Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

Hurtigruten's MS Nordlys sailing the beautiful Norwegian Fjords

HURTIGRUTEN CRUISES

Destinations.

Hurtigruten's Norwegian Coastal Cruise along the scenic coast and fjords of Norway has often been praised as being one of the most beautiful voyages in the world. Each day of your voyage will yield unforgettable memories of natural beauty as you discover a coastline with an ever changing personality with a new revelation around every headland.

Spitsbergen

Remote, mysterious and extreme, the island of Spitsbergen is the crown of Arctic Norway. Located right on the southern fringe of the ever-frozen Arctic Ocean, this land is forged by ice, wind and sea. Here you will find both an untouched Arctic wilderness and a biological hot spot. Reigning this fragile food web is the top predator, the polar bear.

Greenland is a land of contrasts and truly a world of its own. Colossal icebergs in fantastic shapes and the inland ice - a sheet of ice that is kilometres thick. But the ice is not all. Greenland is also about green mountains, long fjords, precipitous cliffs, hot springs, beautiful flowers and fresh air. Animals like whales, seals, reindeer, musk oxen and polar bears also thrive here.

Hurtigruten - A Voyage Like No Other

Right to the heart of Norway and its people, is extraordinary voyage known as the Norwegian Coastal Express or Hurtigruten, meaning "Express Route" in the local tongue. This remarkable journey serves as a lifeline, transporting passengers, mail, and vital supplies to over 30 ports along the Norwegian coastline, many largely untouched by mainstream cruise liners.

Departing from Bergen, the Hurtigruten cruise embarks on a captivating odyssey, forging its way northward, traversing the Arctic Circle and beyond. With every twist and turn through the awe-inspiring wonders of the Norwegian coast, you will be immersed in a spectacle of nature's grandeur. Almost perpetually in sight of land, you will sail along one of the world's most breathtaking coastlines, navigating narrow inlets and uncovering the essence of this extraordinary expedition.

Enchanting hamlets pepper the route, nestled upon tiny islands, where the inhabitants rely on the arrival of Hurtigruten ships for their very survival. These vessels serve as a lifeline, delivering essential supplies and reuniting families and friends, perpetuating the symbiotic relationship between the communities and the sea.

Each Hurtigruten cruise ship possesses its own distinctive style and character, ensuring that no two journeys are ever alike. The ever-changing seasons, climate, flora, fauna, and encounters with local people, combined with the amiable English-speaking crew, transform each Hurtigruten voyage into a truly unique experience.

Fellow travelers from across the globe, sharing a mutual appreciation for extraordinary beauty, come together to revel in the splendorous landscapes and the relaxed ambiance on board. Many seize the opportunity to sail during the summer months, when the midnight sun casts its ethereal glow upon the horizon, bathing the breathtaking scenery in perpetual daylight.

As you step aboard your Hurtigruten ship, take pride in being part of a tradition that spans three centuries. It is this steadfast commitment to a rich heritage that has embedded Hurtigruten as an indispensable part of Norwegian life, ensuring its enduring significance for generations to come.

Hurtigruten Cruise

Hurtigruten has an old and illustrious history. Its meaning in Norwegian of "the express route" refers to the route's original use of facilitating the transport of goods between the two ends of the country. Nowadays, however, it is synonymous with a more leisurely, relaxed style of travel.

Often called "the world's most beautiful voyage", Hurtigruten voyages traverse Norway's western and northern coast between Bergen in the south and Kirkenes, deep in the arctic north. The approximately 780 miles (or 1,255 kilometres) of coastline between the two destinations are a dreamland of dramatic fjords, historic cities, incomparable seabird and marine life and, at certain times of the year, the mesmerising spectacle that is the Northern Lights.

Passengers joining one of our Hurtigruten Cruises have a choice of an extensive selection of comfortable cabins. Most outside cabins afford the opportunity to watch the panorama outside unfold through either a large picture window or a quaint porthole. Some of the suites also benefit from a private balcony. The views very much set the tone for the voyage itself, which aims to transport passengers away from their busy onshore lives in favour of immersion in the unique landscapes.

