The Dominican Republic is the undisputed most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, has, on average, 6.1 million people visiting for vacation. That is 2 million more than Cuba, the second most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean. So what are some of the more popular attractions in the  Dominican Republic ? Below we list out the top 10.

Places to Visit in Dominican Republic

1. punta cana.

Located on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana has some of the best beaches in the country. As one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Dominican Republic, thousands of tourists flock to the beaches of Punta Cana to relax and have some fun.

If you are looking for a premier resort destination, a couple’s retreat, and friendly accommodations combined with water sports activities, you should add Punta Cana to one of the places to visit in the Dominican Republic. The city has a 35km stretch of pristine beaches for ultimate beachside relaxation and is open to outdoor activities like golfing and horse riding. Punta Cana’s beaches are also famous for water sports, including surfing and kayaking. Other exciting things you can do here include swimming with sharks and dolphins, catamaran sailing , whale watching , zip lining , and speed boat racing.

You should spend several days in Punta Cana if you intend to experience it all. Pack your swimsuits, dive into the crystal-blue pool of the hidden cenote, or go off-road on buggies in nearby tropical jungles. Also, you can go on quick excursions to the nearby Saona Island , where you will find an unspoiled natural reserve filled with marine wildlife. Or, take a stop at Pirate Rum Factory, where you can learn about rum production and have a taste too.

Another notable site in this city is Scape Park , where adventure seekers can enjoy a zipline tour, dune buggies, and visit the refreshing Hoyo Azul Lagoon. Aside from beaches, Punta Cana also boasts excellent dining spots, bars, and spas to relax and refuel.

2. Playa Dorada Beach

If you are coming to Playa Dorada, you should plan to be very busy because there are many things to do here. Playa Dorada is one of the most popular beach destinations on the Dominican Republic’s northern coastline. This massive resort complex, known as the country’s first tourism destination, lies on a gorgeous stretch of replenished beach surrounded by coconut palms. The resort area is home to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course and has many facilities and amenities, including restaurants, bars, and shops.

If you seek a less crowded beach, you’ll find Playa Dorado perfect. This location often has few people at once, offers privacy and tranquility, and is best if you want to explore the beach area without noise. The beach also has many luxury resorts with modern facilities, and it’s a good area to swim, snorkel, and kayak. You can observe the sea floors for coral reefs and varieties of marine fauna. Other fun things include taking a walk under the palm trees, taking a diving course, and enjoying golf on the beach.

Also, this destination is home to some fine restaurants, bars, and pubs where you can try local and continental delicacies and discover Dominican Republic culture.

3. Exploring Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is the country’s capital and offers visitors some of the best things to do in the Dominican Republic. This is the city where Christopher Columbus first landed, so expect some Old World charm with remnants of the colonial past scattered throughout the city.

Santo Domingo is also the city of many firsts. It is the first city founded by the Spanish in the Americas and has the first fortress and first university. Santo Domingo also has the first and oldest existing cathedral in the Western hemisphere, aptly named the First Cathedral of America.

Furthermore, the historic city is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Colonial City (Zona Colonial) , which boasts Spanish old-world architecture and quaint cobblestone streets. Other notable sites showcasing the country’s rich cultural history include The Plaza de la Cultura, which houses the Palace of Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Palace. Also, while you are there, you should stop at the historic district, where you will see some of the country’s most majestic buildings reflecting Middle Ages architecture.

Most of the houses today in Santo Domingo have a colonial architectural style that takes you back to the old era, so history and architecture lovers will enjoy roaming this city a lot. Another notable spot in the area is the old colonial palace of Christopher Columbus’ familiarly called the Alcazar de Colon. This site is now a museum where visitors can explore and browse through period furniture and decorations.

As one of the largest cities in the country, Santa Domingo also boasts the bustle and beauty of modern-day life. Expect to find many fine dining restaurants, bistros, nightclubs, and bars where you can enjoy your nights or afternoons.

4. Lake Enriquillo & Parque Nacional Isla Cabritos

Lake Enriquillo (Lago Enriquillo) is the largest lake in the Dominican Republic and the whole of the Caribbean. The abundance of flamingos and iguanas is one of the main attractions at this large saltwater lake. Located in its center is the Parque Nacional Isla Cabritos, one of the largest natural reserves of American Crocodiles and home to over 100 species of flora. The park is also a refuge for about 62 bird species making it a great place to admire exotic birds in their natural habitat.

One of the fun things you can do here is taking a boat trip along the waters while getting a glimpse of fascinating animals like pink flamingos , iguanas, salt crocs, and American crocodiles. We recommend you wear your hat and fill up your water bottle while coming here, as the heat is intense, especially when taking a boat ride. You should also keep in mind that there are no restaurants around this area, so you may want to bring your snacks. While you are here, you can visit Isla Cabritos, a small island within the lake where you find beautiful cacti and desert flora.

5. Eastern National Park (Parque Nacional del Este)

Eastern National Park features white sandy beaches, flora, waterfalls, and diverse animals, making it one of the best tourist attractions in the Dominican Republic. The rich biodiversity of the Eastern National Park (Parque Nacional del Este) has made it the ideal habitat for abundant tropical plants and animal species. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this national park covers a total area of 161.75 square miles and boasts a variety of biodiversity, including over 500 species of flora.

Eastern National Park also has one of the largest marine parks in the Caribbean, with manatees, bottlenose dolphins, four species of sea turtles, as well as numerous species of fish. The park is also home to the rare Paloma Coronita, also known as the crowned, or white-headed dove, in addition to the rhinoceros iguana and 112 bird species. This rainforest also boasts coral reefs and white sandy beaches, making it an excellent spot for snorkelers, scuba divers, and visitors who want to explore underwater treasures.

In addition to flora and fauna, Eastern National Park is also of historical significance as it features an archaeological site featuring artifacts, human remains, and cave art of the Taino Indians. You can also attend one of the educational seminars at the site to learn about the Taino people, their culture, beliefs, and myths about them. And to add to it, Eastern National Park has about 400 caves that visitors can explore through hiking.

6. Samaná Peninsula and Samaná Bay

Samana Bay is one of the best spots in the Dominican Republic to watch whales in the wild . In January and February, the Samana Bay Peninsula is a prime spot to see humpback whales birth their calves. While the whales are just one of many marine animals that frequent Samana Bay waters, they are the most popular reason visitors love coming here. If you are interested in whale watching, we recommend you plan your journey towards winter because this is when the big fishes migrate.

The bay of Samana is also an ideal spot for nature lovers. Here you will find the Parque Nacional Los Haïtises , a natural utopia of lush vegetation, crystal clear waters, thick mangroves, and unique rock formations rising from the sea.

In addition, you can take a boat or kayak trip around Los Haitises National Park . Visitors can also explore the bird-filled caves like the Cueva del Angel and the Salto El Limón waterfall, one of the country’s most scenic beaches. El Limon (The Lemon) drops 50 meters near the Atlantic Coast side of the Dominican Republic. Getting here is an adventure because you have to cross several rivers on horseback or walk a 40-minute trail over the steep terrain. But it’s all worth it when you take a dip in the spectacular swimming hole down the falls.

While you are here, we recommend you spend some time at Las Galeras , located at the tip of the Samana Peninsula. This spot is perfect for backpackers and beach lovers as you will find incredible beaches like Cayo Levanrado, Playa Rincon, and Playa Bonita.

7. Bahia de Las Aguilas and Jaragua National Park

If you love beaches, we recommend you add Bahia de Las Aguilas to your list of best places to visit in the Dominican Republic. The remote Bahía de Las Águilas is a six-mile stretch of magnificent, unspoiled beach on the Dominican Republic’s southwestern coast within the Jaragua National Park. The protected Jaragua National Park abounds with marine life and several species of birds. Also, this park has been on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage list since 2018. The nearest town to this tourist destination is Perdernakee which is about an hour away by car.

