Zermatt, Matterhorn, Switzerland

Zermatt is one of the most beautiful and interesting ski resorts in Switzerland. No wonder that it's not the first time for the AirPano team to come here for creating panoramas and 360 video.

The settlement with the population of fewer than 6,000 people is surrounded by the majority of four-thousanders of the Pennine Alps such as Dufourspitze (4,634 m), the highest peak of Switzerland in the Monte Rosa massif, and the Matterhorn (4,478 m). On the slopes of the latter mountain, at the elevation of 1,608 m, there is the settlement of Zermatt.

Matterhorn, Switzerland

The landscapes are the main attraction of this area. The name of Zermatt derives from "matten" (in German) meaning "the alpine meadows". And the authorities very carefully preserve the natural heritage: the entire territory of Zermatt is closed for combustion-engine vehicles and all the transport in Zermatt is represented by electric cars and bicycles.

Zermatt, Matterhorn, Switzerland

Besides, the village has preserved its historical centre. There are picturesque temples in Zermatt, such as the Church of St. Mauritius. The first historical record of this church dates from 1285. In the 1980ies, it was renovated but it has saved its main ancient outlines.

Today's luxurious hotels that appeared due to the growing popularity of the resort stand in interesting contrast to the architecture of the previous centuries.

The legendary peak of the Matterhorn, as well as Zermatt, got the name after beautiful meadow landscapes. The mountain has a unique pyramidal shape with four faces nearly facing the four compass points. The southern slope descends to the Italian side, the other three slopes are on the Swiss side.

Matterhorn, Switzerland

Even though the Matterhorn is only the 5th highest Alpine summit, it is one of the most difficult mountains for ascending among its neighbours. The main hazard is the unpredictable weather when low clouds surround the summit forming thick lasting fog. Rockfalls, storms and snow are the challenges to the people willing to summit this mountain.

Matterhorn, Switzerland

Another great landmark of Zermatt is the Gornergrat railway, the second-highest railway in Europe after the Jungfrau and the first rack railway in the world to be electrified. The line opened in 1898, and it still connects the village with the summit of the Gornergrat.

The Gornergrat railway station at the altitude of 3,089 m offers fantastic views of the Alpine mountain ridge. Just at the summit, there is also the Gornergrat Kulm Hotel. This unusual hotel appeared in 1907, and 90 years later, two observatories were built on each of the two towers of the hotel. The clean air and the mountainous area create the perfect conditions for exploring the stars.

On the way to this wonderful mountain, at the altitude of 2,757 m, there is the lake of Riffelsee. On a clear day, one can see the reflection of the snow-covered pyramid of Matterhorn on its surface.

The Gornergrat Railway has become more up-to-date and eco-friendly. It is equipped with a special braking system that generates electricity at the descend, thereby allowing to save energy.

Have an incredible journey with AirPano!

Virtual tour (climb) of the matterhorn in zermatt, switzerland.

Come, take a virtual tour… No, better yet, let’s do a virtual CLIMB of the Matterhorn in Switzerland!

What is the Matterhorn and where is it located?

The Matterhorn is a mountain in the Alps, located on the border of Switzerland and Italy. It has a unique and striking pyramid-like peak that is nearly symmetric.

Virtual Tour Matterhorn Peak rises with fog

This stunning peak rises from the Earth and stands at 14,642 feet above Zermatt, Switzerland, as if it were reaching for the sky itself. The surrounding area has many lakes and beautiful alpine meadows laced with abundant wildflowers.

It truly is one of Europe’s most well-known and striking landmarks. It is revered by tourists, outdoor enthusiasts and mountain climbers alike.

Enough ado about… well, everything! Let’s get started!

A Bird’s Eye Perspective

So… since I am an avid aviation enthusiast, I decided before we climb this mountain, why not see it from a different perspective… the air?!

Let’s go on a helicopter tour and see the peak from above! Follow me!

Let’s get on board the Eurocopter and take a look at this stunning landscape close-up.

Wow, that was so exciting! And, for me, probably a real highlight of my entire trip here! I personally love everything above and below this middle earth.

