Malana Trek: A Democratic “High”

“Are you Rajput?”… asked the old man. We were barely half way through. Our city bred and pollution-fed constitutions were on the verge of breaking down. After three hours through steep wilderness and gradual realization of the folly of not carrying a water bottle, we’d finally located a wooden house with a living person at the doorstep. I personally expected the usual hospitality I often find in the hills. But all he was bothered about was whether the travellers belonged to the same caste as him. Although none of us were, Hilly said yes, went in and had water. I preferred to be less pragmatic and choose to wait for other options.

Jump to Specific Queries

Myths, Rumours and things that must not be named:

Let me just go back in time a bit and reach a more conventional starting point. I was in the Parvati Valley with Hilly, who came to visit the hills all the way from Bombay (OK OK Mumbai!). The idea was to relax for a few days, mingle with the hippies and look for certain materials that this region is known for (but which must not be named). We were planning to use Kasol as the base but even before reaching there, we decided to do away with the Malana trek first. It seemed the more hectic part and so after this we expected to catch some well-deserved break at Kasol.

Now, there are many stories surrounding Malana. Some of them may be real and some others mere myths. According to the most popular myth, they were the remnants of Greeks who came with Alexander, just like the Kalash. I have not seen any conclusive studies proving the same. The people out there did have some hints of exotic genes in their looks, but I did not really notice any significant traits. Besides, they generally claim to be Rajputs.

The other popular story here is that of Malana being one of the oldest “democracies”. This is a more convincing one. Basically it used to be a secluded village until recently. They were never a part of any kingdom and never paid taxes even to the Brits. From what I understood, modern amenities have also reached the village fairly recently. New roads have made the approach a bit easier but it still takes several hours of trekking. Are they living fossils giving us a glimpse of the ancient pre-Mauryan republics? I do not know.

As for the stuff that must not be named, Malana is well known for cultivating the same. From random shepherds on the trek to village children higher up, everybody offered to sell us the same.

Choosing the Longer Path:

We were told that there are two approaches to the village. We were not sure about the availability of buses but we figured out that there are shared cars from Jari, a small settlement 10 kms before Kasol. We spent the night at an ancient wooden building turned a budget guesthouse at Jari. In the morning we found a car whose driver was already rolling a joint at 7 in the morning! Anyways, he gave us two options. The nearer entry point costs INR 300 per head but the trek from there are much longer and difficult. The other option would cost INR 500 per head but leave us at a point from where the trek is much shorter and well-marked with no obstacles. We chose the more difficult option. Whether it was due to our hard working nature or our poverty is anybody’s guess.

Not quite the spring:

The driver lit the rolled joint and started the car. He was generous enough to share the same and so the car as well as its passengers achieved various “altitudes” as we moved on. After around 30 minutes of driving, he suddenly stopped and pointed out to a narrow and steep path on the left side of the road. Some villagers had just descended through the same path. They told us that it will take around an hour. They seriously overestimated us!

It was March and the lower valleys were blooming with spring colours. But slightly higher reaches leading up to Malana were still dry and sleepy. We crossed the streams whose banks were lined with naked trees and grey rocks. Initial steep climb led to a flatter portion which again led to a steeper stretch. After around two hours, we met the aforementioned person. I thought we can quickly climb up the rest of the hill and get refreshments. But I was wrong!

The end of the road… almost!

As we climbed higher, traces of snow became visible. Winter was firmly on here. After some difficult climbing, we reached a spot where there was no path remaining. There was a stretch of very soft and slippery slope with thick snow (in fact it was brittle ice). It is in fact the same stream we had crossed earlier. At that height, the surface was not only frozen but almost vertically inclined. We could see the trail on the other side and a safer option was to climb down, cross the stream at a safer location and climb up again. But we were too tired for all that. We saw sheep and goats walk down those slopes effortlessly but weren’t sure if we could do the same. We hesitated and for some moments even considered giving up. But finally we just decided to take the risk. We had to literally crawl to avoid slipping and fall off several feet below. It was the riskiest 15 feets of our lives but we managed it!

After that crossing the path was clear. We met a few local women carrying (most probably) firewood. They pointed towards a transmission tower at the top and asked us to keep walking towards that. After a while, we finally reached the top and found that it was a completely different world. While we had seen scattered stretches of snow along the trek, the village was completely covered in thick snow altogether. More importantly, we’d arrived from the wrong direction. Main village was on the other side of the plane and we still had to traverse some uncomfortable yards. I slipped several times and then finally stepped on some soft ice and started downing like one does in quicksand. Finally when I stopped, I was buried till my waist. I pulled myself out with my bare hands and the palms pained due to sheer connection with sub-zero material. Thankfully that sensation did not last long. It took half an hour just to cover those final yards and enter the village, only to find children asking whether we need “stuff”. I gulped some of the ice flakes out of thirst. After meandering through the village for a while, one person asked what we were looking for (As it turned out he was also hoping to sell his “stuff”). But we were too exhausted, famished and thirsty for such fancy things and so asked him if there was any restaurant available.

Harish Thakur:

Jamlu rishi:.

After the food, we felt better but it was time to leave. So we decided to take a short stroll around the village. The main deity here seemed to be Jamlu Rishi or Jamadagni, Parashuram’s father. Architecture of the wooden houses seemed unique but I lack the expertise to comment too much on the same. The temple however seemed newly constructed. We also noticed the famed signboards warning visitors against touching the villagers or photographing them. But I guess they are mostly lenient about these rules now.

The Descent:

We took the other route for our descent. There were no roadblocks here. Some other trekkers were coming towards the village, so it seemed to be the more popular route. It did not take much time and effort and at the end there was a shop by the side of the motorable road, further indicating that it was the main entrance used by travellers. We joined some other people on shared a car, thus paying only INR 200 per head and reached Jari before dark. We’d evacuated our rooms in the morning but had left our luggage at the guest house. So we collected the same and then took an evening bus to Kasol, which was 10 kms further up the valley. I’ll be back with that story in a day or two.

Malana Travel Guide

Here is everything you need to know, in order to visit Malana, which involves some travel along the hilly roads and a short trek at the end.

parvati valley trekking map

What and where on Earth is Malana?

It is a secluded village situated somewhere in the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Nearest major towns are Bhuntar and Kasol. Altitude is around 2600 meters according to my map and even 3000 meters according to some other sources.

Why is Malana Famous?

Its secluded nature is the reason for its fame. There are various myths regarding the origin of the people and they remained a secluded society for a long time without paying taxes to any of the rulers of India. They have unique language, culture, traditions and even unique genes if some myths are to be believed. More importantly, the area is famous for the high quality cannabis crops that naturally grow here. However, do note that it is not exactly legal and although people may approach you all the time ti sell it.

How to Reach Malana?

Malana is around 16 KMs from a small roadside village called Jari, and 22 KMs from Kasol. Jari is one the Bhunter-Kasol Road. Bhunter also has the airport, which serves Kullu-Manali, as well as Parvati region. From Jari or Kasol, you can find local cabs to take you to the trekking points of Malana.

Airports near Malana?

Bhunter airport is not far from here. It is the airport that serves Kullu district and is connected to Delhi. From there, you can find buses and cabs to go to various parts of Kasol/Parvati Valley.

Are there buses to Malana?

I have noticed a bus from Bhunter to Malana at the bus stand. It surely can’t go up to the village but it can also leave you at the beginning point of the trek at a negligible cost. However, I am not sure about the timing. You can ask around at the Bhunter bus stand. I have NOT seen any bus on the Kasol to Bhunter route.  ( Try to spot the places in the MAP above to understand the routes ).

Kasol to Malana

As you can see from the map above, from Kasol, you will have to come back to Jari and then take a detour to Malana. In fact, I think, it is better to do Malana first, and then go to Kasol the next day.

Hiring Cabs to Malana from Kasol or Jari?

You can get cabs from Kasol to Malana trekking point via Jari. But I guess that will cost a lot. So, I suggest you take a local bus and come down a few KMs to Jari, which is the maint taxi station for Malana. Even Jari to Malana dropping now costs INR 850 per car! It used to be much cheaper but the system has been unionized with the increasing tourist flow. It is now hard for solo and budget travellers. Your best option is to gather 4-5 people to share the costs.

Malana to Jari and Kasol return?

If you are not having your own vehicle or hiring a vehicle for the round trip (which can be really expensive), you come back to the road after visiting the village by repeateing the same trek. Tourist cabs wait there hoping for clients. You can also bargain here and can get it at a cheaper rate compared to the starting rates at Jari. But don’t wait until th eevening because in that case you may get stuck. Once I even got a lifet for free while coming back. Your primary goal is the return to Jari, because from Jari you will get the buses to Kasol.

Trek Routes to Malana

Eventually Malana is a trek. From where the cab or bus will drop you, you will have to do a short trek to the village. However,  here are actually two routes for the same.

Malana Short Trek from the Front

This is what most people do. This is the famous entry pont of Malana, whose photographs you may have seen before. It is around 16 KMs from Jari. From here, you first go down to the base of the river, cross a small bridge, and go up again to reach the village. It is a mostly easy 1.5 Kms trek and takes anything between 30 mins to 1 Hr depending on your stamina.

If you don’t specify, most cabs will also drop you here only.

