Pangarchulla Peak Trek: Who Is This Trek Meant For?

Neeti singhal.

Taking you through Nanda Devi National Park, the Pangarchulla Peak Trek is the perfect union of beauty and challenge. You witness some mesmerizing landscapes - from magical views of all the revered mountains in the Uttarakhand region to massive expanses of oak and pine forests followed by large meadows and of course some snow and big boulders, Pangarchulla's got it all!

A difficult trek, one requiring strength and endurance, Pangarchulla is a perfect introductory peak in case you want to up your trekking game by a notch or three. It is also a preparatory peak for those who want to take up climbing bigger and higher mountains. It serves the function of testing waters before jumping in the pool head-first.

Do not be fooled by its height, though. A climb up this little peak is nothing to throw a stick at. Altitude is only one kind of challenge in the Himalayas. Pangarchulla , at a humble height of 4481M introduces you to difficulties other than altitude and thin air that make the climb a rewarding endeavour. Some say it's even harder to scale than some of the more prominent 6000M peaks like Stok Kangri and Kang Yatse II .

This article discusses the difficulty level of Pangarchulla trek, the gear and skills you require to make a successful ascent up its unusual terrain and some of the challenges you are likely to encounter when you embark on this journey.

Difficulty Level of the Trek:

Pangarchulla Peak is a level 5 trek on the  Bikat Rating Scale .

About the BRS:  The Bikat Rating Scale rates the difficulty level of all treks and expeditions in our portfolio after taking into account their geographical and climatic conditions.

According to this scale, if you are a beginner who is unsure of your fitness level and don’t know what to expect on a trek, a trek rated one will be a good place to start.

If you liked your very first trekking experience and are looking to test your limits next, the treks rated 2 or 3 will do the job for you.

A beginner who is sure of their fitness level on the other hand is welcome to skip the first two levels and directly start with one of the treks rated 3.

From 4 onwards, the rules change a little. It is mandatory to have trekking experience of the previous level to participate in the next level.

The Trails of Pangarchulla Peak:

Although not identified as a technical peak, Pangarchulla presents you with an assortment of terrain, gradient and environment which is easier to navigate if you have some of the basic technical skills required in the mountains. If you are not overly familiar with mountaineering equipment and techniques, however, there is absolutely no need to worry! As a learning-based organization, we will be providing you with the equipment and training needed to use them during the trek. Nonetheless, it helps to know the challenges you are likely to encounter if you decide to undertake this journey. Let us help acquaint you to some exciting difficulties which make the trek challenging as well as fun!

Challenge 1: Getting to the Trail Head :

If you live away from the North of India, travelling to the Himalayas comes with an enormous cost in terms of time and money. And access to Pangarchulla is an investment in terms of time required to get to its base. The trailhead, Joshimath, is not directly accessible by trains or air travel. This means it takes an entire day to reach Joshimath from the closest city (Dehradun and Rishikesh).

If you are starting your journey from Dehradun, be prepared to gain quite a bit of altitude (430 M to 1,890 M) on the first day. Since we are moving upwards fairly quickly, acclimatization is crucial to completion of the trek and a safe return.

The weather on the trail of Pangarchulla has a way of surprising us too. With its sudden twists, we never know when we will be hit by our next snow storm, a sway of high winds or torrential rains - which makes the trek thrilling while also adding to its level of difficulty. This constantly changing weather makes adapting to newer heights a tricky business. The battle against altitude is not one you would want to take lightly on Pangarchulla.

Do remember to drink lots of water, layer up as instructed by the leader and take the climb at your own pace. These simple but effective strategies can help keep all altitude related discomforts at bay.

Challenge 2: Nature of the climb :

Known as the perfect trek to move up from trekking to mountaineering, the peak serves as a practice ground for a mildly technical and extremely steep climb. It introduces you to challenges that have a way of pushing you outside your comfort zone. The mountain also hand-delivers a lesson in the importance of softer skills like working together as a team. Even seemingly simple tasks like walking will get reassessed when you find yourself in the peculiar terrain that the extremely long summit push on the peak serves to you.

During snow time, it is a mystery what kind of snow or ice you will find on the trail. In case of fresh snow, the challenges are different as against those you might face when the snow is slushy or is hard ice. While this leaves you with little or no chance to pre-prepare your mind for the nature of your climb to the summit, it also keeps things fresh and mystical. This is during the months of March and April.