Okay… so now that we have that under our belt, let’s get to the serious stuff!

Let’s Climb the Matterhorn!

Let’s climb first and then the highlight will be when we actually are able to navigate the ridge at the top. If you have any GoPro’s or other camera gear, get it ready and hit record now, because the adventure is about to begin!

How about another walk along that epic ridge? Here’s the payoff… that traverse from Lion to Hornli Ridge…

Wow! We did it! And what incredible pictures and video! Have you ever seen anything as epic as this? These will be memories that will last a lifetime, for sure!

Thank you for joining me on another epic adventure. ..

Thanks for coming along with me for the adventure. Please tune in for more virtual tours coming soon. Hopefully, together we can make sure 2020 a real adventure, doing it safely and as creative as we can, despite what other plans this year might have!

The interactive exhibition "Zooom the Matterhorn" brings visitors closer to the Matterhorn. The name says it all - the alpine landscape and the mountain of mountains can be discovered in three zoom stages. The exhibition is a fascinating addition to a visit on the Gornergrat and offers completely new perspectives on the impressive mountain world and makes it possible to experience the mountain up close.

Get right up close

In the first zooom stage, the view is finally directed towards the real Matterhorn and the surrounding alpine mountain world in all its dimensions and beauty. Periscopes allow you to zoom in and take a very close look. Graphic anchor points in the visitor's field of vision provide additional information.

The second stage transports visitors in an immersive 3D cinema to the most diverse scenarios showing the four seasons on the Matterhorn - from icy and snowy landscapes and tempestuous autumn storms to gentle flowering spring meadows and balmy summer evenings. Thanks to light projections and a detailed replica of the Matterhorn, visitors encounter the virtual environment as an almost real experience.

In the third zoom stage, you can choose between two virtual paragliding flights, the relaxed panoramic flight and the exciting, sporty flight. The virtual sightseeing flight with 3D glasses in floating armchairs focuses on the Matterhorn and its awesome alpine landscape.

The multimedia presentation is rounded off by a wealth of tangible information on historically significant events, on high alpine nature with its unique flora, fauna and glaciers, and on the history of the Gornergrat Bahn itself.

Further information:

  • Suitable for families
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Information in German, English and French

How to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt in a day

' src=

You may have heard that Switzerland is all about mountains, mountains, and mountains.

So, if we can get to the summit of mountains in the Bernese Oberland - Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau - there is surely a way to visit the Matterhorn by train!

Well, jein! (That's both yes and no in Swiss German.)

Of course, Swiss trains will never let you far from any of the nation's classic mountains, but the Matterhorn is easier seen than climbed. Ascending to the very top of the mountain is not for the faint of heart, and quite a few have lost their lives in doing so.

However, it is still easy and very safe to enjoy one of Switzerland's most recognizable mountains by rail. I am almost ashamed to say that, as a naturalized Swiss citizen, this was my very first visit to the mountain known as Le Cervin in French, and Il Cervino in Italian! My wife, Tracy, joined me for this journey which coincided with very pleasant skies.

From Zürich to Visp in slightly more than two hours

Platform 31 is the newest bit of Zürich’s main station. There, we embark on an InterCity train bound for Switzerland’s federal city of Bern. (Officially, there is no de jure capital in Switzerland - did you know?)

SBB Panorama Train

And here's one for the train people among you: You know your train is a true sprinter if it escapes Olten without stopping! The Olten station, of course, is the Clapham Junction of German-speaking Switzerland - if not of the whole country!

Olten Train Station

The view begins to get truly awesome after we leave the next stop, Thun. There is the magnificent Lake Thun, and soon after Spiez, we are heading south into the Lötschberg Base Tunnel. Thanks to this straight connection to Switzerland's south, we soon arrive at our first interchange: Visp.

Making our way from Visp to Zermatt

On this sunny late summer day, connecting onto our second train to Zermatt feels a little like going back to a railway station in China. The masses are flooding the station underpasses, proving that we must be headed to a highly popular mountain!

