Information: Very heavy congestion on M62 Eastbound at Junction 20 due to workforce on the road. Down to one lane out of four. Best to turn off and look for an alternative route.

WITHOUT a doubt. the people who the overhead gantry signs in the greater Manchester are the most incompetent lot of articles i have ever come across. Take W/E 15 17 OCT. I tried to get home from A627M from the ROYTON ROUNDABOUT. about midnight on 15/10/2021. i found the whole roundabout down to one lane the slip road entrance to the A627M was blocked off . AS USUAL no warnings of any sort of the SIGNS on THE MOTORWAY M62 EAST or anywhere else. LAST FRIDAY 22/2021 IT GOT WORST driving from J17 WHITEFIELD TO J20 EAST i went of the M62 to the roundabout expecting to travel along the A 627M TO OLDHAM i found the entrance to the A627M OLDHAM was blocked off. not one warning sign on the M60 OR M62 EAST. it got worse on my way home from ROYTON i found the entrance to the A627M TOWARDS J20 WEST blocked off. it was about midnight. So PICKED UP THE M62 WEST AT HEYWOOD. on my way home to J17 at WHITEFIELD. guest what J17 SLIP ROAD WAS CLOSED. not one warning sign was lit up i was trying to get home to WHITEFIELD. The people of PRESTWITCH AND WHITEFIELD has suffer 6 years of misery while these motorways were turned into smart motorways. it is still going on. some of it was caused by the people giving out the info of the motorway closures . they caused chaos with misleading information caused accidents when they put out warning signs -motorways closed when they were open. motorways open A ND when motorways open when they were closed. Take J17 M60 EAST/WEST it has been the most shut down than any other part of the whole motorway system most cases no warning signs on these clever brightly lit matrix information. EVEN now i travel the M60/M62 EAST WEST and what do i see. warnings signs lit up telling people of roadworks ahead on M1 M6 hundreds of miles away from my area when they can not even tell us what is happening in the local area. a few weeks ago i went east from J17 TO J20 about 9pm as i past J18 the overhead gantries were lit up warning drivers to slow down, as there were 3 lanes closed it showed 3 lanes with red crosses on eveybody slowed down. a queue formed. A couple of miles down the road the 3 lanes were never shut down. The bloody warning signs had been left on from an earlier incident do you see what i am getting at ANYHOW whose bothered hundreds of millions of pounds has been spent on these motorways. it is only taxpayers money no one regulates how it is spent. if these things keep happening it does not matter there is plenty more money where thay comes from/

Oldham travel firm boss - holidaymakers are ready for lift-off

Date published: 25 July 2020

Don Bircham from Hays Travel North West

Don Bircham from Hays Travel North West

A local travel company boss revealed he’s reopened his shop in Oldham after returning from a fact-finding mission to Spain.

Don Bircham and Ruth Ward of Hays Travel North West say the visit to stay in an apartment near Calle de Mijas, 20 minutes from Marbella, had given them renewed confidence the industry will bounce back from the coronavirus crisis in the long-term.

Earlier this year the couple celebrated 20 years in the business and said the fact they were a successful, stable business would stand them in good stead in recovering from the Covid-19 disaster.

The company’s shops are spread across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales.

Bookings nose-dived to five per cent of their normal level after the lockdown was imposed, but the business is taking off again after so-called air bridges to popular European destinations including Spain were established.

They’re now back up to 60 per cent of the seasonal average – and rising.

According to Mr Bircham, there was a huge pent up demand from their customers who were desperate for a break in the sun.

It was, he said, vital for him to understand more about the “new normal” in Spanish resorts which continued to be hugely popular with their customers.

Mr Bircham said: “We always need to know our product inside out so we can give our customers the best insight and advice – but it’s especially important now to get a feel for the whole experience, in terms of the airport, the flight, the accommodation and of course what it’s like in the resort itself.

“I'm delighted to say that every single aspect of the week was very positive.

“We flew from Liverpool to Malaga with Ryan Air.

"The car parks are significantly quieter so we were able to park directly opposite to the terminal and the airport experience couldn’t have been better.

“We put our masks on as soon as we entered the terminal and security was really very similar to before other than the fact that with the queue was socially distanced.

