Bauhaus’ Peter Murphy to Lead David Bowie Tribute Tour Alongside Guitarist Adrian Belew

The Bauhaus reunion tour of 2022 may have imploded after a mere 13 shows, but frontman Peter Murphy will be back on the road in October to front the Celebrating David Bowie tour alongside guitarist Adrian Belew, Spacehog’s Royston Langdon, a Perfect Circle bassist Matt McJunkins, guitarist Scrote, Devo/A Perfect Circle drummer Jeff Friedl, saxophonist Ron Dziubla and guitarist Eric Schermerhorn. It kicks off on October 10 in Tacoma, Washington and wraps up on November 22 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

“Such a surprise to be invited to celebrate Bowie in this outing, and alongside a great lineup,” Murphy said in a statement. “So enticing to play the part.”

Belew played guitar on Bowie’s 1979 LP Lodger along with the 1978 Isolar II Tour and 1990 Sound + Vision tour. Eric Schermerhorn, meanwhile, was a guitarist and background vocalist on Bowie’s 1991 tour with Tin Machine. The other artists don’t have a direct connection to Bowie, but Murphy and Bauhaus covered “Ziggy Stardust” on a 1982 single, turning it into a hit for another generation

With Adrian Belew, the tuneful tenor gleefully singing Bowie favorites while delivering the otherworldly guitar playing he is revered for.”

The 'Celebrating David Bowie' tour kicks off in April

Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy has been announced to lead the next David Bowie tribute tour with guitarist Adrian Belew – see dates and ticket information below.

Murphy will front the 2023 ‘Celebrating David Bowie’ tour in North America alongside celebrated guitarist Adrian Belew, who’s best known as formerly playing in King Crimson .

Spacehog’ s Royston Langdon, A Perfect Circle bassist Matt McJunkins, guitarist Scrote, Devo /A Perfect Circle drummer Jeff Friedl, saxophonist Ron Dziubla, and guitarist Eric Schermerhorn will also play in the touring group.

The tribute tour kicks off on April 4 in Houston, Texas, US and wraps up on May 8 in Tacoma, Washington, US. Tickets will be available to buy here .

Murphy said in a statement: “Such a surprise to be invited to celebrate Bowie in this outing, and alongside a great lineup. So enticing to play the part.”

‘Celebrating David Bowie’, which is spearheaded by Scrote, has been an ongoing project since 2017 and was fronted last year by Todd Rundgren .

A press release states [via Rolling Stone ] that the 2023 edition will “interpret Bowie’s greatest hits with a special emphasis on Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust proto punk era, his Berlin trilogy records (‘Low’, ‘Heroes’, and ‘Lodger’) and his later Trent Reznor infused years”.

Belew played guitar on Bowie’s 1979 album ‘Lodger’ and was a session musician on the late singer’s 1978 ‘Isolar II’ tour and 1990 ‘Sound + Vision’ tour.

Meanwhile, Eric Schermerhorn was a guitarist and background vocalist on Bowie’s 1991 tour with Tin Machine.

Last summer Bauhaus cancelled their North American tour, announcing that Murphy was to attend rehab . The band were set to continue their reunion tour in the US and Canada in September 2022, with dates kicking off in Toronto.

In March of last year Bauhaus returned with the single ‘Drink New Wine’ , their first new music in 14 years.

Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy will front a David Bowie tribute tour kicking off in April 2023.

“Celebrating David Bowie” is an annual tour conceptualized by Angelo “Scorte” Bundini. This year’s outing will “interpret Bowie’s greatest hits with a special emphasis on Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust proto punk era, his Berlin trilogy records ( Low ,  Heroes , and  Lodger ), and his later Trent Reznor infused years.”

Alongside Murphy and Bundini, the 2023 touring lineup features Adrian Belew (King Crimson), Royston Langdon (Spacehog), Matt McJunkins (A Perfect Circle), Jeff Friedl (Devo, A Perfect Circle), Ron Dziubla, and Eric Schermerhorn.

“This new show represents two sides of Bowie,” explained Scorte (via Rolling Stone ). “With Peter Murphy, we have the dark baritone shrouded in mystery and wonder. With Adrian Belew, the tuneful tenor gleefully singing Bowie favorites while delivering the otherworldly guitar playing he is revered for.”

Peter Murphy drops off delayed “Celebrating David Bowie” tour due to ill health

The latest installment of the “Celebrating David Bowie” tour already has been rescheduled once after Peter Murphy underwent “an unexpected medical procedure,” and now the Bauhaus frontman is dropping out of the project altogether.

Tour organizers announced Friday that “Peter Murphy will be unable to join the fall tour dates due to ill health and doctor’s orders to rest and recover.” Murphy’s medical condition has not been disclosed.

The tour, featuring guitarist Adrian Belew and members of Spacehog and A Perfect Circle , will proceed as planned, organizers said, “with special guests joining along the way.”

In a statement, Murphy said, “I sorely regret not (being) able to play concerts at this time. I am sure the CDB shows will be great.”

The Celebrating David Bowie tour originally had been planned for April and May of this year. But in March, organizers announced it would be rescheduled for the fall after Murphy underwent “an unexpected medical procedure that prohibits his ability to travel as planned.”

The show will find the assembled musicians spotlighting David Bowie’s greatest hits with a heavy focus on Ziggy Stardust , the Berlin trilogy — Low, “Heroes” and Lodger — and “his later Trent Reznor-infused years.”

Belew — who has played with both Bowie and Nine Inch Nails — will be joined by guitarist Scrote, Spacehog frontman Royston Langdon, A Perfect Circle members Matt McJunkins (bass) and Jeff Friedl (drums), saxophonist Ron Dziubla and guitarist Eric Schermerhorn, who played with Bowie’s Tin Machine.

To the surprise of absolutely no one.

I can’t say I was surprised. Canceled back in May and now November and beyond. I hope he’s ok. It really sucked to break the news to my kid that he’s still not well and they canceled again. It was for her 16th birthday. Sh*t happens. Hope he gets better

The thought of seeing such a top=tier “spawn of Bowie” as Murphy sharing the stage with Belew seriously had me considering going. I hesitated, however, due to Murphy’s notoriety or unpredictable reliability. Glad I did.

No one wants mic stands bludgeoning their jaw off out of place during Space Oddity (see David J’s book for more on Murphy’s unhinged violence against fans during shows) or for the Gothfather to walk off mid-second verse of Life on Mars.

Love his work with Bauhaus to death and some of his solo output, too. but as a person, I feel sorry for him. He’s a mess.