We have booked first-class tickets for this rail journey. The modern panoramic coaches have much larger windows than the old-school ones, but they can no longer be lowered:

Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn - Panorama Windows

By now, you may have guessed it: I am into train stations a lot. (Sheldon Cooper, by contrast, is more into locomotives...) The train to Zermatt is much slower than the previous InterCity train. Part of it is because it activates its cogwheels every once in a while. Just minutes into this leg, we can spot the epic Matterhorn. Everyone is getting their cameras out...

Some stations we pass are request stops only, with the major stations being Täsch and Zermatt. (To train people, Täsch is possibly insignificant. But to car people, it is super important: with Zermatt being car-free, all motorists must park their cars in Täsch and proceed to Zermatt by train.)

Just over an hour later, we hit the terminus of this leg: Zermatt.

The station is popular with locals and guests from abroad, as you can tell from the international signage. Who knows, maybe a few years down the road, visitors from China will see the station add Chinese translations?

Zermatt Train Station

A quick lunch later, it is time to cross the street to the final leg: Zermatt to Gornergrat.

The train journey to Gornergrat is easily one of the most scenic ever! Add in stellar weather conditions and it becomes majestic:

The Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland

The journey reminded me of my geography courses in Switzerland, for we soon pass the tree line. Our coach is full of other photo bugs who are shuttering away at the many lakes along the tracks, including one at the Rotenboden station. Half an hour in, we reach the terminus of Gornergrat at 3089 meters above the sea. And then, the moment we have been waiting for: the iconic Matterhorn.

To make matters perfect, Tracy is treating herself to her favorite Swiss beverage: Rivella. It will be her "highest altitude" beverage consumed in Switzerland so far - to the view of one of the most famous peaks nonetheless. (There are some things you simply can't make up.)

We are ready for some hiking so we head down to Rotenboden:

Hike in Zermatt, Switzerland

And finally, a quick refresher for hikers: watch your trails!

In case you have never seen all types of Swiss hiking trails, they come in three colors:

  • plain yellow for generally accessible hiking trails anyone can use;
  • white-red-white for tougher ones (such as the bit from Gornergrat to Rotenboden);
  • white-blue-white for true mountaineers (professional equipment is required.)

Hike in Zermatt, Switzerland

After many years of hiking Switerland's trails, my legs have grown to the sturdy kind they are now. But for the uninitiated, here is some advice:

  • On white-red-white trails, where you see the trail markings (marked on stones), make a point of following them. Also, if you know in advance that you will be using them, make sure your shoes are ready for the challenge. Those intended for city streets might not be the best idea.
  • Make a point of taking breaks when you need them. Stay alert, hydrated, and in a state ready to climb. If you cannot continue anymore, stop and return if needed. But beware: the way back downhill can be equally challenging! If you find fellow hikers pick a route, stick to the same way. Especially if this is your first "red/white trail"...
  • A little Grüezi to other hikers, especially in German-speaking Switzerland, can hardly ever go wrong. These greetings can make you feel a lot more “Swiss"!
  • I know, we are all used to getting hooked on our mobile phones. Resist the urge because safety comes first on these tricky trails.

Don't miss that last train!

Our rented flat is in Zürich, so we have to be out of Zermatt by about 7:15 PM. This is also when it starts getting dark. By all means, enjoy Zermatt and the Matterhorn. But unless you are planning on spending the night in this alpine resort or have a car parked in Täsch, make a note of the last train out...

So, there you have it: a beautiful day trip from Zürich to Zermatt with all the toppings!

The Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland

David might appear to be a Beijinger, but his mind works in Züridüütsch and 5+ other languages. He is bursting with Swissness and cannot imagine a life without trains.

[Video] A Virtual Tour of Zermatt

Zermatt is one of the most stunning ski resorts and to demonstrate it we’ve put together this virtual tour round the resort via youtube..

Our tour shows Zermatt offers some of the best skiing in the world and why it is renowned for its luxurious accommodation and restaurants .

The history of the resort is synonymous with the development of skiing, as well as a home to mountain pioneers, making Zermatt a destination for every alpine enthusiast.

