The DTCM Deputy Director Missions, Abdullah bin Suwaidan, said the support was part of the endeavours to promote Dubai in different parts of the world, especially in established source markets like Russia. As part of the tour, a conference entitled 'Dubai -Year Round Destination' was held at the Habtoor Grand Resort and Spa. Bin Suwaidan outlined the evolution of Dubai, DTCM initiatives to promote and market Dubai across the world, and a variety of multi-million dirham infrastructure and tourism-related projects.

Day 01 : arrival : moscow.

On arriving at the Moscow Airport, you will be greeted at the airport by our representative and then be transferred to your hotel in Moscow. After check-in, relax at the hotel after a long journey and spend the night at the hotel.

Day 02 : Moscow : City Tour

After breakfast, get ready to explore the best of the city. Visit the many popular attractions of Moscow including The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world and also visit the Bolshoi Theatre which is a historic theatre of Moscow with Ballet and Opera performances. Day 04 : St. Petersburgh City Tour

Russian tourism to Dubai increases 10%

The willingness to enjoy the best things in life makes the Russian expatriate and tourist contingency exceedingly good as a low key source of foreign direct investment.

According to retailers Russian tourists are one of the more active visitors to Dubai shopping malls.

Gulf News recently polled a number of retailers selling the Dh20,000 plus Vertu mobile phone to find out who was buying it. According to country demographics, visitors from Russia came first, closely followed by visitors from Saudi Arabia, then Kuwait and finally the United Arab Emirates.

The importance of the Russian market explains why the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) is making the country a focus.

Dubai not only wants to attract 15 million visitors to the country by 2010, it also wants to make sure they shop in the emirate's increasing number of malls, and enjoy all the facilities Dubai has to offer.

So far, so good. Dubai's efforts have paid off with the number of Russian tourists growing by 10.4 per cent last year, reaching 286,000, according to the Department of Tour-ism and Commerce's own figures.

There was also a 57.1 per cent increase (373,958) in Russian passengers passing through Dubai International Airport in the same period, as well as a 31 per cent increase in the weekly flights from Moscow, which now total some 38 flights.

The number of Russian tour operators featuring Dubai in their programmes has crossed the 600 mark.

To boost numbers further the Department of Tourism and Commerce and Alpha Tours, the Dubai-based ground handler, hosted the annual conference of Natalie Tours.

Natalie Tours brought 240 hand-picked top travel agents, from its network of 7,000, to the emirate.

According to Natalie Tours, Dubai has been attracting greater attention in the Russian and CIS markets for business and leisure.

The Russian traveller is attracted to Dubai as a year round destination that is safe and guaranteed to have sunshine virtually 365 days of the year, said the operator.

Alex - the Russian speaking tour guide

This is the second year in a row, that our family books Alex - the Russian speaking tour guide, exclusively for us while we stay in UAE . Upon arrival to the private jet terminal when we were met by Alex, I have asked my 4 years old son whether he remembered Alex who was with us last year, his reply was, that he will never forget Alex !!! I believe, that says it all. Alex is a true professional, who has made our stay in Dubai an enjoyable one. He seems to know everyone in town, whether it's a pediatric doctor , restaurant manager or pharmacy consultant. Myself and my 2 children felt absolutely comfortable having him around. He came up with tailor made programme that suited perfectly well for the whole duration of our 3 weeks long stay in Dubai. It involved a full day trip to Abu Dhabi with the visit of the mosque, trips to the desert, visit of creek park and Dubai dolphinarium , Kidzania and global village. Though we were here last year for 2 weeks and this year for 3 weeks, every time he manages to tell us some new stories and gives us an update of the new developments in UAE. He is the true ambassador of Dubai and speaks always highly of UAE as his second home. He made us fall in love with this wonderful country. His is always friendly and very diplomatic. He speaks very good Russian and has his own way of approaching kids. He speaks their language too :) He is a great asset to the team of Arabian Adventures. Would be nice if you could pass our compliments to Alex and the whole Arabian adventures team : safari guides and Anna who took our bookings. We are definitely looking forward to comeback next year and book Arabian adventures services again.

