Details about this scheduled guided day tour:

By bus you will depart from the village of Geiranger and drive uphill through numerous hairpin bends. The first stop is at Flydalsjuvet, an amazing place to look out over UNESCO’s Geirangerfjord. After a short stop, the bus will take you all the way up the famous Mount Dalsnibba, to the Geiranger Skywalk, approximately 1500 meters above sea level. Once more you will be able to enjoy a jaw droppingly beautiful view over Geiranger and the Geirangerfjord. The excursion continues to Djupvatnet, a mountain lake which lies at approximately 1000 meters above sea level, where you can take some more pictures.

Before heading back to pier, you will experience the Eagle Road, a spectacular road with 11 hairpin bends. On the steep sides of the road you might spot goats grazing grass. Once you arrive at the last hairpin bend, the bus will stop for a break. You can walk to the platform for another majestic view over a.o. the Geirangerfjord and the waterfall “Seven Sisters”.

NB: In the month of May, the road to Mount Dalsnibba may still be closed (snow and risk of avalanches). Should the road be closed on the day of your visit, our stop there will be replaced with a visit to another beautiful place. Rest assured that this will not lessen the duration or the quality of the tour.

Your coach climbs the winding mountain road from Geiranger and up the hairpin bend road to the summit of Mt Dalsnibba . Here, you will take in the incomparable views of Geirangerfjord -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site . With each turn in the road, the panorama unfolds -- mountains and forests, streams and tiny towns clinging bravely to the steep hillsides.

The Norwegian Fjord Center seen from above resembles a spearhead pointing to the fjord. The design was well chosen since 'geir' means 'to point'. At the Fjord Farms exhibit, you might believe you've been transported back in time 100 years as you encounter the challenges and dangers facing rural dwellers here in Norway. The Avalanche Experience exposes these massive forces of nature that obliterate everything in their path. Fjord Communication represents the fjord boats and the quayside milieu. The Geiranger Road Experience shows the building of the Geiranger road.

Walk down the hill back to the pier (15 minutes) past the octagonal Geiranger church, or return to the ship by coach.

In Spring (April & May), some viewpoints or attractions are inaccessible due to snow, causing roads to remain closed; this varies greatly from season to season. An alternative viewpoint or attraction may be substituted. The onboard Shore Excursions team will provide the latest details approximately 48 hours prior to the call at Geiranger. The Mount Dalsnibba road may close at short notice in adverse weather conditions. Views are weather-dependent.

Day Trips from Geiranger

If you stay in Geiranger, continue on a day trip by car or a tour to Trollstigen to enjoy the exciting switchbacks on the Troll Road and then experience the shear cliff edge of the Troll Wall. The Troll Road is part of the Geiranger in a Nutshell circuit too.

Take the one hour ferry ride from Geiranger and Hellesylt . Enjoy the waterfall right at the ferry dock. Return the same way or make a circle trip through Olden on a full day adventure.

Avid hikers will ensure the Storsæterfossen Waterfall trail, with its steep trail edges and a route behind the waterfall.

Get to Geiranger

Most visitors arrive in Geiranger by cruise ship during the brief Norwegian summer. On cruise ship days, the tourists far out number the local population.

Other ways to get to Geiranger include:

  • Geiranger in a Nutshell covers a circuit between Alesund, Geiranger and Andalsnes.
  • Take a Hurtigruten Coastal Cruise , as they take a side trip from Alesund to Geirangerfjord during the summer months (June – September).
  • Drive or train from Oslo on the Dovrebanen Railway to Dombas. Continue from Dombas on the Raumabanen Railway to Andalsnes. In summer, bus from Andalsnes to Geiranger on Route #63 over the Troll Road.
  • Travel 7 hours by car from Bergen to Geiranger. Spend time at Olden on the way.

Geiranger Weather

The long days of the Norwegian summer from May to September are the best time to visit Geiranger. Geiranger weather never gets very warm though, because its so far north. July and August are the warmest months with average highs of 68 F (20 C) and average lows of 54 F (12 C).

In the winter months from December – February, average highs are 40 F (5 C) and average lows are at the freezing mark. Rainfall levels are lower from May to July, however you can expect a 60% chance of cloud cover year round in Norway. Many attractions are closed for the off season after the summer tourists leave. The passes through Dalsnibba and the Troll Road don’t open until late May each year and they close in early November.

Visit Geiranger – Background

Geiranger is a small village 60 miles east of Alesund on the Geiranjgerfjord, which is an arm of the Storfjord. Geiranger became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 and has become one of Norway’s most popular fjord destinations. The Geiranger Fjord is about 2,000 feet deep and the mountains at the edges of the fjord rise to 6,500 feet.

Hellesylt, Geiranger & Mount Dalsnibba With P&O Iona Norwegian Fjords Cruise

Before our cruise in August 2022, Iona would dock at Geiranger – a famous port which is one of the highlights of the cruise.

However, I believe that because Iona is right at the upper limit of size of ship the Geiranger port can accommodate, this port of call had to be switched for nearby Hellesylt, which is easier to get to and with less risk of the port being missed completely.

Hellesylt is still a beautiful port, but perhaps not quite as picturesque as Geiranger, which is just around the corner – but out of sight unless you take an excursion there.

P&O had told us they’d swapped Geiranger for Hellesylt before we travelled and – having heard how popular Gerainger is, we decided to book an excursion that would take us there.

mount dalsnibba summit tour

This was the only official P&O excursion we booked – the others we organised ourselves independently, but as getting to Gerainger from Hellesylt is a bit more complicated, we decided not to risk finding our own way, and booked up a combined boat trip to Gerainger with a coach trip to the top of Mount Dalsnibba – the highest point in the region.

