The University was established on 7 February 1864. The West Virginia University’s sports teams are called the Mountaineers, and they compete in the NCAA’s Division I.

WVU celebrates Mountaineer Week, and it is the celebration of WVU tradition and Appalachian heritage that started in 1947. Other events and competitions among West Virginia University students have been included and designed to honour the school and state pride.

Morgantown is one of the most well-known cities in the Mountain State. Here, you will find the 30,000-plus-student campus of West Virginia University, a stellar and well-respected medical school, and the beloved West Virginia Mountaineer football and basketball teams, led by everybody’s favorite coach, Bob Huggins. What you will also find is a fantastic vacation or weekend getaway with plenty to keep you busy and have fun. Here is how to spend a fantastic long weekend in the charming town of Morgantown, West Virginia.

First things first, Morgantown is located in Monongalia County and deep in the heart of Mountaineer Country, which proudly bleeds blue and gold. It is accessible by I-79 and I-68 and has the Morgantown Municipal Airport (MGW). It is 56 miles from Pittsburgh and 156 miles from Charleston, West Virginia.

Things To Do In Morgantown

I’ll admit even I was surprised at the sheer number of things to do in Morgantown on my recent visit. The city I’d been to for football games well over twenty years ago has grown tremendously since those old days and now is a destination in its own right. Here were some of my favorites.

West Virginia Botanic Garden At Tibbs Run Preserve

On my visit, spring was still in hiding a bit, so I didn’t get the full bloom effect of the West Virginia Botanic Garden , but I appreciated the peaceful property that is great for short and easy hikes. The botanical garden houses many flower species, has a lovely shade garden, hammocks between the trees, and wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and animals. 

Drink Local Beer

Morgantown has many breweries, so having a good beer is indeed a possibility. Mountain State Brewing Company , Iron Horse Tavern , Morgantown Brewing Company , and Apothecary Ale House & Café are four that are relaxing, have great beer selections, and are popular with the locals. 

Coopers Rock State Forest

You’re in for a real treat when you set foot on the Coopers Rock State Forest property in nearby Bruceton Mills. The sandstone cliff setting is serene and overgrown with rhododendrons and a variety of trees. It has perfect hiking paths and jaw-dropping overlooks of the Cheat River, a steep 1,200 feet below. Don’t worry about resting; there are quite a few benches on the way to the Cheat River Gorge overlook. 

Pro Tip: If you are into whitewater rafting, the Cheat River, with Class IV+ rapids, is a great place to do it. Trout fishing is also a popular activity.

Have Fun At Cheat Lake

I think Cheat Lake is West Virginia’s most beautiful. I would recommend going there for a boat ride, standup paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, or even just taking a picnic lunch and enjoying the scenery. If you are interested in fishing, try your luck at catching walleye, bass, and catfish in these backwaters. A whopping 1,730 acres make up the man-made reservoir found in the northern part of gorgeous Monongalia County, West Virginia.

Fun Fact: You can rent pontoon boats at Cheat Lake . 

Rent a bike from Wamsley Cycles or use your own to enjoy the sights along the Rail Trail. Wamsley has a wide variety of cycles, including E-bikes. The Caperton Rail Trail is my favorite part and an easy ride for beginner bikers. Six miles of paved urban areas, running alongside the water and restored railway station, afford a scenic ride and a few places to stop for drinks, food, shopping, or photo ops. 

Visit Forks Of Cheat Winery

One of West Virginia’s best-known wineries is in Morgantown. Forks of Cheat Winery produces prize-winning wines in the Appalachian Mountains, which can be sampled in a tasting room setting. Bad Cat Catawba, a semi-sweet rose, is one of the most popular varietals and the one my friends rave about. 

Tour The Campus

Take a walking tour of the West Virginia University campus, paying attention to historic and architecturally beautiful buildings. WVU was founded in 1867. There are three main areas to explore: Evansdale, Downtown, and Health Sciences. The most popular things to see are the WVU Coliseum, Woodburn Hall, Mountainlair Student Union, and Milan Puskar Stadium.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Don Knotts was from Morgantown? You’ll find a statue dedicated to him downtown in front of the Metropolitan Theatre on High Street. 