If you come to Bahia de Las Aguilas , it will surely become one of your favorite beaches in the world. The stunning turquoise water, the powdery white sands, and the lush palm trees make it one of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the Dominican Republic. This area is a little bit isolated, and while you won’t find luxury resorts or hotels like in Punta Cana, you will find a very relaxed atmosphere and unique experiences.

If you are in for outdoor activities, you could also rent some snorkeling, paddle boarding, or kayaking equipment to explore the crystal clear waters. You will find some popular species in the water, including starfish, octopus, lobster, urchin, and other fishes. Another fun thing to do here is to view the pristine area through a scenic helicopter flight organized by Eco del Mar.

8. Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia

The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia (aka Basilica of Our Lady) ranks among the most important religious sites in the Dominican Republic and draws people from all over the country to its annual Mass on January 21 each year. After the annual mass on this day comes a celebration that continues around the cathedral and involves food and drinks. If you happen to be in the country during this period, this is the ideal spot to be on that day.

The Roman Catholic Basilica honors Our Lady of Altagracia with a framed painting on display since 1571. The building, which is known as a leading pilgrimage center in Latin America, is also recognized as a modern architectural wonder. It stands out for its 69-meter-high arch and a bronze and gold entrance that thousands of people visit yearly. Architectural fans will, of course, love the beautiful, unique design of the place.

9. La Romana

Set on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, La Romana is home to the luxurious Casa de Campo Resort, where the rooms were partly decorated by famous Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta. The Teeth of the Dog golf course, one of the best in the Caribbean, is also located at this resort. La Romana is also close to the popular cruise destination of Isla Catalina.

One of the best things to do at La Romana is to visit The Altos de Chavón , a quaint replica of a 16th-century artisans’ village in La Romana. While at this Mediterranean-style village, you can shop for unique souvenirs and crafts to take home. You can also join a guided tour to go on a shopping trip to this artisan’s village.

The southern port of La Romana also once enjoyed a booming sugar industry in 1917. Even now, you will see the sugar plantations along the Chavón River. Other things to do here include visiting Bayahibe , a small fishing village now a full-fledged vacation destination where you can engage in exciting water sports activities, shop local artifacts, and have a glimpse of whales/dolphins. Also, from Bayahibe, you can take a ride to Isla Saona (Saona Island) for more things to do in the Dominican Republic.

La Romana is not far from Punta Cana and has a lot of large resorts and luxury hotels perfect for travelers looking to self-cater. Also, La Romana has a lot of galleries to view artworks, restaurants to enjoy great cuisines, and courses for golf lovers.

10. Jarabacoa

If you are looking for things to do in the Dominican Republic, especially adventure activities, don’t miss out on going to Jarabacoa. Also known as the city of everlasting spring, Jarabacoa is a perfect spot for summer retreats and outdoor adventures, especially for nature lovers.

In Jarabacoa, you will find Río Yaque del Norte , the country’s only whitewater river. The area also offers an amazing taste of ecotourism with its waterfalls, including the Jimenoa and Baiguate waterfalls, rivers, and rugged terrain. The destination is fast becoming a popular spot for rafters and adventurers, and is perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and other types of exploration.

If you love adventures, consider crossing the Jimenoa River on the wood and rope footbridge available. You can also consider golfing on a nine-hole course or visit the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria del Evangelio.

If you are spending more than a week in the Dominican Republic, then it’s worth coming up to Jarabacoa, especially if you happen to be traveling between Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata. You can also plan your trip in February to experience some of the most famous carnivals and parties in the country.

With the Dominican Republic being a hub for tourists, it is indeed a perfect place to have adventures, learn about their history, and relax. There are plenty of places to visit in the Dominican Republic, and it’s always a good time to plan a trip to this island.

Top 20 Breathtaking Spots in the Dominican Republic

Tourism in the Dominican Republic has been accelerating at a dizzying pace, and it’s easy to see why it has become a highly sought-after holiday destination owing to its hundreds of miles of coastline, picturesque views, and colonial architecture. From exploring this gorgeous island, here are some of my favourite places…

1. Punta Cana

Punta Cana

Punta Cana is located in the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic and is known for its beaches, facing the Atlantic and Caribbean. The area has upscale hotels and fantastic golf courses in a truly romantic setting.

There are plenty of all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana, and numerous activities are available, from reef exploration to catamaran sailing.

With average temperatures ranging from the late 20s to early 30s, I highly recommend relaxing on the sands of one of the world’s best beaches.

2. Samana Province

Samana Province Dominican Republic

Samana is an Atlantic-facing stretch of coastline, including the beaches of Playa Rincón, La Playita Beach, and Cayo Levantado in the northern area of the DR. It was famously discovered by Christopher Columbas in 1492, who was greeted by a barrage of arrows by the locals; thankfully, tourists are more welcomed now, with an international airport opening in 2006!

Its tropical forests, coconut groves, and hundreds of tiny, sandy alcoves are still relatively unexplored by tourist hordes, and that’s why I love this place!

Still, its unique selling point is that it is the special breeding place for humpback whales, and thousands of them congregate off the coast of Samana from January to March.

Indeed, the national parks, unspoiled bays, and peninsulas are only a bonus after watching these gentle giants frolic in the crystal, turquoise waters. Week-long live-on-board excursions can be arranged for an even more intimate experience, offering the rare opportunity to snorkel alongside the whales.

3. Parque Nacional del Este

Parque Nacional del Este

A visit to Eastern National Park is a special treat for any nature enthusiast. As one of the largest marine parks in the Caribbean, it has a fantastic offshore coral reef system that offers stunning diving opportunities and allows divers to encounter a myriad of marine life.

Those who prefer dry land will not be disappointed with over a hundred species of birds, remote beaches, and tropical forests. All the ingredients for a romantic getaway with a difference!

There is also evidence of early Taino activity, and visitors are treated to the rare cave drawings along the area, documenting early indigenous life.

4. Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial

Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial

This historic neighborhood of Santo Domingo is the oldest European settlement in the New World and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It’s located on the west bank of the Ozama River and exudes romance with delightful pastel-colored buildings, colorful hanging baskets, beautifully restored mansions, and cobblestone streets.

You feel nostalgic as you follow in the footsteps of the conquistadors. Among the many tourist attractions of the quarter are the Calle Las Damas, the New World’s oldest paved street, dating from 1502, the 16th-century cathedral, the 19th-century bronze statue of Christopher Columbas, and the fabled home of Herman Cortes.

Spend an afternoon steeped in history, meandering through the area, sipping strong coffee in the roadside cafes, or checking out the local craft for sale in the many little shops on street corners.

5. Saona Island

Beautiful Dominican Republic

Although this little isle is part of the national park, it deserves some column inches of its own and is widely considered the most popular part of the park.

The panorama alternates between idyllic stretches of coastline, acres of mangrove swamp, and the tiny fishing hamlet—the only inhabited part of the island.

For tourists, this tropical paradise island is easily accessible by boat or catamaran. Tourism has increased significantly thanks to its desert island setting and its rise to fame as the location for filming the Bounty bar advert! Wow!

6. Bahía de las Águilas

Bahia de las Aguilas

This island’s beaches are known for their crystal clear water. This means ‘Eagle Bay,’ an 8km stretch of sandy and blue water considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by locals and visitors alike.

The main reason for this is that it is completely unspoiled and virtually isolated, miles away from the major tourist regions, and needs to be accessed by boat or by finding a local tour guide from the tiny fishing village of La Cueva (the cave).