“It was pretty straight forward. There were fewer shops open in the terminal building but you could still grab a coffee and a sandwich.

“Our flight was about 70 per cent full at the way out and about 50 per cent full at the way back and there is absolutely no problems on the aircraft wearing your mask.

"It's all very easy, it's all very organised.

“In the resort I can't emphasise how wonderful it is. It’s just so easy.

"The only noticeable difference is that everybody keeps their mask in their pocket.

“The only time we wore a mask was walking into a supermarket and walking into a bar and restaurant.

"But the minute you're in the bar and restaurant it can be taken off immediately.

“The beaches are still great but they're obviously quieter which is not  necessarily a bad thing in one sense. It's fantastic.

"The Spanish people were delighted to see us and it’s even cheaper than normal.

“You could tell it was a real pleasure they were beginning to see a trickle of tourists arriving and those numbers progressively growing every day.

"They're doing everything to make them welcome.

“There are plenty of good offers. You can get a meal deal there for nine Euros per head for three courses with a drink.

"There is no issue with the swimming pools – you just sanitise your hands and feet before and after.

“The trip has given me a lot of peace of mind.

"There has never been a better time to go. You'll have a great break.”

After the Covid-19 pandemic struck, Hays Travel put 80 per cent of their 220 staff on furlough and closed all 39 branches.

The remainder of the staff worked from home dealing with live bookings, alterations and cancellations.

The UK Government’s Job Retention Scheme had been a “real blessing” because it enabled the company to retain  staff throughout and meant they were well-placed to cater for the surge in demand.

Mother’s Day is Doubly Celebrated at This Travel Agency

Mother’s Day is Doubly Celebrated at This Travel Agency

Beth Stubbs (Center) with her daughters Jenny Oldham (Right) and Heather Haynes (Left) and grandaughters at Disney World.

Mother’s Day is always a special celebration in the travel agency profession. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that about 85 percent of professional advisors are female.

At Premier Travel Escapes, in Jacksonville, Florida, this Sunday will be a double celebration for Jenny Oldham. In February, Oldham added her first full-time employee – her recently retired mother Beth Stubbs – adding the skills and knowledge Oldham needs to expand her corporate travel business, and take Premier to the next level.

“I was grooming her to come aboard for a while,” said Oldham, president and sole proprietor at Premier. Stubbs worked for about 20 years as an executive administrative assistant for the top-tier executives of a local development firm. She gained extensive experience arranging corporate meetings and events, including choosing venues, negotiating contracts, and handling logistics on site.

Meetings and incentives is “a good portion” of Premier’s business, Oldham said, and she has been looking to grow that side for several years. “It seemed like a natural fit to have Beth come on,” said Oldham.

“Jenny’s been dropping hints for years,” said Stubbs, Premier’s newly appointed vice president, corporate meetings and events.

Three months into this new phase of their relationship, Oldham and Stubbs are seeing the benefits both personally and professionally. Stubbs is helping to grow Premier’s corporate travel and meetings business, while also filling in for Oldham when she needs to travel.

Meanwhile, Oldham is teaching her mother the ins and outs of leisure travel, as well as the industry’s technology tools – like the agency’s TESS customer relationship management (CRM) software.

“When you own your own small business, you need to have that trust factor with anyone you bring on. I can’t just let anyone come in and have access to critical information like my CRM,” Oldham said. “To have that immediate trust in somebody, because you have known them your whole life, makes such a big difference.”

“It’s worked out perfectly, so far,” said Stubbs. “I have admired Jenny for what she has accomplished, building this business from scratch. Not a lot of people have the opportunity like I do to work alongside her, and help her grow the business more.”

Motherhood always at the core of Premier Travel Oldham has owned Premier Travel for about ten years, starting the firm to fit her busy life raising two girls. “When I had my first daughter, I wanted to work from home,” Oldham recalled. She eventually started her own home-based agency for the flexibility. Like most start-up agents, Oldham mostly booked vacations for family and close friends those first few years.

After her second daughter was born and the girls were in school, “I was putting myself out there more, and the business started growing,” Oldham said last year was a “banner year,” notching enough sales to make her one of Travel Planners International’s (TPI) top 2018 travel agency producers.

