The city grew to prominence due to part of the city being carved into ancient caves, which is referred to as “The Sassi”.

Along with the cave-dwelling, religious buildings have also been built into the rock and a slightly newer, dramatic city sits on top of the hill and is home to 60,000 people. 

Matera History and Quick Facts

The origins of Matera are frequently debated, with some historians believing that the caves of the Sassi have been settled for around 12,000 years.

If this is correct, it would mean the city is one of the oldest continuously settled areas in the whole world.

Alternatively, more conservative views suggest that the town has only been inhabited continuously for 3,000 years, with around 100,000 years of sporadic inhabitants before that.

Either way, it is widely agreed that Matera was probably one of Italy’s first-ever settlements. 

Matera’s more ‘recent’ history has been turbulent, with various invaders and rulers taking over after the city was officially in 251 BC by the Roman empire.

Sadly, during this time part of the city was destroyed as opposing forces fought to control the area. This was followed by a period where natural disasters and illnesses ravaged the city and Italy as a whole.

However, despite this, the cave dwellings remained inhabited until the 1950s, when they were finally deemed unsuitable for human occupation.

The Sassi was then turned into more or less a giant open-air museum. The city was granted UNESCO status in 1993.

Matera is located about 41 miles west of Bari and takes around an hour to reach it. However, if you are not planning to rent a car during your stay there are plenty of other ways to reach the magical city.

Packing for a day trip to Matera from Bari should be pretty easy but there are a few things extra I recommend to bring with you for the journey (and in general for your trip to Italy):

Italy power adapter:  One thing you should know about Italy is that they use different plugs than the rest of Europe.  If you have a plug with skinny prongs , it may fit fine.  But, if you’re trying to plug in a laptop or something with thicker prongs, you won’t have much luck.

If you are just wanting to visit Matera for the day then I recommend taking a full day trip to Matera from Bari .

Departing from Bari, you will head up into the hills to the city. Once in Matera, your informative guide will take you around the Sassi where you will be able to explore the cave dwellings and take a look at how the people lived in these special places throughout the years.

I stayed at two mid-range places in Bari, one was called De Rossi Holiday and the other was B&B Cavour 124 .  Both were apartment accommodations and were fantastic.

At De Rossi Holiday , the rooms were all a bit different and you shared a bathroom with others but felt like you had your own privacy the entire time.

At B&B Cavour , I had a really cozy place to stay for my first nights in Bari when I visited.  Again, it had a shared bathroom, but I had my own private room and it was very quiet and cozy.

One Day in Matera Itinerary: A Day Trip from Bari

There are few places in the world as magical, fascinating, and yet still quite unknown as Matera. Located in the region of Basilicata, this 2019 European Capital of Culture is thought to be one of the most inhabited settlements in history dating back to the Paleolithic period. Read this guide to make your own one day in Matera itinerary and why this amazing destination needs to be on your travel radar.

How Many Days in Matera?

One of your first questions while planning your time in Matera will be how many days to spend in Matera? If you’re looking to make a day trip to Matera from Bari or other nearby areas, you’ll be happy to know that the city can very easily be explored in one day. 

Seeing Matera in one day is a great experience in itself but might also make you keen to come back for a longer trip. On the other hand, Matera is without a doubt worth a trip in itself to at least stay a night or two and it makes for an excellent addition on any trip to Puglia or Southern Italy. 

This way you don’t need to rush and you can also see the city and Sassi at different points of the day. There is nothing more alluring than watching the city lights glisten from the Sassi at nighttime. 

Getting To and Around Matera

The best way to reach Matera no matter where you’re coming from in Italy is to take a direct train from the Bari central train station to Matera.

Trains from Bari to Matera take around 1.5 hours. Departures are quite regular so you don’t need to worry if you arrive late and miss your train. 

If you’re flying into the Bari airport, there are bus shuttles that take you to the Bari train station which takes only around 20 minutes, There are also buses that run directly from Bari Airport to Matera that can be booked here.