Once here, a local villager will oblige you by driving you to the isolated sandy stretch for a small fee. Although getting here can be a bit of a mission, it is worth it to lie out on one of the world’s most romantic stretches of coastline.

7. Paradise Island and The Mangroves

Mangroves Dominican Republic

Speedboats take you to this breathtaking deserted island with rolling, white sandy beaches, perfect coral reefs, and sparkling turquoise waters.

I highly recommend snorkelling with a guide and allowing the tropical fish to eat out of your hand! If snorkelling is not your thing, take a boat ride through the mangrove forests or enjoy lunch in a traditional fishing village’s formal restaurant.

Day trips to the island operate daily, and a tour guide will explain the natural history of marine and land life and the conservation projects underway.

8. La Romana

La Romana Dominican Republic

La Romana is located at the island’s southeast end, with numerous golf courses, beaches, diving locations, and other outdoor adventures.

Stop by a working cigar factory to see how everything is put together, or visit the 7,000-acre resort, Casa de Campo, which provides everything you need to make your vacation memorable.

The golf courses alone are considered some of the best in the Caribbean, but the area provides many activities that will make you never want to leave.

9. Playa Rincon

Playa Rincon - Dominican Republic

Some people claim that Christopher Columbus first landed on this beach in 1492, but even if this cannot be proven, Playa Rincon is a place I highly recommend adding to your itinerary!

It consists of two miles of some of the whitest sand beaches and the most fantastic water you’ve ever seen, and it is often thought of as one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Caribbean.

It is only a 20-minute boat ride from Las Galeras, which is a lot of fun. Most of all, though, it offers lots of opportunities for fun in the sun, regardless of what you enjoy doing there.

10. Bayahibe

Bayahibe - beauty spots in Dominican Republic

This gorgeous resort town and former fishing village offers a beautiful beach a mile from town, some of the best scuba diving places in the country, and more than 20 dive sites.

You can also go snorkelling or paddle-boarding, and you can even catch a boat and visit Saona and the nearby national park. Bayahibe is conveniently located and easy to get to, and its tree-lined beaches are something to behold.

Regardless of what you enjoy doing outside, it’s very likely this town will provide it to you.

11. Cabarete

Cabarete - best places to visit in the Dominican Republic

Known as one of the best places for kite-surfing, the town also offers kayaking, swimming, snorkelling, and cave exploring, not to mention enough eateries and shopping opportunities to keep you busy for a long time.

It has even hosted several international kite-surfing events and is one of the top surfing spots in the entire Caribbean. People who love action sports especially love the town because it offers so much to do and is small enough that anyone can quickly find anything they’re looking for.

12. El Limon Waterfall

El Limon Waterfall

Found near the Atlantic Coast side of the island, this waterfall has a 170-foot drop that does not look spectacular.

Getting there is a challenge—you’ll have to cross a few rivers—but you can jump right in as soon as you reach the waterfall, and the swimming hole at the bottom is just as extraordinary.

You can also walk the 40-mile trail to get there, but regardless of which method you choose, you’ll enjoy soaking in the cool water as soon as you arrive.

13. Jarabacoa

Jarabacoa Dominican Republic

Located in the Cordillera Central Mountains, the eco-tourism center consists of quaint little stores and boutiques, hiking and mountain climbing trails, gorgeous waterfalls, wooden shacks, and everything else that makes the area unique and wonderful.

Commonly called the Dominican Alps, the town even offers rafting opportunities on the Yaque del Norte River, and the view of the waterfalls alone is worth the trip.

If you love lush green outdoor areas and appreciate nature, I highly recommend it here!

14. Las Terrenas

Las Terrenas

Until 1946, this was a small fishing village. However, it is a tourist spot unknown to many that offers white sandy beaches, clear, sparkling water, and some of the most beautiful landscapes you’ve likely ever seen.

Only a two-hour drive from the capital, Las Terrenas is popular with tourists and locals alike, and the area’s beaches are stunning.

You can also visit a few beaches to watch the dolphins or the whales. If you’re going to taste what makes the local areas unique and you love spending time in the water, this is the town for you.

15. Playa Dorada

Playa Dorada

Located roughly three miles east of Puerto Plata, Playa Dorada is a set of 12 different resorts, all of which are all-inclusive and offer everything you need to remain there for your entire vacation if that’s what you want.

With beautiful beaches and resorts that are there for your satisfaction only, you can enjoy a host of sights and activities that will keep you going the entire time, regardless of how long you stay there and what you were looking for in the first place.

16. Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata

A renowned city, Puerto Plata was once a very prosperous port city but still offers beautiful beaches, many distinguished places to shop, and many areas of historical and cultural significance.

Landmarks such as Fort San Felipe, Mount Isabel de Torres, and the Old Quarter are included.

I love that this city showcases the island’s diversity with its unique combination of Victorian, modern, and colonial structures throughout the area. Whether you want to shop, eat, or hang out with some terrific people, it has it all!

17. Lago Enriquillo

Lago Enriquillo

This salty relic of an ancient oceanic channel is known for its elusive inhabitants of crocodiles and iguanas. It is one of the few lakes in the world that is home to crocodiles and has been declared a wild reserve offering sanctuary to many species of birds, giving visitors a chance to observe many of these captivating creatures in their natural habitat.

Tourists check in at the small visitor center with information about the island’s history, and local guided tours offer boat tours of the park that lasts about an hour.

Remember to bring suntan lotion (temperatures in summer have been recorded as upwards of 45 degrees) and wear covered shoes, as the odd scorpion abounds.

The Dominican Republic is so much more than just beach resorts; it is one of the most geographically and naturally diverse countries of the Caribbean, with stunning scenery, breathtaking sunsets, and bustling, evocative colonial cities.

Unfortunately, so many visitors spend all their time in their beach resort; following this list of must-sees, there’s so much more to be gained by stepping outside and experiencing the real Dominican Republic.

18. Damajagua Cascades

damajaqua_fallsa.pg

This is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the DR and is located in Puerto Plata. Following admission to the park, travellers will follow an English-speaking guide for a 25-30-minute trek to the hills of the Northern Corridor, where the 27 waterfalls are nestled.

Visitors to the park can opt for a different package and visit one or two of the waterfalls; they are offered the chance to climb to the top of each cascade with the help of a guide the way down.

Jump! What could be more exhilarating than splashing into a warm, sparkling pool of clear water at the base of a glistening waterfall? (Don’t worry, safety gear is provided for each participant!).

Most visitors to the park comment that ‘La Tinjita ‘ is the most exciting waterfall. Unlike its counterparts, it has raised curved edges on either side of the torrent of water, resembling a natural water slide.

This unique shape ensures tourists get a wild ride to the pool at the bottom- worth leaving your resort hotel room for.

19. Peninsula de Samaná

Whale watching in Peninsula de Samaná - The Dominican Republic

If you want to go whale-watching, Samaná is the ideal place. During peak season, between January and March, over 300 whales come to the bay from Greenland and Iceland.

Once they start their journey towards Samaná Bay, their route includes Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, and the Gulf of Mexico. There is a high chance that you will be able to witness their acrobatic moves.

The whale nursery is strongly protected; only credited boats can enter the bay. However, they also have restrictions. As you can imagine, the bay becomes a birthing centre where they need all the care and peace as the new calves are born.

20. Hoyo Azul Lagoon

Hoyo Azul lagoon - The Dominican Republic

If you are looking for a famous destination, Hoyo Azul Lagoon is your pick. This stunning place offers crystal-clear water and memorable moments.

The lagoon is in Punta Cana, specifically in the south, where you can stay in luxurious resorts and villas. To access the lagoon, you will need to go to Scape Park Cap Cana, and after passing through a beautiful trail with plenty of fauna and flora, you will reach the lagoon in less than 10 minutes.

