location on the island's North Shore, recent visitors couldn't help but fall in love with Ke'e Beach. Located at the start of the Kalalau Trail, this beach has been known to see considerable traffic. In response, the park has imposed daily visitor limits and requires advance reservations for entry.
Ha'ena Beach Park Ha'ena Beach Park free
When the conditions are calm during the summer, the North Shore's Ha'ena Beach Park is a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling – let the turquoise waters lure you right in. This beach is located on one side of the crescent-shaped Maniniholo Bay, and the other side is the popular Tunnels Beach . Those who prefer to lounge on the white sand beach will find myriad shells to examine and enjoy (remember to leave them where you found them instead of collecting them to take home, which can negatively impact the delicate ecosystem). However, take caution during the winter months; you will no doubt see experienced surfers riding the gigantic waves, but the surf and currents here can be quite dangerous for swimmers. Recent visitors note that the entire beach is taped off and the lifeguard station is closed when the waves are too intense, so be sure to mind those warnings.
You can access Ha'ena Beach Park off of Highway 560 at mile marker 9. Not to be confused with Ha'ena State Park (home of Ke'e Beach and the trailhead for the Kalalau Trail ), Ha'ena Beach Park does not require advance parking reservations or an entry fee. However, recent visitors cautioned that parking is limited and that you'll need to arrive before 10 a.m. to score a spot.
Allerton Garden Allerton Garden
Situated on Kaua'i's South Shore and 3 miles west of Poipu Beach , Allerton Garden encompasses bamboo groves, rainforest trees, fruit trees and other tropical plants, a flower garden and more. The garden also has vine-covered cliffs overlooking the ocean and a stream lined with fig trees. You may recognize parts of the garden from their appearances in movies like "Jurassic Park."
The lush garden doesn't fail to impress plant lovers. Visitors frequently laud the tour guides for their extensive knowledge about the garden's collection. Reviewers suggest wearing mosquito repellent and closed-toe shoes as parts of the garden can get quite muddy.

Anini Beach Anini Beach free
East of Princeville on Kaua'i's North Shore, Anini Beach features miles of white sand and a large coral reef. Due to its consistently calm waters, the beach is widely regarded by visitors as a great place to visit with children, despite the absence of lifeguards. (You may run into strong currents beyond the reef.) Because of these conditions, the beach is a destination for fans of water activities like paddleboarding and windsurfing. Its tranquil lagoon also makes it an ideal spot for novice snorkelers.
Beachgoers regularly describe Anini Beach as a wonderful place for swimming, snorkeling or just relaxing. Many recommend it for those traveling with children.
Old Koloa Town Old Koloa Town free
Located on Kaua'i's South Shore, near Poipu Beach , the picturesque Old Koloa Town is the original sugar plantation-era shopping village in the town of Koloa. This home of Hawaii's first successful sugar mill was established in 1835, and each of the brightly colored buildings has a history worth noting. For instance, The Tao Building was first used as an ice cream parlor, serving the plantation workers. The Chang Fook Building was built in the 1920s and operated as a general store before becoming known for its baked goods. And the Koloa Hotel was used as lodging for the traveling salesmen who worked for large mercantile agencies on O'ahu .
Today, these buildings are filled with a wide variety of charming shops and restaurants. A stroll through this complex introduces visitors to storefronts filled with surf attire and beachwear, souvenir T-shirts and gifts, handcrafted goods and fine art galleries. Grab a shave ice at The Fresh Shave for a quick cooldown or a bite to eat at Kenji Burger, Koloa Pizza Kitchen + Bar or Leahi Vegan Eats.
Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and the Kilauea Lighthouse Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and the Kilauea Lighthouse
The 203-acre Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge sits atop a 180-foot ocean bluff on the island's North Shore. In addition to ocean views, you may spot seabirds rarely seen from land, such as the Hawaiian state bird (the nene, or Hawaiian goose) as well as Laysan albatross (moli) and the red-footed booby. From December to May, you might also be able to see humpback whales cavorting in the water nearby. One of Kaua'i's top attractions, the 52-foot Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse, sits within the refuge.
Visitors consistently say this area offers unrivaled scenic views. Some recommend bringing binoculars to make the most of the ample bird-watching opportunities (though you can also use binoculars provided by the refuge). In addition to the helpful park rangers, reviewers also praised the signage posted throughout the refuge, which identifies the various bird species that can be found here. Welcome to the art capital of Kaua'i, Hanapepe Town. Located on the southwest side of the island between Koloa and Waimea, this area has a rich history. Dubbed "Kaua'i's Biggest Little Town," it once brimmed with enlisted servicemen and sailors stationed here from World War I to the early 1950s. The historic buildings, which served as inspiration for the Disney film "Lilo and Stitch," house shops, eateries and more art galleries than anywhere else on the island.
There are a wide variety of artisans in Hanapepe, with designs and mediums to suit any taste or style. For instance, Kalakoa Kaua'i Fine Art Gallery features local artists who have mastered light, color and motion. Banana Patch Studio showcases hand-painted ceramic tiles and pottery. And Pu'uwai Gallery & Boutique sells locally crafted jewelry, art and clothing. Beyond the shops, the area also serves up a bevy of local eateries, including favorites like Midnight Bear Breads bakery, Longies Shave Ice and Treats and Kauai Kookie, which was founded in 1965.
Kauai Plantation Railway at Kilohana Kauai Plantation Railway at Kilohana
Once home to 22,000 acres of sugarcane, this historic plantation in Lihue now spans 105 acres and offers visitors a glimpse at Hawaii's sugarcane history, which dates to the 1860s. Visitors ride mahogany-lined passenger train cars along the property's 2 ½ miles of railroad tracks, where bananas, mangos, papayas, pineapples, sugarcane, taro and other essential Hawaiian crops grow. Along the 40-minute ride, conductors provide narration regarding the various sights, which include animals like goats, pigs and sheep that you'll be able to feed during a stop.
Trip-takers generally describe this excursion as both fun and informative. They also say it's enjoyable for travelers of all ages. Interacting with the animals is frequently cited as a high point, as is the food included in the lunch tour.

