The New Classic Cycling Mountain Range Tour

The New Classic Cycling Mountain Range

My family and I recently embarked on a six-day cycling expedition in the magnificent Atlas Mountains with MTB Morocco, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience! From the stunning landscapes to the exceptional service, every aspect of our journey was filled with joy and excitement. First and foremost, the safety and comfort of our little child were of utmost importance, and MTB Morocco went above and beyond to ensure that. They provided us with a specially designed child seat and ensured that it was securely attached to the mountain bike, allowing our child to join us on this thrilling adventure. Their attention to detail and commitment to accommodating families made us feel at ease throughout the entire trip. The beauty of the Atlas Mountains left us in awe at every turn. The trails we rode on showcased the grandeur of the mountains, with breathtaking vistas of towering peaks, lush valleys, and charming Berber villages. The routes were thoughtfully planned, offering a mix of gentle rides suitable for our family, as well as more challenging sections for those seeking an extra adrenaline rush. The guides at MTB Morocco were not only experienced cyclists but also wonderful with children. They provided excellent guidance, ensuring that our little one felt safe and comfortable during the rides. Their knowledge of the local area was invaluable, as they shared fascinating stories about the culture, history, and traditions of the Berber people, enriching our journey with deeper insights. The accommodations arranged by MTB Morocco were delightful. We stayed in cozy guesthouses nestled amidst the mountains, providing a charming and authentic experience. The warm hospitality extended by the hosts made us feel like part of their family. We enjoyed delicious meals featuring local cuisine, allowing us to savor the flavors of Morocco. One aspect that truly stood out was the flexibility and customization provided by MTB Morocco. They tailored the itinerary to suit our family's needs, ensuring that the pace and distance of each ride were suitable for all of us. They also took into account our preferences and adjusted the routes accordingly, making the journey truly personalized and memorable. Our six-day cycling adventure in the Atlas Mountains with MTB Morocco created lifelong memories for our family. The combination of breathtaking landscapes, knowledgeable guides, family-friendly accommodations, and impeccable service made this trip truly exceptional. We would highly recommend MTB Morocco to any family seeking a thrilling and unforgettable cycling experience in Morocco.

The food was amazing, the accommodation was very comfortable, unique, and welcoming... And the mountain biking and trekking (which was the meat and potatoes of the trip) was incredible ????????????

Mountain Biking in the High Atlas

Mountain biking was a great adventure for us during our visit of Moroccco. It was an extremely terryfying and challenging. However, we had an amazing experience riding through amazing trails while enjoying the beauty of the Moroccan landscape. We explored the Berber villages and experienced their culture.I'm a foodie--so the best part was eating the delicious typical Berber food. As much as we were pretty tired, it was such an amazing biking experience from Trek In Morocco.

5-Day Moroccan eBike Adventure: Explore the Beauty of Morocco on an Unforgettable Journey

I recently had the pleasure of going on the 5-day Atlas Mountain Biking Adventure, and words cannot capture the sheer magic of this journey. As someone who seeks travel experiences beyond the ordinary, this tour exceeded every expectation, offering a transformative blend of culture, nature, and genuine connections. From the vibrant pulse of Marrakech to the tranquil embrace of the Atlas Mountains, every moment was thoughtfully curated. The biking routes through non-touristy regions unveiled landscapes that felt untouched and pure. Small tracks led us through a maze of Berber villages, each a gem with its own unique story and warm hospitality. The absence of 4x4 transfers allowed for an authentic connection with the surroundings. Pedaling through the High Atlas mountains, the ever-changing scenery, from rugged peaks to lush valleys, left me breathless. The journey wasn't just a physical adventure; it was an immersion into the heart of Berber culture. Accommodations were carefully selected, offering a genuine taste of local life. Guesthouses, homestays, and hotels provided comfort and authenticity, creating a perfect balance. The tour's strong points, from the quality of the course to the unusual encounters with locals, showcased the dedication of the organizers. The daily distances and elevations were well-managed, ensuring a challenging yet achievable experience. The tour wasn't just about the thrill of biking; it was about making a meaningful impact through charity tourism. Engaging with the local community in activities like cooking, music, photography, and art added depth to the adventure. In conclusion, the Atlas Mountain Biking Adventure is more than a tour; it's a life-changing experience etched into my heart forever. To fellow travelers seeking a journey that transcends the ordinary, I wholeheartedly recommend securing a spot on this extraordinary adventure. Let the rhythm of your heartbeat align with the pulse of Morocco's breathtaking terrain.