A couple of things worth noting is that the deepest point of these blue waters is 37 meters.

So many beautiful places, they all look amazing. Great post.

Interesting to see that the Dominican Republic isn’t just a few beaches lined with all-inclusive beach resorts! There is some nature and culture to be seen there. Thanks for sharing that!

Five Natural Attractions in the Dominican Republic

By waitingforrain28

Punta Cana seems to be where lots of people end up when they visit the Dominican Republic. After living in the DR for a couple months, I came to realize that this city is more like a theme park than a real part of the country. So, whether or not you are staying in Punta Cana for your tropical get-away, please be sure to consider these amazing natural attractions in the Dominican Republic.

Cueva Fun Fun

natural attractions in the Dominican Republic

The exit of Cueva Fun Fun (c) ABR 2016

Ok, Cueva Fun Fun is an activity that you can do from Punta Cana, but it isn’t in Punta Cana. The only way to visit this cavern is via a guided trip. But that’s fine because it takes a horse ride, a hike, and a rappel to get into the cave. That’s just the beginning of the adventure, because once you are down there you also have to wade through cold, subterranean water. Whether you are looking for an adventure, or you want to know more about the many jewels that the Dominican Republic has to offer, Cueva Fun Fun is a great place to start.

I have seen some seriously amazing caves in the Caribbean (Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico), and this was one of the coolest. They will pick you up from Punta Cana, so its a great trip for people staying in the Dominican Republic’s biggest tourism hub. That being said,  this trip is best suited for people that are comfortable with horses, heights, and swimming in the dark.

Pico Duarte

natural attractions in the Dominican Republic

A view from the side of Pico Duarte (c) ABR 2016

I have an entire series about my experience attempting the summit of the Dominican Republic’s highest mountain, so be sure to read about the whole adventure . Pico Duarte is a Caribbean place that’s unlike anything you have ever seen. The base of the mountain is draped in those tropical forests that we’ve all come to expect from the islands of the Caribbean.

As you struggle your way up the steep trail, you will make your way into a deciduous forest type that seems so ubiquitous to higher regions. The transition between the two is unbelievably beautiful, and the vistas from Pico Duarte are jaw-dropping. If you love hiking, Pico Duarte might be your favorite of the natural attractions in the Dominican Republic. You can even make the trip a bit cheaper by carefully driving to the base and hiring a local guide from one of the small towns at the base.

Bayahibe and Soana Island

natural attractions in the Dominican Republic

The beautiful waters of Soana Island (c) ABR 2016

Bayahibe, the tiny town near the larger village of Dominicus, is my favorite town on the whole island. It is small, safe, and so so beautiful.  I loved the peaceful atmosphere and amazingly fresh foods of this small town. Bayahibe is also home to a very cool non-profit called FUNDAMAR which works with local people to study and protect the marine mammals. Their hotel association is active in its efforts to make this area an ecotourism and sustainable tourism hub. In terms of activities, there is no end to the things you can do.

A day trip to Soana island will lead you to shallow waters with brilliant orange starfish, and a small island with a colorful village and grassroots effort to protect nesting marine turtles. There is also Padre Nuestro and the Parque Nacional de Este where you can explore some caves and even swim in one (although the trail markers in Parque Nacional de Este are non-existent, so be careful). Bayahibe is a haven for sustainable travelers and lovers of the outdoors.

Samana and Los Haitises National Park

natural attractions in the Dominican Republic

Samana Village and the surrounding forest (c) ABR 2016

Samana is the village to visit if you want to go whale watching, although this is changing. Even if you get to the Dominican Republic after whale watching activities move closer to Punta Cana, this town and the peninsula for which it is named is a must-visit. The village itself is quite lovely, and a long bridge out into the ocean. There are, however, lots of tourist hawkers here, so it can be a bit chaotic.

El Salto de Limon is nearby, and while it is threatened by climate change, this waterfall is too beautiful to miss. Besides whales, beaches, and beautiful towns, Samana is an access point for the beautiful Los Haitises National Park. Here in the otherworldy karst landscape, you can explore caves, grand mangrove forests and more with the help of a guide. There is really no end to the natural attractions in Dominican Republic’s northern peninsula.

natural attractions in the Dominican Republic

A picture from Dominican Republic Has It All (click the image to visit their website!) because I didn’t have a waterproof camera. :/

I went to the 27 Charcos without really knowing what it was, although I knew there were waterfalls involved and my friends assured me that it was very enjoyable. It turned out to be one of the highlights of my time in the Dominican Republic. I do wish I had known a bit more about what this was before I went. The 27 Charcos tour will take you down a beautiful gorge with bright blue water and a string of waterfalls that you jump and slide down.

This definitely is not a tour for people with a fear of heights or water. Bring shoes that you are comfortable hiking in and swimming in. Our guide rushed us through the tour, unfortunately, and I would suggest that you take your time on the way down. Also, bring a waterproof camera or rent one, because this place is extremely beautiful, and I have never seen another place quite like it.

If you are planning a trip to the Dominican Republic (or are just interested in learning more about the country) be sure to look through our country guide !

Very good article, don’t know if you are interested in knowing that the island is named Saona and not Soana. I am planning a trip there and this has been helpful. Thanks

20 Best Things to Do in the Dominican Republic

natural tourist attractions in dominican republic

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

One of the most geographically diverse countries in the Caribbean and the second largest in size, the Dominican Republic boasts an incredible range of scenery. Beyond its renowned beaches and over a thousand miles of coastline, you’ll find mountain ranges, offshore islands, lakes and waterfalls, offering plenty to do outdoors. As diverse as the landscape are the culture and history — from the Taino days to the Spanish colonial years with the arrival of enslaved Africans, and the influx of immigrants from Europe, Asia, the U.S., and the Middle East. These influences are reflected today in the people, the cuisine and the music. It's this incredible range in nature and culture is what makes the Dominican Republic one of the most interesting destinations to visit in the Caribbean.

Hit the Beaches

Millions of visitors flock to Punta Cana every year for some of the Dominican Republic’s longest white sand beaches, but there are other spectacular and less crowded coastlines to explore. Venture northeast to remote Las Terrenas and Las Galeras on the Samaná Peninsula for long palm-lined golden and white sands. If you’re into water sports, head to Puerto Plata’s surf-rich coastline and beach hop your way from Playa Dorada to Cabarete and Monte Cristi. Wherever you end up, you’re sure to find beachfront restaurants with fresh catch (in season), plenty of rum, and music.

Tour the Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo

TripSavvy / Lara D'agostino

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990, Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial is recognized as the first European city built in the “New World,” serving as a model for the rest of the Americas. Today it’s a charming, culture-packed and lively neighborhood that’s a favorite of visitors and locals. Tour a number of important museums and colonial buildings, including the first fortress of the Americas, the first cathedral, the ruins of the first hospital, the first convent and the first university. Stroll the pedestrian Calle El Conde, lined with shops, outdoor sidewalk art, restaurants and cafes. Enjoy the outdoor parks and plazas, and dine under the stars at Pat’e Palo or Pura Tasca on Plaza España.

Taste Dominican Cuisine

Beyond the national dish – la bandera dominicana (a plate of rice and beans with stewed chicken and a side salad) – there are local specialties you should sample. Try mangú, a deliciously seasoned mound of mashed green plantains topped with sautéed red onions, for breakfast or sancocho, a hearty stew combining various meats and roots vegetables, served with a side of white rice and avocado slices. Desserts and salty snacks are popular as well, from yucca empanadas to coconut sweets.

In Santo Domingo, Villar Hermanos and Meson D’Bari are among the best Dominican restaurants , but you’ll also find local dishes in comedores or small local restaurants around the country.