“This year will be even better, and I realized I need more help. That is where I can pass off the corporate room block and meeting business to mom,” Oldham said.

“If she can take more of that, I can take on more of the family travel and luxury travel sales, because that is my favorite thing to do,” Oldham said.

Having Stubbs onboard also helps with being an entrepreneur and mother. “If I have a meeting and I need to be there, I’ll call my mom and ask her if she can pick the girls up from school, or take them to an activity they have,” Oldham said.

“And I’ll jump in the car and go get them. We have the relationship to do that. I don’t feel like an employee. I’m her mom,” Stubbs said.

Helping each other grow Premier’s corporate business is mostly focused on smaller groups, about 20 attendees or less. Managing very senior executives, and often boards of directors, Premier is working with five-star hotels and resorts, and offers high-touch service for trip elements like flights and transfers.

“These meetings definitely take a lot more time and effort, because of who you are dealing with,” Oldham said. “Beth has done this for 20 years, so she understands what goes into satisfying these clients.”

For example, many corporate clients want an onsite meetings manager to handle logistics, solve issues with food and beverage, and keep the meeting running smoothly. “I couldn’t do that with two children and grow that part of my business,” Oldham said.

Meanwhile, Stubbs likes having someone who can help her think differently for her corporate clients. “Two heads are better than one,” she said of her daughter, who has extensive corporate travel and meetings experience, as well. “It’s easier to come up with ideas for clients brainstorming with someone you respect and trust. I bounce things off of her all of the time.”

“We complement each other from our past experiences,” Oldham said.

Additionally, Stubbs is learning the leisure side of the business. “It takes a lot of time to book vacations. Jenny has repeat customers and built her business from word of mouth because she does a wonderful job with them. I didn’t realize what that takes until I got into the business.”

Trust also gives Oldham the ability to take more fam trips, and attend TPI and industry events. While on a recent AmaWaterways business trip in Europe, Oldham received an adventure travel inquiry to California. Stubbs took the call, and booked the woman and her companion on an active travel trip that will include whale watching in San Francisco and hiking in Yosemite.

Not for everyone While working together has drawn mom and daughter even closer, parent/child working partnerships might not be for everyone, Oldham cautions.

“You have to have a strong relationship to begin with to go into business together. We have always been really close. We have a tight-knit family. If we didn’t get along well to begin with, I’m not sure this would work,” she said.

“I see how Jenny handles her clients, vendors, her business, along with her children,” Stubbs said. “I always admired how she has taken care of her girls.”

That mutual admiration translates to a collegial workplace, mom and daughter said. “You are working together constantly, texting, on the phone, email back and forth. You need the camaraderie in place to make that work,” Oldham said.

“Some of the systems, like the cruise booking tools, take time to learn,” Oldham said. Working with her mom has reminded Oldham of how long it took to develop the expertise and efficiency she has today. “I have to be patient. It took me ten years to get to this level.”

“TESS — there is a learning curve to that,” Stubbs said laughing. “Jenny probably rolls her eyes when I call her a second or third time when I am working on it.”

Oldham isn’t sure yet how large she can grow this business. “We’re setting some realistic goals, and will see what it takes to get there. Then decide.”

“We may need more employees at some point. I’m thinking about it, testing the waters,” said Oldham, whose sister (who also has two daughters), works as a speech pathologist. “She isn’t currently looking to join the travel agency business, though she has our work ethic, so she could fit in well.”

“I have friends that tell me all the time, ‘I would love to come work for you.’ But it takes a lot of training,” Oldham said. “With my mom coming on, since she had that corporate perspective, flights, groups, it made it so much easier to expand.”

For the short-term, Premier will remain a mother/daughter combo.

More than 100 candidates are jostling for residents’ votes in the local elections in Oldham this year - where one third of seats are up for grabs. All twenty wards will have to choose a candidate to fill the position for the next four years.

Currently, the town is made up of 31 Labour councillors, ten Liberal Democrats , eight Conservatives and a total of nine Independent councillors, some of which are associated with the Failsworth Independents, Oldham Group and Independent Group.