Malana Long Trek from Back Side

Most people don’t know about this route but this is what we took. It is steeper and you emerge at Malana from the back side. The entry point is somewhere before the other point. Keep an eye on the left side of the road for this one as you may miss it if you drive past too fast. I felt it was at least 2-3 KMs and took 1.5 Hrs. However, we did it in March, when the route was still covered in snow. It may be easier in the summer.

Malana Village Trek Distance

The short and easy route is barely 1.5-2 KMs long. It involves a descent, followed by an ascent. The longer alternative route may be 2-2.5 KMs long but much steeper.

Malana Trekking Time

As mentioned before, the shorter route should take no more than an hour even for teh slowest trekker. The lesser-known, alternative route is steeper and longer, and can take up to 2 hours.

How difficult is the Malana trek?

The shorter route is pretty easy. Longer one from the back side is of moderate difficulty and at some points the path may be broken. Carry some water with you.

Where to Stay in Malana?

Earlier you could stay in the village. However, it was banned in 2017. So, now you can not have a night stay, although you can visit. However, you can stay in some of the shacks on teh route, just outsid the village, and also at nearby campsites in Waichin Valley. Read my post about Malana Tourist Restrictions for more details.

Are there any restaurants in Malana?

Yes, there are some basic eateries in Malana where you can rejuvenate yourself after the trek. So, food will not be a problem.

What is the best season for Malana?

It can be done all the time. It was March but was still under several feet deep snow. Later on I visited it once in June and it was green and clear. So, summers and post monsoon seasons will be nice. Avoid the slippery rainy season.

Malana Do’s and Don’ts

Be careful in Malana due to its eccentric customs and restrictions.

  • Do not touch the local people.
  • Be careful while photographing. You can click landscapes but ask permission before clicking local people or temples.
  • In general be respectful during the interaction with the locals.

What else can one do at Malana?

One can go to something called “Magic Valley” (Mozik Valley) and Waichin Valley, which is another pristine meadow a few KMs ahead of Malana along the same route. If you have time, you can also trek over the Chadrakhani Pass and move over to the other side and reach Naggar. But you will need guides and equipment for the trek. It is also possible to trek to Rashol, another high village in the valley. But we trekked to Rashol separately from Kasol a couple of days later.

Read the Parvati Valley Travel Guide for more details about this region.

hello again

i am a little confused.. the longer route is the safer one? or the one where you encountered the frozen stream?

also, is having a guide necessary? or are the paths more or less self explanatory if one has a moderate sense of direction? 😐 thanks 🙂

' src=

Thanks for your comment Sanchari… There are two paths… shorter one is quite simple… the longer one that we took may offer you a few challenges but you will always find some local villager to ask…

okay confusion solved. reread 😛

Hi, I went there last March and it was still half buried in snow. So, I am not sure if all the facilities will be fully functional.

So, I suggest you go early in the morning so that you have time to be back, in case you do find a place.

' src=

It will be cold and the village will be buried in snow as you can see from this travelogue which was also done in March. Buses are not there or are rare in this route. You will get shared car from Kasol to the trekking point.

Hii, i want to ask one thing more that how much time it will take to reach from kasol to jari? And instead of going to kasol can we stay in jari is there any good resort or something will be possible or not to stay for a night so that we can leave for trek on next morning?? Thanks…

You will cross Jari anyways… Please read the blog post… especially the section at the end… its all there…

Its informative…but we two friends wanted to go for 3day treck packages where we need a guide..do u kno how much they charge for such treks?nd where can i get the guides? Its my 1st time of trekking..fingers crossed….thanks

You will find guides in Kasol town as far as I know… although I do not think you need them for small day treks… I know for the first time you will have doubts but the anxiety is also a part of the game…

' src=

Thanks for the details bro, wanted to knw a couple of thing:

– Kheerganga trek – where to start from and how much time would it take.

– Rashol trek – whr to start and time thatbit will take.

Rashol trek starts from Kasol itself. If you know Chalal, then it is the same route, you just keep going upwards. You can return on the same day. (I also have a travelogue on it, have you seen it?)

Kheerganga starts a bit ahead of Kasol. I have not done it but I think you get bus till Barsheni and then start it. You can stay there at night and come down the next day.

You sank until your waist?? It’s lucky you are still young and strong enough to pull yourself out. What an adventure!

' src=

Would absolutely love to do this hike one day! It sounds like such an incredible experience!

' src=

Wow. I am very impressed that you guys finished that 2-5 hour hike. Looks intense. The view is amazing thoughand I think it’s reallycool that this might be the oldest democracy. I would have to pass on the styff that must not be named though. Not my rthing but great article.

' src=

I’ve hiked longer hikes before but never in the snow so imagine it would be much more difficult and challenging, very rewarding experience though especially at the top!

' src=

The hike looks very intense and I commend you for completing it, especially in the snow! Thanks for sharing your stunning photos from the experience.

' src=

It is so interesting to read about other people’s adventures that I would never probably engage in myself. The hike really looks hard, I am not sure I would dare to try. Great photos!

' src=

Wow! This seriously sounds like an incredible, one-of-a-kind experience! I’m also impressed by how easily mountain goats can scale cliffs and steep mountainsides, and just run freely.

' src=

It’s crazy because the Malana trek looks so similar to the area I live in, even though it’s half way around the world. It blows me away! Looked like it was a beautiful hike!

' src=

Super interesting read! Must have been a tough time but very cool 🙂

I believe this is my first time to your corner of the interwebs but I was blown away! Comprehensive post with beautiful storytelling and imagery!

The majestic mountains of Himachal Pradesh hold innumerable secrets. One such secret is the mysterious village of Malana. Located in Parvati Valley, the village is unlike any other place in the world. It is believed that the natives of this village are the descendants of Alexander the Great’s soldiers. The uniqueness is evident from the lifestyle and social structure of the village inhabitants. They have their own village administration that is supposedly the oldest republic in the world. Malanis are extremely proud of their culture and do not like to mingle with outsiders. In fact, physical contact with the people or their properties is strictly prohibited. The beauty of Malana lies in the fact that it is untouched by pollution and urbanization, having preserved its cultural and natural identity. The pristine rivers and the valleys form an entire world on its own, far away from the pollution and the hustle and bustle of urban India. The economy of this village is solely dependent on tourism and the trade of locally-grown hashish, known as ‘Malana Cream’.

The 21 KM trek to Malana will start at the base camp in the village of Kasol. Located along the spectacular Parvati River, this enchanting village lies high in the hills and is extremely popular among western backpackers, especially Israelis. Hence, it is also known as ‘mini Israel of India’. However, the village is slowly gaining recognition among Indians too. Young tourists will find no dearth of options to explore in Kasol, as there are plenty of bars, cafes, and restaurants to hang out. You can try your hand at Israeli cuisine – start with Chicken shipudim (skewers). Summertime in Kasol is replete with trance parties and music events. Kasol and its nearby areas also have their fair share of interesting tourist attractions. Some of them are Parvati River, Manikaran Gurudwara and Tosh village.

This 2-day trek from Kasol and Malana would be the perfect way to engage the adventurer in you. Take in the sights and sounds of these hill stations and learn about their unique culture and traditions. Make wonderful memories and capture those moments on camera. There is nothing better than a quiet retreat in the hills, away from the woes of your daily life.

Day 1: Kasol - Malana | 2-3 hours | 8701 feet Your journey to Kasol will start on this day. If you are traveling by road, you need to board an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi the night before, followed by a local taxi or bus ride from Bhuntar to reach Kasol. The other option is to take a train to Ambala or Chandigarh and then board a Volvo bus to Bhuntar. Kasol is a small village that is blessed with nature’s bounty. You should reach the base camp in Kasol before 11:00 AM. From here, transfer to the starting point of the trek and proceed towards the mysterious Malana village, 21 km away. The trek will take you amidst wild and untamed routes, through dense forests and lush valleys. When you reach Malana, rest for a while and prepare for an exciting night camping experience, followed by a scrumptious dinner.

Day 2: Malana - Kasol In the morning, check out from the camp at Malana after having a delicious breakfast. Start your descent back to the base camp in Kasol. On reaching Kasol, rest for a while and by evening, head back to your destination back home, via your preferred mode of transportation. If you are traveling to Delhi by bus, it is advised that you leave by noon, as bus delays are frequent in this region.

Kasol Travel Guide

For a long time, Kasol has been famous more for its trance parties and hippie culture. In fact, when we planned a visit here in 2016, the first thing that people asked us was if we were into weed. Because apparently, you only visited Kasol to get high and party.

However, it is safe to say that it definitely wasn’t our main aim to visit the Parvati Valley . We visited Kasol because we had read about the beautiful mountains and the magnificent river Parvati. Sure, it is a stoner’s paradise b ut this place is more than just a place to get stoned. It is a place where you can finally unravel your wings and experience the beauty of Mother Nature in all its glory.

Kasol to Kheerganga

Kasol is the ultimate place to witness the charms of the valley and the grandness of the mountains and you don’t need to get high to experience that.

Surrounded by so many beautiful places, one can easily plan a trip from Kasol to Tosh, Malana, Manikaran, etc. So if you want to get lost in the unknowns and witness the overwhelming beauty of the mountains, then Kasol is the place for you.

In this article, we have mentioned all the information that you need to plan a successful visit to this gorgeous location. And it won’t cost you more than 5000 INR for a long weekend. How to Reach Kasol

Now you might wonder how to reach Kasol and then these other mind-blowing places. Worry not, we are going to cover that too. Ideally, there are multiple ways to reach this popular Himachal destination.

