MSIG TravelEasy Pre-Ex Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know

MSIG is one of the three insurers in Singapore offering travel insurance plans that provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. MSIG's TravelEasy and its Pre-Ex add-on plan offer three plans to choose from: Standard, Elite and Premier. In most cases, MSIG's Pre-Ex plans are cheaper than other pre-existing plans on the market by 5-15%. Considering that pre-existing conditions can be expensive to manage, MSIG's pricing can be a welcome change for the financially-burdened traveller who is used to paying high premiums for their condition. This is in contrast to MSIG's base TravelEasy option, which, with the exception annual ASEAN plans, is not as competitively priced.

This graph compares the price of all the major travel insurance policies in Singapore for a 1-week trip in the ASEAN region in order to help consumers find the cheapest travel insurance for their trip.

The TravelEasy Pre-Ex plan includes almost all of the benefits (except COVID-19 coverage) of the TravelEasy plan along with medical coverage for pre-existing conditions. Its medical coverage ranges from S$75,000 for the Standard plan to S$150,000 for the Premier plan, which is around the average compared to the market coverage for pre-existing medical conditions. Trip incovenience benefits are similarly around market average. However, MSIG's TravelEasy plans offer some notable perks in their coverage that are rarely seen all together in other plans. This includes golf and adventure sports coverage and peace of mind benefits like wedding items coverage, passive war medical coverage, terrorism cover, pet care coverage and FDW belongings coverage. However, most of these perks are offered only for the Premier and Elite plan, pricing out those who are looking for budget plans.

There are a couple of drawbacks of the Pre-Ex plans that consumers should be aware of. Firstly, for customers of the Pre-Ex plan, the maximum trip length you can take and still receive coverage is 30 days, so travellers with pre-existing conditions who take long-haul trips may not get enough coverage. Secondly, pre-existing conditions won't be covered if they worsen within 30 days of the departure date and the doctor prescribes further treatment, medication or surgery. Lastly, you will not be able to file a claim for trip inconvenience benefits, such as trip cancellations, due to pre-existing conditions. For consumers looking for trip inconvenience coverage that includes their pre-existing conditions can consider NTUC Income's Enhanced Pre-Ex Plan instead.

MSIG TravelEasy Travel Insurance: For COVID-19 Coverage

If you are looking for a travel insurance plan that is more focused on offering coverage for expenses related to COVID-19 rather than pre-existing conditions, MSIG's TravelEasy insurance plan might be a better option for you. Although MSIG's TravelEasy doesn't provide any coverage for pre-existing conditions, it has one of the most holistic coverage for COVID-19 related trip complications that might prove more useful to some people during the tail's end of this pandemic.

Do ensure that you've taken all of the necessary precautions to adhere to local and international governments' regulations related to COVID-19 and your travels.

You are covered for adventurous activity including bungee jumping, skydiving, paragliding, hot air ballooning, jet skiing, white water rafting, diving and general snow sports (skiing, snowboarding). There is also decent golf coverage for equipment, unused green fees, and hole-in-one. However, you will only get the adventure cover and golf cover for Elite and Premier plans.

MSIG has standard medical and trip/baggage related exclusions. You can't claim for terminal illnesses, mental disorders, pregnancy related expenses that aren't covered by the maternity illness benefit and you can't file any claims if you are travelling for medical purposes. Additionally you will not be covered if you are travelling to compete in professional sports, will do any kind of manual work or will be going on expeditions. You should always double check the policy wording to make sure you know exactly what events you will be covered for.

To submit a claim with MSIG, you can either submit the claim online or download and mail the claim form. For both options you need to have all the appropriate documentation. If you are claiming for loss or damaged items, you have to make a police report within 24 hours of the event and request a copy for your claim submission.

MSIG Travel Insurance Review: Premiums and Coverage

msig travel insurance singapore

  • Covers adventurous activities/golfing trips/wedding clothing & accessories
  • Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions available
  • Affordable with ample coverage
  • Mid and high-tier plans offer wide coverage for families
  • Standard plan excludes many sub-categories of benefits
  • Lost loyalty points are not claimable
  • Does not cover extreme sports
  • TravelEasy Pre-Ex plan does not include Covid-19 coverage

MSIG’s TravelEasy is one of the more popular travel insurance plans in Singapore.

For starters, it’s one of the rare plans that offers coverage for pre-existing conditions. Given that these can span anything from asthma and eczema to cancer, being insured in the event of a flare-up can be a godsend for travellers.

Still, they’re not the only provider offering this, and you want to make sure that MSIG really does have adequate coverage.

Today, we’ll review the MSIG TravelEasy Insurance Plan and give our verdict based on:

  • MSIG TravelEasy vs TravelEasy Pre-Ex
  • Pricing and coverage
  • Drawbacks of the pre-ex plan
  • How TravelEasy compares to other plans in the market
  • Whom MSIG TravelEasy is best for

Brief Overview of MSIG TravelEasy & TravelEasy Pre-Ex

Eligibility requirements.

Eligibility requirements for both plans are easy to meet.

All persons residing in Singapore aged 1 month and above can apply. (If you’re a foreigner, you need a valid employment pass or work permit.)