These figures recently changed, with a number of councillors switching allegiances shortly before the election period. Councillors Nyla Ibrahim and Shoab Akhtar decided to leave the Labour party on Friday (April 6), as the candidates list was being finalised. Earlier this year, independent councillor Aftab Hussain switched to Labour.

The current political make-up means Oldham Labour have a majority of only one council seat. If they lose one councill overall, this would mean there is ‘No Overall Control’ in the council.

In this year’s election, held on Thursday May 2, there are 20 Lib Dems candidates, 19 Conservatives, 19 Labour, seven Greens and 35 Independents and candidates from other smaller parties like Reform UK.

Voter registration closes on at midnight on Tuesday, April 16. Under new government legislation, voters must also now show photo ID when voting in person, as you will be turned away without this.

If you do not currently have an accepted form of photo ID such as a passport or driving licence, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate before 5pm on April 24. The deadline to register to vote by post is 5pm on Wednesday, April 17 while the deadline to register online for a proxy vote is 5pm on Wednesday, April 24.

The full list of candidates has now been published by Oldham council:

The Amplifier

A solar eclipse soundtrack.

Songs from TV on the Radio, Brian Eno, Julianna Barwick and others than could well accompany the celestial event on Monday.

  • Share full article

An orange dotted line.

By Lindsay Zoladz

Dear listeners,

As you have probably heard, on Monday most people in the United States will be able to witness a solar eclipse that will plunge an ordinary afternoon into otherworldly darkness. Such events require planning. Where are you going to watch the eclipse? Who are you going to watch it with? And, most crucially for Amplifier purposes, what will you listen to during it?

Today’s playlist aims to get you in the mood for this rare cosmic event. It features atmospheric ambient music from Brian Eno and Julianna Barwick as well as ethereal jazz from Alice Coltrane and Amaro Freitas . I also included a few songs that refer to moons and darkness, from Cat Stevens and Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie “Prince” Billy , though I stopped just short of adding Bonnie Tyler ’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” because I have at least some restraint.

As far as solar eclipses go, this one is relatively long: Along the totality line , the moon will block out the sun for about four minutes and 28 seconds. A few songs on this playlist run for approximately that duration, so if you press play on, say, Eno’s “An Ending (Ascent)” as soon as the eclipse begins, it can soundtrack the entire experience. If you want to take in the moment in reverent silence, though, I fully support that; this playlist will be here when the eclipse is over, if you want to extend the astronomical vibe. And if you want to spend your eclipse listening to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” ? Well, that’s your decision, not mine.

I do love the feeling of human interconnectedness that occurs during an eclipse, though. There’s something powerful about knowing that millions of people in all sorts of locations will be stopping what they’re doing and perhaps reflecting on the fact that, for all our differences, we’re all living under the same sky. Who knows? Maybe some of us will even be listening to the same music.

I’m being followed by a moonshadow,

Listen along while you read.

1. brian eno: “an ending (ascent)”.

Originally written for the documentary “For All Mankind,” a majestically photographed film about the Apollo space program, the ambient music pioneer Brian Eno ’s “An Ending (Ascent)” has since been used on the soundtracks for plenty of other films, including “Traffic” and “28 Days Later.” It would also be a fitting accompaniment for a solar eclipse, not only because it conjures a feeling of celestial awe, but also because, at four minutes and 26 seconds, it will last roughly the same amount of time as the totality. ▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

2. Amaro Freitas featuring Brandee Younger: “Gloriosa”

I’ve been listening quite a bit lately to “Y’Y,” the new album by the sonically adventurous Brazilian jazz pianist Amaro Freitas, whose music is at once traditionally minded and forward-thinking. Here, he is joined by the harpist Brandee Younger, who adds some lunar opalescence to his sound.

▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

3. Alice Coltrane featuring Pharoah Sanders: “Journey in Satchidananda”

Alice Coltrane’s luminous harp scatters stardust across this free-form composition — the title track off her great 1971 album — while Pharoah Sanders’s saxophone playing unfurls like one long ribbon of gold. Like much of Coltrane’s work, it’s appropriate music for an encounter with the sublime.

4. Will Oldham: “I See a Darkness”

If you’re looking for a moody and vaguely gothic eclipse soundtrack, I recommend this subtle, stirring ballad by the folk singer-songwriter Will Oldham, who often records as Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Though Johnny Cash popularized the song when he covered it on his 2000 album, “American III: Solitary Man,” I’m partial to the cracked beauty of the original.

