How to refresh website favicons in Safari on Mac

A favicon is the small website logo you see in your browser tab. The ability to see favicons for websites in Safari is convenient. It lets you spot the site you want at a glance by seeing just the icon on your tab, in your bookmark list, and in your history.

But have you ever noticed favicons that go missing or are incorrect, showing the wrong icon? You can “refresh” the website favicons in Safari on Mac in just a few steps, and here, we’ll show you how.

Several websites in Safari on Mac showing tabs and favicons

Delete Safari’s favicon cache

If you’re experiencing favicons that aren’t right, maybe they have icons for different websites; clearing the cache and starting over is a good option. Here’s how to do that:

1) Close and quit Safari .

2) Using Finder, click Go > Go to Folder from the menu bar

3) Enter ~/Library/Safari/Favicon Cache/ in the pop-up window and go to this location.

4) Select all items in the cache folder and move them to the Trash . You can select all with the keyboard shortcut Command + A and then drag them to your Trash or right-click and pick Move to Trash.

Move Safari Favicon Cache to Trash

5) Empty your Trash or delete those items from it. (For help with both options, check out our tutorial on How to Empty Trash on Mac .)

6) Open Safari .

The Safari favicon cache folder will rebuild itself as you visit websites. And you’ll need to visit the sites you have saved for the favicons to appear. But those that were incorrect or missing should show up correctly.

Safari Bookmarks With and Without Favicons

Alternative option

If you’d rather try something else, there is one other option that may or may not work.

Open the website with the incorrect favicon in a private window in Safari. You can do this easily by right-clicking Safari in your Dock and selecting New Private Window or selecting File > New Private Window from the menu bar.

Visit the website in the private window, and when you return to your non-private Safari, the favicon may be correct.

The suggestion comes from the Apple Community Forum . This method did not work for the user with the question, nor did it work for me; however, it’s worth a try if you’d like.

Enabling favicons in Safari

As a reminder, you can enable favicons in Safari on older versions of macOS by following these simple steps:

1) With Safari open, click Safari > Preferences from the menu bar.

2) Select the Tabs tab.

3) Check the box for Show website icons in tabs to enable favicons.

Hopefully, either rebuilding the Safari favicon cache or opening a specific site in a private window works for you. And if you have another method to refresh favicons in Safari that works for you, please share it in the comments below!

Disable favicons in Firefox and Safari

Macworld.com –

If you’ve used a web browser for any length of time, you’re probably familiar with favicons–those small 16-by-16-pixel images that appear to the left of the site’s address in the URL bar. While many people, myself included, like this little touch of personalization in the URL bar, others would prefer not to see them. Perhaps these users find them ugly, or notice that they can slow down the opening of the bookmarks menu. But whatever the reason, if you dislike favicons, today’s tip explains how to disable them in both Safari (3 and 4 Beta) and Firefox.

To disable favicons in Firefox, open the browser and type about:config into the URL bar, then press Return. You may then see a warning about how modifying advanced settings may void your warranty; click the “I’ll be careful, I promise” button to proceed anyway. You’ll now be looking at a long list of preferences, along with their status, type, and value. In the Filter box above the list, type browser.chrome; this will greatly shorten the list of preferences.

In the resulting list, double-click on browser.chrome.favicons to change its value from true to false. Then double-click on browser.chrome.site_icons, to set that preference to false, too. That’s it; you’re done. From now on, you’ll no longer see favicons as you surf the net.

To reset things to normal, just reverse the process–go back into about:config and double-click the same two preferences again to set them back to true.

For Safari, first quit the browser, then open Terminal (in Applications -> Utilities), and type this command:

defaults write.com.apple.Safari WebIconDatabaseEnabled -bool NO

Relaunch Safari, and you’ll be browsing favicon-free. To undo this trick in Safari, quit the browser, open Terminal again, and repeat the above command, but replace NO with YES. I’ve tested the solutions in both Firefox and Safari, and they work as described–though I did reverse the settings after testing, as I really do prefer to see the favicons.

Thanks to macosxhints readers bdash and dangil for these tips.

