Looking for the best vintage shops in New York ?

Then you’re in the right place!

Shopping in New York City is a tough adventure to make it through as is; but, when you’re sifting through the vintage clothing scene, it gets all the more difficult.

Seeing as New York is full of stores that claim to be vintage and thrifty , you may end up doing plenty of pursuing and finding nothing – though luckily this city is also full of gems just waiting to be unearthed .

If you’re interested in being the one to dust them off, you should check out these top spots for vintage shopping in NYC , which are some of my personal favorites as a local New Yorker.

Bonus: These shops are also great if you’re looking for the best New York souvenirs that go beyond cheesy novelty store finds.

Want beautiful photos taken of you in scenic New York spots? Book one of our  Private Photo Journeys , a walking tour that includes photos of your group to keep. Or get a styled, custom shoot that tells your unique story through an  NYC Influencer Shoot  or  Professional New York City Shoot . Email  [email protected]  with inquiries.

1. L Train Vintage

Locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan

For some of the best vintage shopping in New York, check out L Train Vintage. With three locations in Brooklyn and one location in the East Village, this is one of the best NYC vintage shops where you can find some incredible secondhand clothing and accessories.

As the name suggests, all of these shops are located off the L train, so if you can’t find what you’re looking for at one of them, just hop on the train and check out the next location!

2.  AuH2O Thriftique

84 E 7th Street, Manhattan

If you’re really looking to get thrifty, then look no further. Despite the small size of the store, AuH2O is guaranteed to have something you want.

This small boutique understands the struggle and aims to put forward an affordable and accessible selection. Most items in the store are under $25 – not to mention the $5 and $10 racks.

The best part is, rather than packing the cozy space with as many clothes as possible, AuH2O focuses on quality.

This shop is curated and handpicks every item in its stock to ensure the selection is wide and distinctive. So while this may not be the perfect store for your specific wants, it is a store that was meant to be browsed through.

Everything from handwoven dresses to vintage leather purses awaits you, and it’s all begging to be purchased!

vintage shopping in NYC at Beacon's Closet

3.  Beacon’s Closet

10 w 13th Street, Manhattan & Brooklyn locations in Bushwick, Greenpoint, and Park Slope

Prepare to breathe in style with Beacon’s Closet. Everything from the clothing selection to the design of the store takes a fashion-forward approach.

If you manage to survive beyond the fairy lights and glamorous mannequins, it’s the shoes that’ll strike you next.

What this shop offers is not your usual selection of footwear, so you’re bound to find what you’re looking for, along with something more.

And once you’ve found the perfect shoes, you’ll have no trouble putting together the perfect outfit, especially as the merchandise is organized by color!

The simplified search will bring you through a massive selection of high-end designers – everything from Alexander Wang to Victoria Beckham – all reasonably priced!

This franchise thrives for a reason. They’ve strived to establish their brand as trendy and they’ve been more than successful in doing so.

4. Metropolis Vintage

803 Broadway, Manhattan

For all your hardcore throwback needs, Metropolis is the place to be; it only takes a few seconds of sifting through the racks for this to become apparent.

Another shop well known for t-shirts, Metropolis offers everything from vintage Prince tees to souvenir Return of the Jedi shirts.

Whether you’re looking at the valuable collectibles on the walls or the hidden treasures in the $7 bins, the selection is wide and you’re bound to find something of interest.

If you manage to wrench yourself away from the tees, you’ll find that the venue is rather extensive with its vintage selection.

They offer everything from genuine military jackets to the sort of 80’s boots you’ve only ever seen on TV. The store, overall, bleeds authenticity in a manner that’s easy to appreciate.

5.  Cure Thrift Shop

91 3rd Ave, Manhattan

This softly lit vintage shop has a boutique-like feel to it; something that comes as a surprise considering the size of its space. But despite its two floors of room, Cure manages to be crammed with products – which works out perfectly because it promises variety!

