Getting Around in Laos

The national carrier, Lao Airlines (Pangkham Rd., Vientiane; tel. 021/512-028; www.laoairlines.com) is the only domestic airline in Laos. It used to have a very bad reputation for safety, and indeed the United Nations banned its staff from using it. It has improved greatly in the last decade. They fly in both directions from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, Pakse, Phonsavan, Udomxai, Huay Xai, Luang Nam Tha, and Savannakhet; and from Luang Prabang to Pakse and Phonsavan.

Lao Air (tel. 021/513-022; www.lao-air.com) is small airline based at Wattay Airport serving remote areas in northern Laos. They fly from Vientiane to Sam Nua, Xayabury, and Phongsaly. You can find the full up-to-date schedule on their website. You can pay with a credit card if in Vientiane or Luang Prabang, but if elsewhere you will need cash. Flights can be heavily booked over holiday periods such Lao New Year, so book well in advance. It's recommended that you confirm your flights a day or two in advance.

The bus system has vastly improved over the last few years in coverage, speed, and comfort. Nevertheless, taking a long-distance bus in Laos can be an arduous option, and may be very slow and often quite crowded. Quality really varies. Buses can also be packed with other passengers' luggage or great piles of goods being transported from one place to another. Buses are slow, so unless you're in a big hurry it will help your blood pressure to plan trips in short stages.

On major routes, minibuses will parallel the public buses for a few more dollars. They are certainly faster though not any more comfortable, since you will still be crammed in and they swing around the bends in a way that can make your head spin.

Air-conditioned VIP buses (often from the magnificently named company "King of Bus") ply the routes between major towns. On the long journey from Champasak to Vientiane, there are many companies offering sleeper buses with your own curtained-off bunk. The VIP buses are best booked through a travel agent or your hotel. VIP buses vary considerably between air-conditioned luxury to vehicles piled high with luggage and added chaos.

When you are in the mountainous north, whichever of these options you take the driver will most likely be issuing all passengers with a plastic bag or two. That is because these mountain roads bring whole new meaning to the words "travel sick."

Finally, there is that mainstay of Lao transport, the songthaeaw . This is a van with a covered rear with two benches (the word means "two rows" in Lao) on either side facing each other. They tend to cover smaller local journeys, though you certainly can take them all the way on longer routes if you are feeling particularly sociable.

The river used to be the main means of transport in Laos. That has changed rapidly as the whole country progresses to being sealed and paved, and road transport has undercut river transport in both money and time. Yet for tourists who look forward to the experience of slow river trips through jungled limestone canyons, it is a different story. The journey down from Huay Xai in the north to Pakbeng remains very popular and a number of companies run vessels of varying luxury. You can book a ticket from a travel agent on the Thai side of the border in Chiang Khong before you cross, though this is not recommended because you won't see what you are getting. For the normal tourist boat, you can simply walk through immigration in Huay Xai and then wander down to where the boats are moored and buy a ticket for $20. The trip can be wonderful unless the boat is too crowded, so that is something to watch out for. The boats leave when they have enough passengers loaded on, and the trip takes about 6 to 8 hours. One tends to leave by about 10am and arrive around 4:30pm. Pakbeng has transformed from the sleepiest of backwaters only a decade ago to a place flooded with tourist money, so people may be pushy. Boat traffic south of Luang Prabang is virtually nonexistent. Elsewhere in the country you can charter your own boat, but that is expensive and logistically complicated.

Warning: Speedier but Scarier -- If you are in a hurry, the quickest way to move is by Lao speedboat -- a narrow flat-bottomed skiff with an outsize car engine bolted to the back that skims the surface of the water at 50 mph (80 km/h), shooting rapids and narrowly missing boulders. If you do reach your destination, you will do it very quickly. Huay Xai to Luang Prabang takes about 6 hours and costs $30.

Passengers are required to wear a helmet and a life jacket, with very good reason. These craft are extremely dangerous with a track record of accidents. If you do choose to take your life in your hands, it's definitely an experience for the adrenaline junkie. It is, at turns, both exhilarating and terrifying as you imagine the bottom of the boat being ripped out and yourself disemboweled by the needle-sharp points just below the surface of the churning water. It is worth remembering that medical care in northern Laos is basic to say the least. At the time of writing, speedboat service on the route from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang had been suspended due to noise disruption and accidents. It was still running on the Nam Ou River from Phonsaly to Muong Khua.

By Motorcycle & Car

Laos offers an experience only one stop away from nirvana for those who like their scenery served up on two wheels. Not long ago most of the country was strictly dirt bike territory, but now that is ancient history. These days you can tour most of the country on a heavy Harley Davidson or a Triumph Bonneville if you so wish. Most of the main roads are surfaced and there is little traffic, although you want to keep a careful eye out for what there is. The scenery in northern Laos is unparallel -- one descends from huge mountains into vistas of limestone karst outcrops that stretch as far as the eye can see. If this is your cup of tea, take Rte. 13 from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang.

In Laos you are required to wear a helmet by law, but you will notice that most people don't. Wear one anyway and make sure it fits well and is of adequate quality. Wear gloves and a jacket, and make sure you have goggles or a visor. Both bugs and dust can be a problem. Above all, ride slowly to give yourself plenty of reaction time. The traffic may be sparse, but dogs, pigs, snakes, goats, water buffalo, and small children are unpredictable and appear out of nowhere. Also be aware that drivers in Lao, particularly Vientiane, are aggressive. Keep space around you. For up-to-date and in-depth info from real motorcycling experts check out www.gt-rider.com. A bike suitable for touring, generally 250cc dirt bikes, costs $25 a day and can be hired in Vientiane.

