A Complete Guide to Rangiroa, French Polynesia

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

Language and Culture

Things to do, where to stay, where to eat, getting there, getting around.

Endless skies, azure lagoons, white sand beaches, and coconut palms swaying in the trade winds—it’s a picture postcard ideal, and it can be found in the South Pacific on Rangiroa, in French Polynesia. Rangiroa means “endless sky” in Tuamotuan, a language closely related to Tahitian. It’s also the largest settlement in the Tuamotus, one of the five island groups of French Polynesia.

In addition to diving, visitors come here for sunny weather; laid-back, intimate resorts; and a feeling of true escape, surrounded by nothing by miles upon miles of ocean.

Rangiroa is one of the largest coral atolls in the world. Atolls are remains of volcanic islands that have sunk back into the ocean under their own weight after millions of years, leaving behind only the reef. Inside the ring of the atoll, the ocean transforms into a placid lagoon with clear waters that are a haven for marine life.

Although the atoll is large (the island of Tahiti can fit entirely inside the lagoon), tourism activities and accommodations are concentrated in the settlement of Avatoru in its northwest corner. The islet Avatoru is situated on is roughly 6 miles from end to end. Visitors can see other points of interest on Rangiroa via guided boat tours.

French is the official language of French Polynesia. As in the rest of the territory, most customer-facing tourism workers on Rangiroa have conversational English.

However, basic French can be an asset, particularly away from accommodations. Understanding greetings and numbers in French would be most helpful items to travelers. As in France, it’s polite to say or return a “Bonjour” (or "Ia Ora na” in Tahitian) upon entering a shop or approaching a counter to order food or beverage.

Tahitian and its related dialect Tuamotuan are also spoken among island residents.

Rangiroa’s endless sky is often best enjoyed by zoning out in a hammock or beach lounger and listening to the gentle sounds of the sea and sand. It’s important to note that Avatoru does not abound in wide, sandy beaches—sand seekers should take excursions to visit beaches elsewhere on the atoll.

Visit the Blue Lagoon

One of the most popular day excursions is a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon, which you can book through one of several operators. It’s an hour-long ride across the lagoon to the western side of the atoll (there’s almost no surf or swells on the lagoon, so seasickness is unlikely). There, a rough circle of small islands surrounds the small lagoon and its almost impossibly bright blue hues.

Docile black tip sharks are the welcoming committee as visitors wade ashore from their boats for a day of picnicking and snorkeling in and around the lagoon. There are often several additional stops just off the islets for reef snorkeling among the sharks (which are notably shy or uninterested in humans) and other marine life.

Following similar itineraries are trips to Reef Island—where petrified reef skeletons rise out of the lagoon like abstract sculptures—or the utterly Instagrammable Pink Sand Beach.

Go Scuba Diving

Diving is a popular activity, and there are several dive shops to choose from, both at the resorts and off-site. Several of the dives on Rangiroa—notably the drift dive at Tiputa Pass—are on many “Best Of” lists. The dive centers can also provide PADI training and certifications for new divers.

Shop for Pearls

In Avatoru, Pearl-seeking visitors can visit a handful of small pearl shops alongside the road or at their resort. Or, they can call Gauguin’s Pearl for a pickup from their accommodation in an air-conditioned van. The pearl farm and attached pearl shop offer grafting demonstrations three times a day, as well as a short tour to see pearl grafting in progress right next to the lagoon.

Wine drinkers are in for a special treat here—the only wine made from grapes grown on coral terrain is produced on Rangiroa. Hour-long cellar tours and tastings at Vin de Tahiti (which also include local rum) are available six evenings a week; reservations are recommended.

There are two hotels in Avatoru, plus a handful of Tahitian guesthouses called pensions. Pensions are operated within or adjacent to private homes; one major difference between pensions and hotels on Rangiroa is the water source. Pensions, like most private homes on Rangiroa, rely solely on rainwater catchment for fresh water, while the hotels operate their own plants that remove salt from the seawater to render it potable.

Hotel Kia Ora

The island’s only luxury hotel, Hotel Kia Ora is situated in the middle of a coconut grove nestled right on the lagoon. The hotel has a variety of accommodation options, including villas with private plunge pools, beach or overwater bungalows, and the unique two-story “duplex” villa, designed for families. The hotel also has an overwater bar with sunset views, and a poolside fine dining restaurant that hosts a weekly Polynesian buffet and show.

Maitai Rangiroa

More moderate, but still solidly three star, is the Maitai Rangiroa. Guests here can choose between a bungalow with a garden or ocean view (note that there's not much beach to speak of). There is also a restaurant and bar with luscious views of the lagoon, as well as an oceanfront infinity pool. Maitai is somewhat more centrally located to the town of Avatoru.