During winters, the challenges are completely the opposite – the lack of snow or ice. By the winter season, which is between the months of October and December, most of the snow from the previous season has already melted. The melted snow leaves in its wake a long stretch of exposed boulders as big as dreams. Climbing on ice is challenging but climbing on boulders with massive gaps in between needs a different set of skills and a mix of patience, focus and extreme caution.

That said, if you are someone who is new to these kinds of terrain, do not let these challenges deter you. We will be providing you with the training needed to handle both- the equipment and terrain- during the trek. Getting used to the terrain and altitude takes time, but that’s part of the joy of being in high mountains.

Challenge 3: Peculiar Terrain:

Pangarchulla peak is kind enough to introduce you to the strangest traits of a mountain- like steep ascends, massive open lands, heavily bouldered trails, exposed ridges, extreme snow, and a sudden and steep height gain on summit day – all in the span of less than a week! A trek up the peak is an on-field lesson in the variety of high-altitude features. Navigating the massive snow rocks, braving the unpredictable weather in knee-deep snow and walking brutal slopes on the trail keep the journey exhilarating throughout.

Each season on the peak is met with different kinds of challenges and hence, different visuals and a completely different experience. Even within the same season, the trail of the trek takes you through an assortment of landscapes, each with its own difficulties. It is like the mountain is teasing you out of your comfort zone – each time you get used to the terrain, it changes face and presents you with something new!

Challenge 4: Push Towards the Summit: A Sudden High

There are treks which up their level of difficulty gradually through the days, and then there's Pangarchulla. A breezy walk for the first two days to an insanely long and arduous climb up the summit on the third day - the trek goes from a difficulty level of 1 to 5 in a matter of 2 days. A 4481m peak with a 1100M altitude gain on the last day - Pangarchulla is known for its insanely long summit push which many have termed 'endless'.

Be prepared for a long day – at least 12 to 15 hours of walking up and down steep slopes in either a snowy terrain or miles long stretches of boulders as big as an idler’s debts. Along with that, the exposed ridges introduce you to high speed winds that are enough to take the chill right down to the bone. The views from the summit, however, makes every bit worth the effort- with a view of the entire Garhwal Range and layers and layers of mountains till your eyes can see.

Challenge 5: A Split Personality

Like many trekking trails that are accessible in multiple seasons, Pangarchulla has a split personality, too! You will witness a different face, a different intensity and a different mood of the peak in summers (March and April) and in winters (October through December). Embodying different challenges, the peak will present to you different views, a different vibe and a different approach to climb it in each season.

March and April: At this time, the challenge is walking on the snow which is as unpredictable as a drunkard’s walk! Apart from being inconsistent, it also requires the use of some mountaineering equipment such as microspikes and ice axes. That said, this is relatively easier than the winter season and has higher summit rates. But it is also true that the weather gets a tad bit moodier and much more unpredictable during this time. Unannounced showers of snow are commonplace in this season – affecting the climb and needing a shift in plans as well as the approach to climbing it.

October through December: During October and November, you are likely to be welcomed by a landscape in which the snow has retrieved for the season. Having melted away, the terrain is now miles of rocks and massive boulders with huge gaps in between them. Trust plays a major role in crossing this section. The boulders on this trail are fairly stable. Once you learn to trust the boulders and your feet a little, you will see how easy it is to walk over them without expending much energy. Jumping from one big rock surface to another, it almost feels like being part of a video game.

Handy tip: Try to find a straight path across from over the boulders instead of climbing up and down each rock which will only tire you out pretty soon.

The summit day runs longer during this season. When the slopes of the mountain are snowy (march and april), you could slide down them in one go and that would take not more than 5 minutes. This stretch of steep descend, in the absence of snow, has to be crossed with extreme caution, one step at a time. The rocky patch is likely to take upwards of three hours to navigate.

The verglas on the boulders does not make things any easier. The otherwise uneven terrain of the meadows, too, would be a straight walk on a massive ice field during March and April. But during winters, it takes much longer to cross.

By the mid of November and all of December, the area starts to get a fresh layer of snowfall. This, although not dangerous with skilled professionals around, may present you with difficulties of a different kind.

All in all, a climb up Pangarchulla is always shrouded in mystery – and is quite the experience each time you climb it. The unpredictability keeps you attentive and focused on the task, making the climb a soulful experience.

