Where Can I Find Summer Jobs in Tenerife in 2024?

The south of the island has the most job opportunities in the summer.

Head for the mass tourist resorts of Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos and Puerto de la Cruz.

Other popular resorts to look for Tenerife summer jobs include: the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Amarilla Golf, El Medano, Garachico, Guia De Isora, Los Gigantes, Playa De La Arena, Playa Paraiso, Puerto De Santiago and San Miguel De Abona.

Winter Jobs

You will need some sort of professional qualification such as PADI if you are to work at one of the dive centres.

These companies such as TUI who own Thompsons and First Choice hire summer holiday reps in Tenerife. This is a great way to get summer job with accommodation and food included.

If you just turn up in Tenerife at the start of the season your best option would be to find work in a bar or restaurant by asking around through word-of-mouth and getting to know people.

There are always sales positions available in telesales and telemarketing. Tenerife has a lot of timeshare companies and with it being such a major tourist destination there are all sorts of sales opportunities from excursions to day trips around the island.

To ensure you are successful in getting a job this summer you should arrive as early as possible, ideally in a month of May with some savings.

Renting an apartment on a long-term basis will cost from €400 for a studio or one bed apartment. A long-term let for a two bed apartment in Tenerife would be in the region of €750 a month plus bills. Many workers get together and share an apartment or just rent a room.

Do I Need to Speak Spanish?

If you want to find a job in Tenerife and you don’t speak any Spanish at all, we suggest you at least take a basic course to pick up enough words to get by.

Work opportunities in Tenerife

I think it is probably true to say that looking for work is never much fun, but trying to find jobs on Tenerife can be particularly difficult if you are in another country at the time. Jobs in Tenerife aim to provide you with information that will help you to find work abroad.

Because Tenerife is in the Schengen area it means that if you’re travelling for business for up to 90 days in a 180 day period, you may be able to do some business related activities without needing a visa or permit. These activities tend to be things like visiting a trade show, a work related exhibition, or a business meeting.

If you intend to do any paid work or if you’re planning to stay for longer than 90 days, it is very probable that you will need a visa or permit.

When you get a job in Tenerife legally, you should be given a contract which will likely last for 3 months. Once this period of time has elapsed, you will usually be given another 3 month contract (if the employer wants to keep you on). Employers can only give you these short term employment contracts for up to a year and then they need to offer you a permanent contract, if they want to keep you.

In the tourism sector there are still businesses which will take people on without a contract of employment. If you are looking for bar work, PR jobs, glass collecting or serving, then you can still find a job without too much trouble.

What does holiday rep involve?

You will be approaching tourists, trying to get them in to the bar or club you are working for. You will spend your evenings drinking and chatting up people. You will need to be outgoing, confident and be able to work in a party atmosphere.

Ticket Selling

Shot Selling

Working in a permanent party atmosphere where you will be selling a wide selection of shots, tubes and gas chambers. To do this job you have to be very outgoing and have the ability to be both fun and flirty.

Restaurant Work

PAY : This is dependent on the role and number of hours worked, but can be between 50-80 Euros a day/night - plus tips

HOURS : Dependent on the role, it can be any hours from 11am till 11pm. Usually 8 hours shifts.

You could be either in a PR role handing out leaflets for the restaurant, a waiter/waitress or kitchen work. A bubbly personality and a big smile will get you far working in the restaurants.

• Short hours

PAY : Pay is excellent in terms of hours you actually work. Between 50-80 Euro per shift.

HOURS : Varied depending on location but tend to be 1/2 hour shifts between 11pm-5am.

Dancing away on podiums in super clubs or amazing pool parties. You need to be physically fit for this role, and of course know how to dance.

Gain experience in both hospitality and marine conservation on this volunteering program based in Spain’s Canary Islands. Your volunteer work in Tenerife will focus on environmental education aimed at some of the many international tourists who visit the island each year. You’ll help these visitors to understand why they should choose an ethical whale and dolphin watching tour operator, and how they can do so. You’ll also educate the tourists about a range of other marine conservation topics such as why and how to keep beaches free of plastic.

Do you love the sea and want to contribute to conserving the world’s oceans and marine life? Are you not a fan of science or research-heavy tasks? Maybe you’re more of a people person and are considering a career in something like hospitality? Our Sustainable and Ethical Ecotourism volunteering program based on the island of Tenerife might be the right choice for you.