Aside from wine grapes and coconuts, very little other produce grows well on the coral, so virtually all food is imported from Tahiti. Found primarily in the hotels, restaurants offer French cuisine with a focus on local seafood, plus international options such as pasta and pizza. Of course, the island’s coral wine is on offer as an accompaniment.

Outside the hotels, there are a handful of stores, and many of these will have a selection of takeaway sandwiches (generally ham or tuna) or packaged meals. Outside the hotels, restaurants around the island mainly serve French or Chinese cuisine. There are also a handful of “Snacks” (short for Snack Bar) and roulottes (food trucks) in Avatoru.

Visitors who are staying at a pension with meals included should let their host know no later than breakfast the same morning if they play to dine out in the evening.

To get to Rangiroa from the U.S., you will need to connect in Tahiti. The island is eight hours from Los Angeles or San Francisco, the two U.S. mainland gateways with nonstop service to Tahiti.

Air Tahiti , the domestic airline of French Polynesia, offers multiple daily flights between Tahiti and Rangiroa. Many flights operate nonstop between the two islands; travel time is one hour.

While daily service is available from Tahiti, travelers planning to arrive directly from other popular destinations such as Bora Bora, Fakarava, or Tikehau should check with Air Tahiti to learn which days of the week nonstop flights to Rangiroa are available from their point of origin.

There are a handful of car rental operators on Rangiroa with offices at the airport, but rates can be steep. The resorts offer rentals on an hourly basis, which can be a better value. An hour is more than enough time to slowly drive to each end of Avatoru.

Most attractions and tours offer pickup at accommodations; for those that don’t, resort concierges or pension hosts can arrange a taxi.

Both resorts and most pensions have bicycles available to borrow or rent.

Money Matters

  • The French Pacific Franc (CFP, colloquially referred to as the Franc) is the currency of French Polynesia. The value is pegged to the Euro.
  • Tipping is uncommon in French Polynesia. Tour guides seem to be an exception, although even they don’t generally expect gratuities.
  • Credit and debit cards are becoming more widely accepted, but cash is still in wider use on Rangiroa, particularly for small purchases in stores. Many family- or individually-run tour operators are also cash-only; most will be happy to stop at an ATM at the beginning or end of the tour.
  • There’s an ATM conveniently located across the parking lot from the airport terminal. It can also be a good idea to bring some cash from Tahiti (there’s an ATM at Faa’a International Airport for those making direct connections).
  • Bargaining the sales price of an item is not customary, except for Tahitian Pearls. In that case, it's not uncommon to politely ask—once—for a discount, particularly on multiple item purchases.

The Endless Lagoon

Rangiroa is quite possibly the world's most immense natural aquarium. Blessed with an accessible yet secluded appeal and a large abundant lagoon, this renowned destination should be at the top of every eager diver's list.

Here on this secluded coral atoll, there are no soaring mountain peaks or sweeping fragrant valleys characteristic of the other Tahitian islands. Instead, flattened islets and skinny sandbars encircle the perimeter of Rangiroa's vast blue lagoon. This atoll formation allows you the unique opportunity to enjoy endless horizons on either side. Fittingly, Rangiroa actually means "immense sky" in the local language.

Rangiroa is the largest of the Tuamotu Atolls and the second largest in the world. Home to the greatest population in this remote region, it receives frequent air service from Tahiti. Flight time from Papeete or Bora Bora is approximately one hour. Made of mostly water, the lagoon in Rangiroa is so substantial that the entire island of Tahiti could fit inside. This size, coupled with the lagoon's sheer abundance of marine life, has earned Rangiroa her reputation as a superb diving locale.

Final Impression

Rangiroa can provide an appealing contrast to the other more frequented islands in French Polynesia. Whether she draws you in with her world-class diving reputation or the chance to relax in complete isolation, you can successfully achieve both in perfect harmony.

rangiroa day trips

If adventure sports are not your forte, you can still enjoy an afternoon cruising the lagoon and visiting a number of secluded motu (islets) in Rangiroa. Spend the day at Les Sables Roses ,"The Pink Sands," a phenomenal deserted beach laden with pink sand at the eastern corner; or visit the Ile aux Récifs , "Reef Island," where erosion has created impressively sharp, jutting coral formations on the south side of the atoll. On the mainland, pay a visit to the nearby village and discover coral churches, quaint local restaurants and tiny roadside shops.

Entirely unique to the destination is the fact that Rangiroa has its own vineyard and winery. Located in the main village of Avatoru, the Dominique Auroy Winery produces French Polynesia's only wine label, Vin de Tahiti. The small vineyard, known as Domaine Ampélidacées, is situated on a separate islet where the grapes are grown on a remote coconut plantation. It is the only winery in the world where the grapes are transferred by boat during harvest twice a year. Particularly known for their whites and rosés, we recommend trying one of the four varieties during your stay.

