Visiting Pompeii: What We’ll Cover

Pompeii was a booming port city in the ancient Roman Empire. But all that changed on August 24th, A.D. 79 when the Mt. Vesuvius volcano erupted. Those who were not killed by the missiles of pumice raining down or the lava were wiped out by the toxic gases.

This disastrous day for the Romans has given us an intimate look into what life was like in an ancient Roman city. The volcanic ash and mud from the eruption encased and preserved the city’s artefacts and some of the people’s bodies, clothes, and even places of business.

Pompeii Opening Hours and Tickets

Pompeii is open to visitors every day of the week (with seasonal visiting hours) except on December 25, May 1, and January 1 when it is closed—unless otherwise communicated on the website.

Visiting Hours: 

• From April 1 to October 31: Open daily from 9 am to 7 pm, last entrance at 5:30 pm.
• From November 1 to March 31: Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, last entrance at 3:30 pm.

Certain villas are closed to the public on Tuesdays.

You can buy your tickets for the Pompeii Archaeological Park directly at the entrance. There are three entrances: Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro, and Piazza Esedra.

You’ll most likely be entering through the Porta Marina, which is the entrance next to the train station and main parking area. It’s also the main ticket desk, so you can buy your ticket here and begin your adventure.

How To Get To Pompeii 

Most people who visit Pompeii come by train from Naples. The good thing is that the train station where you need to get off is right in front of the entrance to the archeological park. It’s a quick walk to the entrance and you can’t miss it.

See the details below to get to Pompeii by train from Rome and the Amalfi Coast and directions for those who have rented a car.

The high-speed train from Rome to Naples runs every 20 minutes. You can take the train from Roma Termini station to Napoli Centrale in just over an hour. Book on Trenitalia or through Italo. They are two competing train companies. I prefer Italo.

From Napoli Centrale, you can switch to the local train to Pompeii. The local train, called the Circumvesuviana, is located down the corridor in what is technically Napoli Garibaldi Station.

Take the train towards Sorrento and you’ll arrive at the Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri station after about 20 minutes. The station is a matter of feet from the entrance to the archaeological area.

If you’ve rented a car, it’s quite easy. Get on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) and head onto the A1 highway to Naples. Once you get close to Naples you change to the Motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompeii ovest). Or just add the destination to your GPS.

From the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento is the only town close to Pompeii with a train station. If you’re not in Sorrento, you’ll need to make your way there, jump on the train headed in the direction of Napoli Centrale, and get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri.

For the adventurous souls who rent a car, get to the Motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompeii ovest). Or use your GPS navigation.

Autogrill Pompeii : € | Refreshments —Calling it a cafeteria is a stretch, but it is the only place inside the archeological park to get some refreshments. It’s located behind the Temple of Jupiter.

Bar Sgambati : €€ | Quick Snack —This is the Bar/ Restaurant/ Pizzeria right next to the train station where you get off to visit Pompeii. The food and prices are average, but this is your best bet to get something to eat in the area before or after your trip to the archeological site.

Villa of the Mysteries

The site is fabled for its wall frescos which are believed to illustrate the initiation of a young woman into a Greco-Roman mystery cult. It was discovered in 1910 and is said to have belonged to the Istacidii’s, a wealthy family that resided in Pompeii during the Augustan Era.

The House of the Tragic Poet

Also known as the Homeric House or The Iliadic House, this is 2nd Century villa is deemed to have the best interiors amongst all the houses in Pompeii due to the still-visible frescoes and elegant decor. Archaeologist Antonio Bonucci excavated the house in 1824.

The Temple of Isis

Dedicated to Isis, an Egyptian goddess, this was one of the first sites that surfaced when the Pompeii excavations began. Principal devotees of the temple are believed to be women, slaves, and freedmen. It used as a forum for social, political, and economic gatherings.

Pompeii Spectacula

Pompeii Spectacula, the amphitheater of Pompeii, dates back to around 70 BC. It is not only the oldest surviving Roman amphitheater made of stone but also predates the Colosseum in Rome by over a century!

Stabian Baths

The Stabian Baths stand close to the Forum and are the oldest in the city. It is evidently divided into 2 sections along the same axis: male and female, with a courtyard gym. Much like other Roman baths, there were different rooms with thermal pools of different temperatures and depths.

