The Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) has secured international film star Liam Neeson to be the voice of its latest TV advertising campaign in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The Ballymena-born acting legend, star of a string of blockbuster movies including Schindler’s List, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Taken, provides the unmistakable voice-over in the NITB’s new spring campaign, which starts today.

The actor’s voice champions the people of Northern Ireland, portraying their pride in the place they come from, and urges viewers to “discover the real deal” on short breaks.

Other famous faces also star in the campaign, including Derry~Londonderry actress and singer Bronagh Gallagher who is filmed showing Hothouse Flowers’ lead singer Liam Ó Maonlaí the delights the Walled City has to offer.

The TV ad features a mix of local characters and tour guides in some of Northern Ireland’s favourite destinations.

Liam Neeson, who last year was awarded the Freedom of Ballymena, said he was delighted to be involved in the campaign to promote Northern Ireland.

“I’ve always maintained that Northern Ireland is the world’s best kept secret, both in the character of its people and its scenery. I’m delighted to be part of this exciting campaign to promote the treasures of my home land.” he said.

Welcoming the start of the spring campaign, NITB Chief Executive, Alan Clarke, said: “Securing Liam Neeson to do the voiceover for our latest TV campaign is a huge coup and a significant vote of confidence in our tourism industry. This marks the first step of a brand new direction for NITB, which will focus on the friendliness of our people and their ability to make a place memorable. This is what our research is telling us is one of our greatest strengths. Liam Neeson’s voice is inimitable of course, and it glues the images of the TV ad smoothly together, encouraging viewers to take a short break in Northern Ireland and see the place in a whole new light.

Musician and actress, Bronagh Gallagher from Derry~Londonderry (1)

“We’re extremely proud that so many of our local people have supported the idea – from Liam Neeson and Bronagh Gallagher to our brilliant tour guides who promote Northern Ireland to our visitors every day.”

NITB believes the campaign will attract more visitors from the Republic of Ireland and continue to boost domestic tourism.

It will run from now until the end of March across a range of media including TV, radio, outdoor, press and online advertising as well as PR and promotions in key shopping centres.

The first ads will air this morning on UTV and Channel 5, followed by this evening at 7.15pm on UTV and 11pm on Channel 4.

In the Land of Saints and Sinners: Liam Neeson is a gruff, gunslinging hero in this Donegal western

Robert lorenz’s thriller, set in 1974, features kerry condon, ciarán hinds, niamh cusack and colm meaney in a parade of wasted ideas and characters.

There’s a decent transported western trying to shoot its way out of Robert Lorenz’s handsome Donegal-draped thriller. Who wouldn’t want to listen to older gunslingers Liam Neeson and Ciarán Hinds chat about Dostoevsky in a one-horse town? Who wouldn’t want to see a classic saloon shoot-out?

Sadly, real-world intrusions clash with the film’s mythical aspirations. Set in 1974, at the height of the Northern Ireland conflict, In the Land of Saints and Sinners opens in Belfast, where Doireann McCann (Kerry Condon) and several fellow operatives set off a car bomb that kills two children and their mother. She and her co-conspirators, including ne’er-do-well brother, Curtis, find a hideout in the coastal idyll of Glencolumbkille, where her sister-in-law lives.

Coincidentally, war veteran and occasional hitman Finbar Murphy (Neeson, playing gruff and soulful hero No 356) has also found refuge in the town. Following a folksy encounter with a victim, he decides to hang up his guns and live a nice, quiet life. “I could plant a garden,” he says, unconvincingly. The discovery that Curtis (Desmond Eastwood) has been sexually abusing a young local girl inevitably inspires another change of heart. It’s one U-turn too many in an already crowded picture.

[  Marlowe — Liam Neeson and a game cast mostly make something juicy of hard-boiled private-eye staples  ]

As pleasing as it is to encounter Colm Meaney (playing a local crime boss), Niamh Cusack (Neeson’s widowed love interest) and Jack Gleeson (Neeson’s protege), they form a parade of wasted ideas and characters who needed far more screen time and development.

