Pay homage to evolution with a stay on Darwin’s favorite archipelago, the Galapagos. The Pikaia Lodge was “designed for the environmentally conscious, physically active and adventurous traveler,” and is centrally located to allow easy access to all of the islands.

Guests can dine at the lodge’s restaurant on the edge of a crater or wander around the facilities and come face-to-face with a giant tortoise. A week's stay in the lodge’s pool suite starts at $10,205 per person.

North Island in Seychelles

Vacation like George and Amal Clooney at this private island resort. There are only 11 villas, ensuring that it’s possible to get far, far away from the rest of the world. The Villa North Island is the most exclusive at the resort, available at about $11,000 per night. Within the villa’s 8,000 square feet there’s a series of wooden decks, a coconut grove, and even a private entrance to a secluded beach. And for what it’s worth: Rumor has it that Will and Kate honeymooned here, too.

The Post House at Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, California

The wealthy clientele who stay at the Post Ranch Inn generally do so to escape the rest of the world while enjoying views of the Pacific Ocean. The luxury resort’s most expensive accommodation takes these wishes up to the next level, with an added dash of coziness. Guests at the Post House have unparalleled views of the ocean, whether that’s through the floor-to-ceiling windows from their beds or across the horizon from their private jacuzzis. The room is available for $4,350 per night.

Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge in Rwanda

The newly opened Bisate Lodge sits directly next to Rwanda’s Volcano National Park. From vacationing on a private sandbank in the Maldives to glamping above sea level in Canada...

When you think of the world’s most lavish experiences, it’s no doubt that mega yachts, private transfers and traditional decadence immediately come to mind—but we'd argue that true luxury is instead defined by the exclusive access to some of the world’s most prized gems. The ultimate in luxury entails experiences so transformative that you cannot help but to leave them a changed person. From the far flung, remote Himalayas to the Rococo splendor of Paris, true luxury takes you to new heights, granting unheard-of insight into new perspectives, cultures, landscapes, cuisine and, even, landmarks. Whether it’s inhaling crisp mountain air in Canada at a luxurious camp set up 4,500 feet above sea level, or exploring the Komodo Islands in an antique, iconic yacht, these incredible experiences all offer a unifying theme: once in a lifetime. Where are the most expensive travel destinations in the world, and should you even consider vacationing in them?

Throughout my years of travel, I’ve aimed to visit the most affordable places in the world. It gets my budget to stretch further and I enjoy spending whatever I want when things don’t cost much.

But has that meant that I’m missing out on some unbeatable gems around the world, from Dubai to Zanzibar?

Would you scratch an expensive place from your list, or go all-in despite the costs, knowing that your travel experiences make you well-rounded and unique?

What follows is a list of the priciest countries to visit around the world, both from my own experience, and those of my friends and family members. We’re about to see if the most costly places to travel are worth it, aside from the price tag of spending time there!

most expensive vacation tour

North America

North America is for sure a diverse place. Taking into account Canada , the US and Mexico with the rest of Central America, you can see that it’s a big continent, with some of the most expensive places on earth (NYC) to travel in!

Let’s see some of the most expensive places in all of North America, with my experience visiting them.

New York City, NY, USA

NYC is where I’m from, as well as where I spent a decade in my 20s and 30s living in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Living in NYC, with all its glitz, high prices and competitiveness, has conditioned me to not be so shocked by the prices in the rest of the most expensive travel destinations on earth. However, NYC’s prices are definitely a shock to visitors from other parts of the US, and from abroad!

most expensive vacation tour

Why it’s expensive

I think New York City is expensive because it can get away with it. It’s the biggest (and best) major city in the United States, and no other city measures up. The influx of wealth, big business, finance, banking and celebrities have made NYC, in the past 10 years, an unbelievably expensive place to spend time in.

Is a trip to New York City worth it?

Of course a trip to NYC is worth it! I would recommend that anyone who has the means and the time should travel in NYC. The dense urban jungle of Manhattan, as well as the unbelievable mix of cultures all over, and gorgeous sites like Central Park, along with all the shopping, dining, entertainment and scenic views make NYC the BEST expensive city to visit!

If you want to live it up in NYC with an all-out trip, you can enjoy the sticker shock of things like a helicopter ride over Manhattan, staying at five-star hotels and meals out at top-rated restaurants. It’s not hard to spend money in NYC. ;-)

most expensive vacation tour

How to make a trip to NYC affordable

I wrote a guide for how to live in NYC on a budget , and a lot of the tips can be applied to a vacation or visit there. Before you go, see my list of what to know before visiting NYC , which will comment on costs.

most expensive vacation tour

San Francisco, CA, USA

San Francisco is a coastal city in California known for the Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley and the tech industry, cool breezy weather, great food and interesting spots like Lombard Street and Haight-Ashbury.

San Francisco was at one point, the most expensive city in the US (before NYC took its spot). SF is expensive because the cost of living matches the salaries of those who live there, and it exists within its own bubble. The times I’ve gone to SF have luckily been for business (when I wasn’t payin’!), but I’ve been there on my own too, and even though I’m used to the cost of everything in NYC, San Francisco has shocking prices like a package of strawberries for $8.

most expensive vacation tour

Is a trip to San Francisco worth it?

I think a trip to SF is worth it every once a while. Where else will you see gorgeous neighborhoods like Nob Hill, just a stone’s throw from cultural spots like Japantown? San Francisco truly does have an incredible food scene, as well as being the place where lots of new types of technologies get debuted (just look at self-driving cars!).

Is there a way to travel in San Francisco on a budget?

Yes, and I’ve done it. Instead of taking Uber or Lyft, I try to walk everywhere in San Francisco, or take the Bart. Instead of eating at top-rated restaurants, I try to eat at hole-in-the-wall joints like in Chinatown. In my 20s, I would also stay with friends, even if it was on the couch, and buy my own groceries at Safeway so that I could make some of my own meals.

If I were to go to San Francisco now, I would embrace a lot of things like museums, culture and more of the natural areas like the beaches within the city.

most expensive vacation tour

Banff National Park, Canada

As one of the coolest (and most expensive destinations for travel) in Canada, Banff National Park is gorgeous. Really, that is how I would describe it to anyone. I went to Banff National Park as well as Jasper National Park with my family several years ago and got to see the fantastic turquoise lakes, pristine snow-capped mountains, icy glaciers and pretty sunsets. When you arrive in Banff, you’ll see that meals, hotels and tours are all costly.

Banff is recently the most expensive place in Canada to travel . This comes from a few factors: first, there has been increasing demand for travel to national parks in the last several years and Banff has grown in popularity because of social media. Next, Banff itself is located a few hours outside of Calgary and is somewhat isolated. Lastly, Banff (the town) is not a giant place, so there are only so many hotels and accommodations. The cost of hotels ranks alongside the cost of hotels in major European cities.

most expensive vacation tour

Is a trip to Banff National Park worth it?

I think a trip to Banff is worth it once in your life when your wallet and savings account is feeling full. Places like Lake Louise and Peyto Lake (which looks like a dog’s profile) are, dare I say, outrageously beautiful (just don’t get all the other tourists in your photo). A trip to Banff is worth it if you want to be stunned by nature.

Is there a cheaper way to visit Banff?

I have a few tips for visiting Banff. If you’re young, try getting a bed or a room at any of Banff’s several youth hostels. Next, you can try visiting in shoulder season, in between the long days and great weather of summer and before ski season. Lastly, try booking early for your car rental.

most expensive vacation tour

Vancouver, Canada

Charming Vancouver is the biggest city in Canada’s west, and it reminds me a bit of Seattle. If you’ve been to eastern Canada, consider that Vancouver is quite different. Much of the city’s history relates to its location as a gateway to Asia, and this is probably my favorite aspect of Vancouver, because as far as dining goes, there is a TON of great Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese food!

most expensive vacation tour

There are a few reasons that contribute to the high cost of living (and travel) in Vancouver: home prices and real estate (thanks to some foreign buyers) have inflated and gotten higher, driving up the cost of other things, and the city also has a strong economy. Things look good for Vancouver, and when we started looking at hotels for our summer trip, I got a little nervous.

Is a trip to Vancouver worth it?

I thought being able to see and experience Vancouver was well worth it, even though it rained basically the whole time! I could tell that it is a beautiful and peaceful city, and I enjoyed the walkability. I think the trip is worth it because you can see nature with a short drive or public transit ride from the city center. We did the Grouse Hike with a group of friends and saw bears at the top of the mountain (they were in an enclosure, so that visitors can see them). I didn’t expect that all, and it felt very Canadian!

Is there a cheaper way to visit Vancouver?

When Dan and I went to Vancouver, we were really lucky in that we had a whole set of airline points and miles saved up from during COVID, and we blew them all on our round-trip flights and our hotel. In fact, our points didn’t cover the cost of an expensive hotel, so we stayed at a budget hotel (which was very nice, although we had a shared, not private, bathroom!) in a pretty solid location near Gastown. I would recommend saving up your miles to visit Vancouver on the cheap, if you can! Of course, you can visit my list of ways to visit Vancouver on a budget .

most expensive vacation tour

Middle East

While countries like Egypt, Turkey and Lebanon are known for being cheap, not all of the Middle East is inexpensive. These two Middle Eastern travel destinations might burn a hole in your pocket, so save up!