And sure enough, while clothing dominates the store quantity-wise, there are always a number of other things to catch your attention.

The ever-changing selection of antique furniture practically lines the walls; not to mention the scattered selection of quirky accessories that accompanies it.

Racks upon racks of scarves, earrings, artwork, and what can only be described as conversation pieces litter the store too.

And while their products may lean towards the expensive side, one of the best things about Cure is the fact that all proceeds are donated directly to the Diabetes Research Institute , so your money goes to a great cause.

6. Buffalo Exchange

Buffalo Exchange is actually a national chain of secondhand stores, so it may not be as unique as some of the other New York City vintage shops on this list, but it’s still a great place to look for secondhand clothing, shoes, and accessories at reasonable prices.

There are five Buffalo Exchange locations across New York, with three in Manhattan and two in Brooklyn. All of the stores are quite large, so you’ll find lots of variety.

7. 2nd Street

2nd Street is another one of the top spots for New York vintage shopping.

It originated in Japan, but now there are seven different locations around NYC. You’ll find 2nd Street in the Upper East Side, Chelsea, Union Square, NoHo, SoHo, the Lower East Side, and DUMBO.

This is a great place to shop if you are looking for vintage streetwear and designer clothing. Because of this, it can be a pricier place to shop, but you can still score some good deals.

8. Chickee’s Vintage

135 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn

Chickee’s Vintage is one of the best vintage shops in NYC, favored by fashion editors, celebrities, and other trendsetters.

This smaller shop located in Williamsburg doesn’t have a huge selection, but it prioritizes quality over quantity.

You can find some really cool pieces at Chickee’s Vintage, including vintage designer clothing and basic staples that never go out of style.

9. 10ft Single by Stella Dallas

285 N 6th St, Brooklyn

Another one of the best vintage stores in New York is 10ft Single by Stella Dallas. This is a large store in Williamsburg that has a varied selection of vintage clothing, shoes, and accessories.

Williamsburg is one of the best neighborhoods for vintage shopping in NYC, so it’s no surprise that you’ll find this popular mainstay in the neighborhood too.

One of the best things about 10ft Single by Stella Dallas is that you can find funkier and more offbeat pieces. There’s also a selection of antique and vintage home goods here.

10. Mr. Throwback

437 E 9th St, Manhattan

Mr. Throwback is a niche vintage shop in New York that specializes in vintage sportswear from the 1980s and 1990s.

Located in the East Village, this shop boasts an impressive array of vintage apparel and merchandise for NBA, MLB, NFL, and NHL sports teams.

Although it focuses primarily on vintage sportswear, you can also find a selection of throwback toys and video games as well as secondhand sneakers at Mr. Throwback.

shirts on a rack at a vintage shop in New York City

53 Stanton St, Manhattan

Tucked away in a small shop front in the Lower East Side, Rogue is another gem for vintage shopping in NYC.

You’ll find vintage clothing from a variety of decades here, but an especially good selection of early 2000s clothing.

Perfect for hopping on the popular Y2K trend, Rogue is a great place to shop if you are looking for funky and unique secondhand clothing and accessories.

12. Grand Street Local

154 Grand St, Brooklyn

While you’re perusing the many vintage shops in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, don’t miss popping into Grand Street Local.

This is a cool vintage store with a varied selection and lots of one-of-a-kind pieces you can’t find anywhere else.

Although some of these rare prices can be on the pricier side, this is the perfect place to shop if you’re looking for really unique vintage clothing and accessories.

Vintage Shopping Tour in New York City: The best vintage and thrift shops NYC

vintage shopping tour nyc

Join me on an unforgettable vintage shopping tour in the vibrant city of New York. Experience the thrill of uncovering one-of-a-kind treasures as we explore the best thrift stores and flea markets the city has to offer.