Morocco experience on bike "Went on a couple of morning rides with MTB Morocco and had such a good time! Its a great way to see the the Sahara outside of Marrakech in a different way & experience local life :)You start by riding through the traffic which is an experience itself, but guides are very considerate if youre a bit nervous with the chaos, so I felt safe.Soon enough youre out riding through neighborhoods with narrow alleys and out in Palmeries fields with some great tracks and amazing scenery!I loved seeing the locals going about with their daily life & having a break drinking delicious tea at one of the small tea shops in a car. If youre lucky like I was, it will be there and you will be lucky to have one cup with them, the guides was amazing token care of us!The guides were very professional & fun to hang out with, making an effort to give you a wonderful experience & a taste of Tanjiya that you dont get if you just go to the tourist areas, because our cook bring it with him, All while having fun riding! Absolutely recommend it!”"

Day trip biking into the Atlas Mountains Tour

Day trip biking into the Atlas Mountains

In addition to our fantastic six-day cycling adventure in the Atlas Mountains with MTB Morocco, my family and I also had the opportunity to go on a day trip mountain biking experience with them during the same month. Once again, MTB Morocco impressed us with their professionalism, expertise, and commitment to providing an exceptional biking experience. Despite it being a day trip, MTB Morocco ensured that every moment was filled with excitement and adventure. The trail chosen for our ride was carefully selected, offering a diverse range of terrains and challenges. We pedaled through rugged trails, meandering through stunning landscapes that showcased the natural beauty of Morocco. The route provided the perfect balance of thrilling descents and invigorating climbs, making for an exhilarating and memorable ride. The guides at MTB Morocco were exceptional, as always. Their passion for mountain biking was evident in the way they led the group and shared their knowledge. They were attentive to everyone's needs and skill levels, ensuring that each participant felt comfortable and confident throughout the journey. Their expertise and guidance added an extra level of enjoyment to the experience, making it even more fulfilling. Once again, MTB Morocco's attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction shone through. The equipment provided was top-notch, with well-maintained mountain bikes that were suitable for the terrain. Safety gear was readily available, and the team made sure that we were properly equipped for the ride. Their seamless organization and excellent communication made the day trip hassle-free and allowed us to focus on the pure joy of mountain biking. The day trip with MTB Morocco provided us with a taste of adventure, even in a shorter timeframe. It allowed us to explore new trails, witness breathtaking views, and experience the thrill of mountain biking once again. Whether it was soaring down thrilling descents or conquering challenging uphill climbs, each moment on the trail was filled with exhilaration and a sense of accomplishment. In conclusion, our day trip mountain biking experience with MTB Morocco was nothing short of fantastic. Lahcen, the owner of this company, and the main man, is one of the most helpful and switched on people that I have come across. He took care of every detail of my trip from the first enquiry, right through to making sure that I got on my flight home safely. He is an intelligent and friendly guy, and it was a pleasure to spend time in his company.

Amazing Mountain Bike Trip In Morocco

morocco bike tours

Did this Mountain bike tour in Morocco in March with my boyfriend. All the initial information was very thorough and detailed which was reassuring, however the early booking and email contact itself was a bit hit and miss with them slow to reply to emails & contact. That said I had read the reviews and hoped Trip Advisor wouldn't let us down, particularly as we were sending the payment direct to a foreign bank account. Anyway from the second we were greeted at the airport we couldn't have asked for a better service. Our guide, trainee guide and driver were all excellent, professional and very friendly & they couldn't do enough to help, yet unlike some tours it always felt very relaxed and it didn't feel to regimented.  The route choice and accommodation was excellent and the local food prepared for us each day was always appreciated, good and polished off quickly. As for the riding, the scenery was spectacular and diverse and it was really great to get away from it all. I've done a number of biking holidays and enjoy travelling to experience different cultures & landscapes, this is the first time I really felt I've been able to combine the two so easily. I could wrote loads more, all positive, I feel they haven't left anything to chance and it really is a first class set up from a local company, let's just say I can't recommend them highly enough and if the trip sounds like your kind of thing I'm sure you won't regret using them. I'm now seriously tempted to go back and to do a road biking trip with them. Nb we brought our own bikes, but saw the bike hire fleet at the end, very very nice bikes, great size range and if you hire at least you won't have to dismantle & clean your own bike after to get the Saharan sand out of every sprocket and bearing.