I love traveling in Israel, and having been there four times, it somehow keeps getting … more expensive? Gosh, I wish Israel wasn’t so expensive so I could go there all the time and eat like a king, but alas, a few contributing factors have made Israel expensive for travel.

Some ratings have placed Tel Aviv as the most expensive city in the world. A few things make Israel expensive. First, for Americans, the Israeli Shekel (ILS) keeps getting stronger against the dollar, although it’s weakening sometimes. The first time I went to Israel, I could get 4.25 Shekels for my USD, and when I went in 2016 and 2018, it was a bunch less. Dan and I felt pretty slammed the most recent time we visited Israel, with prices similar to those we’d expect in Manhattan (in Tel Aviv).

Israel got expensive due to demand. Tourists come from all over the world (Europe, Asia, the Americas) to see Israel, and the country is not all that big. There are new hotels in more parts of the country all the time, but for the most part, supply in accommodation is pretty set.

Maker:S,Date:2017-9-10,Ver:6,Lens:Kan03,Act:Lar02,E-Y

Is a trip to Israel worth it?

In one word: yes. In a few more words: yes, yes, yes. Traveling in Israel is incredible whether you go for a faith-based trip, or for the annual Pride festival in Tel Aviv, or if you want to soak up the winter sun on the beach or hang out in the Dead Sea.

My best moments of traveling in Israel are visiting the Dome of the Rock , seeing a sunset at Caesaria, skipping out to the beach in Tel Aviv with friends and wandering through Jerusalem and the Mahane Yehuda Shuk.

I hope everyone gets a chance to visit Israel in their lives!

most expensive vacation tour

Is there a cheaper way to visit Israel?

Not all aspects of an Israeli vacation have to be expensive. You can stay in less central areas of major cities, try to eat street food, take mass transit and do free activities. As for accommodation, we recommend Abraham Hostels and the Savoy Hotel , a mid-range type of stay.

For a while, it felt like everyone was going to Dubai. I saw photos of the Burj Khalifa, the casinos and the shopping malls all over social media. How is Dubai still all the rage, and so expensive at the same time?

Pretty simply, Dubai is a luxury destination. As Dubai became more known as a millionaire’s playground, it seems like the personality keeps ballooning and more luxury things rise out of the desert sands there. Also, alcohol is very expensive because it has to come from a licensed place. The cost of living in Dubai is high, but if you come from a major city like London or NYC, you may not be quite as shocked as a visitor who comes from a smaller city.

Is a trip to Dubai worth it?

I think we could agree that Dubai is simply like nowhere else. The glitz, shine and new-ness of Dubai make it a unique city that awes most visitors. It’s also a city in which to experience Muslim culture, visit some famous mosques and even go sand-boarding in a desert.

Can you go to Dubai cheaply?

Not every trip to Dubai has to be expensive, and there are a few ways to take a trip there on a shoestring budget. Check out this blog for a list of how to save money in Dubai .

South America

Most travelers head to South America for a backpacking trip on the cheap. I certainly did, with trips to Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. But what about the places in South America that are some of the most expensive destinations?

Patagonia, we should note, is a gorgeous natural mountain region split between Argentina and Chile. Argentina gets a much larger area of the Patagonia region in terms of land area. Within Patagonia, you’ll find travel hotspots like Torres del Paine National Park, Bariloche, Los Glaciares National Park and El Chalten. While traveling in Argentina is typically cheaper than the Chilean side, neither country’s Patagonia is cheap for travelers.

most expensive vacation tour

Why is Patagonia so expensive? It’s mostly due to demand, and the fact that most of the people who go to this gigantic land area are tourists and hikers. Tourism is increasing all over Patagonia, half due to social media popularity and half due to supply of things like hotels and lodges. Dan ran a half marathon in Patagonia, which goes to show how larger-scale events like this one are drawing large numbers of adventurers from far away, all at the same time.

Is there a way to travel to Patagonia affordably? One tip is to choose the Argentine side over the Chilean side (sorry, Chile) and another one is to budget your routes and drives so that you can save money on gas with your car rental.

most expensive vacation tour

The Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands is one of the more remote locations in this list of popular “expensive” destinations. What’s interesting is how stark the difference in travel is, between the Galapagos and mainland Ecuador, where I’ve traveled.

When I went to mainland Ecuador for nine days, I think I got asked, Are you also going to the Galapagos? I detailed that this would require yet another flight and probably some guided tour options, which I didn’t have the budget for at the time.

That’s the thing about the Galapagos: this incredible set of islands set to the west of Ecuador and the South American Mainland is typically visited with a tour package (although you could do the trip on your own, with a la carte pieces put together). With flights from Quito, and an all-in package that will set up your accommodation, excursions and way to see the unique wildlife in their habitats, you’ll probably be looking at a minimum of $1000 and up to $6000.

The reason for the high cost of travel in the Galapagos is due to sustainability, tourism logistics and cruises.

It’s worth it though: where else in the world can you see the Blue-Footed Booby, giant tortoises and penguins, all in the same island chain in the Pacific Ocean? This is why the Galapagos remains one of the most popular, albeit pricy, places to travel in South America.

Not everywhere in Europe is expensive to travel in. Some destinations, though, really take the cake. If you’ve saved your Euros for a trip to these expensive destinations in Europe, you still may be stunned to see the price of travel in these costly Eurotrip locales.

Iceland is usually the #1 most expensive travel destination that friends of mine have in mind when I say, Where’s the most expensive place you’ve traveled? Most would say Iceland.

Dan went to Iceland in our first year of dating and because he was trying to go along with a shoestring budget, he made sandwiches by going to a few supermarkets, stayed at a hostel or basic B&Bs and rented a small car for his drive around the Ring Road. You can see the details at Dan’s guide to Iceland on a budget .

most expensive vacation tour

Not everyone has the patience for budget travel in Iceland, and most travelers to Iceland are shocked at the prices, yet they go into the trip knowing what they’re in for. My friend Danielle says, “You could quote me that a side salad in Iceland is $30! It’s crazy how expensive veggies are because everything is imported.”

And that’s the reasoning! Iceland is expensive first because it’s in Scandinavia, which is a region with an outstandingly high cost of living, and second, Iceland is an island . Everything that is not Icelandic has to come imported from somewhere else, by a plane or a boat.

Is it worth it though? Most would say yes: a trip to Iceland is unforgettable. Just look at Dan’s photos of this pristine nature, from the geysers and mountains to the volcanoes and sea coast. Iceland is like nowhere else on Earth, and if you want to see it for yourself, it’ll come at a high price (money-wise).

most expensive vacation tour

Switzerland is known as the most expensive country in Europe to live in. Even for folks coming from NYC and London, Switzerland prices will be surprising. It’s hard to find a hotel in Switzerland for less than $150 a night, and even meals out at fast food will run you $10-15.

You can blame the high standard of living that makes Switzerland expensive. Wages and salaries are high, so everything is priced accordingly. Travelers coming from lower-cost-of-living areas and countries might be astounded.

Is traveling to Switzerland worth it? You can be the judge. If you’re dying to see the Alps, and picturesque cities like Zurich, a trip to Switzerland will be one for the books.

Norway is where my eyes really light up if I see my friend’s photos of Trolltunga, one of the most photographed places in Norway. As a huge and long country that stretches all the way to the Arctic, Norway is a really special place!

Is it cheap though? Far from it. Norway is also one of the most expensive places in Europe, where you’ll have a nice time if you’re ready for the strike to your travel budget. While hotels in a place like Oslo aren’t shockingly costly, it seems to be the food that really does people in.

A meal at an “inexpensive” restaurant will likely cost you $15-20, as will a sandwich (if you see this list here at Numbeo.com ). A beer in a bar will also cost you between $8-10. Many of the high prices in Norway reflect the cost of labor, which pays relatively well, because of those Scandinavian standards.

My cousin Emmy says, “My number one experience from my time in Norway was that everything was wildly expensive. I remember getting like a 6-inch subway sandwich because it was like the only non-grocery store thing I could afford and it being equivalent to like, 25 bucks.”

Is a trip to Norway worth it? I think Norway is an incredible destination, both because of Norwegian culture and the unbelievable natural scenes you’ll find at the fjords and near the Arctic, like Lofoten, where my friend Kelly went and really enjoyed it. Kelly says that Norway is “hands-down one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever been to. We went for the nature and spent a lot of our time hiking and driving around, so even though things were expensive most of our activities were free.”

Is there a way to offset the high costs? Kelly says, “We also grocery shopped and did meal prep since we were staying in remote areas without a lot of restaurants. A friend suggested bringing snacks (granola bars, trail snacks, etc.) from the US, which was super helpful!”

Denmark is the happiest country on earth, and also one of the most incredibly expensive. Why is it so expensive for travelers? The country has high salaries and high taxes, which both contribute to a high cost of living (and a very high standard of living). With everything in Denmark being “high,” you can bet that travelers pay the price.

To get your finances ready for a trip to Denmark, be prepared to shell out for travel expenses like food (note that hotels aren’t terribly expensive, and will run you MUCH less than NYC, on average). A budget dinner will cost up to $30 per person and fast food could be as much as $20.

Is it worth it though, is the question. Most will say yes: Denmark is an attractive place to visit because of eye-catching places like Copenhagen and Skagen. If you need to try to save money, try budget restaurants, walking instead of taking transport and staying in accommodation toward the outskirts of a city or town.