As a popular tourism destination, the island of Tenerife receives an estimated five million international visitors annually. Given the island’s natural resources and proximity to Europe it’s no wonder this island attracts so many visitors. Visitors like its subtropical climate, year-round warm waters and sunshine. Not to mention its beaches, 400 metres of coastline, and whale and dolphin watching tours where you might spot up to 28 different species. But while these resources attract visitors, the visitors put a strain on these resources. Effectively managing both international tourism and conservation is what sustainable, ethical and responsible ecotourism is all about.

Part of your volunteer work in Tenerife will be to educate tourists about the importance of choosing an ethical whale and dolphin watching tour provider. You’ll also teach them how to do that. Many of these ethical boats can be spotted because they are marked by the Blue Flag, a certification granted to them by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Certain beaches in Tenerife are also given these certifications.

You might also have the opportunity to engage with tourists over other topics related to sustainable, ethical and responsible ecotourism. For example: Why is it important to keep beaches clean? Or, why is swimming with dolphins unethical, and now illegal in Spanish territories such as the Canary Islands?

You’ll also participate in an ethical whale and dolphin watching program with a purpose – by studying the impact of environmental threats on these marine animals. Cleaning beaches of plastic pollution, fishing nets and other debris is also a part of this program.

Please note that this is not a diving program, although you can go for a recreational dive during your free time.

Location and life on base

Our base in the Canary Islands is located on the island of Tenerife. It’s situated near the three main harbours where visitors board Tenerife’s famous whale and dolphin watching tours.

The base is a basic but comfortable house with ample space to spread out for training, working through project data or just relaxing after a busy day. We cultivate a family atmosphere on base, cooking as well as tidying duties are shared on a rotation basis among staff and participants.

Depending on the weather conditions, participants can look forward to boat trips on the Atlantic Ocean to monitor the whales and dolphins found around Tenerife. On other days, participants might collect data on other marine species or conduct beach surveys, plastic pollution clean-ups or environmental awareness sessions with tourists visiting Tenerife. Participants will often start their mornings early with training, carrying out surveys or capturing collected data from marine research. Evenings are spent enjoying a meal and being debriefed on the activities of the day. Afterwards, there’s time to sit back and relax while chatting with your fellow participants.

Accommodation

Participants sleep in dorm rooms that can accommodate 4–6 people. Bathrooms with showers and flush toilets are shared. The accommodation is equipped with electricity and running water.

Staff and participants take it in turns to prepare meals according to a rota. Meals are usually simple but healthy, combining the flavours of Canary Island ingredients. Breakfasts may include cereals, eggs, toast, pancakes and fresh fruit. Depending on the preferences of participants, lunch and dinner options vary, but favourites include curries, pastas, salads and stir-fries. Participants can also buy their own snacks in town.

Transportation

A staff member will be at the airport to welcome you. From there, we’ll provide a transfer to our base location. Transport is also provided for project work unless the project site is within walking distance. On weekends, participants can visit local tourist attractions on foot, by bus or by taxi.

Communication

Wi-Fi is available on base for participants to use and there’s decent phone signal reception. Internet cafes can also be found in town.

Tenerife has a warm and pleasant climate, which is just one of the reasons why it’s such a popular year-round tourist destination. With an average temperature of 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) during the months of December, January and February and 24–28 °C (75–82 °F) during the months of June, July and August, most days are sunny and precipitation is minimal, except in the mountains.

Your impact

All of our programs have short, mid and long-term objectives that fit with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals or UN SDGs. This enables us to report on our collaborative impact across the world in a streamlined manner, measuring which UN SDGs we are making a substantial contribution to. Furthermore, this will help our local partners and communities measure and visualise their contribution to the UN SDGs.

Upon arrival to base, you will be educated about the history of the UN SDGs. You will learn about the specific goals of your location, the long-, mid- and short-term objectives, and also clarification of how your personal, shorter-term involvement contributes to these goals on a global level.

Our aim is to educate you on local and global issues, so that you continue to act as active global citizens after your program, helping to fulfil our mission of building a global network of people united by their passion to make a difference.

Tenerife is a popular tourist destination seeing up to five million international visitors a year. Many come to experience the biodiversity of this island. The region is known for its large population of whales and dolphins. The presence of sea turtles and other marine species make it an appealing location for tourists.

While tourism is the island’s largest source of income, the influx of tourists can lead to boat traffic, overfishing and excess waste on the island. Our partner works with local whale watching tour providers and other local organisations to monitor the impact of tourism on the marine environment to ensure that it’s managed in a sustainable and ethical way. In addition to tourism, the impact of other human activities on marine life is also monitored. The team in Tenerife collects data, inputs the information into databases and submits reports to local authorities to assist them with making decisions concerning marine resource management.