If you are pushed for time and want to undertake an organized motorcycle or self-guided tour tailored to your needs, but with expert support, Remote Asia (www.remoteasia.com) in Vientiane are the experts. They offer a range of services including motorcycle rental (ranging from well maintained 400cc cruising road bikes to 250cc dirt bikes), equipment rental, plus a flexible range of tour options. They'll design an itinerary that will cater to your needs and ensure you don't waste a precious minute of your motorcycling adventure. They will also keep in touch with you along the way to make sure everything is running as planned and smooth the way if you alter your plans on a whim.

If you want to rent a runaround to see the sites, you can hire a 100cc-to-125cc step-through in most towns of any size for $5 and $15. Some are Thai-made and some are Chinese-made -- the Thai-made bikes are better.

You can rent a car to drive yourself if you wish, but generally it costs no more to hire one with a driver who is used to the roads, knows where he is going, and is responsible for any damage or breakdowns. Your hotel or a travel agent will be able to organize a car and driver for about $50 a day. If you want to drive yourself, the most established options are LaoWheels (tel. 021/223-663 or 020/550-4604), which provides a very friendly personal service (there's no address; you just call them up), or Asia Vehicle Rental (354 -- 356 Samsenthai Rd.; tel. 021/217-493; www.avr.laopdr.com), which rents a range of cars, pickups, and bikes.

By Tuk-Tuk & Jumbo

These three-wheeled vehicles are ideal for short journeys around town. Jumbos (found only in Vientiane) are a bit larger than tuk-tuks, and their engine and cabin size mean they can carry more people. Both are generally motorbikes with a trailer welded to the back and cost about 25¢ per kilometer. In both Luang Prabang and Vientiane, you will need to haggle hard.

For serious cyclists, as with serious motorcyclists, Laos is love at first sight. The good roads, sparse traffic, and fantastic scenery make it one of the best countries for cycling in all of Asia. Most cyclists bring their own bike, but you can rent one in most towns, and companies run organized tours, particularly Green Discovery (www.greendiscoverylaos.com). You should be aware that some of the maps of Laos are a bit far-fetched and they shouldn't be relied on. Gradients can be misleading and in northern Laos that can be a real problem. You will need some preparation for the hills and the heat. You should let others know where and when you are going. In southern Laos it is not too much of an issue, but parts of the north are a little wilder. Getting lifts on the backs of trucks and getting on buses with a bike is no problem, and there's no extra cost.

Whether you need heels for standing all day or a pair of comfortable heels to travel with, this list of shoes has you covered.

Comfortable Heels for Travelers to Pack

Each pair of comfortable heels was evaluated for their versatility, comfort, customer reviews, and packability.

Anne Klein Xiana Bootie

high heel sport booties

  • Versatility: 4. The sporty-casual heel can easily be dressed up or down, and the solid black color goes with most outfits. The rubber sole provides good traction in all sorts of weather.
  • Comfort: 4. Reviewers rank this pair of heels high on the comfort scale.
  • Packability: 3.5. With a longer heel, these shoes will take up space in your suitcase, but it’s pretty easy to pack around them.
  • Reviews: 31 five-star reviews. Standout review: “These booties are extremely comfortable. The padding is perfect for reducing pressure on my feet and the heel is perfect for standing longer than expected.”

  Pashion Footwear

black patent leather interchangeable heels

  • Versatility: 5. A comfortable heel that also converts to a flat? Sign me up. These convertible heels can be worn in two different ways: as a flat or as a four-inch high heel.
  • Comfort: 4. With the quick ability to transform these shoes into flats, you’ll get instant comfort without a heel.
  • Packability: 5. These comfortable high heels are really two shoes in one. They even come with their own handy carrying case.
  • Reviews: There are 16 five-star reviews on the Pashion website . Standout review: “These women are genius! Love, love, love my new shoes, the three-inch heel that I got also is perfect for me on my feet all day–now make it in every color!”

TOMS Emmy Boots

leopard print and black boot

  • Versatility: 4.5. Whether you pick a trendy animal print or neutral color, these boots go with almost any outfit or occasion.
  • Comfort: 4.5. The block heel makes standing in these heels all day a breeze, and you can even hustle through an airport in them comfortably (trust me).
  • Packability: 3.5. While these are a boot and thus take up a little more space in your suitcase, this pair of comfortable heels might be the only pair of shoes you need on a weekend trip.
  • Reviews: No reviews are available on the website, but I personally tested these in the leopard print and haven’t taken them off. Plus, I’ve gotten tons of compliments and even convinced a few other people to buy them after wandering around in them over a long weekend in New York City.

TOMS Leilani Booties

comfortable low ankle boot

  • Versatility: 4. These comfortable heels are a classic take on the ankle boot and can be worn in all seasons.
  • Comfort: 4. With an OrthoLite Eco X40 insole and sturdy block heel, our tester rated these heels high in comfort.
  • Packability: 4. As an ankle bootie, these don’t take up too much space in your suitcase and could be a contender for a “one shoe” trip .
  • Reviews: No reviews on the website, but our tester loved these shoes right out of the box, getting major style points.

Aerosoles Deal Breaker

aerosoles leather heel

  • Versatility: 3.5. For travelers needing a business heel or proper stiletto, these comfortable heels are for you.
  • Comfort: 3.5. Aerosoles goes above and beyond to make these pumps comfortable. From a memory foam insole to a patent-pending heel rest design, these really are the most comfortable pair of proper heels you’ll find.
  • Packability: 3. Unfortunately, there’s not much you can do about packing an awkwardly shaped pair of shoes, but if you need a pair of comfortable high heels, these are your winners.
  • Reviews: Highly rated on Aerosoles site at 4.5 stars. Standout review: “Bought these pumps and my feet are in heaven! Don’t even think to kick them off when I come home. Great purchase!”

laowheels travel

  Aerosoles Eye Candy

low suede and leather comfortable heel

  • Versatility: 4. This low, block-heel shoe is casual enough for light walking or dressy enough to wear to a formal event.
  • Comfort: 4.5. Like many Aerosoles shoes, this pair of comfortable heels is made with comfort technology and even a removable footbed.
  • Packability: 4. When tested, these shoes didn’t take up as much room as you would think, making them the perfect pair of heels to throw in your weekend bag “just in case.”
  • Reviews: Highly rated on the Aerosoles site at four stars. Standout review: “Having the block heel is so comfortable, even with my problem knees. Didn’t have to change into flats later in the day!”