The closest airport to Kasol is the Bhuntar airport at a distance of approximately 32 km. There are regular flights from Delhi and Chandigarh to Bhuntar so you can reach from any of those two cities. If you are planning a Delhi to Kasol trip and don’t want to waste time on the road, then taking a flight is a good option.

From Bhuntar, you will get a bus to Kasol for 80 – 100 INR which will take around 2.5-3 hours to reach. You will also find private taxis here for 700 – 1000 INR which will take around 1.5- 2 hours to reach Kasol.

The nearest railway station to Kasol is the Jogindernagar Railway Station at a distance of 125 km. You will get a passenger train to Jogindernagar from Pathankot Railway station which will take around 10 hours to complete the journey. The train cost is around 50 INR but you should only opt for it if you have a lot of time to spare.

From here, you can take a bus to Kasol which will take around 5-6 hours to reach and can cost around 150-200 INR. You will also get private taxis from here which can cost around 2500 – 3000 INR. For people planning a Delhi to Kasol trip, this is a good and budget-friendly option but it requires a lot of time.

If you are starting from nearby cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla, etc. then you can always plan a road trip to Kasol as well. Kasol is located around 522 km from Delhi, 290 km from Chandigarh, 229 km from Shimla, and so on. You can easily leave early around 3-4 a.m. and reach Kasol by the evening.

Another option would be to take buses to reach Kasol. Sadly, there are no direct buses to Kasol so you need to reach Bhuntar/Kullu first. From here, you will get both local buses and private taxis to reach Kasol. This is a good option for people planning a Delhi to Kasol trip as you will find several buses to Bhuntar/Kullu throughout the day.

Reaching Bhuntar/Kullu

You can take Private/Volvo buses to Bhuntar or Kullu or you can take the Himachal bus services. You can book a ticket for yourself from the HRTC website which will cost around 680 INR for Bhuntar, 700 INR for Kullu for ordinary buses.

There are also Himsuta and Volvo buses for both the places which range between 1100 – 1500 INR. For private buses, you can check out websites like Redbus, Goibibo, etc for a cheaper Volvo service.

Bhuntar/Kullu to Kasol

Once you have reached Bhuntar, you will find the options for both the buses and cabs. Buses will obviously be cheaper costing you somewhere around 50 INR per person. However, they tend to take 3-4 hours to reach Kasol. So if you are short on time, I would advise against it.

A cab would cost you around 1500-2000 INR for 7 people from Bhuntar which you can share with other travelers. At least, that is what we did. It took us just 2 hours to reach from Bhuntar to Kasol and cost us around 200 INR per person.  And hey, we made new friends on the way too! 😀

How to Travel Locally in Parvati Valley

Once you have reached Kasol, you might be wondering how you can head to nearby places in Parvati Valley. Well, we have covered that too. You will find a plethora of options here to suit all kinds of travelers.

Kasol to Malana

If you are planning for a day trip from Kasol to Malana, then you can include the Malana trek in it as well. There is no direct bus from Kasol to Malana so you will need to catch a bus till Jari and get down at the water plant before Jari. This is the path to take for Malana. There is a bus going to Jari in every 15-20 minutes from the Kasol market.

The bus will cost you barely 10 – 20 INR and would take around 20-30 minutes to reach the Malana Hydro Power stop.

Kasol to Manikaran

To reach Manikaran, you can again take a bus from the Kasol market. The frequency is something like 1 bus every 30 minutes. The price of this bus would be around 5 – 10 INR per person, taking 20 minutes to reach.

Kasol to Barshaini

For people interested in going to Tosh or Kheerganga, Barshaini is the last bus stop. You will get a bus to Barshaini from the Kasol Market which will cost around 30 INR and will take around 1-1.5 hours.

This bus passes through Manikaran on the way too so you can get the bus from Manikaran to Barshaini as well.  You will find 1 bus for Barshaini in every 30-45 minutes from Kasol/Manikaran.

Buses are obviously a cheaper option bus sometimes, you have to wait for a bus indefinitely. So, you can always go for private taxis as well when traveling in Kasol.

Private Taxis

If you don’t wish to wait for buses, then you will find a few cabs in the Kasol Market as well. You can ask them to take you to nearby places but you will need to negotiate the price a little.

You also have an option of taking a cab from Kasol to Malana which will leave you in the Malana Village. The distance from Kasol to Malana village is just 22 km and can be covered in 1.5 hours.

You can easily get a taxi for 500 – 700 INR which can be shared if you are traveling in a group.

Although Kasol to Manikaran is just 4.3 km, you can also take a taxi for 100-150 INR to reach here. Although I would suggest that you choose a bus or trek this distance and save yourself some money.

Kasol to Barshaini

You can also get a taxi from Kasol to Barshaini which will again cost around 500-700 INR and will take approximately 1.5 hours to reach.

Kasol to Tosh

From Barshaini, Tosh is another 3.5 – 4 km but the taxi goes only for the first 3 km. After that, you need to walk to reach the village and explore this gorgeous hamlet.

The taxi will take around 100-200 INR to drop you off at Tosh and you can actually bargain to get the taxi from Kasol to Tosh in 700 INR.

If you want to travel from Kasol to Tosh, then another way is to reach Barshaini first. And then, you can trek for the remaining 3.5-4 km. It will take a total of 4 hours to reach from Kasol to Tosh, including the trek. And after reaching here, you can enjoy the valley view and can actually camp here for the night.

Kasol to Kheerganga

Similarly, if you are planning to go from Kasol to Kheerganga, you can only reach Barshaini by a vehicle. After that, you will need to trek for the remaining 17 km in order to reach the Kheerganga summit. There are two routes for the Kheerganga trek and it can take around 7-8 hours total to complete it.

So, if you are planning a trip from Kasol to Kheerganga, start early in the morning.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BLx0aINAsTW/

How to Go Back to Kasol/Bhuntar

Tosh to kasol.

Similar to the Kasol to Tosh journey, you will need to first trek back to Barshini village. And from here, take a bus or private taxi back to Kasol. The bus will cost around 30 INR while the taxi will charge you 500-700 INR for the journey.

There is a single bus leaving from Barshaini to Kasol in every 1 hour which and will take around 2-2.5 hours to reach Kasol.

Kasol to Bhuntar/Kullu

Once you have reached Kasol, you can take a bus from Kasol to Bhuntar/Kullu or a private taxi. You can take the same bus in which you left from Barshaini and will reach Bhuntar in another 2 hours while Kullu will 3-3.5 hours.

The cost of the bus from Kasol to Bhuntar/Kullu will range around 50 INR. Another option is to take a private taxi for 1500 – 1800  INR to Bhuntar/Kullu.

Barshaini to Bhuntar/Kullu

If you have all your luggage with you then you can skip stopping at Kasol. Instead, you can take the direct bus from Barshaini to Bhuntar/Kullu which takes around 5 hours to reach. It will cost you approximately 100 INR and is a great option for budget travelers.

You will also get private taxis from here to Bhuntar/Kullu for 2300 – 2500 INR and will reach your destination in just 2-3 hours.

Top Places to Visit in Parvati Valley

Earlier, very few people knew about the Kheerganga trek but nowadays almost everyone does. More so since the ban on camping in Kheerganga which is such a relief. Because I remember, how utterly crowded and dirty Kheerganga was when we trekked here in 2016.

But regardless, you should definitely go for the Kheerganga day trek because the view is completely breathtaking. The trek is a little tiring but once you reach the top, you can actually see the snow-covered mountains in the distance. You can just sit and enjoy the view here while being surrounded by a calm and peaceful feeling.

Another amazing place to visit in Parvati Valley is the Tosh village. This place has several sweet, little colorful homes and provides you with a perfect view of the Pulga River. And you can also walk around a little to admire the various meadows and glacier-covered peaks.

Tosh Route

It also offers you the choice of an easy climb or a steep climb and takes around 1 hour to reach the Tosh village.

Here you should camp for one night and experience the intoxicating culture of the Tosh people, then start early the next day for the Kheerganga trek. If you are looking for some offbeat places in Himachal , then Tosh is the place for you.

Now, you might be familiar with Malana because of the infamous hashish production over here. But trust me, this place is more than that. This isolated village is beautiful, situated on the other side of the Parvati valley and can be only accessed by trekking or personal vehicles.

You don’t find buses traveling to this path and that is just as well since this protects Malana from getting polluted. It is a 2-3 km trek and would take you around 2-3 hours to complete it. But, the mesmerizing view from this side cannot be missed.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BQhQ7vnAPf0/?taken-by=meanderandwander

Malana is surrounded by tall, majestic mountains on both sides. And the Parvati River passes in front of it, separating it from the other side of the valley. This place is not really familiar to tourists and that is what makes it even more interesting.

Located along the banks of Parvati River, Manikaran is a small town in Parvati valley and is famous for the Manikaran Gurudwara and its many hot springs. It is also filled with a lot of beautiful temples, if you are a religious person or even if not, this is a place you should definitely visit once.

One of the main attractions here are the hot springs and the beautiful background. Honestly, the view behind the temples and the Gurudwara is really ethereal and indescribable. And if you do happen to stop at this charming place, make sure you do experience the Gurudwara’s langar. The entire langar process is heart touching and the food is just delicious.