5. Cat Stevens: “Moonshadow”

Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf Islam) said that this song came to him one night on vacation in Spain, when the moon was particularly bright. But, technically, this song’s title could describe a solar eclipse, which occurs, according to NASA , when “the Moon casts a shadow on the Earth, and blocks or partially blocks our view of the Sun.”

6. John Cale: “Big White Cloud”

Though it’s about a different kind of sky phenomenon, everything feels like a slow-motion reverie when this track from John Cale’s 1970 solo debut, “Vintage Violence,” is playing. “The sound of sun, piercing my eyes,” Cale sings. “Everything’s clear, everything’s bright.”

7. TV on the Radio: “Staring at the Sun”

On this single from the 2004 album “Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes,” the Brooklyn band TV on the Radio describes exactly what you should not do during a solar eclipse — unless you have special glasses or a homemade pinhole projector.

8. Julianna Barwick: “Sunlight, Heaven”

Finally, from her dreamlike 2009 EP, “Florine,” Julianna Barwick’s ethereal composition helps you welcome the light back into your life. Here comes the sun indeed!

A trip to Moscow

I'm going to organize a trip this summer. I want to plan everything. I’ll fly from London to Moscow, and I also want to visit St. Petersburg. Could you, please, advise me what places I should visit? I’ll stay in Moscow for about 10 days before going to St. Petersburg. Thank you!

Not a country I’d be spending my money in at the moment.

Ditto. Ditto!

I don't really see the point of shunning a country because you don't agree with its leader and/or its government. Would you go to Italy? China? Tourist dollars are more likely to get into the hands of the people rather than any corrupt bureaucracy and meeting friendly tourists might just change the locals opinions of foreigners and even give them some information they don't get from local news media.

Hopefully , I won't be starting a war here , but I must say I agree with Chani's comments . Having taken three year visas in 2015 , we have been to Moscow and St; Petersburg ( once to Moscow , and twice to St Petersburg ) . The History , Art , Music ( I am a classically trained musician ) and Culture , fascinate us . Much to experience there and advance preparation is essential , To get a good grounding for your visit , read this lavish and detailed book by Suzanne Massie , it's one of the best ways to immerse yourself in what you will experience - https://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-Beauty-Old-Russia/dp/096441841X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1521652009&sr=8-1&keywords=land+of+the+firebird+massie&dpID=51CPK13XKGL&preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

And while leaders of such countries can point to foreign visitor numbers as a sign of support ? I also believe that personal safety for certain travellers, especially obvious minorities, cannot be guaranteed, as fervent nationalism increases, and tolerance levels evaporate. Just as I may decide against a purchase at the supermarket because of a company’s behaviour, ethics will always be a consideration.

Well, I'd argue supermarket ethics does not readily translate to travel ethics - the latter is far more complex. Personally, I see the whole "vote with my hard-earned travel dollar" approach as overly simplistic, but if it's your position - I totally respect it.

What I don't understand is members volunteering ethical guidance in response to what seems an innocuous request for travel-related information.

Note a discussion on ethics hosted a year ago by the Webmaster of this very forum.

https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/general-europe/travel-ethics-612334a0-0ca1-4128-b088-c13d1d8a91c3

I appreciate Rick Steves' point of view in his "Travel As A Political Act". That said, Putin's Russia is not a place I would support. But, to each his or her own....

From a practical point of view, travel between the two countries can be difficult. I understand the Russians who traveled in the US this past winter had to go to the US Embassy in the country of Georgia to get visas because the Russians expelled American embassy personnel. If you do travel to Russia, you may be on your own. See the American travel advisory: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/russia-travel-advisory.html

Travel Advisory January 10, 2018 Russia – Level 3: Reconsider travel Reconsider travel to Russia due to terrorism and harassment. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory U.S. citizens are often victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion by law-enforcement and other officials. U.S. consular assistance to detained individuals is often unreasonably delayed by Russian officials. Russia also enforces special restrictions on dual U.S.-Russian nationals. Due to the Russian government-imposed reduction on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, the U.S. government has reduced ability to provide services to U.S. citizens.