Begorrah is commendably averted: Mark Michael McNally and Terry Loane’s screenplay ensures that the dialogue is authentic. Condon has fun as the avenging IRA harpy, even if the script’s convoluted account of her misplaced southern accent doesn’t ring true. Elegant drone shots add indelible images to an otherwise forgettable action film.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day With Liam Neeson As He Inspires Travel From Ireland to Brazil

"No matter where you are in the world, as long as you have a piece of Ireland in your heart, you are celebrating with us."

liam neeson northern ireland tourism

While celebrating St. Patrick's Day may look different this year, once again, Ireland is inviting revelers to celebrate with famed local, Liam Neeson.

The actor, from Northern Ireland, lent his iconic voice to a Tourism Ireland video, narrating both breathtaking and familiar scenes of his home country — from the bustle of The Temple Bar in Dublin to the stately castles throughout the countryside.

"This year, more than ever, seeing the world turn green for St. Patrick's Day will help to bring positivity and hope to millions on 17 March," Neeson said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . "I'm delighted to work with Tourism Ireland on this movie which will act as a reminder of the beautiful island that awaits when it is safe to travel again."

In the video, Neeson highlights St. Patrick's Day celebrations around the world — from Italy and Las Vegas to Rio de Janeiro.

"It's a testament to the renounced Irish spirit, the spirit that has spread to every corner of the globe," Neeson said in the video. "So however you mark the occasion, always remember that no matter where you are in the world, as long as you have a piece of Ireland in your heart, you are celebrating with us. Happy St. Patrick's Day."

Niall Gibbons, the CEO of Tourism Ireland, told T+L in a statement the video allows the country to "keep the island of Ireland to the fore in a positive light, on the day when people everywhere are thinking about Ireland."

While the 2021 celebration will certainly be different — COVID-19 has forced the festivities online for the second year in a row — there are plenty of ways to celebrate without leaving home.

Tune in for the 90-minute St. Patrick's Day at Home broadcast on March 17, complete with Celtic drummers in Dublin, Shamrock Tenors from Belfast, and a lesson on how to pour the perfect pint of Guinness.

Or take your beer and tour the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin before taking a "walk" through the massive library at Trinity College.

And when you're ready to start planning a trip in person , make sure to include the 82-mile St. Patrick's Way on your itinerary, moving through the parks of Northern Ireland.

Liam Neeson Says New Film Allowed Him to 'Indulge in One's Own Irishness'

  • Set in 1974 Northern Ireland, In the Land of Saints and Sinners explores ethical dilemmas during violent escalations in the fight for independence. Liam Neeson remembers those times.
  • The film stars Neeson and Kerry Condon, offering a gripping portrayal of moral ambiguity within the human condition.
  • Neeson praises Condon as a strong actress, highlighting their first-time collaboration in this visually stunning film.

It doesn't get much more Irish than In the Land of Saints and Sinners , a visually gorgeous and ethically ambiguous new film from director Robert Lorenz ( Trouble with the Curve ). The movie, set in Northern Ireland circa 1974, stars Liam Neeson , Kerry Condon, Jack Gleeson, Colm Meaney, Ciarán Hinds, Sarah Greene, Conor MacNeill, Niamh Cusack, and more, as people whose lives become deeply intertwined in Glencolmcille, a coastal town seemingly safe from the political violence involved in the fight for a free Ireland. Except Neeson's character, Finbar Murphy, has been hiding his violent profession as a hitman .

One of Finbar's hits, however, is a member of a radical section of the I.R.A. , who then go looking for their disappeared comrade, threatening Finbar's life and friendly neighbors. An ethical dilemma follows suit, with the film using The Troubles as a backdrop to quietly study the moral ambivalence of the human condition.

"It's set in the '70s," explained Neeson. " I grew up there, surrounded by violence . I was never a part of it, but I was always surrounded by it. So it was interesting to play a piece of 'entertainment' based on those Troubles, as they were euphemistically known as. And to get a chance to work with Ciaran Hinds — I've known Ciaran for 50 years, we're very close friends. And Colm Meaney, I've known Colm for 40 years, we've done a couple of plays together in Ireland in the old days." Neeson added:

So that was lovely and comfortable to be with Irish colleagues again, and just to be able to indulge in one's own Irishness, with the basis of a very good script. I thought it was a terrific script.

