All passengers are required to have a ticket, regardless of age. Passengers under the age of 21 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

All passengers will select their own seats when purchasing tickets online. There are two classes of tickets for this cruise: Standard Seating and Premium Seating.

  • Premium Seating includes seats that are most-desirable, including window seats, outdoor seats, and seats closer to entertainment. These seats are priced at a premium.
  • Standard Seating is more affordable, and includes seats located toward the middle of the deck, in higher traffic areas, or may have partially obstructed views. As a courtesy, we also offer seats for those with mobility concerns as Standard Seats.

Below is more information about the different areas of the ship:

Lake Map

The largest area on the M/S Mount Washington, the Main Deck offers the most amenities of any section of the ship, including restrooms, buffet, bar, and gift shop.

On Dinner Cruises, entertainment will be offered on the Main Deck, which has the largest dance floor on board.

The Main Deck is also the handicapped-accessible area of the ship. Passengers with mobility concerns or difficulty with stairs must be seated here.

Lake Map

The Promenade is the outside walkway on the second deck of the ship, including a seating area located on the bow. This area of the ship offers beautiful views of the lake in a completely outdoor setting.

Passengers seated on the Promenade will need to go inside the ship for buffet service, bar service, and entertainment.

Please note that the Promenade is an outdoor deck. Passengers in this area should plan accordingly. In the event of severe winds or inclement weather, passengers will be directed to an indoor area of the ship.

Lake Map

Captains Lounge

Located on the second deck directly under the wheelhouse, the Captains Lounge is a relaxing, quieter area of the ship with decor and memoribilia that celebrates the individuals who have served as Captain of the M/S Mount Washington. Popular for small parties and more intimate conversation, this indoor lounge offers panoramic views of the Lake Winnipesaukee with doors leading directly to the outside decks.

Passengers seated in the Captains Lounge are near the second deck buffet area, and can order beverages from the Flagship Lounge or on the Main Deck.

Lake Map

Flagship Lounge

Located on the second deck of the ship toward the stern, the Flagship Lounge is a larger lounge featuring photography and artifacts that celebrate the flagship of the Winnipesaukee Fleet. Popular for larger parties and private events, this indoor lounge has a stage for live entertainment, dance floor, and full bar.

During some dinner cruises, entertainment may be offered in Flagship Lounge. Please check the entertainment schedule for details.

Lake Map

3 rd Deck Forward

Located directly behind the wheelhouse, this open air section of the ship is located under a large awning to provide a partial shelter from the elements.

Passengers seated on the third deck must travel to the second deck for buffet service, and bar service is offered on the third deck, weather permitting.

Please note that the Third Deck is an outdoor deck and passengers in this area will be exposed to the elements and should plan accordingly. In the event of severe winds or inclement weather, passengers will be directed to an indoor area of the ship.

Lake Map

3 rd Deck Aft

Located on the third deck on the stern of the ship, this open air section is completely open to the elements, with casual, communal seating that makes it easy for passengers to mingle and make new friends.

Please note that the Third Deck is an outdoor deck. Passengers will be exposed to the elements and should plan accordingly. In the event of severe winds or inclement weather, passengers will be directed to an indoor area of the ship.

Any seat on the M/S Mount Washington offers spectacular views of Lake Winnipesaukee, but some areas offer slightly different experiences.

New in 2023 – Select-a-Seat For a nominal fee, passengers may select their seat when purchasing tickets. Your Select-a-Seat ticket also includes early boarding, so you can board the ship and relax as quickly as possible.

Please note that the Third Deck is an outdoor deck and passengers in this area will be exposed to the elements and should plan accordingly. In the event of severe winds or inclement weather, crew will attempt to direct passengers to an indoor area of the ship. Note that indoor seating is not guaranteed and may not be within the same ticket class as was purchased.

Lake Map

Buffet Service

For your convenience, the buffet will be open from the time you board the ship, until about 90 minutes after the cruise departs.

Our buffets are all-you-care-to-enjoy, and our galley crew will continue to prepare and replenish items throughout the cruise.

How To Plan A Romantic Getaway In Portsmouth, New Hampshire

C harming local shops, delicious culinary options, painterly sunsets, historic buildings, and a walkable downtown along the beautiful Piscataqua River make Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a fun getaway destination. By simply adding a few couple-focused itinerary experiences, it is easy to plan a romantic Portsmouth interlude.