Sip Craft Cocktails

Anvil + Ax is a plush, stately space inside Hotel Morgan, offering velvet bar stools, a sparkling chandelier, and an impressive craft cocktail list. From Pisco Sours to Four Roses Old Fashioned, the allure of the drink menu intrigued me from the get-go. I ended up trying a Lavender Rhodo, made with Chopin vodka, lavender syrup, Giffard Vanille de Madagascar, limoncello, and lavender essential oil spritz. I had no problem paying $12 for a cocktail with this much creativity and pizazz, plus it tasted delicious. 

Marvel At The Art Museum Of WVU

Ooh and aah over the 4,000 works of art, such as sculptures, paintings, and ceramics, and exhibits inside the Art Museum of WVU . Currently, museum hours are Friday through Sunday, 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Nath Sculpture Garden is part of the museum, with 2.5 acres showcasing a few striking pieces positioned amidst native flora. 

Best Restaurants In Morgantown 

Morgantown continues to grow by leaps and bounds and has a long list of great places to eat. Long gone are the mostly chain restaurants and fast food establishments, though there are still plenty. Now, you can find local eateries that have upscale pub grub, gourmet dishes, and several vegetarian offerings, too. Here are the ones I ate my way through on my Morgantown visit.

You will find al fresco dining and an indoor coffee shop setting at the Terra Cafe . Serving fresh, local food and scratch-made pastries and baked goods, you’ll love the tasty offerings at this upscale eatery. Besides salads, sandwiches, breakfast dishes, and soup, Terra Cafe has an astounding selection of gourmet desserts ranging from key lime pie, cookies, and cannoli to exotic cheesecakes, mousse cake, and cupcakes. Plus, they have a great coffee and tea menu. 

Oliverio’s Ristorante

Oliverio’s has been a trusted and loved name in West Virginia’s Italian food scene since 1965. They serve lunch, dinner, and family meals and offer two locations in Morgantown, including one in the vibrant Wharf District. Oliverio’s meatballs with ricotta are my top pick for appetizers, and the Italian wedding soup is great if you are looking at a soup option. You can’t go wrong with any of the pasta dishes or pizzas, but I would pick the mushroom sacchetti or lasagna if you need suggestions. I’m drooling just thinking of the garlicky breadsticks with seasoned oil. 

The Lakehouse

Sit by the beautiful waterfront of The Lakehouse on Cheat Lake for a classic meal — salads, sandwiches, burgers, and more. Stuffed hot peppers are prevalent in this region (served with garlic toast), so you may want to whet your appetite with them. I ordered their signature sandwich, the Hot Italian Sub, with salami, pepperoni, ham, onion, lettuce, tomato, three kinds of cheese (yes, three), and Italian dressing for lunch. OMG, this was one flavorful and filling sandwich. The billowy bread was the perfect placeholder for all this goodness.

Pies & Pints

Pies & Pints is a West Virginia institution, originated in the town of Fayetteville. Pies & Pints is a comfortable pizza joint with unique pie creations, tasty appetizers, and a revered happy hour, 3 to 6, Monday through Friday. Pork and Pepper Nachos will always be my go-to appetizer order, but Pies & Pints’ specialty pies are excellent for your main course. Check out the Grape and Gorgonzola pizza … yum! You can even choose two different pizza combinations to be split across one order; super convenient for those with different tastes sharing. 

Zeke’s Breakfast & Bakes

Visit Zeke’s Breakfast & Bakes for a really good coffee or tea. They also serve a small selection of breakfast sandwiches. The bagels and guava pastries are terrific, but I preferred the heartier breakfast taco with eggs, black beans, peppers and onions, cheese, corn, salsa, and the breakfast meat of your choice. 

Fun Fact: If you get your food to dine in, pay attention to the colorful dishes used by Zeke’s and many other restaurants. Fiestaware dinnerware is made at the Homer Laughlin china factory in Newell, West Virginia. 

Best Hotels In Morgantown

I was a guest of the newly opened Hotel Morgan , a renovated historic Wyndham property and a spectacular place to stay. The hotel hit all the marks and exceeded them for taking the customer experience a level higher than most. Hotel Morgan has comfortable furnishings that are both gorgeous and functional. I loved the ambiance of the lobby area, heavy woodwork, modern and elegant onsite cocktail bar (Anvil + Ax), and the unique room accents. 