Manikaran

There are a lot of fascinating and interesting stories about how this place was built and how the hot springs and the langar came into being. A definitely must-visit place, this place should definitely be visited once you are in Parvati Valley.

Finally, let’s not forget one of the main places to visit in Parvati Valley.

This hill station is just filled with hippies and boasts of a lot of happening parties and music festivals. Here, you will see a lot of travelers get together and will also meet new people and just enjoy. Another reason to visit this place would be to camp along the Parvati River and witness the beautiful full moon at night.

Kasol

Kasol also has a beautiful market from where you can buy amazing souvenirs for home.  Also, at night the street just rushes with colors which make this place even more beautiful to explore.

You can also enjoy a dip in the hot water springs that can be found at two places in Parvati Valley – Manikaran and Kheerganga. Kheerganga hot springs are legendary as it offers you a warm feeling while being surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks.

As for the Manikaran hot springs, you won’t have any surrounding views to admire but the feeling will be quite serene and peaceful.

You can admire the gorgeous peaks around you and simple relax. Read a book or paint or just pick up any old-forgotten hobby which you don’t have time for anymore.

Best Time to Visit Parvati Valley

Frankly, Parvati Valley can be visited throughout the year. The weather stays cool and there are some new events happening here around the year. But each season brings a new and unique experience that can make your trip to Parvati Valley quite memorable.

Here is a breakdown of what you can expect here in different seasons.

Summer Season (March – June)

For people who want to escape the summer heat, a Delhi to Kasol trip in summers is the best plan. In summers, the weather is pleasant and you can also camp and indulge in water activities here near the Parvati river.

The summer months of March to June also allow you to enjoy the wilderness of Kasol. If you are a party animal, then visit Kasol in the month of May as a lot of rave and trance parties happen during this time. Some really happening festivals like Magica Festival, Shiva Squad Festival, etc. too happen during the summers.

Barshaini, Parvati Valley

Monsoon Season (July – September)

Personally, my favorite time to visit the mountains is during the monsoon season. This is because there are fewer people during this time and the mountains are covered with lush greenery.

Yes, there are increased chances of landslides and road blockages but the mountains become extremely gorgeous and fresh during this time. Also, this is the cheapest time to visit Kasol but be prepared to be cooped up inside for hours at a time.

Winter Season (October – February)

Winters can be chilly in Parvati Valley but are also a good time to visit. There are chances of snowfall in places like Kheerganga, Tosh, etc. And the temperature is freezing during these months. This is why there are fewer tourists around here at this time.

But if you love winters and quiet then this is definitely a good time to visit Kasol. Also, New Year Party at Kasol is pretty happening and sees a lot of tourists coming here from all over the world.

ATM and Network Availability in Parvati Valley

Atms in parvati valley .

One of the most important things to keep in mind is that there are just 2-3 ATMs in Parvati Valley. Yes, you heard me right. There is a single ATM in Kasol and two more in Manikaran.

You will find more ATMs in Bhuntar or Kullu so make sure you withdraw cash from there. Don’t rely on Card Swiping machines in the Tosh, Manikaran side. Carry sufficient cash for your entire Kasol trip.

Kasol to Manikaran Market

Network Availability in Parvati Valley

BSNL will work the best in Parvati Valley and might even be accessible on the Kheerganga trek. Apart from that, Vodafone, JIO, Airtel will work well till Manikaran. You will receive no Airtel or Vodafone signal once you reach Barshaini.

And once you reach the Kheerganga summit, your BSNL sim will stop catching the network as well. On Tosh side, you might get Airtel signal as well but most other mobile networks will have poor or no signal.

Food is an important part of any trip, especially if you are planning to trek and hike a lot. And well, Parvati Valley offers you a plethora of good food to enjoy on your trip. So, whether you like Tibetan or Israel or Continental dishes, you will find it all here.

There aren’t many restaurants here except for the ones in the hotels, but there are several food options to consider.

It is no surprise now but Kasol has numerous amazing cafes which offer several cuisines like Israeli, Fast Food, Continental, etc. While these cafes are not on the cheaper side, they do offer an amazing ambiance. And the food is pretty good as well as you get to taste new dishes here.

Fruits and Vegetables

Finally, you can also enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables here if you are on a tight budget. Green Apples can be found in abundance here and usually cost just 5-10 INR apiece.

Parvati River, Kasol

You can easily plan a short trip to Kasol, Tosh, Malana, etc. on a small budget. And you can indulge in trekking and other exciting activities here. Just plan your trip a couple of days in advance and do keep a lookout for some exciting festival or event here.

Trust me, you will fall in love with nature here and will have an awesome time enjoying the rave parties here.

Rishabh

Hello, Me & my friends are planning a 3 day trip to Kasol kheerganga & tosh this month. Wanted to know if June is a good time to go there? And how can we plan trekking to kheerganga & Tosh in these 3 days?

Yes, June is a good time to visit. My suggestion to you would be to go to Tosh and camp there for a day. From there, next day you can leave for Kheergangna, however, we recently got to know that the camping in Kheerganga has been shut down. So, you can come back to Kasol/Tosh on the same day.

Akshay Runijha

I have recently went to Kasol tosh. Your blog really helpful for me.

We are glad to hear that Akshay! 😀

Jaspreet kaur

Hey It’s a perfect travelling guide for me But I just need to know is it safe to travel this last weekend of December

Yes, last weekend is perfect for traveling here as well Jaspreet. 🙂

dipak shenvi

If we stay in Chalal, can Tosh, Manikaran and Kheerganga be done in one day? Considering we want to trek. And then Malana for the second day. What else can be explored? Or any suggestions from your side would be welcome 🙂

I wouldn’t suggest you do it in a day because you won’t be able to enjoy the view this way. The Kheerganga trek itself takes around 5-6 hours in total (for ascent and descent) and you need to spend at least 2-3 hours at the top here since you have trekked so much. You can club Tosh and Manikaran in a day but you would still need at least 3 days to do this itinerary.

Meghana

Do you know anything about the psychtrance music festival that take place at kasol or tosh?

There was a trance music festival which occurred at the start of March and there will be 1 for New Year celebration. But apart from that, we don’t have an idea about other trance music festivals in Kasol or Tosh.

It would be better if you check online on the events’ website to know about the upcoming fests here. 🙂

Jake

Hi there. Thank yo for the article. 🙂

Im planning a 2 week trip. From Dharamshala (2 Days) Bir Billing (2 Days) Kasol + Malana+ Rasol (2 days) and the rest of 6 days to chilling in tosh + Kheerganga. Do you think there is a better place than tosh to just chill / relax. Where would you suggest I should spend more time if not tosh. Please Advise. 🙂

Well, personally I feel that Bir is a better place to chill but then that is just me. 😀

However, I do think that 6 days for Tosh and Kheerganga would be too much and you might get bored. You can shorten the time there by adding Rajgundha Valley to your itinerary. I swear it is one of the most amazing and offbeat places in Himachal, around 14 km from Billing.

You will find detailed information about Rajgundha here: https://www.nomllers.com/rajgundha-valley-trek-from-bir-billing/

Let me know if you have any more questions. 🙂

That’s amazing Prasun. Yes, people take their vehicles to Tosh. Regarding the hotels, there would be many now which are safe for family.

Rajat Kumar

Honestly, I fell in love with Tosh though I came for Kasol. Maybe I need to go back to Kasol to embrace its beauty.

I can totally understand. 🙂 Hope you visit soon!

About Kasol-Kheerganga-Tosh-Malana-Trek

For the wanderers by soul and adventurous by heart, the heavenly state of Himachal Pradesh comes as a gift from God. All you need is a backpack on your shoulder and an indomitable spirit to explore the unknown in your mind, and you can conquer the enchanting values that lie within the chains of mountains in this part of the Himalayas. One such is the beautiful Parvati Valley, birthing from the confluence of Rivers Parvati and Beas in the Kullu district of Himachal.

With all its charm and beauty, Parvati Valley lures out thousands of trekkers and travellers every year to its pristine lands, who answer unfailingly to the call of the mountains. Lush green runs along the two banks of the river up the mountain slopes; and higher up there are vast stretches of snow, running right up to the delightful crowns of the majestic peaks. Amidst this brilliant display of nature at its best, there are a bunch of villages with residential huts and tiny little shops scattered sporadically.

Kasol is one such pretty-as-a-picture hamlet, located between Bhuntar and Manikaran. This quaint village is growing in popularity among trekkers and backpackers, but its beauty is still virgin and untarnished enough to give you an enigmatic ambience. The unique thing about Kasol is its globalism amidst localism. You will find people from different ethnicities and far corners of the world settled here, drawn by the appeal of nature. Israelis are in large numbers, and you will spot several restaurants and cafes with Israeli food and Hebrew banners. From Kasol, one can set off for a trek to Kheerganga or take a hike to Malana.

Kheerganga, while being a spiritual site owing to the legend of Lord Shiva, has a sensational beauty of its own. The entire area is a sprawling stretch of green pastures, occasionally interrupted by gurgling hot springs and local huts and cafes.

Tosh lies between Kasol and Kheerganga, tucked between high cliffs and tall conifers. The location largely caters to Bohemian-style travellers, who were known as ‘hippies’ in the 1960s and 70s. The village is indeed a melting pot of the kind of people who live off backpacks for months and never like to know what adventure awaits them the next day.