TravelEasy Coverage & Notable Features

MSIG’s flagship travel insurance plan automatically includes COVID-19 coverage. In addition, they cover:

  • Up to $1,000,000 of overseas medical expenses
  • Up to $600 in TCM expenses
  • Up to $15,000 in trip cancellation coverage
  • Up to $7,500 in lost or damaged baggage, including $1,000 for a laptop and $500 for each other item

Some of the more notable features of this policy include:

  • Coverage for wedding items, including rings, bridal and ceremonial attire, and accessories
  • Adventurous activity coverage (e.g. bungee jumping, skydiving, paragliding, hot air ballooning, jet skiing)
  • Coverage for loss or damage to home contents due to fire or burglary
  • Coverage for pets to continue staying at a local pet hotel due to injury or illness of insured person

TravelEasy Pre-Ex Coverage & Notable Features

Other than the COVID-19 coverage, TravelEasy Pre-Ex offers the same coverage as the regular TravelEasy. The main addition, of course, is coverage for critical care expenses relating to pre-existing medical conditions.

Examples of such pre-existing medical conditions include asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, stroke, or cancer.

There are a few requirements:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions have to actually be diagnosed
  • You’re not travelling against the advice of your medical practitioner, and you’re not travelling for medical treatment abroad
  • You’ve been following your doctor’s prescribed course of treatment
  • You haven’t received any treatment at a hospitals A&E in the last year (or stayed in a hospital for more than three days in the last 12 months)

But if you meet all those requirements, TravelEasy Pre-Ex covers you in the event of an acute onset of any pre-existing conditions while you’re travelling .

The coverage is lower than that of non-pre-existing conditions though. For example, inpatient overseas medical expenses will only get up to $150,000 cover instead of the $1,000,000 you’d get for non-pre-existing conditions. (But that’s better than not being covered at all.)

Any pre-existing medical conditions that worsen 30 days before your trip will not be covered. If that happens, you can cancel your policy by notifying MSIG and providing supporting documents.

TravelEasy & TravelEasy Pre-Ex Exclusions

The full list of policy exclusions can be found in the policy wording , but here are some of the more significant policy exclusions to note:

  • Terminal illness
  • Mental disorders & suicide
  • Travelling to countries at war
  • Participation in professional or compensated sports
  • Items taken/destroyed by customs or other officials

Pricing & Coverage For TravelEasy Plan Types

The prices stated here are only applicable to individual travellers. Group travellers such as families and couples have better discounts. Groups of 2 to 10 can enjoy savings of up to 10% while groups of 11 to 20 can enjoy group discounts of up to 15%.

Area A: Southeast Asian Countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, East and West Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam)

Area C: Worldwide including countries in Areas A and B

As the most basic plan, TravelEasy Standard has the lowest coverage.

For example, if you’re planning an overseas wedding shoot or an adventure sports trip, you’ll want to look at either the Elite or Premier plan.

Other possibly important aspects that aren’t covered under TravelEasy Standard include:

  • Fraudulent use of your credit card overseas
  • Legal expenses for any wrongful arrests or detention
  • Maternity medical expenses overseas
  • Daily benefits for ICU hospitalisation overseas

In short, if you’re travelling someplace that may have a lot of petty crime (or you/your spouse happens to be pregnant), go for Elite or Premier instead.

Here’s a brief overview of the coverage you’ll get under the various TravelEasy plans:

In deciding between the Elite and Premier plans, we recommend estimating the costs of specific incidences. For example, if your flight is delayed, would you have to rebook a connecting flight? If your baggage is delayed or lost, is there adequate coverage for your personal belongings?

In the case of travel postponement, you can collate the total costs of transportation and any advance bookings you’ve made to see how much coverage you’ll need for the trip.

Items such as unused theme park or concert tickets are also claimable under the lifestyle cover in case of illness or injury.

Pricing & Coverage For TravelEasy Pre-Ex Plan Types

Same area rules apply, and these prices are only applicable for individual travellers. In the Pre-Ex plan’s case, there are no special group discounts for bulk purchases.

Again, TravelEasy Pre-Ex coverage is the same as the regular MSIG TravelEasy plans, with the exception of pre-ex critical care expenses:

TravelEasy Pre-Ex Drawbacks to Note

MSIG’s coverage may seem enticing with a few items rarely found in other travel insurance products in the market. However, here are some drawbacks you may want to take note of.

  • No COVID-19 coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.
  • Maximum trip length for Pre-Ex is 30 days. Travellers planning for long haul trips may not get enough coverage.
  • Pre-existing conditions that worsen within 30 days of your departure date will not be covered. If you’ve sought treatment and your doctor prescribes further treatment, medication, or surgery, your pre-existing condition will no longer qualify.
  • Trip inconveniences caused by your pre-existing condition cannot be claimed. This means any trip cancellations or postponement claims filed due to your medical condition will not be successful.

How Do These TravelEasy Plans Compare?

Let’s take a look at travel insurance with similar coverage:

For Travellers Seeking Best Coverage And Benefits

Allianz Platinum is the priciest among the three, but it offers the most trip inconvenience coverage. If you’re most concerned about flight delays or losing baggage, this is ideal.

If for some reason trip cancellations are a distinct possibility, Aviva Prestige would be the better option. It has fewer exclusions to watch out for while maintaining a great variety of medical benefits, coverage, and personalisation options. Add-on coverage for weddings and extreme sports are also available.

Lastly, amongst the three, MSIG’s TravelEasy Premier is best suited for families who want wider coverage without having to pay additional premiums. This plan automatically covers various lifestyle activities such as rental cars and adventurous activities. Pregnancy-related illnesses are also covered, which is fairly hard to find as most plans usually only cover pregnancy-related emergencies.

For Travellers Seeking Pre-Ex Coverage

These are the only three insurers providing pre-ex coverage in the market. Unfortunately, NTUC Income’s Pre-Ex Prestige plan is quite pricey (almost double of Etiqa).