Three days in Rangiroa

Home » Itinerary suggestions » Escape to Rangiroa

Rangiroa is known as the ‘vast sky’. Whether you’re a scuba diving enthusiast or not, the biggest atoll in The Islands of Tahiti has plenty of treasures for you to discover both at sea and on land. Here’s a suggested itinerary for a three day visit. Consider it a taster, because you’re sure to want to come again!

Rangiroa , or Ra’iroa in the language of the Tuamotu Islands , means ‘vast sky’ and you’ll understand why when you see the size of its lagoon – you could fit the island of Tahiti inside! World renowned for diving, there are plenty of activities to try and sights to see on land as well.

Life beneath the waves

Many visitors come to Rangiroa just to go diving in its world renowned dive sites. There are many dive centers proposing a large choice for divers of all levels. You’ll encounter tiger, gray, hammerhead and whitetip sharks , manta rays, sea turtles, dolphins and a host of other marine species, including multitudes of colorful tropical fish.

For those who don’t like scuba diving, the waters of Rangiroa are ideal for snorkeling. Gliding on the incoming current at Tiputa pass is like swimming in an aquarium. If you don’t want to get wet, you can also enjoy the spectacle in a glass -bottom boat.

A little R & R

Close to Tiputa pass on the quayside at Ohotu, you’ll find Chez Lili. Take a seat under the wooden pavillion next the water’s edge, and give your taste buds a treat. The good humor and vitality of your hostess, the delicious food influenced by her origins in the Indian Ocean, and the superb view, make this the perfect choice for a long lunch and a little recuperation from the morning’s efforts.

Fishing or surfing?

Unsurprisingly, the diet of the islanders of Rangiroa is mostly fish, and they are experts at catching it. Embark on a fishing boat for an afternoon’s deep sea fishing with rod and line. If you’d rather go surfing , the hosts of your Tahitian Guesthouse will be able to point you in the direction of the best spots, such as Avatoru, the site of an annual surf and bodyboard competition.

Dolphins at sunset

At the end of the afternoon, return to the quayside opposite Tiputa pass. As the sun goes down, the dolphins come out to play in the waves, and you can watch this moving spectacle from dry land. A fairytale ballet that you’ll want to enjoy each evening of your stay in this remarkable atoll.

A bike ride round the atoll

As a break from the lagoon, rent a bike, or e-bike and go for a tour round the atoll. Starting in the village of Avatoru ride as far as the second canal at Tiputa pass. The villages along the way are simple, and the villagers friendly and welcoming. Feel free to stop for a chat whenever you wish. It’s a peaceful island, so enjoy the pleasures of cycing and admire the views over the lagoon and the ocean. From time to time you can refresh yourself with a dip in the crystal clear cool water of a hoa , (little pass).

Visit to a pearl farm

A visit to a pearl farm is an educational experience and the Tuamotu Islands are the home of the Tahitian pearl. Ride to Gauguin’s Pearl Farm, which is one of the biggest black pearl producers in the Pacific. You can’t miss it, right in the heart of Avatoru motu . The price of pearls is naturally much lower when you buy them directly from the producer.

A little wine tasting

Surprising as it may seem, there is a vineyard in Rangiroa! The Domaine de Dominique Auroy is not only unique in French Polynesia, it is also the only winery on a motu in the world. The coral soil gives the white and rosé wines a distinct, refreshing flavor. The Cave de Rangiroa welcomes visitorsall year round to taste the wines and rum!

Visit to Reef Island

The size of Rangiroa atoll is grandiose, even by the standards of the Tuamotu Islands. There are 240 motu, most of which are uninhabited except for a few copra farmers andseashell collectors. Take an excursion to visit some of these idyllic islets with pristine white (or pink ), sandy beaches and warm clear sea.

Our recommendation this time is the ‘ île aux recif s’ (reef island). Located in the south of the atoll, it takes about an hour by boat to get to this strangely lunar landscape. The coral reef, emerges up to 2 meters from the water. You’ll need adequate footwear, such as plastic sandals, to explore the jagged coral, where you’ll find warm clear pools to bathe in. Lunch will be typically Polynesian with animation supplied by local musicians.

Rangiroa beach paradise © Michael Runkel

The blue lagoon

As an alternative, take an excursion to the blue lagoon. Situated about an hour from the main village, five motu surround a mini sea of about 2 acres on the coral reef, making a lagoon inside the lagoon. A real picture postcard setting with inoffensive blacktip sharks swimming in the distance. The excursion is for the whole day and a picnic lunch is included.

Rangiroa Island: 8 things you don’t want to miss

Last update : 04/19/2024

Our blog continues to grow thanks to you, our readers. This blog may contain affiliate links, which means we can earn a small commission if you make a purchase through them, at no extra cost to you. This helps us to continue to bring you more and support our work !