Crossroads Trading: Discover Fashion Through the Eras

My vintage shopping tour began at Crossroads Trading, located at 24 W 26th St, New York, NY 10001. This trendy thrift store offers a curated selection of secondhand clothing and accessories. As soon as I stepped inside, I was greeted by racks filled with fashionable pieces from various eras. Though more modern than retro, there was something for every style and taste. What I loved most about Crossroads Trading was the quality of the items with reasonable price points (some items even still had their original tags!).

Goodwill NYNJ Store & Donation Center: Shop for a Cause

Next on my list was the Goodwill NYNJ Store & Donation Center, situated at 103 W 25th St, New York, NY 10001. Goodwill is known for its extensive collection of pre-loved items, and this location did not disappoint. As I browsed through the aisles, I was amazed by the sheer variety of clothing, shoes, and accessories available but also how organized everything was, a far cry from UK Charity shops! From designer labels to unique vintage pieces, Goodwill had so much to offer. What’s even better is that by shopping here, all proceeds from Goodwill stores go towards job training and employment programs.

T.J. Maxx: Designer Finds at Discounted Prices

I then headed to T.J. Maxx on 6th Avenue to to see what discounted designer items they had to offer. While not exclusively a thrift store, T.J. Maxx offers a dedicated section for pre-loved vintage designer pieces that were a fraction of their original price. Whether you seek classic vintage styles or modern fashion, TJ Maxx promises an array of options to satisfy your style cravings.

Housing Works Thrift Shops – Chelsea: Vintage Treasures for a Cause

No vintage shopping tour in New York City would be complete without a visit to Housing Works Thrift Shop. I made my way to their Chelsea location at 143 W 17th St, and I was immediately drawn in by the cozy atmosphere and the vast array of vintage treasures. From clothing to home decor, Housing Works had a huge variety of vintage. My favourite part of this store was the incredible vintage jewellery cabinet! I bought two silver vintage choker necklaces for $20 each, which was really good value.

What sets this thrift shop apart is its commitment to supporting those affected by HIV/AIDS. All the proceeds from their stores go towards funding healthcare, housing, and other vital services for individuals in need. Shopping here not only allows you to find unique vintage pieces but also helps make a positive impact on the community.

Artists & Fleas Chelsea: Celebrating Local Art and Vintage Finds

To conclude my vintage shopping tour, I visited Artists & Fleas Chelsea, which is located at 88 10th Ave. This vibrant marketplace showcases the work of local artists, designers, and vintage collectors. As I wandered through the stalls, I was amazed by the creativity and talent on display. From vintage clothing and accessories to handmade jewelry and art, there was an endless selection of one-of-a-kind treasures. Artists & Fleas Chelsea truly celebrates the spirit of vintage and provides a platform for independent artists to showcase their craft.

“This experience was SO worth the money!”

vintage shopping tour nyc

We give you exemplary personal care & attention. Our tour guides work with you to find the pieces that represent who you are and how you want to dress. All style personalities are welcome here and it is our honor to support you in having an easy, manageable and inspiring shopping experience.

You leave feeling like a secondhand style star – because your life is a stage, and we want you to dress the way you want to for it!

This is an all-ages, all-sizes, all-genders and sexual orientation friendly tour and shopping experience. After meeting to discuss your shopping wish list at a trendy Manhattan hotel lobby, you step foot onto the busy streets of the city and head to your shops, flea markets and other chosen shopping spots. By the end of this minimum four-hour experience, you’ll not only have bags and bags of finds but you’ll leave feeling like thrift family.

Why You Should Book a Secondhand Shopping Experience

There’s nothing no better “sustainable travel” than shopping for secondhand and vintage clothes in a major metropolitan city. It doesn’t even have to be New York City – here at The Ultimate Secondhand Shopping Experience, we encourage you to shop thrift stores and resale shops whenever you travel! This is because you get an insider perspective of the culture of an area by visiting its thrift stores. You’ll most likely visit a neighborhood or a street you would have passed normally. And, you have access to the local fashion trends of a region, state, city or town. When we travel Europe, for example, we love thrifting and flea market shopping because we learn so much about what’s “popular” right now and can sometimes score a trend before it’s even hit the states.