For those on a tight budget, Etiqa’s Pre-Ex Luxury plan is a great option with various add-ons depending on your itinerary.

If you’re deciding between Etiqa and MSIG, Etiqa’s Luxury plan excludes lifestyle cover on things such as sports equipment and pet hotel fees. MSIG’s Premier plan includes these.

MSIG’s Pre-Ex Premier plan is also great for older travellers with greater medical coverage.

Our Verdict on MSIG Travel Insurance

Overall, the MSIG TravelEasy Insurance Plans are still very affordable (although not the cheapest in the market), especially with their generous promotions.

MSIG has a few notable perks in their plans, such as the wedding clothing & accessories coverage as well as the adventurous activities coverage. These are only available with the Elite or Premier plans, so we recommend going a tier up from Standard if your budget allows it.

And while no insurer has a perfect customer service record, MSIG has generally had positive reviews from customers who filed claims.

Travel insurance review: Is MSIG travel insurance worth it?

Travel insurance review: Is MSIG travel insurance worth it?

MSIG travel insurance is one of the most popular brands in Singapore and is second only to NTUC (impressive!). That’s probably because MSIG used to be the provider of DBS travel insurance .

DBS might have since changed their provider to Chubb, but that doesn’t mean that MSIG travel insurance isn’t solid. Let’s have a look at whether MSIG TravelEasy is worth your money.

MSIG travel insurance at a glance

Here’s a quick look at the three tiers of MSIG TravelEasy insurance plans , the Covid-19 extension as well as the TravelEasy Pre-Ex plans:

Here’s a summary of the Covid-19 extension that applies to single trip policies:

And here are the TravelEasy PreX travel insurance plans, which cover pre-existing medical conditions:

MSIG travel insurance promotions

Though the listed prices of MSIG travel insurance plans seem pretty hefty at first glance, there’s almost always a promotion to keep their prices competitive, like the current 40 per cent discount off single trip plans.

That means if you get an MSIG TravelEasy Standard plan for a week in Asean, it’d only set you back $34.20. That’s quite a steal.

To see what’s on, just click or tap on the “Promotions” tab on the MSIG travel insurance page .

As long as the 40 per cent promotion is on, I’d say it’s worth it to buy travel insurance from MSIG. The price is really competitive against the likes of NTUC Income, Aviva and FWD.

What does MSIG travel insurance cover?

Overall, MSIG’s travel insurance coverage is pretty adequate. The Standard plan has a slightly low coverage limit for emergency evacuation, and the payout for baggage delays is lower than standard, but those aren’t dealbreakers.

But the important thing to note is that the cheapest Standard plan is limited in coverage if you’re planning anything more than a normal sedate city getaway. It doesn’t cover most outdoor activities, even basic ones like skiing and scuba diving.

So you might want to opt for an Elite (or even Premier) plan for better and wider coverage. These higher tier plans cover a whole slew of outdoor activities, including the common ones listed here:

The Elite & Premier plans also cover loss of wedding-related items (so it’s good for wedding photoshoots or destination weddings) and entertainment/sports tickets (so get this if you plan to go to a festival or watch a major football match).

However, another drawback of MSIG’s travel insurance policies is the limited coverage of its Covid-19 extension. It’s payout of $65,000 for overseas medical fees due to Covid-19 falls short of other policies which offer $100,000 and upwards in claims. It also won’t do very much for you in the event of travel inconveniences caused by the pandemic.

MSIG travel insurance claim procedure

Emergency hotline: Call the MSIG emergency assistance hotline at +65 6323 8288

Phone claims: For non-emergency but urgent claim requests, call MSIG’s Claims Hotline at +65 6827 7660. A claims officer will be in touch with you to handle your case.

Online claims: Submit your claim and supporting documents through the online form (linked on   MSIG’s travel insurance claims page ). Or you can download it and email MSIG at [email protected]

Hard copy claims: You can submit your claim in person or mail it to MSIG, 4 Shenton Way, #21-01 SGX Centre 2, Singapore 068807.

Things to note: Refer to MSIG’s travel insurance claims page for instructions and a useful checklist of required documents before you make a claim. There’s also a chatbot with whom you can check on your eligibility for certain claims.

MSIG prides itself on a good claims experience, with personalised, responsive claims specialists attending to your requests. They typically settle straightforward claims within two to three weeks. Expect some delays during peak travel periods like school holidays.

Conclusion: should you buy MSIG travel insurance?

If you just look at its cheapest Standard plan, MSIG travel insurance is extremely affordable after the generous promotional discounts.

The level of support and clarity MSIG provides is also reassuring. Terms & conditions are clearly stated on the site, not hidden away in some remote PDF, and the claims process appears to be pleasant. Basically, it looks like MSIG knows their stuff.

However, the drawback is that MSIG has made the Standard plan very limited in comparison to the Elite and Premier plans. Once you compare their coverage, you will definitely feel tempted to upgrade. It’s a bit like how budget airlines compel you to add a bundle on to your basic-ass air ticket. Another thing to have in mind is that their Covid-19 extension is not the most comprehensive in its coverage.

However, if you’re vaccinated and in the pink of health and are buying from MSIG, it is worthwhile to pay a bit more for Elite if you’re taking part in outdoor activities, a wedding shoot or catching some kind of music or sports event overseas. As a bonus, you get higher coverage limits too.

3. FWD Travel Insurance

FWD travel insurance offers some of the cheapest travel insurance plans in Singapore, so this is a budget-friendly option which still offers you great value for every dollar. I like that coverage for emergency medical evacuation is unlimited for all tiers, and overseas medical expenses go up to a generous $1,000,000 (which is about as high as it gets).

Here’s a quick run-through of the price and benefits offered by FWD travel insurance plans:

When you’re purchasing FWD travel insurance, the COVID-19 benefits are an add-on. The price of the COVID-19 add-on costs between $11 to $22  depending on the part of the world you’re travelling to. If you choose to add it on, it’ll give you comprehensive coverage of the following:

  • Trip disruption
  • Trip cancellation
  • Overseas hospital cash
  • Hospital cash while in Singapore
  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

The plan reimburses your travel-related expenses if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 no more than 30 days before your scheduled departure date, or if you have to change your itinerary because of a COVID-19 diagnosis while overseas. You also get to claim medical expenses and a hospital cash benefit if you get hospitalised overseas or for up to 14 days in Singapore upon your return.

On top of that, there’s also an automatic policy extension of up to 21 days should you be prevented from travel as per foreign government regulations due to:

  • You contracting COVID-19; or
  • You or your travel companion needing to be self-isolated due to being in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19

4. Starr Travel Insurance

Starr’s travel insurance   Starr TraveLead Comprehensive is a leader in terms of how customisable their insurance is. When signing up, medical coverage (including COVID-19 coverage) is automatically included in all plans, but you can choose whether or not you want to add trip coverage (e.g. document loss, travel delay) and baggage coverage (e.g. baggage delay). Then, you can also easily add riders for Golf Protection, Cruise Vacation, Scuba Diving, and Snow Sports.

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive comes in 3 tiers: Gold , Silver and Bronze . While all are pretty comprehensive (as the name suggests), we advise you go for at least Silver . This affords you $500,000 overseas medical coverage, as well as $30,000 medical coverage for COVID-19 and $250 coverage for COVID-19 related trip curtailments and cancellations. You won’t get the COVID-19 trip curtailment/cancellation coverage in the Bronze plan, which only offers $15,000 for COVID-19 medical coverage. Better be safe and  go for Silver or Gold.

Here are the prices and coverage amounts for each tier. Prices are given with trip coverage included in the plan.

Note: Starr also has a travel insurance called Starr TraveLead Essential, which also comes in Bronze , Silver and Gold tiers. They look very attractive because of their low prices—for example, Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze costs just $20 for a 7-day trip to an ASEAN destination.

However, unless you’re on a really tight budget, I wouldn’t recommend these plans because of their more limited coverage. For example, while the Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze plan does cover you for $200,000 worth of overseas medical expenses (which is already the bare minimum), it doesn’t cover you at all for trip cancellation and loss/damage of baggage. Neither do the Silver or Gold tier plans.

5. MSIG Travel Insurance

MSIG travel insurance is categorised into 3 plans— Standard , Elite , and Premier . The cheapest, basic plan still offers pretty adequate coverage in medical emergencies and trip cancellations or delays.

Here’s a quick run-down of the plan’s key benefits:

One more unusual area of coverage that MSIG includes is emergency dental expenses. You get $5,000 to $15,000 in coverage, depending on the travel insurance tier you select.

MSIG’s Areas A and B refer, roughly speaking, to ASEAN and Asia respectively. Here’s a more comprehensive list of the countries in each category:

  • Area A : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam
  • Area B : Australia, China (excluding Inner Mongolia and Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and including countries in Area A
  • Area C : Worldwide

MSIG Travel Insurance’s COVID-19 coverage is an automatic inclusion to its travel insurance plans and offers the following coverage:

  • Trip cancellation, postponement, shortening, disruption
  • Replacement of traveller
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Overseas quarantine daily cash allowance

This is quite a decent list of benefits, but do note that daily hospital cash allowance is missing from the list.

6. Singlife Travel Insurance

Singlife travel insurance comes in 3 tiers— Lite , Plus , and Prestige . The price you pay and the coverage you’ll get increase with each plan.

Here are Singlife travel insurance’s key prices and benefits:

On top of the coverage above, Singlife also covers you for chiropractor and/or chinese physician treatment : $250 ($50 per visit) for Lite, $500 ($75 per visit) for Plus, and $1000 ($100 per visit) for Prestige.

As far as COVID-19 coverage goes, here’s a quick run-down:

  • Emergency medical evacuation, repatriation
  • Overseas quarantine allowance
  • Trip cancellation, postponement, interruption

While Singlife travel insurance’s coverage for non-COVID medical expenses, travel delay and trip cancellation is comprehensive, we have to dock some points for the lack of overseas hospital cash allowance and pretty low COVID-19 trip cancellation coverage.

Also, do note that the lowest tier, Lite, doesn’t come with certain coverage, such as trip cancellation or postponement for any reason and COVID-19 overseas quarantine allowance.

7. Etiqa Travel Insurance

Do you hate making travel insurance claims? I do. That’s why when a friend of mine told me that you don’t need to make any claim on Etiqa to receive compensation for your flight delay, I was very intrigued.

I’ve been fortunate—all my recent flights have left on time. But from what I’ve heard from friends who weren’t as lucky on their recent travels, it’s true that Etiqa has the most seamless claim process for flight delays . All you need to do is enter your flight details when purchasing your insurance. Etiqa will monitor your flight and know if your flight is delayed (to count as a delay, it needs to be pushed back at least 3 consecutive hours). If that happens, they’ll transfer money into your Etiqa TiqConnect eWallet—even if you don’t submit a claim! You can then encash that sum via PayNow.

On top of this travel delay claim benefit, Etiqa also provides flight check-in reminders and baggage belt collection details via SMS when you land. I’ve experienced this myself when I bought Etiqa’s travel insurance for my trip to the UK this year. Now that’s what I call service.

Etiqa’s travel insurance is called Tiq Travel Insurance  and comes in 3 tiers: Tiq Entry , Tiq Savvy , and Tiq Luxury . Here are their costs and coverage components:

Tiq Entry is sufficient to give you essential coverage for travel disruptions. But if you’ve just a little more to spend, go for Tiq Savvy . This will more than double your coverage limit for overseas medical expenses from $200,000 to $500,000 for just an additional $5 a week—that’s less than $1 a day.

Tiq by Etiqa logo

Comprehensive COVID-19 add-on, protecting you before, during and after your trip

Covers Cruise to Nowhere

Get paid upon a 3-hour flight delay, even without submitting a claim

The only disadvantage to Tiq travel insurance is that COVID-19 coverage is not included in the base price and you’ll have to pay for their optional  COVID-19 Add-On to be covered. Some people might say this is an advantage—it gives you a greater degree of flexibility to decide if you want to have COVID-19 coverage or not, especially as COVID-19 becomes less and less prevalent. However, the fact remains that you need to pay extra for it compared to travel insurance plans where COVID-19 coverage is already included.

Here’s how much the COVID-19 Add-On will cost for a 7-day trip:

To be covered for travel disruptions and medical expenses related to COVID-19, you’ll need to add the costs above to the base Tiq travel insurance prices.

8. Cheapest travel insurance in Singapore

When I buy travel insurance, I don’t really care whether the insurer has 900 years of experience or if the plan comes with extra coverage for Chanel bags. Just give me the cheapest travel insurance plan can  l iao !

If that sounds like you too, you’ll be glad to know we’ve done the legwork for you. After assessing the most popular travel insurers in Singapore, the honour of cheapest travel insurance in Singapore goes to… FWD travel insurance .

FWD Premium

But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Will you regret being a cheapskate and lose out on important coverage if the only number you look at is the price?

In a way, yes. Because FWD travel insurance is only the cheapest option with 2 caveats.

Firstly, travel insurers have limited-time discounts all the time. This is no secret. It does, however, make it difficult to compare prices when an expensive plan is on 40% off but a cheaper one is on 10% off. That’s why for the table above, we compared base prices without discounts .

But when you take into account promotional prices, which plan is the cheapest? There’s no need to open a million tabs to compare every travel insurance plan out there. Just use our travel insurance comparison tool with the “Lowest Price” filter  on. You’re welcome!

The second caveat is this: FWD came out the cheapest when we looked at its price  without its COVID-19 add-on. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan that includes coverage for disruptions due to COVID-19 (which you should!), the real winners are  Amex travel insurance and  Starr travel insurance .

9. Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, most insurers did not extend their coverage to COVID-19-related mishaps. (Read more here .) The pandemic was quickly considered a “known event”, which insurers usually do not offer compensation for. So, if your flight got cancelled because of COVID-19, you’d be out of luck trying to get your insurance claims approved.

Now that practically all travel restrictions are lifted, insurance companies are rushing for a slice of the pie. Since the virus looks like it’s here to stay, most insurers are offering coverage that includes specific benefits for COVID-19. Where COVID-19 benefits aren’t already included in the policy, insurers offer an optional COVID-19 rider you can pay for to add on to the existing regular coverage.

Read your policy documents carefully to see if COVID-19 is covered, and add it on if you need to.

10. How do I choose the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage?

COVID-19 coverage  can vary quite a bit from insurer to insurer . When you’re shopping for the best insurance policy,  there are 4 things you want to look out for when it comes to choosing the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage:

  • Medical expenses coverage

Do note that the plans still exclude travelling against a travel advisory put in place by the Singapore government or by the local authority at your trip destination. Meaning, if your destination country goes on red alert for COVID-19, visitors are highly likely to come into contact with the virus and your insurance is highly likely to reject any COVID-19 claims. So be sure to check announcements on both ends before you depart.

Another common exclusion is failing to take precautions against COVID-19. This is worded kinda vaguely in those lengthy insurance policies, but could include not following any COVID-19 regulations at your destination or on the plane. So make sure you wear your mask whenever it’s required (or even when it’s not, if you want to play extra safe) and don’t attend any illegal raves.

11. What do I do if I get COVID-19 during or after my travels?

First of all, when booking your trip, you should retain all receipts, tickets and itineraries in case your trip has to be cancelled or altered.

At the first sign of a COVID-19 infection or related travel disruption, you should call your insurer and ask for guidance. Many insurers maintain a 24-hour hotline for travel claims. Save that number before you depart Singapore so that you aren’t stuck somewhere without wi-fi or 4G to Google the hotline.

To make a claim , you will usually have to submit your insurer’s form with supporting documents by the deadline mentioned in your contract (usually 30 days). Don’t wait until you’re back in Singapore to check which documents you need.

If you catch COVID-19 while you’re in Singapore , you will likely have to submit the results of a PCR Swab Test or Antigen Rapid Test conducted at a clinic or hospital.

It gets a bit more complicated if you’re overseas . The insurer will likely require documentation from the hospital as well as a doctor’s letter stating that you are unfit to travel and/or recommending treatment.

If you need to be quarantined overseas , you should make sure you have a quarantine order from the government, otherwise you may not be able to claim for quarantine allowance. Remember to ask for this as not all countries automatically issue such documentation.

The insurance policy offers coverage for a range of risks that travelers might face, including medical expenses, lost or stolen luggage, flight cancellations, and more.

What is MSIG travel insurance

There are different levels of coverage under the MSIG travel insurance, which include the Travel Easy Standard, Elite, and Premier packages.

If you are planning for a single trip, it is important to note that the insurance policy must be purchased at least 3 days before the trip or earlier. It is worth noting that MSIG offers discounts on single trip and annual travel insurance plans, which can help you save some money on the insurance purchase.

If you are traveling with a companion, there are certain conditions that you and your travel companion must meet if the policy is purchased within 30 days before the start of the trip. Additionally, MSIG assists with a 24-hour hotline that can help you in the case of an emergency.

The policy includes sections such as section 21, which covers travel cancellation. If you need to cancel your trip due to an unforeseen circumstance, you can pay a claim under this policy section [[6]]. It is important to remember that changes in your planned destination or travel arrangements may lead to a claim, and you should notify MSIG as soon as possible.

MSIG travel insurance also offers an annual travel plan covering multiple trips throughout the year. The policy is valid for a year, and you can choose from different levels of coverage based on your needs.

MSIG Travel Insurance offers a range of coverage options for travelers, including coverage for trip cancellation and postponement. It’s important to note that certain conditions must be met to be eligible for these benefits.

However, MSIG will pay claims under travel cancellation and postponement, provided you and your travel companion meet these conditions. These conditions may include sudden and unexpected illness or injury, death, natural disasters, or other unforeseen events that prevent you from traveling as planned.

It’s important to read the policy documents carefully to understand the specific requirements and exclusions for trip cancellation and postponement coverage. If you need to file a claim, MSIG offers a straightforward claims process and a 24-hour worldwide travel assistance hotline to provide support and guidance.

To apply for MSIG travel insurance, you can submit an application through their website or contact their customer service team for assistance. It is important to note that the insurance is bought at least a few days before the policy purchase to be eligible for coverage. Additionally, MSIG will only pay claims under the travel cancellation section of the policy if you meet the conditions specified in the policy.

What does MSIG travel insurance cover?| MSIG Travel Insurance plans

MSIG travel insurance offers a wide range of coverage for individuals traveling overseas. The policy comes in three levels: Travel Easy Standard plan, Travel Easy Elite, and Travel Easy Premier.

Each level of coverage provides comprehensive protection, including protection for medical expenses incurred in Singapore or overseas, travel disruption, and additional travel and accommodation expenses.

What does MSIG travel insurance cover

MSIG travel insurance covers a broad range of benefits, including loss or damage to baggage and personal possessions, personal accident cover, medical expenses incurred due to accidental injuries or onset of sickness, follow-up medical treatment after your trip, and coverage for pre-existing medical conditions.

The policy also covers travel companions who meet certain conditions, such as if they are immediate family members or traveling with the policyholder on the same itinerary. Moreover, MSIG travel insurance includes emergency medical evacuation up to a maximum limit of S$1 million, and pre-existing medical conditions cover travelers with pre-existing medical conditions.

In addition, MSIG travel insurance covers travel transportation available for every situation, including flight delays, stolen travel documents, and overseas medical emergencies. The policy also covers additional travel and accommodation expenses incurred due to unforeseen travel disruptions, such as natural disasters or airline strikes.

Finally, regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, MSIG travel insurance automatically covers COVID-19-related medical expenses.

MSIG travel insurance has enhanced its Travel Easy policy to include COVID-19 coverage at no additional premium. This coverage applies to both single trip and annual multi-trip policies and provides coverage for up to S$200,000 for COVID-19-related medical expenses, including hospitalization and medical evacuation, among others. The policy also covers COVID-19-related trip cancellations or curtailment, subject to policy terms and conditions.

Suppose you tested positive by a doctor or government-approved personnel within the first 90 days of the trip overseas and are required to undergo quarantine. In that case, we will pay a daily allowance under Overseas Quarantine Daily Benefit of COVID-19 Cover for every 24 hours of quarantine at a government-approved hotel or COVID-19 medical facility, up to 14 days to defray the cost of your quarantine.

It’s important to note that different countries may have different requirements for COVID-19 insurance coverage.

For example, travelers to St. Maarten must purchase COVID-19 insurance from the St. Maarten government, which provides coverage of up to $50,000 in medical expenses. In Singapore, travelers must have travel insurance with a minimum coverage of S$30,000 for COVID-19-related medical treatment and hospitalization costs before entering the country.

MSIG does not cover if there are changes in travel advisory or restrictions, travel arrangements, or COVID-19 prevention measures issued by any government or authority relating to the epidemic or pandemic at your planned destination or Singapore.

TravelEasy Standard Plan

TravelEasy Standard Plan is one of the three policy options offered by MSIG to protect travelers against unexpected events when they are abroad. This plan is suitable for those who are looking for basic travel insurance coverage at an affordable price.

While it covers most travel inconveniences, including travel delays, baggage loss, and medical expenses due to accidental injuries or sickness, it does not cover certain sub-categories of benefits, such as Adventurous Activities/Golfer’s Cover. The maximum benefit limit for baggage delay is SGD 600, with SGD 150 provided for every six hours of delay.

One of the key advantages of the MSIG TravelEasy Standard Plan is that it automatically includes coverage for COVID-19 for both Single Trips and Annual Plans. However, reading the policy document carefully is essential to understand the coverage and exclusions. Overall, TravelEasy Standard Plan is a good option for budget-conscious travelers who want basic coverage for their travel inconveniences.

TravelEasy Elite Plan

TravelEasy Elite Plan is one of the three levels of coverage offered by MSIG’s TravelEasy travel insurance package.

This plan provides comprehensive coverage for worldwide travel, including emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, travel cancellation and postponement, and loss or damage to baggage and personal possessions. For travelers returning to Singapore, the TravelEasy Elite Plan provides coverage for overseas medical expenses incurred due to accidental injuries or the onset of sickness. If there are changes to your travel plans, the TravelEasy Premier Plan also includes coverage for trip curtailment and trip interruption. It’s important to purchase your travel insurance policy before your trip, as the period of insurance coverage starts from the day after the policy is purchased and ends upon the completion of the trip.

TravelEasy Pre-Ex Benefit

TravelEasy Pre-Ex is a travel insurance policy offered by MSIG Insurance that covers pre-existing medical conditions. This policy has over 50 benefits, including coverage for claims unrelated to pre-existing conditions, such as injuries or illnesses sustained during the trip. Benefit 52 covers claims arising from a pre-existing medical condition requiring hospitalization when you are overseas.

The policy also offers comprehensive travel benefits for claims unrelated to pre-existing medical conditions such as baggage delay, loss of travel documents, personal money, and personal accident cover.

TravelEasy Pre-Ex has no upper age limit, so whether you are 70 or 80, you can get travel insurance coverage with this policy. In addition, the policy also provides coverage for other potential risks such as medical expenses incurred overseas due to pregnancy-related illnesses, replacing a traveler in case of serious injury, illness, death, or that of their family member or travel companion, and more.

Moreover, while the coverage limit for emergency evacuation is slightly low in the Standard plan, the overall coverage offered is adequate. The premium for a 7-day trip to South Korea starts from S$64, and for a 14-day trip to Germany, the premium starts from S$159.50 under the Standard plan.

Singapore Travel Insurance

What does travel insurance for singapore cover, can i tailor my travel insurance for singapore, what does travel insurance for singapore exclude, how much does travel insurance for singapore cost, how can i compare travel insurance for singapore, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Singapore has long been a holiday favourite for Australians, either as a stop-over city on the way to Europe or the Middle East or as base for exploring Asia. According to the latest figures from data portal, Statista, 566,000 Australians visited the country in 2022.

If you’re also planning to visit, travel insurance for Singapore can safeguard your trip against a number of potential mishaps, such as falling ill while away, losing your luggage and belongings or even needing to cancel the trip before it’s even begun. Singapore is a safe country, but the cost of medical care is high.  Find out more about how travel insurance for Singapore works below.

There are three main types of travel insurance policy for Singapore. These are:

  • Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore
  • Annual multi-trip : for more than one trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore or various destinations. This type of cover can work out more cost-effective than buying multiple single trip policies but not always so it’s best to compare both types of cover.
  • Long-stay/backpacker : for an extended stay in Singapore, of typically 60 or 90 days, or 12 or 18 months. Cover for 24 months may be available, from certain providers.

When applying for travel insurance online, you’ll first be asked to enter your holiday destination. Depending on the insurer, you’ll need to click on Singapore, Asia or Worldwide travel excluding the US and nearby destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and Greenland. The latter option excludes a part of the world where medical costs are the highest, which in turn, bumps up the cost of cover. If you’re also planning to travel to the US, for example, there are separate worldwide policies that include it as a destination.

Insurers usually offer at least two or more types of travel insurance policy from basic or comprehensive cover and anything in between. Comprehensive policies offer the highest cover levels and widest range of benefits.

A key component of all travel insurance policies is emergency medical cover. You’ll find a comprehensive policy for Singapore will often offer an unlimited amount.

The standard of medical facilities and care in Singapore is similar to, or higher than in Australia, and the cost often much higher, so medical cover can prove a vital resource should you fall ill, or get injured, while away.

Note that in the case of an emergency, you’ll likely need to pay up-front first, and then reclaim the costs from your insurer, or confirm payment from your insurer with a hospital before it will provide treatment.

As standard, travel insurance for Singapore can also cover repatriation and emergency rescue, in severe medical cases, the loss or theft of your baggage and belongings and trip cancellation if you can no longer travel for reasons such as falling ill, suffering a bereavement or losing your job.

They will also likely include an array of other forms of protection, providing the most at comprehensive level. This includes cover for lost or stolen money, passports and documentation, missed departures, online fraud, and travel delay. The types of cover on offer, and cover limits, will vary between providers. You can find exactly what a policy includes in its product disclosure statement (PDS), which is usually found on an insurer’s website.

There are a number of ways you can ensure your policy fits your needs. Many insurers offer optional add-ons that you can purchase if you need specialised cover. These include insurance for gadgets (such as a smartphone or laptop), a cruise and playing golf.

If you’re thinking of participating in more high-octane activities, check your policy’s PDS. Many cover around 100 or so sports automatically. Cover for what an insurer classes as high-risk activities, such as skydiving, bungee jumping, outdoor rock climbing, and activities requiring a set of wheels, such as quad biking, may require purchasing an additional ‘sports pack’ for your policy.

While reading through a policy’s PDS, it’s crucial to also take note of any limitations of cover. These can differ between policies, but generally you can expect most insures to refuse claims relating to a pre-existing condition. This is a medical condition you had before taking out the policy. The insurer may not cover such conditions, or may refuse your claim if you did not declare your condition on applying for the policy.

An insurer is also unlikely to accept claims for an injury caused by taking part in a sport or activity where you did not wear the appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet, knee pads or a harness. Claims resulting from disorderly behaviour or being under the influence of drink or drugs will also likely be rejected.

It’s best to regularly check government advice for your destination, which it publishes on its Smartraveller website. This includes warnings about natural disasters, terrorism threats and pandemics. Visiting Singapore, or a part of the country, if the government puts it on its “do not travel” list, could invalidate your policy.

The amount you’ll need to pay for your travel insurance policy will depend on a range of factors. An insurer will consider your holiday destination, associated costs when travelling there and the length of time you’ll be travelling.

The price of a policy can rise for mature travellers and those with pre-existing conditions, as insurers view these travellers as more likely to claim on their policy.

To provide an idea of how much travel insurance for Singapore can cost, we ran quotes on the sites of the insurers we’ve rated the top five for travel insurance.

We used the profile of a family of four, aged 42, 40, 14 and 12, spending 13 to 26 May in the country, and assumed they have no pre-existing conditions, (although these providers do offer cover for pre-existing conditions should you need it).

We found basic cover ranged from around $106 to $202, while comprehensive cover started at around $241, with the most expensive policy costing just under $304.

Before choosing a policy, it’s important to shop around. An easy way to do this is to run quotes on the websites of various insurers and compare factors such as the type of cover a policy includes and cover levels against price.

To help you with your search, we’ve conducted some research and found our pick of the best comprehensive travel insurance policies .

Is travel insurance for Singapore worth it?

While travel insurance for Singapore isn’t mandatory, it can be considered a travel essential if you have no other means of covering emergency costs while away.

Emergency medical fees can easily stack up to thousands of dollars alone, and without travel insurance in place, you would have to cover them out of pocket. Travel insurance also can cover a number of eventualities that we often fail to consider, such as an airline, transport company, or accommodation provider going bust.

What is ‘excess’ in insurance?

An excess is a set amount you’ll be expected to pay on each approved claim. It’s usually levied per person on the policy, per event, per claim, but you can check the PDS for the specifics concerning your insurer. You usually can pick from a range of excess amounts, from $50 to $250 on average, when taking out a policy.

The more you choose to pay in excess, the lower your policy premium—the cost of your policy—typically will be, while paying less in excess will raise the cost. An excess is usually deducted from a claim amount, so you won’t need to pay for it out of pocket. However, it’s still crucial that you make sure it’s affordable.

Can I buy a policy while I’m in Singapore?

Some providers won’t cover a holiday if it’s already started. Others may cover you, but apply a waiting period of around 72 hours before you can claim.

The best time to take out travel insurance is as soon as you’ve booked your holiday, as you’ll be immediately covered for trip cancellation. Insurers are highly unlikely to consider claims resulting from something that happened before you took out the policy.

Extended: Earn 4 mpd on travel insurance policies with SingSaver

Aaron Wong

From now till 2 May 2024, buy travel insurance policies with AIG, Etiqa, FWD, MSIG, Singlife and more through SingSaver and earn 4 mpd.

Last month, SingSaver ran a campaign which offered 4 miles per dollar on travel insurance purchases, as well as a 100,000 KrisFlyer miles giveaway.

The giveaway has since closed to entries, but the 4 mpd has been renewed for a further month, with a different list of participating policies this time round.

If you’re thinking of buying a single trip or annual plan, this is a great opportunity to pick up some bonus miles in the process, since almost all banks now exclude rewards for insurance.

Earn 4 mpd on travel insurance purchases

msig travel insurance singapore

From 1 April 2024, 2024, 9 a.m to 2 May 2024, 8.59 a.m, purchases of selected travel insurance products via SingSaver will earn a total of 4 KrisFlyer miles per S$1.

The following products are participating:

  • AIG Insurance (Single Trip & Annual Trip)
  • Allianz Travel Hero (Single Trip & Annual Trip)
  • Etiqa Insurance (Single Trip & Annual Trip)
  • FWD Insurance (Single Trip & Annual Trip)
  • Great Eastern Travel Smart (Single Trip & Annual Trip)
  • MSIG Insurance (Single Trip & Annual Trip)
  • Singlife Insurance (Single Trip & Annual Trip)
  • Starr Insurance Singapore (Single Trip & Annual Trip)

All premiums will be rounded down to the nearest S$1 before miles are awarded; for example a S$200.80 policy will earn 800 miles.

KrisFlyer miles earned under this offer will be deposited directly to your KrisFlyer account by 30 June 2024.

Terms & Conditions

The T&Cs for this campaign are split into two sets, but they both apply concurrently (i.e. each set of T&Cs mentions an earn rate of 2 mpd for a total of 4 mpd).

What credit card should you use to pay?

Unfortunately, the vast majority of credit cards now exclude rewards for insurance purchases. What few remain offer mediocre earn rates ranging from 0.24 to 1.2 mpd.

If you’re a Citi cardholder, however, you could use insurance premiums to help you meet the minimum spend for welcome offers or card benefits (e.g. limo rides with the Citi Prestige ). Even though these transactions don’t earn any points, Citi has confirmed they will still count towards the minimum spend.

From now till 2 May 2024, SingSaver is offering 4 mpd on travel insurance purchases, so be sure to browse the selection and see what works for you. My preferred option is Singlife because they cover the loss of miles and points, and have a “cancel for any reason” clause that you can invoke a maximum of once per policy/policy year.

There really aren’t a lot of options left for earning miles on insurance, so this is a rare opportunity.