Life on board is relaxed and convivial. Food is traditional Norwegian-style and all ships are fully licensed. Expert lecturers accompany themed voyages but passengers on all voyages will find that there is a culture of sharing experiences of the trip with their fellow travellers.

Dress is informal although, of course, breathable, windproof and waterproof clothing is a must for voyages at any time of year. Winter departures necessitate thermal layers. UV sunglasses are useful throughout the year, even in winter due to the dazzling effect of even the thinnest streams of sunlight reflecting off ice and snow.

To add further interest to the voyage, all the ships are also working vessels. Their regular stops at the 34 ports along the route provide opportunities for the curious passenger to observe the loading and unloading of goods while also admiring the harbour areas.

The ports of call vary in size and purpose. Some belong to tiny island communities that rely on the Hurtigruten ships for supplies of food, mail, other essential goods and personal transport needs. Others are home to much larger communities whose wealth and status owes much to their background in the fishing, shipbuilding or mining industries. Bergen at the start of the voyage is perhaps the best-known location, with its Hanseatic mercantile history, its museums, shops and galleries, its fish market and the funicular railway offering spectacular trips to the summit of Mount Fløyen.

Beyond Bergen, every traveller is bound to find their own favourites. Perhaps it will be the pretty Art Nouveau town of Ålesund. Rebuilt after a devastating fire at the turn of the twentieth century, Ålesund is home to an impressive aquarium, which is actually built in to the coastline.

Fjord-lovers will adore the fairy tale landscapes of Geiranger. During the summer months, there is the additional opportunity to voyage into the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Geirangerfjord. Visitors can also opt to join onshore excursions to allow them to marvel at the fjords from an entirely different vantage point.

Synonymous for many with the Vikings, Trondheim is also Norway's ecclesiastical centre. In addition, it is home to one of Europe's most splendid Gothic cathedrals, Nidaros, and features a large number of picturesque and thoroughly photogenic wooden buildings, including the magnificent Stiftsgården palace.

The island chains of Lofoten and Vesterålen are a wildlife-lovers paradise. Sea eagles, guillemots, eider ducks, cormorants and puffins are only some of the bird species regularly spotted here. The area's rich marine life is also why so many fishermen make their livings here; their waterfront cabins (rorbuer) built on stilts are always much admired.

Few people can visit Norway without thinking of the herring trade. Harstad is the place to learn more, although this port town has also now embraced shipbuilding with equal gusto.

Hammerfest is the most northerly town in the world. Despite this, it remains mostly ice-free, thanks to the warming effects of the nearby Gulf Stream.

Kirkenes, where the coastal voyage turns south again for Bergen, lies only 10 kilometres from the Russian border. Largely insulated from the Gulf Stream, its deep harbour can become iced over in winter.

It may be difficult to decide which time of year to take a Hurtigruten Cruise. Spring is the ideal time to experience the contrast between the warmer south and the colder north, where ice has often not yet released its grip. The summer months are often the most popular, with many travellers keen to experience the “Land of the Midnight Sun”. Whatever time of year is chosen, passengers can be sure of a warm and hearty Norwegian welcome and an unforgettable encounter with some of the world's most awe-inspiring and beautiful landscapes.

Sights to see during a Norway cruise

There is a lot to discover in the towns along the Norwegian coast. After arriving at the Lysefjord, you can hike on the 600 metre high Preikestolen and enjoy the breathtaking views of the fjord and the surrounding mountains from above. If you are looking for a special thrill, you can dare a basejump here. In the Oslofjord , on the other hand, the capital city with its museums attracts visitors. The Bygdøy Peninsula is home to the Norwegian Maritime Museum - Norsk Maritime Museum  - and the Vikingskipshuset Museum with Viking ships from the 9th century. The 371-metre-high Holmenkollen mountain offers a magnificent view of the fjord and the city , The time-honoured ski jumping facility is not only known to Winter sports enthusiasts. In the associated ski museum, you can also learn about the history of Winter sports in Norway - and especially in Oslo. --> Oslo cruises

If your cruise ship takes you on a journey through the unique Norwegian fjord landscape in Flåm , you should not miss a trip on the Flåm Railway. Along the route you can enjoy beautiful views of the mountains and the train stops at the mighty Kjosfossen waterfall for a photo stop.

