Visiting bazaars in the Middle East is a unique experience like no other. In Arabic, markets are called "souqs" and most of the one’s on this list are at least 200 years old. Souqs are usually very old neighborhoods bedecked with stalls where you can find gold, spices, meat, clothing, art and more gold. 

Grand Bazaar, Istanbul - This is one of the largest and oldest markets in the world with over 4,000 stalls. It is on almost every Middle East tour itinerary, for a good reason.

Misir Carsisi  (Spice Bazaar), Istanbul   - If you’re looking for a food and spice mecca, the Spice Bazaar wins. It is filled with color, history, fragrances and more. 

Al - Hamidiyah Souq, Syria - This is the largest souq in Syria and sits next to the old walls of Damascus while the Roman Temple of Jupiter stands eloquently in the entrance. The architecture, diversity and goods make it extremely popular for both locals and tourists. 

Al - Madina Souq, Syria - This market in the heart of Aleppo is the largest covered market in the world. This souq got hit pretty bad during the war, however, what is left is still worth immersing yourself in. Filled with history, culture, crafts and luxury goods, this is an experience worth seeking.

Khan  el - khalili, Egypt - One of Cairo’s main attractions, this souq is extremely beautiful, colorful, and riddled with ornaments, good, spices and the hustle and bustle of trade. As one of the most vibrant bazaars, take a stroll around this outdoors market and find some gems to take back home. 

Medina of Fez, Morocco  - Ancient, intricate and cultural, this souq is a labyrinth of food, pottery, copper, gold, jewelry and endless alleys and fragrances at every turn. Yes, it might be a little overwhelming but a load of fun, so be prepared! 

Tabriz Bazaar, Iran - Located historically on the Silk Road, this souq is a part of the UNESCO inventory. It is one of the oldest bazaars in the Middle East and is notable for their trade of rugs and tea. 

Gold Souq, Dubai - A trip to the Gold Souq is just pure fascination. There is glittering bars of gold and jewelry for miles to see on every single alley. 

Jaffa Flea Market, Israel - Persian goods, rugs, rings and more jewelry are to be found in the stalls that line the stone pathways. At night, the market transforms into a vibrant hotspot with music, drinks and restaurants.

Fesenjoon : Easily one of the most tasty persian dishes, this stew is pact full of flavors such as pomegranate sauce, walnuts and poultry served with rice. 

Baklava : This dessert is delicious, filling and an easy crowd pleaser anywhere in the world. It’s rich and sweet, made up of dough baked with honey, nuts, lemon zest, syrup, cinnamon and more. 

Kibbeh : This Lebanese dish are crispy balls mixed with cracked wheat, ground beef or lamb, onions, olive oil, nutmeg, cinnamon and more. 

Masgouf : Originating from Iraq, this is made of butterflied carp and cooked traditionally by grilling it sideways and topped with lemon, pomegranate and sumac spices.

We advise booking ahead of time to create a hassle free experience and sometimes, during the winter, prices tend to drop.

Know what city you are going to. How much you spend is definitely dependent on where you are going. For example, you can expect food and hotels to be much cheaper in Turkey, Iran or Jordan as opposed to Israel or the UAE. 

Try out street food . It's an excellent way to save money and an incredible opportunity to try out the most delicious and authentic dishes that locals enjoy. 

Don’t be afraid to bargain at Souqs. Save your souvenir purchases from the airport or traveler stalls and venture into the many mesmerizing bazaars that the Middle East has to offer. Usually already at a decent price, you can bargain goods such as spices or art for an even cheaper deal. These are also great places to pick up cheap meals and snacks. 

 Make sure when using licensed cabs that you agree on a fare beforehand. Uber is also used in the Middle East and very reliable.