Very well organised, on time and the driver Adel, from Yemen, was fantastic and very professional. I loved the experience and would do it again in a flash and worth every dirham paid. My wife and I did the sand dune safari on the 16th Nov. We got picked up at the four point by Sheraton. It was a bit disappointing because the tour guide was not friendly and not informative. From the time he picked us up he only asked us a couple of questions.........that was all. The tour guide could have made the tour interesting.............instead kept quiet throughout the journey. Otherwise the arrangements at the camp site was fantastic. Mike

We took the Arabian Adventures – Sundowner – Dune Dinner Safari - this trip has so much included that it is fantastic value for money. We were picked up at our hotel in a Toyota Landcruiser with roll bars which held six people in total. We were driven to the desert area and then the fun started. The first show was a demo of falconry with an amazing display of what the bird can do, and a great commentary. Off then for our ride in the desert, up and down the endless dunes - very exhilarating, but no good if you have a bad back! We stopped twice, once for a photo op and then to watch the setting sun. Next it was off to the “Bedouin Village”. Firstly we had a short camel ride with photos taken by the camel driver – great fun. Next we had another photo op with the falcons. Entering the village proper we were welcomed with coffee and dates, before settling ourselves down on a large carpeted area for a drink – unlimited drinks were included in the price including wine, beer and soft drinks. We then invited to: enjoy camel milk ice cream; smoke a hookah pipe; drink more Arabian coffee. The ladies were invited to complimentary henna painting. The main meal consisted of a barbecue with all the Middle Eastern trimmings – fantastic food, followed later by local desserts. For entertainment there was a belly dancer who was terrific. This was followed by turning off all the lights, laying on one’s back on the carpet and gazing at the sky in the desert - fantastic. We were picked up at 4pm and dropped off at 9 pm – what a great experience and at 360 Dirhams per person amazing value for money for this all inclusive experience. By the way there was a modern toilet block in the village.

We booked Arabian Adventures through the Hilton Jumeirah where we were staying. Our family of four with a 6 and 8 year old had a private vehicle which was perfect. Our driver, Taslim was amazing. So knowledgeable and friendly. He let us have fun dune bashing and felt very safe even being 16 weeks pregnant.

I really wanted to see the interior of the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and as far as I could tell, this seemed to be the only company offering that. I was punctually collected from my hotel in a small vehicle and after a long drive, arrived at a meeting point on the outskirts of Dubai. Here we spent far too much time waiting for others to arrive and it was very hot by this time. Unfortunately, this all happened in reverse at the end of the tour and the time wasted was a detraction. Having said that, the tour itself was excellent, visiting many attractions including the Grand Mosque which was amazing. The guide was knowledgeable and clearly gave directions for meeting times etc. He also provided as much cold water as desired and in all, it was a very professional operation. Just a shame about the assembling of passengers.

UAE tour operators hit as Russian travel market contracts

Clients queue outside the office of tour operator Neva as they attempt to get back their money for paid vacation packages. Neva, one of the five Russian tour operators which closed shop recently, had the greatest number of tie-ups with agencies abroad, including in the UAE. Reuters

Tour operators in the Emirates handling the large inbound Russian and Ukranian travel market expect to diversify to other Central Asian markets to recover from a loss of business caused by political and military conflict.

Five Russian travel agencies have closed operations in the last two months with the latest, IntAer, shutting down on Tuesday due to declining demand on the back of the weakening Russian rouble and the crisis in Ukraine.

Yesterday, the rouble slid to a four-month low on concern that the Russian president Vladimir Putin may be preparing to send troops into eastern Ukraine.

The rouble has fallen 4.9 per cent against the US dollar in the past month as the United States and the European Union announced tougher sanctions on some Russian companies and industries.

Russia was Dubai’s fifth largest source market last year, when 403,990 guests from that country checked into the emirate’s hotels. The number was a 2.9 per cent rise over the previous year.

Of the Russian tour operators that have closed operations, IntAer, Labirint and Neva had the greatest number of tie-ups with agencies abroad, including in the UAE.

“We are seeing a decline in the business from Russia due to the current crisis where the [uncertainty in Ukraine] is creating a certain tension for any movement within the region, concerns about getting stuck while travelling [abroad] and the uncertainty created by the [Malaysia Airlines] MH[17] crash,” said Ajay Nair, the head of corporate travel and sales for the UAE at the Dubai-based anta. Globalstar.