Visit the Museums

 TripSavvy / Lara D'agostino

The country's museums shed an important light on the country’s fascinating history. Start in the Colonial City – tour the Alcazar de Colon, the former home of Diego Columbus turned museum, as well as the Museo de las Casas Reales. Continue to the Museo del Hombre Dominicano, the most comprehensive in the country, covers various eras starting with the origin of Dominicans to its present day culture and society. In Altos de Chavón, the Museo Arqueologico Regional Altos de Chavón boasts one of the most comprehensive collections of Taino artifacts and history.

Dance to Merengue and Bachata

Dance and music are an intrinsic part of Dominican culture. You can practice your merengue and bachata dance skills anywhere in the country, whether on the beach or at your resort’s nightclub, in local bars and at concerts. Live performances are also popular and an important part of the culture. In Santo Domingo, head to Jet Set Club for weekly concerts on Monday nights. In Puerto Plata, shows are held regularly at the Puerto Plata Amphitheatre.

Take the Cacao Trail

The Dominican Republic ranks among the top three largest exporters of cacao in the world. For a full experience of a cacao plantation and the bean to bar process, sign up for the Sendero del Cacao or the Cacao Trail Tour. Located in the province of San Francisco de Macorís, just over an hour north of Santo Domingo, you’ll experience a fully operating, family-owned cacao farm – you’ll hike the plantation, taste raw cacao, and tour the chocolate making facilities where you’ll make your own bar.

Catch a Baseball Game

The Dominican Republic counts the highest contribution of baseball players to US Major League Baseball. The passion for “play,” as it’s locally called, is just as strong at home. The Dominican Baseball League runs an annual baseball tournament from mid-October through January, and you can catch the games at any of the professional baseball stadiums around the country. Combined with on site music and food, you’ll get a solid glimpse of the locals’ passion and natural talent for baseball.

Visit the Offshore Islands

As if the mainland didn’t have enough beaches, the Dominican Republic counts a handful of offshore islands with spectacular white sand beaches. The most visited is Saona Island – part of the Cotubanamá National Park – for its breathtaking coastline and Caribbean turquoise pools. Off the coast of Samaná, Cayo Levantado’s beach is a perfect daytime escape, with restaurants on site. Off the coast of Puerto Plata, Cayo Arena is the tiniest offshore caye, its surrounding waters teeming with tropical fish.

Ride to Cable Car in Puerto Plata

One of the most unique activities in the Dominican Republic is Puerto Plata’s cable car ride or Teleférico , the only one operating in the Caribbean. It takes you soaring over 2,600 feet above Puerto Plata’s gorgeous Atlantic Ocean and hilly green landscape, from the city towards Mount Isabel. Once you reach the top, you’ll get off the cable car and see a giant Christ of the Redeemer Statue, similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro. After a few selfies, continue hiking towards the back of the statue, where you’ll find beautiful botanical gardens. Stroll at your leisure, and cool off afterwards at the on site cafe.

Experience Dominican Carnival

Carnival is a major part of Dominican culture. Based on folklore characters and tales, as well as syncretic religions, it’s an excellent time to glimpse the country’s diversity. Every Sunday during the month of February, you can experience a carnival parade in major towns and cities around the country. The most popular and widely attended parades take place in La Vega, Santiago and Puerto Plata. Carnival season closes with a final national parade on the first Sunday in March, on Santo Domingo’s seafront boulevard.

Conquer the 27 Damajagua Falls

Venture inland for adrenaline-pumping adventure at the Dominican Republic's most spectacular waterfalls: the 27 Charcos de Damajagua , in Puerto Plata. Its cascades and natural pools tumble down a series of canyons. You’ll hike, slide your way down, jump, and wade through beautiful azure and turquoise waters gushing over and around you.

Hike Pico Duarte, the Caribbean’s Highest Peak

siri bl [CC BY 2.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)]

Tucked in the heart of the country, Pico Duarte – part of the Jose Armando Bermudez National Park – is the tallest peak in the Caribbean, standing at 10,105 feet. The two- to three-day expedition will have you camping under the stars as you make your way to the summit at sunrise. Opt for Jarabacoa as your jump off point and relax in this cool mountain town before and after your adventure.

Go Humpback Whale Watching in the Bay of Samaná

Every year from mid-January through March, thousands of humpback whales make their way to the warm waters of the Bay of Samaná to mate and birth. Hop on a two-hour whale watching tour with marine biologist Kim Bed all’s Whale Samana – if you’re lucky, you’ll spot calves as well – after which you’ll head over to Cayo Levantado for lunch and an afternoon on the beach.

Hang Out at the Parks

Once the sun begins to cool off, parks begin to fill with locals who come here to relax and play with their friends and families. You’ll find a central park in almost every town you visit, whether beachside or inland. In Santo Domingo, visit the iconic Parque Colon, in the heart of the Colonial Zone, for a family-friendly atmosphere as well as surrounding restaurants. Nearby, Parque Duarte is a favorite of the LGBT community. In Puerto Plata, the Parque Central is one of the most attractive with its surrounding Victorian architecture.

Spot Crocodiles at Lake Enriquillo

Located in the remote southwest, Lake Enriquillo lies 60 feet below sea level, and is the largest lake in the Caribbean region. Part saline, part fresh water, its remarkable features attract the only population of American crocodiles in the DR. Hop on a boat tour led by a park ranger, and you’ll spot crocs of all sizes lurking beneath. On shore, you can’t miss seeing iguanas freely roaming the grounds.

Shop for Local Souvenirs

The Dominican Republic offers plenty of opportunities to shop items that are sourced and created locally. If you’re into precious stones, opt for larimar or amber jewelry pieces. Coffee, chocolate, and rum lovers will also find their bliss with homegrown varieties. Arts and crafts range from wood-carved decorations to oil paintings and the Dominican “faceless” dolls.

Get Social at the Colmado

The Dominican “colmado” is a corner mom and pop grocery store that doubles as a neighborhood bar. The colmado is affordable and ubiquitous in the country –you can find one on nearly every other corner, from the city to the smallest village. Order una fria or an ice-cold beer at the counter and grab a chair or two to enjoy outdoors while listening to music.

Savor the Coffee Culture

With coffee plantations around the country’s mountainous regions, it’s not hard to understand why coffee plays such an important part in Dominican culture. Enjoy a cafecito during the day, preferably while sitting outdoors and catching up with friends. If you’re not a coffee drinker, get a hot chocolate or a batida – a fresh fruit “milkshake” or smoothie. Sip, mingle and enjoy the fresh air.

Sample Rum and Cigars

The Dominican Republic is a top producer of rum and one of the largest exporters of premium cigars to the United States. Take a tour of La Aurora Cigar Factory in Santiago, where you’ll learn about the entire cigar making process. There are also cigar and rum bars around the country.

Visit Bahia de Las Aguilas

Lying on the southwest edge of the country, near the border with Haiti, this undeveloped and protected beach boasts five long miles of brilliant white sand and iridescent turquoise waters. The best way to enjoy it is on a boat cruise of the surrounding Bay of Eagles.

05 Apr The Best Natural Landscapes in the Dominican Republic

The best natural landscapes in the dominican republic.

The Dominican Republic is nature in its purest form, which includes its incredible white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, but also the lush greenery that fills up the country.

If you want to discover the most incredible landscapes, here is a small summary of what you can see on your next holiday:

The Three Eyes National Park

This natural paradise is located only 8 kilometres from Santo Domingo. It was discovered in 1916, although only 40 years ago it was declared a protected area.

Here you can find some underground caverns used by the Tainos , quite possibly for rituals. The park gets its name from three large freshwater lagoons found within these caverns. The lakes have a characteristic turquoise blue colour and an oval shape reminiscent of eyes. Hence, the area is called the Three Eyes National Park .