If you are skeptical on going because of what’s going on with the world right now, don’t worry, I was one of them but this trip changed my whole perspective of it. The trip was an amazing experience. The hotel in Cairo downtown, very close to everywhere. The hotel's ambience with its lift remembering the times from before the World War II. The size of rooms and good breakfast. Nur was a great tour guide for our Giza Pyramids and The Egyptian Museum. The trip by train and its sleepingf carriage was quite an experience but as we were dead tired we fell asleep immediately and woke up close to Aswan, our destination. The railway remembered British times in Egypt with East German carriages completing the vision. The ship, however was one of the best in the Nile fleet. Good rooms, fine service and great food. Could we want anything more? Hassan was a first class leader with his arm up succeeded in not losing anyone in the crowd of visitors. The information he gave us was short and repeated many times so that we could remember the most important details. At the beginning we thought it was too short but we soon realised trhat too much information would make it evaporate from our mind very fast. The historic places on the way are amazing by themselves alone. You do not need any recommendatrion. Remember to take tour swimsuit when going to the Nubian village. There is a rare opportunity to swim in the Nile on the way. You cannot miss it. Any way our group was small with just ten people in with four couples and two singles . Americans, Irish people Canadians and Polish..Quite a nice mixture of nationalities. I think we had a really good time together. If I am to go anywhere I will choose Tour Radar and in Egypt I am sure to recommend Holidays in Egypt with Taher and other guys. Thank you for an unforgettable trip. See you again. Great service from landing pick up to drop off back at Cairo airport. Everything ran like clockwork and Michael was happy to slightly adjust one day's schedule to suit us. Michel and Monty our guides were fantastic, I didn't know that much out ancient Egypt before the trip but they taught us so much with real passion for their history that I now feel like an expert. I would recommend doing the balloon ride extra over the Valley of the Kings at dawn it gave such an appreciation of the amount of tombs and temples there.

What people love about Middle East Tours

My wife and I went on a 17-day tour of Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. The tour was well orchestrated. All the details of getting into and out of countries were handled professionally and with little cause of concern to us. Hand-offs between countries went well. We were guided by knowledgable people who had our best interests at heart (with possibly one exception).The only real complaint I have is that TourRadar turned out to be more of a facilitator than a tour agency with its own guides. I was confused when we got to Israel and found that neither TourRadar nor Click Tours (which answered my online questions) was the agency actually leading the tours. Not knowing that we would be connecting with Consolidated Tour Operators (CTO) led to some initial confusion in the Tel Aviv airport. Expecting to be linked up with Click Tours and knowing nothing about CTO, we missed connecting with the airport facilitator in Tel Aviv for nearly an hour while each of tried to find the other. If I had been told to look for a CTO representative, our stressful introduction to the tour would have gone much more smoothly. In Israel and Jordan, CTO handled our tour. In Egypt, the agency was Sylvia. I had expected to be part of a group that held together for the entire 17 days, but that wasn't the case. Groups formed and disbanded based on what individuals planned to visit. In Israel there were 11 of us, and we bonded quickly. In Jordan I was surprised that our group dwindled to five. And in Egypt there was only my wife and me. That left us vulnerable in Egypt to the care of our guide, who, because there was just the two of us, managed to fleece us of $150. I would never have signed up with TourRadar if I had understood that my wife and I would be left alone at one point without the safety of a group and unprepared to deal with a guide we didn't fully trust.

• When traveling in many Middle Eastern countries you should be conscious about their dress codes. When in Dubai as an example, you should dress conservatively especially in religious sites. That includes long-sleeves and pants, as well as lose-fitting clothing for women (nothing revealing).
• Additional do’s and don’ts include: You should haggle at the bazaars, you should never be overly drunk in public, and try to refrain from any public displays of affection.

As countries and people continue to emerge from the cloud of the pandemic, their increasing desire to reconnect with the world is expected to become the driving force of growth in travel throughout 2022.