Cougar Devlin Boot

wedge snowboot

  • Versatility: 3.5. A wedge-heel snow boot? Why, yes, this is actually a thing and they’re incredible. For fall and winter travels these heeled boots look stylish and hold up to rain, snow, and colder temps.
  • Comfort: 4. I personally tested these and my feet felt comfy and warm all day.
  • Packability: 3. These heeled boots are going to take up a decent amount of space, but since they’re so versatile, you could wear them on the plane and not look like you’re headed out to shovel your driveway.
  • Reviews: 4 . 65 stars based on 75 reviews on Cougar’s website . I personally tested these and after wearing them felt like they were the fall/winter boot I didn’t know I needed.

Everlane Day Heel

comfortable heels everlane

  • Versatility: 4.5. There are tons of color and material options for these heels, so it’s hard to pick just one. No matter your choice, these comfortable heels for travelers look just as good waiting in the TSA line as they do at happy hour.
  • Comfort: 4.5. I’ll let the reviews speak for themselves (there are over 4,000 of them). People love these for their comfort features: low heel height, soft leather, and elastic back.
  • Packability: 4.  This pair of comfortable heels is slightly scrunchable, so they take up a little less space than normal heels would in your bag.
  • Reviews: There are over 4,200 reviews on these comfortable heels, with an average rating of 4.39 stars. Standout review: “I loved these shoes right out of the box. I can’t/don’t normally wear heels because they aren’t easy for me to walk in and aren’t comfortable. These are different—easy to wear/walk with the wide block heel, I don’t feel wobbly. Soft, buttery leather and cushy insole are great on my feet. These are perfect for work or a night out and really cute with cuffed jeans!”

laowheels travel

  Naturalizer Vera

comfortable heel red block

  • Versatility: 4. If you’re in need of a pair of traveling shoes for parties, this pair of heeled sandals is especially great for outdoor weddings and events.
  • Comfort: 4. The low block here is comfortable and supportive, plus the insole is cushioned and the outside is flexible and non-slip for extra stability.
  • Packability: 3. Since these are heeled sandals, it’s pretty easy to pack around this pair of comfortable heels.
  • Reviews: These shoes have over 25 five-star reviews on the Naturalizer site . Standout review: “I love these shoes! With this style, it is hard to find a comfortable shoe. These are very comfortable. The leather is soft and the heel isn’t too high, but is high enough to look nice.”

laowheels travel

Cole Haan Grand Ambition Pump

comfortable heel snakeskin print

  • Versatility: 3.5. Currently, these are one of Cole Haan’s best-selling pairs of shoes, and while the snakeskin is a specific taste, it’s actually surprisingly versatile. The pump style is specific for those needing to dress up a bit more, but why not wear them all the time if they’re this comfy?
  • Comfort: 4. These are the most comfortable pair of heels, according to science … yes, you read that right. Cole Haan worked with the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Biomechanics Laboratory to create a shoe collection, called Grand Ambition, that maximizes fit, feel, flexibility, and cushioning.
  • Packability: 3.5. The pump style is slightly awkward to pack.
  • Reviews: Right now there are seven five-star reviews on Cole Haan’s site . Standout review: “Cole Haan has found the secret to combining comfort with style! This will be the most gorgeous, comfortable shoe you own! Bought them in every color and pattern available so far.”

laowheels travel

Cole Haan Emory Bow Wedge

cole haan tan wedge heel

  • Versatility: 4.5. The bow adds a feminine touch while the patent leather makes for a more polished look. You can easily wear these on the plane, out to dinner, or to an event.
  • Comfort: 4.5. With a fully padded sock lining and tons of “these shoes are so comfortable” reviews, these wedge heels won’t blister or make your feet sore.
  • Packability: 4. These shoes are slightly crushable, so you shouldn’t have too much of a problem fitting them in your suitcase.
  • Reviews: Rated 4.8 stars on Cole Haan’s website with 30 reviews. Standout review: “These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever had, even better than my sneakers. This is the 4th pair I own.”

Dream Paris Low-Chunk Low Heel Pump Sandals with Ankle Strap

tan block heel shoe

  • Versatility: 4. I have three different pairs of these shoes and have worn them at just about every summer event, from weddings to backyard cookouts. They can look casual or be dressed up for a special occasion and are available in dozens of colors and prints.
  • Comfort: 3 . 5. For the price, these really can’t be beaten. I can comfortably wear them for an evening out or a day event. Given the lower price, they don’t have any fancy comfort technology, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t comfy.
  • Packability: 4. It’s easy to pack other items around these comfortable heels since it’s an open sandal style.
  • Reviews: These shoes are rated as a 4.3 with over 400 reviews on Amazon . Standout review: “These shoes are great! They’re so flattering and well made. I was nervous about getting blisters but wore them for about 8 hours and only started getting pain towards the end. They were right on the pinky toe and under the clasp, but nothing a bandaid can’t fix. Overall I am SO HAPPY with this purchase and will definitely be buying another color!”

Padded Socks

When you’re really in a pinch and need to make any pair of your current shoes comfortable, purchase a pair of padded socks . I almost always travel with these, especially with a new pair of shoes.