Malana, on the other hand, is more of a secluded, laid-back village on a side valley by the ferocious River Malana, overshadowed by the peaks of Chanderkhani and Deo Tibba. Malana is different from all other villages in the Valley or even in the entire state. The residents of Malana are known for having their separate lifestyle, culture and language than the rest, and even different legislation.

You will just need to have a higher tolerance to cold.
  • Nearest airport: Bhuntar
  • Nearest railway station: Joginder Nagar
  • Last ATM: Kasol and Manikaran

The trek will start from the base at Kasol and take you along a beautiful journey through charming forests of pine, nestling valleys, sparkling streams of the river and cosy camps under a gorgeous blue sky. From Kasol, you will first visit Tosh and then trek to Kheerganga via Rudranag temple. On your way back, stop at Kasol again for rest and a meal, and then visit the village of Malana. Within this short itinerary, you will hopefully have a remarkable experience with us which will be worth remembering forever.

How to reach the Kasol

Kasol will be the first stop of the 4-day trek, which can be reached via Bhuntar if you take public transportation or directly in a hired cab. You have to reach Kasol on your own, so you can avail of any of the following modes of transport.

Travelling by road is the most common practice to reach Bhuntar. You have to start from Delhi, which is 481 km away and takes nearly 12 hours, or from Chandigarh, which is 240 km away and takes 7 hours. If you hire a cab, then you can arrive right at Kasol without having to stop at Bhuntar. You can also stop at the roadside Dhabas at your will to enjoy meals and tea breaks along the journey.

But in the case of public transportation, which is cheaper, Bhuntar will be your first stop. There are both private and HRTC Volvo buses leaving from ISBT bus stops in Delhi (Kashmir Gate) and Chandigarh. The Volvos leave in the evening from Delhi and late at night from Chandigarh, so the travellers can reach Bhuntar at around 6-7 AM the next morning. From Bhuntar, there are local bus routes that pass via Kasol to Manikaran Sahib or Barshaini. Hop onto one of these buses to reach Kasol which is the base camp for your trek.

Bhuntar has an airport which is 31 km away from Kasol, but it has limited connectivity and expensive flights with long durations. If you are coming from another part of the country and want to travel by airway exclusively, then it would be wise to land at Delhi or Chandigarh and then take another flight to Bhuntar.

The nearest major railhead is at Pathankot, but it is 150 km away from Kasol. Joginder Nagar railway station is closer in distance, 124 km away. From both the places you can get cabs for Kasol.

Day 1 :  Arrival at Kasol and trekking to Chalal village via Manikaran

  • Gain altitude up to 5774 ft (1760 metres) at Manikaran
  • Visit Manikaran Sahib and Chalal village
  • Trek for 4.5 km
  • Night stay at Kasol

Early morning on the first day of the trek, you will be arriving at Kasol via Bhuntar. You can have your breakfast at Bhuntar before setting off for Kasol. At Kasol, you will be checked in by our representative at your respective place of lodging. There are many homestays and small hostels around Kasol perfect for accommodation. After a bit of rest and freshening up, take a hike around the quaint village of Kasol to explore a couple of local destinations. The main two locations to be covered are Manikaran and Chalal village.

Manikaran is a centre of a pilgrimage around an hour’s trek uphill from Kasol. It is sacred to both Hindus and Sikhs, as it has several shrines of Rama, Krishna, Shiva, and Vishnu, as well as the famous Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara. There are many legends involved with the place, stemming from both Hindu and Sikh mythologies. Other than spirituality, Manikaran is also famous for its healing properties. It is known for the numerous hot springs here that make way through the stones and boulders. The springs have no sulphur and are known for curing bodily ailments. The food served out by the Gurudwara langar here is often cooked in the hot waters.

From Manikaran, trek for around 10 minutes to reach the beautiful hamlet of Chalal. Known for its weed production and party-culture, Chalal is also perfect for a serene trek through pine forests and winding roads, and a suspension bridge over the gushing waters of Parvati. Spend some time here taking in the beauty of the place and then walk back to Kasol.

Kasol itself is worth exploring a bit, with the streets lined up with street-side restaurants and kitsch cafes serving Israeli food. There is also a flea market ideal for some souvenir shopping. All-in-all, Kasol will remind you of a nameless exotic town with colour splashed everywhere which you might have seen on a travel blog or magazine. But here it is, alive and bustling – all for you to explore.

Day 2 :  Trek to Tosh via Kalga and Pulga

  • Drive from Kasol to Barshaini (16 km) for 1 hour
  • Trek from Barshaini to Kalga-Pulga (5 km) for 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Trek back to Barshaini and up to Tosh (4 km) for 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Gain altitude up to 7874 ft (2400 metres) at Tosh
  • Night stay at Tosh camp

On the second day, you will be trekking to the beautiful and exotic location of Tosh. After having breakfast at your Kasol lodging, you will embark on your short drive to Barshaini, located at the confluence of Parvati and Tosh Rivers. The drive will take about an hour. Since you will be trekking for the next two days and then come back to Kasol before leaving for home, you can leave your extra luggage at your hostel or homestay in Kasol for safekeeping. No point in adding weight during the trek.

At Barshaini, there is a bridge over River Parvati. Take right from here to trek to Kalga and Pulga villages. The trail here will be lined by small Himachali huts and shops on both sides. You can expect friendly and fluffy Himalayan dogs to accompany you along the way. Here you will also find grocery stores and can refill water and stock up on dry food. Trekking ahead of Pulga, you will reach the enchanting woods called Fairy Forest. The branches of the tall conifers here touch each other so closely that the azure blue mountain sky is barely visible from below. The ambience here gives you the vibes of a forest from fantasy land, thus justifying its moniker perfectly.

It takes an hour to walk up to Pulga and another to come back down to the temple of Barshaini. From there it is yet another hour of trek to the Tosh camping fields. You will find Tosh to be a potpourri of travellers from around the world having a great time together. Walking around and saving the beautiful scenery around in your mind and your cameras are the main thing to do in Tosh. Like Kasol, several boutique cafes sprinkle the region here as well, where you can enjoy Pahadi cuisine at its best. You can take a walk to the nearby Kutla village for a more intimate glance at the local culture.

Stay the night at a local camping zone or a home stay. Tosh Waterfall Camps are the most popular ones here.

Day 3 :  Trek to Kheerganga via Rudranag

  • Trek from Tosh to Kheerganga (7 km) for 2 hours
  • Gain altitude up to 13,051 ft (3,977 metres) at Kheerganga
  • Stop at Rudranag temple on the way
  • Lunch at on-the-road cafe
  • Night stay at Kheerganga camp

On day three, you will be trekking from Tosh to Kheerganga which takes around two hours to reach and another two to come back down. On your way to Kheerganga today, you will pass the village of Nakthan – a quaint Himachali hamlet with wooden hits and colourful cafes. A short distance away is the famous Rudranag temple. The temple is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and gets its name from a serpentine waterfall nearby. From the waterfall, you can fill your water bottles for the next part of the trek.

Next, the trail will take a sharp uphill gradient as you make your way towards Kheerganga. There will be dhabas and cafes on the road for a mid-day meal or lunch. Upon reaching your destination, which is the topmost part of Kheerganga, take some time to take in the stunning beauty of the landscape here. Natural beauty meets mythological legend at this underrated Himalayan trek.

Everyone knows the story of Hindu pantheon where Lord Shiva and Parvati Devi asked their two sons to travel around the world. Being the astute general their elder son Karthikey immediately set off on his journey atop his vehicle, the peacock. But Ganesh, being the wiser, simply circumferences his parents, saying they were his entire world. Impressed, Lord Shiva granted him the blessing ahead of Karthikeya. When the latter came back and saw what had happened, enraged, he left and took refuge at the location of Kheerganga for deep meditation. To take their son home, Lord Shiva and Parvati Devi came here themselves. To convince her son, the goddess made kheer flow from the mountains like a river. From this myth, the place gets its name, Kheerganga.

The legend continues to say that Lord Parshurama evaporated the kheer in the streams ahead of Kalyug to keep men from fighting over it. All that remains of it is the hot water. Kheerganga is indeed known for several hot streams and fountains, many of which are accessible for a quick and relaxing dip. It is said that Shiva himself was so impressed by the location that he himself meditated here for centuries. There is a temple here dedicated to him and this legend.

At Kheerganga, you will be staying in one of the local tents right in the middle of the majestic wilderness. Enjoy your dinner and a good night’s sleep to keep yourself charged for a lot of legwork that awaits you the next day.

Day 4 :  Come back to Kasol and trek to Malana

  • Trek back from Kheerganga to Barshaini (6.1 km) in 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Drive from Barshaini back to Kasol
  • Lunch at Kasol
  • Drive to Malana Nallah in the car from Kasol (20 km) in 1 hour
  • Trek from Malana Nallah to Malana village in 1 hour
  • Return to Kasol and night stay

After breakfast, trek down the same route via Rudranag and Nakthan, but this time keep walking down towards Barshaini. Take this opportunity to take some more pictures of the excellent vista Himalaya presents here. At Barshaini, your ride will wait to take you back to Kasol. Have your lunch and take some rest at Kasol. After that, get on the car yet again for an excursion to Malana.

The two-hour drive will take you via Jari and drop you off at Malana Nallah. From there, it is an hour’s trek up to the main village. Malana, near Pin Valley, is known for its pristine landscape and the world-famous hashish called Malana cream. But the most unique thing about Malana is the other-worldly ambience the village soaks itself in.