If you’re a nature lover, you're in the right place on a Norway cruise anyway. With a little luck, in the evening in Tromsø you will be able to watch the special plays of light in the sky as the Northern Lights illuminate the night. If you want to travel against the midnight sun, the Norway cruise is just as exciting for you. In Honningsvåg -  the northernmost point of Europe - drive to the North Cape . There you can find an informative visitor centre or you can head to the bird cliff near Gjesværstappan, where countless puffins, cormorants and gannets can be admired. --> North Cape cruises

The Lofoten islands, offshore to the Norwegian mainland offers one thing: peace and solitude. Here you can go fishing or hike on one of the more than 50 islands. At the same time you can also visit the Lofotr Viking Museum , paddle a kayak tour to the secluded coves or discover old fishing villages. --> Lofoten cruises

A unique nature experience is a visit to the Arctic islands of Spitsbergen , where you can observe not only polar bears on guided tours, but also a variety of animals that have adapted to the freezing weather. An absolute highlight are hot air balloon rides. From lofty heights, you will not only see your cruise ship at anchor, but you will also be able to admire the natural beauties from a bird's eye view much better. --> Spitsbergen cruises

Not to be forgotten is also the Nordland region - the gateway to the North of Norway. The region lies above the Arctic Circle and is the beginning of the North of Norway. Here you can expect an incredible, beautiful landscape with a cultural, mystical and historical background. Clear lakes, breathtaking panoramic views and fabulous mountains that create a magical atmosphere, can be found here as far as the eye can see.

When trolls dance through fjords and the northern lights shine

There is something mystical about spending the Summer evenings on your cruise ship in one of Norway's many fjords and looking up to the sky. There are rarely stars to see, because the further North you come, the shorter the nights. At the North Cape, the sun does not set any more between late May and mid-July. This unique natural spectacle is hard to beat and yet the colourful, often blue-green coloured northern lights - Aurora Borealis - are certainly just as spectacular. You can see them especially well in the Spring and Autumn times as no ships visit Norway in the Winter.

Most Norway cruises offer a stop in the famous Geiranger Fjord . Get off the ship in Hellesylt and go kayaking on a discovery tour of the UNESCO World Heritage. Almost vertically falling waterfalls are fed by the snow-capped mountain peaks. And with the appropriate position of the sun, the cascades of the " Seven Sisters " provide a rainbow-like illumination of the rocks. On a spectacular trip over the Trollstigen you drive on a mountain road that winds along the steep cliffs and provides unique views on the way. At the same time, you can get an idea of the amount of work involved in road construction at this point in 1936.

In Bergen, the second largest city in Norway, stroll comfortably against the backdrop of the old harbour front Bryggen - also called Tyskebryggen - past small shops, restaurants and museums. All this once housed the old trading offices of the Hanseatic League. Visit the Hanseatic Landungsbrücken, evidence of Bergen's flourishing business with the world. --> Bergen cruises

During a trip to the stave church Fantoft you will get to know the special architectural style of these buildings, which were built entirely of wood and without a single screw. The stave church here was modelled on the original building from 1150, after it was completely burned down. Originally the church stood in the Sognefjord and was moved to Fantoft in 1883, where it fell victim to the flames in 1992.

In southeastern Norway Ålesund the unique natural landscape and the special architecture meet. Allow yourself a view of the city and the sea from the viewpoints on Aksla, the city hill of Ålesund. The Fjellstua and Kniven observation decks are within walking distance of more than 400 steps from the Stadtpark or can be easily reached by tram. Below them is the city with small offshore islands and opposite the Sunnmøre Alps .

On an excursion to the Alnes lighthouse in the fishing village of the same name, you will get to know Norway's lighthouse construction and you will be able to hear some of the history of the Vikings, who once were masters of the Northern seas.