Challenge 6: Keeping your head in the game

It is relatively easier to keep your head in the game when you are involuntarily rid of distractions such as phone calls and messages. To climb a mountain requires a lot of focus; so much so that it is almost meditative. And it helps when the location is so remote that it keeps you away from such distractions automatically. The trail of Pangarchulla is not one of those! Almost the entire trail gets strong reception and it takes great resolve to keep your phones turned off so as to get all that you can from the mountain. While it also means that help is available whenever you might need it because of the connectivity, it also sometimes takes away from the climb a little.

Gear required for Pangarchulla

While we will be providing most of the technical equipment needed for the trek (tents, sleeping bags, microspikes, ice axe), there is some basic gear you will need from your end to get through your hike comfortably.

Some of the things you will need are:

1)   A sturdy, lightweight backpack: A good backpack which sits comfortably on your back without putting too much pressure on it can be the deciding factor between making it to the summit or not. Good, however, is not a synonym for expensive.

One of our founders, Pankaj, purchased a non-branded pack for INR 1100 in 2010 and the pack continues to work just fine for him even today. In the article linked below, he shares some helpful tips on what to look for when choosing a trekking backpack.

How to choose your backpack

2) Comfortable trekking shoes: Happy feet equal a happy trek. Conventional sports shoes don’t suit trekking trails. We recommend wearing high ankle shoes with sturdy soles. These not only provide better support but also reduce the possibility of injuries while hiking. In case, you need help with a list of deciding factors that make for good trekking shoes, please refer to the article below.

How to choose a good pair of hiking shoes

3) Right Clothing: Any high-altitude trek requires specific kinds of clothing. It should be warm but light weight. It should also be such that it is easily packaged. On high-altitude treks like Pangarchulla Peak, we usually employ the layering method where you put on multiple layers of clothing instead of one very heavy, thick jacket. This is for two reasons:

1. The weather in Himalayan regions is unpredictable and changes very quickly. Layering gives you the freedom to adapt to that accordingly where you are not left feeling too hot or too cold.

2. These are easy to carry and are packing-friendly.

4) Right Sunglasses: When you know you are going to be in and around snow or in any high-altitude location where the sun is harsh, you might want to carry a good pair of sunglasses. A lack of these could prove to be fatal. The article below can help you pick out just the right pair.

How to pick high-altitude UV protection glasses?

Skills required for Pangarchulla Peak

Bikat Adventures is primarily an adventure learning organization. This means our key objective is not just to help trekkers complete their treks but also to ensure they pick up some valuable lessons and skills in trekking along the way.

To achieve this, we have created learning modules and paired them to different levels on the Bikat Rating Scale.

These modules are taught real-time on the trails by our trek leaders.

The following are some skills that are likely to come in handy on a trek like Pangarchulla Peak.

While you will have all the assistance you need on the trek from our capable trek leaders and guides, we suggest browsing through the articles below to get an idea of what is involved.

1) Ascending & Descending on Trails

The summit for Pangarchulla Peak is full of steep ascents and equally steep descents. While ascending and descending on a rocky terrain is difficult, achieving this on icy slopes is tricky and a heavily bouldered landscape, even trickier. A set of simple techniques can help you navigate all kinds of terrain with considerable ease while also reducing chances of injuries and stress to specific body parts. The guide linked below shares some useful tips on how to ascend and descend on trails.

Ascending and Descending on Trails

2) Packing Your Rucksack

Given how unpredictable the weather gets on Pangarchulla Peak , you are likely to keep changing your layering frequently along the way. Also, due to the vast difference in day temperature and that at night, you most probably will spend a lot of time packing and re-packing your sack.

Accessing your stuff can get a bit messy and confusing during this process.

A sack packed right can facilitate your trekking while incorrect packing can make even an easy trail seem difficult. Worry not, we are here to help. The article linked below shares some useful guidelines you can follow to pack efficiently.

3) How to Pitch a Tent

Our trek leaders will be guiding you on how to pitch a tent during the trek. Nevertheless, we are linking the article below for anyone who might be interested in reading about it.

4) Layering Basics

Layering appropriately to protect you from the cold is essential. The article linked below will give you a fair idea of the winter layers you will need and guide you on how to layer up at campsites and while hiking.