Zermatt: The Destination

Let’s start with this great video from the Zermatt Tourist Office that shows you all you need to know about a ski holiday in this great resort.

Next, take a look at this mini travel guide from American vlogger Conner Sullivan, who is super excited about being in Zermatt (or Zermaaatt as he pronounces it).

His approach might not be your style, but hang in there – his charming approach does give a genuine insight into the resort and town. As Conner says, sometimes ‘the things you see in movies are actually real!’

Zermatt is also one of the most scenic places in the world to wake up. Take a look at this timelapse video of sunrise on the Matterhorn and marvel, simply marvel at this natural wonder.

Skiing in Zermatt

Zermatt offers 360km of pistes served by 52 lifts and there is plenty of accessible off-piste. This video gives a insight into some of the piste skiing available, including some superb drone shots from air and a trip on the Gornergrat railway:

The 6 Best Ways to See the Matterhorn in Zermatt – A Complete Guide

By: Author Sophie Pearce

Posted on Last updated: August 17, 2023

Categories SWITZERLAND

This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for details.

If you’re looking for the best ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt, keep reading.

There are countless reasons to visit Zermatt all year round.

In Winter, it turns into a wonderland of snow-capped chateaus, a magnificent ski resort to try out the slopes, and the buzz of Apres-ski.

In Summer, you can surround yourself with snow-capped mountains, green hills pocketed with flowers, and countless walks which look like something straight out of a scene in The Sound of Music.

The best reason, in my humble opinion, is to meet the magnificent Matterhorn! This iconic mountain is better known as the Toblerone mountain which is featured on their triangular packaging.

It is a sight to behold when you’re in southern Valais. Its jagged peak is rather dramatic in all seasons if you can catch a glimpse of it.

You have to be quick though, the clouds come in rather quickly! Here are the best ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt.

Best ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt

A quick overview of Zermatt in Switzerland

The picturesque Swiss town of Zermatt is a car-free resort.

So, if you are approaching by car from Bern or Zurich, you will need to park up and catch the Zermatt shuttle through to the town.

The main location to do this is Täsch.

Don’t worry about finding a parking space, the car park is massive!

From here, you can catch the shuttle which runs around every 30 minutes back and forth.

Parking is quite reasonably priced for the day and if you’re staying for longer there are parking packages to invest in.

When you’re on the shuttle, you will get some great views of the valley and mountains if you sit on the left.

When you arrive in Zermatt, the station is ideally placed next to the Gornergratt Bahn, which will transport you to meet the Matterhorn!

Although it is a car-free resort, there are numerous Bolero’s to take you through the town or taxi you back to your chalet after a night on the town.

When is the best time to visit the Matterhorn in Zermatt?

If you’re flexible with your itinerary, you should try and go up on a crystal clear blue sky day!

This will mean that you get a full view of the mountain. But even with the best intentions, you will get wisps of clouds.

The clouds come in quickly in the afternoon and so try to go up as early in the morning so you can get the best views!

5 ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt!

Option 1: take the gornergrat bahn.

The most popular way to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt is to take the train up to the Gornergrat Bhan.

Trains run every 30 minutes and a spectacularly busy, to get some great views make sure you sit on the right-hand side of the train.

The main station is located around 1,604 metres above sea level and as you ascend, you have some amazing views of the mountain range!

Gornergrat Bhan train

2. Take in the view from Gornergrat Bahn

When you arrive at the station, this is where you can get the best views of the Matterhorn. You’ll definitely feel the altitude in your legs!

But, it’s all worth it for the stunning views of the mountains, glaciers, and the magnificent Matterhorn.

You can get your official pictures taken with it by dressing as a historic mountain climber.

Years ago, when I first visited here, there were Great Bernards with whiskey barrels also but no more – they’re now edited in!

There are plenty of platforms to take your own pictures though and the background really is incredible. People will think you’ve been photoshopped in!

Gornergrat Bahn Glacier

3. Drink a beer while overlooking the Matterhorn

There is plenty to do when you arrive at the Gornergrat Bahn summit, the obvious one being to take in the amazing panoramic views.