Whale and dolphin surveys

Our team monitors and collects data on whales, dolphins and other marine species spotted in the waters surrounding Tenerife. Movements and behaviours are recorded and photos are taken of sightings for later identification and cataloguing. The location is also mapped. All data collected is inputted into databases that contribute to ongoing research used by the government of the Canary Islands for local decision-making. Data analysed over time show trends which can be used for making further recommendations on tourism practices, fishing regulations, waste management and other factors impacting the marine and coastal environments of the Canary Islands. Our partner produces quarterly and annual reports to communicate research findings and other relevant updates.

Marine plastic pollution and beach cleanups

The team in Tenerife maintains an ongoing commitment to contributing towards waste management initiatives in the Canary Islands. They work with local communities and tourists to minimise plastic and other waste products. This work includes removing marine debris while on coastal surveys, and organising beach clean-ups.

Sustainable tourism and community awareness

Contributing to sustainable tourism by raising environmental awareness is a critical element of the program in the Canary Islands. Since tourism is the largest industry in the Canary Islands, it’s important that local communities and visiting tourists understand the impact of tourism on the environment and how they can contribute to sustainable practices. One of the ways in which this is actioned is for our staff and participants to join tourists on their whale watching tours and speak to them about ethical, sustainable and responsible ecotourism practices. The team also joins local communities on the beach and gets involved in local beach clean-up efforts.

Community engagement and environmental education

Our partner works with local communities to increase community engagement and awareness regarding local environmental initiatives. The team arranges beach clean-ups with the local community and facilitates environmental education workshops and mobile classrooms. Topics covered in these sessions include marine conservation, science and research; marine mammals and marine and coastal plastic waste pollution and management.

The main United Nations Sustainable Development Goal the Canary Islands team contributes towards is #14, Life Below Water.

Canary Islands long-term objectives

1. Provide a long-term and consistent collection of data, assessing the populations and behaviours of whale, dolphin and other marine species in the waters surrounding Tenerife. This is to be used for local sustainable tourism practices and coastal marine management and for a larger international understanding of changing marine ecosystems.

2. Increase the scientific output and awareness of the project through the publication of findings.

3. Assist with local marine and coastal waste management efforts through data collection, cleaning up beaches and other habitats and raising awareness around the importance of marine and coastal conservation as well as best practices in sustainability.

4. Raising awareness among tourists about sustainable and ethical tourism practices.

Joining a program not only allows participants to collaborate with communities or work toward preserving unique ecosystems but it also offers plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding area or travel further to see what other parts of the region have to offer.

Long term field staff are a great source of advice, and have helped us put together the following information on local travel options. Many decide to travel before or after their experience (subject to immigration restrictions), solidifying the lifetime friendships established on program. Please note that the below suggestions are not included in the program fee, and are for the individual to organise at their own expense.

Weekend trips

La Laguna Wander the streets of this historical town to see the most colourful and well-preserved buildings on the island of Tenerife.

Macizo de Anaga Biosphere Reserve This reserve has been recognised as a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2015 and contains the largest number of endemic species in Europe. It’s also a great place to enjoy scenic views.

Recreational diving or snorkeling There are plenty of opportunities to go for a recreational dive or snorkel in your free time and observe Tenerife’s famous diversity of marine life.

Beaches Visit Tenerife island’s many beaches with sands ranging from golden yellow to volcanic black.

Teide National Park This UNESCO World Heritage Siteboasts the highest mountain in all of Spain, the Pico del Teide volcano. Take a cable car up the mountain during the day or go star gazing at night.

Further travels

Spain is only about a three-hour flight from the Canary Islands and features warm weather, even more beaches and adventure activities. Enjoy the diversity of the iconic Spanish snacks known as tapas, experience the music and dance of Flamenco and see the artistic expression of Picasso, Dali, Goya and Gaudi on display. For those interested in cultural history, you can visit Spain’s more than 40 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Outer Island visits

The Canary Islands archipelago is made up of many islands and islets. Besides Tenerife there are also seven other main islands that are well worth the visit. They are: Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Graciosa, El Hierro, Lanzarote and La Palma. These locations can be much more remote and are less popular with tourists. As such, their natural environments are in a pristine condition rarely found anywhere in the world today This gives you the opportunity to observe marine life and wildlife left relatively undisturbed by human activities.