5) Understanding Equipment

Like we said before, Pangarchulla Peak takes you through an assortment of landscapes. This, along with its peculiar terrain and environment require you to use some mountaineering equipment. The articles below will acquaint you to a few of these and help you understand how to use them as well as how they can facilitate your climb.

a)   How to use a trekking pole?

b)   How to use gaiters?

c) How to use Microspikes?

We hope this article answers all the questions you may have about Pangarchulla Peak. In case you need further assistance/information with something, please feel free to reach out to us. We are only a phone call away.

Know Before You Go to Pangarchulla Peak Trek

Pangarchulla Peak Trek

One of the greatest Himalayan summit treks one may take in April is to Pangarchulla Peak. Technically speaking, the 14,700-foot summit is not a behemoth. A careless attitude, though, can lose you the well-deserved summit glory. Take into consideration the tips and suggestions to increase your possibility of attending the Summit.

Trekkers must always have a photocopy of their picture ID with them while entering the forest checkpoints.

Your lodging will be organized in lodges at the base camp.

You will spend three nights in a tent while on the hike.

At the base camp, we provide a cloakroom for extra luggage. Keep your valuables out of the cloakroom.

Please be aware that twin-sharing tents might not be offered. This is due to the fact that various nations supply the basic materials used to make tents.

However, because of the upheaval across the world, their export has suffered. Tents are now in limited supply everywhere as a result.

Despite this, you will still have plenty of room as these tents are made to fit three hikers.

Check the snow conditions with your guide and time your trk=ek according to the fall of snow.

Carry all the trek gears you will need to carry as there might be a time when the ponies won’t be available.

Make an early start to the day and plan your summit according to the proper time as it takes 7 hours to reach.

Pangarchulla Peak Trek

Only April offers access to the Pangarchulla Peak trip which is the spring season. The other seasons are not favorable for the trek hence it remains closed. As the route contains too much snow before April, the summit ascent is not feasible.

Following April, the snow fades away, making the summit climb hazardous due to exposed stones. These stones are large and have several gaps among them, making it difficult for any hiker to pass between them. It is quite hazardous as well as quickly exhausted. Due to these factors, it is recommended to make the ascent before the snow melts. The mountaintop climb is best accomplished during this brief window, even though the remainder of the path is accessible for approximately 8 months out of the year.

On the Pangarchulla trek in April, it is officially Spring. At this moment, lovely meadows are emerging as the snow begins to melt. Although there is little snow in the campgrounds, there is a lot of newly fallen, heavy snow over 12,000 feet. This is the ideal quantity of snow needed to make it easier to reach the top. Concluding that spring provides a best of both worlds where the ideal timeframe for mountain ascents and the season to view new blossoms. The journey is only accessible and secure during this period.

  • Winter Treks in Himalayas

Adorning the Lord Curzon circuit- one of Garhwal Himalaya’s most fabled trails, Pangarchulla- the chimney peak soars to vision. Perched at 14, 700 ft., for mountaineering enthusiasts, the peak offers a perfect test of non-technical climbing skills. Though this Uttarakhand trek is accessible all though the year, it is the winter snow that makes it truly unsurpassable. If thrill is directly proportionate to the gauge of challenge,  Pangarchulla Peak Trek  in the winters would be a journey brave hearts just cannot afford to miss!

Spanning over 7 days, the trek will take you along the pilgrim vein of Uttarakhand, from Haridwar to Joshimath, where we have our base camp. A little further away, from Dhak village, starts our walking trajectory up the rocky tracks. With ascent, the horizons open up to cliff side villages characterized by terraced farmland and slant roofed houses, moving on to green meadows surrounded by the signature peaks of Garhwal Himalayas. Notable are—Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Hati-Ghori, and Barmal among others. Part of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, the trail to Pangarchulla never loses sight of these celebrated peaks and culminates finally at the summit with a gala of glittering snow views.

Key Highlights:

• A Variety of Flora and Fauna- Until the snowline starts; the track will be strewn with blood-red rhododendrons. Plenty of Oaks, silver birch, blue pine, and bhojpatra- the bark of which is known to source papyrus, will be lining the way. Commonly found wildlife here consists of—musk deer, black bear, and Himalayan tahr.