House of the Vetti

Spanning an entire block, the House of Vettii is one of the largest in Pompeii, preserved in almost pristine condition. This luxurious Domus, through its fresco and pictorial depictions, tells a great deal about the rich merchants of Pompeii. It is said that the brothers Aulo Vettio Restituto and Aulo Vettio Conviva who owned the house, had the walls decorated by one of the best painters in Pompeii in order to flaunt their status symbol.

House of the Faun

Also known as Casa del Fauno, this house was built during the 2nd century BC and is found to be one of the largest and most impressive private residences in Pompeii. This luxurious aristocratic household was home to several famed pieces of art like the legendary Alexander Mosaic, and speaks a great deal about the lives of the rich Romans. It houses 2 atriums, one intended for residence and the other for work.

Forum of Pompeii

The Forum was the hub of cultural and political life in Pompeii. It housed the marketplace, bathhouses, and a unique, cross-shaped courthouse that later influenced European churches. Despite the ruins, Pompeii's grandeur and elegance live on through its intricate architecture and town designs.

There are three primary entrances to enter Pompeii:

Trains depart hourly (occasionally more frequently during peak times) and take 30 minutes from Sorrento or 35–40 minutes from Naples. You can also reach Pompeii by train from Rome. The high-speed Frecciarossa train will get you from Roma Termini station to Napoli Centrale in just over an hour. What to expect, tickets, tours and advice on getting to pompeii.

Where is Pompeii?

The world famous Pompeii is 150 miles south of Rome, fairly close to Naples. It is a long day from Rome or an easy excursion from Naples or the very popular holiday area around Sorrento. Many people combine their trip to Pompeii in one full day with Mount Vesuvius, the famous volcano.

As Pompeii re-opens after the enforced Coronavirus closure, visitors will see that all the recommended measures are in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit. They have also opened up new houses and gardens that have never been seen by the public before, to help encourage and reward visitors to the site.

Pompeii, the archaeological site, is part of Pompeii, a sizable town to the south of Naples, midway between Naples and Sorrento. The regular Circumvesuviana trains run about twice an hour between the Naples and Sorrento stopping at Pompeii. Trains are cheap and crowded, in many ways the journey experience is more like a Metro train than a “proper” train.

Getting to Pompeii independently

For independently minded travellers using public transport the trip is going to involve a trip on Circumvesuviana train from Naples or Sorrento to Pompeii Scavia train station, crudely half way long the route about 30 minutes from either.

If you are travelling from Rome , the Circumvesuviana trains depart from a station adjacent to the main Naples Centrale station where the inter-city trains arrive.

How long do you need at Pompeii?

The Pompeii site is vast.

If you have a deep interest in the subject matter you will need all day, most leisure tourists may spend 2 hours, 3 hours at most.

Luggage and bags

Luggage or bags larger than 30x30x15cm are not allowed into Pompeii.

There is a cloakroom at the entrance gates where you can leave bags and there is a commercial left luggage facility by the Circumvesuviana train station.

Three Pompeii entrance gates

There are three main entrance gates. Two gates are close together at the south western corner of the Pompeii site, one by the Circumvesuviana train station, the other by where all the coaches deposit their passengers-quite close by.

The other entrance main gate (Piazza Anfitheatro) is about 15 minutes walk to the east in the town of Pompeii itself. The public bus to Mount Vesuvius terminates here.

Facilities within Pompeii and at entrance gates

It is worth emphasising that once inside Pompeii, facilities are minimal and totally non-commercial. There is just one small restaurant/cafe and rest room facility in the middle of the site, plus rest rooms at the entrances.

This is not Disneyland, don't expect ice-cream stands and other commercial distractions scattered around the ruins.

The whole site is also very exposed with minimal shade, so it is imperative you bring lots of sunscreen, a hat and water. If you forget, make sure you get supplies from the tourist village outside before you enter.

The cobbled and rough nature of the surface means that wheelchairs and prams are impractical. Most small children will get bored very quickly.

Do I need a tour guide or an audio guide at Pompeii?

There is very little in the way of information within Pompeii describing what you are viewing.

If you want to make sense of what you are viewing you really do need a tour guide, an audio guide or a very good guide book. No audio guide is provided with admission.

