‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Announces 133-Date ‘Ill-Advised Vanity Tour’ For 2022

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

“Weird Al” Yankovic is returning to the road next year for an encore run of his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour  that he’s calling The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour. It will once against focus on his lesser-known album tracks and skip over nearly all of his famous parody songs.

It kicks off April 23rd, 2022 and wraps up October 29th with Yankovic’s first-ever show at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Along the way, he’s playing an incredible 133 shows.

“I’ve loved doing every single incarnation of my live show, but honestly the Vanity tour is the most fun I’ve ever had on stage,” Yankovic said in a statement, “so I’ve been dying to get back out there and torture everybody with it once again!”

The first incarnation of the Vanity tour took place in 2018. Unlike every Yankovic tour of the past, it was staged without costume changes, video screens, or famous parody songs like “Fat,” “Eat It,” and “Smells Like Nirvana” with the exception of a short medley at the end of the night and a grand finale of “Yoda.”

Instead, he played fan favorites like “Nature Trail to Hell,” “Jackson Park Express,” “Dog Seat Dog,” You Don’t Love Me Anymore,” and “Albuquerque.” Every night featured a different cover song in the encore like “Cinnamon Girl,” “Blister in the Sun,” “Fire and Rain,” and “Girl U Want.”

In 2017, Yankovic told Rolling Stone that he got the idea near the end of one of his regular concert tours. “I think I was in the middle of putting on my ‘Fat’ suit for the thousandth time and getting ready to go back onstage,” he said. “I was thinking, ‘Gosh, next time I go on tour I don’t know if I want to be doing this. I think I need to take a break from all the theatrics. Wouldn’t it be nice to just do a really scaled down, low-key, casual show for the hardcore fans and just go out and be musicians?'”

Just like in 2017, comedian Emo Phillips will serve as an opening act on the tour. “He’s one of my oldest friends, and I also happen to think he’s one of the funniest guys in the world,” Yankovic told Rolling Stone in 2017. “I know that my fans love Emo from his appearance in UHF and also because he’s Emo. He’s an icon.”

“Weird Al” Yankovich (born October 23, 1959) is a singer, songwriter, musician and foremost contributor to musical parody since Allan Sherman, hailing from Lynwood, California, U.S.

Yankovich’s earliest musical excursion came aged seven when he began playing the accordion in the wake of un-related polka star Frank Yankovich. Inspired by the comedic, musical delivery of the likes of Dr. Demento, Allan Sherman, Spike Jones, and Tom Lehrer, Yankovich gave a demo of his to Dr. Demento aged just 13. Three years later the musician made his radio debut on the Dr. Demento show with the single “Belvedere Cruising”, and found favour with the show’s fan base.

In 1979 after graduating from high school and enrolling at California Polytechnic State University to study architecture, Yankovich adopted the nickname “Weird Al”, and crafted the parodic track “My Bologna” inspired my the Knack’s hit single “My Sharona”. The Knack were so impressed by the satirical take of their song, they asked their label Capitol to issue it as a single, introducing “Weird Al” to a much wider audience. A year later after graduating from university, Yankovich released the song “Another One Rides the Bus” in a comedic remake of the famous Queen song “Another One Bites the Dust”. The song became an underground hit and led to the song “I Love Rocky Road”, a take on Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ hit “I Love Rock ’n Roll”.

Yankovich signed to Scotti Brothers in 1983, who issued the parodic musician’s debut album ““Weird Al” Yankovich” featuring the single “Ricky”, which became a staple on the growing MTV network. Yankovich’s use of the music video medium, unlike the likes of Spike Jones and Allan Sherman, allowed the musician an extra means of satire-infused communication. The parodist soon became known for his Hawaiian shirts, frizzy hair and goofy persona, later mocking the Michael Jackson video “Beat It” scene-for-scene in his Grammy-award winning remake “Eat It”.