• A Ridge Climb on Summit Day- A steep ridge taking you on an ascent to the peak on summit day is a painstaking but highly gratifying feature of this trek. The climb becomes arduous and sated with adrenalin rush. The overwhelming snow on the trail will add to this incomparable feeling of exploring the unsurpassable. • Unbound Snow on Risk-Free Slopes- The one dominant characteristic of your winter adventure to the Pangarchulla Peak will be the treat of snow. In most parts on the last lap of the climb, the slopes covered in powdery snow will offer you an ascent without the risk of a deathly fall, by providing a cushioning. These gently curving inclines have the typical quality of skiing slopes. It is ideal for you to enjoy the delights of a snow saturated wintry Himalaya sans the risk of tumbling over fatally. It is also ideal for your enjoyment if you happen to have experience in skiing

Pangarchulla Peak in early spring

Spring is one of the best times to trek in the Himalayas. In early March, you could find the entire mountain to yourself. Late in March and April is great as well and the snow conditions yield to venturing higher into the mountains.

We had a week of school holidays in late March. It so happened that we had two office holidays during Holi and good Friday in that week. Taking a few days off would give us the entire week off ! So, we decided to grab that opportunity to head for a trek. We wanted to find a trek that is challenging enough to keep our little son engaged that could be done during spring. After a bit of research, we decided on Pangarchulla Peak .

Pangarchulla peak at 4570m, a little over 15,100 feet is in the Nanda Devi National Park and is a great summit climb which is reasonably difficult and exciting, but not a technical one requiring mountaineering skills. To top that, the trek offers great views of an entire Amphitheater of mountains right from the 7000ers like the great Nanda Devi (7816m), Chaukhamba, Kamet (7756m), Trishul, Dronagiri and a while bunch of beautiful 6000ers like Hathi Parbat (6727m), Nilgiri Parbat (6474m), Mandir Parbat (6559m), Gorur Parvat (6504m) and so on.

Spring is the best time to climb peaks like these with similar elevation and geography as they are covered with snow and you don’t have to worry climbing over moraines and boulders that drain your energy, stress your knees and make them technical. Coming down is also easier as you could slide down the slopes of the mountain which is way more relaxed and fun than climbing down over boulders and slippery scree.

Five of us decided on this trek and the best choice was Himalayan Shelter who are the best for private treks and can customise to the last bit to make it fun for all and giving the best opportunity for a summit attempt. We had a great team of qualified guides Nitin, the highly experienced Veeru and the cheerful helper, Pintu.

We started from Dehradun in the morning, visited Devprayag, which is the Sangam (merging) of the two great rivers, the mild Alaknanda originating from Satopanth area and turbulent Bhagirathi, originating off Gaumukh, Gangotri glacier. They become the great river Ganga after merging. This place is also home to Raghunathji Temple (Ram and Sita), which is one of the 108 Divya Desam (Vishnu Temples) sung by Alwars.

Pangarchulla peak

We reached Joshimath late in the evening and checked into an excellent guest house where a delicious dinner was prepared in a jiffy by the excellent cook Pappu, who accompanied us during the trek.

After a relaxed night’s sleep, we woke up early to get a darshan of the Narsingh temple in Joshimath, which is also the winter seat of Badrivishal Ji. We returned back and had a sumptuous hot breakfast and tea outdoors warming ourselves up in the morning sun.

It was time to pack the bags and get ready for the trek. It was Holi day and we had a few colourful encounters enroute our starting point through the villages of Dhak, Tapovan, Karchi to Tugasi. Our local guide, Roopesh, who was an expert in the area and typically summits Pangarchulla multiple times a year joined us here. Depending on the season and what gets opened, your campsites will vary. We intended to camp at Gulling as the first campsite, but it hadn’t opened up yet. So we headed towards Akhrot Ghetta.

Right at the start, we saw flour mill driven by water power grinding wheat into flour. See pictures below.

pangarchulla trek wikipedia

The starting elevation is around 2490m. Throughout the day, Mount Dronagari (7066m) keeps you company and you will its full face in different hues.

This is a very short trek though a forest crossing a small stream.

The scenery opens up and you’ll see man speaks like Hanuman, Rishi Kot, Raunthi, Hathi Parbat, Barmal, etc. It was a very short trek. We started around 11.30 am and reached before 2 pm for a delicious hot lunch.

The many hues of Mount Dronagiri from Akrot Ghetta keep you company for the remainder of the day.

After a peaceful night’s rest, we started to Khullara the next day, which was also a very short trek. Couple of hours into the trek, you start encountering snow and eventually the rest of the trek is plodding through the snow. The entire trek took took a bit less than 4 hours. We camped at Khullara, 3330m.