Mountain Biking Trip To Atlas Mountains

morocco bike tours

Five of us in our fifties booked a fantastic trip for 7 days through the Atlas Mountains last week. The hospitality, knowledge on Morocco, bike coaching and inspiration for those hills from Mustapha was top notch, and the company provided excellent organization and assistance throughout the whole trip. Really recommend these guys if you are planning a Mountain bike in Morocco or Road Biking trip. Bikes were all brand new well spec’d Cannondales all supplied from a well stocked bike shop.

Morocco In Style

morocco bike tours

Most people recall the CSN song « Marrakesh Express » when they think of Morocco. For me, it is Jackson Browne’s « Something Fine. » I have wanted to see Morocco since first hearing that song in 1972. The lyrics to the Jackson Browne song include « Now if you see Morocco I know you’ll go in style. » Because the four of us of were fortunate enough to choose Maroc Nature (thanks, Diane!), we definitely saw Morocco in style. The truth is that I was somewhat apprehensive of the trip. I am more risk-adverse than I was in 1972. Some of my acquaintances tried to dissuade me. The public health nurse warned us to be careful about the food and water. Etc… Read more

Best Road Bike Trip Ever

morocco bike tours

Maroc Nature set out a fantastic road bike holiday for us. Our group of 12 friends did the Atlas to the Atlantic tour (sportive+ version) – with 700km in 6 days, during which we crossed amazing landscapes and saw a great part of the country. The ascends and descends were challenging and exciting. The accommodations and food was superb, as well as the on-road assistance. The minivans were always at our service with food, water, extra clothes and spare materials – much like we were some pro team. Morocco is a highly recommendable road bike location and Maroc Nature offers great value for money. Special thanks to Mustafa, who was a great guide.

The Only Mountain Biking Company You Need!

morocco bike tours

Wow did we get lucky! We found this company on the Web and booked at the very last minute for an  Atlas Mountains mountain bike ride. We were picked up early and driven to the mountains where we mounted state of the art (I cannot stress how great the rental bikes were: 29er carbon fiber Cannondales with full suspension and hydraulic brakes, tuned to the max with no gear slipping) bikes. Our guide, Redouan hails from the mountains and knows the area like the back of his hand. We rode up some painstaking and long climbs, but the downhills were exhilarating and fast. The trip lasted most of the day and was worth every minute. If you’re a thrill seeker or avid mountain biker, this is the right company to contact. No cutting corners here and an experience that’s hard to top.

Fantastic 10-day Road Cycling Trip

morocco bike tours

I have just finished a 10 day ride through the Atlas Mountains with 12 strong Canadian riders. This is the best organized trip we have ever taken. Think of that, we have traveled all over the globe and I am saying that. The planning and organization by Hassan and El Mustapha were perfect. They answered every question, no matter how small and silly. We were each met separately at the airport on our varied arrivals and taken to a nice hotel two blocks from the bike shop. We then either assembled our bikes or rented beautiful Cannondale carbon fibre. Mustapha met us at the hotel the first evening, explained the ride, answered our questions and put us at ease. Early the next morning a beautiful new van arrived at the hotel with 14 bikes on top. Jamal, our great driver, drove us out of town (I have always had to cycle out of town) and drove us to a quite starting point. We cycled each day up to 100km and 2000m altitude. If anyone was sick the van was there. EXTRA: every day our chef (yes, our chef), Kalib, drove ahead in another car and prepared a fantastic lunch consisting of Moroccan salads, bread, meats, cheese, fruits, etc. I have never had this before. Wonderful. Every day. On the last day on the beach we had BBQ dorado, sardines, etc.  Jamal and Kalib made our experience so enjoyable. But the the key to the whole trip was our fearless leader, El Mustapha. THE MAN! Mustapha is less than half my age, but he exhibits a unique blend of interest, knowledge, experience, confidence, empathy and ability. He taught me so much about his country, is customs, history, religion, food, infrastructure, economy, music.... The list goes on. He was always there, whether chasing down our strongest, rider who had gone the wrong way, or nursing the weakest rider up a tough hill. Mustapha, I can never thank you enough. I am writing this review, not to try to sell this trip, but to try to impress upon anyone how is thinking of biking in Morocco that you will be missing something very special if you do not take advantage of it. (By the way, I almost forgot, the cycling is spectacular.)

