The newly renovated Visitor Center will reopen February 3, 2024.

The Saginaw Bay Visitor Center, located in Bay City State Park on the shores of Saginaw Bay, helps visitors discover Tobico Marsh, one of the largest coastal wetlands on the Great Lakes. 

Nestled under a canopy of sheltering hardwoods on the edge of the marsh, the modern visitor center stands on the site of the historic Jennison Nature Center, built in 1940 and named for George B. Jennison, a prominent local conservationist. In 2023, the aging nature center was given a $2 million makeover. The 10,000-square-foot building, with a 100-seat auditorium, now boasts a fully renovated exhibit area and an experiential classroom.

The Wetlands Wonders Gift Shoppe is located within the center and run by volunteers from the Friends of Bay City State Park. The shop has a wide variety of educational resources for all ages, as well as a large selection of nature-related gifts.

Today ― April 8, 2024 ― is the day of the Great American Eclipse that's expected to cross a large span of the mainland United States .

Most of Michigan  doesn't fall in the path of totality , but assuming skies are clear at any point within the 2.5-hour span or so , you can still see the moon crossing the sun with eclipse glasses or a safe eclipse viewer .

There's one small sliver of Monroe County, near Toledo, that's  expected to be in the path of totality . This means the area will likely dim and temperatures drop a few degrees as the moon's shadow covers the sun.

The April 8, 2024, solar eclipse will start in northern Mexico before making its way into the United States, starting when the shadow of the moon passes into Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT.

The eclipse will carve a path straight through Texas before heading northeast through the rest of the country , including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. That also includes a small section of southeastern Monroe County in Michigan .

When is the 2024 eclipse in Michigan?

The April 8, 2024 eclipse begins at approximately 1:55 p.m. in Michigan , depending on your location. In Detroit, it begins at 1:58 p.m. Totality takes place between 3:10-3:15 p.m. The partial eclipse will end at approximately 4:24-4:27 p.m., again depending on your exact location.

In Grand Rapids, where there will be 94% coverage of the sun, the 2024 solar eclipse will begin at 1:55 p.m.  and reach maximum totality, or coverage, around 3:11 p.m. It will conclude with a final partial eclipse at 4:24 p.m.

When is the next solar eclipse after 2024? Here's what the future looks like.

T he path of totality for the April 8 total solar eclipse crosses through only a small part of Michigan . The path includes Michigan's most southeastern corner and hits places like Luna Pier or Erie Township.

If you won't be able to travel to see the eclipse or go outside when the celestial event happens in those areas, Michiganders will get another chance in 75 years, according to NASA.

When is the next solar eclipse in the United States after 2024?

The next total solar eclipse that'll be visible in the United States is Aug. 23, 2044. The path of totality will cross through much of Canada and south into Montana and North Dakota .

After that, another total solar eclipse will cross through the United States on Aug. 12, 2045 , with the path of totality passing through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

When is the next solar eclipse in Michigan after 2024?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible in Michigan is Sept. 14, 2099 , when the path of totality crosses the southwest Lower Peninsula. Prime viewing areas will include Benton Harbor , South Haven , Holland and Grand Rapids , according to Time and Date AS.

Here’s what time the solar eclipse will be visible in Michigan on April 8

Nasa map shows how much solar eclipse coverage to expect.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America and all of Michigan will at least get to see a partial eclipse.

This is the last solar eclipse visible in the Contiguous United States until 2044. The path of totality is the literal path where people will be able to see the Moon completely cover the Sun. It’s about 100 miles wide.

The only place in Michigan located within the path of totality is Luna Pier in Monroe County. It’s right on the edge of the path of totality, so the total solar eclipse will only last 19 seconds there.

Places in the path of totality will see the sky become dark, as if it were dawn or dusk. People who only experience a partial solar eclipse will see the sky appear slightly darker than it was before, depending on their location.

An interactive map put out by NASA lets people put in their zip code to see how much eclipse coverage they can expect there, and what time the eclipse will be at its peak.

Even at 99% coverage, there is still enough sunlight to hurt your eyes during an eclipse. So you’ll want to make sure you have eclipse glasses or another form of eye safety. NASA has more information on eye safety online.

Forecast: Solar Eclipse cloud update: Final tweaking of cloud forecast shows where best to see eclipse

The Great North American eclipse is Monday, April 8 and skywatchers – with proper glasses, of course – are ready to see the moon blocking out the sun during a solar eclipse.

