Lisa Loeb (born March 11, 1968) is an American contemporary folk and rock singer-songwriter and musician, hailing from Dallas, Texas, U.S.

Raised in the heart of Dallas, Texas, with her three musically-orientated siblings, Lisa Loeb’s first excursion to the creative was playing the piano and guitar as a child. After subsequently hosting on the St. Marks School FM Station 88.5 KRSM, Loeb studied comparative literature at Brown University, where she formed the band Liz and Lisa alongside Elizabeth Mitchell. The duo released a pair of independent albums “Liz and Lisa” (1989) and “Days Were Different” (1990), before going separate ways after college. In 1990 the singer-songwriter formed the band Nine Stories and produced the cassette tape “Purple Tape” in 1992 featuring the tracks “Do You Sleep?”, “Snow Day”, and Loeb’s own “Stay (I Missed You)”.

Through her friendship with actor Ethan Hawke, Loeb’s single “Stay (I Missed You)” became the accompaniment to the credits of the Ben Stiller film “Reality Bites” in 1994. Subsequently, the single topped the Billboard 200, making Loeb the first unsigned artist to reached the No. 1 spot. With the success of the single Loeb released her full-length debut “Tails” in September 1995. Featuring the singles “Stay”, “Do You Sleep?”, and “Taffy”, the album earned positive reviews from critics, and was produced by Loeb’s partner Juan Patiño.

The singer-songwriter’s sophomore release “Firecrackers” appeared in 1997, which despite earning less favourable reviews from the musical press, earned a Grammy-nomination for Best Engineered Non-Classical Album. Following the release Loeb toured alongside The Wallflowers, Chris Isaak, and Lilith Fair. “Cake and Pie”, the singer’s third, however her debut on A&M/Interscope, featured collaborations with Glen Ballard, however proved a commercial failure due to lack of promotion. Loeb subsequently contributed “Goodbye to Romance” to the Ozzy Osbourne tribute album, “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” to the Cher tribute album, and “Don’t Be Stupid” to the Shania Twain tribute album.

Loeb released her fourth full-length “Catch the Moon” in 2003, and following a move to the independent Zoë/Rounder Records, released “The Way It Really Is” in 2004. The latter album, despite disappointing sales, showcased a more developed singer with a more mature approach to songwriting. In 2008 Loeb took a greater diversion into children themed music with the album “Camp Lisa”, which is a 19-track album of camp songs including the memorable “Peanut Butter & Jelly”.

Live reviews

The first time I saw Lisa Loeb play was around 1993 and it was at the very beginning of her career! The song "Stay" had just hit the radio, people didn't really know who she was, but the song was getting popular! I had become a big fan quickly and I saw an add in the local music concert paper announcing a concert date and picked up my tickets right away! I had 2 other friends that were interested and joined in as well.

Lisa was playing in a super tiny club on a stage the size of a dining room table. I would guess there were at the most 200 people in the audience and that allowed me to go back and forth from front row center stage or to mingle in the middle anytime I wanted! It was perfect and I will forever be happy that I got to see her for the first time in such a small and intimate setting with so few people in the crowd! Lisa actually seemed nervous on stage, with her quirky smile and glasses, she would fumble with her words in between songs talking to the audience. It was actually such a beautiful event to look at now, as she has become so popular and done so much since! She only played for about an hour as she still only had 1 album completed, but she played with heart and soul and her performance was truly wonderful! Although she may have acted nervous in between songs, once she strummed the first note of a song, the nervousness disappeared and she played and sang from the soul! I still feel luck to this day that I got to experience that and still have an autographed picture she signed for me after the show!!

Great show, lots of fun. Lisa was fantastic! Her voice is better in person than recorded, which isn't true of most artists. Enjoyed it a lot! First exposure for my kids. Really enjoyed the song she made for a new movie (have to remember what it is) but I want the song!

The show was excellent. Lisa was very personable with the audience. She is definitely a very talented musician and an outstanding storyteller. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and would definitely she Lisa perform again, especially in an acoustic setting like this.