Some information in this piece was obtained during a sponsored press trip, but all recommendations are my own.

Romantic Stay In Portsmouth, New Hampshire

The most important part of a romantic getaway is booking the right hotel. When looking for a romantic hotel, you want to consider the ease of your stay. The hotel should be beautiful, that’s a given. You should be able to walk out of the door, preferably hand-in-hand, and enjoy the quaint charm of the city. A personalized romance hotel package easily enhances your special stay.

The Residence Inn Portsmouth Downtown/Waterfront offers all these experiences and more. With a pre-stay call to the hotel, you can easily set up a custom-room romance setup to surprise your special someone. Steps from the front door are all the waterfront restaurants and pubs. It also offers easy access for strolling the brick sidewalks to meander to and around the downtown shops and eateries.

Pro Tip: Valet your car and enjoy your Portsmouth getaway on foot — no parking worries.

Sunset Cruise

Sunsets are intrinsically romantic and sunset sails with your favorite someone set an alluring tone for the evening. Portsmouth Harbor Cruises offers a 1.5-hour sunset cruise around Portsmouth Harbor and the Piscataqua River. On a perfect night, the sun sets red, orange, and pink, decorating the sky with a kaleidoscope of color. Set your camera on night mode to capture the stunning light and dancing reflections off the water.

As you return to the dock, the city lights, framed by one of the river-crossing bridges, imparts a warm, twinkling glow of possibilities.

Pro Tip: Portsmouth Harbor Cruises operates out of a small shack in the harbor section of the waterfront — between the working harbor and the waterfront restaurants and bars.

Dining In Portsmouth, New Hampshire

After your romantic sunset cruise, enjoy a table for two at one of Portsmouth’s many restaurant options. From brew-pub hopping to spectacular views of the city and harbor to charming coffee shops, you will find lots of great eats in Portsmouth.

Rooftop At The Envio

Elegant yet cozy, the Rooftop at The Envio is a fantastic choice for a dinner for two. Enjoy dinner on the porch or cocktails on the rooftop deck. Rooftop at The Envio is perched high above Portsmouth offering one of the best panoramic views of the city.

The Envio Shrimp Cocktail is a perfect starter — jumbo shrimp with a not-too-spicy Bloody Mary cocktail sauce and a smooth honey lemon aioli. A New England coastal classic, dive into Envio’s Grand Maine Lobster Roll — succulent lobster tossed in a lemon mayonnaise on a perfectly toasted brioche bun. Turf lovers will enjoy the Korean barbecued boneless short rib with tamari lime carrots, broccolini, and bamboo sticky rice.

Pro Tip: Secure reservations for after your sunset cruise. Envio is a just short walk from where the cruise docks.

Thirsty Moose Taphouse

If your dining style is a sports bar tavern, then the Thirsty Moose Taphouse is the place for your romantic dinner. Great pub grub is served up in the large, open dining room surrounded by wall-to-wall televisions projecting all the games all the time.

Pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and other traditional pub bites grace the extensive menu. A delicious and “healthy” starter, the fried brussel sprouts are coated with red pear, gorgonzola, bacon, and balsamic glaze. Another great starter are the prime rib sliders smothered in caramelized onions and horseradish sour cream sauce for the win. An alternative to their yummy pizzas and burgers, a tasty entrée is the Create Your Own Mac & Cheese. Fun add-ons like pulled pork, hot dogs, steak tips, or buffalo chicken make it uniquely your own.

With dozens of regional beers on tap, it is fun to taste test your way to a favorite brew.

Popovers On The Square

A leisurely brunch is key to every romantic getaway. Downtown, Popovers On The Square serves delectable breakfast and brunch items to satisfy the morning hangries. Thick French toast sticks are served with whipped cream, fresh berries, and New Hampshire maple syrup. Classic brunch fare, the smoked salmon plate served with cream cheese, pickled red onions, and a popover is delicious.

Don’t neglect to try the namesake popovers with creamy maple butter.

Strawbery Banke Museum

History buffs will enjoy Portsmouth’s Strawbery Banke Museum — a living museum of collected homes in the Puddle Dock neighborhood. The museum’s buildings and artifacts date from when the Indigenous Abenaki people settled the area to present day life. Buildings were collected and moved to Puddle Dock, allowing the museum to showcase the changing day-to-day lives of early settlers through historic exhibits and costumed docents.

Buildings from a wide timeline include the Goodwin Mansion circa 1811, the Penhallow House circa 1750, the Lowd House circa 1810, and the Reproduction Wigwam built in 2021. Beautiful heirloom gardens, herb gardens, and historical landscapes bring an artistic and practical touch to the museum grounds.

Pro Tip: The museum is a 15-minute walk from downtown Portsmouth through a charming old neighborhood.

Prescott Park

After your visit to the Strawbery Banke Museum, head toward the waterfront to enjoy Prescott Park . Ten acres of landscaped garden beds, sculptures, and park benches; it is a lovely spot to hold hands and stroll along the meandering pathways.

Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion

Part of the New Hampshire State Park system, the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion was home to New Hampshire’s first governor, Benning Wentworth. The massive 40-room mansion sits on the banks of Little Harbor. For a small fee, you can visit the interior of the mansion and garner a peek into the aristocratic life of Colonial New England.

For some fresh air and sunshine, take the easy 1.5-mile hike on the Little Harbor Loop Trail , which takes you through Creek Farm and the Portsmouth Conservation Land woodlands and waterfront.

Shopping for a memento of your wonderful getaway with your favorite person reflects your personality as a couple. The perfect souvenir could be fine jewelry from Market Square Jewelers or Springer’s Jewelers . Foodies will go wild over the selection of finishing salts at Salt Cellar . Explore a few unique flavor-enhancers like Cyprus Black Sea Salt, Ginger Root Sea Salt, Porcini Mushroom Sea Salt, Icelandic Licorice Sea Salt, and other mind bending flavors. During your walk through downtown, you will discover independent antique shops, galleries, boutiques, and bookstores.

The Hill is a small section of Portsmouth where 17th- and 18th-century historic homes in the Italian North End neighborhood faced the urban renewal fight and won several victories. Much of the neighborhood fell to the modern-day projects that make Portsmouth the vibrant city it is today. Several of the historic buildings were moved to the Strawbery Banke Museum. Some were left standing and are still privately owned, while others have been reimagined into businesses.

Portsmouth Road Trip

Portsmouth is between Boston, Massachusetts, to the south and Bangor, Maine, to the north. It is close to vibrant and picturesque coastal cities. If you have a few more days to extend your getaway, consider a Boston to Bangor road trip. A fun short trip from Portsmouth is to Freeport , Maine, home of the L.L. Bean flagship store.

Norfolk Dinner and Harbor Cruises

Norfolk is a waterfront city and the best way to see it is on one of the day cruises. Choose from dinner cruises, sailing ships, a paddlewheel ferry or a Naval Base cruise.

The four Norfolk harbor cruises are: Spirit of Norfolk, American Rover, Victory Rover, and the Elizabeth River Ferry.

Spirit of Norfolk

The Spirit of Norfolk offers dinner cruises year round from downtown. Step aboard the Spirit of Norfolk and come alive for an afternoon or evening of all out fun on the Elizabeth River. You will dine, dance and enjoy entertainment performed by talented staff. All while being dazzled by the skyline of sights and views of the Navy's Atlantic Fleet.

American Rover

Sail the smooth waters of the Hampton Roads harbor on a real tall-ship. The American Rover sets sail from the Waterside in downtown Norfolk. Lend a hand with the sails or just relax and enjoy the sights. The American Rover's design was inspired by 19th century schooners, but it has all the modern amenities. Lots to do on the island. Ruins, monuments, dining, and swimming from the pier. The aquatic center is a must for kids. The ride out is amazing but thr time on tbe island can be short. Great way to start the day.

The very uncomfortable seating on the Challenger drives this low rating. Very narrow benches wrapping around the perimeter of the boat, with no back rests for the entire crowded ride out to the Isles of Shoals was terrible. Unacceptable. The indoor seating area smelled awful and was very stuffy. The narration was good when you could hear it above the engines. Crew was was very nice and everything ran on time. This is the first time we went out of Portsmouth Harbor. We will return back to taking the Uncle Oscar out of Rye Harbor.

Captain is very informative and good looking too. Took my mom who is 87, we both loved it. Thanks

I really love going out onboard the Thomas Leighton to the Isles of Shoals. This was my second time, and it is always a great time. David the narrator provides really interesting commentary on what you can see while going out and back, and also leads a walking tour of Star Island. The captain and the rest of the crew are really nice as well.

I won't bore you with how long I've procrastinated... always wanted to do this ...but there was always something in the way. So this year I finally booked the stop over tour for a dozen of us. From the very start booking with this company was absolutely user friendly.. every question ( I hope) one would have had it's answer on their site. When the day rolled around the weather was perfect. Parking was $5 in their lot. The other areas closest are the hotel lot across..or on street metered parking. There is a canopy with chairs to sit under after you check in. We boarded promptly and it really wasn't long before we were off cruising down the river. Again, the weather was perfect. It's amazing how the temperature drops once on the water. The trip was narrated. I found most to be of interest.. there is a tiki bar on the top deck . Downstairs snacks and another bar. We chose the top deck and were not disappointed. Some of us had a morning cocktail... I chose a spicy bloody Mary. It may have been the fact we were out in the sea air? But it was absolutely delicious! At one point we passed a salvaging operation of a yacht that had burned .. maybe a week before which sank 80+ feet down. So that was quite interesting. We landed on Star Island with the drop off being 1 hour. Unfortunately due to a conference we were not allowed in the hotel. Or the famous relaxing front porch. They operate a small gift shop apparently inside. But due to the circumstances they'd brought things out to sell in a gazebo.. some of my group took the narrated tour. Myself , I decided to stay closer to the dock and eat the simple lunch I'd packed , just enjoying the views. It was wonderful. Friends took several beautiful photos. While waiting I couldn't help but think how it must be to stay there for a weekend... Or week for that matter. It felt quite peaceful. So it became time to head back to the boat. We all met up again at the dock and boarded. The friendly crew do not skip a beat.. counting each as we all got on. Their attitudes were so friendly & nice it really added to what was already a great trip. We left on time heading back. Again, perfect on the water! We returned if I remember correctly 3:15. Which was exactly as expected. I can't emphasize how wonderful this was... It's one of the best 3.5 hours I've spent in a long time. The boat is clean, large enough where people are comfortable... The crew and staff I encountered were all excellent. I highly recommend you do this!

We took the 10:55 trip to the Isles of Shoals. Due to COVID restrictions the ship was sparsely attended, and we pretty much had run of the whole place. Everything was super clean, well marked and safe. The narration was excellent and the views even on an overcast day were spectacular. My son and I had a fantastic few hours off the coast of Portsmouth.

Had a sunny ride on this boat yesterday. It was a well- organized, chill adventure. + parking at the pier for $5 - have to move your car after the cruise (and have to wait for everyone in front of you to move too) + enough seating for everyone on small benches along the sides - not enough room to sit when the front got blasted with salt spray and people were forced inside, where they had to stand + good narration of the islands and landmarks we passed - very very short amount of time on Star Island itself. We barely got to the gazebo to eat our snacks before we had to turn around! + friendly service and a decently stocked bar I would go on this again but know it's less of a comfort / sailing experience and more of a ferry that gets you to the island.

Took tour of Isles of Shoals, stopping at Star Island. Boat was clean and snacks didn't seem too pricey. Boat was a little noisy, but I have never been on a small craft that wasn't.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, A tale of a delightful trip That started from this New Hampshire port, Aboard this touring ship. Our guide was a great storyteller As the ship left the shore 200 passengers set sail today For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.... STOP!!! This is review is not about Gilligan's Island, but about the Isles of Shoals sightseeing tour, a three hour tour. I'll leave the storytelling to the tour guide on the steamship. My buddy and I took the afternoon tour and had a great time recently. The Isles of Shoals sightseeing tour is a great way spend three hours and learn about the history of various places and landmarks from aboard the Thomas Laighton touring steamship. The Thomas Laighton is a cool ship, which has three levels with plenty of seating and standing areas. The top level (not covered) offers spectacular views of the scenery. The lower levels have two enclosed dining areas with snack bar/cocktail bar which offers hot dogs, nachos, vegetarian chili, chowder, chips, cookies, muffins, candy, Pepsi soft drinks, coffee, motion sickness pills, and souvenirs. There are a few beers on tap including Laighton Lager and the bartender can mix up several drinks including Bloody Marys and Tanqueray & Tonic. Restrooms located behind the snack bar. Smoking is allowed on the outdoor portions of the ship. The Thomas Laighton cruises down the Piscataqua River, through Portsmouth Harbor, and out to the Isles of Shoals and back, while the tour guide narrates the places and landmarks along the way. Sights on the tour include the Memorial Bridge (draw bridge will rise for ships to pass), Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the former Naval Prison (Alcatraz of the East), US Coast Guard Station, Victorian homes, lighthouses, historic forts, yacht clubs, hotels, churches, historic buildings, and more. There are 9 Isles of Shoals located approximately six miles from shore including Duck, Appledore, Smuttynose, Malaga, Cedar, Star, White, Seavey, & Lunging. The Thomas Laighton slowly cruises by the Isles and does not disembark on any of the Isles. The Shoals Marine Laboratory is in operation on Appledore Island, the largest of the Isles. Star Island, the second largest Isle, has a hotel and chapel. Overall, we had a very enjoyable cruise. Our tour guide did an outstanding job giving a very thorough and fun history lesson describing the places we passed by, telling great stories and cracking a few jokes. The ride aboard the Thomas Laighton was calm and steady out on the waters. Sippin' some cocktails while taking in the postcard perfect views on a sunny August day, what more could one ask for!! RECOMMENDATIONS: Despite the warm summer temperatures, a windbreaker or long sleeve shirt is recommended since it can get very windy out on the water. Be very careful to hold onto anything loose including hats and cameras. I saw a cap blow off someone's head and into the water. Bring some binoculars for detailed viewing to enhance this unique experience. NOTES: Check out the website for the schedule, ticket prices and reservations at: http://www.islesofshoals.com 2007 Prices: Adults: $25; Juniors (13-17)/Seniors (60+)/Military: $22; Children (6-12): $15. PARKING: On site parking available for $4.00. Meter and garage parking are available within walking distance.

Great company, and a smooth ride to/from Star Island even though the weather wasn't the best. Can look forward to a cash bar with snacks, clean restrooms, and quite a bit of seating on each of the three floors. The staff was professional, timely, and we really enjoyed or time. My family rented the entire boat to get everyone over to Star Island for the wedding, so I imagine the experience would be a bit different loaded with a ton of people. Overall, highly recommend giving them a try.

My daughter bought me a tour as a birthday gift. I chose the Saturday afternoon tour. It was supposed to go to Tributary Brewing, SoMe Brewing, and Liar's Bench. They substituted Woodland Farms Brewery in Kittery for Liar's Bench. That makes sense as all three breweries were in Maine. The tour was very fun and the guides friendly and knowledgeable. Don't hesitate to ask for dining recommendations in Portsmouth. At each brewery, we got a number of samples of beer as well as a tour of the brewhouse. Tributary was especially interesting as the tour guide was Tod Mott, the owner and brewer.

diagram

We had an absolute blast on our growler tour over President's Day weekend. It can be chilly up in New Hampshire, but the bus was warm and the beer stops were phenomenal. If you're looking to learn about the craft brews in the area and want to meet some awesome people, granite state growler tours is your place to go. Thanks for a great afternoon!

The Great Bay , often too shallow for traditional sailboats, is perfect for a flat-bottomed gundalow to set sail along the serene shores. For 2023, we’ll be back on the Great Bay for August 29-31 and September 8-10. Stay tuned for updates or email us for us updates and ticket availability.

The Cochecho offers quiet passage through the river once used extensively for transporting brick by gundalow. We were happy to join in celebrating Dover NH’s  400th Anniversary as we led a parade on the Cochecoo on June 24, 2023. We sailed the Cochecho previously in 2016 & 2017.

We sailed from Newmarket’s Mill district in 2014 & May 2018 along the Lamprey River .

The  Merrimack River in Newburyport/Amesbury saw a gundalow sailing upriver of the bridges in 2022 and 2019. The Gundalow Piscataqua first sailed the Merrimack in 2017, which was the first time a gundalow sailed there since 1899! We plan to return again around September 2024.

The gundalow has also traveled up the Bellamy River in Dover in the fall of 2017-2019.

Homeschool Sail

Step aboard the Gundalow and head out on the Piscataqua River for an exciting 2 hour sail. While on board, participants will set the sail, steer the vessel, learn to navigate, tow for plankton, and explore the human impact on our watershed.  This educational program is geared towards students ages 7 and up.

Please email [email protected] if you would like to plan a homeschool sailing group for this season!