What you will see, how long it will last and when it will take place will depend on where you live. While all states in the contiguous U.S. will experience some level of the eclipse, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as small parts of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee are along the path of totality and will experience the greatest periods of darkness.

In the U.S., the path of totality will start in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CT and will end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. ET (2:25 CT.) In those states, the periods of greatest darkness will reach up to 4 minutes, 27 seconds.

2024 eclipse primer

Scientists say the sun is approaching its maximum activity of its cycle this year, meaning it will be sending off more solar flares and eruptions from its surface — potentially making this year’s total solar eclipse much more dynamic.

Best places to watch the eclipse

The path of totality will start in Mexico and move across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before heading out over the North Atlantic. Small portions of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee will also experience almost the entirety of the eclipse. The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

During the eclipse, the sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of totality will be able to see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun, NASA explains. Outside the path of totality, viewers will see a partial eclipse with the moon covering varying degrees of the sun.

How much will you see where you live?

People viewing the eclipse from the path of totality will be treated to the ghostly-white outer atmosphere of the sun, known as the corona, when the moon completely blocks out the sun’s disk during the total eclipse, NASA explained. Along the path, the sun will be blocked out for about 4-and-a-half minutes.

Eclipse weather

A big question, for a lot of the nation, is how clear the skies will be for prime eclipse viewing. An updated forecast from the National Weather Service looks like a mixed bag.

The solar eclipse forecast for Monday from AccuWeather shows a mix of low to high amounts of cloud cover across the United States. Viewers in New Jersey can expect some increasing clouds, according to the latest forecast. AccuWeather.com

Where to buy last-minute solar eclipse glasses for April 8, 2024

The 2024 solar eclipse is just days away.

Let's make sure you're up to speed on eclipse glasses . Even good sunglasses aren't adequate protection; the sun's rays are too intense for the retina to handle and even looking at a partially obscured sun can cause permanent damage to your eyesight.

So whatever you do on Monday, do not look directly into the eclipse without acquiring proper eyewear. If you need a pair of eclipse glasses, here are some last-minute spots to check out.

You'll also be able to find eclipse glasses on  Amazon  in bulk; just ensure they are approved before you buy them, and ensure you order them early enough so they arrive on time.

Detroit Public Library

Detroit Public Library is hosting viewing parties at each of its open branches, supplying eclipse glasses while supplies last.

Other libraries across Michigan

You may be able to find free eclipse glasses at your local public library in Michigan, along with special eclipse programs.

With help from Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Space Science Institute, The STAR Library Network was able to distribute 5 million solar eclipse glasses to  10,000 public libraries  across the country with assistance from Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Space Science Institute and STAR Net’s Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries program.

Michigan Science Center

Special glasses specifically for viewing a solar eclipse are available at the Mi-Sci gift shop , 5020 John R. St. in Detroit's Midtown, said Mi-Sci staff astronomer Paulette Epstein.

“The Michigan Science Center currently has eclipse glasses on sale for $2 per person,” she said. “So you can come to our store, and you don’t have to pay museum admission to go into the store, and get them. And solar eclipse glasses are also available with a ticket to the Ford House event that we’re hosting, as well.”

It may not be too late to get last minute solar eclipse glasses for today, depending on your location.

Today (April 8), the moon will completely block the sun's disk, plunging parts of 15 U.S. states along the eclipse's path of totality into eerie darkness during the daytime. Meanwhile, viewers across the entire contiguous U.S. will be able to see a partial solar eclipse .

To view the partial phases of the eclipse, no matter where you are, you need to use protective eyewear such as solar eclipse glasses. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you still need a pair of certified solar eclipse glasses before the climax of the total solar eclipse in North America today, you may not be out of luck yet.

Where can I buy solar eclipse glasses in person today?

There are many local businesses that may still have solar glasses in stock today.

The American Astronomical Society (AAS) — the agency responsible for certifying that solar eclipse glasses meet safety regulations — has a list of stores that sell certified eclipse glasses. Try calling a store near you to see if any glasses are in stock. Participating stores include:

To help avoid counterfeit glasses and scams today, make sure your eclipse glasses include an ISO logo on them to show they meet the international safety standard ISO 12312-2 . Check your glasses for any scrapes or rips on the lenses, and try them out using a bright lamp at home before using them to look directly at the sun. You should only be able to see the dimmest speck of light from your lightbulb.

While it's likely too late to order a pair online, many brick-and-mortar businesses may still have eclipse glasses in stock today.