The reasons to shop second hand when visiting NYC are pretty much endless. But a few more we want to point out:

  • It’s an excellent bonding opportunity for families
  • Mother/daughters LOVE it
  • Spend money affordably … and not on overpriced box stores
  • Shop with locals and learn more about NYC through their lens
  • Find something you’d “never find in your town”
  • Did we mention that NYC is the fashion capital of the world?
  • Tax free clothing, shoes, and accessories up to $110 in the state of NY
  • Create memories that last, be it with friends, family, or just yourself!

What Others Have To Say About Us

This was our second private shopping experience with sammy i would have booked her again, because of her expertise in ny, vintage shopping and figuring out our styles my 15 year old’s favorite part … the giant bags of clothes we brought home, becki, minneapolis, absolutely loved it this is an interesting way to experience the city i was able to walk away with around 9 pieces, most of them from isra’s recommendations, varying from sweaters, dresses to outerwear, victoria, china, this experience was amazing, and samantha was awesome. the atmosphere was very uplifting and i felt like i made new friends. i feel like this was a once in a lifetime experience that is a must do for any visit to new york (especially if you love shopping and fashion)., bethany, seattle, samantha is an enthusiastic “thrift store mom,” and our group of 5 (3 women under 30, 1 in her 60s, and a male in his 70s) enjoyed her energy and help in our search for great deals in 3 thrift stores / consignment stores in the chelsea area, sandra, california, isra did an amazing job in helping us select items. my daughter walked away with so many outfits and we all had a blast. i would love to come back again in the future, karen, canada, meet your secondhand shopping guides & experts.

Samantha “Sammy” Davis founded the Ultimate Secondhand Shopping Experience in 2018. She thought it would be “something fun to do.” Little did she know that the tour would grow, and grow, and grow! It was like the universe was telling her “to do this!”

But let’s back up for a second. Sammy has been a secondhand shopper since she was 16 years old. She never thought it would turn “into her career.” Today, not only is she the owner and founder of this experience but also a full time reseller and resale marketplace owner and coach.

When not running one of her many businesses she is in the thrift trenches with you – finding the pieces you love to wear and creating more ease, joy and accessibility to your Big Apple shopping experience.

Most private tours will be hosted by Sammy, who travels between Baltimore and NYC. When booking a customizable or all-day marathon shopping tour, you are booking with Sammy who will create, guide and experience your day with you.

Thank you to the guests of the Ultimate Secondhand Shopping experience for making this is the #1 reviewed shopping tour in all of NYC!

Isra is an Iraqi-Swedish actor and writer based out of Brooklyn, New York. She joined the Ultimate NYC Secondhand Shopping Experience in October 2021! Her enthusiasm and wit, plus an eye for the trends and what will fit your style personality, make her an exceptional guide and secondhand stylist for your shopping experience.

Isra describes her personal style as a mix of “Swedish minimalism and funky NYC flair.” She’s literally shopped secondhand all around the globe, from Stockholm to London to Berlin and more! Many of our guests have been quoted saying, “Isra quickly became our shopping BFF!”

When not secondhand shopping on her own or leading a tour, she’s building her acting career here in the Big Apple! Isra has been featured on Amazon Prime, internationally televised commercials and on stage in Los Angeles and beyond.

Most group tours will have the pleasure of working with Isra as their guide, stylist, and “thrift mom” (you’ll learn what that is exactly — on the tour!).