Luau Kalamaku Luau Kalamaku
While there are several luau options on Kaua'i, Luau Kalamaku at the historic Kilohana Plantation is known for its authentic experience in an open-air pavilion. Arrive early to peruse the more than 100-acre plantation and explore the open-air artisan market for handcrafted souvenirs held exclusively for guests. Be sure to listen for the blowing of the conch shell at 6:15 p.m., which signals the beginning of the ceremony.
At 6:30 p.m., attendees will dine on a buffet of dishes made from fresh local ingredients, including seasonal fruit, green salad, poi (taro root), teriyaki chicken, vegetable chow mein, sautéed vegetables, seasonal fish and the famous Kalua pork – this whole roasted pig is cooked in an underground oven called an imu , and wrapped in banana leaves. Leave room for the banana cream tart, pineapple upside down cake and coconut pudding for dessert.
Fern Grotto Fern Grotto
As its name suggests, Kaua'i's Fern Grotto is a natural lava rock grotto covered in hanging ferns and tropical foliage. This special place was once the birthplace of the island's ali'i , or royalty, but it's now a popular locale for wedding ceremonies. The only way to get to this magical location, which sits on the south fork of the Wailua River on the eastern side of the island, is by boat.
The Smith's Kaua'i Fern Grotto tour begins with a leisurely, 2-mile open-air cruise along the river, during which you'll hear songs and stories of ancient Hawaii and be treated to a hula lesson with beautiful scenery. Upon arrival, you'll take a short nature walk through the rainforest full of native Hawaiian plants and around a serene space where the guides share history and culture all the way to the Fern Grotto. There's a waterfall along the way, providing a cooling mist. The acoustics here are so incredible that local musicians and entertainers are known to greet visitors with Hawaiian music.

Frequently Asked Questions
Please reach out if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Yes, each board has a maximum weight capacity for safety reasons. Typically one adult per board. Kids can often ride with an adult - the SCUBAJET motors make it fun and enjoyable too.
For paddleboarding, this makes everything easier. You can sit, kneel or stand and power yourself along easily. Steering is an easy thing to pick up on with a paddle, dragging a foot or even a lean.
For snorkeling, this is best suited for people who are comfortable snorkeling, They should know how to dive, surface, clear their tube and dive again. Another way to use the motors for the lesser experienced is to use a body board or surf board to layout on and hold the motor beneath the board to motor around on.
We rent to adults only, however the boards and motors can be operated by anyone over 14 with an adult along on their journey

Wailua River is by far the most popular, but Kalihiwai and Hanalei rivers are also great options our team can help set you up with.
We recommend allowing 30 minutes for each direction. This is a modest combination of paddle assisted motorized motion. River current, winds and tide changes can affect these. By comparision, a two person kayak <with both paddling> is often a 90 minute trip each way.
Check out our Wailua River Day link below in the footer
Yes, we offer discounts from time to time based on seasonal demands. You may also get a referal code from wherever you find our advertising info or a local concierge.
Check with your boat operator, but YES, we provide everything you need for your snorkeling adventures. A case for the motor, fully charged batteries, and controller to make the most of your day.
The battery range can vary by several factors, wind, current, weight, speeds, etc., but our full length batteries for the paddleboards will last typically 4 hours at modest pace of usage. The shorter length ones for snorkeling, last approx two hours. This is time of actual usage, under power at 50% or more. Typical usage on either is more likely to be around 20-30% power speed. The controller shows you the level of charge at all times.