Do I really need to introduce you to the island of Rangiroa, which is probably even better known than Fakarava ? This mythical and breathtaking place, lost at the end of the world, is renowned for hosting “some of the most beautiful scuba diving (snorkeling) spots in the world”. These are the words of Commander Cousteau who spoke then of an incredible richness, an amazing marine life (marine fauna and flora), a true natural aquarium. I am talking about Rangiroa Island, which is not correct, because it is actually an atoll.

I have been living in French Polynesia for 4 years now at the time of writing this article, and I have had the opportunity to discover many islands and atolls in French Polynesia on a professional and personal level. Rangiroa is one of those places that I was able to visit as an individual in early 2018 during an extended weekend. Located only an hour by plane from Tahiti Island (Papeete), the journey to this enchanting place is really easy.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to do and see all the points mentioned in the article, but I hope to go back there at the beginning of the year to see the hammerhead sharks (which I missed this year). Here are, in my opinion, the 8 things not to be missed if you are going to spend a few days there. At the end of the article, you will find all the information you need to know for a trip to French Polynesia on the atoll. If you want to visit another atoll, this is the Tikehau atoll .

Rangiroa Atoll: a paradise on earth in the middle of the Pacific Ocean

atoll of rangiroa

I always find it interesting to know a little more about the place your going to, don’t you think? Maybe it’s a professional thing (I’m a geographer/geologist by training), but it seems nice to know some information about the atoll:

  • Rangiroa is located about 1 hour north of Tahiti Island,
  • This coral atoll is part of the Tuamotu archipelago, composed of more than 75 atolls,
  • The others archipelagos are Society Islands, Gambier, Australes and Marquesas Islands,
  • The place is actually an atoll, i.e. an ancient volcano, now submerged and only the motu (sandbank) outcropping at the water’s surface,
  • There are a lot of inhabited small islets around the atoll. The Polynesians use them for copra culture (coconuts) and pandanus culture,
  • It would be a great idea so discover the place with a catamaran or a sailboat,
  • It is the second largest atoll in the world,
  • The atoll was discovered at the beginning of the 17th century,
  • Today, the two main activities of this paradise and tropical island are scuba diving (the Polynesian waters are very beautiful, ideal for discovering marine fauna)  and pearl farming,
  • Many tourists spend their honeymoon trips to discover this idyllic setting, as there’s a lot of great places to stay

Now you know all the localisation information and where is Ragiora located.

More information on Rangiroa Atoll

Here is some information from a geographical and geological point of view. Like all the Polynesian islands, Rangiroa has not always been a tropical paradise of white sand and coconut trees and palms. Geologically speaking, the island is an ancient volcano that over millions of years, under the impact of land/marine erosion and the island’s subsidence under its own weight, has now disappeared. The current boundaries of the atoll correspond approximately to what the island had as an area at the time it was still emerging. Over time, corals develop around the island (when conditions are ideal like here) and then a coral reef appears. In the long term, the atoll (like all these tropical paradises) is therefore doomed to disappear.

For information, the atoll is so impressively large that you can’t see the other side of the atoll when you’re on it. You will tell me, an atoll is not high, but it is a real inland sea that can be found between the two sides. The atoll is about 80 km long and 32 km wide. On the other hand, there are quite a few small areas on the atoll at shallow depths that allow you to discover all the underwater fauna and flora.

rangiroa day trips

  • Blue Lagoon excursion : a classic, but an absolute must!
  • Trip to Reef Island : another top quality, magical day trip!
  • Trip to the Green Lagoon : a half day in a dream scenery!
  • Snorkelling with dolphins : the best place in Polynesia to enjoy this experience!

See all activities in Polynesia

The unmissable on the island of Rangiroa

As promised, based on my weekend spent there and the information gathered, here are the things to do or see on the Rangiora atoll, both in terms of activities in Rangiroa, as well as visits, etc.. To clarify this from the beginning, it is possible to visit the atoll all year round, even if the best season remains (as on all the Polynesian islands) the cool season or the inter-seasons (roughly from May to September).

1) A diving trip on the Rangiroa atoll

This is obviously the main reason why the majority of tourists come to the atoll. Not all of them come for a dive trip, but if you like the clear shallow waters and the underwater life, is of course a must.

If you arrive for a dive cruise, everything will be managed by your organization. If you come on your own and visit the other South Pacific islands in French Polynesia, you can book your dives yourself by calling the island’s diving clubs (there are 7 to my knowledge in 2018). I personally chose the Yaka diving center , and everything was fine.

The best time to come and dive: remember that whales are generally present from August to October and that the preferred time to see hammerhead sharks is from January to March (potentially in the rainy/cyclonic season).