For those that plan on driving to Matera, keep in mind that parking is quite difficult to come by closer to the city. Your best option to snag parking will be on the outside of the old part of Matera and will be in the “new Matera”. If you need to rent a car, you can compare options on Rentalcars.com.

If you prefer to travel as part of a guided tour there are also several options such as this full-day tour to Matera only or this full-day tour that visits both Matera & Alberobello.

Once you reach the Sassi and old part of the city, the only way to get around will be on foot. Be prepared for your time exploring the historic Sassi with the correct footwear as there will also be quite a lot of stairs.

The good thing is that the part of Matera that you’ll be exploring is quite small so it’s not difficult at all to make your way around its entirety by walking.

1 Day in Matera Itinerary

Once known as “the shame of Italy”, Matera has gone through a drastic transformation and is now a prime travel spot in Italy, with Michelin restaurants and fancy spa hotels residing in the caves. 

With one day in Matera, you’ll have the chance to walk through the history of this incredibly interesting city and leave feeling inspired by the city risen from the caves.

Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario

A great way to begin your day in Matera is to spend time learning about the Sassi and what life was like for those living within the caves.

I recommend heading to the museum, Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario or “Cave House in the Sassi”. The house is where a peasant family in Matera lived up until 1956 before being relocated to the new part of the city during evacuation. 

Here you can see what life was like for those living within the caves up until the last century as well as learn more about the history of the city. The museum is open every day.

Sassi di Matera 

The Sassi of Matera are what make up the historic area of the city and what you have probably seen in pictures of Matera. These prehistoric cave dwellings are where the first inhabitants of Italy lived and have gone through many phases throughout history. 

Later, the Sassi became overcrowded, dark, and without most of the necessary means to live comfortably in the modern day. Thankfully in 1945, these poor conditions were brought to light by author Carlo Levi prompting attention by the government which led to the creation of modern Matera. 

Everyone that was living within the Sassi was evacuated to new Matera, leaving the ancient city void, empty, and full of secrets and history. What was left behind is now a thriving attraction. 

Some have moved back into these renovated caves, and some are hotels and restaurants, but the Sassi in its entirety is just pure magic.

Sassi District

After learning more about the Sassi and its past residents while being immersed in the way life was once, take some time to explore the Sassi district and the unique and exciting things within it.

While wandering the Sassi of Matera, there’s no doubt that you’ll feel as if you’ve ended up in a nativity scene. Numerous films have been filmed here yet as much as you feel like you’re on a film set – you’re in the living breathing history of one of the oldest cities on earth. 

It’s an easy joy to get lost while exploring the Sassi and you don’t know what you’ll come across next or the unbelievable views just waiting around the corner. 

There’s a plethora of artisanal shops throughout the district as well as great bars and restaurants featuring local Materan and Basilicatan dishes. Check out Osteria San Francesco to enjoy a delicious local meal within the Sassi for lunch. 

Another great way to spend time within the Sassi is to take part in a guided tour . While a lot of locations are still quite valuable with your own independent research, learning about the city with a local that may even have a personal history within the city is completely worth it. 

You’ll learn the world behind what you’re walking through and this can only enrich your experience during your Matera itinerary.

Duomo of Matera 

Like any other city in Italy, Matera has an abundance of churches and museums to visit that are unique and offer stunning views as well. After wandering throughout the Sassi from the outside and 

Dedicated to Saint Mary the patron saint of the city, is the cathedral (duomo) of Matera dividing the two Sassi. You’ll see the tower of the cathedral from pretty much any point in the city and it can’t be missed during a Matera day trip from Bari.

The cathedral was built in Puglian Romanesque style dating back to the 13th century and offers some of the most dramatic views of the city. 

I suggest visiting at night if you don’t have an interest in visiting the inside of the church. This way you’ll have the opportunity to see the city light up from below.   

MUSMA 

Located within a 16th-century cave palace is the MUSMA – the Matera Museum of Contemporary Sculpture. This museum is a great option to visit if you’re tired of churches and older museums and would like to experience something a bit more unique in the city. 

It’s known as one of the most important museums in the city offering a wonderful collection of contemporary art and sculpture. 