For those who, in addition to all the breathtaking nature, still fancy a big-city feeling should pay a visit to Trondheim. The 11th-century Gothic Nidaros Cathedral is sure to captivate every visitor. For a shopping stroll and a cozy coffee, there are various shops and cafes. Enjoy the nature and the history of Scandinavia marked by the Vikings and sailors during your Norway cruise.

Norway's neighboring countries, such as Sweden, Denmark, Finland and  Iceland , each have their unforgettably unique characteristics, so be sure to relax in  Reykjavik , Iceland's geothermal spa surrounded by volcanic vistas, or stroll through the stylish Swedish capital, built across 14 islands.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Prepare for Nordic Adventure

As an Arctic wonder, Norway offers adventure, attractions and charm all year round.

If you visit the country in the summer, you'll avoid the chilly temperatures, you'll be able to witness the Midnight Sun and will find that more attractions are open. In winter, however, you'll be able to see a northern wonderland covered in a magical layer of snow, which you can enjoy by snow shoeing, skiing or snowboarding. Between late September and late March, it's dark from early afternoon until late morning, and this is the best time to see the Northern Lights.

No matter what season you decide to visit, just remember the Norwegian saying, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." While the climate between different areas of the country varies widely, the Norwegian winters are long and cold in general. If you wear the right clothes, though, you'll be just fine.

Northern lights cruises: A guide to chasing the aurora borealis at sea

Fran Golden

Witnessing the elusive northern lights flickering across the sky might cause you to gasp because it's actually that cool. The colorful ribbons of green look like something from outer space — and they are. Auroras appear when charged particles collide with Earth's atmosphere.

Seeing the ethereal display, also known as the aurora borealis, is a bucket-list experience for many travelers. Cruise ships can take you to destinations where your chances of catching Mother Nature's special light show are improved.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Remember that seeing this phenomenon doesn't involve a cruise director flipping on a switch. Witnessing the northern lights requires clear and dark skies, late-night viewing hours, enough solar activity for the colors to appear and a big dose of luck. Keep that in mind before you invest all your cruise vacation hopes in this one experience.

Where can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

norwegian cruises norway

The lights are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere and especially in locations on the so-called auroral oval, a ring zone over the polar regions. In cruising terms, that means prime viewing is in northern Alaska (which is easily accessible on cruisetours), Norway, Iceland, Arctic Canada and parts of Greenland.

Just off the auroral ring is the rest of Alaska. If you are on a cruise in the Inside Passage before April 21 or after Aug. 21 and are willing to be awake in the middle of the night (the lights tend to appear in Alaska after midnight), there's a chance you'll see the aurora borealis.

Cruise lines operating in Alaska — including Holland America , Princess Cruises and UnCruise Adventures — have northern lights sign-up sheets so you don't have to stay up all night, every night, hoping to see the display. Put your name on the list, and you'll receive a wake-up call or knock on your cabin door if there's aurora action. Plan to put on your clothes or bathrobe quickly, as the lights might only appear for a few minutes. (They could also last considerably longer.)

Related: Peak solar activity is forecast for 2024: Here are the best places around the world to see the northern lights

If you're interested in where to see the northern lights outside Alaska, the Arctic city of Alta, Norway, calls itself "The City of Northern Lights."

Alta's credentials include the world's first permanent observatory for viewing the aurora borealis; it was built there in 1899. A whole industry has sprung up around the lights, including such extravagant shore excursions as an overnight in a tent with viewing windows at a Sami dog-sledding camp. Alta is also home to the Northern Lights Cathedral, an architectural landmark.

Tromso is another Norwegian destination known as a hub for aurora borealis viewing. In late January, there's a northern lights arts festival featuring top artists in various musical genres.

Cunard Line and Hurtigruten are among the lines that visit northern Norway in the fall. However, the peak viewing season is from November to March (see below). Viking also visits but in the winter.

Iceland, Greenland and Arctic Canada appear on many expedition ships' itineraries during northern lights season, mostly early in the season in August and September. Lines with ships there include Quark Expeditions, Aurora Expeditions and Lindblad Expeditions.