Cultural immersion

Engaging intimately with a new context teaches not only global awareness but adaptability and critical thinking, skills highly valued in the modern marketplace. Local and cultural immersion is encouraged on all our programs around the world, and is also one of the most enjoyable aspects of your experience. Luckily, there are many activities you can get involved with in your free time, or before and after your program. On our community programs the focus is on cultural topics, while on marine or wildlife programs the emphasis is more on the environmental element. Use your evenings and weekends to explore diverse and eclectic topics like Theravada Buddhism in Laos or how plastic pollution and climate change affects Indian Ocean coral.

Marine life and wildlife

The waters of the Atlantic surrounding the Canary Islands are home to resident species of whales and dolphins such as short-finned pilot whales and bottle-nosed dolphins. They also act as a passage for other migratory whales and dolphins species such as striped dolphins. These volcanic islands boast a series of distinctive microclimates which has led to the formation of a characteristic biodiversity. There are many endemic species such as the Atlantic Canary bird, the Tenerife Blue Chaffinch bird, the Canary Big-eared bat and the dragon tree.

Crafts and music

The Canary Islands have a strong tradition of creating local crafts, with the different islands often specialising in a particular craftwork. On the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera you can find basketware and pottery made in the Guanche style, as well as Vilaflor lacework. Also on La Gomera and the islands of El Hierro and La Palma you can find woven rugs. On Gran Canaria and Lanzarote islands you’ll find a small ukulele-style instrument known as a timple, that’s a symbol of the musical heritage of the Canary Islands, and can often be heard at traditional parties and dances.

Festivals and celebrations

Increasing Employability: Pre Departure Program Training:

Can I come to Tenerife on my own?

Absolutely! We have a lot of workers that come solo. In fact, we found that 70 percent did last year. Working in Tenerife is an amazing opportunity to meet new people and go travelling together. You can even make friends before you leave through the members-only group.

Will flights be included?

As much as we want to include flights, this is not possible right now. But the good news is that it is easy to arrange your flights. You will get a good price if you book early. We always recommend booking single flights instead of returns so that you have flexibility.

I'm coming with friends, are we ok to live in the same apartment?

Some workers come out with their friends and we do everything we can to ensure you can share accommodation. Just make sure that you have arranged the same accommodation package and your arrival time is the same. We can’t guarantee it but we are usually able to accommodate all requests.

Do I have to work if I use Ace?

We love to give you a taste of Tenerife and what it is like to work in a vibrant party resort. This means that we want to hook you up with a great job you will enjoy. Will you help me find work?

How do job trials work?

Not ALL jobs require a trial, but a lot of managers want you to complete a free job trial before offering you the position. This can seem like a daunting prospect but we can help you through it! When you are positive and enthusiastic, you can show exactly what you can do and land yourself a job.

Will I earn a good salary in Tenerife?

Most jobs in Tenerife are going to offer you a decent wage, combined with low living costs. There can be room to make money through tips and commission, so opportunities exist to make more if you want to.

Do I have to stay for the whole season?

There are a lot of workers that have fun and want to stay the whole season, but everybody is different in their circumstances. You may have commitments at home, such as a university or a full-time job to return to. The great thing is that it is totally up to you. You can book a flight for any time that suits your schedule; it is only the arrival dates that are set.

Tens of thousands protest against Canary Islands’ ‘unsustainable’ tourism model

Organisers say 50,000 turn out to call for limit on tourist numbers, saying model makes life unaffordable and puts strain on resources

Tens of thousands of people are protesting across the Canary Islands to call for an urgent rethink of the Spanish archipelago’s tourism strategy and a freeze on visitor numbers, arguing that the decades-old model has made life unaffordable and environmentally unsustainable for residents.

The protests, which are taking place under the banner “Canarias tiene un límite” – The Canaries have a limit – are backed by environmental groups including Greenpeace, WWF, Ecologists in Action, Friends of the Earth and SEO/Birdlife.

“We’ve reached the point where the balance between the use of resources and the welfare of the population here has broken down, especially over the past year,” said Víctor Martín, a spokesperson for the collective Canarias se Agota – The Canaries Have Had Enough – which helped to coordinate protests on Saturday across the eight islands.

Eleven members of Canarias se Agota have already been on hunger strike for a week to protest against the construction of two large luxury developments in southern Tenerife, which they describe as illegal and totally unnecessary.

Police said 20,000 people had turned out for the demonstrations, but organisers put the figure closer to 50,000, Spain’s TVE public television said.

“We are not against tourism,” Rosario Correo, one of the protesters, told TVE. “We’re asking that they change this model that allows for unlimited growth of tourism.”