The residents of the village believe themselves to be the descendants of the army soldiers of Alexander the Great who stayed back when he attacked India in the Before-Christ era. Their administration is presumably run by their unshaken faith in the local deity, Jamblu Devta, under the supervision of an eleven-member council. They have their own laws and rules and do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Indian government as such, which is probably why the cultivation of marijuana is so widespread. Modernity and science-based education have not really reached this offbeat village, and the people believe in several superstitions unheard of anywhere else in the country.

Spend some quality time here to explore the oddities of Malana. But be aware of not crossing the limit as a visitor. The villages are very strict about outsider intervention. They consider themselves superior owing to the superior Aryan ancestry that they believe in, and thus it is not allowed to have physical contact with any resident of the village. They are friendly to speak and to photography, but they will not participate in the hand-to-hand exchange.

After you are done roaming around, trek back down to where you were dropped off. You will be driven back to Kasol for dinner and night’s stay. You can visit the local Kasol market at night if you want to do some last-minute shopping.

Day 5 :  Check-out and return

  • Check-out after breakfast
  • Have a safe journey back home

Leave with heart-warming and lovely memories of Kasol-Tosh-Malana-Kheerganga trek as you leave for home after breakfast. Be prepared to leave by the check-out time of your lodging and have a safe trip back to Delhi or Chandigarh. You can avail similar transports back via Bhuntar as you did while coming.

Wishing you a great trekking experience!

CAMP AT KASOL AND MALANA TREK - 3 DAYS/2 NIGHTS

Besides exquisite natural beauty in the pristine laps of nature, Kasol is also surrounded by ancient and mysterious places like Malana.

TREK TO MALANA/MAGIC VALLEY

Malana is a tiny hamlet in the Parvati Valley of the Himalayas at an altitude of 2,652 metres (8,701 ft) above sea level. It is an ancient Indian village that has remained isolated from the rest of the world. The peaks of Chanderkhani and Deotibba shadow the village. Malana has its own lifestyle and social structure, and people are strict in following their customs.

Malana is still not connected directly by road and it can only be reached by a 3-4 hours trek on foot. There are two prevailing myths about Malana which cannot be authenticated. According to the local legends, Jamlu Rishi once inhabited this place and made rules and regulations. The village administration is democratic and is believed, by locals, to be the oldest democracies of the world with a well organised parliamentary system.

The villagers believe that they have pure Aryan genes and that they are descendants of Alexander the Great’s soldiers.

Kasol Itinerary for First Time Travellers

malana trek from kasol

traveller Swapnil

Kasol itinerary will be very helpful if you are visiting Kasol for the very first time. It can be a little confusing as to what places should one cover during the visit as there is no dearth of picturesque places in and around Kasol, I am hoping that my detailed Kasol itinerary will help you plan your travel without any hassle.

Not long ago Kasol was just another quaint little hamlet tucked away deep in Himachal Pradesh that no one knew about. Recently it burst onto the tourist map due to two main reasons, one being easy availability of high-quality hashish ( Possession and consumption of Hashish are illegal in India,  you can be even arrested if you happen to have it ), and second due to beautiful hiking and trekking trails all around Kasol.

In my opinion, Kasol offers much more than the stereotypical clichés given to it by people. For instance, if you are a foodie then Kasol is the best place to be at. There are a ton of different cafés that offer lip-smacking multi-cuisine delicacies to soothe your taste buds.

If you are an avid trekker then there are a lot of hiking routes and trails that will excite you. The vibe of this place is such that one would to just relax and admire the serene landscapes while witnessing the river Parvati in its full flow.

Kasol, a scenic hamlet located in Parvati Valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh is the hippie capital of India. Kasol was already on the hippie trail for quite a long time but only a handful of people knew about it. Off late more and more people have started visiting this place, making it a favourite among backpackers

There are many things you can do in and around Kasol. A pre-defined Kasol itinerary can help you explore Kasol in a more efficient manner.  In the current blog, I will be providing you with a detailed Kasol itinerary. However, before I proceed, there are certain things you should know Kasol:

From relishing hummus to going on a trek, there are many exciting things to do in Kasol .  So, depending on the number of days you have, this Kasol itinerary will surely help you plan accordingly. I would suggest spending around 4 -7 days in an around Kasol, but many do not have that luxury.

I started my Kasol trip from Mumbai by taking a direct flight to Delhi. I backpacked across Parvati Valley for 10 days and stayed in Kasol for around 4-days during winters.

As most of the people who travel to Himachal Pradesh either start from Delhi or Chandigarh, here are 3 different Delhi to Kasol trip itineraries depending on the number of days.

chalal bridge kasol

Surreal landscapes as seen from Chalal bridge which is just 5 mins away from the main Kasol market. Chalal is one of the must-visit treks around Kasol

Kasol itinerary for 2 days: Perfect for a Weekend Trip to Kasol

This 2-night Kasol itinerary can be a perfect weekend trip if you are looking to escape your mundane routine for a couple of days. I am assuming that the trip starts from Delhi.

You start by boarding an overnight bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi. You can take an HRTC Volvo bus and even book the tickets in advance online . These are a quite comfortable and convenient option. Board any bus that goes to Manali.

Kasol Itinerary 4 days: The plan I would recommend

I feel that a minimum 4-days are needed to experience the sheer beauty of this place. This 4 days Kasol Itinerary also involves a bit of trekking to one most famous and beginner-friendly treks in Himachal that is Kheerganga.

Your trip starts by taking an overnight bus from Delhi to Bhuntar.

7 Places that need to be added to your Kasol Itinerary

Here is a brief overview of some of the places covered under my Kasol itinerary:

  • Manikaran- Manikaran is a Sikh and Hindu pilgrimage centre that attracts many visitors. Take a dip in the hot water springs here and visit the temples and the Gurudwara.
  • Tosh-  Tosh is the last motorable village in Parvati Valley. Surrounded by lush green mountains with pine, deodar, oak trees, it offers a magnificent view of these mountains. You can read my complete backpacking guide to Tosh in this blog .
  • Chalal – Chalal is just 30 mins hike from Kasol It is one of the shortest and easiest hiking trails around Kasol.
  • Rasol – Rasol is another unexplored village in Parvati Valley. You can easily trek from Kasol to Rasol village in about 2-3 hours.
  • Kheerganga – Kheerganga is one of the most sought after treks in Kasol. This trek takes about 2 days to finish and can be completed even by beginners.
  • Kalga- is another lesser-known village of Parvati Valley. You can find a few accommodations here.

How much will your Kasol Trip Cost?

One of the main reasons why people head to Kasol and nearby places is because it is light on the pocket as there are is no scarcity of decent budget options for accommodation except for a few months when it is peak season. The internal transport in and around Kasol is also very cheap.

Accommodation is fairly inexpensive in and around Kasol (except peak season prices are high to due high tourist influx). A budget stay will cost around 500-800 INR per day depending on what you choose .

  • If you choose Backpackers hostel that it can come down to around 300-350 INR per dorm bed.
  • Guesthouses and will cost anywhere between 500-800 INR.

If you have someone to share a room with, then guesthouses and hotels can be a decent option as well. You can opt for Luxury hotels, guesthouses in Kasol but your cost will go up. Kasol also has a lot of campsites around the bank of the river Parvati. But they tend to be a little bit expensive than Hostels, Guesthouse, and hotels.

The only thing that is a little bit expensive is the food. If you are going to visit the famous cafés in Kasol then it will cost you a bit but trust me it is worth it since the food is just amazing here.

Food is going to a bit expensive here, So I would say it will be around 500-700 INR per day depending on how many cafes you visit. Though it is a little bit on the expensive side, trust me, you will love all the Multi-cuisine delicacies that Cafés in Kasol offer.

green house cottage kasol

Green house cottage is located at one of the best locations at Kasol. It is surrounded by forest and Parvati river is a 5-minute distance away from the cottage. I absolutely loved the stay here.

Where to Stay In Kasol on a budget?

The accommodation shouldn’t be a problem as there are plenty of budget hostels, hotel, and guest houses. As soon as you enter Kasol, you will spot clusters of Budget hotels and guesthouses the rooms there are not fancy but are decent enough.

They can be priced anywhere between 500 – 800 INR . The prices can be exorbitantly high during the peak season even for even basic rooms. I stayed in a couple of hotels in that area that were decent and were priced at INR 500, but it was in February which can be considered as off-season and it did feel like off-season as the foreign travellers were almost absent.

For all you backpackers and solo travellers, backpacker hostels will come to your rescue as there a couple of popular hostel chains in Kasol. Some of the best hostels here are:

If you are for some decent luxury rooms then there you have to go to the far end of Kasol. Hotel Sandhya is one of the luxury hotels in Kasol . Greenhouse cottages near Hotel Sandhya have very spacious and amazing rooms. The Forest area and Parvati riverbank are also near. I got an amazing deal for Greenhouse cottages priced at INR 1000 . But this was winter, prices will be surely on the higher side during peak season.

How to reach Kasol?

There is no direct bus for Kasol from either Delhi or Chandigarh. Therefore, for a first time visitor, reaching Kasol can be a  bit confusing.