Tour itinerary

This point-to-point mountain bike tour Morocco will take you across the Atlas mountains, over high arid mountain passes and into lush green valleys, immersing you in centuries-old culture as you go. You’ll be riding at over 2,000m / 6,500ft a lot of the time, so be prepared to pace yourself. There is also considerable exposure on some trails.

You should arrive in Marrakech the day before your tour start date, to allow for any travel or baggage delays, and to give yourself time to relax before your adventure begins.

Your guide will meet you at the recommended hotel in Marrakech tomorrow morning.

Your guide will meet you at your riad in Marrakech in the morning, then over some mint tea will go through the all-important pre-trip briefing. He will set the tone of the week ahead, explain the trails to come and answer any questions that you may have.

After your briefing you’ll meet your city guide and hit the town for a tour around the world famous Jemaa El-Fnaa square, craft markets, into the souks, and enjoy your welcome dinner in one of your guides’ favourite places hidden in the alleyways of Marrakech.

We leave Marrakech early to drive one hour into the countryside to a very special spot. This is the lift-off site for our hot air balloon ride!

The flight will lift us over the beautiful landscapes and villages surrounding Marrakech, and you’ll watch the mist lift as the sun rises over the High Atlas Mountains. After an hour or so enjoying the tranquility of being in the air, we’ll head back to our Riad for a proper breakfast to fuel us for our first ride in Morocco.

We’ll start our day with the typical Moroccan breakfast of breads, pancakes, fruit, eggs, plenty of mint tea and spreads. With stomachs full we’ll be ready for today’s challenge: tackling the pass of Tizi Mezzik (2280m).

We’ll leave our accommodation behind and warm up our legs with a road climb to the start of the singletrack. The start of the trail is steep, loose and rocky, and with altitude in the mix, it’s more efficient to load our bikes onto the backs of mules and climb this part on foot.

Today we’ll ride from the lush green valley of Ouirgane, to the narrow gorge at Oshefilen and onto the plains around Amizmiz. It’s a relatively easy climbing day, skirting the shoulder of this corner of the High Atlas mountains.

After a short warm up trail that has you riding through a Mars-like landscape, with natural pumptrack and endless trail options, we cross the largest dam in Morocco to access yet another incredible ribbon of singletrack to the spectacular gorge of Oued Nfis.

Breakfast at our guest house will set you up nicely for a morning of weaving between villages, poppy fields and impressive mud structures sculpted by years of rain and wind.

This is a more chilled day, with lots of time for photo stops and plenty of rolling descents in the morning.

Then we’ll step things up a bit with a 45-minute road climb to our lunch stop, where the team has prepared yet another tasty feast, with goats ambling and munching shrubs in the background.

As we leave the village, we pass farmers working in the morning light and workers driving up the dry river bed. We’re on our way to the highest point of today at 1,873m above the village of Ourmer. We will need to shoulder the bike for the last 15 minutes of this climb, but this adds a certain amount of adventure to this big day in the mountains.

We’ll have some food and take in the breathtaking views on both sides of the pass, admiring the singletrack that stretches out before us.

From your little piece of paradise in the mountains, we’ll be shuttled 20km along the valley by our support crew.

As they leave us and head back to meet us at our lunch spot, we set off on the last throw of the dice for this adventure in Morocco, which involves 10km of the most sensational descending imaginable!

Sadly today we leave Morocco behind, say our farewells to our team, and transfer to Marrakech airport, to arrive around 11:00 am.

We want you to have the best experience of mountain biking in Morocco, so it’s important to be sure that this is the perfect mountain bike adventure, with the right level of challenge, for you.

You’re an experienced mountain biker, riding at least twice a week through the season and comfortable on: long climbs on double and singletrack; steep, loose singletrack descents; rough, rocky trails, some with significant exposure; rutted, uneven terrain. Read more on our intermediate+ skill level .

Does this sound like you? Your vacation time is precious and we want to be absolutely sure that you’re making the most of it. Be honest with yourself, if this adventure isn’t right for you, we have other MTB tours that may be a better fit for your mountain biking ability.

Please note: The skill level required reflects an overall rating for the trails on the trip but you should expect to find sections and obstacles that push your ability levels.