Yankovich went on to release the parodies “King of Suede”, “I Lost on Jeopardy”, and “Polkas on 45”, before releasing the full-length “Dare to Be Stupid” in 1986. The album went gold like its predecessor, was the first comedy album to be released on compact disc, and featured the single “Like a Surgeon” – a take on Madonna’s “Like a Virgin”. The musician’s subsequent album “Polka Party!” failed to achieve success unlike its platinum-selling successor “Even Worse” in 1988. The album which is in large part a satirical take on Michael Jackson’s hit “Bad”, saw Yankovich portrayed as a overweight tough guy and earned the parodist his second Grammy Award.

Yankovich kept a low profile for a number of years before returning in 1992 with the album “Off the Deep End”, which notably features the single “Smells Like Nirvana”. 1996 brought the subsequent album “Bad Hair Day” which spawned the singer’s most popular release to date, the single “Amish Paradise” in response to Coolio’s hit single “Gangsta’s Paradise”. The musician went on to release a string of albums into the new millennium including “Running with Scissors” in 1999, “Poodle Hat” in 2003, “Straight Outta Lynwood” in 2006, and “Alpocalypse” in 2011. Yankovich’s 14th studio album “Mandatory Fun” was promoted with eight video prior to its release and became the first comedy album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2014.

Live reviews

There is no one quite as hilarious to see live as Weird Al Yancovic. He will be sure to keep you rolling on the floor with laughter with his parody songs and crazy theatrical stage antics. Weird Al is a fun performer for all generations to see. He will keep the older audiences laughing with his renditions of Michael Jackson parodies such as “Fat” and “Eat It”, and he will keep the younger generations entertained with his side splitting hilarious parody of Pharrell Williams’ song, “Happy”, which is titled “Tacky”. Even though Weird Al recycles the same kind of formula in his parodies, his music is always relevant due to his keen observations on current pop culture, and the wacky absurdities of his songs, no matter how nonsensical they might be, can only make one laugh. His newer albums even contain songs that make references to older styles of music that will please his fans that don’t keep up with recent pop radio. His newest album contains a song in the musical style of the Pixies, and his previous album had a song in the musical style of The Doors labeled “Craigslist”.

During his performances Weird Al is known to play on his accordion, an instrument that he is quite talented at playing. His accordion is heavily featured on various songs including “Angry White Boy Polka”, which is a song consisting of a medley of different parodies. He has also been known to perform on other outlandish instruments such as a keytar, when playing parodies of 80’s music. Weird Al always dresses appropriately and obnoxiously for each song he is parodying. When performing the song “Fat” you will see him perform the song in a fat suit, and in the song “White and Nerdy” you will see him dressed in nerdy, gangster attire.

Weird Al is sure to perform his old and new material that will please all of his fans, and every word that comes out of his mouth is ensured to be presented in a way that will keep the audience laughing out of their seats.

Humourist "Weird Al" Yankovic is a musician it is hard to grow tired of. His silliness doesn't get too overbearing, because it's always well-crafted, intelligently detailed and… well, funny.

"Weird Al" is a legitimately great comedian, so it's no surprise that he's been popular since the eighties, and, as a man in his fifties, still manages to get a buzz going among 20-somethings with his new project.

That project constitutes Weird Al releasing a brand new parody music video every day for eight days, with star-studded videos that satirise your least detested pop songs. Pharrell's "Happy" becomes "Tacky" in Weird Al's hands. Lorde's "Royals" becomes "Foil", an ode to aluminium.

It might be Weird Al's irreverence that makes him such an appealing comedian, and gives his oddness a certain coolness. Kurt Cobain adored Weird Al's parody video 'Smells like Nirvana', and his other fans include rock and roll royalty Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) and even the late King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Songwriter Don McLean loved Yankovic's rewriting of his classic song 'American Pie' into 'The Saga Begins', an epic 1st. person account of Obi Wan Kenobi's experience with a young Darth Vader, as seen in the movie 'The Phantom Menace'. What really makes this parody song great is that it matches the complicated rhythm and rhyming scheme of McClean's original, line for line. With an artist as clever as Yankovic, you can be in no doubt that the live show is an awesome experience, or in Yankovic's own words, "a rock and comedy multimedia extravaganza." Expect production values, costume changes, video screens and general mayhem. The show is full of clever touches, like Al's ever changing T shirt slogan, as he strips off gradually to a performance of the James Blunt inspired 'You're Pitiful'. I'm in no position to guarantee that you'll have a great time, but I guarantee, go to a Weird Al show and you'll have a great time.