One of the most satisfying moments when someone compliments your shoes is then being able to brag about how comfortable they are. Finding that perfect pair of heels that blend style and comfort can sometimes feel like uncovering a hidden gem, especially when you’re looking for versatile options to travel with.

“I love this discussion because it's like the bane of our existence, trying to look nice and then you're waking up the next morning and everything hurts because you've been in heels for too long,” says podiatrist Dr. Saylee Tulpule, DPM. That’s why when you’re packing heels for travel, make sure to pick closet staples that you've already broken in, Dr. Tulpule says (more on that below), and those that will match the most amount of outfits for the occasion of your trip. The right choice will save you precious luggage real estate for shoes you won’t end up wearing, and your feet will thank you for not being in pain for days if you plan on walking a lot.

The Travel + Leisure team tested 28 pairs of heels — ranging from pumps and platforms to mules and sandals —  for comfort, versatility, and functionality for travel. We evaluated and compared each option based on fit, comfort, support, quality, and value. (Read more about our comprehensive testing process below). We tested each pair of heels for over six months to ensure each option’s reliability.

Best Overall

Dream pairs pump sandals.

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Support 5 /5

The silhouette is a timeless classic that you can dress up or down.

The front strap can potentially feel uncomfortable for long-term wear.

Imagine stepping into the perfect pair of heels that blends comfort and style, and most importantly, doesn’t break the bank at under $50. We love that these heels come in more than two dozen color choices — ensuring an option for every occasion — and 18 sizes, including wide fits. Above all, we found that we were able to skip the dreaded breaking-in period and after six months, the heels still felt high quality. The suede material holds up well, and the three-inch chunky heel gives just enough height without torturing your feet during a night out. They’ll even help you pack less since they work for so many different events, from destination weddings and nice dinners to business trips. These shoes bring a modern yet classic feel to any outfit, recommended for anyone who wants a pair of reliable, timeless heels in their closet.

Best for Business Trips

Nine west kuna pointy toe pumps.

  • Comfort 4.8 /5
  • Support 4.5 /5

These Nine West heels are comfortable enough for a day in the office without compromising on style.

After six months of regularly wearing these heels, we found that they are not compatible with icy or slippery surfaces and the wearer should beware of grates and other surfaces on which the thin heel may get caught.

The last thing you want to happen when you’re traveling for work is to be stuck with a pair of uncomfortable shoes for several days. That’s why we found the perfect heels that you can reliably bring on any business trip and conquer the day, and the secret is in the kitten heel (which has made a total comeback, by the way!). Despite initial concerns, the extreme pointed toe didn't compromise the true-to-size fit during testing. We found that the shoes offered comfort and mobility, with the kitten heel providing just enough arch support without pressure on the knees. We were also impressed with the quality with details like the suede leather and cushioned insole.

Calvin Klein Larin Pump

  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Quality 3.5 /5

We love the style of the strap curving across the instep and continuing to the heel.

These heels fit well, but prepare to break them in over your first few wears.

Not only are these shoes the most comfortable pumps on our list, but they’re also one of our favorites with a pointy toe. We love the support and comfort this pair provides, although they caused some pinching and chafing after extended wear, especially in hot weather. The classic and pretty aesthetic make it a dress shoe that won’t go out of style, and the thinner heel makes it easy to throw into a bag and travel with.

The Details: 3-inch heel | Leather | Sizes 5 to 11

Best Espadrille

Castañer carina wedge espadrilles.

Net-a-Porter

The sturdy canvas and adjustability of the straps minimizes a breaking in or stretching period.

Even after six months of testing, these shoes pinch at the base of our toes.

Our T+L team member praised this pair of espadrilles as “the valedictorian of heels” and wished all of her shoes felt this comfortable — even her best pair of flats! We love that the canvas material and adjustable straps make this pair comfortable from the first wear, with a solid yet bouncy feel, no rubbing or chafing, and excellent arch support. The wrap-around design allows for breathability, which is crucial if you’re traveling to warmer or tropical climates such as Spain (and you'll fit right in in the birthplace of espadrilles). Plus, the rubber lining on the bottom prevents slipping.

Best Block Heel

Franco sarto linley slide sandal.

Franco Sarto

  • Comfort 4.5 /5

These shoes are easy to walk in and make you feel like you’re not even wearing heels.

If you’re deciding between sizes, we recommend sizing up.

Come for the cute and modern design, stay for the amount of comfort you’re getting with this pair. When trying this pair on for the first time, we noticed initial tightness across the toe strap, but the shoes stretched out over time, becoming more comfortable. This Franco Sarto pair is easy to walk in, is breathable, and lacks slipping issues we sometimes see with slides. We credit them with good arch support, thanks to a well-mimicked arch design and quality cushioning. The thick block heel has a modern design and feels balanced and steady. Despite some creasing, the shoes maintained their high-quality appearance throughout wear with consistent stitching. Overall, these shoes are a great way to dress any outfit up or down without the typical pain associated with heels.

Best Platform

Larroudé olivia platform pump.

This pair of platform pumps are a definite statement shoe with an elevated, unique look compared to a traditional Mary Jane.

After six months of testing, we wish the inside of the shoe was softer and more comfortable.

You know how the old saying goes: don’t judge a shoe by its chunky platform heel. While the combined height and bulk of this pair may look intimidating, we found these pumps to be completely walkable. The shoes didn’t require a break-in period; wearing them for the first time is more about acclimating to walking in a platform heel and learning how they respond to your movements. We were happily surprised that despite the patent leather material, we experienced no blisters or chafing, even without socks on. The most notable feature that contributes to the comfort of these shoes is the thick and durable yet stretchy elastic next to each buckle on the strap, providing enough room for your foot to push forward with each step. Overall, we gave these shoes a perfect score thanks to their sturdiness, high-quality construction, genuine leather material, and seasonal versatility.

Best Splurge

Sarah flint perfect pump 85.