We have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg over the past few years. As in the US, most of the people we encountered helpful and not particularly political. In Moscow, we stayed at The Garden Ring Hotel which was a close walk to the metro. The hotel was very comfortable and quiet for being in the city. We loved the art museums and the Georgian restaurants. In St. Petersburg, we stayed at both The 3Mosta hotel near the Hermitage and the Art Hotel Demetra.. In St. Petersburg, we especially liked the Hermitage and Russian museum. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet and having a good map is a must.

As I think the point about ethical considerations has been made, please keep future replies more specific to the question at hand. Thanks.

Either read a good travel book or book a guide who can personally take you to the best places that interest you and tell about the sights you're seeing. We used Dan Petrov on 2 different trips to Moscow and found him to be wonderfully friendly and witty not to mention super knowledgeable.

Latest advice, Australian Governmemt, 1 April 2018. “Due to heightened political tensions, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-Western sentiment or harassment. While the Australian Government is not aware of any increased difficulties for Australians travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice. Remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.”

We very much enjoyed our group trip to Moscow and St Petersburg last year. excellent guides and accommodations. While Steven who has replied here has excellent advice, ( and we took advantage of it), we felt an organized tour really facilitated our enjoyment of the country. You may want to consider a combination of an organized tour and than adding independent days . Some of the Australians on the tour had arrived a couple of days earlier than the tour stated and then some stayed later. If we were to go again (which I would), that"s how I would do it. And I must say , it was enlightening to have conversations with the Russian tour guides and the non Americans about the current world situation. Not that we went into any great depth, but I think we all went away with a little more understanding. Top places: allow lots of time in St Petersburg at the Hermitage- take a separate day for the Impressionist building. In Moscow, the Russian Art Museum was amazing.

Solid advice from Australian government quoted above, especially the keeping up to date part.

I checked the current version (Sep 18) of that advisory - and it hasn't been updated much. In fact, some sections don't seem to have changed since 2005 - their recommendations for importing/exporting currency and financial instruments, for example, are at least five years behind.

I do like reading governmental travel advisories for entertainment purposes - for instance, up until very recently the US one sternly advised potential travelers that Moscow was largely a cash-based economy (couldn't be further from the truth) and warned about intrinsic dangers of gypsy cabs (which had all but disappeared by 2015).

A man suspected of stabbing a mother to death in Bradford city centre was on bail at the time for allegedly threatening to kill her, it has emerged.

West Yorkshire Police have launched a manhunt for Habibur Masum - who is wanted on suspicion of murdering 27-year-old Kulsuma Akter while she pushed her baby in a pram on Saturday.

According to the PA news agency, Masum was conditionally bailed in November after being charged with assaulting and threatening to kill Ms Akter - who is from Oldham, Greater Manchester.

Both offences were alleged to have happened in Manchester.

Court documents seen by PA say the 25-year-old man had pleaded not guilty to both offences at a hearing on 27 November and was ordered by Manchester Magistrates' Court not to contact Ms Akter.

Masum's bail conditions also prevented him from contacting a second unnamed person or visiting a particular address.

West Yorkshire Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) watchdog as they had previous contact with Ms Akter.

Greater Manchester Police also referred themselves to the IOPC because they had contact with both Masum and Ms Akter.

West Yorkshire Police said earlier that Ms Akter was attacked at around 3.20pm on Saturday while with her baby in the Westgate area of Bradford city centre.

Assistant Chief Constable Damien Miller said in a press conference: "Despite the best efforts of members of the public, ambulance crews and hospital staff, Kulsuma sadly lost her life due to the injuries.

"Her baby is safe and well and was not harmed in this incident."

Officers searching for Masum say they have carried out "a number of raids" in Burnley, Oldham, and Chester, as part of the investigation.

West Yorkshire Police arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender as a result of the search but said the hunt continues for the suspect, who has links to Burnley and Chester.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Masum studied for a masters in marketing and digital marketing at the University of Bedfordshire between 2021 and 2023.

His Facebook page states he is from Sylhet, Bangladesh, and he is believed to be in the UK on a student visa, and later a post-graduate visa after he obtained his degree.