There’s a hack, from my friend Emma , who says, “Denmark is the best if you love design and baked goods. I could eat every meal at a bakery or casual spot and have a VERY good time.” So there’s that!

I love Asia because so much of it is cheap! Having been to 15 countries in Asia, I have a good handle on the inexpensive ones, as well as the expensive ones . See my top expensive Asian vacation ideas below.

One thing I would recommend not to do is to go from a really cheap country to a really expensive one like Singapore. After spending two years in mainland China, I backpacked across China and then went to Singapore to visit a friend.

My mind was absolutely blown to shreds with the price of what everything cost in Singapore. Even ten years ago when I went, my friend took me to bars and clubs where a $25 (in US Dollars) cover fee to get in got us one drink, and entry. My friend lived in Geylang, and from the central parts of the city back to his place, a taxi cost me $40. A beer in the 7Eleven was $7! I just really could not believe Singapore.

If there’s a way to “do Singapore on the cheap,” it would be staying in a B&B or hotel in a neighborhood outside the city center, eating street food (which is the best in the world, in Singapore) and walking a lot. I certainly had fun at the bars and clubs, but the sticker shock put me in a bit of a budget hole at the time because we did it every night!

most expensive vacation tour

Japan is one of my favorite countries. Having been there twice, to Tokyo, Osaka and Narita-Shi, and having had different experiences, my main takeaways are that Japan is always worth the trip no matter what it costs. This being said, Japan is not cheap.

A joke among my friends and I was that if we went to Japan (at the time, the Yen to the Dollar was NOT in our favor), we’d be eating sushi and hot meals from Family Mart (which is a convenience store). Family Mart does have great food, though, considering that it’s like a 7Eleven. My friend Emma noted, and I quote, “The hard boiled eggs there are literally perfect.” Hotels and accommodation in Japan will seem expensive because you’re not getting much space. This especially rings true in cities. Emma reminded me that in Tokyo, your hotel room or Airbnb will be very small, but efficient, and there’s so much to explore anyway. You’ll hardly spend time there.

I say going to Japan is worth it, despite it being a very expensive place to travel, because Japanese people are amazing, and Japan is generally amazing.

I think what surprises most travelers is that Africa, a continent that goes into our news and media as developing countries with less wealth than the West, is surprisingly expensive for travel. My friend Daniel Herszberg , who has been to every country in the world, said that some of the most expensive places for him have been Sub-Saharan Africa, where the cost of hotels is “jacked up” because of diplomats.

In more well-traveled parts of Africa, the cost of travel is still high, although not extreme, like for Daniel’s purposes. Let’s see why.

most expensive vacation tour

Zanzibar is a photo-worthy (I’ll cut to the chase! Ha) island off the coast of Tanzania, known for white sands and blue water beaches to rest your eyes on. It’s not cheap though. Zanzibar is, out of the more “well-traveled” destinations in Africa, one of the most expensive. That’s because it’s an island.

Hotels are where a lot of the expense in Zanzibar comes from. Many are resorts and are priced at $200-300. Day trips are also expensive.

African Safaris (various countries)

I went on a safari in South Africa, and this was the bulk of the money I spent during my entire trip. I recall it was around $400 and that was a lot at the time. Going on a safari is a quintessential travel bucket list item for many globetrotters, and are marketed as a “must” if you’re headed to Africa.

My friend Danielle, who went to the region recently, said that the catch in terms of being pricy is that there aren’t backpacker or budget options really for Serengeti (Tanzania) or Masai Mara (Kenya) for hotels. In order to see the animals, you have to go on a tour.

For Nairobi (Kenya), according to Danielle, you could probably find cheap places to stay, but if you want to do a safari, “It’s really tough if you’re on a budget.”

most expensive vacation tour

And finally, the last continent: Antarctica. The world’s least-visited continent is now accessible for the modern traveler, and the only way to do it is … to take a cruise.

It’s not that Antarctica is actually expensive; rather, it’s that the way to get there and experience it safely (and there aren’t any alternatives) is with a large group on any number of cruises and tour packages.

It’s common knowledge now that going to Antarctica can’t be done cheaply, quickly or unsafely, as it is far away, and isolated. Cruise tours from either Chile or Argentina will run a traveler $5000 to $15,000 depending on the type of vessel, length of trip and tier of luxury.

Travel Experts Reveal Their Most Expensive Vacation (And Why It Was Worth It)

Senior Reporter, HuffPost Life

Polynesian island getaways can be expensive but offer a unique and relaxing experience that creates lifelong memories.

The internet is filled with excellent hacks for saving money on travel . Whether you book with points, scoop up exclusive deals, choose dates and locations based on price, or take advantage of free attractions, there are countless ways to take a relatively low-cost vacation.

But sometimes, a particular travel experience calls for a splurge. And if you can make room in your budget for that pricier vacation, there’s nothing wrong with splashing out every once in a while. After all, you get what you pay for, and an expensive hotel, airline ticket or excursion might offer a luxury experience full of memories to last a lifetime.

We asked experts in the travel space to share the most expensive vacation they’ve ever taken ― and why they felt it was worth the splurge.

French Polynesia

“The most expensive vacation that I’ve ever taken was to French Polynesia. I spent time on both Moorea and Bora Bora. French Polynesia was a dream destination for me so it was definitely worth it. From the moment you arrive the hospitality and sheer beauty of the islands is immense. It’s a place where pictures truly don’t do it justice. I also appreciated that it’s a destination that has a lot to offer. I took a guided tour where I learned more about the history and culture of the islands. And I also had the ability to rent a boat and snorkel and explore on my own. It’s a destination that feels remote in the best possible way and forces you to disconnect and unplug. Not to mention that you’re staying in an accommodation where you can wake up, take a few steps and dive into the clearest water imaginable.” ― Amina Dearmon , a luxury travel adviser and owner of Perspectives Travel

“The most expensive vacation I’ve taken was to Antarctica, though it was 100% worth the cost. We took an expedition cruise, which was a small ship experience and an itinerary with land-based activities. From dawn until dusk we were hiking, kayaking, exploring, swimming, sliding down glacial mountain tops, visiting a research base, eating incredible food, drinking amazing wine, and taking the polar plunge! Humpback whales would swim within 100 meters of our zodiac, penguins would walk straight over our toes, and we sat next to colonies of seals without disturbing them, left thoroughly in awe of the array of hardcore wildlife which call the icy continent their home. I can 100% recommend Antarctica as a destination which lives up to the hype of being a trip of a lifetime.” ― Meg Jerrard, co-founder of Solo Female Travelers

South Africa

“The most expensive vacation my partner and I have ever taken was to Londolozi Game Reserve, a premier luxury safari lodge in the Sabi Sands Nature Reserve in South Africa. A safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Londolozi pairs a life-changing wildlife adventure with unparalleled five-star service to create the most splurge-worthy safari experience on earth. ― Collette Stohler, travel agent with Elite Travel Arrangements and director of marketing at Roamaroo

“My recent trip to South Africa was easily the most I have ever paid for a vacation. While the accommodations in Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, and Cape Town were very affordable, the flights accounted for 90% of the total cost. As someone who cannot sleep on a plane in economy, I knew I needed to splurge. Unfortunately, United Polaris business class seats are very expensive when buying with cash, and there was no award availability for my trip dates. Usually, I plan the trip based on the cheapest days to fly, but the dates were already selected by my travel companions. Somehow, it still felt worth it. United Polaris business class seats turn into lie-flat beds, and we were given multiple pillows, blankets and slippers. I felt completely refreshed after each flight, and sleeping all that time made it seem short.” ― Phil Dengler, co-founder of The Vacationer

“The most expensive vacation destination I have been to must have been my trip to Mykonos in Greece. I have traveled there two times and both vacations were extraordinarily fun. I adore Mykonos because it is an accepting island with sections that are extremely LGBT-friendly. The Greek island has such a unique style with its famous blue and white architecture. Five-star hotels like the Mykonian Kyma are stunning while offering outstanding service. If you’re looking for a luxurious vacation, you can find incredible beaches on properties at every price point. Not to mention, Mykonos nightlife is on another level. Islands tend to be more expensive, but if you can afford it, I’d recommend going to this one. Mykonos is sure to exceed your expectations.” ― Rocky Trifari , travel blogger

“I traveled to Australia from the U.S. to scuba dive in the Great Barrier Reef. It was a truly memorable experience and is definitely worth the splurge. As an advanced scuba diver, the Great Barrier Reef had always been a dream destination for me. Being able to make that dream come true and explore one of the world’s most iconic dive spots is a priceless experience. The underwater world I experienced in the Great Barrier Reef presented an exceptional display of colors that I hadn’t seen in other dive locations. This rare sight, with vibrant blues and purples of the coral, made the trip even more special and unique. Exploring the Great Barrier Reef allowed you to encounter large fish species that you had never seen on the other side of the world. This opportunity to witness unfamiliar marine life further enriched my diving experience.” ― Jessica-Kameko Rooks , blogger at Travel With Meko

“The most expensive vacation I’ve ever taken was a trip to Japan in 2018. It set me back a few thousand dollars in a short amount of time, but I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Most people prefer to splurge on something luxurious, but that’s not me. I prefer to splurge on experiences and things that will last a whole lifetime. From staying in traditional ryokans and meeting locals to bonding with other travelers from around the world and experiencing Japan’s unique (and quirky) culture, it was unlike anything I had experienced up to that point in my life. It is a trip that created unforgettable memories, expanded my horizons, and eventually inspired me to be a travel blogger.” ― Sean Lau , travel blogger

Multiple travel experts pointed to their Japanese travels as costlier vacations that were well worth the price tag.