Santa Maria di Idris 

If you’re looking for more of a unique church to visit during your day trip to Matera, head to the Santa Maria di Idris located in the upper part of the Sassi near San Pietro Caveoso. 

The Santa Maria di Idris church goes back to the fifteenth century and is located within a rock complex as its cave dwelling.

The church itself is quite small in comparison to the cathedral, with just one room making up the interior, but is worth the visit due to its unique location and history. There are quite remarkable views from the area around the Santa Maria di Idris church as well.

Belvedere Murgia Timone Hike

Matera is perched on a plateau above a ravine that surrounds the city and surrounding the ravine are more cave structures where the first people inhabited the city.

One of the most unique things to do in Matera is to walk along the ravine and take in the most magnificent views of the Sassi.

The route from start to finish is just under 3 miles or 5 km, so it’s quite feasible even if you’re someone that doesn’t typically spend time hiking. Plan to spend at least 2 ½ hours of your day on the hike so you’re not rushing for time.

If you’re doing the hike in the warmer weather, make sure you have enough water to last for the hike since once you reach the bottom area of the trail, there won’t be anywhere to buy or get fresh water.

To reach the route that will take you through the ravine, first go to Porto Pistola which is close to “Chiesa di San Pietro Caveoso” on the west side of Sassi district, and take the stairs. A great way to know you’ve arrived at the right entry point is to look for the parking lot named “Parcheggio via Madonna delle Virtu”, which is also convenient if you’re driving to the trail.

From here you’ll be entering the Parco della Murgia Materana. You’ll then be led to a few different bridges that will bring you downwards into the canyon and the pathway along the ravine. 

Along the way are a few churches dating back to the 7th century such as Chiesa Rupestre Sant’Agnese, Chiesa Rupestre di San Falcione, and Chiesa Rupestre Madonna delle Tre Porte. The Chiesa Rupestre Madonna delle Tre Porte gained in popularity since being the site of crucifixion in the filming of Passion of the Christ. 

After the Chiesa Rupestre Madonna delle Tre Porte, you’ll want to make your way back to the side of the canyon that is near the suspension bridge. From here you’ll have the chance to witness some of the most remarkable panoramic views of the ancient city of Matera. 

Once you’ve reached the side of the canyon and took in the city from below, the only way to get back to town and the starting point of the trail is to follow the same trail in the opposite direction. The benefit of this is if you want to check out any of the churches or views again, this is your opportunity! 

Palombaro Lungo – Cathedral of Water 

Another unique site to visit while spending one day in Matera is the Palombaro Lungo. During the construction of Piazza Vittoria Veneto in 1991, this large public water cistern was discovered under the city of Matera. 

Access to water within the residences of the Sassi had always been quite difficult and took creativity to have access to enough water. The houses were equipped with a cistern dug deep within the home but as the population grew quickly with the city, the Palombaro Lungo was built. 

Visiting the Palombaro Lungo is a distinctive experience as you’ll likely find few other places in the world where you can visit such a complex labyrinth of a huge water system underground. 

The museum is open every day and is also the perfect opportunity to escape the heat from above if you’re visiting in the summer! 

Have 2 Days in Matera?

If you are planning to spend more than one day in Matera and would like to see more of what the city was like to live in historically, Casa Noha is also a great place to check out.

Located near the Cathedral of Matera, Casa Noha is an immersive experience that from the moment you walk into the caved home, you feel as if you’ve been transported back in time.

Materasum Ipogeo

If you’ve explored the city of Matera enough from above, head underground to the Materasum Ipogeo to experience an entirely different world from below. 

1,200 square meters below ground you’ll discover a city of homes, streets, cisterns, and churches. It’s incredible to see the things that people were capable of in some of the most ancient times and walking among that history is something that can’t be missed on any Matera itinerary. 

The museum is open every day and tickets include an audio tour for your visit.

Stay in a Cave Hotel

If your Matera itinerary includes more than one day and your budget allows, an unforgettable experience overnight is to stay in one of the many restored cave hotels that are now in Matera. 

There are few experiences more special than falling asleep and waking up within an ancient cave surrounded by memories from some of the first inhabitants of Italy.