As I write this review, comedy legend ‘Weird’ Al Yankovic has finally, at the fourteenth time of asking, achieved a number one record in the U.S., with Mandatory Fun. The album, which marks the end of a mammoth, twelve-album contract that he’s been tied to for over thirty years, proves beyond doubt that his appetite for satire and parody remains as sharp as ever, with Iggy Azalea, Lorde, Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke amongst the artists on the receiving end of the dubious honour of getting the ‘Weird Al’ treatment. He’s continuing to tour at a prodigious rate, too, with his extensive Alpocalypse run documented on DVD three years ago. Late last year, he played a slew of shows across America, which saw him run through classics from ‘his’ considerable back catalogue; whilst tracks like ‘White and Nerdy’ and ‘Eat It’ may have dated a little in terms of their cultural references, there was also plenty of evidence that he remains ahead of the curve, with ‘TMZ’ sending up the trashy gossip site of the same name. He hasn’t played in the UK since late 2010, but new dates should follow soon now that the album’s out; it could be your last chance to catch him, too, with the end of his contract sparking rumours of retirement.

I had been wanting to see Weird Al live since I was 9 years old singing along to "Yoda" on my boom box and when the stars finally aligned he played mostly songs that I had never heard before. Granted, I was listening to other stuff during high school and college so missed most of these original songs when they were released. So this was my first time hearing "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota", "Close but no Cigar", "Albuquerque", and many more and they were fabulous. I have since gone and searched out all of these "new-to-me" songs and can honestly say that the live performance was superior in every single instance. Al's mature voice is much more resonate and his band is tight. The lighting techs also earned every penny for their fabulous production. This was hands down one of the top 10 concert experiences I have had with one band and a set list under 2 hours. The medley of parody covers set to different music and musical styles was even better than his polka mixes; and I love those accordion fests!

Let me just start off by saying this concert was amazing. The concert began with a short animation segment giving the title and everything for the concert, and then on the screen live footage began streaming of Weird LA himself coming down the hall singing. As he danced down the hall singing his first song, he interacted with employees, and people in the hall as he went. He came out and jumped on stage for the last few verses on the song and then transitioned in to the next few songs. He performed great, and he was very detailed. Between almost every song he changed costumes and during his absence, clips were played on the screen of different appearances on TV shows, or references that had been made to him. All in all, this was an amazing concert and this being my first concert, I was very impressed.

This was a great and very entertaining preformance. This was also the first concert I have ever been to and I enjoyed it a lot. I love the song choices "Weird Al" had for us too, it was all of his classic songs/most popular or common songs. I only wish he had sung his "Living in the Fridge" song since the shirt theme for that concert performance was for that song. I also wish that he had sung "Melanie" because my name is Melanie and hoped hed asked for all the Melanies in the crowd to come up on stage as he sang the song. Other than those small minor things it was the best concert ever and I will not forget about it for as long as I live. LOVE YA "WEIRD AL."

Had a great time at the the Weird Al show. This was the second time I've seen him and the show was basically the same, but there was some new footage in the gag reels. The sound system did not work very well during his opening number, "Tacky", as he came from behind the stage area. Camera footage was off a bit as well then. But, it did not do anything to impact the rest of the show and everything else was perfect. Definitely a fun and entertaining show--loved it!

Outstanding! I found his energy level very exhilarating, especially considering his mid-life age. My wife and I found Weird Al's entire two hr. show extremely entertaining! His different acts required many costume changes and reminded me of a type of show I'd expect had he been in residency at a large Las Vegas, NV casino/resort.