According to officers, Masum was last seen wearing a duffle coat with three large horizontal lines, grey tracksuit bottoms and maroon trainers.

A witness also told West Yorkshire Police they saw him wearing a grey hoodie with the hood up.

Officers said Masum was seen on CCTV getting on a bus on Market Street in Bradford at 3.30pm on Saturday.

The last confirmed sighting of the suspect was when he exited the bus at 3.42pm on Killinghall Road and walked in the direction of Bradford Moor Park.

Assistant Chief Constable Miller added: "I believe him to still be in the country at this moment in time."

Greater Manchester Police say they are assisting West Yorkshire Police with their investigation.

"Due to his links to Greater Manchester, we have our specialist officers following several lines of enquiry to locate him," said Detective Superintendent Jude Holmes from the force's Oldham district.

"I urge members of the public to remain vigilant, and if you have any information on his whereabouts, call 999 as a matter of urgency."

Friday crash on I-40 impacts traffic east of Adrian, DPS confirms 2 deaths

Update: 4/14/23 3:39 p.m.

OLDHAM COUNTY, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Department of Public Safety released the names of the two people who died as a result of a multi-vehicle wreck that involved five vehicles.

According to DPS, two truck drivers involved in the multi-vehicle wreck died while four other people were injured and another person was uninjured. The first driver involved in the crash, Paul Espinoza, 38, Phoenix, Ariz., driver of a Freightliner truck was pronounced dead on the scene, as well as another Freightliner truck driver, Artoosh Amirjanian, 61, Glendale, Calif., by Kristy O’Malley, Oldham County Justice of the Peace.

DPS officials said Espinoza was traveling west on I-40 in the outside lane. The third driver involved in the wreck was driving a 2019 Ford ambulance with a passenger traveling west on I-40 behind the 2008 Audi that was taken with the tractor-trailer into the center median.

DPS officials also said a 2021 Volvo truck towing a semi-trailer, was traveling east on I-40 in the outside lane. Amirjanian was traveling east on I-40 behind the Volvo truck. The Audi moved over into the inside lane and began passing Espinoza. While the Audi was passing Espinoza, Espinoza veered to the left for an unknown reason and struck and pushed the Audi with the truck. Espinoza traveled across the center median, into the eastbound lanes, and into the driver of the Volvo truck, while still pushing the Audi with it. The driver of the Volvo truck remained uninjured in the wreck.

According to DPS officials, the driver of the Volvo truck took evasive action but was unable to avoid the collision. Espinoza pushed the Audi into the left side of the Volvo truck’s semi-trailer. Espinoza then struck the left side of the Volvo truck’s semi-trailer. Espinoza continued to travel westbound in the eastbound lanes until colliding head-on with another Freightliner truck driven by Amirjanian.

Due to the impact, both the Freightliner trucks and the 2008 Audi caught fire. DPS officials said that at some point during the collision, a tire from one of the units was launched and struck the ambulance.

The ambulance was not directly involved in the crash; however, officials said it will be listed as a non-contact unit on the official crash report since it was struck with debris.

DPS officials also said bystanders and occupants from the ambulance assisted with getting the passengers out of the 2008 Audi before it became fully engulfed with flames.

The driver of the ambulance sustained minor injuries and was transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital, where they were treated and released. The passenger of the ambulance sustained minor injuries and was transported to the same hospital where they were also treated and released, said DPS officials.

Further, DPS officials said the driver of the 2008 Audi and the passenger both sustained serious injuries. The driver was transported by air to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital while the passenger was transported by ambulance.

The Texas Highway Patrol Troopers investigated this wreck.

Update: 3:26 p.m.

OLDHAM COUNTY, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Texas Department of Public Safety reports that preliminary reports show that two people have died as a result of a multiple-vehicle wreck west of Vega.

According to DPS, preliminary reports show that a tractor-trailer going west went into the center median taking a passenger vehicle with it before hitting two other tractor-trailers in the eastbound lane of I-40.

DPS officials said two people were confirmed dead and an unknown number of people were taken to the hospital.

DPS said both lanes of I-40 west of Vega are shut down. Officials are advising that drivers stay off of I-40 west of Vega and find alternate routes.