Sarah Flint

  • Value 4.5 /5

These heels provide superior comfort, evident by details like the arch and heel support and noticeable padding on the insoles.

The highest price on this list, these pumps are a worthwhile investment that is meant to last.

The Sarah Flint Perfect Pump 85 is the most expensive recommendation on our list, but we consider it a worthy investment, justified by the handmade Italian craftsmanship, high-quality materials, and overall comfort. The gorgeous and well-constructed design is complemented by comfort-driven features like anatomical arch support and extra footbed padding. Typical for a pointy shoe style, these shoes will initially feel snug but will stretch in width with wear. At the time of publish, there are 22 styles available, so there are plenty of options for various tastes or any occasion you may be traveling for.

Best Strappy

Stuart weitzman nearlynude strap sandal.

Stuart Weitzman

  • Support 3.8 /5

This pair is worth the splurge: they feel high-end, premium, and of excellent quality.

There is not that much arch support or cushioning.

This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime pair of heels that you will buy and own forever. We deemed these shoes true to size and found that they require a brief break-in period for the initially stiff leather material that will soften with time. The leather material both looks and feels durable but soft, and the soles and hardwear look and feel hardy, too. We even tested out a white pair, and found that it didn’t scuff, scratch, or stain at all throughout wear. Another bonus: we thought these shoes were way more comfortable and supportive than similar strappy heels that we own from other high-end designers. The price tag is justified by the high-end, premium feel and excellent quality, making them a recommended investment for those seeking designer strappy heels.

Best Everyday

Vivaia round-toe chunky heels.

  • Comfort 3.5 /5
  • Support 4 /5

After six months of wearing to the office and out on the town, we found these to be a comfortable, high-quality pair of shoes.

The shoes had a break-in period causing initial blisters and irritation at the heels, but they became more comfortable for prolonged wear.

If you’re packing for a trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, let it be these Vivaia mid-size heels. The second we slid these shoes on, we knew they would be comfortable for all-day wear, thanks to the silky soft quilted cushioning in the footbed, the padded back heel, and the round toe design that leaves enough space for toe movement. They run true to size, accommodating wide feet without size adjustment. The materials feel high-quality, and the thick block heel adds ankle security. The shoes maintain a high-end and premium appearance, even after exposure to inclement weather and on uneven surfaces like cobblestones.

The Details: 1.77-inch heel | Natural Artemisia Argy and PU foam insole; rubber outsole | Sizes 5 to 11

Soda Open Toe Block Heel

The price is an absolute steal for shoes as comfortable, high performing, and durable as these.

These sandals don't have any exaggerated cushioning on the insoles, so someone who needs a higher level of arch support may need to take this into consideration.

There are a lot of reasons why we gave these sandals a perfect score, but the thing we love most is that they can fit in anyone’s budget. With 17 color options to choose from, this pair of shoes are great for anyone looking for comfortable, versatile, and affordable heeled sandals. Little to no break-in period was needed. The smooth, thick straps caused no discomfort during testing, even in humid weather, allowing easy and comfortable walking on various terrains for extended periods — which is perfect for exploring new places while staying fashionable.

The Details: 2.75-inch sandal; 1.5-inch platform | Imitation suede, nylon camouflage, man-made leather | Sizes 5.5 to 11

Vionic Bonita Wedge Sandal

  • Quality 4 /5

These wedges are exceptionally suitable for those not accustomed to wearing heels regularly.

We wish the toe area was slightly more roomy.

For those who typically avoid heels, these strappy wedges offer surprising comfort and versatility. Perfect for various occasions, the sandals impressed with their soft straps, providing a snug yet comfortable fit. We thought these had great arch support and proved easy to walk in; we felt perfectly steady even when walking across uneven ground and a variety of surfaces at a wedding, including grass, wood floors, carpet, cement, stone, gravel and polished cement.

Aerosoles Entree Shoe

  • Quality 4.5 /5

Put these shoes on with any outfit to instantly elevate your look with virtually no effort.

After six months of testing, we found that they still chafe, which can become uncomfortable.

This pair of mules stands out for their exceptional comfort, featuring great arch support, high-quality construction, and cushioning in the soles. They’re ideal for office wear, happy hours, commuting, and daytime activities. We especially noticed how compact they are and easy to throw into a bag for an overnight trip. It’s always a plus when shoes won’t take up too much room in your luggage. True to size, the shoes are easy to walk in and boast a thick toe strap that didn’t cause us to chafe during testing. The heel is just over 2 inches, providing stability, while the open-toe, open-back design adds breathability.

Best Loafer

Rothy's the lug loafer.

After six months of wearing, these shoes look brand new and the quality is incredibly high, featuring padded insoles and durable, rugged outsoles with an impressive grip and traction for a loafer.

These are not the most breathable shoes.

These heeled loafers from Rothy's offer a chic and versatile option for various occasions, ranging from brunch to work and dinner. The 1.5-inch heel provides a perfect balance of wearability and style, and the shoes boast high-quality construction. Our feet and arches felt incredibly supported by the shoes during testing, with padded insoles and excellent grip and traction making them suitable for various weather conditions. As one of the higher prices on this list, these loafers are considered a splurge, but the features make them worth the investment — they’re even machine-washable. We love that you can wear these shoes for all seasons, making them an instant staple for your travels.

Other Comfortable Heels We Liked

Four additional heels we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list but had some standout features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Dolce Vita Paily Sandal : These sandals with braided straps felt immediately great on the sole and arches, requiring little-to-no break-in time. With a block heel design, they offer support throughout the day, though some additional traction on the sole and a plainer finish on the block heel could enhance the overall appeal.

Everlane The Italian Leather Day Heel : Priced for sustainability, these low-to-the-ground heels offer comfort and quality, making them suitable for various occasions. However, there is not much arch support, so your foot will get tired after a few hours of extended wear.