Although these lakes are very tempting, you should know that swimming in them has been banned for many years to conserve the biodiversity that is found here. Keep this in mind because swimming in them can result in significant fines.

The best time to come to this park is at dawn, since this time of day lights up the caves in their entirety for just a few minutes.

Cave of Wonders National Park

This park is located two hours and 15 minutes from Santo Domingo and is famous for the caves that were discovered there. The Cave of Wonders, which gives the park its name, is a real treasure. A natural gem that you shouldn’t miss if you want to get to know one of the best kept secrets of the Dominican Republic.

In this cave you will find an incredible architecture of stalactites and stalagmites in the so-called pictographic gallery. In this area, an artificial lake has been created in which the ceiling of the cave is reflected so that you can see these incredible geological formations in detail.

But if you find that surprising, you should know that the cave is also hiding another secret: a true Taino art gallery . The cave walls are decorated with paintings that recreate funeral rituals and other scenes from everyday life. It’s surprising to think that the Tainos made these paintings so many centuries ago and they have been preserved so well that we can still enjoy them today.

If you want to learn more about the Cave of Wonders, click here .

Del Este National Park

This park is located in the La Romana region and is one of the most spectacular areas in the Dominican Republic. You may have heard of Saona Island , which is located within the Del Este National Park.

In this area there are more than 500 species of flowers and 300 species of birds, meaning it has an incredibly rich biodiversity.

The famous Saona Island is a haven of peace for those who come here to enjoy it. And it is also a quiet place for many species who call it home, such as turtles. Did you know that there is a turtle sanctuary here? It is dedicated to taking care of the four endemic turtle species found here and preventing them from going extinct.

In addition, the Del Este National Park also has caves, such as those of Guaraguao, with prehistoric art inside. Wherever you look in this area, you’ll find a landscape that will be etched in your mind forever.

Coral reefs

In the Dominican Republic there are incredible landscapes even under the water. If you decide to go snorkelling, you’ll see that just a few metres below the surface are endless colours and unimaginable marine life.

The waters in Punta Cana have one of the most important coral reefs. If you dare to dive in, you’ll be able to see and admire all of its beauty up close.

Did you know that coral reefs are home to 25% of the sea’s biodiversity? They are currently in danger due to human activities, as our actions are raising the temperature of the sea. Therefore, if you decide to go snorkelling, you must be very careful and follow the recommendations given by the instructors so that you can enjoy them while still being sure to protect them.

Playa Bávaro

One of the most beautiful landscapes in the Dominican Republic is Playa Bávaro. Its coconut trees and the contrast of the colour of the sand with the turquoise blue of the sea create an incredible memory of a holiday in paradise.

A wonderful natural landscape, which becomes even more beautiful when the light breeze gently moves the leaves of the coconut trees.

No matter what area you decide to visit, the Dominican Republic contains landscapes that you’ll be pressed to be found in other parts of the world.

Top things to do in the Dominican Republic from casinos to whale watching

Who wouldn’t want to spend a week in the Dominican Republic  lying on the sand with a rum-soaked drink in their hand?

After all, the crystalline waters and skin-tingling sun are enough to lull even the most stressed traveler into a state of peaceful bliss. While this Caribbean island has more than enough picturesque shores to fill any beach bingo card, the DR is also filled with an array of adventurous activities across the country’s 31 provinces.

Whether it’s diving beneath the ocean waves for a face-to-face experience with colorful fish, hiking to a waterfall and jumping into a cavernous pool, or getting your fill of traditional regional dishes like sancocho  (beef stew) and mangu (mashed plantains), here are 10 can’t-miss experiences in the Dominican Republic.

Groups of people relax at tables, while others stroll on the cobble stone streets of Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo, DR.

Take a stroll around Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial

The capital of the Dominican Republic,  Santo Domingo is where the country’s industrial, financial and retail businesses cluster. Yet within this bustling modern city lie 11 blocks of charming cobblestone streets and stone archways called the Zona Colonial .

The area dates back to Christopher Columbus’ arrival on the island in 1492; several buildings were first constructed in the 1500s, including the Ozama Fortress , the Primada Cathedral and the Casa Colón – the first castle residence in the Americas.

“La Zona” is also a favorite among locals thanks to its busy parks, vibrant cafe scene, live music venues and restaurants serving Dominican staples like mangu , fried fish and empanadas.

Watch the high rollers in Punta Cana

Along with some of the most scenic beaches in the country, Punta Cana also plays host to the island’s biggest hotels and all-inclusive resorts. The scene is touristy to be sure – but if you’re looking to live the life of a high roller for a few hours (or just watch a few in action), the casinos here are some of the best you’ll find in the Caribbean.

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino has one of the biggest (and flashiest) gaming floors in the area, with over 500 slots and 28 game tables. Meanwhile, the casino at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace keeps the lights running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Best places to visit in the Dominican Republic

A man swimming in the bright blue waters of the pool by the Saltos de la Damajagua

Swim the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua

Tucked into the hilly terrain of the Dominican Republic’s Northern Corridor mountain range, the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua offer pristine pools formed by limestone and pressure from relentless torrents of water. With the help of a guide, you’ll trek through some dense forest to find your way,  with the reward a day spent jumping from the falls (up to 26ft/8m) into the cool water below, where you can swim through smooth canyons before climbing a series of ladders and ropes to do it all over again.

See whales off the coast of Samaná Bay

The best time to head to Samaná Bay is between the months of December and March, when thousands of humpback whales descend upon the eastern side of the island to mate and give birth in the warm waters. Catch a tour with a marine biologist from the neighboring city of Samaná to spend the day contemplating the lives of these large aquatic mammals.

The areas surrounding Samaná contain sleepy, laid-back townships that lend themselves more to cozy European cafe culture than the splashy, towering resorts in Punta Cana. After your day on the water, linger a while.

Go kiteboarding in Cabarete

A day trip from Puerto Plata, Cabarete is a bustling beach town with some of the spiciest waves and gustiest winds on the island. This makes it a hotbed for adrenaline junkies looking to catch some air while kiteboarding or windsurfing. Cabarete is also a popular spot with surfers, who head to the town’s main strip at the end of the day for some Dominican food at one of the local restaurants and bars like Bliss , Gordito’s Fresh Mex or La Casita de Papi .

Shop for souvenirs in a 16th-century-style village

Evoking a 16th-century Italian-Spanish village,  Altos de Chavon  in La Romana looks authentic enough to be...the set of a movie. Indeed, in 1976 a Hollywood producer designed the square to look just like a medieval European town using stone from a nearby blasted mountain. A scene from the movie Apocalypse Now was filmed here.

Spend the day exploring the church, museum and 5000-seat amphitheater that make up the village while stopping into some of the artisan shops for locally made souvenirs.

A cable car tours above a forest area in Puerto Plata

Take a cable car up to Pico Isabel de Torres

Since it’s a 2625ft trip (800m) to the top of Pico Isabel de Torres, thank goodness you’ll have a teleférico (cable car) to help get you up there. The flat-topped mountain offers unobstructed views of the northern region of the Dominican Republic. Just be sure to head up early, as clouds tend to form around the mountain as the day wears on.

After taking in the views, a nearby botanical garden invites a leisurely afternoon stroll. Don’t forget to catch a glimpse of the monumental Christ the Redeemer statue before you go.

Ride an ATV through jungle terrain

Water sports get a lot of the main billing in the Dominican Republic, and with good reason. That’s no reason not to seek out land adventures here as well – such as the ATV and buggy tours offered outside of Punta Cana, for example.

Several tour operators in the area organize excursions (you can expect to spend anywhere from $50 to $120 for the experience) that let you rip through lush jungle terrain and bumpy slopes for a hair-raising several hours.