25 NYC Vintage & Thrift Stores in Manhattan

Rebecca Olshan

Now heading over to Chelsea and the Village…

One of the most unique shops on this list is Shareen Vintage located on the second floor at 13 W 17th Street. This shop began as a regular vintage shop but slowly progressed into a primarily vintage wedding gown shop, full of dresses the owner has made from vintage pieces sewn together.

shareens vintage

Down the road from Shareen at 104 W 17th Street is Pippin Vintage Jewelry . This shop is the perfect stop for anyone looking to spice up their outfits with some new (or technically not so new) bling with their rows of gorgeous vintage pieces.

At 146 W 4th Street is Hamlet’s Vintage , selling both men’s and women’s clothing as well as accessories and some furniture from anywhere between the 1940s and 1980s. Nearby the Flatiron Building at 117 W 25th Street is New York Vintage , well-known in the city for having an array of dramatic styles to peruse.

hamlet's vintage store

Metropolis Vintage at 803 Broadway is a can’t-miss for those looking to bring back the era of retro graphic tees. With anything from hippie shirts from the sixties to grungy nineties band tees, Metropolis Vintage has it all. Heading further south again is Cure Thrift Shop at 91 3rd Ave. A slightly more upscale vintage store, Cure has a refined selection of the most tasteful vintage clothes and furniture around.

Screaming Mimis Vintage at 240 W 14th Street is not for the faint of heart. With a massively diverse collection of eccentric hats, wigs, and clothing galore, you have to be invested to avoid getting overwhelmed.

Vintage Thrift Shop at 286 3rd Ave is a nonprofit vintage store with a large variety of unique items, glassware, furniture, books, and clothes. At this store not only will you find any vintage item you could be in search of, but you will also do so helping out a greater cause, the United Jewish Council of the East Side.

Overflowing with new outfit inspiration is Funny Pretty Nice , a colorful shop selling trendy vintage clothes and jewelry at 64 MacDougal Street. L Train Vintage at 204 1st Ave is lined with row after row of vintage clothing and shoes, from old sports jerseys and Hawaiian shirts to used Jordans and high heels. Around the corner at 437 E 9th Street is Mr. Throwback . Specializing in 1990s sports apparel, shoes, video games, and more, this niche shop knows its audience well.

Down the road at 346 E 9th Street is 9th Street Vintage , which sells primarily women’s apparel from before the 1960s. Over at 545 E 12th Street is the East Village Vintage Collective . The Collective is a groovy little shop with a vibrant selection of retro clothing and gizmos.

What Goes Around Comes Around

The best vintage stores in NYC

From retro wares to one-of-a-kind statement pieces, these vintage shops are stocked with stylish treasures

Some of the best (and, graciously, cheapest) clothing stores in NYC happen to be vintage stores. Personally, we think shopping vintage is always a good idea. For one, shopping secondhand helps the planet by reducing excess waste, but it also allows you to scoop up unique duds no one else has. Can’t afford $400 Chanel pumps or high-end retro clothes? No biggie: New York has a ton of economical options to make your wardrome dreams come to true. After making a profit by selling any outdated duds at thrift stores or consignment shops , go back to these prime vintage stores, snag a few unique throwbacks and style an outfit that will make you feel like a million bucks (but for way less).

Best vintage stores in NYC

Mirth Vintage

1.  Mirth Vintage

Women who appreciate a color-coordinated closet (guilty!) will love Mirth Vintage, as the store — which hawks mostly monochrome, timeless duds — is handily organized by hue. At the Greenpoint shop, sift the racks for wares and accessories (bags, shoes, belts and some jewelry) from the early 20th century to the early aughts.

Spark Pretty

2.  Spark Pretty

  • East Village

No shop in New York understands the need to express yourself through a cold-weather protector than one of Manhattan's most vibrant vintage shops, Spark Pretty. After the success of the store's '90's Forever pop-up, owners Amanda Dolan and Meagan Colby put down permanent roots in the East Village in 2018. The aesthetic is a combination of “I Want My MTV” meets '80’s hair bands, crossed with the flash of '70’s glam-rock. We dig it. We're particularly loving the early-90s Barbie tees, the rainbow-bright ravewear and the crystal-encrusted, hand-painted Tony Alamo jean jackets. You'll also find other throwback apparel items including bellbottoms, studded skinny jeans, pins, patches and shoes.