Reaching Kasol by road

Kasol can be only reached by road. For those making a solo trip to Kasol or are on a tight budget, Volvo buses will be your best bet. First, you need to board buses going towards Manali. There are a lot of Ordinary and Volvo buses of both private operators and HRTC plying on Delhi – Manali route from ISBT Kashmere gate.

Then you need to get down at Bhuntar since this is where the road to Kasol in Parvati valley diverts. From Bhuntar you need to take to local buses or shared cabs going towards Kasol.

There are a couple of HRTC buses from Delhi in the evening that directly go towards Manikaran. I n case you don’t want to do a break journey and save time then is the perfect option (Kasol comes before Manikaran). Of course, there are only two buses so it might not be convenient for everybody.

If have self-driven cars or private vehicles, then just make sure you take the diversion at Bhuntar. On average Delhi to Kasol, bus journey would take around 13-15 hours.

Reaching Kasol by Air

The nearest airport is in Bhuntar, but the frequency of flights to Bhuntar is very less. So the fares are on the higher side. From Bhuntar, you can take shared cabs or local buses going towards Kasol. It might not be a budget-friendly option, but if you short on days and budget is not a constraint then this option should be considered.

jim morrisons cafe kasol

Jim Morrisons café is one of the best cafe in Kasol. I absolutely loved the vibe of this café and they serve awesome food here. It is must visit when you are in Kasol.

Where and what to eat in Kasol?

Though cafes predominantly serve Italian and Israeli food, most of them offer multi-cuisine including Indian food in some cafés. Israeli food like hummus, falafel platter, etc. will be readily available and is a must-try when you are in Kasol .

Italian food served in most of the cafes is extremely delectable. Apart from Italian and Israeli food, traditional Indian food is also readily available in and around Kasol.

Kasol is also famous for its mouth-watering desserts like cakes, pie, croissants, etc . There are quite a few bakeries here which serve these kinds of deserts. Germany bakery being the most popular one out there with its apple pie and cheesecakes being a must-try. Unfortunately, when I visited Kasol German bakery was not operational since it was off-season and would open again only after April.

There are a ton of different Cafes in Kasol and you probably require 2 days to cover all of them. I visited quite a few of them and the food was extremely delicious. Bhoj Café, Evergreen Café, Freedom Café, Moondance Café, Jim Morrisons Café, Little Italy, Panj Tara Café are among the popular ones in Kasol.

In my opinion, Evergreen Café, Jim Morrisons Café and Little Italy are a must-visit as they serve lip-smacking food. Personally, my favourite is Jim Morrisons café as the café inspired by Jim Morrison the lead singer of the classic rock band “The Doors”, classic rock numbers are played during the day. The café has a very chill vibe to it and is heaven for vegetarians as the café serves only vegetarian food. To reach this café you would have to hike uphill for 10 minutes from Hotel Sandhya.

Unlike Manali, there are not many cafes that offer live music in Kasol. Panj Tara café is the only one that I know which offers live music.

What’s the best time to visit Kasol?

This is very subjective as this would depend on what kind of colours and landscapes one wants to see. But one thing is for sure the weather remains very comfortable throughout the year except for cold winters which start from late November to early March.

If you time your visit to Kasol during off-season months like January, February, March in winter, or in September, October, November during Autumn, then you would enjoy it a lot more as there would be no crazy tourist rush when compared to Summer months or the period of Christmas and new year. There would be no problems whatsoever for Backpackers and Budget travellers as the accommodation prices would not be exorbitantly high.

kasol itinerary

A total whiteout near Malana gate. If you want to experience snowfall, then heading to Malana can be wonderful to experience it as it is just 2 hours from Kasol. Though it snows in Kasol, if you visit in February or March then the chances of experiencing snowfall are very less in Kasol.

  Is Kasol safe to visit?

Kasol is very safe irrespective of gender. In fact, all of the Himachal is very safe and you will find lots of solo travellers backpacking around Kasol and Parvati valley. As you might already know Kasol is infamous for people looking for high-quality hashish called ‘Malana Cream’ , so please make sure you don’t engage in such illicit activities as possession of Hashish is illegal and you can even be arrested.

Apart from this, locals are very amiable and approachable, and they will help you out in any situation, so don’t hesitate and approach them if you need help. While hiking and trekking around this pristine valley avoid taking shortcuts unless accompanied by a professional guide.

We’ve all heard of the magnificent beauty of Himachal Pradesh’s Kasol, but have you heard of this little town right next to Kasol, hidden away in the hills? It’s called Malana – a ‘democracy’, famous for the world’s best hashish and the Malana trek!

Malana: One of the Oldest Democracies in the World

The enigmatic settlement of Malana, located in the Parvati Valley and surrounded by towering mountains, has a captivating secret. With its distinct appeal rooted in the concept that its people are sprung from Alexander the Great’s powerful troops, the town is unlike any other place on Earth. With its historic village administration—possibly the oldest republic in history—the community has a unique lifestyle and social structure.

The Malanis are renowned for being reluctant to accept strangers yet ardent guardians of their rich culture. Having physical contact with individuals or their properties is strictly banned, contributing to the village’s aura of exclusivity. Malana’s unspoiled status, which defies pollution and urbanisation and is unwavering in maintaining its unique cultural and ecological character, really sets it apart.

It seems like a universe apart from the mayhem and filth of metropolitan India, nestled among the immaculate rivers and valleys. Its distinct way of life is resilient, adding to the charm of the area and its stunning scenery. The undiscovered treasure’s economy is closely linked to tourism, as visitors look for comfort in Malana’s unspoiled beauty and mysterious culture.

Malana Trek Starting Point

2 2

Malana trek is one of the most sought-after treks in Himachal Pradesh and is popular among those who visit Kasol. There are two routes for finishing this trek – one easy and one difficult. You can choose a route that goes best with your fitness level. The easier route is popular among tourists, while the difficult one is not as frequented by many.

First things first, to do this trek, you’ll have to reach Zari first. From Zari, you can get a shared taxi that will drop you off at one of the starting points of the trek. If you do not specify to the driver which point you need to be dropped off, they will drop you off at the most popular starting point – the beginning of the easier route. You must have seen pictures of this point all over the internet.

The cab will cost you around Rs. 300 to reach the Malana trek starting point of a higher difficulty level, while a cab to the easier starting point will cost you around Rs. 500.

In terms of time taken, the easier route will take about an hour or two, while the difficult route will take around 3 to 4 hours. The difficult route is steep and full of streams and difficult climbs. Ensure you have enough water bottles if you go this route.

malana trek point

Malana Trek Distance

The distance of the trek is about 4 kilometres from both the routes.

Malana Trek Accommodation

A few places to stay in the village include Eagle Cafe & Guest House, Rudra Cafe, and Dragon House Cafe. Basic amenities are offered in each room for a minimal fee of Rs. 500, shared by two people. In addition, a campground is located in the village’s back area. Malana Magic Camping is a fantastic campground where you can set up a tent and take in the surrounding beauty; located around 5 miles towards the back of the settlement. You can camp close to the village even if you cannot obtain lodging there.

The Perfect Malana Trek Itinerary

Read along to find out the best itinerary for the trek. The route we’ve taken is the shorter one, which is the highly recommended route. The difficult one is not suitable for everyone, and you can encounter many hurdles while climbing that one.

6 2

Day 1: Delhi to Kasol

· Reach Kasol from Delhi via Bhuntar. You can find many buses going towards Kasol that will drop you at your Bhuntar, from where you can take another bus or cab to Kasol.

· It is advisable to traverse this journey overnight – if you are visiting this region only for the Malana trek, overnight travel is the best option. If you plan to stay in Kasol first and then move on to the trek, you can also travel in the daytime.

Day 2: Kasol to Malana

· In the morning, take a shared taxi from Zari, 10 kilometres from Kasol. You can also find a bus going along the Zari route, and you can choose to hitchhike.

· From Zari, you will find many taxis that will drop you at one of the starting points of the trek for a minimal amount. You can ascend the easier route and return from the difficult or vice versa. You can also descend the same route you climbed up from.

· From the start, you must climb a few steep stairs and then cross a stream. Enjoy the scenic view of the Parvati Valley from here.

· A few tea stalls also sell maggi, biscuits and tea. You can take water bottles from here as well.

· After trekking for about 4 hours, reach the village and do some sightseeing. As you enter the village, you will find many vendors trying to sell you hashish. You can also go to one of the cannabis farms to see how this famous Malana Cream is produced.

· Recently, the town government signed the law of shutting down all hotels and guesthouses for tourists as their God became angry. You cannot stay the night at Malana anymore, but many places are outside town, including guesthouses, hostels, and camps.

Malana Trek Tips and Important Things to Note

· The town is one of the largest democracies in the world – they do not follow the rules and laws of the Indian government – they make their own.

· There is a myth that says that the people here are descendants of the Greek Alexandar the Great.

· Their local deity is Jamlu Rishi – he got angry with the town being portrayed as a cannabis hub in the rest of the world and shut down permission for tourists to stay the night.

· Take enough water bottles with you – if you climb the difficult route, you must stay hydrated.

· The nearby Winchin Valley offers tourists accommodation options like camps and guesthouses.

· Respect the local customs. Tourists are not allowed to touch the temples or talk to the women of Malana.

· Remember to pack light and wear comfortable trekking shoes.

· Do not litter. Respect the environment and travel sustainably.

· Do not take photographs of people or the temples without their consent.