Alongside Neeson and other aforementioned actors, Kerry Condon has slowly become one of the greatest Irish performers of our time. She has starred in some of the best Irish films of the past 25 years, including Angela's Ashes, Intermission , and The Banshees of Inisherin , along with voicing F.R.I.D.A.Y. in the MCU and giving great performances in films like This Must Be the Place and Unleashed . This is surprisingly the first time that Neeson and Condon have worked together, and Neeson had nothing but praise:

She was terrific. I didn't know Kerry at all. I had seen her in The Banshees of Inisherin, the Martin McDonagh film, which I admired very much. Kerry's terrific, she's such a strong actress. And a good laugh, too.

The production of In the Land of Saints and Sinners found the cast and crew living together on location in the beautiful coastal area. "I shared a house with Ciaran, and it was lovely," explained Neeson. "We were all kind of close by in various little houses, with the magnificent Atlantic Ocean right there."

You can see the beautiful locations and Neeson's soulful performance when In the Land of Saints and Sinners is released March 29 from Samuel Goldwyn Films.

The 70-year-old Northern Irish actor was speaking to Sky’s Beth Rigby Interviews... programme ahead of the release of his 100th movie, the detective film Marlowe , when he made the comments.

Speaking about the prospect of a united Ireland, he said: “I think it will happen, but, you know, everybody has to be appeased.

“The Protestants in the North of Ireland have a strong voice. I hear them, I know where they’re coming from, and they have to be respected.

“If there’s going to be a united Ireland, their voice has to be heard and they have to be represented, if a united Ireland comes about.”

Neeson was brought up a Catholic in Ballymena and began his acting career on stage in Northern Ireland, performing during The Troubles – the violent, decades-long sectarian conflict that raged in the country.

He reflected on how dangerous it was in Northern Ireland during those years, saying: “There were a couple of nights where the theatre would get a telephone call to be told there’s a bomb, and we’d have to go out onto the street with the audience, and the soldiers came in and searched, and maybe an hour I say, OK, you can go back in again.”

The actor also said the 1998 Good Friday Agreement – a milestone in bringing an end to The Troubles and the anniversary of which falls next month on 10 April – was “an extraordinary achievement”.

Marlowe , out in the UK today, sees Neeson play a down-on-his-luck detective hired to find the ex-lover of an heiress in LA.

Liam Neeson is to front a new tourism campaign for his hometown of Ballymena in Northern Ireland to give the region a boost amid rising unemployment.

The 'Taken' star grew up in the area, which is set to be blighted by job losses after two of the region's biggest employers announced plans to close their plants.

When informed of the decision to close the Michelin tire factory late last year, Neeson called the move "tragic", and it has now emerged he has agreed to help out by fronting a tourism campaign for the region.

Neeson has agreed to appear in a series of adverts to help attract more tourists to the region around Ballymena.

Mid and East Antrim mayor Billy Ashe explained the plan during a local council meeting, saying, "He has agreed to work along with (tourist board) Tourism NI and the council to shoot a special advertisement featuring areas back home... and has agreed to appear on camera."

The actor, who is now an American citizen, was previously honoured in his hometown in 2013 when he was presented with the Freedom of the Borough.

Did Liam Neeson's sex traffic thriller 'Taken' scare the pants off you? You're not alone. The film, which sees Neeson play a concerned dad hunting down the sex traffickers who abducted his daughter in Paris, was a huge hit. But with anxious parents, not so much. "I have parents coming up to me to say, I'm never sending my children to Europe," the brooding Irish actor told The Star this week. Rattled by the film's theme and Neeson's performance, they're thinking twice about allowing their kids out of their sight. Neeson said this unexpected reaction is the one thing he regrets about the film because he thinks its important for American kids to travel and see the world. "The youth have to travel. Please get your daughter and your son a passport and sent them out there," Neeson pleaded.
