Best Tour on Raitea!

This was my 5th visit to beautiful Raitiea and my first time touring with Trucky Tours and it was the most complete and fun tour I’ve ever taken. My travel friends and I all give this tour 5 stars! We saw a bit of everything - The coast, the inland farms, a Pearl farm, the unesco designated marea, and a vanilla plantation and much more! The best part by far was meeting and getting to know our wonderful guide, who made it fun and informative! Pickup and drop off were easy and the vehicle was immaculate. All around excellent day in French Polynesia!

We were part of a group of 22 which traveled comfortably in the Trucky bus. Tara, our guide and Tamarere, our driver made the ride so much fun. They provided a wonderful cultural overview of this beautiful island with visits to a local pearl and vanilla farm and the Marae of Taputapuatea, a world heritage site and the heart of the Polynesian civilization. As we traveled through Hawaii and French Polynesia, we really came to appreciate the significance of this site. We ended with sampling a variety of delicious local fruits and coconut . I highly recommend this tour.

I had the good fortune of having contact with Christian, the French Owner of Trucky Tours a few years ago. This past month I organized two different days, with their 22 passenger nice bus, and 2 additional 6 passenger vans for myself and cruise passengers. Christian is quick to respond to emails and also very happy to please. I believe most, if not all, enjoyed their time while on a shore excursion in Raiatea. We were met immediately at the dock and we got going very quickly. The bus is very comfortable and in great shape....did I tell you it is pink :-) His drivers and guides are amazing as well. We had Tara and Tamarere. Tara is VERY personable and perfect as a tour guide. We visited a pearl farm and informed about the pearl process. We also went to a small vanilla plantation and too given a brief history. Also went to Taputapuatea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. They also treated us to a nice tasting of some cool and refreshing fruit and water. All was good for such a great price. We were returned back to the ship after a four hour excursion. Very interesting tour with our guides Tara and Tamarere. We had a wonderful time and saw many interesting cultural sites, Pearl farm and vanilla farm.

So glad we visited Ra'iatea with Trucky Tours during our honeymoon...the only thing we regretted was not staying there longer! Tara, who as we soon realized is not just a gracious host but also a community leader and something of a local celebrity, picked us up in a comfortable vehicle from the airport for a wonderful journey: from the pearl farm to the botanical gardens, to a drive through the valleys, to the marae at Taputapuatea, to a fresh homemade lunch with vegetarian options at a scenic seaside spot. We were so grateful for the opportunity to learn more about this beautiful country's history and culture from her, and absolutely loved how personal and tailored the tour was to our interests. Don't miss this when you visit French Polynesia!

I arranged the tour with Christian months in advance. As our group grew to 30, he accommodated us in 2 comfortable vans. He was very easy to work with and responded quickly to my questions. We visited a black pearl producer and the owner showed us how a pearl is cultivated. We also visited a small vanilla bean grower who also showed us how the plants are manually pollinated. They guided us through the Taputapuatea Unesco site and showed us how they used the various local plants as well as providing us with an interesting history of the site and how it still impacts their culture today. We really enjoyed the break with the bottled water, fresh pineapple, mango, & papaya as it is so much tastier than what we get back home.

HOUSTON (AP) — Time marches on and all good things must come to an end. But don’t tell that to The Rolling Stones .

What many believe to be the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon as they kicked off their latest tour Sunday night at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

The Stones have been touring for more than 60 years. Frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, with guitarist Ronnie Wood not far behind at 76. Their tour is being sponsored in part by AARP.

But during a vibrant two-hour show, the Stones played with the energy of band that was on tour for the first time.

“It’s great to be back in the Lone Star State,” Jagger told the packed stadium, filled with longtime fans, many wearing faded concert shirts from previous tours.

Jagger often strutted up and down the stage with seemingly boundless energy while Richards and Wood played many familiar guitar riffs beloved by fans. Jagger often led the audience in sing-alongs.

“The energy level is up and it’s always up with them. The age doesn’t show,” Dale Skjerseth, the Stones’ production director, said Friday before the concert.

The Stones have hit the road to support the release of their latest album, “Hackney Diamonds,” the band’s first record of original music since 2005.