Inez Diana Heel : We recommend these heels for those seeking an elegant pair for special occasions or all-day wear at work, provided they can handle mid-height stilettos. The front of the shoe does make your toes look more squished than they actually are, and the suede is easily scuffed.

Margaux The Heel : These block-heeled shoes offer excellent versatility and comfort with a soft cushioned interior, making them suitable for various occasions and prolonged wear. While the shoe's weight and stiffness caused some discomfort, the overall support was appreciated.

The T+L team tested 28 pairs of heels in everyday scenarios to assess fit, comfort, support, quality, and value. We followed a comprehensive examination to evaluate each option, including overall construction, fit, and comfort level (noting any rubbing, chafing, or pinching; arch support; and potential breaking-in period). Practical scenarios included traveling, dining out, shopping, running errands, work, and more to determine comfort during activities, functionality, and overall wearability.

We tested each pair of shoes for six months to monitor comfort, durability, performance, versatility for different occasions, and wearer satisfaction over an extended period. This involves continued use in various real-world settings, as we continue to note breathability, overall comfort during extended wear, foot support, versatility, traction on different surfaces, and any signs of discomfort or wear-and-tear, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of each pair of heels’ long-term reliability. We will update these results if our findings should change.

Tips for Buying Comfortable Heels

Look for comfortable features.

There are three main features you need to pay attention to when looking for the perfect pair of heels: height, toe-box shape, and the amount of stability it will provide your foot. Dr. Saylee Tulpule, DPM says that the ideal heel height is 3 inches or less because at shorter heights, there’s less pressure on the ball of your foot. “That [height is] ideal because the higher the heel, you're really putting pressure on the ball of your foot, and if you do wear a significantly high heel for long periods of time, that could mean in a given day or over of many years, you're going to end up with pain in the ball of your foot, calluses, neuromas, bunions, hammer toes, the list goes on,” she says.

Then, pay attention to the toe-box: similar to flats, you want to have a heel that has more of an almond, round, square shape. Last, heels with ankle straps will add more stability to your feet and will help keep the shoe in place.

Pay attention to material

The shoe’s material can make or break how comfortable they are going to be over time. Softer leathers (faux or otherwise), for example, are going to expand a little bit over time, so they won’t be so tight. “Whether we realize it or not, our feet do swell a little bit by the end of the day, especially if you have a job where you are standing or walking the majority of the time,” Dr. Tulpule says. “You do want to end up with material that can accommodate [that and] expand a little bit.”

Know how heels should fit

Consider the following for the perfect heel fit: toe space (enough room for your toes to wiggle), heel placement (your heel should rest comfortably against the back of the shoe), width (make sure they are not too narrow), arch support (the arch of the shoe should align with the arch of your foot), sizing (always go for the size to accommodate your larger foot), and secure straps (make sure they don’t dig into your skin).

A golden tip from our expert podiatrist Dr. Tulpule is to go shoe shopping at the end of the day because your feet are most likely to swell and slightly change size compared to the morning.

Making heels more comfortable comes down to breaking them in. Most importantly, take your time to wear them gradually for longer periods of time. “Start small,” Dr. Tulpule says. “For an hour or two, go to dinner, sit down, walk here and there. The break-in period is huge, especially because you just don't know how your foot's going to tolerate the height of the heel that you chose, the shank of the heel, things like that.” Tl;dr: don’t wear a brand-new pair of shoes for an eight-hour event for the first time!

You can also try using silicone gel inserts designed specifically for heels or blister blockers if you plan on wearing heels for hours at a time or walking long distances in them.

Block heels, platforms, and wedges will be more comfortable than a stiletto because they provide a larger surface area under the foot, reducing the pressure on the ball of the foot compared to putting all of your body weight on a very thin point with traditional stilettos or high-heeled shoes. Additionally, the chunky or wedge-shaped design offers a more balanced and natural feel, making them easier to walk in for extended periods. While comfort can vary depending on individual preferences and the specific design of each shoe, many people find platforms and wedges to be a more comfortable heel option.

Pack your heels with care to protect them from damage and to help maintain their shape. We recommend weekender bags or backpacks with designated shoe compartments , but otherwise use shoe bags to keep your shoes separate from other items to avoid any scuffing or scratches (cloth bags or pillowcases would also work just fine). Lastly, utilize any available space within your shoes for packing smaller items, like socks or accessories, to make the most of the space and protect the heel in the process.

I’ve always been a fan of nude or ivory shoes and prefer them to black. When it comes to choosing the perfect heels for travel – nude is definitely the way to go. Find out why nude is the ultimate heel color for travel!

Versatile, Classic and Stylish – A Nude Heel For Every Woman

While my long term travels don’t usually require me to wear heels, this summer I’ll be attending 3 weddings in Europe so I figured I’d shop early and get some that would also work for a few business meetings and the Women in Travel Summit (WITS) in Chicago.

Start by reading these general tips on choosing the best shoes for travel:

  • 10 Steps to Packing the Best Travel Shoes
  • The Importance of Packing the Best Shoes for Travel
  • Don’t Break these Travel Shoe Rules
  • Where to Shop for Comfort Shoes

When it comes to business-related activities, I just can’t wear flats – it’s engrained from my days of working in the fashion industry – I have to have my heels even in a trade show.

In order to embrace my new goal of minimalism in both travel and my life at “home”, I want a pair of shoes that I can wear with everything. Nude heels are the perfect option!

  • One of the best things about a pair of nude heels is that they match with everything – even an all-black wardrobe like mine.
  • They are appropriate for various settings – from special occasions to business and even a night out with friends, you can wear nude heels confidently for just about anything.
  • They elongate your legs which is always a bonus.
  • They don’t have to be boring. The last thing I want is a boring pair of shoes. Remember, style is always in the details.