Other lodging choices include the Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place , highly popular for college visits and game days, the Hampton Inn and Suites , and La Quinta Morgantown . If you are interested in camping, there are quite a few options in the surrounding area, including Cheat Lake. 

Pro Tips: Morgantown is a great mountain getaway, but I would steer clear of fall weekends with home games when the tailgating crowds will put a damper on parking, reservations, and getting around. And whenever you are in the Mountain State, consider:

The largest city in the north-central part of West Virginia , Morgantown lies along the Monongahela River amidst the Appalachian foothills. Mostly known for being home to West Virginia University and its sizable student population, it has lots of picture-perfect green spaces and fun outdoor activities for you to enjoy.

While coal mining and steel forging were key to its early history, it is now the lively college campus that dominates life in town. Alongside several superb museums and an attractive arboretum, WVU has a proud sporting heritage for you to delve into. Watching one of the Mountaineers teams play is therefore a must due to their passionate fans and the unforgettable atmosphere they create.

Other than all the exciting things to do in Morgantown that take place on campus, the city’s main appeal is the resplendent nature that lies all around it. With countless trails and riverside walks to enjoy and pristine lakes and forests lying nearby, Morgantown is a treat to explore.

12. Caperton Trail

A delight to walk, run, or cycle along, the Caperton Trail winds its way through both the city centre and some of the surrounding countryside. Very popular with locals and tourists alike, the waterfront path passes through several downtown parks and connects numerous communities and nature spots.

Built atop a retired railroad track, the picturesque trail runs parallel to the Monongahela River with calm, quiet stretches lying next to industrial areas and the vibrant West Virginia University campus. Some lovely riverside restaurants and cafes are dotted along the route which also takes you through Hazel Ruby McQuain Park; an important hub of activity in the heart of downtown.

Along with the connecting Mon River and Deckers Creek trails, the multipurpose path has roughly fifty miles of gorgeous outdoor areas for you to explore.

11. Morgantown History Museum

If you want to learn more about the city’s fascinating past, then the Morgantown History Museum is an absolute must. Packed with artifacts and exhibits, it lies at the southern end of downtown, not far from many of Morgantown’s other main tourist attractions.

Founded in 2011, its captivating collection now covers the history of the area from prehistoric times right up to the present day. While some exhibits focus on early pioneers and local Native American peoples, others look at the Civil War or comic actor Don Knotts who was born in Morgantown.

Due to its diverse range of displays and dioramas, the museum is very interesting to peruse with old mining tools and equipment on show alongside historic photos, textiles, and toys.

10. Don Knotts Statue

Just a couple of blocks north of the museum is a terrific statue of the legendary actor and comedian Don Knotts; the city’s most famous son. Set on the High Street in front of the Metropolitan Theater, it is now a very popular spot to snap a photo or take a selfie with the beaming bronze statue.

Unveiled in 2016, it depicts Don Knotts holding the service cap he wore in his most renowned role as Deputy Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. Born and raised in Morgantown, he practiced his ventriloquist and comedic acts at church and school before enlisting in the US army and eventually making his way to Hollywood.

As well as taking a photo with the larger-than-life character, you can also see a star on the sidewalk which features Knotts’ name and image. This is in homage to the one he received on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000.

9. Mountaineer Field

To get a real feel for life in the college town, make sure to watch the university football team play at Mountaineer Field. Each game day, the over 60,000 fervent fans who pack out the enormous arena on campus create an intoxicating atmosphere with huge tailgating parties taking place hours before.

While it is now named Milan Puskar Stadium, the hallowed sporting venue’s pristine green playing surface is still known as Mountaineer Field. All the seats and suites in its U-shaped bowl offer great views of the pitch and its giant video scoreboard, while plenty of concession stands are dotted about.

When the Mountaineers win, the raucous crowd serenades the team with a rousing rendition of John Denver’s hit song Take Me Home, Country Roads. If you’re after even more music, the stadium puts on numerous concerts during the sunny summer months.

8. Cheat Lake Trail

Another fantastic place to head where you can immerse yourself in nature and enjoy some stunning views is along the Cheat Lake Trail . Lying just twenty minutes’ drive northeast of town, it takes you along the lake’s scenic shores with delightful fauna, flora, and viewpoints featuring throughout.