“In the mid to late 1990s, my mom took me to Japan for the first time. Back in the ’90s, ticket prices to Asia were over $2,000. Japan was also in its wild “bubble era,” so the yen was thriving and everything was expensive. We splurged on a stay at the Shinjuku Hilton, and went on guided tours to Kamakura and Kyoto by bullet train. In the 1990s, Japan was not as popular a travel destination and the city wasn’t geared to tourists. I’m forever grateful my mom invested in taking us to Japan in the ’90s, as the experience wouldn’t have been the same if I had gone later in time. Not many people knew about Harajuku fashion and culture back then, as these were the early days of the internet. I remember being mesmerized by the street style and futuristic tech that I saw firsthand ― it was like being on another planet. This 1990s trip to Japan was absolutely worth the price, as it spurred my love of the country and its culture, and led to the writing and TV work I do today.” ― La Carmina , travel expert and author

“We traveled to Peru several years ago, which was a dream of mine, so I decided to splurge on certain experiences. For example, we took a luxury train to Machu Picchu and hired a private guide so we could explore at our own pace and ask as many questions as we wanted. We also splurged on a few gastronomical experiences, like dinner at some of the top restaurants in Lima, like Central and Astrid y Gaston. We took this trip five years ago and we still talk about it. For me, it was worth it because it was a dream destination for me and I wanted to do it right. We saved for a year to have the ideal experience that we wanted.” ― Jessica van Dop DeJesus, founder and editor at The Dining Traveler

“The most expensive vacation I have ever taken was a two-week comprehensive wellness and weight loss program at the Waldhotel Health & Medical Excellence , which is part of the iconic Bürgenstock Hotels & Resort in Lake Lucerne, Switzerland. The two weeks I spent in the Swiss Alps in February at the Waldhotel were truly transformative. The program included a full medical analysis and consultation, nutritional coaching and cooking classes, a specially curated diet with every meal prepared, several personal training sessions, cryotherapy, massages, dermatology consultation and more. I learned techniques, exercises and recipes that continue to benefit my health. The investment was well worth the return!” ― Kareem George, travel adviser and founder of Culture Traveler

East Africa

“My trip to Rwanda and Kenya in East Africa was nothing short of amazing. It was the trip of a lifetime, and the price reflected that as well. In Kenya, I stayed at two different luxury safari lodges (Segera Retreat and Angama Mara) that included game drives and onsite experiences. Easily one of the highlights of my entire time in Kenya was floating gently over the Maasai Mara in a hot air balloon. Next, it was on to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Singita Kwitonda Lodge offers an experience that is unlike any other. The lodge was designed in response to the remarkable location, which overlooks breathtaking views of the Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes. Of course, gorilla trekking had become a bucket list adventure I was dying to experience. You have the ability to encounter one of Africa’s most majestic and gentle creatures in the wild, while immersed in the beauty of their pristine natural habitat. Was it worth it? 100%. The experience of being able to float above the Mara, sit with wild gorillas halfway around the world, up the side of a volcano in the middle of Africa, is hard to put into words. It is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life, and ranks at the top of coolest things I’ve ever done.” ― Brianna Glenn, CEO and travel adviser at Milk + Honey Travels

“The most expensive vacation I’ve taken was the Premium Tanzania tour with Intrepid. As an African American I’ve always wanted to visit Africa with my mom. Not only did we get to go back to the motherland, we got to experience a safari! Our local guides were so knowledgeable about all of the animals. It was a dream come true to see so many of the ‘Big Five’ up close and in their natural habitat. I would encourage anyone interested in connecting with nature and experiencing the real-life Lion King to visit Tanzania. You’ll stay in permanent camps in the middle of national parks where you’ll see and hear the animals from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep. When you’re not glamping, you’re staying in premium hotels with pools and stunning views. There are more affordable ways to have this experience, but the pools, spas, and other inclusions made it worth the splurge.” ― Annette Richmond, creator of Fat Girls Traveling

Grand Cayman

“We went to Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands as a fun beach escape with a group of our close friends for Gabi’s 30th birthday. It was an incredible trip but also by far the most expensive, and that honestly really surprised us. The minute we started looking into accommodations along Seven Mile Beach (the popular area for tourists) we realized if the accommodations were this expensive, it meant almost everything else was going to be as well. We paid more then we even normally would in New York City for every single meal of the day! Since it’s a small island, a lot of things are imported and therefore way more expensive. Having said all of that, it was definitely worth the splurge! The island itself was beautiful! We really loved being there, and it wasn’t touristy at all! It was also a birthday trip ― so it felt celebratory, and people didn’t mind paying those prices as much. The food on Grand Cayman was also incredible everywhere we went, so even if the price kind of shocked us, we were happy that it was at least really delicious!” ― Gabi & Shanna , travel bloggers at 27travels

Mexico City

“The most expensive vacation I’ve ever taken was to Mexico City during the holidays ― the most expensive time of the year. I spent 30 days there from Dec. 3, 2021 to Jan. 3, 2022. It was expensive because I splurged on my accommodations: $3,000 for a one-month, short-term rental. To me, this was worth it because I wanted a luxe experience. I wanted to feel extremely comfortable. I was staying there by myself and had been traveling for an entire year adjacent to that experience, so I wanted a luxe place to relax with really nice amenities, a really nice shower, a really nice bed, a really nice view, and a lot of sunlight so I could work remotely. I also ate out somewhat frequently (at least once every other day), which cost an extra $1,000. Mexico City can be extremely affordable, but that month I was trying to treat myself to a hard-earned vacation so I ate out at great sushi places, had drinks with friends, went to Xochimilco, and did a lot of tourist activities. So between the accommodations, the food, the entertainment, Uber s, shopping, and other random activities, it was probably a $5,000 trip, making it the most expensive trip I’ve ever been on. But it was 100% worth the splurge for the safety, luxury and relaxation that I got out of my investment.” ― Gabby Beckford , travel expert and founder of Packs Light

Hi... Home too soon and reflecting on how great our trip with Intrepid was. We usually make our own arrangements when we travel. Though older, we do NOT enjoy the big bus experience. However, as we slip into our 70s, it's tougher to arrange all complexities of a trip. Since we are explorers at heart, we thought we'd try a small group trip. So...signed onto Scandinavia Explorer with Intrepid. How wonderful to be so independent yet not have to make all the arrangements. Hrvoje, our guide, was a walking encyclopedia about the sites and both fun and informative. And enjoyed meeting an Aussie lady to share our experiences. A very relaxed sort of trip. We will book another. So 5 stars!!! A little disappointed about the bike ride cancellation, but soon realized that street construction and other circumstances were the cause. One tip, however. On the small cruise part of our trip, we ended up in separate rooms. Not our guide's fault (he was the best), but perhaps with prior forewarning, we could've paid a little supplement to be in the same room even with separate single beds. We've been all around the world yet found ourselves wide-eyed with discoveries on this trip. Small trips like this allow one to meet the locals, too. Can't believe it's over. Although memories aren't. Thank you. What a charming almost fairy tale intro to Norway, Sweden, and Finland! Tom and Sherry Miller from U.S.A.

An excellent trip with an outstanding tour director (Sarah Rossi) and highly skilled bus driver (Bruno). Plenty of option excursion choices along with very good included tours with knowledgeable local guides. The only down side were two of the hotels - Hotel Marinela, Sofia Bulgaria, and Mercure Belgrade Excelsior - that were in desperate need of refurbishment not to mention functioning air conditioning and bathroom cleaning. Otherwise, great trip.

Fall/Spring Swiss Alps Drive in a Porsche: Pre-set sat-nav guided

Where to begin?! When I discovered EpikDrives, I knew this would be the perfect surprise trip for my husband. Initially the packages and trip seemed “to good to be true” but Stephan was quick to respond to my 1,000 questions. We didn’t find many reviews which made me nervous but booked regardless and ARE WE GLAD WE DID! This turned out to be one of the best trips we have ever taken. Planning of the trip and booking was seamless. Stephan was so helpful and prompt with responses throughout the entire process from start to finish. Once we arrived in Switzerland, Stephan was waiting at the hotel with our supercar on arrival. We were impressed with the ease of everything! We would get into the car each morning and essentially hit “go” on the GPS. Easy GPS guidance to follow along with designated stops for sightseeing, coffee if needed, and re-fueling. We also enjoyed the binder that accompanied with printed out information of the itinerary for each day and description of the different sites or mountain passes. I would certainly give EpikDrives and Stephan a 10+ if I could and we will definitely be taking another trip with them in the near future. Thank you, Stephan, for such an incredible experience!

Balkan Discovery: 12-Day Cultural Expedition

Excellent tour. I was made to feel special right from the go, as I received a very warm welcome. I learnt so much of the history of the Balkans and was introduced to places I had never heard of. The restaurant choices choices were wonderful. I learnt to eat and appreciate local food All guides were amazing but I loved Viktor in North Macedonia because of his friendly and quiet personality. Mike was amazing as a tour leader, who made sure everything was up to standard . He also checked that I was having a great experience. Ivan our drive is one of the best. To Tiana and Ivan the photographers who accompanied us, thank you for ensuring I had the best time. Your photographs and videos are very special. My highlights, way to many to mention but Kotor, Postajne caves, Tirana, Skopje and Sarajeva were some but for different reasons. Would I book Balkland again definitely. The experience is what counts and I really learnt to appreciate the varied countries and gained a small insight into their beauty and history.

This Is One of the World’s Most Expensive Vacations Made for the Ultra-Rich

Safari travel company Go2Africa has just released the world’s most expensive vacation that will cost a family of four over $690k.

Recently, Go2Africa conducted a study analyzing over 134,000 enquiries to their website and found that the most popular locations safari lovers want to visit are Kenya (23%), Tanzania (22%) and South Africa (21%).

The most popular attractions also included seeing the Big 5 (26%), visiting Victoria Falls (14%), meeting locals (10%), visiting Cape Town (9%) and Gorilla Trekking (8%).

With this in mind, they have curated the world’s most expensive safari, visiting six countries over an action-packed 24 days and costing $172,545 per person.

The vacation takes guests on a whirlwind tour of Africa’s most exotic locations where they’re almost guaranteed to see the Big Five. The itinerary boasts the most luxurious accommodations in Africa, from tented safari camps to riverside treetop villas, the most exclusive activities with experts you could only dream of meeting and some of the best nature the world has to offer.

Guests will spend over three weeks exploring the highlights of Southern and East Africa while enjoying private charter flights between each location. Locations include Kenya, Victoria Falls, Cape Town, Volcanoes National Park, Serengeti and the white sands of the Seychelles.

No expense has been spared, with luxury accommodation exclusively reserved for the trip including a completely private island on their final days on the island of Cousine in the Seychelles. Expertly curated experiences include a photography safari, a hot air balloon ride, night game drives, gorilla trekking and even a day trip on a private yacht.

Guests will travel in style with their own personalized and locally-made leather luggage that they’ll receive before the trip. There's also the option of a private film crew to document the entire trip with a fully edited video to look forward to when landing home.

The tour will follow in the footsteps of some of the biggest celebrities in the world. Ellerman House in Cape Town is a favorite of both The Kardashians and Meryl Streep. The private game reserve of Singita is another star-studded spot playing host to Oprah, Charlize Theron, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel.

Throughout the trip, guests will experience local life by visiting numerous positive impact projects including Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, Alfajiri Foundation and Maunga Village Primary School as well as contributing to the conservation of each park. Go2Africa will also fully offset the carbon footprint of your trip.

Lee-Anne Kock, Head of Product at Go2Africa says: “The Ultimate African Safari is a one-of-a-kind itinerary that we’ve spent years perfecting. Every activity, location and accommodation has been hand-selected by our team of local experts with decades of on-the-ground experience. The itinerary focuses on private and exclusive travel where we’ve crafted curated experiences that are unique to each destination.

“Guests won’t just see Africa, but experience the heart of its culture as they visit each location and become involved in the community projects that make the continent so vibrant and welcoming.”

The Ultimate Safari starts at $172,545 per person. First come, first served with availability for only one party. Visit Go2Africa for more information.

  • 12 Of The Most Expensive Countries To Travel To

Norway is an extremely expensive country to visit.

  • One day visiting some of these countries can exceed $400.
  • Most expensive cup of coffee according to Hoppa’s 2020 study is in Abu Dhabi at $20.10
  • Most Expensive Big Mac according to Hoppa’s 2020 study is in Reykjavik at $15.38

There are places for budget backpacking travelers, then there are places like the ones on this list that are ready to burn a hole in your pocket and drain your bank account. We’re talking expensive hotel stays, exorbitant taxi rates, and pricey fine-dining to spoil your palate. If money is no object and you’re looking for a place to travel and spend serious amounts of cash, here are the countries that are mainstays in many most expensive lists based on studies like the ones published by Hoppa and others like the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report.

12. Switzerland

most expensive vacation tour

With beautiful crystal clear lakes, sprawling flower fields, and snow-capped Alpine mountains, Switzerland should be in any traveler’s bucket list. This small landlocked country has plenty of nature to keep your mouth open in awe throughout your trip. It’s like living inside a painting only this one will bore a hole in your pocket.

CEO World Magazine calls it the most expensive country in the world to live in, and Zurich, it’s business hub is home to Bahnhoffstrausse, the most expensive shopping strip in the world. This avenue is home to brands like Rolex, Gucci, and Prada but what makes shopping here extra expensive is the high cost of living in the country.

Between airfares, hotel rates, and taxi fares, Switzerland tops many lists of expensive countries to visit. It ranks third in Hoppa’s 2020 List of Most Expensive Holiday Destinations in the World. In another list, Zurich ranked first in the most expensive fine dining options for tourists category and third in terms of expenses you’ll spend to travel around the country.

11. Cayman Islands

most expensive vacation tour

This picturesque island located in the Caribbean is home to pristine white sand beaches, beautiful coral reserves, turquoise-green waters, and a promise of untouched peaceful seclusion. It’s a slice of paradise for many tourists looking for a reprieve from their busy lifestyles.

The place has become synonymous with luxurious-living, affluence, and millionaire lifestyle in recent years so much so that Hoppa has ranked it number one in the list of most expensive holiday destinations.

Frolicking in Cayman’s talcum-soft sands and coconut lined beaches come with a price and a hefty one at that. A holiday in this island will cost you around $590 a day. It has the most expensive hotel rooms in the world at a whopping $360 per person per night on average.

most expensive vacation tour

Many flock this Scandinavian country each year for its rich culture rooted in its Viking heritage, astonishing natural sceneries, and charming little lakeside towns. It is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites , and to beautiful Norwegian flords or narrow lake drains. Oslo, its capital city is among the cleanest and safest in the world but it’s also notoriously expensive.

Norway is one of Northern Europe’s most expensive countries and is often on the list of most expensive places to visit. Be ready to spend around $258 per day in the capital and even more if you plan to buy goods as goods and services cost around 50% higher than those in the US.

most expensive vacation tour

It’s easy to see why Denmark is one of the most favorite places for short-term visits for tourists around the globe. They have a medieval Viking charm, lots of activities to do, and locals who are often always happy and welcoming. They are famous for their colorful architecture that lines their waterways, and a myriad of castles to visit. Many tourists enjoy the sights and sound of the capital city Copenhagen until they start noticing the dent the prices are making on their bank accounts.

Average spending in the city would be around $316 per day. And while it's relatively cheap to get there by plane, what will set you back are the prices of goods and services which are 40% more expensive than those in the US.

most expensive vacation tour

Tagged the Venice of the North because of its numerous canals that traverse parts of its cities, Sweden is one of the most beautiful Scandinavian countries to visit. Stockholm, its capital city is chic and charming with plenty of activities to do for tourists. You can walk around and admire the architecture or visit one of the many museums to learn about Viking culture.

While not as expensive as say New York or Switzerland, Sweden still commands quite a hefty price tag for tourists. On average one will have to spend around $316 per day to enjoy this Scandinavian country. While getting there won’t be as pricey (they have one of the cheapest airfares) staying there is a different story. The price of goods in Sweden is 30% more expensive than in the US.

7. Ice Land

most expensive vacation tour

One of, if not the, most beautiful Nordic Countries, Iceland has been a destination of choice of those with a little more money to spend. Often called the land of ice and fire, Iceland boasts of picturesque mountains, glacial lagoons, geothermal lakes, rock and ice formations, and their famed-geysers.

But this much beauty comes with a price tag too! Ranked fifth in the world's most expensive destinations, Ice land can cost you $447 per day. While flights to Iceland can be among the cheapest, prices of other goods are 10% more expensive there than in the US.

most expensive vacation tour

Already in many people’s travel bucket lists the world over, Japan is home to exquisite foodie fares, unadulterated culture, and plenty of interesting sights and sounds to experience. While there are many scrumptious foods to fit your budget in their convenience stores, still, compared to other countries Japan is one of the most expensive places to visit as a tourist.

Tokyo, its capital city, is home to the famous Ginza street where glitzy flagship designer stores have set-up shop and are ready to max out your credit cards. A hotel in the city will cost you around $300 a night and that’s just for four-star accommodation. Taxi fare here is among the most expensive in the world. It ranks fourth in the 2020 world’s most expensive places to live in.

most expensive vacation tour

With tourist hot spots like New York City and San Francisco, the US still tops many lists of expensive places to travel. Although toppled by the Cayman Islands in Hoppa’s list, New York, home to the world’s most expensive zip codes, still ranks fourth in terms of demanding a hefty price tag. New York is notoriously expensive and will set you back $464 per day followed closely by Las Vegas which will cost a tourist around $392 per day.

The city that never sleeps, still commands one of the priciest hotel price tags at around $250-$300 a night and that doesn’t even include the price for cab rides, dinners, and excursions.

4. United Arab Emirates

most expensive vacation tour

Many cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi in recent years have become home to favorite travel destinations of those with a little more money to spend. Fueled by oil wealth, these places have become glamorous playgrounds for the rich. Its unique architecture, flashy shopping centers, and a man-made island shaped like a palm tree are a testament to their opulence and love of luxury. With exquisite excursions such as helicopter trips and yacht cruises, Dubai is one of the most expensive holiday destinations ranking second in Hoppa’s list.

A five-star hotel will cost you around $300 per night on average and the much-talked-about Royal Caribbean shore-cruise , the most expensive in the world, costs around $33,000, and no that’s not a typo.

most expensive vacation tour

Go to England, they say, go to England to visit the queen, but what they didn’t tell you is how much it will cost you. A visit to one of Europe’s main business hub and center of everything hip and happening in Europe will cost you around $382 per day. Of course there are always more affordable options like sleeping at a friend’s house but on average a tourist would have to spend up to $217 for a night in a hotel in London. The UK also has one of the most expensive train ticket prices in Europe. England and other areas in the UK have a lot to offer and a wide array of places for all types of tourists but it’s one of the most expensive places to visit so be prepared and purchase tickets in advance.

most expensive vacation tour

When it comes to European adventures, France still tops the list of places to visit to get an understanding of European culture. Famous for its rich culture, history, and culinary offerings, France is still one of the most interesting places for tourists the world over. The famous French city Paris is has earned the reputation as the city of romance, as well as opulence and luxury.

While there are now many budget options that will let you visit the city, on average a trip to France will still set you back quite more compared to other countries. A day in Paris will cost you around $352. Many historical palaces have been converted to hotels, one of which charges $26,000 a night .

1. Australia

most expensive vacation tour

A favorite destination for nature and wildlife lovers as well as adventure seekers,  Australia is home to The Great Barrier Reef and the famed Sydney Opera House. Its for travelers who enjoy the great outdoors, sun sand and wild animals.

But the land down under has become not just an expensive place to live but also to visit. Aside from the exorbitant price of plane tickets to reach this seemingly isolated island South of the globe, goods and services are also around 10% more expensive than those in the US. On average a tourist in Sydney would have to shell out around $295 per day according to Hoppa’s study .

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

most expensive vacation tour

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year.

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.”

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

Learn more: Best travel insurance

What is the best place to travel in summer?

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said.

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Top 5 domestic destinations

◾ Orlando, Florida

◾ Los Angeles

◾ Las Vegas

Top 5 international destinations

◾ Cancun, Mexico

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds.

  • ◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations. ◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible.

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes.

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

11 Most Expensive Hotels in Dublin, Ireland

The capital of the Republic of Ireland, Dublin, is an addictive blend of hedonism and heritage, topped off with a dash of the friendly and warm Irish spirit. It’s a city chock-full of history, whether it’s its Viking past, its elegant Georgian architecture, or the cathedrals and medieval castles. What makes it all the better is that the charismatic Dubliners make for excellent hosts. It’s what makes staying here so amazing, besides the great hotels, of course. But you’ll be surprised to know that the most expensive hotels in Dublin, Ireland, are truly the pinnacle of luxury. We can’t tell you how the other half lives, but we sure do know where they stay, don’t they?

After all, there’s nothing quite like an Irish welcome, and staying at one of the city’s lavish five-stars only ups the ante on all the warmth and charm. Topping everything off is a dollop of lavish amenities mixed with classic Georgian architecture and cool designs. Finally, whether they’re classic historical stays or modern ones, you’ll find that they’re charming in spades. Here are our picks for the most luxurious stays in Dublin.

While planning a trip to Dublin, why not start with the top things to do in Dublin ?

Table of contents

The alex dublin city, o’callaghan collection, the college green hotel dublin, autograph collection, the clarence, dylan hotel, conrad dublin, fitzwilliam hotel dublin, anantara the marker dublin hotel, intercontinental dublin, the westbury, the shelbourne, the merrion hotel, where do celebrities stay in dublin, what is the most expensive area of dublin, what is the luxury hotel in dublin.

The Alex Dublin City, O’Callaghan Collection stands where a train station formerly stood and is officially one of the city’s cool kids. It’s evident the minute you walk in; the airy lobby is home to a posh and sleek co-working space, complete with forest-green marble tables, Art Deco fixtures, and peeps furiously typing away on laptops. At the same time, there are nods to its illustrious history in the form of clever design details. Think leather luggage straps affixed to wardrobe drawers and ticker signs above the elevators.

Since it’s a city-center property, there are no amenities like a spa, tennis grounds, and gardens, but there is a spacious gym right across the street at its sister hotel, Monte Clare. Moreover, there are newspapers and a lobby business section with high-speed Wi-Fi and sleek desks. Plus, there’s even a specialist desk that offers tours, both local and national. And, of course, the service was friendly and prompt, and the staff was warm and charming. Finally, life at the Alex revolves around the main restaurant/café serving all meals and has a resident espresso bar, Steam, with some very good coffee.

With blue wood panels, retro telephones, and deep-green velvet cushions, the rooms here boast an endearingly chic vibe. Besides super-soft beds and well-placed electrical outlets, the executive-level rooms even have Nespresso machines and lounge access with drinks and snacks. What’s unique about this hotel’s rooms is that its entry-level rooms are on the higher side—EUR 420 (USD 460). On the other hand, its most expensive, the Alex Suite, costs EUR 600 (USD 650).

The College Green Hotel Dublin Autograph Collection has a beautifully agreeable blend of contemporary design and Georgian architecture in a very central location. Thus, its excellent position on St Stephen’s Green’s southwestern corner puts green open spaces within a stone’s throw, like the secret oasis of the Iveagh Gardens. On the inside, a foyer with outsized ceiling lamps, terrazzo floors, plush furniture, and minimalist, art-free make for a confidently distinctive touch.

Again, since this is a city-center hotel, it doesn’t have a pool or a spa. However, it does have an airy, spanking-new, and spacious up-to-the-minute fitness center. Moreover, the service is prompt and excellent. There’s also an executive lounge upstairs and a hot-desking zone off the lobby, complete with wonderful street views. The highlight is the Green restaurant and bar, with excellent meals and huge windows overlooking the street.

Even the entry-level standard rooms, which cost around EUR 380 (USD 410), are relatively spacious with calming color palettes. Moreover, they all come with bathrobes, tea/coffee makers, soundproofing, and dinky perks like retro-style telephones, Roberts radios, and original Irish art. Plus, all bathrooms are brand-new with Paul Costelloe’s ‘Linen’ bath products. Of them all, the College Presidential Suite is the priciest, costing EUR 1,000/night (USD 1,100), and has excellent city views from its balcony.

How would you like to stay in a swanky hotel partly owned by the amazing Irish rock band U2? We’re talking about The Clarence , which sits in a historic structure overlooking River Liffey and Dublin’s quays. This imposing Temple Bar institution is cool and smooth to the point of being even a trifle austere, but it works. With just 50 rooms and splendid retainments of its original Victorian architecture, it’s one of the city’s most indulgent boutique stays.

Despite being a city center hotel and thus having no pool or spa, the hotel does have a partnership with the local Melt Spa , which is a mere two-minute walk from the hotel. Moreover, the service is not stuffy and is a nice blend of Irish informality and polished promptness. Plus, they’re completely plugged into the locality and dole out a wealth of information on everything from things to see to places to eat and drink. A restaurant and bar also welcome non-guests and wrap up the food scene.

That said, the digs are the main focus here, with excellent double glazing, lots of original Irish art, and beautifully modern bathrooms with Paul Costelloe bath products. In fact, the suites even come with Nespresso machines, and many of them have balconies with spectacular Dublin views. While entry-level rooms cost EUR 230 (USD 250), the Penthouse costs a cool EUR 1,100 (USD 1,190). The two-storeyed space boasts a balcony running the hotel’s length and with truly panoramic views. What makes it all the better are the many outdoor sitting areas, a fully fitted kitchen with a chef, and a spiral staircase leading to the upper story, topped by a dramatic cupola.

The stylishly fun and boutique Dylan Hotel is a rare addition to the list of Dublin’s priciest stays. That’s because it isn’t in the city center but rather tucked in a serene and quietly affluent part of the city. So, the surrounding streets are a delight to walk around in, especially since you aren’t too far from the action either.

Coming back to the hotel, it’s part modern extension and part grand Victorian red-brick edifice, thus resulting in an eclectically luxurious setup. The Irish design setup is well complemented by the warm, attentive, and smart service. Guests do have access to the good Aorta gym around the corner, but bibliophiles will practically retreat to the Library with its collection of first editions. A good concierge system aside, the onsite restaurant and bar are excellent, too. While the Eddison restaurant, with sunny verandahs and a ‘moss wall’ living art installation, offers all meals, the intimately warm Dylan bar makes cocktails, wine, and even pastries, light bites, and coffee.

All 72 rooms retain quirky details like branch-shaped bedside lights and oversized misshaped armchairs. Plus, they have mod-cons in the form of smart bathrooms, ‘Good Food Ireland’ hospitality trays, and much-needed Nespresso machines. While the entry-level rooms cost EUR 1,100 (USD 1,190), the Signature Suite, the most expensive, costs EUR 2,000 (USD 2,160). It’s no wonder it’s one of the best hotels in Dublin .

The Conrad Dublin has an enviable location close to two of the city’s most beautiful parks and sits right across from the National Concert Hall. But it’s one of Dublin’s most impressive hotels for more than just its location. The minute you step in, you can see the influences of the dreamy Iveagh Gardens; think of neutral green colo schemes and branch-like light fixtures. Of course, the large echoing atrium with vast floral displays and lots of marble sets the indulgent tone, too.

Again, there’s no pool or spa here, but you don’t feel like you need it. That’s because one side of the Conrad opens onto a wide patio, complete with seating and water features. The super-fast Wi-Fi aside, there’s also a snazzy gym that’s open 24 hours a day. However, the highlight is the impressive Coburg, a sexy brasserie with impeccably delicious food. But that’s not all; the hotel also has The Terrace Kitchen & Social House and Lemuel’s, rounding up the drinking and dining scene nicely.

If you were impressed with the facilities, wait till you see the rooms and suites at this hotel, all of which are calming and muted. Think Nespresso machines, Irish art, woven blankets, and some rooms even had private balconies, which are an absolute rarity in Dublin. Moreover, the luxurious rouches come in the form of intimate services like turndown, which means slippers, dimmed lights, and even Butler’s chocolates on the pillow. Entry-level rooms are one of the least expensive on this list – EUR 370 (USD 400) – but the Presidential Suite spares no expense and costs EUR 2,200 (USD 2,370).

The Fitzwilliam Hotel Dublin has never been one to shy away from pizzazz or color and still stops at nothing to please guests. You’ll be impressed right from the lemongrass-scented airy lobby to the sexy bar tucked away at the back. But you’ll soon realize that its customer spiel isn’t just marketing. For instance, someone from the hotel will call you before your stay to ask how to make your stay better or what you want in your room. It’s the personal touch that makes all the difference.

A friendly and superb staff, all resplendent in magenta and extremely keyed into Dublin’s scene, will make your stay all the better. Other nice touches include a reading nook, complete with a library of books. This is one of those rare Dublin city center hotels that has The Spirit Spa , which offers a wide range of treatments. Aside from the excellent concierge desk and a well-equipped gym, the food scene is the focus here. The main restaurant, Citron, especially has an excellent buffet breakfast, while the gregarious yet cozy bar Inn on the Green has light all-day dining. The star, however, is the pink 1920s dining room Glover’s Alley, complete with a French-inspired menu.

All rooms feature pops of color everywhere, along with luxe bathrooms with Murdock bath products and some even with chartreuse bathtubs. While a few east-facing rooms come with balconies looking across the treetops of St Stephen’s Green, the south-facing ones are equally amazing, overlooking the lush courtyard garden. Entry-level rooms might cost EUR 450 (USD 490), but the costliest is the Presidential Suite, which costs a cool EUR 3,200 (USD 3,450).

Dublin’s Docklands, a.k.a. “Silicon Docks,” is where the European headquarters of all tech bigwigs lie: Airbnb, Google, Facebook, you name it. In the middle of it all sits the sleek, geometric Anantara The Marker Dublin Hotel , the region’s unofficial landmark. You’ll love the hip vibe, right from the subterranean pool to the rooftop bar and lounge space. The hotel might be unabashedly modern, but its inspirations are inherently Irish. While the chequerboard-style exterior is inspired by the Cliffs of Moher, the airy, light-filled lobby evokes images of the Giant’s Causeway, one of Ireland’s most beautiful places .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Anantara The Marker Dublin Hotel (@anantarathemarkerdublin)

The amenities here are different and distinct. For one, it has a gorgeous, moodily lit indoor infinity pool, which is the city’s best, and even has a whirlpool tub and a eucalyptus-scented steam room. After a swim, you can head to the seasonally-open rooftop, complete with a rooftop bar and killer views of Dublin. The brand has always focused on wellness, so it’s not surprising to find the indulgent Anantara Spa on the property. Aside from the free bicycles to explore, the three eating spots, Forbes Street, the Bar & Lounge, and the rooftop lounge with 360-degree views, wrap up the offerings here.

Since the hotel sits slightly outside the city center, even the entry-level rooms, which cost the least on this list – EUR 300 (USD 325) – are extremely spacious. However, at 1,390 sq ft, the Presidential Suite at this hotel is the size of a typical family home in the city. It boasts white Carrera and black Nero Marquina marble bathrooms, Malin+Goetz bath products, a fully stocked bar, turndown service, and a Nespresso machine, all for EUR 3,500 (USD 3770) — only.

The former Four Seasons-turned- InterContinental Dublin is tucked away in the leafy, upscale Ballsbridge district. There are a lot of things that discerning travelers love about this Irish-owned hotel, starting with the fact that the luxury hits you the moment you step inside. Think swaths of gleaming marble, crystal chandeliers, and gold couches with a sprinkling of navy armchairs. In fact, the lobby lounge, which we just described, is the perfect spot to sip on coffee or wine and people- to your heart’s content. Of course, it also offers spectacular views through the Victorian-style conservatory windows of the inner courtyard garden. Sigh.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by InterContinental Dublin (@intercondublin)

The local knowledge of the staff here is excellent, with the concierge even doling out information on jogging/walking jogging trails and even local culture offerings. What’s more, the standout amenity here is the lush and verdant hotel courtyard, complete with a fountain and serene seating areas. For those who want to unwind, the nicely appointed spa with a good gym, pool, indoor pool, and relaxation area is a fantastic choice. Foodies will love the elegant Seasons restaurant, which is all about classic Irish cuisine, including wonderful breakfasts. Rounding things up is the all-day Whiskey Bar and Lobby Lounge for drinks, lunch, and coffee.

Even the entry-level rooms are luxurious with deep-soaking bathtubs in Italian marble bathrooms, silky-soft beds, turndown service, slippers and robes, and elegantly muted gold-and-purple color schemes. While rooms begin at EUR 600 (USD 650), the James Joyce Suite costs a whopping EUR 3,800 (USD 4,100).

It’s hard not to be impressed from the very second that you walk up the grand staircase at The Westbury . This classic Dublin meeting place was designed for milestones and is unbridled Irish luxury at its exemplary finest. Aside from an unrivaled location, the luxurious Westbury offers excellence across the spectrum, along with a beguiling dash of personal touch.

The excellent service throughout is evident, especially since it’s low-key, unobtrusive, and professional. The friendly and smartly uniformed doormen set the scene, which continues with superb concierge service. Since it’s a city center hotel, there’s no spa or pool. However, there’s not only an exercise suite, but also guests have access to the Gym Plus pool and gym nearby for a fee. That said, the most impressive of all is the hotel’s Slice of the City offer, which offers connections to galleries, theatres, museums, and other places across the city. Of course, three excellent restaurants and bars mean that you wouldn’t want to look beyond the hotel to eat and drink. While Wilde, with a terrace and all-day dining, offers an excellent breakfast, drinks are best drunk at the 1930s-style Sidebar bar.

All bright and spacious rooms are tranquil, with marble bathrooms with large bathtubs and heated floors, turndown service, Nespresso machines, Irish crystal glassware, and excellent city views. While entry-level rooms might cost around EUR 480 (USD 520), the Presidential PV Doyle Suite costs a whopping EUR 4,000/night (USD 4,310).

The Shelbourne drips with opulence, and it’s easy to see why. The Grand Dame of Dublin not only played an important part in the 1916 Easter Rising but even hosted Princess Grace of Monaco. In fact, the signature red-brick Victorian structure has sat north of St Stephen’s Green since as far back as 1824. On the inside, gold corniches, huge oil paintings, afternoon tea, and ladies in finery, the Shelby has it all. P.S.: Don’t miss the 32 glorious and spanking-new stained-glass windows representing every Irish county running throughout.

Since it’s a five-star, you can expect all the trappings and trimmings of a five-star here. Think an army of staff comprising everyone from concierges to bellhops and an excellent range of amenities. Not only is there a beauty salon, but there’s also a smart barber shop in the basement. Moreover, the spa area is delightful, with a top-lit pool, a fitness center, treatment areas, and a wonderful relaxation space. Can you believe that it even has park views and cocktails? Yep. Furthermore, four drinking and dining options exist, including the Saddle Room for meals and the Lord Mayor’s Lounge for afternoon teas. You have three bars to choose from: the 1824 Residents’ Bar, Horseshoe, and No. 27, the largest with an all-day menu.

Even standard entry-level rooms, which cost EUR 705 (USD 760), come with all the tech mod-cons, fluffy robes, coffee machines, room and evening turndown services, and sleekly modern marble bathrooms. In fact, some rooms have balconies and superb views of St Stephen’s Green and the mountains in the distance. Of them all, the most spectacular is the two-bedroom Princess Grace Suite, which costs a whopping EUR 7,500/night (USD 8,100)! As the name suggests, the 1,530 sqft presidential suite was once the favorite room of Princess Grace of Monaco and is steeped in historical detail. Think original restored writing tables, French chairs, and an antique dining table.

Sitting at the top of the list is The Merrion , which was created from four 1760s townhouses and boasts a striking façade. But as impressive as that might be, nothing will prepare you for the jaw-dropping interior. The lobby, for instance, boasts top-hatted doormen waiting by marble columns to welcome you to a plush drawing room with a roaring fire. In fact, the hotel boasts a huge private art collection that makes it a timeless treasure of not just Dublin but all of Ireland.

The Merrion boasts truly exceptional levels of service, which is highly courteous and highly efficient but with a rather welcome note of Irish informality. Discerning travelers will love the superb concierge service, who can arrange everything from coveted reservations to cycling tours, complete with Merrion rain macs and picnics.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Merrion Hotel (@merrionhotel)

Most of all, you’ll love the stunning courtyard gardens, which are an absolute rarity in a central Dublin hotel, as well as the tranquil Tethra Spa. In fact, it even has a lovely blue-tiled subterranean pool, along with a full range of massages and body treatments. That said, the food here is exceptional, as the Merrion is home to Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, which is one of Ireland’s only two two-Michelin-starred dining places! Plus, there’s also the Garden Room that’s ensconced in the manicured private garden. Furthermore, there’s also art-themed Afternoon Tea at the Drawing Rooms. Wrapping things up are the snug Number 23 bar and the Cellar Bar, with exposed brick walls and a fantastic cocktail, wine, and beer collection.

All 143 rooms and suites, of which entry-level rooms cost EUR 1,400 (USD 1,510), are decked out in soft greys and blues, luxury-thread linens on plush beds, Nespresso machines, and Carrara marble bathrooms with Asprey bath products. That said, there’s aplenty in the 2,200 sq ft Penthouse Suite, which stretches over 2 floors and has a discrete 1,000 sq ft rooftop terrace, complete with a wooden hot tub. Moreover, the spectacular accommodation boasts private lift access, an open-planing living room with a stone fireplace, and Carrera marble bathrooms with sweeping views of the 18th-century gardens. Did we mention that a room off the second-floor living room can be set up as anything – a gym, a private meeting room, or even digs for your security personnel? Yep. It’s no wonder it costs a heart-stopping EUR 9000/night (USD 9,700)!

There are many excellent five-star hotels preferred by celebrities in Dublin. Beyonce, for instance, has stayed at the Fitzwilliam’s Penthouse. Others include the Merrion and the Intercontinental.

Ballsbridge, just south of Dublin’s city center, is a charming and elegant place, and it is one of the city’s most prestigious and sought-after places to stay. It’s where the Intercontinental Dublin is located.

That would be Merrion, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and the Irish capital’s most luxurious and captivating five-star hotel.

AXA Assistance USA keeps travel insurance simple with gold, silver, and platinum plans. Emergency medical and CFAR are a couple of the options you can expect. Read on to learn more about AXA.

  • Silver, Gold, and Platinum plans available
  • Trip interruption coverage of up to 150% of the trip cost
  • Emergency medical coverage of up to $250,000

AXA Assistance USA is among the best travel insurance companies . It covers the fundamentals of travel insurance, with coverage for trip cancellations, medical expenses, and emergency medical/non-medical evacuation. With three plans, AXA also offers coverage for travelers with various budgets.

It's worth noting that many important add-ons aren't available for AXA's cheapest Silver plan, such as pre-existing condition coverage, rental car add-ons, and Schengen travel insurance. Cancel for any reason coverage is also only available for AXA's most expensive Platinum plan.

Coverage Options Offered by AXA

AXA Assistance USA offers three levels of coverage: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each plan comes with different protections and varying coverage limits, with the Silver being the most basic option and Platinum offering the most premium coverage.

Some policies might even include added coverage free of charge, such as a waiver for pre-existing conditions , which is free for Gold and Platinum plans as long as you purchase your plan within 14 days of your trip deposit.

Specialized Coverage Options

The plan you purchase will determine which add-ons are available. For example, those with a Platinum plan can add CFAR (cancel for any reason) coverage , allowing you to receive a full refund if you cancel your trip within 14 days of making the initial deposit.

Or, if you want extra protection for your rental car, depending on your AXA plan, you might be able to add a collision damage waiver (CDW). Policyholders with Gold plans can add $35,000 CDW, and those with Platinum plans can include $50,000 CDW.

If you're traveling within the Schengen Territory, which is made up of 27 European countries, you may eligible for Schengen Travel Insurance, which covers you in all 27 countries. This option is only available for Gold and Platinum travelers and coverage lasts up to 90 days.

AXA Assistance USA Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for the plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate AXA's coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  AXA travel insurance quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $83
  • AXA Gold: $107
  • AXA Platinum: $127

Premiums for AXA plans are between 2.7% and 4.2% of the trip's cost, well below the average cost of travel insurance. It's also relatively cheap compared to many of its competitors

AXA provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • AXA Silver: $109
  • AXA Gold: $128
  • AXA Platinum: $153

Once again, premiums forAXA plans are between 3.6% and 3.8%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following AXA quotes:

  • AXA Silver: $392
  • AXA Gold: $462
  • AXA Platinum: $550

Premiums for AXA plans are between 6.5% and 9.2%, which is roughly in line with the average cost for travel insurance. This is to be expected, as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

How to Purchase and Manage Your AXA Policy

The process of purchasing an AXA policy is simple. After obtaining your quote, you'll need to decide which of AXA's three plans you want to buy. When you pay for your plan, be prepared to provide additional personal information, like your birthday, phone number, and address.

Once you finalize your purchase, you'll have a 10-day free look period, in which you can cancel your policy and get your money back.

How to File a Claim with AXA Travel Insurance

To file a claim with AXA Assistance USA, head to the claims forms online to find the appropriate form. Once you've filled out your form and gathered the required documentation, you can email them to [email protected] or send them by mail to:

If you need assistance when filing claims, AXA's claims office can be reached at 1-888-957-5015 (within the U.S.) and 1-727-450-8794 (outside the U.S.). Office hours are 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ET on Thursdays and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ET on all other weekdays.

AXA's U.S. branch has few reviews on Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau — just over 20 between the two sites. Its UK branch has over 1,100 reviews, most of which are overwhelmingly negative. However, the quality of AXA Travel Insurance UK isn't necessarily indicative of its U.S. coverage.

In fact, on SquareMouth, where the majority of AXA U.S.'s reviews, reviews are generally positive. It received an average of 4.22 stars out of five across over 900 reviews. Customers reported that adjusting an AXA policy was easy and the customer service team was responsive. However, reviews on the claims process was more mixed, with spotty communication and long wait times.

AXA Assistance USA vs. AIG Travel Guard

When comparing AXA to Travel Guard , we'll look at the coverage levels from their mid-tier plans, the Silver plan and Travel Guard Preferred plan, respectively.

With Travel Guard Preferred plan, you'll get:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $150,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $225,000
  • Emergency medical coverage of $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft, or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage of up to $800

Comparing those Travel Guard coverages with AXA's Silver plan, you'll see that AXA's coverage limits are a bit higher. With AXA's Silver plan you'll get $100,000 in emergency medical coverage, for example. And the baggage loss coverage limit is up to $1,500.

If you're looking for greater coverage limits, AXA makes the most sense in this scenario. But premiums will also vary based on factors like the traveler's age, trip destination, and trip cost. So you'll have to run your own numbers to make a final decision.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance provides single-trip and multi-trip insurance for travelers who want to go abroad for an extended period of time. And, like with all insurance, the various plans have varying degrees of coverage.

Allianz Travel Insurance's most popular single-trip option is the OneTrip Prime plan, which offers:

  • Trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000
  • Trip interruption coverage up to $150,000
  • Emergency medical coverage for $50,000
  • Coverage for baggage loss, theft or damage up to $1,000
  • Travel delay coverage up to $800

Looking at AXA's mid-tier Silver plan, you'll see that, again, AXA offers more coverage for emergency medical and baggage loss, theft, or damage than Allianz Travel Insurance. That said, if cost is an essential factor for you, you'll have to get quotes using your personal trip information to make an informed decision.

AXA Assistance USA vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

Already have a great travel credit card, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or American Express Platinum? Some of the standard coverages, such as rental car insurance, may be included in the card you already have. It's a good idea to research the terms of your credit card's travel protection before purchasing a separate travel insurance policy.

If you're driving to your destination and don't have any non-refundable trip expenses, the coverage from your credit card may be enough. Another time it might work is if you have health insurance covering you while abroad and you're in good health without worrying about possible medical costs.

It's essential to remember that credit card coverage is usually secondary. This means you'll have to file a claim with the other applicable insurance before filing a claim with your credit card company.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed AXA Assistance USA

We researched AXA by evaluating its travel insurance plans compared to other plans from the top travel insurance companies. The aspects we looked at included, but were not limited to, different coverage options, claims limits, what is covered, available add-ons, and extra services for policy holders.

What's important when choosing a policy isn't just the price — it's making sure you're getting adequate coverage that meets your needs without breaking the bank. Filing a claim should also be easy and stress-free if you ever have to use your policy.

AXA Assistance USA FAQs

If you're diagnosed with COVID-19 before a trip and need to cancel, AXA may cover your expenses. Additionally, a COVID-19 diagnosis during a trip may be covered under AXA's medical expense, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits. Be sure to review your policy to ensure coverage details.

While you may extend your coverage in certain circumstances, such as extended hospitalization, and update your travel dates prior to your departure, you can't extend AXA travel insurance plans while you're traveling.

AXA's Gold and Platinum plan cover pre-existing medical conditions as long as you purchase your policy within 14 days of your initial trip deposit. AXA's Silver plan does not cover pre-existing conditions and has a 60-day look-back period.

You can download AXA claims forms on its website and email them to [email protected].

AXA isn't the most flexible travel insurance company and isn't great at specializing, but it offers comprehensive general coverage. Its prices aren't significantly more expensive or cheaper than its competitors.