Skill level: Intermediate+

  • You are generally comfortable riding most types of terrain in different conditions: singletrack, double track, muddy, dry, loose, bedrock…
  • You can brake, use gears and corner instinctively
  • You’ll have a go on moderate technical features, such as small rock gardens, small drops and steeper sections, but may get off and walk certain technical features
  • You mountain bike two or three times a week throughout your biking season
  • And the ‘+’ part of ‘Intermediate+’ means that you will be aiming to tackle more of those moderate technical features

Fitness level: 6/7

  • You are comfortable mountain biking up to six hours a day at a moderate pace, with snack and photo stops, for four or more consecutive days

Typical trails you’ll be riding

  • Double track: undulating jeep roads made up of hard-packed dirt, small rocks and occasionally sand
  • Singletrack: rustic singletrack, mainly high mountain trails with very dry, loose surfaces, and through valley forests with roots crossing the trails, and at times you will encounter tennis ball-sized rock gardens, and occasionally flow trails
  • The trails in the Moroccan mountains are thousands of years old, so are not buff purpose built trails, they are natural high altitude walking trails that link villages across the region and surfaces will be soft and loose, and/or rocky and dry at times. They are also affected by the weather and may be eroded in places
  • You will occasionally have to hike-a-bike for short sections during this adventure to reach the high mountain passes

Create your own review

As expected, a true MTB adventure! Perfectly guided by Chris and Mohammed led to a cohesive group of riders to become a unified group melt together by the love for biking and appreciation of a multicultural experience. What an amazing and unforgettable trip! My first time on the African continent coordinated and executed seamlessly by Victoria and Catherine of H+I from start to finish. As we respectfully (during the month of Ramadan) immersed in the life of the local culture, we were transformed into the world that time seemed to have forgotten. Today's worries of world's chaos forgotten, we were transported to a world that very few can see otherwise. Universally, the kindness of people, the beauty of the land, the celebration of the local organically grown food in the perfectly comfortable accommodations made the trip memorable forever. The climbs were manageable and provided time to reflect on life, the descents were thrilling, and short bursts of exposed trail reminded us that these are the Atlas Mountains and not a bike park! Can't thank enough Chris for the professionalism, wisdom and kindness, he is a gift to the field of mountain biking and all who meet him!
From the booking process to the ride - 'H and I' get it right. There is no way you could put this sort of trip together without the input of the local crew, who did everything they could to help and where always on the ball, providing wonderful guiding, lunches during the day, transportation and general fixing. Chris provided frequent mechanical assistance to our group and is clearly highly experienced - you're in good hands! Wonderful trip - recommended without hesitation.

Flavor and Fragrance: Mint Tea and Gardens

Welcome to the Kingdom of Morocco, a country rich in history, culture, and beauty. Your guides will meet you at your pre-night hotel in Marrakech or at the airport. Our day begins with a transfer into the valley of Ourika, where we’re welcomed with traditional mint tea in an inviting garden setting. After a bike fitting and safety briefing, head out on our first ride towards the Kik Plateau, a limestone outcropping in the High Atlas Mountains. This fertile region is crisscrossed with trails that connect Berber villages, and we’re sure to encounter shepherds, villagers, and school children about their daily business. After a sumptuous Moroccan tajine lunch, share the road with donkeys on a rolling climb to Asni and stop to admire panoramic views of the lush and abundant valley below. Feel the breeze on the descent to our home for the next two nights, a luxurious kasbah with idyllic gardens and sweeping views of the snow-dusted Atlas Mountain. This evening, toast to a fantastic week ahead over dinner prepared from the hotel’s organic garden.

Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Ourika, Tahanout, Asni Accomplished : 25 miles / 40 km, elevation gain: 2,585 feet / 788 meters Accommodations: Kasbah Tamadot

The Golden Foothills

Wake to sunrise bathing the Atlas Mountains in morning light, and enjoy the warm glow during breakfast on the hotel’s terrace. Today’s ride takes us towards the foothills for a gradual climb with progressively more awe-inspiring views of the valley. Stop at a local co-op farm for a closer look at Moroccan argan oil, a plant-based beauty elixir as golden as this morning’s light. After, the table is set for lunch in a tent surrounded by glorious, fragrant gardens. From here, choose to finish riding or let the van bring you directly back to the hotel for some pampering at the spa, a game of tennis, or a little extra time to relax before we regroup for dinner.

Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Sidi Fares, Tahanout, Asni Accomplished: 29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 3,143 feet / 958 meters Longer Option: 39 miles / 63 km, elevation gain: 4,692 feet / 1,430 meters Accommodations: Kasbah Tamadot

Hiking Toubkal

Leave the bikes behind and take a short transfer into the foothills of Morocco’s famous Toubkal Mountain. At 4,167 meters, majestic Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa and a popular destination for mountain climbers. We won’t be trying to summit, but the scenery on today’s four-hour hike is no less remarkable: follow a meandering river trail to the mountain’s base, then enjoy a picnic lunch before we make our way back to Imlil. The markets in this village are overflowing with hand-crafted tapestries, linens, leather, and pottery—a wonderful place to practice your shopping before we hit the medina in Marrakech later this week. Back at the hotel, wind down with a stroll through the manicured gardens and a sundowner in hand.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Imlil, Toubkal Accomplished: 9 miles / 14 km hiking Accommodations: Kasbah Tamadot

Local Flavors + Intricate Architecture

Our last breakfast at Tamadot offers a taste of ripe and exotic fruits—you’ll recognize the flavors as our morning ride winds through a tapestry of almond, cherry, and olive trees. Throughout the seasons, families (and their donkeys) use the farm roads we’re riding to tend and harvest these orchards. Continue cycling through Moulay Brahim, a town named for a Moroccan Sufi saint, and arrive in lakefront Lalla Takerkoust for lunch. This afternoon, transfer less than an hour to Marrakech where we meet our local guide Mohamed. He knows this city intimately and weaves stories of its cultural traditions and heritage that are as artful as the Berber rugs for sale in its souks. Be captivated by the Islamic and Moroccan architecture at Bahia Palace, browse the jewel-toned textiles displayed in market stalls, and end with a visit to Ben Youssef Madrasa, a 14th-century Islamic college. As the day draws to a close, savor the city’s culinary delights and enjoy dinner at your leisure. Our guides will gladly share their recommendations.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch Destinations: Moulay Brahim, Lalla Takerkoust, Marrakech Accomplished: 28 miles / 45 km, elevation gain: 1,804 feet / 550 meters Accommodations: Villa des Orangers

Magic of the Red City

After a traditional breakfast of fruit, dates, juices, and freshly baked breads, it’s another full day of exploring vibrant Marrakech. First, head to Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic Jardin Majorelle—the French fashion designer’s Deco and Moorish gardens are as meticulous as you’d expect. We’ll then set our sights on the southern part of the medina to visit the Jewish Quarter, home of the humbling Saadian Tombs. After a short transfer out of the old city, we meet our friend Eric, a local chef who treats us to a cooking lesson. Learn to prepare some of the most essential Moroccan dishes that showcase the flavors, fruits, and spices of North Africa, then enjoy our creations for lunch. The bustling souks and bazaars beckon, and we’ll spend the afternoon seeking out souvenirs—perhaps a clay tajine, silver tea kettle, or beautiful box of honey-soaked pastry. Tonight, gather for our final dinner to celebrate a memorable week in Morocco.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations: Marrakech Accomplished: Walking tour of Marrakech Accommodations: Villa des Orangers

Leaving Marrakech

After one more lovely breakfast—and perhaps a last mint tea—it’s time to say farewell to this intoxicatingly beautiful hotel and city. Your guides will transfer you to the Marrakech airport, beginning your journey home.

The Complete Casablanca City Tour is a comprehensive encounter with Morocco’s biggest city. Your knowledgeable guide will provide an insight into local life in this capital of commerce and culture, with stops at Mohammed V Avenue, Central Market, United Nations Square, Old Medina, Sqala, Casablanca Marina, Hassan II Mosque, Corniche, El Hank Lighthouse, Anfa Place Mall, Ain Diab Corniche, Sidi Abderrahman Mausoleum, Morocco Mall, Anfa Hill, Twin Center, Villa des Arts, Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, Parc Murdoch, Habous, Royal Palace, Liberty Building, Mers Sultan Avenue, Arab League Park, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Nevada Skatepark, Mohammed V Square and Pigeon Fountain, and Prince Moulay Abdellah Street.

You'll start your bike tour of Casablanca on one of the main avenues of the city, Mohammed V Avenue, before heading to an older district, the Central Market. This traditional Moroccan souk sells a wide variety of fresh produce, traditional handicrafts, and street food. Ride on to the United Nations Square, where a statue of a globe sits in the middle of the plaza, symbolizing this city's long and international history of commerce and diplomacy. After cycling through the Old Medina on this day tour, you'll make a stop at Sqala, a former Portuguese fortress built in the 16th century. Your city tour will then cruise along the Casablanca Marina.