Metropolis Vintage

3.  Metropolis Vintage

  • Thrift stores
  • price 3 of 4

Countless celebs call Metropolis a favorite shopping destination: Drake, Bella Hadid, and Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have all been snapped shopping at this nearly four-decade-old Greenwich Village spot. And no wonder —t he shop boasts one of the best vintage T-shirt collections in the city, as well as leather jackets, sports jerseys and breezy summer rompers. We fell in love with a black leather Coach purse covered in gold studs, along with a purple, black and shimmery silver zebra sweatshirt that brought us straight back to the ’90s.

Amarcord Vintage Fashion

4.  Amarcord Vintage Fashion

  • Consignment store
  • Williamsburg
  • price 2 of 4

Owners Patti Bordoni and Marco Liotta stock their shops with decades-old duds in pristine condition, sourced from frequent trips to their Italian homeland. Expect to find well-known Italian designers such as Gucci, Pucci and Valentino mixed in with other European labels that fit the shop’s edgy, mod aesthetic. During past visits, we discovered a multicolor button-up Versace blouse that’s so bold it needed no accessories, and there’s also a men’s section where you can find Euro-influenced clothing and a plentiful selection of buttery-soft T-shirts.

Breaking news, alec baldwin’s scuffle with anti-israel agitator ‘crackhead barney’ spilled onto sidewalk outside nyc coffee shop, photos show.

Alec Baldwin’s scuffle with a loudmouthed anti-Israel agitator at a New York City coffee shop spilled out onto the sidewalk, new photos obtained by The Post show.

An irate Baldwin, 66, was seen struggling with the woman out the front door and down the stoop of Maman, an upscale cafe on University Place in Greenwich Village, after she had accosted him inside on Monday and demanded he declare “Free Palestine” as she filmed him.

Footage of the encounter, first posted online by the woman herself, cut off after Baldwin took a swipe at her phone — and new photos appear to show him snatching the phone from her hand and using it to drive her out of the coffee shop.

The scene from outside Maman appeared to show the Emmy winner holding the woman’s phone out of her reach as she scrabbled up his arms after it.

They struggled down the stairs before the woman eventually got her hands on the device.

An infuriated Baldwin then stormed off down the sidewalk, coffee and car keys in hand.

The agitator is identified only as “Crackhead Barney,” a far-left activist who is known for ambush-style interviews and outrageous public performances.

Baldwin appeared to have snatched Crackhead Barney's phone out of her hands before leaving

In her original video, Crackhead Barney approached Baldwin and asked him to say “Free Palestine” as he talked on the phone and waited for his order.

“Alec, can you please say ‘Free Palestine’ one time?” she asked him several times, before promising to leave him alone if he’ll just say it once.

As he headed for the door shaking his head, she added ““F–k Israel, f–k Zionism.”

Baldwin appeared to keep Crackhead Barney's phone away as he tried to make her leave

“Why did you kill that lady? You killed that lady and got no jail time,” she said at one point, referring to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed on the set of Baldwin’s movie “Rust” when a prop gun he was shooting wound up loaded with a live bullet .

After Baldwin got Crackhead Barney out of the restaurant he deadbolted the door to keep her out, footage she posted showed.

She then stalked about outside talking to herself about how Baldwin had “assaulted me, I should press charges,” while calling random passersby racists and “Zionist bitches.”

Crackhead Barney had accosted Baldwin inside the downtown coffee shop moments earlier

“My performance art and confrontational media is a statement about the double standards of society in the US,” Crackhead Barney said in a statement after the incident.

“As the US supports Israel in the genocide of Palestinians, here at home, powerful people maintain a facade of politeness and dignity while we export death and terror around the world,” she continued.