Try to keep an eye out for some of the wildlife that inhabits the area – though if you’re in it mostly for the adrenaline rush, the buggies won’t disappoint.

The 12 best beaches in the Dominican Republic

A palm tree bends and casts a shadow on a sparsely peopled beach in Saona Island, Dominican Republic

Snorkel around Saona Island

While Saona Island is a nationally protected park, much of the coral around the area has sadly been damaged by boats and tourists.

Still, the powdery white sand, postcard-perfect palms and crystal clear waters here remain dreamy, making it easy for novice snorkelers to get a glimpse of the abundant marine life below. A sandbank near the shore is a popular spot to post up for a rum cocktail, served up by local Dominicans wading through the shallow waters.

Swing off the side of a mountain

Depending on your viewing angle, the swings on the side of Montaña Redonda might give you pause. After all, there appears to be a considerable drop to the lush valleys, lakes and streams below. But that’s only an illusion: there’s soft grass right below your feet should you take a tumble.

Situated between Punta Cana and Miches, this coastal mountain offers 360-degree views of the eastern part of the island. It’s a 40-minute walk up to the top (you can also opt to catch a ride with one of the tour buses or jeeps, for a fee) – and once you’re there, the aforementioned swings, hammocks and zip lines make for some of the best photo ops in the country.

Nature in the Dominican Republic – what’s worth going to see

The Dominican Republic may not have the military might to get it veto powers, but it is the leader of natural beauty here on mother Earth. No country, big or small, can boast of being so star-studded with rich, natural and cultural scenes like the Dominican Republic can. It is an aesthetic master-piece, and Dominican nature heavily propagates its beauty with:

  • Lush and green plant matter,
  • Beautifully aged trees that date back hundreds of years,
  • Harmonic streams, adventurous waterfalls,
  • Flowery ponds with musically mystical birds and butterflies,
  • Scores of vast nature parks

To source up the photophobic nature of its flourishing natural eco-systems, the Dominican Republic also bears in her mountains and virgin beaches.

  • What is worth visiting in the DR?

The one single quality of the Dominican Republic that comes near to equaling the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic in tourist attraction is the impeccable reputation that its hospitality staff enjoys. Many people confess to have gone to beautiful parks like Parque Los Haitises just to experience how well the tour guides and rangers explain things.

Their personnel are refined and resourceful: an epitome of utterly well thought out culture, policy and legislation. A big majority of people who visit Parque Los Haitises speak of it fondly and with longing desire. They often claim that the home cooked food made their entire trip worthwhile. Some find it hard to decide whether it is the horse rides they loved more or the Zip N Splash adventures.

The diversity of the Dominican nature also plays a big role in attracting tourists from all over the world. The Dominican Republic is home to over 300 bird species and 5,600 plant species. The people there are big fans of nature as well. And there is a reason for it. Just look and imagine how stunning the Dominican nature is with its:

The coastal people are even friendlier and very welcoming. They come across so many foreigners that most pick up different languages, accents and even demeanor. They care about the coastal nature eco-system and are very aware of your potential needs. The beauty of the Dominican Republic beaches is so enigmatic and saturated that it even transferred to the locals. The scenic and captivating virgin beaches, especially in Barahora province, are totally worth high quality photography and videography.

  • Discover the Dominican nature

Try visiting the prettiest places of Dominican nature if you would like to experience the cap of all the above attractions. The trip would really make you younger than you look and feel. It would be pure therapy and you would probably unlock your Chakra. It would be very worth it to go on a safari-open drive out into nature with a few jolly good and fun safari guards. There are numerous other National Parks which also present and serve beauty, grace and hospitality. They are specifically reserved to allow people to get in touch with Mothernature. You should see it, you should experience it, and you should definitely enjoy it. Visit the Dominican Republic.

15 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Puerto Plata

Written by Lana Law and Michael Law Updated Dec 25, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Authors Michael and Lana Law spend several months each year near Puerto Plata, in the town of Cabarete. They love the beaches, dining, and vibrant culture of the Dominican Republic.

Puerto Plata is a welcoming city with beautiful architecture, historical sites, museums, quirky streets designed with tourists in mind, and plenty of things to do for adventurous travelers.

Downtown Puerto Plata

Set on the oceanfront, Puerto Plata has stunning sections of beach right in the heart of the city. Just outside the city are long sections of golden-sand beaches with low-rise resorts catering to those looking for easy vacation escapes.

Puerto Plata sits on the northern shores of the Dominican Republic's Amber Coast, and vacationers from around the globe flock here to enjoy the all-inclusive beach resorts that line the sand. As a holiday destination, Puerto Plata operates at a much slower and calmer pace than the Dominican Republic's other major resort area, Punta Cana.

Although the beaches are the main attraction, it's worth dragging yourself away from the sun and sand for a day of sightseeing. First and foremost, head into Puerto Plata's colorful city center. Stroll along Pink Street and Umbrella Street, wander around Fort San Felipe for fantastic views, and then relax on a patio at a street-side restaurant.

Learn more about the best places to visit with our list of the top tourist attractions and things to do in Puerto Plata.

Playa Dorada

Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata's primary hub of tourist activity, is the stretch of golden-sand beach where you will find most of the area's all-inclusive resorts and all the bustle that accompanies them. Lounge chairs and cabanas full of sunbathers line the ocean here, on one of the best beaches in the Dominican Republic .

The warm waters are ideal for swimming, as well as water sports, and there are several rental shops where you can rent equipment. Those not staying at the resorts, can find more beaches closer to the center of town located along the three-kilometer Malecón , a lovely scenic oceanside road. The Malecón starts at Long Beach and proceeds northwest past Costa Rica Beach and then Acapulco Beach, and has several sections of walkable boardwalk.

Damajagua Waterfalls

Other than the beach, Damajagua Waterfalls are the top natural attraction in the Puerto Plata area, and visiting them can be an adventure for nature lovers. Equipped with helmets and lifejackets, you walk up to the top of a series of waterfalls and make your way downstream by jumping, swimming, and sliding , often via stone waterslides that were carved by the rushing water.

Among the most exciting are the 20-foot drop at la Tinajita and the twisty Corkscrew falls, neither of which are for the faint of heart. Other highlights include the pool at Jaiba, named for the freshwater crabs that live in the rocks here and a bizarre pool with two layers of water - cold on the top and warm on the bottom. The site also has a visitor center and restaurant.

A great way to experience this popular natural attraction is on an organized tour of the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua from Puerto Plata, which includes round-trip transportation, lunch, safety equipment, and a knowledgeable guide. Tourists have the option to stop and relax around halfway up, or to keep hiking to the top waterfall for a full thrill ride down nature's water park.

Parque Central in downtown Puerto Plata

Parque Central, in the heart of downtown Puerto Plata, is a good starting pointing for touring the city. From here, it's an easy (and short) walk to many of the key sights in the city, including Umbrella Street, Paseo de Doña Blanca (Pink Street), and the Amber Museum.

A couple of large trees provide much-needed shade and are a good place to sip on a cool drink and escape the sun.

Located nearby is the Casa Museo General Gregorio Luperón , dedicated to the life and times of the nation's 20 th president. Exhibits include photos and possessions, as well as authentic representations of late 19 th -century life.

Address: Parque Central, Calle Separación, Puerto Plata

Pink Street, Puerto Plata

Paseo de Dona Blanca is more commonly known by tourists as Pink Street. It's literally a pink street. The walkway, the buildings, the plant boxes, the window frames — it's all pink. And when you walk through here, you too will look pink as the light reflects the color from every angle.

It's a bizarre sort of place that makes for some of the most unusual photos you'll take on your entire trip to Puerto Plata. The street is not long, so it only takes a few minutes to walk from end to end, but you'll likely find you spend more time here than you anticipated, angling for that perfect pink photo.