When can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

norwegian cruises norway

Because of the late-setting and early rising midnight sun, it's way too light during the summer to see the northern lights in the destinations mentioned, but solar activity does take place year-round.

If you have a goal of seeing the aurora borealis in any of the destinations discussed here, you're best off booking as far into the fall as you can find a cruise. Norway is the only prime northern lights destination with winter cruises.

The lights like to appear in the wee hours — particularly between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. — in Alaska. An advantage in Norway is that it's dark enough to see them for a longer period during fall and winter.

Do cruisetours in Alaska improve my chances of seeing the lights?

Cruisetours in Alaska can improve your odds of seeing the aurora because they get you to Fairbanks and other inland destinations in Alaska that tend to have more cloud-free skies than in the Inside Passage, where cruise ships sail.

While you might see the lights from Denali National Park and Preserve during the viewing season, venturing to Fairbanks and points farther north will increase your odds.

Fairbanks tourism folks like to brag that if you visit for at least three nights between Aug. 21 and April 21, your chances of seeing the aurora borealis are more than 90%. (That assumes you are out actively looking during the late evening hours.)

Since your cruisetour might not visit for three nights, consider booking extra hotel nights before or after your cruise. Other things to do in this laid-back city (human population: about 100,000; moose population: 16,000) include riverboat tours, gold panning and yoga with reindeer.

You can also see the lights in Canada's Yukon Territory, including in the gold rush town of Dawson City, which is visited on some Holland America cruisetours.

Related: What's the best way to view the northern lights? We tried to see them by air, land and sea

Should I go on a cruise just to see the northern lights?

Yes, but remember that the phenomenon is dependent on the weather (clear skies required) and hard to predict, despite scientists' best efforts.

Viking has wintertime cruises to Norway from London specifically designed to track the lights in the Norwegian Sea during the peak viewing season — throughout the cruise but especially above the Arctic Circle in Tromso and Alta (where the sailings stop overnight). It's dark in these locales in winter, increasing your chances.

Hurtigruten is so invested in its northern lights experiences that it has hired famed northern lights astronomer Tom Kerss as its "chief aurora chaser." He will serve as an onboard expert, offering talks and workshops for passengers.

The line is so sure you will see the lights on the October-through-March sailings of its year-round 11- and 12-day Norwegian Coastal Express itineraries that the company has a guarantee called the Northern Lights Promise. If the deck's officers don't announce to all on board that the northern lights are happening, you can get a six- or seven-day Norwegian Coastal cruise for free.

Imagine sailing on the incredible Viking long ships in the Viking Ship Museum. Picture perfect, the oldest Scandinavian city sits at the head of a 60-mile fjord framed by lakes, woods, moors. Views forever, visit the cliff-dwelling Akershus Castle, originally built in 1300.

Enjoy a day of exploration and discovery in picturesque Gothenburg. Located on Sweden’s southwest coast, Gothenburg has been a vital port through the centuries. View the dramatic cliffs of the port's Archipelago as you cross the Alvborg Bridge and breathe in the fragrance of colourful flowers at the beautiful Botanical Gardens. Head out on a walking tour through the city’s cultural hub Götaplatsen – a square bordered by the Musuem of Fine Arts and featuring the impressive Poseidon Fountain. Set sail to Gothenburg on a European cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line.

It's been more than two decades since the walls came down and Berlin became unified in many ways, including the pursuit of joy. Germany's capital city is a city that balances cosmopolitan chic with a liberal undercurrent of creativity and cool. Famous landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag fascinate. The elegant Bavarian Quarter amazes.

/sites/default/files/CPH_50_CastlesofNorthZealand.jpg

The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, is filled with canals, cobbled squares and copper spires. But don't let the historic appearance fool you. This is also Scandinavia's most cosmopolitan city. Certainly you can relive medieval times in The Latin Quarter, but you can also enjoy some of Europe's finest shopping, museums, cafes and nightlife prior to your cruise around the Baltics. Explore more of Copenhagen on a European cruise !