Hiding favicons in Safari 15 (kinda)

  • Posted 21 September 2021

Apple released Safari 15 today, a release which has had a pretty controversial beta cycle. Apple showed off a major redesign at WWDC 2021, including a complete revamp of how tabs work. That design was roundly criticised, and they’ve almost completely rolled back to the previous design.

Unfortunately, Safari 15 doesn’t allow you to disable favicons, and I find this incredibly annoying:

Four browser tabs with icons next to each of the tab titles. The icons are all different colours and just noisy.

I don’t want random splotches of colour in my tab UI, eww.

There used to be a preference to disable it, but it’s been removed in Safari 15. (Screenshot of preferences for Safari 13 , Safari 15 .) This is what my tab bar used to look like:

Four browser tabs with the same tabs as before, but now the tab titles only have text. And there's more text than before!

If you like favicons, more power to you – but I find them unhelpful and distracting, and I want to be able to turn them off.

Until Apple provides that preference (FB9643385), I found a way to at least make them more uniform and monochrome, and so less distracting:

The same tabs as before, but now there's a monochrome letter in the tab titles.

To get this effect, run these three commands in Terminal:

To reverse it and go back to the standard behaviour, run these three commands:

These three folders are where Safari keeps the various icons it puts in the tab bar. By changing their permissions to 000 , they become unreadable, so Safari has to fall back to the generic letter icons.

This has the unfortunate side effect of removing favicons from history , where I did find them useful. It’s just the tab bar where I don’t want to see them.

I still find this less obtrusive version a downgrade, so I’ve installed an old version of Safari Technology Preview – I share this permissions hack in case somebody else dislikes favicons, and would prefer the monochrome versions.

How-To Geek

How to add favicons to safari on macos.

We've been clear: Mac users should ditch Chrome for Safari.

We've been clear: Mac users should ditch Chrome for Safari . It offers much better battery life, better performance, and content filters are way better than ad blockers.

Related: Mac Users Should Ditch Google Chrome for Safari

Safari is better than Chrome in every way, bar one: Safari lacks favicons. Which is weird: these little icons are a great way to identify which tabs are which. Maybe Apple thinks they're ugly, or maybe they just don't want to clutter up the user interface, but for whatever reason Safari doesn't offer favicons out of the box.

Enter Faviconographer . This third party program does one thing: add favicons to Safari. It's not perfect, but it works, and unlike other solutions for this, you don't even need to disable System Identity Protection .

Installing is simple: just download Faviconographer , open the DMG file, and then drag the icon to your Applications folder.

The first time you launch the program, you'll need to change some permissions so that Faviconographer can control your computer using accessibility features .

Click the button to head to the appropriate panel in System Preferences, click the lock at bottom left to allow changes, and then ensure that the "Faviconographer" option is enabled in the list.

And just like that, Faviconographer is set up. Open Safari and you should see the favicons.

Things get a little weird when you move or resize the window: the icons lag a little behind. And you won't see the icons at all when Safari isn't the active window. So yeah, it's not perfect, but it's better than nothing, and it's very light on system resources.

There isn't much in the way of settings.

You can display the favicons for tabs (enabled by default), and you can also add them to your Favorites Bar if you use that feature. There's also a checkbox for launching the app automatically when you log in.

Note also that there's no menu bar icon for this program. If you want to change settings, or quit the application, simply re-launch it---this open the settings window again.

iOS 12: How to enable favicons (site icons on tabs) in Safari

Jason Cross

For years, Safari has ignored one of the most useful tiny little features of modern web browsers: favicons. Those are the little site-specific icons that show up in browser tabs and bookmark lists to help you quickly identify sites.

In iOS 12 (and macOS Mojave ), favicons are finally supported in Safari! But you have to turn them on first. The feature is most useful for those who use the iPad or an Plus-sized iPhone, which show browser tabs in a single window, but you’ll see Favicons on your website “cards” in portrait orientation on an iPhone, too.

favicons ios12 ipad

Favicons—those little site icons on tabs—are most useful on iPads where you can see many tabs at once.

Enabling Favicons

To turn favicons on, open Settings . Scroll down to Safari and tap on that (it’s in the list of Apple apps). Scroll down to the General section and flip the switch next to Show Icons in Tabs .