“Amidst mass protests and public calls for an end to US support of Israel, the entertainment industry has been largely silent, and even worse, supportive of Israel’s genocide.

“This cannot stand, and people deserve to be confronted with the horrors our nation funds and supports.”

Crackhead Barney commands an audience of nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram.

Her recent videos largely consist of her swearing at cops and telling pro-Israel demonstrators such things as “You know they’re not coming home, right?” referring to hostages kidnapped by Hamas.

Baldwin’s run-in with Crackhead Barney was not the first time he’s been targeted by anti-Israel demonstrators.

In December, he was surrounded by protesters on the sidewalk who demanded to know whether he condemned Israel for their response to the Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack.

He refused to address Israel, and instead said “I support peace for Gaza.”

“Go f–k yourself,” a demonstrator yelled in response.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Fans theorize that Taylor Swift is changing her Eras Tour setlist to include songs from her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Swift shared a black-and-white video collage of her practicing for the upcoming leg of her tour and added her new single, “Fortnight,” in the background to YouTube Shorts on Thursday.

The Grammy winner, 34, included several snippets of her wearing different athleisure outfits while holding a microphone, singing and dancing on different parts of the stage.

The “Cruel Summer” songstress even featured a snap of her playing her acoustic guitar and sitting at her signature mossy piano.

However, some eagle-eyed fans noticed a few differences in some of the clips from what she’s done in her past shows –– such as her background dancers wearing black top hats and canes.

Swift also appeared to be leaning on a silver pole that seemed to have a white “TTPD” sign hanging on the side of it. Fans additionally pointed out her white guitar and matching microphone.

Swift will resume her tour in Paris in two weeks –– aka a fortnight –– on May 9.

Several fans flooded the comments pointing out the changes and wrote about how convinced they are she’ll be swapping some songs for “TTPD” hits.

Swift has not released the setlist for her upcoming shows and she did not share the setlist before she kicked off the tour in Arizona in March 2023.

The “Shake it Off” songstress previously sang 44 songs on every show and swapped out two songs each concert that were acoustic “surprise songs” not included in the same setlist.

After Paris, Swift will hit several European countries, including Sweden, Spain and Portugal, before wrapping up in London in August.

Lots of Italy, on Many Collectible Plates

Buon Ricordo plates were introduced 60 years ago at restaurants in Italy. The hand-painted ceramics can now be found at design trade shows and fancy décor stores.

Shelves filled with piles of colorful ceramic plates featuring whimsical hand-painted designs.

By Chantel Tattoli

For his 73rd birthday in April, Felice Macchi had lunch at La Bettola Del Gusto, a restaurant in Pompeii, Italy, with a focus on seafood.

He ordered the house specialty: spaghettoni, a thicker spaghetti, in a fermented anchovy sauce with black truffles and butter made with milk from water buffalo native to the Mediterranean region. The meal came on a ceramic plate with a whimsical hand-painted design depicting the spaghettoni dish and a smoking volcano, a nod to nearby Mount Vesuvius.

Mr. Macchi finished his meal — he said it was “excellent” — but did not leave the restaurant empty-handed. Instead of leftovers, he took home the plate his pasta was served on.

It was a new addition to a collection he has amassed of that type of Italian tableware, known as Buon Ricordo plates. He has hundreds of them, many of which he eats on. Others decorate hallways, the kitchen and the dining room of his home in Varese, Italy.

Since 2022, Mr. Macchi has been the president of the Buon Ricordo Plate Collectors Association . The group, which has about 400 members in Europe and South America, is planning an exhibition of the plates at the Fondazione Sant Elia , a museum in Palermo.

When asked why he started collecting the plates, Mr. Macchi, an insurance agent, answered romantically.

“Why do we fall in love with a woman?” he said.