Though the industry has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, its recovery so far has been significant. for example, jordan’s queen alia international airport welcomed 122% more passengers in 2021 than it did in 2020. and the hotel sector is also poised for growth, with marriott international expected to open around 25 new properties in the region this year., some new trends have also had an impact. working remotely has today become commonplace for many employees, with big tech companies like twitter, meta, and amazon leading the way. this means that hospitality venues are being used as make-shift offices for travelers, as well as residents seeking a change in their working environment. on the financial side, most travel companies are now favoring an asset-light approach. the separation between the management of operations and real-estate assets now allows hospitality companies to focus on their core business., this month we release our first ranking of the middle east’s top 50 travel & tourism leaders. the u.a.e. dominates, with 24 leaders featured based in the emirates, followed by 11 in saudi arabia, and four in egypt. the hotels and hospitality sector is the most dominant with 26 entries, followed by aviation with 17, and tourism with seven entries., methodology, for this ranking, we included leaders that span across the entire travel ecosystem, including aviation, hotels, and destinations. all individuals had to be based in the middle east. we ranked them based on: • size of the business, including revenue, values of investments, and asset value. • ownership of assets. • designation of the business leader. • experience of the business leader. • degree of influence of the business leader. • other achievements of the business leader.,   top 50 travel & tourism leaders  .

Our client journeys: Tourism case studies

Gcc island concept, cruise company business plan, green tourism destination, digital travel platform.

When a major investment fund decided to develop a destination island in the Middle East, Strategy& was asked to help design the concept.

Strategy& first assessed the host region and took a close look at other benchmark destinations. An analysis of source markets and visitor characteristics was also conducted to determine targeting and consumer preferences. From there, Strategy& developed the island’s concept including retail, beach, outdoor, and cultural activities. To finalize, the team tested the details with focus groups and developed financial forecasts. The concept and implementation roadmap were both approved by the investment fund’s board of directors and the island is currently in development.

Strategy& was retained by a major investment fund to assess the viability of the cruise sector and define its strategy.

The Strategy& team first confirmed the attractiveness of the region to the cruise ecosystem and estimated the cruise demand across different target markets. The team assessed potential destinations, estimated cruise traffic, and articulated an infrastructure and destinations upgrade plan. Strategy& defined the cruise line strategy and developed its business plan, which also covered details for vessel acquisition and deployment.

The board of directors approved the strategy and a cruise company was established to manage infrastructure and destinations upgrades, as well as launch the cruise line.

A tourist destination in the Middle East had the ambitious goal of transforming into a “Green Tourist Destination” and commissioned Strategy& to help develop the strategy.

Strategy& first analyzed the destination’s existing carbon emissions, water supply, solid and liquid waste, waste management practices, and biodiversity. The team then conducted a cost-benefit analysis and made recommendations for 14 holistic programs that could achieve a “realistic green” scenario, while also offering a framework for financing the green initiative.

The sustainability strategy developed by the team at Strategy& was presented and approved to move forward.

Strategy& was asked by a GCC government agency focused on aviation to support the activation of a one-stop digital platform for all travel services.

The Strategy& team first defined a clear objective for the digital platform—namely to offer tourists one central online location where they could connect with all travel suppliers including hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators. The team then designed the platform’s operating model, including the overall functional architecture and the required modules of the core technology.

Once the design was developed, Strategy& helped the agency select a vendor and trade partners, create marketing materials, and activate operations.

The United Arab Emirates is reflecting a stable economy growth of 2% year over year with a sustainable growth in both major two emirates Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

According to the Ministry of Economy the UAE is forecasting a 3.6% overall increase by the end of 2018 impacted by healthy changes in the oil prices and will be boosted further by the hosting of Dubai Expo 2020.

Vacations are well recognized within the UAE having – one key long vacation of 3 months (summer), two short vacation periods of 7 days (small feast- Eid) and 11 days (large feast- Eid).

Schools spring vacation is considered as an opportunity, it usually begins at the end of March or the beginning of April. Other short vacations which are connecting to National days, Islamic Days such as Islamic New Year, Prophet s Mohammed birthday etc.

The distribution channel with the UAE and the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market remains well recognized in a clear leadership from the B2C channels that represent more 60% of the outbound travel flows headed by Booking.com and followed by Expedia , Trivago , Hotel Combined and Wego platforms.

The B2B (classic travel agents) followed with more than 20% of the total outbound travel flows.

Direct Bookings could be an opportunity with less than 20% of the total outbound travel flow of the Emirates.

Educational expertise remain an asset in attracting travellers from the UAE and several GCC countries.