Stretching 4.5 miles in length, the mostly flat, paved path hugs the sparkling shoreline and is backed by both dense woodlands and large green open spaces. Developed in 2000, it follows what was once a former railroad corridor that trundled its way along the weaving reservoir’s eastern banks.

Nowadays, outdoor lovers come to walk, jog, and cycle along the trail while taking in its fine nature and divine views. Cheat Lake Park towards its northern end also has a playground, picnic areas, and a fishing platform for people to make use of.

7. WVU Core Arboretum

A very peaceful and pretty place, the WVU Core Arboretum has loads of shady trails for visitors to wander along. A massive part of the university campus, it contains countless kinds of plants, flowers and shrubs with many of its towering trees being over 200 years old.

Created in 1948, it protects the vast swathes of old-growth forest that sprawl across the hilly bluffs between the Monongahela River and the boulevard of the same name. Within its verdant confines, you can spot over 600 species of plants and trees with its lush, leafy undergrowth acting as a safe haven for local birdlife.

Besides ambling about down by the river and enjoying the blooming wildflowers in spring, you can catch shows and concerts at its outdoor amphitheater in summer.

6. WVU Coliseum

Alongside the arboretum is yet another of the college campus’ main attractions: the WVU Coliseum. It is here in the colossal concrete arena that both the men’s and women’s basketball teams play their fast-paced and frenetic games.

First opened in 1970 on the Evansdale Campus, the circular sports stadium is instantly recognizable from its distinctive dome. It is its cavernous ceiling and the steep stands that plunge their way to the court below that create the arena’s loud and lively atmosphere and makes games so fun to attend.

Aside from the WVU Mountaineers basketball teams, the Coliseum also hosts wrestling, volleyball, and gymnastics competitions alongside the occasional concert and college graduation ceremony. Its hulking great structure also has squash courts, a dance studio, and lecture rooms for students to use.

5. Art Museum Of WVU

Just a short stroll away is the Art Museum Of WVU which boasts an exquisite collection of photos, paintings and sculptures. Its innumerable artworks transport you all the way from the United States and the Appalachians all the way to Africa and Asia.

Surrounded by immaculate grounds and gardens, its galleries and exhibition spaces occupy a large, modern building that opened back in 2015. Its 4,000 enthralling art pieces cover countless centuries, cultures, and art forms, with masterpieces by Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso also displayed.

In addition to all the phenomenal prints and photos in its light and airy galleries, the museum hosts loads of temporary exhibitions over the course of the year. After seeing these or maybe catching one of its concerts and art shows, make sure to explore the gorgeous Nath Sculpture Garden outside.

4. Dorsey’s Knob Park

Despite lying less than ten minutes’ drive south of the city center, Dorsey’s Knob Park feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. From atop of the prominent mount, you can bathe in simply sublime views of Morgantown, the Monongahela River, and distant Appalachian Mountains.

Towering 1,398 feet in total, Dorsey’s Knob dominates the surrounding countryside with the scenic Sky Rock protruding from its summit. Beside clambering up the side of the big boulder and gazing out over West Virginia’s rolling hills and farms, you can also hike about the park’s many trails.

A playground and picnic areas are scattered about its sloping hillside next to a challenging eighteen hole disc golf course known for its demanding downhill and uphill shots.

3. Farmers Market

A colorful and chaotic affair, the Morgantown Farmers Market has scores of laden stands and stalls for locals and tourists alike to peruse. Offering a fantastic selection of tasty farm-to-table products, its summer season takes place every Saturday morning from May through November.

Held at the covered metal market place in downtown, its forty or so local farmers and vendors have now provided the community with fresh produce and outstanding artisanal products since 2002. On sale is everything from meats and cheeses to fruits and vegetables, jams, and jellies.

As you shop for freshly baked bread and pastries, you can enjoy the fun and friendly atmosphere or listen to live music and watch culinary demonstrations. The market’s winter season runs to April and is instead every second Saturday morning.

2. West Virginia University

As much of life in town revolves around West Virginia University, it is almost impossible to not stop by its sprawling campus at some point. As well as being home to lots of attractive architecture and pretty green spaces, it has sights such as the arboretum, art museum, and Coliseum to check out.