Protesters also gathered in Madrid and Barcelona to show their support for the rallies in the Canary Islands, public television said.

Last year, 13.9 million people visited the islands, which have a population of 2.2 million. Tourism accounts for about 35% of the archipelago’s GDP – bringing in €16.9bn in 2022 alone – but local people say the industry is stressing natural resources and pricing them out of the rental market.

Figures from Spain’s National Statistics Institute show that 33.8% of people in the Canaries are at risk of poverty or social exclusion , the highest proportion for any region except Andalucía.

Martín said the regional government’s continuing focus on tourism at a time when the climate emergency was leading to cuts to water supplies made no sense. “Demand is rising in urban areas where there are more tourists,” he said. “We’ve had a very dry winter and a water emergency’s already been declared on Tenerife.

“There are going to be restrictions if there’s not more rain this month but it’s 36C here right now. This is all unsustainable and it means that we won’t even be able to keep normal levels of tourism going. And yet the authorities and the businesses here are trying to stick with this model.”

The housing situation in many parts of the archipelago was also dire because of high prices, low wages, a lack of public housing and the continuing cost of living crisis, Martín said. “I realised we’d reached the limit when I saw people who were working as hotel maids or waiters were living in shacks.

“Wages are so low that they don’t cover the basic costs of living, especially in the current crisis, which is global, but has been felt keenly in the Canaries because we have to import practically everything.”

He insisted the protest movement was not anti-tourist, pointing out that many people in the Canaries had known and liked generations of families from countries such as the UK and Germany.

“The problem isn’t the tourists,” he said. “It’s a model that was built around, and with the connivance of, a business class that doesn’t want to listen to what needs to be done, and with a political class that serves that business class instead of serving all the citizens.”

He said a complete rethink of the Canaries’ tourism model could not wait. “What we’re asking is very simple. Given that tourism is the main economic activity and the cause of all these problems, we want an immediate halt to these two mega-projects,” he said of the Tenerife developments.

“We also want a tourist moratorium that will lead to a study of the load each island can take and which will determine whether we’ve already passed the critical point. In areas where there’s an overload, we want to see a stage of degrowth of economic activity to benefit natural resources. Otherwise, you have an existing model that only benefits a very few people.”

Martín said a proper study of the problems the Canaries suffer from could have global repercussions. “This rethinking of the tourism model could put the Canaries on the map as an example of sustainable tourism development,” he said. “We could be known for something positive instead of something negative.”

Fernando Clavijo, the regional president of the Canary Islands, has said his administration is already taking action. “All the actions this government has taken have been based on a revision of this model,” he told reporters this week . “The Canaries tourist model has been a successful one, but obviously, as with anything, there are things that could be perfected.”

Over-tourism has become a major issue in many Spanish cities and regions , triggering protests and backlashes in Barcelona , and leading the authorities in Seville to consider charging visitors to explore the Andalucían city’s famous Plaza de España .

Thousands protest tourism in Tenerife saying Canary Islands are ‘exhausted’

Tens of thousands of people hit the streets in Tenerife today to protest against tourism on the island, with UK tourists among the targets of anger.

Messages in English left on walls and benches in and around Palm Mar in the southern of the island included ‘My misery your paradise’ and ‘Average salary in Canary Islands is 1,200 euros’.

In an apparent UK backlash, a response left in English on a wall next to a ‘Tourists go home’ message said: ‘F**k off, we pay your wages.’

Chanting and whistling, protesters waved placards emblazoned with slogans reading ‘The Canary Islands are not up for sale!’ and ‘Respect my home’.

The Spanish islands off the coast of North Africa are an ever-popular destination among Brits hoping to escape the cold on the mainland.

One demonstrator said: ‘It’s not a message against the tourist, but against a tourism model that doesn’t benefit this land and needs to be changed.’

Protests also took place in the other islands in the archipelago, including Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, with support demos scheduled for the Spanish mainland in cities like Malaga and Madrid as well as London and Berlin.

The Canary Islands protests were organised under the slogan ‘Canarias Tiene Un Limite’ which in English translates as ‘The Canary Islands have a limit.”

The backdrop to the demos is an ongoing hunger strike six men and women began on April 11 outside a church in the northern Tenerife town of La Laguna.

Speaking ahead of the start of today’s demonstrations, a spokesman for protest platform Canarias Se Agota, which the hunger strikers are affiliated to, said: ‘Today, April 20, marks the 10th day of the hunger strike.

‘Today we cannot forget these people who are putting their lives at risk for our Earth.