On the program: a multitude of sharks (tiger sharks, grey sharks, hammerhead sharks, white tips, etc.), manta rays (which you can get very close to if you are lucky) and the classic eagle rays, dolphins, various tropical fish, etc. For those who are not diving fans (but only white sandy beaches), don’t hesitate to put on a mask and snorkel to discover the wonderful underwater world.

Rangiroa island, perfect for divers

A few more details about scuba diving in Rangiroa:

  • There are currently six diving clubs on the atoll, all based in the north of the atoll, in Avatoru,
  • Almost all the diving takes place in the two passes of the atoll, Tiputa and Avatoru;
  • These include Rangiroa Diving Centre, Y’AKA Plongée, Top Dive, Rangiroa Plongée, Raie Manta Club and The 6 Passengers,
  • In terms of prices, expect to pay around 12,000 to 15,000 xpf for a first dive and between 8,500 and 12,000 xpf for a single dive,
  • The best known sites include Tiputa Pass, Avatoru Pass, Motu Paio and the Fault site.

2) Reef Island (“Ile aux récif »)

Here is one of the excursion and expedition I didn’t have the opportunity to do during my weekend on site. It was a choice on my part having already done a lot of boat trips of this type on other islands and atolls in French Polynesia, but especially because I had actually come to dive…

What can you expect then? This is a place, south of Rangiroa Atoll (1 hour by boat), where coral reefs are out of water and can reach 2m in height. The result is apparently splendid and you can walk and swim between the channels, open plains and turquoise waters. This is clearly known as one of the beautiful and best sites of the atoll. As a bonus, you sunbathe all day on the boat (sailing), usually eat a good local meal (like raw fish in coconut milk) and return in the late afternoon. Generally, you never come back disappointed!

The “Sable Rose” place is about 1h30/2h by boat to the south-east of the atoll. Operators don’t usually offer these trips so often, but the feedback is excellent.

You can organise it directly with the guesthouse or with Rangiroa Excursion , which we highly recommend and whose reviews are excellent! Expect to pay between 12,000 and 15,000 xpf depending on the excursion. They also offer trips to the Green Lagoon (7,500 xpf) and snorkelling at Pass d’Avatoru (3 hours).

3) The blue lagoon, a guaranteed change of scenery

This is the other ‘must do’ on Rangiroa, almost world famous. To imagine the postcard, it is a site made up of 5 sandbanks (motu) that surround a kind of mini sea of almost 30 hectares, all are placed on the coral reef of the atoll.

Tourists know the spot very well, but I must admit that the site is superb, if only to relax in the middle of hundreds of black tip reef sharks that guard the site (you can see the fins in the distance!). It takes an hour by boat to get there and the sea can sometimes be rough! As with Reef Island, several providers offer this excursion. Just ask the guesthouse where you’re staying; they’ll arrange it for you. This is the opportunity to meet sharks up close 🙂

4) Surfing and fishing

Among the (nautical) activities to do in Rangiroa, fishing, paddle boarding and surfing on the atoll is very nice. It’s in fact possible to surf in the Tiputa pass, famous for its dolphin parades! Some service providers organize big game fishing days for those interested!

5) Dolphin watching at Ohotu Point

Among other very nice things to do in Rangiroa, take the time, by bike for example, to go to Ohotu Point which overlooks the Tiputa Pass. Feel free to have a drink on the terrace at Maitai Rangiroa or at the Teina and Marie pension. With some luck, you will have the opportunity to observe the dolphin broom in a beautiful light. A magical show 🙂

6) Go around the main motu

biking rangiroa

Even if Rangiroa atoll is particularly famous for scuba diving, I advise you to get on a bike and go around the main motu. It’s very nice, even if it’s hot, and you have great and panoramic views of the turquoise lagoon and ocean. You can also swim in superb “hoa”, the water passages between the lagoon side and the ocean. Take advantage of the beautiful day trip to bring back some local souvenirs sold by the roadside.

7) Swimming in turquoise waters

And yes, because spending a few days on an atoll is also enjoying the white sand and coconut trees, right? Whether you are on the lagoon or ocean side, you will always have the opportunity to swim in crystal clear water. Of course, the best spots for swimming are always on the lagoon side, as in all the atolls of the South Pacific! However, you won’t find many white sandy beaches on the Rangiora atoll.

One of the most beautiful sites where I had the opportunity to swim is at the tip of Avatoru, at the other end of the motu. The water has an extraordinary turquoise color and strolling there for an hour is not far from paradise!

8) Visit of the villages of Tiputa and Avatoru

There is nothing great in the villages to do or see, but during your bike ride, take the time to stroll through the streets of both polynesian villages. An atmosphere of a ghost village prevails under the crushing heat in the middle of the day.

amazing beach rangiroa

9) Taste the local wine

And yes, if you weren’t aware yet, there are many vines on the atoll that produce wine. Isn’t it too rare even to be mentioned? This famous Tahitian wine is produced on a small motu off the Avatoru Pass. Only white and rosé wines are produced. Depending on the season, visits are possible on the Estate with tastings!

That’s it for the things to do and see on Rangiroa Atoll. If you have time to go and you are in French Polynesia, don’t hesitate to go and spend a few days there! Here is some practical advice to prepare your trip on site. Do you want to discover something else? Here is the atoll of Mataiva !

Practical advice to prepare your trip on site

How to get to rangiroa.

The trick is to look at the best flight comparator and determine “the cheapest month”. All you have to do now is set your holiday dates for French Polynesia. The Cheapest flights to Tahiti from the USA are here , starting at 500/600$. There are 4 main companies flying here : Air Tahiti Nui, Air France, Frenchbee and United Airline. Note there is no international airport for now.

Once there, it is very easy to jump from island to island, regardless of the cost of the ticket in relation to the distance. Rangiroa is served by two airlines from the island of Tahiti: Air Tahiti and Moana Air (arriving in July 2023). The average cost is 50,000 xpf (Air Tahiti) and 33,000 xpf (Air Moana). Air Tahiti also offers passes to visit Fakarava and Tikehau, two other local atolls. There are daily flights to the paradise island. The island is served daily from Tahiti (the main island).

You want to know everything about transport in French Polynesia ? In any case, during your vacation in French Polynesia, air travel will be the main expense.

How to get around Rangiroa atoll?

Rangiroa may be the second largest atoll in the world, but you’ll spend most of your time on the main motu. This is where you’ll find the airport, shops, restaurants and all the scuba diving centres. In short, a walk around the motu in the heat is out of the question, but a bike ride is more than possible. You don’t need to hire a car in Rangiroa. Bikes can often be hired directly from the guesthouses. Rangiroa Location also offers small cars and 4x4s, although I’m not sure why… E-Bike Rangiroa also offers electrically assisted bicycles (VAE) for between 1,000 and 3,500 xpf depending on the model and duration.

The rest of the time you either go diving and the club picks you up from your guesthouse/hotel, or you eat at the local restaurant (to taste Polynesian dishes and immerse yourself in Polynesian culture), which is a stone’s throw from where you’re staying. The same goes for excursions, where the service providers will pick you up.

Where to stay in Rangiroa?

Rangiroa Atoll offers a wide range of possibilities to sleep on site, from a small local boarding house, to an Airbnb, to luxury hotels. Having only been there once, I can only recommend 1000 times the small unpretentious guesthouse (as I like them): at Olga’s (Pension Turiroa). It offers bungalows, double rooms and even dormitories for small budgets. The area is magical on the edge of the lagoon, and a stone’s throw from the small local restaurants.

Alternatively, if you are there during the tourism fair (or know someone here in Tahiti), you can use “Séjour dans les îles” to book the flight + guesthouse, which is cheaper than taking them both separately. But you have to be in Tahiti to book through this.

As far as other accommodation is concerned, here are some serious recommendations for where to stay in Rangiroa.

Guesthouse & camping in Rangiroa

Here is a small selection of this type of accommodation in Rangiroa, in addition to the Pension Olga mentioned above:

  • Pension Rangiroa plage : offers authentic accommodation on one of the white sandy beaches of the island, with double rooms, dormitories and camping pitches with a magnificent view over the lagoon. Please note that it is not possible to cook on site or have half board. The welcome is said to be warm.
  • Bounty Lodge Rangiroa : a recently refurbished place with a first class welcome! You’ll find studios set in a beautiful, tranquil and lush garden. You can even cook for yourself!
  • Pension Cécile : a group of simple but clean and comfortable bungalows. Bicycles, kayaks and mountain bikes are available free of charge. The food is said to be excellent!
  • Tiputa Lodge Rangiroa : Large accommodation with great views! Breakfast is on the house and you can use the private facilities if you want to dive!
  • Rangiroa Cottage : Here’s a little newcomer we wanted to mention. It’s a single air-conditioned bungalow with a lovely kitchen and a terrace overlooking the ocean.
  • Va’a i te Moana : Here you’ll find 3 modern bungalows, glamping facilities, a dormitory and even a private bedroom. Bikes, snorkelling and fishing equipment are also available.

Hotels in Rangiroa

Compared to Fakarava, Rangiroa Atoll offers visitors very good accommodation options, in beautiful hotels or similar. If you want to stay in beautiful places with great facilities, here are some recommendations:

  • Kia Ora Resort & spa : This luxury resort offers a varied range of 60 bungalows and villas, including 10 overwater bungalows, with top facilities including a spa and infinity pool, and an excellent reputation for its restaurant and bar.
  • Le Coconut Lodge : a charming place to stay, with large air-conditioned wooden bungalows, quality bedding and a warm welcome, all in a tropical setting on the beach overlooking the turquoise lagoon.
  • Relais Joséphine : This unique honeymoon specialist offers comfortable bungalows with sea or garden views, providing a peaceful and tranquil experience with the chance to watch dolphins from the terrace.
  • Maitai Rangiroa : This hotel offers 34 air-conditioned bungalows set in a beachfront garden, including 6 Lagoon Bungalows, 10 Premium Garden Rooms and 18 Garden Bungalows, offering modern comforts with included services such as infinity pool, pontoon access, kayaks and snorkelling equipment. Excursions can be arranged on request!
  • Tevahine Dream : This resort offers an exceptional experience with 4 Polynesian-style bungalows, each with its own unique charm. There are three lagoon side bungalows and one tropical garden side bungalow with a small swimming pool. Each is well equipped with a kitchenette and the famous meals are served overlooking the lagoon. Kayaks, snorkelling equipment and excursions are also available and Norbert, the owner, is always on hand to help.

Off the beaten track places in Rangiroa

In addition to the guesthouse and hotel options mentioned above, I wanted to mention two secluded establishments that are a dream and could very well be great options for a stay in Rangiroa atoll:

  • Aotera Guesthouse : Situated on a motu at the north-western tip of Rangiroa, this establishment offers a real haven of peace at an affordable price, with around ten lagoon-side bungalows offering uninterrupted views of an exceptional white sandy beach. The well-maintained facilities, lagoon-side restaurant/bar and on-site activities make it an attractive option for travellers seeking tranquillity and natural beauty.
  • Tihimani Lodge : The lodge offers a heavenly setting south of Rangiroa Bliss (another property). With five charming bungalows, three of which face the beach, you’ll appreciate the peace and quiet, as well as free facilities such as bikes and kayaks. Feedback has been excellent, highlighting the warm welcome and exceptional beauty of the place, where the owners grow their own produce to provide tasty meals.

Where to eat in Rangiroa?

To eat on an atoll, there aren’t 30 options. Either you have a large budget and you are going to eat at the restaurant of your pension or hotel. Either you be a little careful and you can cook your own dishes. At Olga, you have access to a kitchen to cook directly for yourself. This is one of the tricks to make a trip cheaper to French Polynesia. A good little raw fish in coconut milk on the edge in this sumptuous setting is still not bad at all….

Is Rangiroa Atoll worth it then?

That’s a fair question, isn’t it? Honestly, I only spent four days on Rangiroa atoll for vacations, but I was pleasantly surprised. At first I was afraid of finding myself in a big tourist place, especially because of diving. But in reality, the main motu is big and you don’t really see many people.

At the same time, I was there in the middle of the rainy season (theoretically) in French Polynesia. So maybe that made a difference. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed my stay, especially at the pension which is very quiet and in a splendid setting. Spending a few days on the island is a real treat and I will undoubtedly come back to dive. I don’t know if it’s better to choose Rangiroa than Fakarava for diving. I know Fakarava, but I only went there for work for two days. I didn’t have time to get into the atmosphere. Fakarava’s main motu is huge and it is impossible to visit everything by bike. Many choose “Faka” for the famous shark wall, that may be a reason to go there anyway! By the way, do you want to know more about diving in Fakarava ?

That’s it, I’m coming to the end of this article with a tropical taste. I hope this article has inspired you to visit Rangioa . Now you know all about what to do in Rangiroa : things to see and do. Personally, I loved the weekend spent there, between relaxing, enjoying white sand beaches, scuba diving and boat trips (cruises). I will definitely go back to dive (as well as to Fakarava). In my opinion, during a trip to Tahiti, a trip to the Tuamotu is mandatory, if only to feel the tranquility of the place and enjoy the lagoon. So does this article make you want to live in Rangiroa? To go play Robinson Crusoe on the spot? Would you like to discover another French polynesian paradise? These are the Gambier Islands , in the archipelago of the same name!

I look forward to seeing you soon for another Polynesian discovery.

County Road 26 to open Monday for local, critical trips

Limited travel for commuters using the lake city cutoff opens after state and county collaboration as bridge closure continues.

Montrose and Gunnison Counties — This weekend, CDOT and Gunnison County are working together to accelerate improvements to County Road 26 (Lake City Cutoff) so it can open Monday for local commuter travel between Montrose and Gunnison.  At the same time, engineers continue to conduct safety inspections of the US Highway 50 bridge crossing the Blue Mesa Reservoir at Dillon Pinnacles. This bridge, located west of Gunnison at Mile Point 136.3, closed Thursday in the interest of public safety after an inspection revealed a crack in one of the girders. The technical structure name for the bridge is K-07-B.

Recognizing the US 50 closure creates a significant detour for commuters traveling between Montrose and Gunnison, CDOT and Gunnison County officials this weekend prioritized getting a shorter access route in place for local travel between the two communities. That collaboration will continue as officials work to further fortify the road with gravel and manage traffic to a level that the road can safely carry.

“We are starting slow in order to increase the chances we can go faster later. The impact on western Colorado cannot be understated and we are exhausting all opportunities and partnerships to mitigate the impacts of the bridge closure,” said Martin Schmidt, Assistant Gunnison County Manager for Public Works.

On Monday, April 22, pilot cars will lead  passenger vehicles through the access route two times a day in each direction. Because CR 26 is a high-mountain, unpaved road that is not intended to accommodate the traffic volumes of US 50, travel times will be limited and commercial vehicles exceeding a 16,001 gross vehicle weight rating are prohibited. The schedule for piloted travel is:

  • 6 to 6:30 a.m. and 6 to 6:30 p.m. for westbound travel
  • 7 to 7:30 a.m. and 7 to 7:30 p.m. for eastbound travel

The queue for westbound pilot car operations will start near the intersection of CO 149 and CR 26 and the queue for eastbound travel will start near the intersection of US 50 and CR 26. The travel time on the access route is expected to be 30 minutes or more.

County Road 26 will only be open for local, essential travel during these timeframes. The road will remain closed at all other times for the ongoing restoration work needed to ensure the road remains safe for travel.

A hotline and email continue to be in place to assist customers with questions about the closure. Anyone with questions can reach out via 970-648-4423 or [email protected] . Calls will be closely monitored and will receive a prompt reply. Information is also available on the project website at bit.ly/us50bridge . Travelers should refer to COtrip.org or the smartphone COtrip Planner app to plan an alternate route.

“CDOT appreciates Gunnison county’s dedication and hard work as we cooperate to offer more options to help the western slope manage this safety closure.  CDOT will continue to support the county as we focus on the opening of County Road 26 to serve the critical needs of residents,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “County Road 26 is an important local route that is up to five hours more efficient than detouring via state highways. However, this road currently has a natural roadbed and can only accommodate limited traffic - so it is important that we help Gunnison County focus this capacity on the needs of local communities most impacted by the closure.”

There are two recommended detours for through travel via Interstate 70 to the north or US 160 to the south and these detours add six to eight hours of travel time. CDOT is coordinating with emergency service providers to ensure emergency response is unaffected.

Travel Impacts

  • US 50 is closed between Montrose and Gunnison
  • Recommended alternate routes are I-70 to the north or US 160 to the south
  • A limited, local detour is in place for travel at specific times

rangiroa day trips

Want to take a trip around the world? You can in two seconds thanks to Google.

Releasing its annual Earth Day doodle, Google displays the beauty of all six continents around the world. Using satellite technology, the search engine giant created a collage with each Google letter that shows the global sustainability efforts within each continent. The goal for this doodle is to give the audience a tour of positive environmental change in the world.

Here's a look at the Google Doodle for Earth Day:

When is Earth Day 2024?: Get ready to help your planet with our guide to the holiday.

Letters in Earth Day Google Doodle represent climate change progress

Location: Turks and Caicos Islands

Turks and Caicos is home to many biodiversity areas. In an effort to preserve the countries conservation, the island has made an effort to protect natural resources such as reefs and restoring endangered species like the rock iguana.

Location: Scorpion Reef National Park, Mexico .

Flying to the Gulf of Mexico, Google makes a stop in Arrecife de Alacranes. This is the largest reef in the southern Gulf of Mexico and the UNESCO biosphere reserve. In this marine protected area, many coral and several endangered bird and turtle species call this area home.

Location: Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland

If you like the cold you'll love Google's pitstop in Iceland. Although the country is well-known for its polar bears, the country has more beauty offer. In 2008, the UNESCO World Heritage Site was established as a national park to protect the ecosystem in and around Europe’s largest glacier. With the mix of volcanoes and glacial ice, this area is able to produce rare landscapes and flora.

Location: Jaú National Park, Brazil

If you'd like to spend time in a forest, Brazil's got you covered. Parque Nacional do Jaú is one of South America’s largest forest reserves. Located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest this UNESCO World Heritage Site protects many species, including the Amazonian manatee, the giant otter, jaguar and the margay.

Location: Green Great Wall, Nigeria

Bringing you back to the heat, Google take us to Nigeria. The African Union-led initiative's goal is to restore the land affected by desertification across the width of Africa. To combat this, the group has planted trees and other vegetation in sustainable ways. By doing this, communities in the area have seen an increased economic opportunities, food security and climate resilience since 2007.

Location: Pilbara Islands Nature Reserves, Australia

To end the journey around the world, Google's last stop is one of the Pilbara Island Nature Reserves in Australia. These reserves help protect fragile ecosystems, increasingly rare natural habitats and threatened or endangered species. Some of the species include marine turtles, shorebirds and seabirds.