The tableware was introduced as a marketing tool for an association of regional Italian restaurants, called the Buon Ricordo Union , formed in 1964. It can still be found at the union’s restaurants — as well as at Italian flea markets and antique sellers, design trade shows like Maison et Objet in Paris and high-end décor stores like ABC Carpet & Home in New York.

At the time the plates were introduced, local Italian cuisines were mostly prepared at home and largely seen as not worthy of serving at restaurants across Italy, many of which had French-influenced menus instead.

The idea for Buon Ricordo, which translates to “good memory” in English, came from Dino Villani, an Italian advertising executive who, among other accomplishments, founded the beauty contest now known as Miss Italy . He proposed the restaurant union as a way to promote and preserve regional Italian cooking at establishments in the country.

Restaurant owners who wanted to join had to show that they were using regional recipes and ingredients; joining the union has also required an annual fee. (This year, it was 1,000 euros.) In the 1980s, the union started to accept restaurants outside of Italy that adhered to its membership criteria.

Once part of the union, establishments received unique tableware designed to highlight their signature dishes, with each restaurant’s plate featuring its name and a hand-painted motif that often included cartoonish renderings of swordfish, rabbits, snails, cows or squid.

When a patron ordered a restaurant’s signature dish, it was served on a Buon Ricordo plate, which could be taken home as a keepsake — a practice that has more or less continued to this day at the union’s 112 restaurants, 11 of which are outside of Italy, in cities including Paris, Tokyo and New York. (These days, patrons of the restaurants receive the plates only if they order the house specialty as part of a multicourse Buon Ricordo tasting menu.)

Suki LaBarre, the vice president of merchandising and e-commerce at ABC Carpet & Home, said the store started carrying the plates in 2022; at first, it offered a small selection of about 50 pieces that she and a colleague chose after considering various designs for more than an hour. Last year, she ordered some 600 more plates for the store from a supplier that specializes in midcentury European decorative items.

“We’ve gone with the fish stories and not so much the meat,” Ms. LaBarre said of the types of motifs on the plates sold at ABC, which cost $60 a plate. She attributed the interest in the style partly to its playful aesthetic and partly to its history.

Daniele Tassi, 36, bought a few plates at ABC in February to use as décor at his Italian restaurant Terre, in Brooklyn. “I was surprised to see them there — but I understand why they are,” said Mr. Tassi, the chef at Terre, which he owns with Monia Solighetto and Alessandro Trezza, a married couple with Milanese roots.

In January, Terre became the first and only member of the Buon Ricordo Union in the United States. Ms. Solighetto, 49, said she wanted to join the union because it stands for Italy’s tradition of “eating locally and using quality, seasonal ingredients” — a tradition, she added, that is now also “trendy.”

At Terre, the signature dish is pappardelle pasta with a wild boar ragù, a family recipe Mr. Tassi was served regularly when he was growing up in Italy’s Umbria region. Except for the boar meat, which comes from Texas, the dish at Terre is made using ingredients from Italy.

It is served on Buon Ricordo plates with a design depicting the Italian and American flags and a gray boar standing in a coil of yellow pasta. They were produced at a factory in Vietri sul Mare, on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, which has been using local clay to make the tableware since it was introduced six decades ago.

On April 9, the Buon Ricordo Union had a dinner to celebrate its 60th anniversary in Vietri sul Mare. A special plate was issued for the occasion, and chefs from some 100 associated restaurants prepared a tasting menu. They included Mr. Tassi, who said he returned to Brooklyn after the event with dozens of Buon Ricordo plates; he picked up some from his grandparents, who had collected the tableware in the ’70s and ’80s, a time when interest in it was surging in Italy.

Mary Lies, 60, has been a fan of the plates ever since she noticed some at an antiques fair in Lucca, Italy, in the early 2000s. She has since been buying the tableware for herself and for her retail business, Mercato , in Kansas City, Kan., which sells it for $37 a plate.

Ms. Lies described the ceramics as a sort of instant mood lifter.

“Seeing them, you can’t help but smile,” she said.