“Currency fluctuation, political uncertainty and also the isolation by a lot of countries, including global restrictions put on the Russian government”, were taking a toll, he said.

In the first half of this year, the company handled 325 people, down from 450 in the same period last year. While luxury travellers prefer to stick to Dubai, budget travellers choose Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah’s beach properties, Mr Nair said.

His company managed to cushion the effect by looking to other Central Asian markets, such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. One of its global partners in Russia is also helping it bring family, independent and corporate travellers.

The closure of four Ukrainian tour operators has also hit the sector in the UAE.

“The payment cycle was slow for the past six months, but we didn’t know these would go bankrupt,” said Kulwant Singh, Lama Tours’s managing director. “We are going the legal route, trying to recover our money, but there’s nothing much we can do.” The company handles 5,000 Ukrainian tourists a year.

Lama Tours, which handles 11,000 Russian tourists a year, did not have ties with the shuttered Russian tour operators, but Mr Singh said the “situation is quite alarming”.

The closure of the Moscow-based IntAer came three days after Labirint, also based in the city, suspended operations, stranding as many as 27,000 Russian tourists abroad.

A “sharp drop in demand and purchasing power due to the sharp rise in the exchange rate and negative political situation” forced the closure, according to a statement on IntAer’s website.

Businesses were hit in April when government employees and military personnel were asked to avoid travelling abroad.

In July, one of the oldest tour agencies, Neva, said it could not continue operations, cancelling 6,000 tours abroad, according to the Moscow Times . Two smaller companies, Expo-Tour and Roza Vetrov Mir, also went the same way last month.

Most were unable to sell on the large number of airline tickets they had purchased at the beginning of the travel season, said Ksenia Buzlaeva, the commercial director for the Moscow-based Premium Club Travel. It partners with Emirates Airline and Etihad Airways to bring tourists to the UAE.

The Russian travel season lasts between September and June. Last season Ms Buzlaeva’s agency helped bring 6,000 tourists to the UAE, up by 10 per cent over 2012.

“The UAE is our largest market and we were not affected, and we expect more people in the next season,” Ms Buzlaeva said. “We are thinking that more people will be interested in the UAE than other countries.”

Russian Tourists Opt to Become Dubai Residents

Dubai's grand plan to convert tourists into residents has worked, at least on the Russians. Russia travel into Dubai is slowing down for the first time in months.

After a six-month streak as Dubai’s second-largest tourism market, inbound travel from Russia is now slowing down. Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, Russians have been coming in droves to havens such as Dubai or the Maldives. A year on, many of those tourists have become residents in the emirate.

Russia has slipped to fourth in Dubai’s tourism source market leaderboard, now overtaken by Saudi Arabia and the UK. Around 731,000 Russian travelers have visited Dubai up to August this year, which is as far as the government data goes at the time of writing. Almost 785,000 tourists came from Saudi and 734,000 came from the UK.

For Dubai, this is still an 85% increase in Russian tourists compared to the same point last year. What is happening now is that these tourists are settling in Dubai.

The flood of Russian money into the city’s housing market is so much so that developers are rushing to build additional housing to satisfy Russian tastes. Local publications such as Arabian Gulf Business Insight (AGBI) have dubbed these the city’s “Little Moscow communities.”

Dubai real estate major Betterhomes in July reported that, in the second quarter of this year, Russians were number three in the list of largest buyers in Dubai by nationality, behind Indians and Brits.

Earlier in the year, Dubai Tourism announced its new plan to convert tourists into residents.

Speaking at DET’s latest City Briefing, held at Dubai World Trade Centre on June 15, Dubai Tourism CEO Issam Kazim said, “Today we have two new KPIs. We want to make sure Dubai continues to be one of the best cities to work in, and more importantly, one of the best cities in the world to live in.”

Around a quarter of all Dubai tourists return within a year. Kazim said convincing those people to make Dubai a permanent home is key.

He added, “Once you bring them in, you’d hope they spend more money next time and stay for longer. Eventually, they would consider living in Dubai, and we have all the visas to facilitate that. We’d like them to work here, live here and retire here.

“It’s all about closing the loop,” Kazim said.