How high can you go? Choose a height that you not only feel comfortable wearing but that are also appropriate for various settings. While 4 inch heels may have worked in the fashion industry, they may not fly in a more conservative corporate environment.

If you plan to purchase a pair of shoes that you can wear with everything, you need them to last. Invest wisely. While a price tag does not guarantee longevity, don’t let a higher cost scare you away from a pair of shoes that will last a lifetime.

Sometimes, not always, paying for better quality shoes can not only offer you durability but also comfort. Regardless, I always recommend these gel insoles for heels –they’re my little secret to standing in heels for hours at a time.

Making the choice to own a few quality items encourages you to shop carefully ensuring that you select styles that will work past this season’s latest trends. Choose a classic style that you’d love to wear for years to come.

Heel. Wedges, stilettos, or kitten heels? Not only does this choice have to do with your personal taste but if you plan to travel with them you should also consider your environment.

For business travel, you may only be in hotels or buildings so a pointy heel isn’t an issue but if you’re traveling to Italy, for example, with cobblestone streets wedges may be the best option.

15 Things to Do in Santa Clara (CA)

Santa Clara is a city of nearly 125,000 residents that’s located in Santa Clara County, about 75 kilometers south of San Francisco .

The city was founded more than 200 years ago as a Spanish Mission. Now, it’s most well-known for its booming tech industry that’s commonly referred to around the world as Silicon Valley.

Though it’s common knowledge to most football fans, it’s a surprise to many to discover that the relatively small city is also the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers.

Visitors to Santa Clara have abundant activity options at their fingertips without venturing outside city limits, so staying engaged and entertained shouldn’t be an issue.

1. Levi’s Stadium

Levi's Stadium

With a capacity of nearly 70,000, Levi’s Stadium on Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara is one of the country’s premier professional football stadiums.

The 49ers play their home games here, and during the off-season, the stadium hosts a variety of annual events, including concerts featuring big names in the music industry.

Taking a family to a football game isn’t the least expensive activity option in the area, but for those who’ve never taken in a pro game, it’s an exhilarating experience that may be worth the cost.

Guided tours are also regularly available, and the bars and restaurants around the stadium are fun to visit year-round.

2. Ulistac Natural Area

Ulistac Natural Area

Despite its large population and the overall hustle and bustle, the Bay Area features plenty of urban parks and natural areas that are convenient options for those interested in enjoying the great outdoors.

The Ulistac Natural Area is located on Lick Mill Road in Santa Clara. It is comprised of more than 40 acres that include a variety of distinct environments.

The natural area straddles the Guadalupe River and is home to an array of plants and animals that are well-suited to its riparian habitat.

A particularly popular attraction for bird watchers, it features a number of well-marked nature trails dotted with interpretive signs.

3. Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Californians take their art and wine seriously, and there’s no better way to combine the two than by visiting the Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival.

The event is held in the city’s Central Park and features nearly 200 vendors from across the country selling fine art and crafts, gourmet food, and a vast selection of California’s best wines.

Proceeds are donated to worthwhile causes that benefit residents in need. It all takes place in the early fall when the central California weather is perfect for outdoor activities.

Other highlights include live entertainment and lots of art-related activities for kids.

4. The de Saisset Museum

de Saisset Museum

Though he’s not exactly a household name for those who don’t typically travel in West Coast art circles, Ernest de Saisset was one of the Bay Area’s most prominent artists in the 19th century.

Saisset was a French immigrant who enrolled in Santa Clara University and studied painting as a young man.

The museum that now bears his name is located on the university’s campus. It includes a collection of more than 100 of his most impressive works.

It’s as much a historical attraction as it is an art one, and it also has other works from European and American artists dating back hundreds of years.

5. Intel Museum

Intel Museum

Intel is one of the titans of the tech world. Over the years, it has been responsible for some of the most significant technological leaps forward in computer hardware.

The Intel Museum is located on the campus of the company’s world headquarters in Santa Clara, and it’s regularly open to the public.

Even for those who don’t fall into the tech-savvy category, it’s a fascinating place that’s definitely worth an hour or two of time.

Though it may sound dry to technophobes, it’s packed with interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages, so it’s great for kids with short attention spans too.

6. Santa Clara Farmers’ Market

Farmers Market

There’s really no better way to rub elbows with locals, enjoy pleasant weather, and have access to tons of great products you won’t find elsewhere than by visiting a farmers’ market.

The Santa Clara Farmers’ Market is open year-round and features a little bit of everything – from seasonal produce and fresh baked goods to health and body products and prepared food items.

Held on Jackson Street near the downtown area, it’s common to find different items each time you go.

Spending a few bucks is a great way to support local farmers and entrepreneurs, and don’t be shy about asking them for suggestions for things to see and do while in town.

7. California’s Great America

California's Great America

There’s no shortage of theme parks in the Golden State, but there’s one clear choice for those visiting Santa Clara.

California’s Great America is located on Great America Parkway just outside of town. It features tons of rides, dining options, kid’s activities, and a water park that’s a huge draw during the hot summer months.

Though Great America can really draw a crowd during peak times when kids are enjoying their summer vacations, previous guests have noted that wait times for rides weren’t overly long.

Many families choose to spend an entire day on-site to avoid wasting valuable recreational time in the car.

8. Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara is one of the city’s premier historic sites, and it’s now conveniently located on the campus of Santa Clara University.

The mission was established by Franciscans in the 1770s to spread Christianity to the area’s Native American population.

Sadly, things didn’t go according to plan; due to several natural disasters, the mission was forced to move from its original site to where it is now.

Over the years, it was also run by the Jesuits. Though it’s no longer functioning in its original role, it now doubles as a museum and chapel that are open to visitors.