When you buy your ticket there should be available a map of the site. Normally it's more a matter of you asking for a map than them giving you one, but make sure you don't leave the entrance area without one.

There is also a small complementary booklet called “A brief guide to Pompeii”. Again you may have to go looking for it. Inside the booklet are notes against all the locations on the audio tour. It is worth the effort seeking this out.

Once you are inside the site there is little in the way of information available to make sense of what you are viewing.

You can hire guides that hang around the ticket desks. Quality is variable (as are visitors requirements) so do spend some time talking to the guide before you commit, at least be comfortable you can understand what they are saying.

For most independent visitors who want information about what they are seeing (recommended) the audio tours seem to be the most popular guide. You hire them at a separate kiosk by the admissions desk.

Like most such devices worldwide, they are a bit dry and do tend to drone on a bit but there are enough nuggets of great information to make them worthwhile and are not expensive.

If you go to the  Piazza Anfiteatro  entrance, you won’t be able to skip the line.

Each ticket only allows one entry into the Pompeii ruins.

Suppose you have bought your  Pompeii tickets online . In that case, you must show the voucher you received in your email to the dedicated online ticket desk at the ‘ Porta Marina Superiore ’ or ‘ Porta Marina Inferiore .’ They will give you a physical ticket, with which you can take the skip-the-line lane and enter the ruins.

The tickets for the attraction are not timed.

Some of the exhibits at Pompeii are not suitable for kids – some are too graphic, and some are sexual. However, there is so much exciting stuff for kids that it would be criminal to keep them away from Pompeii. If you are visiting Pompeii with kids, we recommend this  guided tour customized for kids .

How to go from Rome to Pompeii

Pompeii ruins are in Campania, Italy, 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Naples.

Pompeii’s location is at the southeastern base of Mount Vesuvius, which didn’t go in its favor when the volcano erupted.

The ancient Roman city had been strategically built at the mouth of the Sarnus (modern Sarno) River. Get Directions.

There are three ways to get to Pompeii – take a train or a bus or book a tour, including transportation.

Distance between Rome and Pompeii

Pompeii is 250 km (155 miles) from Rome by road.

If you travel by road, you can cover this distance in about two and a half hours.

The railway distance is only 212 km (132 Miles), but because you have to change trains in Naples, the train journey also takes two and a half hours.

Pompeii by bus

A bus is a recommended option only if you are already in Naples.

SITA local buses leave Nuova Marina port in Naples to Pompeii every half hour.

The bus ticket, which costs a little less than €3 one way, can be bought from the SITA office at Nuova Marina port.

The journey time is approximately 35 minutes.

Train from Rome to Pompeii

Pompeii day trip by train is the best option if you are holidaying in the Italian capital.

This trip to Pompeii has two legs:

Rome to Naples by train

Every day, there are 16 trains which leave Roma Termini station in Rome for Naples Central station.

If you buy a Rome to Naples ticket on a high-speed train (Frecciarossa or Frecciabianca), you can save travel time.

Your train from Rome will arrive at the  Naples Centrale station , which is meant for inter-city trains.

Important: Book Rome to Naples high-speed train tickets at least a week to ten days in advance for cheap rates. If you book a day or two before your Pompeii visit, the return tickets can cost you 60+ Euros per person. In such a case, it is much wiser to book a Rome to Pompeii day trip , which includes transportation.

Naples to Pompeii by train

Once you reach Naples, you must get onto a Circumvesuviana train towards Pompeii.

From the Naples station for inter-city trains, you must get to the adjacent station from where Circumvesuviana trains depart.

The frequency of Circumvesuviana trains is one every half hour.

You must get off the Circumvesuviana train at Pompei Scavi station , located 50 meters (164 ft) from the entrance to Pompeii.

The journey from Naples central to Pompei Scavi (also known as Pompeii train station) is approximately 45 minutes.

Important: Some tourists don’t want the hassle of finding Rome to Pompeii train times, booking tickets, etc. So, they opt for either Pompeii day trips from Rome or Pompeii coach tours from Naples .

On weekdays, Pompeii ruins open at 9 am, and on weekends, they open at 8.30 am.

In the peak months of April to October, Pompeii closes at 7 pm, and the attraction closes early at 5 pm from November to March. 

The last entry is 90 minutes before closing time.

Note:  Since tourists combine nearby archaeological sites such as Herculaneum, Oplontis, Boscoreale, and Stabia, they visit Pompeii ruins. Their timing is similar.

Pompeii’s archaeological area is closed on three days – 1 January, 1 May, and Christmas on 25 December.

Pompeii is 44 square hectares and will take more than two days to explore. 

However, if you were to focus only on the highlights of Pompeii, you need three hours.

If you are traveling with kids and seniors, a similar highlights-only tour will last four hours.

Note:  Many tourists want to know if it is possible to  combine the Pompeii visit with Herculaneum  ruins. Yes, it is possible.

The best time to visit Pompeii is before 10 am.

Coaches start bringing in large tour groups by 10.30 am and crowd the ticketing counters, the lines to enter the ruins, and its famous attractions.

The next best time to visit Pompeii ruins is 3 pm because, after lunchtime, the massive crowd has started to leave or has already left.

During the peak season, the ruins are open till 7 pm, so even if you start at 3 pm, you get four hours to explore. 

During the non-peak months, the ruins close at 5 pm.

Note: If you stay in Rome or Naples, it is almost impossible to reach Pompeii by 10 am. This is all the more reason for you to book your  Pompeii tickets in advance  so that you can enter the ruins the moment you arrive.

How to avoid the crowd

There are two places where you may want to avoid the crowd:

At the ticketing lines

According to the management at Pompeii ruins, during the peak months, one may end up waiting in the ticket counter lines for a minimum of 30 minutes to an hour (pic above).

The only way to avoid the long lines at the ticketing counters of Pompeii is by buying Pompeii tickets online , in advance.

Inside the ruins

Pompeii is crowded from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm and it is best to avoid star attractions of Pompeii ruins during this period.

Use the Pompeii map , and avoid the crowd-pullers.

Tourists visiting as part of group tours get back to their coaches by 12.30 pm to 1 pm.

Once they all leave, you can get back to exploring the must-sees in Pompeii.

Low season: November to March High season: April to October Busiest months: May and August

Many tourists decide to visit Pompeii while they are staying in Naples.

Since there are many convenient ways to get to Pompeii from Naples, Pompeii tours are pretty popular.

Naples to Pompeii is a half-hour journey – around 24 Kms (15 Miles).

From Naples: Half-day visit to Pompeii

This tour from Naples to Pompeii starts at 10 am and lasts four hours.

If you are in Sorrento and want to visit Pompeii, you have two options – take the train or the bus.

Sorrento to Pompeii by train

The cheapest way to do this is to book your  Pompeii ticket in advance , and on the day of the visit, take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii.

Circumvesuviana trains run between Sorrento and Naples and, in 20 minutes, can drop you at Pompeii.  Train schedule

Entry to the Pompeii ruins is very close to the Circumvesuviana station.

The train times between Sorrento to Pompeii are very convenient – one every 30 minutes all day long.

Sorrento to Pompeii by bus

If you don’t want to take the train from Sorrento, you can opt for the coach tour.

Since Sorrento is a small town, you will be picked up from your hotel at 10 am.

Distance from Sorrento to Pompeii is 26 Km (16 Miles), and travel by road takes approximately 45 minutes.

At Pompeii, your guide will be waiting for you.

After a two-hour guided tour of the ruins of Pompeii, you will get back to your vehicle and get back to your hotel.

To get to Pompeii ruins, you have three options – public transport, your car, or a coach tour.

Public transport

You can take a  local bus  from Positano to Sorrento and the  Circumvesuviana train  to Pompeii Scavi station.

After the 40-minute bus journey and 20 minutes on the train, you will be right at the entrance of the Pompeii ruins.

Private transport

For approximately €200, you can get a private driver to pick you up from your hotel in Positano and drop you at Pompeii.

They then wait for you while you enjoy the ruins and drive you back.

Whatever your mode of transport from Positano to Pompeii, you will still need a ticket to enter the ruins .

The best and most convenient way is to book a coach tour from Positano to Pompeii.

To get to Pompeii from Naples you can take a Trenitalia commuter train which costs just over 3 € and takes only 40 minutes . There are frequent trains throughout the day, so you don't have to worry too much about schedules and you can buy your ticket at the same station in Piazza Garibaldi in Naples.