That’s it! Now favicons will show up in your Safari tabs.

Troubleshooting, how to show website icons (favicons) in safari for ipad & iphone.

Website favorite icons in Safari for iOS

Website favorite icons can help to visually distinguish one website tab from another when looking at a crowd of Safari tabs, and in the latest versions of iOS you can now enable website favicons in Safari tabs for both iPhone and iPad.

This tutorial will show you how to quickly enable the display of website favorite icons (favicon) in the iOS Safari web browser for iPhone or iPad.

How to Show Favicons in Safari for iOS

  • Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone or iPad and then go to “Safari”
  • Locate ‘Show Icons in Tabs’ and toggle that switch to the ON position

How to show website favorite icons in Safari for iPhone or iPad

  • Return to Safari on the iPhone or iPad, if you have multiple tabs open you will now see the website icons appear along the tab name or site name

Website favorite icons in Safari for iOS

Enabling the display of website favicon in Safari for iPhone and iPad can make browsing through many tabs a bit quicker, since you may have learned to visually identify a particular favicon with a particular website. You also might appreciate the feature when searching through Safari tabs on iPad or iPhone , or when swiping through a large number of tabs at the top of the Safari browser window on iPad, or when viewing iCloud Safari Tabs .

Beyond that there isn’t much necessary, as the favorite icons will load automatically with all future websites, assuming they’re supported by that web page or web site. Favicons are included with most websites by default appearing as a little ‘favicon.ico’ file on the web server, and those favicon files exist on the site whether they are shown in Safari or not.

If you don’t have this setting available in your iOS Settings for Safari, it means you’re running an older version of iOS. Thus you can either update to a newer version of iOS (12.0 or later) or just do away with the feature. Many of the alternate web browsers for iOS also show favicon by default, including Chrome. This feature has been standard on many other web browsers for a long time but was not available in Safari for iOS or Mac until recently.

While the favicon visibility is desirable to some users, others may not like the feature since it can clutter up a tab bar with a lot of colors and icons, rather than simple text.

Of course you can hide the website favicons from Safari tabs in iOS again by returning to that Safari Setting and turning the feature back off.

How to disable website favicon display in Safari for iPad and iPhone

This is obviously for the iPhone and iPad, but you can also show website favicons in Safari on Mac if you’re running a modern version of MacOS too (10.14 or later).

How to Enable Safari Tab Favicons in macOS Ventura

Dennis Sellers

With macOS Mojave, Apple added support for favicons in Safari tabs — and that support continues in macOS Ventura. Favicons are those little icons that appear to a webpage’s title that let you quickly identify which of your open tabs is which.

Want to try it? With Safari open in the foreground on your Mac, click on “Safari” in the menu bar, and then click Settings.

Safari Settings

Select Tabs from the listed options in the top bar of Safari settings.

Select “Open pages in tabs instead of windows.” You can choose to have tabs displayed automatically, never, or always.

Open pages in tabs instead of windows

Exit the Settings window and you’ll see website favicons in Safari’s individual tabs.

No restart is needed — well, normally, anyway. If you aren’t seeing favicons, close and restart Safari.

If you decide you don’t like favicons in Safari, you can hide them again. To disable them:

Go to Safari > Settings

Click the Tabs tab at the top.

Select Show website icons in tabs.

Click “Open pages in tabs instead of windows” and choose Never.

Never open pages in tabs

Close the Safari Settings.

The favicons should have vanished.

By the way, opening pages in tabs instead of windows is the default setting on Safari in macOS Ventura.

A favicon (favorite icon) is a small icon that visualizes a website’s main purpose or identity in one little image. For example, this can be a tiny version of a website’s logo. Browsers, like Safari, may display a website’s favicon in the browser’s address bar. Safari provides favicon support.

I have the same problem with favicons in Safari on iOS as well as on macOS. It's a quite old bug and was present at least since iOS 14 if not earlier. Clearing caches does not help as far as I know. It's not a problem of the respective websites. The same show with correct icons in Firefox. It's just one of the numerous Safari bugs/annoyances that you just have to live with. I also think it's very irritating.

Still broken in iPadOS 15.5. Apple have totally lost their mojo.

  • Why Favicons in Safari Matter