- - Consider renting a car. The downside to Kauai's untouched natural condition is limited transportation options. Having your own vehicle on hand will expand your options enormously, and make it easier to get around with younger children.
- - Dress appropriately. Although Kauai is safe to explore, you should at least bring a pair of sneakers that can get a bit dirty.

Really great tour, incredible views and a wonderful captain and crew..
The Na Pali coast tour was amazing, the views were incredible and the captain and crew were extremely helpful, knowledgeable and skilled in maneuvering the boat into sea caves and along the coast. We went with the fa ... more mily, including two kids (5 &7 yo) and everyone loved the tour. The snorkeling was also a highlight and the crew had all the gear to make it safe and fun. Our lunch was also very yummy! And as a bonus we saw some dolphins that jumped and flipped out of the water for us, and also a sea turtle. We could not think of anything that could have been better.
extraordinaire!!
We had so much fun!! Our guides were so informative and took their time in explaining and waiting for everyone in our party to climb the ropes to experience the fabulous waterfall!! It was breathtaking!!
River Cruise - Fantastic
This cruise was great with our 18 month old. The boats are wide and spacious and have great visibility on any seat. We enjoyed the commentary and singing while we rode -- and barely noticed the rain. The short walk t ... more o the fern grotto was lovely and lush. Not to mention the grotto itself. We learned more about the traditions of the place and watch a Hula performance of a love song. The guides did not rush us through the walk and were very warm and friendly. Recommend -- especially if you have young children and need something fun to do with them. My son loved the boat ride!
River cruise to fern grotto
Good performance given sever flooding one day before cruise.
Super fun activity
Really fun activity- my whole family loved it. Highly recommend.
Amazing experience
We had the best day!!! From the beautiful weather, the calm kayak conditions, the lush hiking environment, the spectacular falls and our amazing guide Justice, we could not have had a better experience. Justice was incre ... more dibly friendly, super knowledgeable, funny (dad jokes lol), patient and an overall great guide who thoroughly enjoys what he does. As novice kayakers, we had no issues but the river was very calm with very little wind. As intermediate hikers we found the trail fairly easy to navigate as long as we were mindful on the rocks and roots. On the hike, you WILL get muddy and you WILL get wet crossing 4 streams and 1 river but it’s all worth it once you reach the breathtaking falls. The lunch supplied by the tour was pretty good too as we picnicked at the falls. Hiking shoes/sandals or running shoes are best. For anyone with mobility issues, they may find parts of the hike difficult. We would highly recommend this tour as it was the highlight of our time on Kauai!!

Lawmakers set to tackle ‘funflation’ as Taylor Swift tour puts spotlight on growing entertainment costs
(CNN) - Taylor Swift’s latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” which dropped on Friday, became the most-streamed album on its first day across Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music.
The superstar continues to break record after record. Last summer’s “Eras” tour was the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. Swift’s live success, along with Beyonce’s blockbuster tour, jolted the entire U.S. economy, but fans willing to shell out big bucks to be a part of the magic were plagued by ticketing troubles and inflation.
“This is a significant amount of spending that people are still funneling towards entertainment and concerts,” said Elizabeth Renter, data analyst for NerdWallet.
The phenomenon of “funflation” is raising red flags in Washington.
The U.S. Justice Department is planning to sue Live Nation & Entertainment, the country’s largest concert promoter and parent company of Ticketmaster, for breaking America’s antitrust laws, according to reporting from the Wall Street Journal that cited anonymous sources familiar with the DOJ’s plans.
“It’s impossible for a consumer to tell what’s going into these ticket prices,” said Kase Wickman, Vanity Fair contributor. “It’s really frustrating on the consumer side and also feels unfair.”
For its part, Ticketmaster has defended its practices, arguing before Congress last year that it doesn’t set ticket prices or determine how many seats go up for sale.
“Pricing and distribution strategies are determined by the artists and their teams. Service fees, even if they’re called ticketing fees, are retained mainly by the venues,” said Joe Berchtold, president and CFO of Live Nation & Entertainment.
Yet, despite consumer anger over exorbitant fees when buying online, the concert-going craze isn’t over.
“People have rethought how they prioritize what they spend their money on and that we’re going to see continued spending on experiences rather than just stuff,” Renter said.