History, culture and architecture intertwine in Amsterdam amongst its narrow lanes and numerous canals. Featuring more bridges than Venice, enjoying a canal tour is a great way to take in the many sights of Amsterdam (and get some great photo ops). Art lovers won't want to miss the Van Gough Museum and the Rijksmuseum whilst history buffs will want to make time for the Anne Frank House and the Amsterdam Museum.

/sites/default/files/ZEE_modal_riverside.jpg

The ultimate European city, Brussels has tonnes of museums, fountains, gardens and great shopping. Stroll the Old Town area to see St. Hubert Arcades and its shops, as well as Butchers' Street with its plethora of restaurants and cafes and the Grand Place with its Baroque guild houses.

/sites/default/files/Ports_LEH_MW_881x400.jpg

Hop on a tour bus to the City of Light to experience the magic of Paris. Stroll down the Champs-Elysées as you nibble on a croissant. Take photos of beautiful Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Notre-Dame, the Louvre, Montmartre and all the other iconic places of Paris lie 120 miles up the Seine from the port of Le Havre. Or explore the charms of Le Havre, spend the day at Monet's Giverny or explore Rouen's Old Market Place, where Joan of Arc was burned in 1431.

Protected from the frequent storms of the English Channel by the Isle of Wight, Southampton has survived a turbulent history to serve as a principal port of the United Kingdom today. Pay homage to one of the most famous ships to sail these shores at the Mayflower Memorial. Visit the stoic walls of Bargate and the Tudor House Museum.

Voyage overview

Join us from Bergen to Svolvær and see our fjords, the Western Norway coastal towns and, of course, the Helgeland coastline. In summer we sail into the Geirangerfjord, and in the autumn we sail into the Hjørundfjord, which is known to be the most beautiful fjord in Norway.

Cross the Arctic Circle for chances of the  Northern Lights  in winter or the  Midnight Sun  in summer

Explore beautiful towns and cities like Ålesund, Bodø, and Trondheim

End your voyage in the spectacular Lofoten Islands, famous for its dramatic peaks

The day-by-day programme will give you some ideas about what you can see during your voyage, but bear in mind that this itinerary is just an indication. After all, this is a sailing where the elements rule and weather conditions might vary.

A tourist takes a photo of the wooden buildings in Bryggen, Bergen

All Aboard!

Your voyage starts in Bergen , the second-largest city in Norway and gateway to the fjords. Founded in 1070 AD, Bergen boasts architecture influenced by prosperous 14th-century German trading organisation, the Hanseatic League.

If you’ve time before your ship departs, visit the UNESCO-listed wharfs of the colourful Bryggen district, now an artisan quarter complete with cobblestone streets. Just across the street is the famous Fish Market which serves delicious seafood. There’s also the Fløibanen funicular which takes you up to the top of Mount Fløyen for views of the city.

To get the most out of your visit to Norway, don’t forget that we can also help you to arrange tours before or after your voyage, such as the Norway in a Nutshell programme.

Your voyage begins

Before boarding, you can relax in our comfortable guest lounge at the terminal. Once aboard, enjoy the first of many delicious meals made from fresh coastal produce as we depart Bergen and sail the old Viking route along Hjeltefjord.

You’ll also meet your ship’s Coastal Experience Team who will be your guides as we cruise Norway’s coastline, organising lectures, onboard activities, and optional hikes.

Time in port:

Bergen : 14:45 - 20:30

MS Nordlys sailing through the Geirangerfjord in Norway

Iconic Architecture and Fantastic Fjords

Enjoy early morning in the Nordfjord near Torvik. We then sail past West Cape for our approach to Ålesund.

Art Nouveau city

Ålesund is renowned for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture and Atlanterhavsparken, one of Northern Europe’s largest saltwater aquariums. If you’re travelling with us in spring or winter, you’ll have most of the day to explore this picturesque town.

Into the fjords

In the summer, from June to August, we set course for UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord *. This is a protected and preserved piece of paradise with towering mountain cliffs and waterfalls like the famous Seven Sisters cascading into the fjord.