Here’s a good doggie that decided to accompany us in the trek and a beautiful Rhododendron bloom.

More peaks can be seen enroute. The granite of dome of Kamet and Mandir Parvat below.

Kauri Pass is done as a day trek from here and is very popular in all seasons. The big box companies have fixed campsites at Khullara and many do the Kauri Pass trek. There was a set of folks who were planning to attempt Pancharchulla the next day leaving around 1 am. We also met a few other folks who were just returning back trying to attempt the peak, but had to stop short before the summit due to deep snow. Being early in the season, everyone camped at lower Khullara as the horses carrying that gear go only that far due to snow. There is another campsite higher up that you could camp when the snow melts.

A view of Khullara and our team setting up the campsite.

Some one slide stepping up the slope diligently and skiing down.  Higher up above the tree line, there are great open slopes offering some great off-piste skiing.

After a hot tea and hearty breakfast, we put on our gaiters and microspikes. Everyone looked super cool in yellow gaiters ! It is entirely snow from now on. This was a acclimatisation trek for us before the Peak attempt next day. We started in a relaxed way around 9.30 am. The plan was to do the Kuari Pass and return back for an early start the next day.

Right from the get to, the trail starts to climb. This is where the skier was skiing down yesterday.

Pictures from the folks starting their trek today.

himalayashelter.com

Around a hour and half into the climb, we are pretty much above the tree line with wide open slopes perfect for skiing. You can see the ski tracks in the pictures below. You can see the folks on the trail leading to the ridge. That’s the next goal to reach. There is a little top to our right where some folks had climbed. That way also leads to Thali campsite that was not yet open due to snow.

himalayashelter.com

Once you hit the ridge, you make a left and at a far away distance, you are able to spot the Kauri Pass Top. See picture below. You can see a line of folks climbing. That was our goal for the day. It was not now around 12.30 pm, three hours into the trek.

The below pictures show the entire trail through the snow with many folks enroute.

We started walking a bit fast now. There were quite a few folks on the trail as the pass trek is easy and quite popular. With traffic on both directions, you had to step aside for folks to pass through.

That’s the last climb to the top. It is pretty straight forward. We got there around 1.30 pm.

That’s about it for today. We had a great dinner as usual and hit our sacks for a early start tomorrow.

Off to a early start with headlamps on a beautiful almost full moon day ! The snow was pretty good – not icy and not too soft. The microspikes gave us a good grip in this type of snow.

This is how it looks at 3am with moon at its peak!

Srirang was pretty fast and reached Khullara by 11.45am. I reached an hour late around 12.45 pm. I had a headache and had twisted my ankle a bit. Therefore walked a bit slowly.

Hot lunch and tea was waiting at the campsite. It was a great day and a well deserved afternoon break.

A simple uneventful day. We trekked down the same path we had come and started driving back and I thought we were heading to the hotel. A great surprise was waiting for us ! We drove to a hot spring. There, out of the blue, out great team got a cooker out that contained biryani that they had prepared at the campsite. They heated that the hot spring.

pangarchulla trek wikipedia

Meanwhile the the driver had disappeared with the vehicle and I was wondering where he had gone. He got some cold dahi (curd) after 5 days of missing for the biryani and we had a delicious “hot lunch” at a beautiful place overlooking a gorge with a river running all the way down !

Our super team from Himalaya Shelter for this trek!!

pangarchulla trek wikipedia

After that we stopped to get a last hearty view of the great Nanda Devi ! You can’t return without relishing the mighty one !!

pangarchulla trek wikipedia

We halted for that night at Pipalkoti, past Joshimath. We had a nice refreshing bath after the trek. Himalaya Shelter choses hotels that have kitchen that their cook can dish out delicious meals for our team. We had our evening tea, snacks, delicious dinner.  After a peaceful night’s sleep, we had a delicious breakfast with fruits and curd, then headed back to Dehradun where caught the night train to Delhi, then caught an early morning flight back to Bangalore.

Another amazing trek experience with the great Himalaya Shelter team! We can’t wait for the next trek to Rupin Pass in June !!

Category Guides To Choose Treks

By Sneha Rao

A t 15,069 ft , Pangarchulla peak offers a challenging summit climb.

Not all trekkers who attempt the summit actually reach the top – only around 30% of the trekkers in a batch manage to get there.