‘Their determination inspires, their bravery moves us, their sacrifice reminds us that this struggle is everyone’s and for everyone.

‘We are writing a new chapter in the history of our islands, a chapter marked by the unwavering perseverance of those who bravely defend our home.

‘Today the Canary Islands will scream and fight, and tomorrow it will continue to do so.’

Protest groups including Canarias Se Agota, which in English translates literally as ‘The Canary Islands are Exhausted’, want the authorities to paralyse two tourist projects including one which involves the construction of a five-star hotel by one of Tenerife’s last virgin beaches.

They are also seeking a commitment from regional politicians to change the tourist model and protect islands like Tenerife from the worst excesses of mass tourism, including sea pollution, traffic gridlock and lack of cheap affordable housing linked to the pushing-up of property prices because of Airbnb-style holiday lets.

Other demands include the protection of natural spaces, a tourist tax and better working conditions for hotel cleaners, who joined today’s protest in Santa Cruz as they insisted to local press: ‘We are not slaves.’

The archipelago of 2.2 million people was visited by nearly 14 million foreign tourists in 2023, up 13% from the previous year, according to official data.

Authorities in the islands are concerned about the impact on locals.

A draft law expected to pass this year toughening the rules on short lets follows complaints from residents priced out of the housing market.

Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo said on Friday he felt ‘proud’ that the region was a leading Spanish tourist destination, but acknowledged that more controls were needed as the sector continues to grow.

‘We can’t keep looking away. Otherwise, hotels will continue to open without any control,’ he told a press conference. 

In the Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, marchers carried banners in Spanish which said: ‘It’s not phobia, it’s love for my land.’

A woman protestor held up another which said: ‘Fourteen million tourists a year but 36 per cent of Canarians at risk of poverty.’

One of the other banners exhibited by protestors said: ‘The Canary Islands government is an estate agency.’

Another said: ‘With so much Airbnb where are we going to live?’

Paula Rincon told local press: ‘It pains me that Canarians cannot afford to live in their own neighbourhoods.’

Insisting the current tourism model led to ‘more people paying lower prices and badly-built hotels that destroyed beaches and protected areas’ she added: ‘I don’t know why we aspire to so many numbers when this doesn’t filter down to the rest of the population.

‘The current system doesn’t benefit us, it impoverishes us.’

The protests in the Canary Islands are mostly taking place away from the main tourist areas, which in Tenerife and Gran Canaria are in the south of the islands.

Some British holidaymakers have shown their support for the issues raised by the islanders but others have accused them of biting the hand that feeds them.

The Canary Islands’ tourism minister Jessica de Leon urged British holidaymakers not to cancel their holidays ahead of today’s demos.

Canary Islands regional president Fernando Clavijo initially admitted he was worried tourists might be put off coming to the area, before softening his message last week and describing the April 20 protests as an opportunity to ‘revise’ the current tourism model.

Jorge Marichal, president of regional hotel association ASHOTEL, has claimed tourists were ringing establishments to ask whether it was safe to come.

He has also insisted ‘non-regulated’ holiday lets are a big problem and the reason there is less control than there should be on the numbers of tourists in places like Tenerife.

Protest platform Canarias Se Agota has insisted it has nothing to do with the graffiti that has appeared in parts of Tenerife over recent weeks – and has accused regional politicians of blaming them of tourism-phobia as part of a ‘dirty tricks’ campaign.

BRITS could be hit with new taxes and strict visitor limits in Tenerife after locals demanded a freeze on holidaymakers in mass anti-tourism protests.

The Canary Islands may soon adopt measures to regulate the number of visitors - and charge tourists a daily cost for visiting the archipelago.

Politicians are under immense pressure after tens of thousands of angry residents took to the streets to rage against the tourism industry in the country.

And now Rosa Dávila, the first female president of Tenerife, proposed a new tourism model that would charge visitors a fee to access natural spaces.

She is also advocating measures to "modulate" the number of tourists arriving in Tenerife - and "study the impact of demographic growth.

She said after the mass protests: "We must analyze the exceptionalities that can be applied in a territory as fragile and limited as ours. What is clear is that Tenerife cannot be a theme park.

"Those who visit us have to value and respect our natural and cultural wealth, our resources, and they have to be clear about the rules for their preservation.

"In addition, there have to be limits to prevent tourism from overflowing."

President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, previously warned that a daily cost for visitors could be on the table .

While not included in current plans, Clavijo said the government is willing to look at suggestions of a three euro per night charge.