The best stop to get off is Porta Marina , as it is the closest to the access to the archaeological site of Pompeii. Although this option is easy, quick and inexpensive, there is nothing like taking an organized tour to soak up all the history the ruins of Pompeii have to tell.

You know it. The tour with the guide holding up a sign, umbrella or some other object so you don’t lose your group. Though it doesn’t really matter if you do lose your group – it’s so large, you have to battle your way to the front to even hear what the guide is saying. And that’s not the only battle; if you want any decent photos, you’re no doubt sighing in annoyance as you try to avoid your fellow tour group members’ heads or, worse of all, their totally obnoxious iPads as they too try to snap photos of the sights. No, thank you! Instead, try this do-it-yourself tour of Pompeii.

In 79 AD somewhere around 20,000 Pompeians went about their daily lives giving nary a thought to the volcano they lived alongside. August 24th would change their lives forever. On that fateful day as Mt. Vesuvius spewed, though much of the city was destroyed, Pompeii was also buried under 20 feet of ash and pumice.

Centuries of history were sealed away until 1748. It was Rocque Joaquin de Acubierre that discovered Pompeii with intentional excavations after Herculaneum was accidentally discovered in 1738, when workers were digging the foundation for the King of Naples’ summer palace. Due to the lack of air and moisture, artifacts buried under the ash and pumice at both archeological sites were extremely well preserved. It’s no wonder that Pompeii is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy and some 2 million people make the trek south to see it every year.

There are several ways to visit Pompeii: on a pre-booked guided tour, to hire a Pomeii guide on the spot (the going rate is €100-115 and official Pompeii tour guides are identified by a badge and certified as guides by the Campania region), to rent a Pompeii audio guide (which is simply a recording of Pompeii’s Little Red Book that hawkers will be pedaling near the Porta Marina entrance), or on a self guided tour of Pompeii. Planning Your Self Guided Tour of Pompeii

How long does it take to see Pompeii? That’s entirely up to you! With a pre-booked Pompeii guided tour, most tours spend 3-4 hours visiting selective sites within Pompeii. With a Pompeii self guided tour, you determine how much time you plan to spend or have to spend at Pompeii, and then plan your visit accordingly. You should allow at least 3 – 4 hours for your Pompeii self guided walking tour, and you can cover quite a bit of the site in that amount of time if you’re armed with the tools and a plan. Pompeii is big enough that you could easily make a full day of visiting it.

Finding Your Way Around on Your Self Guided Pompeii Tour

As I mentioned, your ticket includes a map and small pocket guide to Pompeii, which leads you number by number through the not-to-miss sights at Pompeii. And if you’re not a great map reader, you can use the app with location services turned on to guide you from sight to sight (this function will require an internet connection). If you’re not on any sort of time schedule, you can always wander the site and use the location feature to tell you more about which building you’ve stumbled upon.

Our Recommended Must-See Sights at Pompeii

It’s best to enter Pompeii from the Porta Marina entrance. Don’t miss the Forum, which was Pompeii’s commercial, political and religious center. Alongside the Forum, visit the Grain Stores where you can see many of the plaster casts of Vesuvius victims.

Clear on the opposite end of Pompeii and following Via dell’Abbondanza is the Amphitheatre, which was built in on the outskirts of Pompeii. It’s well worth the walk as the Amphitheatre is the oldest building of its kind in the world. Like the Colosseum in Rome , gladiators had bloody battles with wild animals while some 20,000 spectators watched.

Continue wandering this end of the archeological site and make your way back toward the Porta Marina gate via the Necropolis. You’ll find many beautiful tombs and gardens and you’ll practically have the area to yourself. You’ll also pass by the Villa dei Misteri if you’re following this route, which is a project to cultivate grape vines and produce wine from the very spot where vines grew in Pompeii some 2000 years ago. Only 1700 bottles are produced and they are auctioned off, so you can’t purchase or taste this special wine unfortunately. But the vineyard set in the ruins is truly unique.

Other Tips for Visiting Pompeii

Wear flats. The streets are very uneven and heels or even wedges are completely unsuitable for walking around the site. For this same reason, if you have little kids you’ll want to bring a carrier as opposed to a stroller, which we imagine would be incredibly hard to push over the stepping stones.

Bring bottled water. It’s perfectly fine to bring it in and you’ll be glad you did with the sun blazing on all those ruins.

You can even bring food in if you plan to spend the day at Pompeii. There is a restaurant on the ground, but there is also a picnic area near Amphitheatre Square and Casina dell’Aquila.

It’s also good to know that any type of bag exceeding 30 x 30 x 15 cm is not allowed inside Pompeii. There are luggage deposit services available at all three entrance gates if you do have a bag that needs storing while you visit Pompeii.

• By train: Pompeii can be reached by train on Circumvesuviana . On the Naples – Sorrento line, use the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri stop. On the Naples – Poggiomarino line, use the Pompei Santuario stop.
• By bus: Pompeii can be reached by bus from Naples or Salerno on SITA . The stop is Pompei (Piazza Esedra).
• By car: Pompeii can be reached on the motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompei ovest) or motorway A3 Salerno-Napoli (exit Pompei est).
• Pompeii is open November – March daily from 8:30am – 5pm (last admission is 3:30pm)  and April – October from 8:30am – 7:30pm (last admission is 6pm). Pompeii is closed on January 1, May 1, and December 25.
• Admission is €13 and is a single day ticket. A global ticket (Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis, Stabia, and Antiquarium of Boscoreale) is available for €22 and is valid for 3 days.
• Audio guides are available at Porta Marina entrance in Italian, English, French, German and Spanish for €6.50 or €10 for two.
• There is a storage room for bags, strollers, and anything else you might not want to lug around Pompeii located at the Porta Marina entrance.

DIY Touring is the only way I like to tour a place – I just don’t like schedules, especially when I’m traveling. Sure it’s nice having a guide explain everything, but you can always overhear what some guide is saying if the place is busy enough, haha. I just prefer to wander about and read the plaques at the sites. Though having a little guide book/app sounds even better!

When touring sites like Pompeii, we also much prefer DIY. We want to be able to spend time at the buildings or monuments that interest us and quickly move on from those that don’t. Group tours, even if they’re small group tours, just don’t give you that flexibility. There are other things, like say a walking tour of a city or a food tour, where we loved short small group tours though.

Thanks for this, I went about 10 years ago with a guide and we are taking our daughter next month and I’ve been debating whether or not to get a guide upon arrival or do it ourselves between this app and some guidance from Rick Steves.

I think I would have enjoyed my visit to Pompeii much more, if I wasn’t part of a tour group. Like you said, the groups are too big to hear anything anyways and, my least favourite part is how they rush you through the site. I much preferred my visit to Ostia Antica over Pompeii because I went alone and could linger as long as I liked, plus there were no crowds. I had the place practically all to myself!

I would go back to Pompeii though to give it a second chance, but next time I would do a do-it-yourself tour!

We saw tour groups and how they were rushed through. Definitely not our style! We haven’t been to Ostia Antica yet. We’ll have to check it out. Any place that doesn’t have a crowd entices us.

There are several places just outside of the Pompeii ruins, but we’d suggest Il Ristorante Maccarone. They have really good pizzas and other dishes typical of the area.

Thanks for the great details here. I’m planning a visit to Pompeii on a cruise stop at Naples. I had planned to take a guided tour that included the Vesuvius but my wife thought it would be to hard so after some research, I ended up on your Do it yourself guide of Pompeii so we’ll give it a try based on your tips.

I’m also taking note of one of your restaurant tip Il Ristorante Maccarone as we’ll have some time to eat before getting back to the ship.

Do you have some useful information to get to Pompeii from Naples’ port (taxi, train, bus, else)?

It would be quite expensive to take a taxi to Pompeii and the traffic in Naples can be atrocious. The center of Naples is easy walking distance from the cruise port, so you can easily take the train to Pompeii. Pompeii can be reached by train on Circumvesuviana. On the Naples – Sorrento line, use the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri stop. On the Naples – Poggiomarino line, use the Pompei Santuario stop.

We are visiting Pompeii on 22nd July and I keep seeing different views on booking ‘skip the line’ tickets for Pompeii Ruins. We are going independently and this post is the best I’ve seen so I’m confident that the replies will be very useful.

Hi Caroline,

We didn’t have to wait in line long, and that’s typically the case if you arrive at opening. Peak time at the ticket offices is from 10-11am when most groups and visitors arrive. Especially in July, it’s best to go early anyway because it just gets so incredibly hot.

We are coming over for a European holiday from Australia and Pompeii is on our to do list in November. Do we just pay the entry when we get there or do you have to pre book entry tickets for a self guided tour. We have zero interest in being on any kind of tour anywhere as we also prefer to do our own thing. Any help would be appreciated 🙂

No, there are toilet facilities throughout the archaeological site, not only at the entrance. As for the walk from the train/bus, the closest stop is the Pompeii stop. It is about a 20 minute walk to the entrance of the archaeological site, and it is flat.

I have some questions with regards to travelling to Pompeii.

Are you able to send me your travel itinerary and do you recommend that I do not purchase the online ticket with the gudied tour. As I am looking at a cheaper alternative to go for a day tour in Pompeii.

We lived in Italy, so we just made a day trip to Pompeii while staying on the Amalfi Coast.

If you are looking for the cheapest way to visit Pompeii, then that would be by the do-it-yourself visit as we recommend here. You can download the free PDF we linked to that tells you about Pompeii. You would pay the admission at Pompeii and it’s a few euros more if you also get the audio guide there.

We don’t not recommend taking a tour. As we mentioned in our article, Walks of Italy has very good tours and we do recommend them. It’s worth considering doing the day tour with Walks as their guides are very good and you skip the line. Their groups are small with no more than 15 people, so you’re not fighting a bus load of others to hear the guide and see inside the buildings. We’re just telling you how you can also do it yourself if you don’t want to take a tour. What we DON’T recommend is the overpriced private guides available for hire at Pompeii itself or massive bus tours with huge groups.

Jennifer and Tim: Thanks for your great article. We are coming to Naples on a cruise, the itinerary states that we land at 7 am and depart at 6 pm. We are three adults, from Canada, and we like walking, We are not too keen on driving to Pompeii ourselves.

What do you suggest is the best way to see Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius given our time frame. It will be on Aug 9 – yes likely extremely hot!

You can easily get to Pompeii from Naples on your own. Is the ship docking right in Naples? If so, you can by either bus or train from Naples to Pompeii.

By train: Pompeii can be reached by train on Circumvesuviana. On the Naples – Sorrento line, use the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri stop. On the Naples – Poggiomarino line, use the Pompei Santuario stop. By bus: Pompeii can be reached by bus from Naples or Salerno on SITA. The stop is Pompei (Piazza Esedra).

As for Mt. Vesusvius, there are tourist buses that go right from Pompeii train station. I’d recommend taking the bus company Busvia del Vesuvio https://busviadelvesuvio.com/en/ . It departs hourly between 9am – 3pm and the tour to Mt. Vesuvius takes 2.5 hours.

If the ship isn’t docking right in Naples, you may want to check if the ship offers an excursion to Pompeii as it may be difficult and expensive to get from the ship to Naples to change to the bus or train.

Just take a big bottle of water since the day will be hot!

Hi, Thank you for the information, it is a great help in the decision to do the tour by ourselves at our own pace.

It has been recommended that we book on-line entrance and the audio-guide, but I was wondering it this is absolutely necessary. There are a number of different sites with different prices for on-line tickets, with or without audio-guide so it is confusing which to use.

We are pensioners, going on August 14th and not all too Iphone/smart phone savy so prefer printed tickets.

Any suggestions regarding the tickets/audio-guide would be greatly appreciated! And yes we will be using the PDF as a reference!

The official online ticket office for Pompeii is TicketOne. You can get your tickets online in advance, which I do recommend doing as the busiest time will be in August and you don’t need to wait in line at the ticket booth. Do you mean without a ticket? No, you can’t enter Pompeii without a ticket. The site is ticketed in order to preserve it. But you don’t have to visit with a guide.

I come from a volcanic country (New Zealand) and was always terrified and fascinated by Pompeii. Lucky enough to go there a few years ago. Italy is a museum, incredible!

I would recommend spending a couple of days at Pompers… it’s huge. As you say, a small tour, then maybe download a guide and self navigate.

And Herculean next time too!

Maybe hire a campervan and follow the coast.

Hi…my friend and I are both elderly. Are there any vehicles, such as golf carts, that are available at Pompeii and Herculaneum for those who struggle with extended walking?