And not all batches that set out on the trek even begin the summit climb.

pangarchulla trek wikipedia

Pangarchulla peak in the distance, with trekkers who have almost made it to the top

Given that it takes 12 hours on average to get to the summit and return, the weather has to be perfect for a summit attempt.

After all, you do not want to be caught in a thunderstorm or a blizzard on an exposed ridge.

Once the snow starts to melt during the day, the rocks become slippery.

It also becomes harder to ascend when the sun is strong.

Make sure your headlamps are working and you carry plenty of water!

Take small steps so that you don’t tire out and  turn around when you take a break .

The silhouettes of the big mountains surrounding the trail become clearer as the day draws near.

You cross six ridges on the way to the summit .

The terrain alternates between snow and alpine grass as you move from wind blown areas where accumulated snow melts away quickly to shaded valleys filled with snow.

While trekking in snow takes more time, it is much safer than climbing the boulders that get exposed once the snow melts.

After the first couple of ridges, you can see the trail all the way to the summit.

The boulders on the trail are huge.

If the snow covering is too thin, they become slippery.

If there is no snow at all, you are forced to climb up and down thousands of these all the way to the summit.

When you turn around, more mountains of the Garhwal Himalayas come into view.

In the picture below, the first snow capped mountain you see to the left is Mt Chaukhamba ( 7,138 m), the conical mountain a little to the right of this is Mt Neelkanth  (6,596 m).

As you move your eyes further to the right, you spot the Hathi  –  Gauri mountains (6,727 m).

While it is tempting to walk up straight to the summit up, it is better to  thread your way around the boulders in a zig zag way .

This is easier than trying to cut a straight line to the summit.

Your body also acclimatises better as you gain altitude slowly.

The final climb, once you cross all the ridges, is around 350 metres.

Depending on how much snow or ice there is, you might have to use a rope to get to the top.

This is because of the strong winds here.

Make sure you reach the summit by 11.00 am.

In case of medical emergencies, Trekveda and its trek leaders bear the sole responsibility to get you back to your wellbeing with their training and techniques. Suspecting any physiological disturbance in your body, immediately report to your trek leader as they are trained to counter such problems.

Problems like Acute Mountain Sickness can be prove fatal if not taken into consideration seriously on time. If you encounter/experience any of the symptoms such as persistent headache, fatigue or weakness, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, difficulty in sleeping, you shouldn’t let it go or treat it by your own either.

Acute mountain sickness is one of the most common yet the fatal problem trekkers face due to number of reasons, if the problem continues to persist, then you’re advised to descend down to the basecamp and then to visit the doctor immediately.

People with AMS are treated with number of medicines such Diamox, Nifidipine etc. coupled up with methods like Triple One Test- where one disprin is given with a liter of water along with the rest for an hour.

While AMS is most common at the high altitudes yet it can’t be risked taken casually as it leads to severe fatal conditions like HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) or HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) which, if not treated on time can lead to number of serious chronic disorders. These conditions need to not to comply with AMS, they can occur without AMS preceding.

It’s suggested to take every single disturbance into the consideration while you’re on the trek.

However, Trekveda is capable of tackling all the medical emergencies with its trained professionals yet there are several things that you need to consider, specially the intake of medicines and the knowledge about their advantages and side-effects. Keeping yourself hydrated and nutritionally fulfilled curbs the chances of AMS.

Risk and Response

A high altitude trek requires an audacious state of mind, however leaving on a bold excursion without computing the dangers is absolute idiocy. That is the reason we have recorded a couple of Risk and the Response arranged by Trekveda to limit or address the dangers in the most ideal way.

Risk: Altitude

Before you begin the trek, it is critical to comprehend the ramifications of high altitude on your body. Know about side effects of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) like mellow cerebral pain, queasiness and general distress.

Response: If you feel any of these indications, illuminate the trek pioneer on need and take after his directions. Each campground has as stretcher, completely prepared medical aid pack, oxygen chambers to address the circumstance.

Risk: Weather

Weather is unusual in the Himalayas. Despite the fact that we are constantly attentive about the evolving climate, nobody can ensure a snowfall, rain or Sun. Do comprehend that your security is of most extreme significance to us and we won't continue any further from the campground if the climate isn't ideal.

Response: The choice of the Trek Leaders and Guides to continue or sit tight for the climate to show signs of improvement will be last.

Risk: Injuries

Often, while trekking over troublesome territories, you may have minor wounds like leg sprain, wounds and so forth. Genuine wounds like breaks or real cuts are exceptionally uncommon.