Now covering a humongous area along the Monongahela River, the renowned research school is set just northwest of downtown. Founded in 1867, it encompasses over a dozen different colleges with both top-class sports facilities and excellent museums being dotted about the lovely leafy campus.

About This Park

Established in 1936, Coopers Rock State Forest boasts some of the most iconic views in Almost Heaven. Located just off I-68, about 13 miles from Morgantown, the park features canyon overlooks, historical sites, picnic shelters, 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, sandstone cliffs for climbing and bouldering, cross-country ski terrain, a lake perfect for reeling in trout and a nearby river for rafting. Notice: The bridge accessing the scenic overlook is open for 2023 season. Visitors to Coopers Rock State Forest during the 2023-2024 season can expect ongoing repairs and new construction on various projects including the bridge area; please be aware and cautious around work zones. Accommodations

Bring your bike for a great workout around 50 miles of trails. Trails vary by degree, so there’s no need to worry about skill or experience. Pick up a map from the park office before you head out for some fun!

Coopers Rock State Forest has a primitive campground with 25 sites and an RV campground with 25 sites. Each site can be reserved a year in advance. Both campgrounds close during the winter but open by the first weekend in April, depending on weather. Coopers Rock has 14 cache sites hidden for geocaching enthusiasts. Beat everyone to the treasure – all you need is a smartphone with GPS!

Enjoy hiking on nearly 50 miles of trails that wind through this vast forest! The Henry Clay Iron Furnace Trail, takes you on a trip back in time to find a huge stone structure used for producing iron in the 1800s, located in a grassy glade in an otherwise undisturbed forest. More amazing views and discoveries are found along various trails in the forest.

Hunters are welcome here! Properly licensed individuals are welcome to hunt in-season (in specified areas of Coopers Rock State Forest). No hunting zones surround all forest recreational facilities.

Museums & Historical Sites

The Morgantown Glass Museum boasts more than 5,000 rare and vintage pieces. Colorful and luminous, it’s a sight to behold!

There’s also the New Deal Homestead Museum in Arthurdale. Dating back to the Roosevelt administration, the 1930s site has 5 original homes you can visit.

Coopers Rock has several playgrounds for kids.

Area outfitters provide guided trips and shuttle services on the Cheat River , which at its peak runs up to Class IV+. Float trips can also be arranged on the flatwater sections of the river. The nearby Youghiogheny River offers some of America’s best whitewater, trips run from April to November.

Coopers Rock State Forest is named for Coopers Rock, a series of sandstone cliffs above the Cheat River Gorge. Legend has it that a fugitive hid near what is now the overlook. A cooper by trade, he continued to make and sell barrels from his mountain hideout. During the 1800s the iron industry flourished in the area that is now Coopers Rock. Today the remains of the Henry Clay Furnace – the first steam-powered blast furnace in western Virginia – is a popular hiking and biking destination in the forest. The forest proper was established in 1936. Many of its structures, including the main overlook, picnic shelters and superintendent’s house, were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Eleven of these structures have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Coopers Rock has two campgrounds and 50 total campsites. Each site can be reserved a year in advance. Both campgrounds close during the winter but open by the first weekend in April, depending on weather. To confirm opening dates, call the forest office at 304-594-1561.

McCollum Campground This RV campground has electrical hookups at each site, a central bathhouse with showers, water available at multiple outside faucets and a centralized dump station. WiFi is available at the McCollum Campground for registered campsites and pets are permitted if they remain on a leash.   Note: McCollum Campground closes for the season at the end of November. 

Rhododendron Campground Trailers are not permitted in this primitive campground. There is no electricity available and potable water is available at the restrooms. There are no showers at Rhododendron Campground, but registered guests may use the showers located in McCollum Campground restroom.  Note: Rhododendron Campground closes for the season after the first weekend of November.

Clay Furnace Trail

This trail is mostly level grade with a few steep sections. It runs from the furnace parking area to the Henry Clay iron furnace.

Distance: 0.8 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Clay Run Trail

View the historic Henry Clay Iron Furnace at the end of this moderate hiking trail. The trail begins across the road from the McCollum camping area entrance.

Distance: 1.8 miles

Darnell Hollow Trail

This moderate to steep road/trail begins near the Calvary Church on Fairchance Road and ends at Chestnut Ridge Campground.