Original Story

OLDHAM COUNTY, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – According to an update from the Texas Department of Transportation Highway Conditions Map, an accident on I-40 just east of Adrian on Friday afternoon has significantly impacted both eastbound and westbound traffic.

Suspect in stabbing of Kulsuma Akter was on bail over alleged threat to kill her

Habibur Masum was previously charged with assault and threatening to kill 27-year-old who was stabbed to death in Bradford on Saturday

A woman who was stabbed to death while pushing her baby in a pram in Bradford city centre has been identified, as it emerged her suspected attacker is on bail for allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill her.

West Yorkshire police on Monday named the victim as Kulsuma Akter, aged 27, who died on Saturday.

The suspect, who remains on the run, has been identified as Habibur Masum, 25, who is from the Oldham area and has links to Burnley and Chester. The victim and suspect were known to each other.

Masum was conditionally bailed at Manchester magistrates court in November despite prosecutors objecting to his release. He pleaded not guilty to two charges at the hearing in November and was ordered not to contact Akter.

Masum’s bail conditions also prevented him from contacting a second person or visiting a particular address.

Court documents show that he was charged with threatening to kill Akter on 24 November and with assaulting her on 23 November. Both offences were alleged to have happened in Manchester.

At a press conference on Monday, it was revealed that Masum was known to police and that Akter had had previous contact with officers. Two forces have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Police said they had arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of assisting an offender and he remained in custody.

West Yorkshire assistant chief constable Damien Miller said there had been a “number of raids” carried out by police in Burnley, Chester and Oldham and it was during those searches that an arrest was made.

Miller said Akter was stabbed to death in the Westgate area of Bradford city centre on Saturday afternoon. She was pushing her baby when she was attacked and stabbed multiple times.

“The emergency services were called at 3.21pm,” Miller said. “However, despite the best efforts of members of the public, ambulance crews and hospital staff, Kulsuma sadly lost her life due to the injuries.

“Her baby is safe and well and was not harmed in this incident.”

Miller said Masum was last seen walking in the direction of a park having got off a bus.

“Masum is a slim Asian man and was last seen wearing a duffel coat with three large horizontal lines, grey tracksuit bottoms and maroon trainers,” he said.

“On Saturday he was captured on CCTV getting on a bus. He was last seen walking in the direction of Bradford Moor Park. This is our last confirmed sighting of him.”

Miller said a significant amount of resources were going into the search, which includes examining CCTV and conducting house-to-house inquiries. “We also have local Bradford officers carrying out increased patrols in the area, which I hope will be of some reassurance to residents,” he said.

Greater Manchester police said it has referred itself to the IOPC over previous contact with the victim and the suspect.

Det Supt Jude Holmes, from GMP Oldham district, said: “We share the shock and concern that our communities feel in the wake of this tragic incident, and our thoughts are with Kulsuma Akter’s family at this truly distressing time.

“Habibur Masum is wanted by West Yorkshire police on suspicion of murder. Due to his links to Greater Manchester, we have our specialist officers following several lines of inquiry to locate him.

“I urge members of the public to remain vigilant, and if you have any information on his whereabouts, call 999 as a matter of urgency.

“Due to previous police contact with Habibur Masum and Kulsuma Akter, Greater Manchester police has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”

Miller said West Yorkshire police had previous contact with the victim and had referred itself to the IOPC as a result.

Renewing his appeal to the public for information, he said: “I believe him to still be in the country at this moment in time.”

Masum is believed to be from Bangladesh and was in the UK on a student visa, and later a postgraduate visa after he obtained his degree. According to his LinkedIn profile, he studied for a master’s in marketing and digital marketing at the University of Bedfordshire between 2021 and 2023.

A shopkeeper who tried to help Akter after the stabbing described how there was nothing that could be done to save her life.

Geo Khan said: “I was sitting in my shop and heard screaming. I came out and I tried to check the pulse. There was no pulse.

“Blood was all over on the floor and there were stab wounds in her neck.”

Khan said he was joined by a passing doctor who took over trying to help the woman, but agreed there was no pulse.

“Him and me and another guy tried to rescue her, but she was already gone,” Khan said. “Whatever happened, it’s a very sad thing.”