Although admission to the Jamlu Devta Temple is prohibited, the trip to its environs offers a glimpse into local culture. Walk to the temple and see the beautiful small artwork adorning the doors and walls. This architectural artistry demonstrates the commitment to maintaining the historical and religious value of the buildings, providing a window into Malana’s rich cultural legacy.

Buy Gumboots from the Local Stores

When you hike back from this beautiful town, the gumboots you can buy at the neighbourhood shops are a useful and considerate addition. These are handy, particularly if the terrain is difficult or you have unforeseen weather. It demonstrates the community’s ingenuity to ensure guests can access necessities for a cosy and pleasurable trekking trip.

Best Time to Do the Malana Trek

The Malana Trek is open to visitors all year round. Summer, spring and winter are the best season to do this trek. Avoid the monsoons from July to September, as the tracks tend to get slippery, and there is a high chance of landslides and natural calamities.

Snow fall in Kheerganga

Photo of In the Parvati Valley( Malana, Kasol,Tosh,Kheerganga) and the Myths associated by Satyam Kumar

I have heard a lot about Parvati Valley which have Kheerganga(trek), Tosh, Malana, Kasol and the "stuff" that they all are famous for. So, I decided to give it a try.

Day 1(Kheerganga):

We started our journey by hitting Barshaini village from where trek to Kheerganga starts. It is a 12 km stretch. It has two major stops name Nagthan village(around 4 km from Barshaini) and Rudranag Temple(around 8 km from Barshaini). At Nagthan one can refill their water bottles and it has cafe also to have some food. Rudranag temple has a waterfall which has awesome scenic beauty and is an interlude to this awesome trek. Till Rudranag the trek led us to beautiful panoramic views twisted mountain trails, snow capped peaks dotted with brilliant yellow mustard flowers. After Rudranag the the trek led us to thick lush green forest with rejuvenating air kissing your face with uphill ascent. Although the trail is well marked offering little scope for confusion, we got dog as our guide for the whole trek.

We took around 5 hours to complete this trek with 15-20 minutes pause at both stops. On reaching Kheerganga, we enjoy spending few hours in hot water spring. Initially the water seems to be very hot but gradually after entering the pool we feel normal. Believe me its the best feeling in the world taking bath in hot water spring which is located in between snow clad mountains--a reward in itself for most of us plagued by the monotony of routine life. The bath vanishes your tiredness and soreness and dizziness. There are few cafes available for stay and a Dharamsala also(Rs 100/- per night). There is a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva near the spring and a Kartikey cave just 100 mt trekking from the temple.

Kheerganga is not only peaceful, reviving and laid back , but if you are looking for a place for soul searching or to reach a state of thoughtlessness then it's the place. So serene and surreal where you want time to really stop;as you don't want this dream to get over soon.

Myth of Hot-Water Spring: It is said that Hot Spring was Kheer (Sweet rice pudding) originally but then converted in water so that it never gets over. One can still find White flakes considered to be milk cream in the spring.

Day 2(Tosh):

Although the weather was quiet calm till 6-7 pm yesterday but after that it started raining slowly and in the morning when we wake up around 8 am it all transformed from greenish surrounding to whitish one. "Snow-Snow everywhere" and still snow fall was there. At the same time I was feeling lucky to see snow fall second time in my life but also have tension of down trekking to Varshaini. We started down-trekking, watching our steps very carefully and completed it in around 5 hours and reach Varshaini around 2 pm all wet and tired.

According to our plan we head towards Tosh. At the stroke of 3 pm on our watch, we were welcomed by the cool gush from the mountains. As we scanned the landscape we were left totally speechless - literally stunned into silence and captivated by the magnificence of the glittering and massive expanse of the snow peaks bang in front and around us. The peak had fresh snowfall overnight, absolutely shimmering white and looked chastened. The towering peaks behind us and to our left - it was truly magical to witness these mountains from so close by distance. One had to pinch to believe that this was so surreal - crystal clear mountains, crisp and fresh air and 360 degree stunning landscape.

Tosh is essentially divided into two parts - one to our right which has approx. 50 odd houses and a primary school - the most popular spot on this side being the Aunty’s Cafe, which is located right at the end and is at the highest vantage point - you cannot get any closer to the mountains than this. We decided to explore this one first, as we could see shallow cloud building-up. We climbed the stairs (very narrow - barely can you keep one foot only) and reached the Top. We indulged in extensive photography of each and every section and angle of the mountains, i.e. with Parvati ranges on the extreme left to the Sainj valley ranges on the extreme right.

We interacted with a local (who offered home-stays) and he showed the local weed cultivation. He offered us a puff and there is no chance of refusing him. He further elaborated that once the sun goes down, Tosh explodes with jarring music, live bands. He mentioned that the other wing of the village is far more happening, especially the area at the rear end. We walked till the edge and again took additional snaps and explored the home-stays - just to get an idea. It was like a typical village house, the floors were pasted with cow dung, the walls had Lord Shiva painted on them, the colors on the walls (interior) were jarringly loud - pink, green The bedding was on the floor and there were a few worn-out chairs in the veranda. We marched on the well-marked trail and passed through the relatively clean, more picturesque, well built and colorful row of houses. This part of Tosh had a higher in-habitation density, the market was well marked with eateries (mostly catering to Israeli taste buds), there were several joints where-in people were engrossed in smoking the weed and under its influence the level of intimacy was at its height. So, we also had some Joints here from the Charas that we purchased from a local guy. "Bam Shankar"(INR 1000 for 1 tola(10 gram)) The views from this side of the village were equally stunning - mountain peaks, green pastures, grassland knolls and of course the dominant produce ‘weed’ growing all over the slopes, in the backyards. We stopped by a beautiful temple structure (newly constructed) - very vibrant colors. This was in the middle of the village, and usually is thrown open to the public once a year. The trail was uneven (up and down) and was taking a toll on our knees. But the sheer beauty around was the key motivating factors for us to keep pushing. We were inching closer to our destination, as we sighted a dam and alongside were the waterfall, wherein water was gushing out with a thunderous roar. We sat by to catch our breath and enjoy the nature’s bounty. The roar was so powerful that we could not hear each other without shouting at the top of our voices. We sipped our juices and munched a few goodies and just enjoyed the peaceful and serene surroundings - where else can you afford to get so much peace. We again had some Joints here . "Boom Shiva" . Of course we were ‘high’ and were rowdy and noisy - just splashing the condiments all over the place.

Day 3(Kasol):

We went to Kasol via Manikaran. There is regular bus service from Tosh to Kasol. Manikaran is a Sikh and Hindu pilgrimage on the bank or river Parvati famous for its hot springs. I found the place just like any other religious centre in India, full of energy and chaos. Devotees visit the famous Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara and an adjacent Shiva temple to receive blessings from various places but mostly Punjabi boys on bikes. And if you have not seen them earlier you are bound to be mesmerised just like many school children who throng the place, buy small rice bags (potli) and dip them in the boiling water of the springs to see them being cooked within minutes!.

Myth- The hot spring offer great healing for arthritis and skin diseases. This place is believed to have been goddess Parvati's bathing spot where she lost her earrings(Mani-jewel and Karan-ear).

Do eat langar (made from hot water from spring) here.

After Manikaran we went to Kasol which is around 3-4 km from here. Things we do at Kasol:

1. Walk along the Parvati river.

2. Tried Israeli Food at Evergreen restaurant.

3. Shopping(Bob Marley Tees)

Staying in Kasol is cheap and you can easily spot dealers who deal with Charas, LSD, and other drugs( Maal ).

Day 4(Malana: World's heaven of Cannabis):

We took bus at around 9 am from Kasol to Jari from where you have to hire a taxi to Malana Gate. There is no bus service from Jari to Malana's gate. The rate for small taxi is INR 800/- and for larger one is INR 1200/- . We were three so we hired the smaller one. There is around 1 hour trek to Malana village from the gate. The trek consists of good uphill climb. We interacted with locals and came to know about various stories related with this village which are enumerated:

Myths for Malana:

1.) You can't touch the villagers and their houses/temples. It has fine of INR 1500/-

2.) Some villagers believe they are descendants of the Lord Shiva .

3.) Some thought they are the decedents of the Aryans. A story does that when emperor Akbar was suffering for an a serious disease came to the village, the people of Malana were able to cure it. Akbar was so pleased that he gave tax-exemption to all the people residing in the village.

4.) Malana was founded by remnants of Alexander the Great’s Army.

5.) They are very rich because of the Malana Cream and hence villagers have Swiss bank accounts.

6.) They worship lord "Jamlu Rishi"( devta ).

7.) They speak their own language and had oldest democracy in the world.

After reaching village we went to Dragon cafe and purchased Malana Cream(Cannabis/Hash) at INR 1500/-.It has different shape than the one that we bought at tosh. The Tosh's maal was in spherical shape and Malana's maal was in pieces of rectangle but both has almost same effect. In a dimly lit room trans music was playing, huge posters of Shiva and Dragon Guest house adorned the Deodar walls of the room. There was more Malana cream in the air than oxygen. Peoples there, were busy smoking Chillum and one among them offer us Chillum too.(It was his birthday and he was on solo trip). We also started contributing to the surrounding and that was the perfect environment for getting high. This was a lifetime experience...:)

One can also do Chanderkhani Pass trek from here, but we didn't opt for that. Malana is more of a village for backpackers and travelers and less for tourists.