A couple of decent restaurants are located just off Paseo de Dona Blanca, and their patios make for ideal perches to watch the nonstop parade of people walking by.

Umbrella Street in downtown Puerto Plata

The Umbrella Street phenomenon has reached Puerto Plata now. From its humble beginnings in the Portuguese town of Agueda in 2012, these streets have become a trend around the world, and Puerto Plata is no exception.

Umbrella Street is technically San Felipe Street , but even the tourist maps indicate it as Umbrella Street. This pedestrian-only street is a delightful spot and definitely a must-see.

As the name indicates, colorful umbrellas are strung from the rooftops and provide a beautiful contrast to the usually cobalt blue skies above. Along the way are all kinds of small retail stores, ice-cream sellers, and souvenir shops.

View from Fort San Felipe

Fort San Felipe (Fuerte San Felipe) is Puerto Plata's only remaining colonial structure and one of the first European forts constructed in the Americas. It offers a fabulous view over Puerto Plata, the mountains in behind, and the cruise ships if they are docked on the day you visit.

The Fort was built between 1564 and 1577 to defend against colonists from other European countries, as well as pirates looking for silver and gold.

Fort San Felipe

Its primary use throughout the centuries has been as a prison, most notoriously as a prison for political dissidents during Trujillo's dictatorship. Inside its eight-foot-thick walls, you'll find some interesting wartime historical artifacts as well as a small museum.

Inside the walls, the fort is ringed by a moat and outlined in lights at night. The park below the fort is an ideal spot to view the sunset; there are excellent views from the fort as well.

The Malecon near Fort San Felipe

Puerto Plata has done a fine job of preserving its wonderful waterfront areas, and no place is this more evident than The Malecon. This three-kilometer paved pathway winds its way along the rugged coastline offering unparalleled views out over the Atlantic Ocean.

The pathway starts at the San Felipe Fortress and runs under tall palm trees before ending at Long Beach. Along the way, you'll pass various public art installations (see if you can spot Neptune on his rock), dramatic vista points, and many seaside restaurants.

You'll share The Malecon with a diverse set of locals out walking, jogging, pushing strollers, or just sitting on benches catching up on the local gossip.

Mount Isabel de Torres Cable Car

Looming over Puerto Plata, the 2,600-foot Mount Isabel de Torres (also known as Pico Isabella de Torres ) provides stunning panoramic views of the city, beach, and Atlantic Ocean. Most tourists opt to ride up the mountain via cable car (the only one in the Caribbean), enjoying the additional views and airborne photo-ops, but you can also hike to the top.

The summit is home to a statue of Christ the Redeemer , which watches over the city below, reminiscent of the iconic attraction in Río de Janeiro. At his feet, vendors gather to form a busy shopping plaza, where you can find refreshments and souvenirs like amber jewelry and handmade crafts, and there is a restaurant as well.

A short walk brings you to the botanical gardens, where local flowers and greenery will provide respite from the bustle.

It's best to ride the cable car in the morning, when the skies are generally clearest. As the heat of the day builds, clouds frequently form in the afternoon, obscuring the view.

Amber Museum of Puerto Plata

The amber mined in and around Puerto Plata is known for being some of the oldest and clearest, and many of the most remarkable specimens can be found at the Amber Museum of Puerto Plata. Amber, although not an actual stone, is the Dominican Republic's designated national gemstone.

In addition to its popularity in jewelry, many are interested in amber for what it holds inside. Many of the specimens in the museum contain plants, insects, and other small creatures that were captured by the sticky sap and frozen in time, fossilized. The most impressive of the museum's pieces contains a huge lizard — nearly 16 inches long — encased and perfectly preserved.

You can find a wide variety of amber jewelry and specimens at the museum's gift shop, as well as information on tours of local mines.

Address: 61 Duarte Street, Playa Dorada

Castillo Mundo King

For an experience so wacky and so off the wall you'll never be able to explain to anyone who hasn't visited, stop by the Castillo Mundo King in Sosúa. Stepping into this bizarre home is like stepping into the mind of a creative madman.

Off-the-wall architecture, spaceships, halls that lead nowhere, a dungeon, incredible Haitian art that includes voodoo-style sculptures and colorful paintings on almost every wall, and seemingly endless staircases are enough to keep you slightly confused, bewildered, and entertained. The five-story "home" was the passion of one man, Rolf Schultz, who started it in 1990 and was still working on it when he died in 2018.

Be sure to walk right up to the very top. The views in all directions, also a space ship landing pad apparently, are incredible.

Today it's open to the public in a casual sort of way, just walk right in, and eventually someone will ask you for around 500 DOP (cash only).

Location: Camino del Llibre, Sosúa

Dominican squirrel monkey

Ziplining through "Monkey Jungle" is an exciting activity for thrill-seekers and nature lovers. Named for the forest's lively population of squirrel monkeys, this section of jungle sits at the edge of El Choco National Park near Cabarete , and you can visit it on a guided zipline adventure from Puerto Plata .

This five- to six-hour tour includes transportation to the park, where you will find two suspension bridges and seven ziplines, providing an exciting perspective of the tropical forest below.

In addition to the adventure through the treetops, tourists will explore Monkey Jungle with a professional naturalist while interacting and feeding the friendly primates and learning about the ecosystem and local plants and animals.

Ocean World Adventure Park

Ocean World Adventure Park , three miles from Puerto Plata, is a popular attraction for families and couples because of its interactive marine life experiences .

Admission includes use of the water park attractions including pools and waterslides; access to the Tropical Reef Aquarium, where you can snorkel; and educational animal shows, which include dolphins, sea lions, sharks, and tropical birds.

You also have the opportunity to purchase special access programs, which include sea lion encounters, petting stingrays, swimming with the sharks, and numerous ways to interact with the dolphins, from petting and feeding to swimming and even spending a full day with the trainers helping to care for the animals.

Address: Calle Principal #3, Confresi, Puerto Plata

Cabarete

Rimmed by seemingly endless stretches of soft-sand beaches, Cabarete is a hotspot for the young, hip, and physically fit, as well as adventurous retirees. Restaurants line the top of the main Cabarete Beach , where you can dine on the sand or simply kick back and relax. In behind, along the main road are shops and other retail.

With warm waters and consistent winds, the area here is considered one of the best in the world for kiteboarding . Cabarete's famous Kite Beach is a good location for beginners wanting to learn the sport and experts looking for some fun. ATV Adventure in the Dominican Republic

Miles of coastline trails make the region surrounding Puerto Plata an excellent place to go off-roading while enjoying the beautiful views. A great day activity, the Amber Cove & Taino Bay Shore Excursion: 2 person Buggy Tour from Puerto Plata. gives tourists the chance to drive their own ATV while being led by a local guide through the rural trails.

This is a popular thing to do for couples, with plenty of stops along the way for photo-ops, as well as breaks to take a dip in the ocean at Playa Bergatin.

Playa Alicia in Sosúa

Sosúa, approximately 15 miles east of Puerto Plata, is known for its beautiful stretch of sheltered beach and calm water. The area is home to many guesthouses, villas, hotels, and cafés.

The crescent-shaped Sosúa Beach is lined with shady trees, and buzzes with vendors, and this is one of the region's best places for SCUBA diving and snorkeling. If you are visiting in the winter, you may also be able to spot migrating whales in the bay.

While visiting Sosúa, be sure to stop in to Casa De Arte in the center of town, where you will find exhibits of work by local artists including paintings, drawings, jewelry, and sculpture. The Casa de Arte also functions as a school that teaches local teens and children a variety of visual and performing arts, and it also hosts cultural events.

We recommend these resorts around Puerto Plata for the best experience, regardless of your budget:
