Highlights from the second round of the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples.

Alison Lee birdied four of her final five holes to card an eight-under 64 on Friday and tie Japan's Nasa Hataoka for the 36-hole lead at the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Florida

Lee and Hataoka are both 14 under, with Ruoning Yin of China, Minjee Lee of Australia and Amy Yang of South Korea one shot off the pace at Tiburon Golf Club.

Alison Lee has never broken through on the LPGA Tour, but she placed second at the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea last month, then won the Aramco Team Series event in Riyadh on the Ladies European Tour and tied for second last week at The Annika.

A victory for the 28-year-old in the LPGA Tour season finale for the $2m first prize would be one memorable breakthrough.

Lee collected five birdies and her only bogey of the day over her first seven holes. After six straight par saves, she then began her closing run of birdies at the par-five 14th.

"Today was a different wind direction, so it was a little bit tougher for me," said Hataoka, who made two of her seven birdies on the final two holes of her round.

Minjee Lee posted a 67 to stay one shot back of the leaders, while Yang fired a bogey-free 63 with six birdies on the back nine to catapult into contention.

Tied for sixth at 11 under are Thailand's Atthaya Thitikul and China's Xiyu Lin, each of whom posted a second-round 66.

Vu, who won last week at The Annika and captured two major championships this year, is battling France's Celine Boutier for Rolex Player of the Year honours. Boutier (70 Friday) is nine back at five under.

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Alison Lee birdied four of her last five holes Friday to extend a hot streak that stretches from Saudi Arabia to South Korea to Florida. Her 8-under 64 gave her a share of the lead with Nasa Hataoka in the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship.

Hataoka atoned for missing a short par putt by closing with a pair of birdies, finishing with a 25-footer on the last hole for a 67 in a wide-open chase for the $2 million prize.

Lee had five birdies in seven holes at the start, and then had a strong finishing kick that included a wedge to a foot on the 15th and a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th.

The 28-year-old Californian has never won in her nine years on the LPGA Tour, but no one brought as much momentum. In her last three tournaments worldwide, she has runner-up finishes in the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea and The Annika last week in Florida. She also won an Aramco Team Series event on the Ladies European Tour.

Lee now is 46-under par in her last 10 rounds.

“I feel like the last month, everything is falling into place,” Lee said.

Lee and Hataoka were at 14-under 128, remarkably low scoring for Tiburon Golf Club but to be expected given the 4 inches of rain that drenched the course on the eve of the tournament. The greens were soft and rolled well given only 60 players are in the field.

Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, watches his tee shot on the sixth hole during the second round of the RBC Heritage golf tournament, Friday, April 19, 2024, in Hilton Head Island, S.C. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

Eight players were at 10 under or lower going into the weekend.

Women’s PGA champion Ruoning Yin of China had a 66 and was part of the group one shot behind that included Minjee Lee (67) and Amy Yang (63). Xiyu Lin, who like Lee is trying to win for the first time on the LPGA Tour, had a 66 and was another shot behind.

“Better late than never,” Lee said with a smile.

The top 60 players from the Race to CME Globe qualify for the Tour Championship, and then it’s a four-day shootout regardless of the standing in the points race. Only six players have earned $2 million or more this season, and that’s what the winner gets.

“I feel good about my game right now,” Lee said. “I wish I knew the recipe for success, but just try my best to ride the wave right now.”

It’s been quite a ride. She was the No. 1 amateur a decade ago and then struggled on the LPGA Tour and her confidence took a beating. Lee said on more than one occasion she began to think she would never win.

She had plenty of support, including one unlikely source — Fred Couples. They played in a corporate outing in New York this summer. Couples got her number and began texting messages of encouragement, mainly that she had plenty of game.

“He would ask me a lot of questions and I would ask him questions back, and I slowly started to open up to him over the last month or so bit by bit, kind of telling my personal experience, what I went through, why I’m in this place, why I didn’t believe in myself,” Lee said.

“He’s been playing golf for so long. He’s still playing golf now. He’s been everywhere. He’s won so many times on tour,” she said. “He’s been like a really great mentor to me over the last month and hammering a lot of positive energy and confidence.”

Still to go are 36 holes and a half-dozen players within four shots of the lead.

Lilia Vu, the double major winner this year who moved back to No. 1 in the women’s world ranking, had a 66 and was still six shots behind. But she moved closer than ever to winning the points-based LPGA player of the year. Celine Boutier would have to win the Tour Championship to have any chance, and she was nine shots out of the lead in a tie for 33rd.

“The response has been fantastic,” said Art Switner, NASA’s president.

“We have 350 men members with 54 golfers on a waiting list. The ladies have 185 members and there are 75 more waiting to get in.