Matera day trip from Bari – Day tour to discover European capital of culture 2019 & UNESCO World Heritage Site

The tour will begin with your private driver and local guide collecting you from your hotel in Bari (another custom location in the area can be agreed) with a luxury sedan or minivan.

After 1.5H drive you will reach Matera, whose configuration and contrasting landscapes won a UNESCO World Heritage Site title at 1993. With your private guide, you’ll explore the architecture of the characteristic town walking through its streets and see location sites such as Sassi, an ancient city whose origins are lost in prehistory, and is rightly considered to be one of the world’s oldest human dwellings, and geologically recalls the ancient Jerusalem and Cappadocia.

You will get the chance to walk through the so called “underground city,” which is made ​​of caves, with houses carved into the rock, rock churches with frescoes and ancients buildings. Matera is also highly appreciated as a place to shoot movies, such as “King David”, “The Passion of the Christ” and many others.

Starting from the area called “the Piano”, the last level of urban development on top of Sassi, you will proceed along paths, alleys and stairs, which will enable you to descend into past. The route is studded with numerous stops, such as entrances to rock churches, cave houses, water collection systems, and cellars dug in caves. Your guide will help you understand many aspects that determined the lifestyle in Sassi.

How to get from Bari to Matera

Naturally, after spending a couple of days in Puglia , you are planning a day trip from Bari to Matera. Why wouldn’t you? After all, seeing the Sassi di Matera is a must-do on any Italy lover’s bucket list .

If you recognize yourself in the description above, this is the guide you have been looking for. 

I will break down all the transportation options, including my favorite one, for traveling between the two charming destinations.

Can you do a day trip from Bari to Matera?

Of course, that is absolutely possible, and you have countless options to get there and back. 

While I loved Matera and wish I could have spent at least one night in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, one day is enough to explore the city’s most important attractions: the Sassi di Matera and the Park of Rupestrian Churches. 

How to travel from Bari to Matera?

Travel by car.

Traveling by car is the fastest and easiest option. 

Driving around Southern Italy might be intimidating for some people, but if I could do it, so can you. Just pay extra attention to the other drivers, and respect the rules. 

Take Strada Statale 96 (SS96) from Bari to Matera through Altamura, and you will drive the 66 kilometers in roughly 1 hour .

You can stop in the ancient town of Altamura for a few hours if you are planning to spend the night in Matera. 

Here are a few tips and things to have in mind when driving in Italy :

• You can drive with any EU-issued license, including those issued in the UK (despite Brexit). But if you are coming from the US, for example, you need to obtain an International Driving Permit before you leave home. Check requirements before traveling to Italy.  Read more about how to obtain one  here .
• Expect a manual car – if you rent a car on a budget, there is a high chance it will have a manual gearbox,
• Practice your parking skills – parking in Italy is an experience in itself, especially in places like Rome, Naples, or even Milan. Italians park their cars very close to each other, and sometimes cars even touch each other!
• Choose a small car—the smaller, the better, especially when you explore smaller towns. The roads are narrow and paved with cobblestone. 
• Don’t leave your valuables inside the car, and make sure to always book insurance.

Travel by bus

There are a few bus options that link Bari to Matera. 

The bus ride will be around 1 hour and 15 minutes long, and the price depends on the company, departure time, and boarding location .

Normally, there is a bus leaving from Bari’s Train Station and another one leaving from Bari International Airport. 

Use Bookaway.com to check the bus timetable and prices and book your return ticket online if you want to plan your entire trip. Pay extra attention to the returning bus schedule and make sure there is a bus returning in the afternoon of the same day. 

Travel by train

I have always loved to travel by train when I was in Italy. However, in Southern Italy, this might prove to be a little bit more challenging. 

While trains are running through Puglia and Basilicata, timetables and connections may not be the best. Also, smaller towns are harder to reach by train. 

When it comes to traveling from Bari Centrale to Matera by train, that is not impossible, but it is a longer ride, and you will have to change trains once you are in Altamura. 