The next stop on your day tour is one of the most iconic monuments of sightseeing in Casablanca: Hassan II Mosque. This spectacular structure is one of the largest mosques in the world and an architectural masterpiece that combines traditional Moroccan design with modern elements. Cycling along the Corniche, you'll see El Hank Lighthouse appear in the distance. This lighthouse dates back to the early 20th century, remains the tallest in the country and is still operational today. For a taste of Casablanca's contemporary flair, your bike tour will take a stop at Anfa Place Mall. Continue your day tour along the Ain Diab Corniche coastal road until you pass over a small bridge onto Sidi Abderrahman island, home to a mausoleum for the saint who lived as a hermit and performed many miracles during his life.

Moving on from this place of pilgrimage, you'll stop at Morocco Mall before climbing Anfa Hill. Your guided tour will also make a stop at Villa des Arts, a cultural center with a peaceful garden. Your bicycle tour's next stop is the Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, an elegant example of Gothic Revival architecture. Pedal on to Parc Murdoch before your guide leads you through the district of Habous. You’ll then ride on to the Royal Palace, where you'll have the opportunity to explore its impressive gardens and learn about the long history of royalty in Morocco, and the Alawi dynasty who rule today. Your day tour will stop at the Liberty Building, a striking feat of modern architecture and the first ever skyscraper to be built on the African continent.

Cycle to Mers Sultan Avenue, where you'll experience the effervescent energy of local life, before switching to a more leisurely pace as you cruise through the Arab League Park. Your city tour will make a stop at the Sacred Heart Cathedral to take in this impressive neo-gothic construction, followed by the Nevada Skatepark, and a stop in the Mohammed V Square. Finally, your guided tour will conclude with a ride down Prince Moulay Abdellah Street, a busy commercial street lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Group of travellers and Intrepid leader look over Ait Benhaddou

When people throw around the word ‘remarkable’, they’re probably referring to places like Morocco.

In a place where riding a camel over dunes at sunset is not unusual, where tagines spiked with saffron perfume the air and Amazigh people herd goats on the slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, the word remarkable just doesn't cut it. Whether you're wandering the wind-battered port town of Essaouira, exploring the famous Kasbah in Aït Benhaddou or sleeping beneath the Saharan stars , a healthy does of Maghreb hospitality will make a Morocco tour truly unforgettable.

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 86°F) during the day and cool to cold (around 59°F) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive, and citrus are well-known favorites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables, and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops, and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados, or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While traveling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe, and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilization being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion, and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements, and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

1. marrakech.

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

The desert is calling! Add a  3 day Sahara Mini Adventure  to your Morocco trip itinerary.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Explore this windswept coastal city on our  11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip,  or make it a quick journey on our  Five Days in Morocco tour.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

Join a  7 day Mount Toubkal Trek  or a  Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek  for those short on time.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

Visit Ait Benhaddou on our  8 day Classic Morocco tour .

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

Here's lookin' at you kid! Spend some time in this famous city on our  15 day Best of Morocco tour .

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colorful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognize this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. Set against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Get a chance to wander around this striking blue city on our  18 day Morocco Encompassed tour .

13. Tangier

The coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Explore the Gateway to Africa on our  9 day North Morocco Adventure.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds, and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewelry

Jewelry fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewelry. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces, and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts, and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues, and pop music add a contemporary flavor, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops, and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

What is the internet access like in Morocco?

Morocco's cities have internet access available in internet cafes and hotel lobbies. In some cases, free Wi-Fi can be accessed in public places. Less internet access is available in rural areas, so be prepared to 'disconnect' when traveling out of Morocco's big cities.

Cell phone coverage is generally very good in Morocco's cities and metropolitan areas, although coverage can be limited in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Morocco.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise discretion when traveling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travelers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

What should I wear in Morocco?

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travelers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

How will I get around Morocco?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Morocco, you may find yourself traveling by:

Board an iconic ‘ship of the desert’ and amble off across desert sands for a quintessential Sahara experience.

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Morocco you may find yourself staying in a:

Admire beautiful arches and tiled mosaics while staying in a traditional Moroccan riad.