Geirangerfjord is replaced by Hjørundfjord for the following sailings: 2024: 5th June, 16th June, 27th June, 8th July, 19th July, 30th July, 10th August, 21st August 2025: 1st June, 12th June, 23rd June, 4th July, 15th July, 26th July, 6th August, 17th August, 28th August

In spring, from April to May*, and in autumn, from September to October, your ship will sail to Hjørundfjord , hidden away in the Sunnmøre Alps. There’ll also be a call at the scenic village of Urke to gaze at the view of thousand-year-old farms, the fjord, and the lush mountainsides. *Only on voyages departing in 2025-26.

Mountains and roses

The last port of the day is Molde . In summer, there might just be enough daylight to see the amazing view of 222 mountain peaks across the fjord, called ‘the Molde Panorama’.

From mid-June to late August, the streets and gardens here will be adorned with the sight and scent of roses of all shades, living up to Molde’s nickname as ‘The City of Roses’.

Nidaros Cathedral is one of Trondheim's most famous sights

City of Kings and Palaces

This section of the voyage sees us enter the Trøndelag region of Norway, marked by crumpled hills, fields dotted with farmsteads, and low-lying coastal settlements.

Magical, medieval, and modern

Founded by Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997, Trondheim today is Norway’s third largest city and a mix of historic buildings and a vibrant student population.

You’ll have three hours to explore Trondheim and its array of highlights, either by yourself or on one of the optional excursions we offer.

A must-see site of the city is Nidaros Cathedral, nicknamed “Norway’s Notre Dame” for its Gothic style and considered the most sacred building in all of Norway. Next door to the cathedral is the Archbishop’s Palace where Norway’s crown jewels are on display.

Nearby, the old city bridge Gamle Bybro sits over Nid River, marking the entrance to the old Hanseatic district of Bakklandet. The neighbourhood’s colourful wooden wharves propped up on stilts by the river’s edge now house a variety of eateries. Up from Bakklandet is Kristiansten Fort which has beautiful panoramas of the city and fjord.

Back on board

In the afternoon, the ship sails northwest, passing the ochre-coloured Kjeungskjær Lighthouse, islets, and rocky reefs. After that, we head towards charming Rørvik .

Kristiansund : 02:45 - 03:00

Trondheim : 09:45 - 12:45

Rørvik : 21:40 - 22:00

The Norwegian port town of Stamsund

Into the Arctic

We cross the  Arctic Circle  early in the morning, marking the moment with a traditional ceremony that’s sure to wake you up!

Above the Arctic Circle, you can see the sun 24 hours a day in summer, while in winter, your chances of seeing the Northern Lights greatly improve.

Forces of nature

At 10am, we call into Ørnes, near to Norway’s second-largest glacier,  Svartisen . The pier here is popular for the  Love Bench  where sweethearts have declared their lasting romance with a padlock.

We then sail to Bodø, the second-largest city in Northern Norway, overlooked by the Børvass peaks. Admire fabulous street art or join an optional boat excursion to  Saltstraumen , the world’s most powerful maelstrom.

Welcome to Lofoten

That afternoon, the ship enters the Lofoten archipelago. The 1,000 metre-high  Lofoten Wall  is a stunning sight that stretches for miles on the horizon.

Stamsund  is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the islands and busiest between January and April when Arctic cod, known locally as  skrei , swim from the Barents Sea in the north down to Vestfjord to spawn.

Come evening, when you see rows of traditional fisherman’s huts on stilts, known as  rorbuer , you’ve arrived in the pretty harbour of  Svolvær , the main town of the Lofoten Islands and where your voyage with us this time ends.

We have several ships in the fleet that we travel with.

MS Kong Harald, Brønnøysund, Norway

MS Kong Harald

Norway’s reigning monarch, a seasoned sailor, lends his name to this remarkable hybrid vessel.

3000x3000_ms-nordkapp-norway-hgr-58654-photo_guest_images

MS Nordkapp

MS Nordkapp is named after the northernmost point on mainland Europe: North Cape (71ºN) - one of the geographical highpoints you can visit on a Hurtigruten voyage.

MS Nordlys Torghatten Norway HGR 130574 Fuglefjellet

Both the name and the interior design of this modern ship are inspired by the spectacular Northern Lights.