Response: All our Trek Leaders are Certified Wilderness First Aid responders. They are prepared to deal with crises and can handle minor wounds with an all-around prepared medical aid unit. If there should arise an occurrence of genuine wounds, the patient is carried on a stretcher to the closest street head and is directed to closest therapeutic focus.

Risk: Lack of Communication

In the remote zones of the Himalayas, portable systems don't reach. On a trek, one is cut off from the universe of calls, SMS or WhatsApp Messages.

Response: We’d depend on walkie-talkies and sprinters to communicate between the campgrounds and the base camps.

Pre-Trek Preparations

Trekking, for its ever-lasting memories and experience, demands just a few things which involve physical endurance with physiological wellness. Not just the one who’s physically fit would do the magic in trekking but one also needs to be mentally fit as well in order to cope up with the adversities one might have to face during the treks such natural calamities, rains or other unforeseen conditions. To keep up with such requirements of trekking here are a few things you can do to get yourself physically fit.

Prerequisites of the Trek

Cardiovascular Endurance and Stamina

Cardiovascular endurance is the primordial thing that this trek asks for along with the stamina to withstand the stringent conditions during the trek. There are number of ways you can increase your endurance level but Jogging regularly with gradual increase in the pace would do the magic in just 2 or 2 and a half months. You can also increase your endurance and stamina through swimming, cycling and much more.

Combining the speed and distance target is the most effective way to get your body and mind prepared for the Trek. If you’re planning to build your stamina in a phased manner then here you should pay heed to:

  • Target completing the distance of 5 km in 35 minutes or less at the beginning
  • Pace up your legs to complete the 5 km in 30 minutes or less
  • Before you begin the trek, you should be able to complete 10 km in 60 minutes or less

To build the strength is another most important thing and a major requirement for this trek. The whole journey of the trek is like an eternal staircase, the more you climb the better you can have the view. It goes with a climb followed by a flat then again, a climb followed by a flat. All the scenic beauty of the trek demands no less than the power of your legs.

The strength of your legs is something you need to work upon. Here is what you can do to strengthen your leg muscles to bear the pain of the trek.

Doing the squats can help. Goal for 3 sets of 15 repetitions without fail. You can begin with 8 squats in each set at the beginning, subject to your core strength for the exercise.

Flexibility

The more flexible you are the more you have the chances to get the glimpse with lesser hustle. Stretching is another major aspect of the trekking which provides you the much-needed flexibility to climb the altitudes with ease while carrying the backpack altogether is not an easier errand.

Stretching your body at large can bring you the utmost comfort during the trek. Here are some stretching you can do to get the flexibility-Stretch your hamstring, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders. They’ll give strength and help you arrive on the slopes with the relaxed muscles. All these exercises would help you to get through the trek with ease and comfort provided you give an ample time to these.

Cardiovascular Exercise

Cardiovascular exercise is one of the most sought-after method which provide not just the physical endurance but also the strength to withstand any unavoidable circumstances sternly. Trekking demands the high endurance which you can develop in a month or two where you need to begin with the jogging or running (only if you could do). This practice needs to be combined with the speed and distance targets. You need to keep on increasing both with the time.

Begin with the small chunks of the targets and gradually increase for the bigger one. For instance,

Begin with a target of completing a distance of 5km. in 45 minutes and then gradually increase it to 7 km. in the same time and remain stick to this practice until you are able to cover 10 km. in 80-90 minutes without fail, at a stretch.

Strength Building Exercise

Another vital area of improvement, you need to work upon. Before you head to the trek, you need to have the physical strength in order to carry backpacks on the uneven terrains. Considering everything under the sun, you ought to prepare yourself for the core strength. A strength would be make you suffer less than others who’d not pay the heed.

Flexibility in the body is what the trekking demands the most. Carrying the backpacks without flexibility in your hamstrings, quadriceps, shoulder, lateral sides etc. can prove out to be fatal. More the muscles relaxed, easier would be your trekking experience. Carrying a backpack, however light in weight, can bring you the unnecessary pain which may spoil your entire trek.

Concentration

To pacify yourself or any other companion, yoga and meditation are the key. These practices not only give you the mental peace but also provide you with a placid inner conscience which is extremely important in order to withstand the cons during the trek.

This also improves your decision-making ability in the direst stressful situations, during the trek.