Houston was the first stop on the band’s 16-city tour across the U.S. and Canada. Other cities on the tour include New Orleans, Philadelphia and Vancouver, British Columbia. The tour ends on July 17 in Santa Clara, California.

During Sunday’s 18-song concert set list, the Stones played several tracks off the new record, including lead single “Angry.” They also played classics including “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Gimme Shelter,” Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up.”

After playing “Beast of Burden,” Jagger said that concertgoers in Houston had voted to include it on the set list.

“You can’t go wrong with that,” one man in the audience could be heard screaming.

The Stones also played some unexpected choices, including “Rocks Off,” from their 1972 double album “Exile on Main St.” and “Out of Time,” a 1966 song that Jagger said during the concert had not ever been played by the band in the U.S.

With the 2021 death of drummer Charlie Watts , the Stones are now comprised of the core trio of Jagger, Richards and Wood. On Sunday, they were backed by various musicians including two keyboardists, a new drummer, backup singers and a brass section.

While the stage was surrounded by a large collection of video screens projecting images throughout the show, the main focus of the concert was the band and their songs

Before Sunday’s concert, Jagger spent time on Friday touring NASA’s Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston, posting photos on his Instagram account of him with astronauts inside Mission Control.

“I had an amazing trip to the space center,” Jagger said.

When asked if the band might be thinking about retiring, Skjerseth said he doubts that will happen.

“This is not the end. They’re very enthused,” he said.

World’s first hydrogen station for commercial trucks opens – is it too late.

FirstElement Fuels has opened the world’s first large-scale hydrogen fueling station for heavy-duty commercial trucks just outside the Port of Oakland.

FirstElement is calling their new filling station, which opened to the public this week for tours and demonstrations, the first of its kind. Located near the Port of Oakland, the company claims its hydrogen pumps can “fill” a truck’s hydrogen tanks in as little as ten minutes, which works out (in their math) to as many as 200 trucks per day.

As for customers, the company says there are 30 Hyundai Xcient semi trucks using the fueling station currently, as well as a number of Nikola hydrogen fuel-cell-powered trucks .

A ceremony to mark the station’s opening was held Tuesday, and was attended by state officials including Liane Randolph, chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Tyson Eckerle, clean transportation advisor for Gov. Gavin Newsom’s business development office. Primary funding for the Oakland station was provided by CARB and the California Energy Commission.

Eckerle notes that the US federal government is handing out $8 billion to jump-start what it calls the “hydrogen economy,” and expects sufficient funding to build up to 60 more hydrogen truck stations like this one in California – which would, theoretically, be enough to serve 5,000 trucks and 1,000 buses .

All well and good, but …

What if it’s already too late for hydrogen?

MAN Trucks CEO, Alexander Vlaskamp, said it best when he said that it was “ impossible ” for hydrogen to effectively compete with BEVs.

He’s right – on a level playing field, there is absolutely no reason to believe hydrogen has any kind of future . But we don’t operate on a level playing field, and comments like Eckerle’s, along with an $8 billion federal budget and a number of supposedly genuine industry experts touting its usefulness as a fuel , mean we have to take hydrogen seriously (at least, for now).

Even so, it seems like the tide of public opinion is already starting to turn against hydrogen. Outlets that may never have questioned a manufacturer’s claims about a hydrogen-fueled vehicle a few years ago now seem more than willing to call those claims out. Here’s just one example:

Producing hydrogen itself can be very dirty. Most hydrogen produced today requires methane, which is a fossil fuel and a strong greenhouse gas contributor. The industry is working on production alternatives, including carbon capture and storage from the burning of methane, or quitting methane altogether to make green hydrogen, using an electrolyzer to split water’s hydrogen and oxygen. Both alternatives are prohibitively expensive without government subsidies. RUSS MITCHELL, AOL/Los Angeles TIMES .

So far, it’s not clear that FirstElement’s claims about either the sustainability of its hydrogen or the practicality of its filling station will convince many battery electric absolutists.

Take the company’s hydrogen production process as an example. FirstElement says that its supplier, Air Liquide in Las Vegas, uses natural gas as “feedstock” for its hydrogen. It buys biogas to blend with natural gas in order to create hydrogen – and that, because the gas used is more than 60% renewable, the hydrogen qualifies as “green.”

Additionally, the claim of 10 minute fast fills should come with an asterisk or two . That’s because FirstGreen is using new “cryopump” technology from Bosch Rexroth to allow for filling at 900 bar (15,000 psi). While that seems like more enough to push 100 kg into a tank in about ten minutes, cryogenically cooling hydrogen is an energy intensive technology that requires a lot of electricity to function properly. Electricity that it says will come from the stored hydrogen.

In fairness, however, Bosch has some ideas here to help station owners maximize the usefulness of all that electricity.

“Cold is like gold,” says Dave Hull, regional vice-president, Bosch Rexroth. “You’ve got all this cold energy. All my career I worked to get rid of heat. You can take that energy and run a whole station’s refrigerators for Rock Star energy drinks, or air conditioning. Bosh has a whole division of heat pumps and building technologies.”

Whether or not that added efficiency adds up to actual energy and cost savings, rather than a lifeline for the gas industry and tier 1 auto suppliers like Bosch however, remains to be seen. Meanwhile, hydrogen costs continue to rise.

Platts last assessed California’s retail hydrogen price at $33.48/kg Jan. 4, 2023, which is the weighted average hydrogen price offered at retail fueling stations across the state. The price has risen 112% from when Platts began the assessment in September 2021, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights data. SP GLOBAL

Despite the high cost of hydrogen ( “green” hydrogen is more expensive, still ), Shane Stephens, one of FirstElement’s founders and its chief development officer, remains undeterred.

Here's the problem with hydrogen - before you get to all the problems (energy losses) with transportation and storage.

It takes 50kWh of electricity (hopefully green sourced) to make 1 kg of H2 from electrolysis.

1 kg of H2 will power a Mirai for about 50-60 miles.

50 kWh of electricity will power my Model 3 for over 200 miles.

That's the bottom line before you get to all the other problems, challenges and inefficiencies of hydrogen. I can see use cases for hydrogen, but powering something on our roads isn't it.

“We, at FirstElement Fuels, have a lot of confidence the market is coming,” says Stephens. “We see the regulations on the horizon, the OEMs and fleet owners are going to have to respond to that, especially when it comes to goods movement, and hydrogen and fuel cells are the best – if not only – solution that will work for many of those use cases.”

Electrek’s Take

As a light vehicle fuel – despite the efforts of Hyundai , Toyota, and (more recently) Honda – things aren’t going well for hydrogen. As a fuel for massive semi trucks and even bigger heavy equipment, however, it might stand a chance against current battery technology.

But battery tech isn’t stagnant, and lighter, better, faster charging battery news that used to come every year, and then every month , now seems to be coming every week – and I’d argue that you’d be foolish to assume batteries that are twice as energy dense at half the weight won’t be here well ahead of California’s 2035 ICE ban.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Tesla Announces Cybertruck Tour In Europe

(RTTNews) - Tesla Inc. (TSLA) has announced its plans to take the Cybertruck global tour to Europe, with the electric pickup truck set to visit 24 different cities across the continent.

Tesla's European and Middle Eastern division shared a teaser video on Sunday, which revealed the Cyber Odyssey tour's itinerary, including stops in various cities in Germany, Italy, Spain, England, and more. This tour follows previous Cybertruck showcases in China, Japan, Thailand, and at the Tesla Gigafactory near Berlin, Germany.

The latest announcement from the company comes after months of speculation about Tesla's plans to bring the Cybertruck to Europe. However, the feasibility of introducing it to these markets remains uncertain due to varying regulations concerning passenger safety standards across different countries. Tesla Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy has raised concerns about the Cybertruck's compliance with pedestrian safety standards in several European countries, citing the protrusions of the truck's stainless steel as a potential obstacle to selling the vehicle in Europe.

Despite these concerns, Tesla has outlined a range of new features that will soon be available for the Cybertruck, including a dedicated Baja Mode, locking differentials, and a CyberTent mode. The announcement of these upcoming features was made on the official account of the all-electric pickup truck, with Tesla indicating that the features will be rolled out shortly. Tesla Cybertruck Lead Engineer Wes Morrill mentioned that the update with the new features is currently being installed on Wave 1 vehicles.