"Weird Al" Yankovic

“Weird Al” Yankovic is eager to get back on the road after a long pandemic break, which is why it makes sense that the accordion squeezing polkamaniac rolled out a massive slate of 2022 dates for his cleverly named next tour.

As a sequel to his 77-date Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour in 2018, Al is revving up the odds and sods machine again for the 2022 The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour , which will once again eschew his more famous parody songs and hits for deeper cuts. The singer’s site notes that the 133-date trek is once again not his normal outing, reminding fans that “this is a scaled-down tour with limited production (no costumes, props, or video screens) in smaller theatres and more intimate settings, and Al’s setlist will be comprised almost entirely of his original (non-parody) songs.”

The special guest on the tour that is slated to kick off on April 26 at the Bardavon Opera House in Poughkeepsie, New York is veteran comedian Emo Philips, who was also the opener on the first go-round. The routing will keep Al on the road through an Oct. 29 show at new York’s Carnegie Hall, his first-ever gig at that venerable venue. “I’ve loved doing every single incarnation of my live show, but honestly the Vanity tour is the most fun I’ve ever had on stage,” Yankovic said in a statement, “so I’ve been dying to get back out there and torture everybody with it once again!”

So, while fans on the previous tour didn’t get favorites such as “Eat It,” “Fat” or “My Bologna,” each set list on the original Self-Indulgent tour featured a rotation of more than 50 originals, including “The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota,” “Christmas at Ground Zero,” “Generic Blues,” “I Was Only Kidding,” “Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung,” “The Night Santa Went Crazy” and many more. Tickets for the tour go on sale on Dec. 10.

"Weird Al" Yankovic

The unfortunate return of the ridiculously self-indulgent, ill-advised vanity tour with special guest emo philips.

  • Aug 10 | Wednesday , 2022 7:30 PM Buy Tickets

About the Event

Almost four years after his first foray into unfamiliar concert territory with his highly-acclaimed Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tou r, “Weird Al” Yankovic is pressing his luck again, this time with The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour . The tour marks Weird Al’s long-anticipated return to the concert stage after his hugely successful Strings Attached Tour in 2019 where he performed each night alongside a full symphony orchestra.

Once again drawing from his back catalogue of 14 studio albums, Weird Al promises to deliver a different set list every night, with no two shows the same. As before, rather than focusing on the hits from his career, the show will feature Yankovic’s non-parody material – the somewhat more obscure pastiches and original songs that have largely escaped the pop culture radar but are adored by his long-time fans. And like the last Vanity Tour , he is leaving behind the high-octane theatrics that he’s known for and going bare-bones – no costumes, no props, no video screens… just Al and his band of almost four decades in smaller, more intimate venues, hanging out on stage, playing music.

----------------

“Weird Al” Yankovic is the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time. A five-time Grammy winner, his 2014 release Mandatory Fun was the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200. He is one of only five artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades, the other four being Michael Jackson, Madonna, U2, and Kenny G. On August 27, 2018 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded Weird Al with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Legendary comedian Emo Philips has performed over 7000 stand-up comedy shows across the globe, including a two-week theater run in London’s West End. Career highlights include his acclaimed comedy album E=MO Squared and the hour-long HBO special Emo Philips Live at the Hasty Pudding Theatre . Emo is especially proud, however, of when he got to demonstrate the proper use of a table saw to Weird Al in the film UHF .

"Weird Al" Yankovic

Frequently asked questions.

Who can I contact for Al’s professional engagements or other business?

You can start with Al’s agency, Wasserman.  Depending on the nature of the request they will route you to the correct person there.  You can contact them here .

How did Al get his start in the music business?