“We started it with 16 guys in 1993. Senior inter club playing was over, the weather was still good and the courses were still in great shape and the guys still wanted to play in some tournaments.

“Somebody said ‘Why don’t we do something?’”

So, Switner did.

“We had our first NASA tournament at the J.R. Golf Course. Then we played Eagle Rock and Ironhead.”

Then it took off.

“We quickly grew to 60 people. Now we’re completely full.”

The ladies division began in 2012.

“The men had such a successful Tour going and the women started complaining that there wasn’t a league for women,” said Ruth Benbow, tour co-ordinator for the ladies.

“I emailed Art to say that the wives of the men wanted to have something, too. He then emailed the men members to say if their wives wanted to play to email me,” said Bebow, whose husband Allen plays the men’s Tour.

Like the men, the response was immediate with 140 women signing up.

Restricted to men 55 and over and ladies 50 and over, the men now play 20 18-hole events at 18 different courses around Edmonton; the women play 19 tournaments at 16 different courses.

The biggest selling point is the price, as Switner has managed to get great deals.

“We played Wetaskiwin’s Montgomery Glen and it cost our members just $35 and that included a power cart,” said Switner. “This past week we played Barrhead and that was $35 as well.”

“Art is such a superb negotiator,” said Benbow. “We just say ‘Hi; can we have the same rates as the men?’ and they all said yes.”

Both the men and the women play every Monday, unless it’s a holiday at which times it moves to Tuesdays.

The oldest member is Jerry Dea, 92, who Switner said usually shoots in the range of 105.

The men’s Tour membership also includes Ken Goodwin. While Goodwin hasn’t reached the lofty heights of 100-year-old Ken Darlington, a Riverside member who, profiled last week, has shot his age 340 times, Goodwin, 88, regularly shoots his age, too, achieving that feat 47 times.

“NASA is so much fun,” said Goodwin, who, when he was 75, shot a 71 at Eagle Rock and who, two weeks ago, shot an 85 at his home River Ridge course. “I love the companionship; we get to play so many various courses and Art does such a good job organizing the Tour.

“When I was young I’d usually shoot between 75-77. But that was 40 years ago.”

Goodwin said he credits baseball for his success on the course.

“Golf and baseball both use similar swings except that in golf you swing up and down,” said Goodwin, saying that he was a better baseball player in northern B.C. than he is a golfer.

“I’m a little guy — I only weigh about 150 pounds — but I’m consistent. I can still hit a ball about 225 yards and they are usually straight,” said Goodwin, who finished second in golf in the World Masters Games — losing by a single shot to Australia’s Kevin Chapman — when they were held in Edmonton in 2005.

Steve Sewell pulled off the toughest shot in golf when he made an albatross deuce on the Par 5 9th hole at Glendale. After a drive of 285 yards he knocked in a 6-iron — no misprint — from 202 yards.

• Unfortunately, the YEG Golf Tour, which we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, has folded because of a lack of entries.

• Alberta Golf Events — a new website designed to inform golfers of all kinds of tournaments — has been launched.

“It was formed to make finding a golf tournament or events so much easier and less time consuming so you can spend more time playing golf,” said organizer, Jeff Turenne.

If you’re looking for a tournament go to www.albertagolfevents.com and if you have a tournament email [email protected]

• Sikander Kaleka finished second by one shot in the Maple Leaf Junior Tour Ford series stop’s collegiate division at Swan-e-Set Bay Resort golf course in Pitt Meadows, B.C.

• The annual North/South played at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge golf course by Alberta PGA pros was a romp for the South whose team won all three events: best ball, scotch ball and singles matches.

Tim Sawatzky, formerly the GM of Calgary’s Lynx Ridge and prior to that head pro at Sirocco, Swatzky was the star winning all of three of his matches.

“Always a ton of laughs,” said Alan Carter, the GM of the Edmonton Country Club. “For most of the participants it is one of their favourite weekends of the year. The weather was perfect and the course was in awesome condition.”

Two holes-in-one at Riverside: Matt Kates aced No. 17 from 192 yards with a sweet 6-iron while Terry Legendre aced No. 14 from 123 yards — also with a 6-iron.

The Red Deer Golf and Country Club is still sizzling. The fourth hole-in-one of the young season was authored by Marney Holmes, who got the job done on No. 17 from 114 yards with a driver.

A couple of aces at Glendale: Rick Reinhardt got his second when he aced No. 16 from 191 yards with a very big 7-iron.

And Darwin Sturko got the job done on No. 2 when his 220-yard 3-wood found the cup.

Don Dary got The Ranch’s first hole-in-one of the season when he aced No. 8 with a 6-iron from 152 yards.

And at Highlands Maurice Kishiuchi aced on No. 16 with an 8-iron from 140 yards.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