Distance: 4 miles

Difficulty: Moderate/steep

Eagle Trail

This very easy trail starts to the right of the gift shop and takes you to shelter #3 and the trailhead of Rock City Trail.

Distance: 0.3 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Glade Run Trail

This trail begins on the left of Sand Springs Road and ends at Messinger Lake.

Distance: 1.5 miles

Difficulty: Moderate to difficult

Goodspeed Highway Trail

This road/trail begins at the Quarry Run Road and leads to Chestnut Ridge Camp.

Distance: 3 miles

Johnson Hollow Trail

This moderate to steep hiking trail connects the Goodspeed Highway Trail with Quarry Run Road.

Ken's Run Trail

This moderate hiking trail runs from the old Sand Springs homestead to the archery range parking lot.

Distance: 4.5 miles

Lick Run Trail

This moderately steep trail begins at Sand Springs Road and ends at W.Va. 73.

McCollum Trail

This trail starts at McCollum Campground, crosses Ravens Rock Trail and connects with the main forest road. It is a great connector trail from the campground to Ravens Rock Trail or Coopers Rock Overlook via Roadside Trail.

Distance: 1 mile

Mont Chateau Trail

This trail that begins at the Henry Clay iron furnace and ends at Cheat Lake near the old Mont Chateau Lodge.

Distance: 2.6 miles

Rattlesnake Trail

This trail winds along the rocky cliffs that parallel the rim of the Cheat River canyon, and connects the concession stand and Rock City.

Distance:  0.7 miles

Ravens Rock Trail

This dual duty access road/trail begins at the gated road on the left, approximately 0.7 miles past the campground entrance. It leads to Ravens Rock overlook, which offers a spectacular view of the Cheat River Canyon.

Reservoir Loop Trail

This is a nice trail for those looking for an easy loop hike. It starts from the Clay Run Trail near the reservoir and loops back to Clay Run Trail.

Rhododendron Trail

This trail starts at the lower picnic area near shelter 3 and ends at the Henry Clay iron furnace. It is the perfect place to see our state flower, the rhododendron.

Ridge Trail

The ridge trail starts at the Rock City shelter, follows a moderate grade and connects with the Mont Chateau Trail.

Distance:  1.5 miles

Rock City Trail

This easy to moderate trail runs from picnic shelter 3 through the area known as Rock City.

Roadside Trail

This trail leads from the parking lot near the forest entrance to the overlook. It’s a great trail to hike to the overlook while staying off the road.

Scott Run Trail

The trail begins near the forest entrance parking area and ends at the McCollum camping area.

Distance: 2.5 miles

Underlook Trail

This trail gives a unique view from the underside of the geological formation that is Coopers Rock overlook.

Distance: 0.2 miles

Virgin Hemlock Trail

Visit a large hemlock grove which is over 300 years old at the end of this trail which starts at W.Va.73.

Distance: 1.2 miles

Intermediate Ski Trail

This trail is a connector trail between the Advanced Ski Trail and the Reservoir Ski Trail.

Distance: 0.6 miles

Advanced Ski Trail

This trail begins at the forest entrance parking area. For a short distance this trail shares Roadside Trail. When Roadside Trail forks off to the left, continue straight. The trail will lead you to the historic Henry Clay iron furnace.

Distance:  2.3 miles

Reservoir Ski Trail

Branching off the Advanced Ski Trail, this trail connects to the Reservoir Loop Trail.

Additional Information

Pack a picnic for a trail side lunch break! Numerous picnic sites and three shelters are provided for the enjoyment of forest visitors. These sites offer tables, grills, drinking water and restroom facilities. Reserve by calling the forest office at 304-594-1561.

The Trading Post

Visit the Trading Post at the scenic overlook area for souvenirs, snacks, toys, apparel, state forest merchandise and other items made in West Virginia.

Allegheny trail (alt).

The Allegheny Trail is a 311-mile north-south trail with its northern terminus on the Mason-Dixon Line at the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border near Bruceton Mills.  It wends its way south until meeting the Appalachian Trail on Peters Mountain at the Virginia-West Virginia border. Are you ready for an adventure? Area outfitters provide guided trips and shuttle services on the Cheat River for whitewater rafting. The Cheat at its peak runs up to Class IV+ rapids.