As a teenager, Al began sending homemade tapes of his songs to Dr. Demento, a nationally syndicated disc jockey known for playing comedy and novelty music. Demento found a certain charm in the accordion-powered ditties that Al recorded on a cheap cassette player in his own bedroom, and gave him his first airplay. By the time Al graduated from college, he not only had a modest cult following from the good Doctor’s radio show, but he also had a couple of nationally-released singles (“My Bologna” and “Another One Rides The Bus”). In 1982 he signed a deal with Scotti Bros. Records, who went on to release all of his albums through Bad Hair Day (1996). Volcano Records eventually bought Scotti Bros. Records, issuing Running With Scissors and Poodle Hat , and re-releasing Al’s entire catalog on the Volcano/Way Moby label.

Does Al get permission to do his parodies?

Al does get permission from the original writers of the songs that he parodies. While the law supports his ability to parody without permission, he feels it’s important to maintain the relationships that he’s built with artists and writers over the years. Plus, Al wants to make sure that he gets his songwriter credit (as writer of new lyrics) as well as his rightful share of the royalties.

What do the original artists think of the parodies?

Most artists are genuinely flattered and consider it an honor to have Weird Al parody their work. Some groups (including Nirvana) claim that they didn’t realize that they had really “made it” until Weird Al did a parody of them!

What about Coolio? I heard that he was upset with Al about “Amish Paradise.”

That was a very unfortunate case of misunderstanding between Al’s people and Coolio’s people. Short version of the story: Al recorded “Amish Paradise” after being told by his record label that Coolio had given his permission for the parody. When Al’s album came out, Coolio publicly contended that he had never given his blessing, and that he was in fact very offended by the song. To this day we’re not exactly sure who got their facts wrong, but Al sincerely apologizes to Coolio for the misunderstanding.

Have any artists ever turned Al down for a parody?

Even though most recording artists really do have a pretty good sense of humor, on a few very rare occasions Al has been denied permission to do a parody. Actually, the only artist to turn Al down consistently over the years has been the Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. Go figure.

Why wasn't there a music video for Poodle Hat ? Al was actually planning to do a video for "Couch Potato" (his parody of Eminem's "Lose Yourself"). But unfortunately, even though Eminem was okay with Al having the parody on his album, for some strange reason he denied permission for Al to make a music video for the song. Since Al was already in pre-production on the video and also had to put together his AL-TV special and gear up for a 3-month concert tour, he didn't have the time to switch gears and do a video for a different song. Al did put together a couple of makeshift videos for AL-TV (including one for the song "Bob" which was a dead-on parody of Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" from the Don't Look Back documentary), but those were low-budget quickies that were intended to be exclusive to the VH1 special. --> Does Al only do parodies of other songs?

No… about half of the songs on Al’s albums are originals, meaning that Al wrote the music as well as the lyrics. Some originals are in the style of another artist (like “Bob” or “Genius In France”), but they’re still entirely new compositions. If you’re not sure whether a song is an original or a parody, check the writing credits in the liner notes of Al’s albums.

I’ve found some songs on the Internet that are supposedly by Al, but I’ve never heard them on any of his albums. What the hey?

Unfortunately, there are a lot of song parodies floating around the Internet being attributed to Al which were in fact done by somebody else. If you want to verify whether or not a song is actually by Al, check the Catalog page.

Who are Al’s musical influences?

Al credits Spike Jones, Stan Freberg, Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, Shel Silverstein, Frank Zappa and all the other wonderfully sick and twisted artists that he was exposed to through the Dr. Demento Radio Show.

What’s Al’s full name?

Alfred Matthew Yankovic.

Where was Al born?

Al is the only child of Nick & Mary Yankovic. He grew up in Lynwood, California (a suburb of Los Angeles), although the hospital he was actually born in was in the neighboring town of Downey.

How old is he now?

Al was born at 1:56 PM on October 23, 1959. You figure it out.

Where did Al go to school?

Al attended Lynwood High school, where he was a straight-A student and graduated as Valedictorian at the age of 16. From there he went to the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, where he got a degree in Architecture.

Did Al ever have any “real” jobs before he got famous?