Here are 2 possible options from Trenitalia’s website . These are regional trains, and the tickets cannot be purchased online. 

That means you will have to arrive early at the train station to buy the ticket. Additionally, don’t forget to validate the ticket before getting on the train. 

Alternatively, check the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane website for the exact train timetable and for the option to book online. The prices start at 5-6 EUR, and the website is in Italian. 

How to reach to Sassi district from Matera Centrale

From the Central Train Station in Matera to the Sassi, you will have to walk for around 18 minutes. There is no bus or other option to get there. 

Pass through Via Lucana and admire the 16th-century Castello Tramontano. 

Book a guided tour

We usually choose guided tours when we want to see as much as possible in a short time.  This way, we can rest on the journey and don’t have to worry about filling up the tank, getting lost, or finding parking spaces.

Therefore, if you don’t want to rent a car for your Bari to Matera trip, I would advise a guided tour.

The fastest and easiest way is to travel by car. When you book in advance, that shouldn’t be expensive either. 

What is the cheapest option?

Flixbus has a few cheap bus rides linking the two towns, but you won’t have much flexibility when it comes to the schedule. 

Alternatively, take the train and book it on Ferrovie Appulo Lucane .

What is my advice?

I strongly recommend renting a car and exploring Puglia and Basilicata, in addition to Matera and Bari. There are so many beautiful destinations you will fall in love with.

The Cammino Materano covers 168.3km between Bari and Matera, on an inland idyll of a trek across Roman roads, medieval paths and shepherds’ trails across the Puglia and Basilicata. This seven day, self-guided walking holiday takes you along the whole trail, exploring a hinterland where highlights include Bari’s Basilica di San Nicola, the region’s famous trulli houses, the handsome and historic town of Altamura and, last but not least, the UNESCO town of Matera, with its famous ancient rock churches and stone houses. Day 1: arrival in bari.

Welcome to Bari. Depending on your arrival time, take some time to explore the capital of Puglia, with highlights including Basilica di San Nicola.

Day 2: Bitetto – Cassano delle Murge | 26km

The morning begins with a short train journey to Bitetto. Stroll through the olive groves the area is known for, before continuing toward Cassano delle Murge, passing meadows, farmland and tradtitional trulli buildings along the way.

• Walking for the day: 26km, ↑320m, ↓100m

Day 3: Cassano delle Murge – Santeramo in Colle | 22km

Begin by walking up Altopiano delle Murge, before following the route along the Acquedotto Pugliese. From here, the trail continues past natural caves and ancient farmhouses before coming to a close in Santeramo in Colle.

• Walking for the day: 22km, ↑370m, ↓230m

Day 4: Santeramo in Colle – Altamura | 27km

Today’s route continues across Altopiano delle Murge, passing Grotta di Sant’Angelo, multiple frescoes and a small Romanesque church. Continue on to Altamura, a town with an array of medieval architecture, and don’t miss a visit to its cathedral.

• Walking for the day: 27km, ↑290m, ↓300m

Day 5: Altamura – Gravina in Puglia | 20km

Today’s walk begins in wide open, rural landscapes typical of inland Puglia. Follow an ancient paved road toward Gravina in Puglia, with historical sites dating back to the Neolithic age.

• Walking for the day: 20km, ↑170m, ↓300m.

Day 6: Lago di San Giuliano – Matera | 16km

The morning begins with a short transfer to Oasi San Giuliano, the largest nature reserve in the province. Stop to enjoy Lago di San Giuliano, before continuing along the Bradano River. The last stretch is uphill and offers views of famous UNESCO town of Matera, before descending towards the town itself, where you spend your final night.

Difficulty and terrain

This tour is rated moderate and is suitable for walkers with a good level of fitness. Daily walks range from 16-27km, with significant differences in height, so participants should have a good level of walking experience. The routes mainly follow dirt paths and paved roads ( read more about difficulty grades ).

This tour is available to book from the beginning of February until mid-July and from the beginning of September until the end of November. July and August are very hot for walking and the route has little shelter from the sun. The flexibility of self-guided holidays means that there are no fixed dates, and you can start your trip on any date during the season.