9. The Triton Museum of Art

Triton Museum of Art

Though guests tend to visit the Triton Museum of Art for the works in its collection, its stunning contemporary architecture usually makes a big impression as well.

The museum’s collection includes works from all over the country, but its emphasis is on pieces created by Bay Area artists using local people and scenery as inspiration.

The grounds also include a sprawling outdoor sculpture garden spread over nearly seven acres, and a home from the mid-1860s that’s among the most well-preserved examples of historic American architecture in the area.

The museum is located on Warburton Avenue, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site.

10. Santa Clara Players

The Santa Clara Players traces its roots all the way back to the early ‘60s, when a group of local performers began putting on small shows for the community.

Now nearly seven decades later, they’re still going strong. Their annual performances run the gamut from dramatic theater and mystery to satire and humor.

The players are part of a community theater group staffed by talented volunteers dedicated to providing high-quality, family-friendly entertainment at a reasonable cost.

They’re located on Don Avenue in Santa Clara and offer lots of volunteer opportunities for budding actors and stagehands.

11. Central Park

Santa Clara Central Park

Featuring lots of wide-open spaces and massive swimming and community rec centers, Santa Clara’s Central Park is a go-to destination for activity minded visitors looking to make the most of their limited vacation time without traveling to more distant attractions.

The park is centrally located on Keily Boulevard, has ample parking, and features lots of outdoor amenities and recreational activity options.

From tennis and basketball to softball, lawn bowling, and a big playground, there’s really no excuse for getting bored while on-site. For those looking to spend a relaxing afternoon, there are a lake, built-in BBQs, and public restrooms.

12. The 49ers Museum

49ers Museum Located In The Levi’s Stadium

Even for those who won’t be in Santa Clara during the regular season, the 49ers stadium and museum are fun attractions worth visiting for sports-minded visitors.

The museum is located inside Levi’s Stadium and features nearly a dozen distinct galleries that are open to the public year-round.

It’s a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. In addition to football, its exhibits touch on science, technology, and art in a way that engages and entertains young and old minds alike.

Most guests check out the introductory video in the visitor’s center before showing themselves through the impressive collection of trophies, balls, and Super Bowl memorabilia on display.

13. The Santa Clara Fire Museum

Santa Clara Fire Museum

The Santa Clara Fire Department’s roots run all the way back to the 1850s when it was founded.

The museum is now located on Walsh Avenue in an unused training center behind the city’s new fire station.

It sports an impressive collection of equipment and historical memorabilia that give visitors unique insights into the lives of fire and rescue personnel in years past.

The museum’s highlights include a fully restored Model-T fire truck that served for two decades, beginning in the 1920s.

The knowledgeable local volunteer staff also offer regular programs geared at educating the public about fire safety and prevention issues.

14. Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History

Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History

The Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History is run by a local historical society. It is housed in the depot of a now-defunct railroad on Railroad Avenue in Santa Clara.

Like many local historical attractions, the museum is staffed by local volunteers who love answering questions and showing first-time visitors around.

The museum’s exhibits include a variety of railroad equipment and memorabilia, including signals, safety equipment, and historical photographs dating back over 100 years.

The museum is regularly open to the public. It maintains an extensive library of books relating to railroad development and local history as well.

15. Voyager Coffee

Voyager Coffee, Santa Clara

Though it has only been around since 2016, Voyager Coffee’s owner and staff are dedicated to the noble pursuit of making their customers happy.

They do this largely by providing world-class coffee, but also by offering a comfortable space in which guests have opportunities to build relationships with like-minded customers.

Many of their coffees sport internationally influenced flavors, and they’re often infused with things like orange essence and cherry blossom water.

Don’t worry if you prefer your coffee straight-up, because they’ve got more traditional brews as well.

They offer fresh pastry and baked goods, tea, and other non-coffee drinks too.

Michelin-lauded Lao restaurant Snackboxe Bistro closing in Doraville, Duluth location remains open

T he original location of Lao restaurant Snackboxe Bistro will close on Saturday, May 11, after six years at the Super H Mart complex in Doraville. The Duluth location, however, remains open and with a new menu.

Owners Thip Athakhanh and Vanh Sengaphone decided not to renew the lease in Doraville and will focus on their second location in Duluth. Athakhanh told Rough Draft they are working on a new menu for Duluth, which drops on Monday, May 13. New dishes include clams with garlic butter jeow som, crispy bang bang prawns, laap shrimp, and fried laap calamari.

Athakhanh and Sengaphone opened Snackboxe Bistro in 2018 at the Super H Mart shopping center off of Peachtree Road where it quickly gained an avid following and grabbed the attention of the local and national press. The restaurant’s menu mixes traditional Lao dishes like laap (ground meat salad), papaya salad, and khao poon (spicy rice noodle soup) with street foods such as lemongrass spare ribs and sausages served with a spicy sour dipping sauce call jeow som.

The couple opened the second location in Duluth two years ago on Day Drive. Look for the lemongrass spare ribs in Duluth, along with the return of shrimp ceviche, pork belly skewers, sukiyaki, and spam musubi on the weekends.

Athakhanh, born in Savannakhet in western Laos, immigrated to the United States with her family as a small child. Before they arrived in the U.S., the family lived in refugee camps, having fled Laos due to the civil war. Growing up in a big family, Athakhanh learned to cook many dishes served at Snackboxe Bistro from watching her aunts in the kitchen.

Prior to opening Snackboxe Bistro, Athakhanh worked as a planning manager for a solar company. She and Sengaphone spent a portion of their honeymoon in Laos in 2016. It was the first time Athakhanh had been back to the country since leaving with her family. The trip would ultimately set the wheels in motion to open Snackboxe Bistro.

In 2023, Michelin listed Snackboxe Bistro as a recommended restaurant in its inaugural dining guide Atlanta.

Take a look at the new menu for Duluth:
