Advice for Australians traveling abroad

According with Australian government the following advice are to be followed:

Before you go

  • Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel.
  • Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
  • See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
  • Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
  • Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
  • If you’ll drive overseas check out the local traffic laws and practices. You’re likely to need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well as your Australian driver’s license.
  • Share your itinerary with friends or family members. Give them copies of your passport

Travel insurance

Holidays don't always go as planned. If you're going overseas, travel insurance is as important as a passport. Without it, you or your family could suffer financially if things go wrong. No matter who you are, where you're going and what you're doing, get insurance.

Travel insurance is especially important if you need medical assistance. Healthcare overseas can be very expensive. Most countries won't give you free care, or subsidies the cost of your care. You, or your insurer, must usually pay full price.

Travel Advice for Australians visiting Romania

Keep your personal belongings close. Lock hotel and train compartment doors from the inside.

Drink spiking is an issue, especially in Bucharest's Old Town. Don't accept food, drinks, gum or cigarettes from people you've just met.

Dating and marriage scams occur.

Only use ATM's in banks, shops and shopping centers, especially at night. Always keep your credit card in sight. Be wary of people you've met online.

Penalties for drug offences are severe. They can include jail sentences of up to 20 years.

By law, you must always carry photo ID. Keep your passport in a safe place. Carry a photocopy.

It's illegal to take photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations.

It's illegal to engage in sex work or have sexual relations with a person under 18.

Same-sex relationships are legal in Romania, but not widely accepted.

Local contacts

The Australian Consulate in Bucharest provides limited consular and passport assistance.

You can get full consular help from the Australian Embassy in Athens.

After breakfast, we will leave Bicaz Canyon, one of the main climbing sites in Romania. Our destination is another great attraction in Romania – the superb Saint Ana Lake - located at the bottom of the crater of an extinct volcano called Ciomatu Mare, from the Puciosu volcanic Massif, at an altitude of 946 meters. We will stop at Bâlea Lake , a glacial lake located at an altitude of 2034 meters. The scenery is gorgeous, the road has a multitude of tight curves alternating with wide turns. Get ready to meet several families of teddy bears that usually stay on the side of the road. The end of the day will find us at Vidraru Lake, where we will spend the night.

Objectives : Vidraru Lake – Transalpina – Alba Iulia

The objective of the day is undoubtedly Transalpina Road , the highest road in Romania, having the highest point in Urdele Pass at 2,145 meters. The story of Transalpina Road began more than 100 years ago, and there is no motorcyclist who would not like to ride here at least once.

We will stop overnight in Alba-Iulia, an ancient city dating back to the Roman period when it was called Apullum. Being an important tourist place, the city is always visited by tourists from all over Europe.

Objectives : Alba Iulia – Sighișoara – Turda – Cluj-Napoca.

Romania to Istanbul Adventure

At the Crossroads - An adventure ride through the Balkans with Adriatic Moto Tours

Romania to Istanbul Adventure with Adriatic Moto Tours

Trying to summarize a 14-day motorcycle tour through Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, with all of the roads and meals and people and historic sites that it entailed, in about 1,000 words is like trying to stuff 10 pounds of rice into a 5-pound sack. Adriatic Moto Tours ’ Romania to Istanbul Adventure tour lived up to its name, providing a dozen of us — four Australians and eight Americans — with a rich experience in a very interesting and beautiful part of the world.

Our tour began in Bucharest, Romania, and followed a counterclockwise loop with overnight stops in charming towns and rest days in Sibiu, Romania, and Istanbul, Turkey.

Romania to Istanbul Adventure with Adriatic Moto Tours

Before our trip, Adriatic Moto Tours (AMT) sent us a detailed tour guide book and a map, and they made our hotel arrangements in Bucharest and picked us up at the airport. All my wife Becky and I had to do was pack our gear and make sure we made our flight. Orientation, bike assignments and everything was stress-free, and after our first dinner together our group was acquainted, bonded and ready to ride.

RELATED: Adriatic Moto Tours’ Intriguing Southeast Europe Tour

Rok was our motorcycle guide and Primož was our support van driver and evening host. From Burcharest we made our way to Târgovişte, where we enjoyed coffee and fresh pastries at a café adjacent to an imposing 15th century fortress. Vlad Dracula, also known as Vlad the Impaler and the inspiration for the vampire Dracula, fought bloody battles here. Primož told us that Vlad once invited hundreds of guests to a banquet, then had them all killed and impaled.

Romania to Istanbul Adventure with Adriatic Moto Tours

On that cheery note, we rode north toward Câmpulung into delightful mountains, with rocky peaks in the background and gorgeous green pastoral scenery below. This stretch was winding and curvy but smooth and pleasant. There are many beautiful places in the world, all different, but there aren’t many that are more beautiful than this section of Romania’s Carpathian Mountains. We visited Bran Castle, which was built in the 13th century and inspired Bram Stoker’s description of the vampire’s castle in “Dracula.” On the way to dinner that night, Primož led us on a walking tour of the old city in Braşov. Each night we walked to a wonderful restaurant, and the guides shared their wealth of knowledge about the culture and history of the area. Dinners were family-style, with Rok and Primož ordering a variety of platters so we could sample a little bit of everything.

Romania to Istanbul Adventure with Adriatic Moto Tours

Our route continued through Transylvania on smooth roads through rolling hills, the terrain and scenery constantly changing. We had lunch in Sighişoara, a walled 12th century town that’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. For our “rest” day in Sibiu, we did what riders do — we got up early and headed out on a ride, in this case to the renowned Transfăgărăşan road over the Făgărăş range. At the base of the mountain, Rok gave the signal and the group broke apart with everyone riding their own pace up the steep twisty switchbacks to the pass at 6,699 feet. The next day, after finding out that a rockslide had closed the highly anticipated Transalpina Road, we assuaged our disappointment with another run on the Transfăgărăşan.

Romania to Istanbul Adventure with Adriatic Moto Tours

We crossed the Friendship Bridge into Bulgaria and made our way to Veliko Tarnovo, where we spent the night in the Tsarevets Fortress. We visited the Shipka Monument at a 3,900-foot mountain pass that was the site of battles during the Russo-Turkish War in the late 1800s. And we descended into Rose Valley, where much of the world’s rose oil for perfumes comes from, and passed sunflower fields that stretched as far as the eye could see.

After a night in Plovdiv, which has Roman ruins in the center of town, we rode through the Rhodope Mountains into Greece. Most of the road had excellent pavement, smooth curves and gorgeous mountain terrain that gave way to Mediterranean seaside scenery at Alexandroupoli. The next day we crossed into Turkey, and a perfect arc of roadway around the Gulf of Saros took us to tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula, where we visited WWI memorials.

Romania to Istanbul Adventure with Adriatic Moto Tours

Istanbul is beyond words. As the crossroads of the East and West, it has a rich, varied history and a unique mix of cultures. Three nights and two rest days in Istanbul allowed plenty of time to explore and see famous sites like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome of Constantinople. People on the streets and in shops were warm and friendly, and the variety of foods was endless and always delicious. Our hotel provided easy access to historic areas, and its rooftop restaurant and bar overlooked the Bosphorus Strait, which is the boundary between Europe and Asia. Just indescribable — you really should experience it for yourself.

After the sensory overload of Istanbul, we followed Rok northwest to our lunch stop at Saray. The roads zigged and zagged, and the surface was somewhat rough due to years of being patched. We crossed the border back into Bulgaria, and at the checkpoint there were several luxury vehicles shot full of hundreds of holes. If that was meant as a warning, it worked. Nessebar, situated on a rocky peninsula jutting into the Black Sea, was our stop for the night. It’s one of the oldest towns in Europe, and as we walked to dinner we saw monuments and ruins dating back to the 5th century. The atmosphere in the twilight was breathtaking, another step back in time.

Romania to Istanbul Adventure with Adriatic Moto Tours

The terrain and scenery changed yet again as we rode north along the Bulgarian coast, which is a popular vacation destination with dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches and resort hotels. After a night in Kavarna, where we stayed in a modern condo overlooking the Black Sea, we rode through fertile grain-producing agricultural areas. We crossed back into Romania on a ferry over the mighty Danube River and made our way back to Bucharest, where Primož greeted us with champagne at the hotel. After celebrating, we emptied the bikes and got cleaned up for the farewell dinner. I don’t remember much about that final night. Our heads were spinning with memories, laughter and a few adult beverages.

This tour was everything we could have imagined, multiplied by a factor of 10. Both guides worked tirelessly to accommodate us every day for 14 long days. The riding was great, the scenery ever-changing, the history and culture beyond what we could absorb in a lifetime, and Adriatic Moto Tours earned our highest regards for everything from the booking to the final hoorah. Maybe we can go again someday?

Arrival to Bucharest

Your guides will welcome you at the airport and take you to the hotel in Bucharest. If you arrive early, you'll have some time to relax or do some sightseeing before the welcome briefing. Bucharest is definitely worth seeing. Due to city's elegant architecture, it was once known as the "Paris of the East." Major highlights include Old Princely Court, Parliament's Palace, Stavropoleos Church and many more. At 4 PM we'll meet for an introductory briefing. Welcome dinner will be held in a fine restaurant where traditional Romanian cuisine is complemented by lively Romanian folk music.

moto tour romania

Bucharest – Brasov

Today our motorcycle adventure begins. First, we will head north through the Bucegi Mountains towards Peleș Castle, a masterpiece of German new Renaissance architecture, considered by many as one of the most impressive castles in Europe. The symbol of Transylvania, Bran Castle, is next. Surrounded by an aura of mystery and legend, Bran Castle owes its fame to the myth created around Bram Stoker's Dracula. We will end today's ride in the city of Brasov, bordered by the peaks of the southern Carpathian Mountains and resplendent with Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance architecture

moto tour romania

Brasov – Sibiu

Our ride will be shorter but enjoyable as we will take small country roads and ride through the heart of Romania. Arriving early, we will have time to explore and relax in Sighisoara, a perfectly intact 15th century gem with nine towers, narrow passageways and cobbled streets. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sighisoara is also the birthplace of Vlad Dracula, nicknamed Vlad the Impaler. It was Vlad who inspired Bram Stoker's fictional creation, Count Dracula. In the afternoon, we'll head towards Sibiu, European Capital of Culture in 2007.

moto tour romania

Rest day in Sibiu

Sibiu was the largest and wealthiest of the seven walled citadels built in the 12th century by German settlers known as Transylvanian Saxons. Sections of the medieval wall still guard the historic area, where narrow streets pass steep-roofed 17th century buildings with gabled overhangs. Before relaxing, the thrilling Transfagarasan Road awaits. The route climbs up to an altitude of 2.034 meters and links Transylvania with its neighboring province, Muntenia. Passing through dramatic scenery it offers spectacular views, particularly of the highest peak in Romania, Moldoveanu.

moto tour romania

Sibiu - Pitesti

Looking back, the passage was already built by Romans in 2nd Century AD, to conquer Dacia, area of modern Romania. The road was built and paved in 1930 under King Carol II. It is therefore known as The King's Road ("Drumul Regelui"). Highest point is 2.145 m above sea level and offers formidable views over the surrounding valleys and mountain peaks. We will end our day in Pitesti visiting famous Pitesti prison, well known for its experimental brainwashing techniques

moto tour romania

Pitesti - Veliko Tarnovo

This region is a producer of some of Romania's best red wines. Leaving Romania behind we'll ferry across the great Danube and enter Bulgaria. Veliko Tarnovo, the evocative capital of the medieval Bulgarian tsars, is our stop for the night. Veliko Tarnovo is dramatically set amidst an amphitheatre of forested hills, divided by the ribboning Yantra River. Commanding pride of place is the magisterial, well-restored Tsarevets Fortress, citadel of the Second Bulgarian Empire.

moto tour romania

Veliko Tarnovo - Plovdiv

Today we are up for some mountainous riding. For dramatic and majestic vistas, few routes in Bulgaria match crossing Shipka Pass. We'll stop in Koprivshtitsa, a unique village filled with Bulgarian National Revival-period architecture, cobblestone streets and and bridges. By the end of the day we reach Plovdiv, vibrant city with innumerable art galleries, exuberant spirit and great nightlife. Many Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and Bulgarian antiquities can be found in Plovdiv's old town, the most being the Roman amphitheatres – the best preserved in the Balkans.

moto tour romania

Rest day in Plovdiv

This most popular destination in the region is a city described during Thracian times as "the biggest and most beautiful town in all of Thrace." Gorgeous Plovdiv still is the jewel in Bulgaria's crown, with a long and varied history.

moto tour romania

Plovdiv - Alexandroupoli

It will be a fast ride with beautiful scenery as we'll be riding into Greece. Before entering Turkey the next day, we'll spend a night in Alexandroupoli.

moto tour romania

Alexandroupoli - Gallipoli

With 31 war cemeteries as the great remains of the Gallipoli Campaign during the World War I, where Turkish and Allied Australian and New Zealand soldiers are buried side by side. The peninsula is surrounded by the Aegean sea on the west side and the Dardanelles straits on the east. "Gallipoli" derives from the Greek "Kallipolis," meaning "Beautiful city."

moto tour romania

Gallipoli - Istanbul

We continue our way on the north shore of the Marmara Sea, passing small fishing villages, often neglected by foreign tourists. Heading toward today's destination, some nice scenery and fairly easy riding awaits before meeting the mystic Istanbul.

moto tour romania

Rest day in Istanbul

For nearly sixteen centuries following its reestablishment as Constantinople, it served as the capital of four empires: the Roman, Byzantine, Latin and Ottoman Empires. On our first rest day we'll visit the historic center, the famous church turned into a mosque, Aya Sofya, the amazing residence of sultans, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, and many more. What a city!!!

moto tour romania

You can explore the wonderfully colored Grand Bazar, sip Turkish coffee or çay (tea) in the local coffee shops while observing the street buzz' or simply relax in the baths of hamam. Make sure not to miss the whirling dervish show or the attractive belly dancers. But most of all, put your taste buds on alert - the food and the Turkish delights are amazing.

moto tour romania

Istanbul - Nesebar

We'll be riding through Strandzha Mountains, passing some ancient cities and admiring the nature diversity, being surrounded by the lakes, forests and sea. On the way to Nesebar we can explore the swaths of stunning beaches and picturesque bays of Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Nesebar's most distinctive features are the cobblestone streets, the well- preserved medieval churches and the timbered houses dating back to the 19th century. Soak in the unique combination of Bulgaria's ancient culture and modern life, or hop on the sandy beach.

moto tour romania

Nesebar - Bucharest

Today we leave the Black Sea Coast behind and head back to Bucharest, hopefully arriving with just enough time to let you walk around the city before our farewell dinner.