If you would prefer to sit and relax in the setting, there is also a cafe selling the most amazing apple strudel I ate while I was in Switzerland and the portions don’t come up small!

You can also sample their own bier speciale, Calanda.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

4. On the hike from Gornergrat to Zermatt

There are three options for you to get back down to Zermatt;

  • Get the train all the way back down
  • Use your ticket to stop at the platforms along the way
  • Get walking!

The great thing about buying a ticket on the Gornergrat Bahn is that you can stop off at all stations along the way.

So if you just wanted to stop off and get a different view of the mountains, that’s okay.

Also, you could just walk a little of the way or between stations – so it’s completely flexible.

One of the highlights of walking is you get to see their amazing lakes which should, on a clear, sunny and completely non-windy day give you a clear reflection of the peak of the Matterhorn.

But, as I said earlier, the clouds come in quickly! Despite this, the walk down is stunning and there are some cute cafes, bars, and hotels to visit on your way down.

The best way to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt!

5. In the Backdrop of Zermatt

After you have been up the Gornergrat and come back down, you’re probably exhausted if you did some hiking on the Bergweg.

Zermatt is the perfect place to come back to as it’s packed with restaurants and cafe’s in the compact city.

Plus, you can see the Matterhorn in the backdrop if it’s a clear day.

However, if nothing can stop you from spending your Swiss Francs there are plenty of shops to bag your souvenirs!

You can buy anything from designer watches, yummy swiss chocolate, and the ultimate super tourist cowbells!

Watch out for the Horse and Carriages, busy transporting lucky guests to the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof!

Zermatt Matterhorn Viewpoint

Lastly, there is a way to get a beautiful view of the village of Zermatt with the Matterhorn in the backdrop.

It’s a viewpoint at the top of Mürini Hill that takes about 15 minutes from the central station.

There is a lot of steps required to visit but it’s so worth it for these spectacular views. Especially at sunset.

You've missed the **ultimate** way to view the Matterhorn in Zermatt... From a Tandem Paragliding flight.

It's really the only activity here that is available to *almost* everyone (you need to be able to follow instructions on the take off and have enough fitness to run some steps). Skiing, Mountain Climbing, Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, Snowboarding, etc. all require a decent amount of fitness and "go for it" attitude. Being a passenger on a Swiss Tandem Paraglider is available to a much wider group of people.

Disclaimer: I'm a professional tandem pilot here in Zermatt (have lived here most of my life) and have flown passengers from the ages of 3 to 94.

After 10 years as a partner with FlyZermatt (the largest operator here), I've started my own company. Have a look and say hi: https://swissparaglide.com

Things to know

The mythical Matterhorn is the most recognizable mountain in the world—and there’s no better way to fully appreciate it than by doing a 360-loop around it. Apart from its visual splendor witnessed from all sides, this 8-day hiking tour comes with a plethora of Alpine natural gems intertwined with the local culture. But you’ll have to work for it, getting big miles and elevation gains under your belt. The reward? Every single thing that reminds you of the Alps—glassy lakes, cows lounging around, snow-capped peaks, and wildflower-carpeted valleys. All of that combined with an eclectic mix of refuges, enchanting Swiss villages, and a vibrant community. Order yourself a Raclette and sip on a cooling cocktail with the view of the world’s most iconic peak.

An 8-day hiking tour of the Matterhorn is a full circuit around this iconic Alpine peak. Formed by several land masses slamming into one another, Matterhorn is arguably the most recognizable peak in the world—and you’re about to take in its beauty from all its sides. Use those Swiss summer days for explorations of crystalline lakes, verdant pastures, and rocky ridges, with plenty of photo and snack breaks. As the day draws to a close, get some rest in traditional refuges and quality hotels—but not before tasting authentic dishes and delicious wines. Bon voyage!

Since there will be plenty of walking on Day 1 of the tour, it is recommended that you arrive at St. Niklaus or somewhere near to it a day prior to the start day. Make sure to arrange your flight tickets and accommodation for that one night accordingly.