He said last Friday: "It is true that the ecotax is not included in the government program, but it is also true that we are willing to discuss it; the government will always engage in dialogue."

An angry anti-tourist movement has been gaining momentum throughout the popular holiday hotspot islands in recent months.

Residents of the largest Canary Island seem to be at war with UK holidaymakers as they blast visitors with anti-tourism graffiti and emerging local campaigns.

On Saturday, thousands of people took to the streets today in Tenerife to demand restrictions on holidaymakers after telling Brits to "go home".

The anti-tourist hordes filled a square in the capital brandishing banners including some that read “You enjoy we suffer” in English.

More than 15,000 people waved Canary Islands’ flags and blew horns to make a deafening noise in the capital Santa Cruz.

Protests also took place at the same time in other popular Canary Islands including Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

Banners at the mass protest today read: “Where is the money from tourism?” and "‘Tourist moratorium now.”

The marches were organised under the slogan "The Canary Islands have a limit.”

Anti-tourist protestors want the authorities to paralyse two projects including one which involves the construction of a five-star hotel by one of Tenerife’s last virgin beaches.

They are also looking for more protection from mass tourism - to help with the local environment, traffic and housing issues.

Other demands include the protection of natural spaces, a tourist tax and better working conditions for hotel cleaners, who joined today’s protest in Santa Cruz as they insisted to the local press: “We are not slaves.”

Organisers claim the march hit up to 50,000 participators yesterday.

Why are locals in Tenerife turning up against Brits?

RESIDENTS of the largest Canary Island seem to be at war with UK holidaymakers as they blast visitors with anti-tourism graffiti and emerging local campaigns.

Locals have been fuming that they are "fed-up" with "low quality" Brit tourists who only come for the  cheap beer, burgers and sunbathing .

Now, they are demanding a tourist tax, fewer flights to the island and a clampdown on foreigners buying houses.

Some protesters are claiming that their anger is directed at the government rather than tourists as they ask for change.

They claim that AirBnBs and other holiday rentals are driving up the cost of living and that they are sick of the noise, traffic and rubbish that accompany the avalanche of vacationers that visit every year.

Jaime Coello, president of the Telesforo Bravo Foundation, said: "The quality of the tourist product is being destroyed by the investors and the regional government."

Waves of  anti-tourist graffiti that has been sprayed across the island  to tell Brits they are not welcome.

Bitter messages outside tourism hotspots read "your paradise, our misery" and "tourists go home".

"Locals are forced to move out and YOU are responsible for that," said a furious printed sign.

Another read: "Tourists go home!"

The brewing chaos coupled with hatred for visitors is now scaring Brit tourists to go on a vacation in Tenerife.

And Jorge Marichal, a hotel chain boss in Tenerife, revealed that  Brits were ringing up out of fear they would not be safe on their holidays to the island .

He said: "One of the problems I am facing is that clients are beginning to call and ask what’s happening here and whether it’s safe."

While the hotel owner said he understands the pain of local people, he added that being "anti-tourist" is not the way to go in.

Expats fight back

Many expats and tourists have fought back by arguing the anti-tourism war is wrong and misguided .

One the response left in English on a wall next to a "Tourists go home" message said: "F**k off, we pay your wages."

Melissa Taylor, 47, who runs an English pub in Las Playas de las Americas told The Mail that the anti-tourism stuff was "unfair" as without tourism there would be "nothing here".

She added: "Brits come here and spend a lot of money, the overwhelming majority of our customers are from the UK."

And Irish expat Bronagh Maheor, 23, also slammed the locals protests as "totally unfair", stating that without tourists "there would not be hotels or businesses.

"I'd be out of a job, we need them," he argued.

Some British holidaymakers have shown their support for the issues raised by the islanders but others have accused them of biting the hand that feeds them.

The Canary Islands Tourism Board has also denied there has been an influx of tourists and claimed figures are the same with pre-pandemic levels.

A spokesperson for the Board told the  Mirror  that the influx of tourists is stable throughout the year.

BRITS have been warned to stay away from one of their favourite holiday hotspots as the island needs "higher quality" tourists.

The caution comes after tens of thousands of locals gathered to protest tourism in their home, declaring they "have a limit".

Politician Carlos Tarife, the deputy mayor for Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, said the island wants to move away from "all-inclusive" tourism and wristband-wearing holidaymakers.

He urged travellers who want to stay in their hotel while on holiday to go elsewhere, telling Radio Marca Tenerife: "Where before there were hotels with 250 beds, today we are in hotels with fewer beds and higher quality.

"I think that's the tourism we need in our land, not the wristband and 'all-inclusive' kind of tourism of 'I stay inside the hotel and do everything inside the hotel'.

"That's why there are other destinations," local outlet El Dia reports.

The politician added that Santa Cruz would like to be known as a place with five-star luxury hotels where tourists "not only come to enjoy some facilities, but also come to eat our local product".

His comments came after Brits were warned that they might be charged a daily "tourist tax" to visit the Canary Islands.

Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo raised the possibility as tens of thousands of angry locals - up to 80,000, according to protest organisers - took to the streets in Tenerife to rage against the tourism industry and urge Brits to "go home".

Protesters filled a square in Santa Cruz, blowing horns, waving Canary Islands flags, and brandishing banners reading: "You enjoy we suffer."

Bitter messages - including "your paradise, our misery" - have been plastered all over the tourism hotspot for months.

Tenerife residents said they were "fed up" of "low quality" Brit tourists who only visit to indulge in cheap beer, burgers, and sunbathing .

Some Brit holidaymakers called their hotels on the island for confirmation that they would be safe on their holidays .

Mr Tarife, who is the head of public services and the environment for Santa Cruz Council as well as deputy mayor, emphasised on Tuesday that he was against a tourist moratorium - but also that the Islands need to try and attract a different demographic of tourist.

A Tenerife politician has urged Irish tourists looking for cheap all-inclusive sunshine breaks to go elsewhere for their vacations.

Carlos Tarife, deputy mayor for the island capital Santa Cruz, said holidaymakers interested in staying in their hotels with their mandatory wristbands on should book places like the Dominican Republic instead.

He made his extraordinary comments just three days after thousands of Canary Islanders took to the streets of the Atlantic archipelago to protest against the problems caused by mass tourism and demand their politicians take action.

Government officials in Tenerife, where protestors held up banners which said: ‘You enjoy we suffer’ and ‘Tourism moratorium now’, said around 30,000 people had taken part, but organisers put the figure at 80,000.

In an interview on a Tenerife radio station on Tuesday, Mr Tarife who is also Head of Public Services and the Environment for Santa Cruz Council, said when explaining why he was against a tourist moratorium: “In the Canary Islands we have less hotel beds today than five or six years ago.

“That’s got to do amongst other things with the fact that in the Canaries, and I’m referring especially to Tenerife and southern Tenerife in particular, a model of four-star hotels is changing to one of five-star and five-star plus hotels.

“Where there were hotels with 250 beds, there’s now hotels with less beds but greater quality.

“I think that is the type of tourism we need here, not the type of tourism with all-inclusive wristbands where holidaymakers stay inside the hotel and do everything in the hotel.

“For that I think there are destinations like the Dominican Republic and other places."

He went on to tell Radio Marca Tenerife: “I think we have to have five-star hotels and five-star plus hotels where tourists don’t just come to enjoy the facilities there but where they come to enjoy our local products such as the famous Canarian potatoes, that’s what should interest us."

Mr Tarife caused controversy last year after being pictured with a latex penis during a visit to a sex shop in a Tenerife shopping centre ahead of municipal and regional elections.

The right-wing politician responded to critics of the photo showing him posing with the giant phallus and two shop assistants holding up his election leaflets by telling them to “be happier” and saying: “I bring out affection in people who naturally freely publish a photo on their social media, even if some turn it into a controversy.”

Last week Spanish opera singer Ainhoa Arteta claimed Britain’s favourite holiday destination attracts too many “flip-flop”-wearing tourists.

The four-times-married soprano said the Spanish government should be doing more to attract holidaymakers seeking a cultural experience.

The Basque-born 59-year-old, who first performed in London in 1999 with Placido Domingo, voiced her concern in an interview ahead of the Canary Island protests last Saturday, which were backed by campaigners who organised smaller support events in cities including London, Berlin and Malaga.

Arteta, whose husbands have included American baritone Dwayne Croft, touched on the type of tourism Spain attracts after being asked whether opera in her homeland is in a healthy state.

She told Majorcan daily Diario de Mallorca in an interview: “Not at all. Spain is a cainite country, it’s not a country that helps its singers and musicians.

“And it’s a shame because we have truly talented singers.

“If this country exploited its cultural-historical patrimony and accompanied it in all our theatres and auditoriums with ambitious programmes, we would attract cultural and not flip-flop tourism.”

She added, in a clear reference to Barcelona and Madrid: “The Ministry of Tourism and Culture should act together and we should be conscious there’s culture around the country, not just in two cities.”