There had been some doubt as to whether we’d even make it into Hellesylt – the captain announcing the evening before that bad weather may prevent us entering the fjord, and that we should be prepared to wake up in an alternative port entirely.

So we were pleased to open our balcony curtains that morning to see the stunning sight of the roaring waterfall that’s the centrepiece of the port at Hellesylt.

Disembarking just after breakfast, it was easy to find the boat that would provide the first part of our journey through the fjord to Gerainger, and we spent time up on the deck taking more photos of the incredible surroundings.

The boat trip from Hellesylt to Geiranger took about 45 minutes and passed through some of the most stunning scenery we’ve ever seen.

mount dalsnibba summit tour

The highlight is the ‘Seven Sisters’ waterfall, on the approach to Geiranger – seven waterfalls side-by-side, cascading down from above us into the fjord.

Just the boat trip itself would’ve been worth the money for this excursion but, once we’d docked in Geiranger, we had a coach trip to the very top of the highest mountain in the region.

The coach was waiting for us as soon as we got off the boat.

Some of the P&O passengers were doing other Geiranger excursions just around the small town, but those who were headed up the mountain boarded the coach, to be welcomed by a very friendly tour guide named Karl.

The coach worked its way up a very narrow, winding road up and away from Geiranger port, taking in some amazing views of the fjord as it did so.

The whole way, the guide Karl gave a commentary, with little stories about the local sights, which was entertaining and amusing the whole way.

If you suffer travel sickness, be prepared – especially if you’re near the back of the coach, that this journey is likely to trigger that off – as it’s such a windy road with so many hairpin bends.

I’d taken some travel sickness pills as a preventative measure and was glad I did. A little girl on the coach wasn’t so fortunate!

mount dalsnibba summit tour

There’s a stopping point half way up the mountain with beautiful views back down to Geiranger below and the fjord beyond – but, on this occasion, the driver decided we’d skip that and head straight for the summit of Mount Dalsnibba, because it was clear of cloud at the time, which is a rare occurrence.

After about 45-minutes on the coach, we arrived at the very top of Dalsnibba, where there’s car park, a cafe / gift-shop and various viewing platforms to enjoy some of the best views the Norwegian Fjords have to offer.

However, as has apparently happened on almost every single other excursion here for the last few months, by the time we arrived, cloud had moved in and completely shrouded the mountain top, giving us a view of little more than a load of grey fog.

mount dalsnibba summit tour

And along with the cloud, some absolutely lashing rain and howling winds which made staying outside at the viewpoint virtually impossible.

This is the only downside of a cruise and excursions here in Norway – that the weather can play such a prominent part in whether you get to see or do what you originally planned.

That said though, we didn’t feel it ruined this excursion at all.

It would’ve been great to see the full view of Geiranger and the fjord, but actually the views on the way up there were still well worth making the trip for.

We sheltered in the shop for a while before running back to the coach, which took us back down – stopping at the viewpoint that we skipped on the way up.

When we eventually arrived back at Geiranger, there was a bit of time left to look around the port and its shops before the boat arrived to take us back to Iona.

mount dalsnibba summit tour

The rain cleared by this time and the boat trip back was equally as enjoyable as the ride there.

Like I said before, just the boat ride through this amazing fjord would be worth the money on its own.

If you’re docking at Hellesylt on Iona, it is really very well worth making an excursion around to Geiranger.

mount dalsnibba summit tour

Hellesylt is beautiful but Geiranger and the fjord surrounding it is even better.

What’s more, it turns out these towns only have a limited amount of time left in existence before a gigantic tsunami inevitably destroys them completely (Google the Geiranger ‘wave’ and the film the depicts what will be this region’s inevitable demise!)

We were back on board Iona in time for lunch and an enjoyable afternoon of more relaxation on the ship, before a surprise treat – particularly for those who hadn’t been fortunate enough to get to Geiranger and see the surroundings and the Seven Sisters waterfalls.

mount dalsnibba summit tour

When we departed, Iona sailed up the fjord towards the Seven Sisters, performing a 360-degree turn in the middle of the fjord so everyone on the ship got an incredible panoramic view of the Seven Sisters and the approach to Geiranger.

We happened to be at the Crows Nest bar at this point, which is the bar on the ship with the best all-round panoramic view right at the top and front of Iona.

It was almost a surreal experience seeing this scenery unfolding in front of us through the huge floor-to-ceiling windows of the Crows Nest bar, enjoying the view from the comfort of a big arm chair with a cocktail and a pianist playing live in the background.

This day, and the whole place – Hellesylt, Geiranger and the route up to Mount Dalsnibba – were all an unforgettable experience.

After 1500m of eBike fun you will come to the summit of Mt Dalsnibba / Skywalk platform . Here you can look down over the majestic Geiranger fjord and the road you have just cycled up. This is an excellent chance for you to see the best highlights that nature has to offer in this spectacular area. Included: ebike, helmet, vest Period June to October Total Return Distance : 42km Tour Level: Long trip Duration: Allow 3 hours up and an hour for the descent Price :   Adult: 520,- NOK ( 4 hour ebike rental)

This trip requires you to manage your battery reserves.  If you are cycling towards Dalsnibba with maximum power on the electric motor, you will be running short of battery capacity before you reach the top. We recommend you can set less power on the motor assistance level especially on the flatter sections of the road. This means you will be pushing a little more on the pedals. It is also important to use an easy gear so that the motor has a chance to work most efficiently.