Kick off your tour of the Matterhorn with a traditional cable car that will take you to Jungu. That’s your starting point, from which you’ll begin hiking, enjoying the views of Monte Rosa in the background to the foot of the first pass—the Augstbordpass at 2,900 m (9,515 ft). Descend through Alpine meadows and larch forests until you reach the typical Alpine village of Gruben, where you will spend the night. Meals : Lunch and dinner Hiking : 6.5 hours Accommodation : Mountain refuge Elevation : +1,000 m / +3,280 ft | -1,100 m / -3,610 ft

Depending on how the group feels and weather conditions, there are several possibilities today. You will either climb up to the Col de Forclettaz at 2,874 m (9,430 ft) via the Chalte Berg or to the Meidpass at 2,790 m (9,155 ft). The Nava and Barneuza meadows welcome you to Val d’Annivier. Take a 30-minute drive to your accommodation for the night. Meals : Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking : 6.5 hours Accommodation : Mountain refuge Elevation : +1,150 m / +3,770 ft | -1,400 m / -4,595 ft

Val d'Anniviers valley

There’s a possibility of taking a short transfer to the Moiry Dam—or you can walk. Today you’ll be walking along the top of the scenic Moiry Dam, before climbing further up above it. Once you reach the Col du Tsaté, you’ll be rewarded with scenic views of the Arolla Valley. Reach the valley with a short transfer and settle in for the night. Meals : Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking : 6.5 hours Accommodation : Hotel Elevation : +500 m / +1,640 ft | -1,200 m / -3,940 ft

Moiry Dam in the Swiss Alps

Day 4 of the Matterhorn tour starts with an easy section on the high Arolla Glacier and a climb up to the Col Collon at over 3,000 m (9,845 ft). Soon you’ll reach the Prarayer refuge, nestled on the edge of the lake, which will be awaiting you at the end of a long and scenic descent. Meals : Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking : 6.5 hours Accommodation : Mountain refuge (without luggage transfer) Elevation : +1,200 m / +3,940 ft | -1,200 m / -3,940 ft

Arolla valley

Start the day with a long ascent to the Col de Valcournera at over 3,000 m (9,845 ft). A few cabled, though not too difficult sections, lead you up to the final major ascent. From the col, the cabled path provides an easy route to the Perucca Vuillermoz refuge perched on the rocky glacial landscape. One final hiking push is required to reach your accommodation for the night at the bottom of Valtournenche. Meals : Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking : 6.5 hours Accommodation : Hotel Elevation : +1,350 m / +4,430 ft | -1,400 m / -4,595 ft

Valtournenche Valley

A short transfer takes you to the ski resort of Breuil Cervinia. You will hike up to the Theodul Pass at an altitude of 3,349 m (10,990 ft), where you will rope up and cross the glacier to Trockener Stegg. Descend down to Zermatt through quintessential Alpine pastures and typical, charming villages, whose buildings cling onto the slopes. Spend the night at an inn. Meals : Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking : 6 hours Accommodation : Inn Elevation : +800 m / +2,625 ft | -1,360 m / -4,460 ft

Zermatt and Matterhorn Peak

Today’s starting point is Randa, which you’ll reach by a short transfer, and start an ascent along a path on the left bank of the Matter Valley to the Topali Hut. This off-the-beaten-track path offers spectacular views of the Täschhorn. Meals : Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Hiking : 7.5 hours Accommodation : Mountain refuge Elevation : +1,520 m / +4,990 ft | -260 m / -855 ft

Zermatt village in the morning

Depending on the group’s readiness and weather conditions, you’ve got two options for your final day: you can either walk along an Alpine path to the Wasulicke Pass at 3,114 m (10,125) before taking a cable car down to St. Niklaus, or you can walk straight down to St. Niklaus via varied paths. You’ll reach the town at around 4 pm, marking the official end of your adventure. If you’d like to stick around for a bit longer, just ask your guide for some recommendations! Once you and your guide agree on the details of your itinerary, your guide will suggest the best place to meet. Since you’ll be walking for more than 6 hours on Day 1 of the tour, you should be in St. Niklaus a day prior to the official start of the tour.