“This new bundle of performers is an exciting piece of our live programming for 2024, forming a showcase of singer-songwriter stars Ben Folds, Suzanne Vega, and the very special union of Lyle Lovett and Lisa Loeb,” Mahaiwe Executive Director Janis Martinson said in a news release. “Keb’ Mo’ shines in his own right as the Grammy-winning powerhouse and blues fixture he is, and BoDeans offer a night of exhilarating rock.”

Tickets, unless noted, are available online at mahaiwe.org or through the box office, 14 Castle St., either in person or by calling 413-528-0100. The box office is open noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Member discounts and pricing for individuals 30 and under are available.

LYLE LOVETT AND LISA LOEB

Lovett and Loeb will appear together 6 p.m. May 10 in a special collaboration, " Lyle Lovett and Lisa Loeb: In Conversation and Song ." Tickets are $75 to $125 and go on sale at noon March 13.

A singer, composer and actor, Lovett fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner since his self-titled debut in 1986.  Besides his four Grammy Awards and a total of 18 nominations, he was given the Americana Music Association's inaugural Trailblazer Award and was named Texas State Musician.

A Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, Loeb started her career with the platinum-selling Number 1 hit song “Stay (I Missed You)” from the film "Reality Bites." She was the first pop musician to have a No. 1 single while not signed to a recording contract.

Founded and led by original frontman, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Kurt Neumann, BoDeans will perform 8 p.m. May 25. Tickets are $33 to $43.

BoDeans emerged out of Waukesha, Wis., in 1986 with the seminal debut, "Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams," produced by T Bone Burnett. With a sought-after discography, their music landed hundreds of television and film placements. Meanwhile, they transformed into a proven live phenomenon by supporting the likes of U2, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Tom Petty, The Pretenders, and David Bowie in addition to gracing the bills of Farm Aid, Summerfest and ACL. Speaking to the group’s legacy, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame permanently enshrined BoDeans in the Midwest Artists exhibit.

Blues guitarist and vocalist Keb’ Mo’ will appear on the Mahaiwe stage 8 p.m. June 15. Tickets are $45 to $95 and go on sale at noon March 13.

Keb’ Mo’s musical journey began at 21, nearly half a century ago, when he landed his first major gig in Papa John Creach’s band. Over the course of the next 20 years, the musician would go on to establish himself as a respected guitarist, songwriter and arranger, but it wasn’t until 1994 that he would introduce the world to Keb’ Mo’ with the release of his widely-acclaimed self-titled debut. In the decades to come, Mo’ would take home five Grammy Awards; top the Billboard Blues Chart seven times; perform everywhere from Carnegie Hall to The White House; and collaborate with many, including Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, The Chicks, and Lyle Lovett. He was was given Americana Music Association’s 2021 award for Lifetime Achievement in Performance.

Folds brings his " Paper Airplane Request Tour ” to the Mahaiwe 8 p.m. June 22. Tickets are $65 to $120.

What initially began years ago as a request for songs as encores will once again be a central element in Folds’ shows when he engages audiences to make their song requests via paper airplanes.

“The last time I did this on tour the response was overwhelming, with literally hundreds of paper airplanes with song requests being launched on cue from fans at the start of the second half of each of my concerts,”  Folds said in a release. “It’s the purest, most low-tech form of engagement that creates a special bond with my audiences."

Born and raised in North Carolina, Folds first rose to fame in the mid-’90s with Ben Folds Five, whose acerbic, genre-bending take on piano pop helped define an entire era of alternative rock. Folds launched his solo career in 2001. For the past three decades, he's toured as a pop artist, while also performing with some of the world's greatest symphony orchestras.

A New York Times Best Selling author and podcast host, Ben also composes for film, tv and theatre, guest stars in films and TV, and serves as the artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

SUZANNE VEGA

Vega, widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation, comes to the Mahaiwe 8 p.m. Oct. 5 . She'll be joined on stage by her longtime guitarist, Gerry Leonard, performing a career-spanning show including favorites like “Tom’s Diner,” “Luka” and more. Tickets are $34 to $59. VIP packages are $90 to $195.

A leading figure of the folk revival of the early 1980s, Vega sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known venues.