In high school Al was a part-time accordion teacher and occasional accordion repo-man (don’t ask). After graduating from college, Al decided that architecture was not for him, so he worked for a few years in the mailroom and later at a desk job for a large radio syndication company in Culver City, California.

What are Al’s physical statistics?

Al is 6′-0″ tall and weighs around 185 pounds. He has brown eyes and naturally curly (no perm!) reddish brown hair. His shoe size is 10½, his underwear size is Medium, his shirt size is usually L or XL, and his head is larger-than-human.

What happened to Al’s moustache and glasses?

In January 1998 Al got LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) surgery to correct his near-sightedness, so he no longer needs to wear glasses. He decided to get rid of the facial hair about the same time, although he sometimes grows it back when nobody’s looking.

What is Al’s marital status?

Al got married on February 10, 2001 to his wife Suzanne. They have a daughter named Nina, born February 11, 2003.

Where does Al live now?

Al and his family divide their time between homes in the Hollywood Hills and Maui.

Is Al related to the famous accordion-playing Polka King, Frankie Yankovic?

No, although they were friends for many years. (In October 1998, Frankie passed away at his home in Florida at the age of 83.)

What nationality is Al?

Al’s grandparents on his father’s side were Yugoslavian, and on his mother’s side they were Italian and English.

How did Al get the name “Weird Al”?

Although he seems to remember people calling him “Weird Al” during his freshman year in the Cal Poly dorms, it didn’t become official until Al started doing shifts as a DJ at his campus radio station, KCPR. He gave himself the air-name of “Weird Al” because of his penchant for playing music that was, well, kind of weird… and the nickname just kind of stuck.

What instruments does Al play?

Although he can play other keyboard instruments, the accordion has always been Al’s main “axe,” and he continues to play it on record as well as in concert. His first lesson was on the day before his 7th birthday. After three years of accordion lessons, he quit, deciding to continue learning on his own.

Is Al a vegetarian?

Yes. He changed his diet in 1992 after a fan gave him a book called “Diet For A New America.” He currently eats no meat and also tries to avoid eggs and dairy products.

Can I send my song ideas to Al?

Sorry, for legal and personal reasons, Al does not accept song ideas from fans (he’s got plenty warped ideas on his own!)

How can I get an autograph from Al?

While it’s certainly never guaranteed, sometimes after one of his concerts Al will meet with fans and sign autographs before he’s ready to leave the venue (around an hour or so after the show has ended). He also occasionally holds in-store signing appearances. You can also try sending a letter (and a stamp) to Close Personal Friends Of Al (PMB #4018, 8033 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90046) and asking reeeeal nice, but be prepared to wait a good, long while (visualize a glacier).

What is Al’s Brain?

July 2009 saw the debut of “AL’S BRAIN: A 3-D Journey through the Human Brain with ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic” at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, California. It was seen by a quarter of a million people there, and went on to have another successful run at Western Washington’s Puyallup Fair in September, 2009.

What is AL-TV ?

Every now and then (usually around the time of an album release), Al would dust off his pirate satellite broadcasting transmitter and take over the airwaves of MTV or VH1. Al has done 10 AL-TV specials since 1984, with the shows ranging between 1 hour and 4 hours in length. During the course of a typical special, Al “interviews” some of his close personal friends in the music biz, shows off the talents of his best-friend-in-the-whole-world Harvey the Wonder Hamster, and of course plays all the videos that HE wants to watch!

Where can I track down Al’s really old stuff?

If you search a deep dark corner of the Internet, you might be be able to track down early, early recordings like “It’s Still Billy Joel To Me,” “School Cafeteria,” “Baby Likes Burping,” “You Don’t Take Your Showers,” “Nobody Here But Us Frogs,” “Belvedere Cruising” and many others… but don’t you have better things to do with your time?

You may also want to read the text of the booklet from “Permanent Record – Al In The Box” to learn more about Al than anybody really needs to know.

If you still have an unanswered question, try looking through the Ask Al archives.
