Solving the Case of the Mac’s Disappearing Scroll Bars
By J. D. Biersdorfer
- Feb. 2, 2017
Q. I recently switched to a Mac laptop, and the Safari browser confuses me. Sometimes it has scroll bars on the side of the page, and sometimes it doesn’t. Why is this?
A. In an attempt to streamline the user interface, Apple’s Safari browser for the Mac has scroll bars that can disappear from view if you are not actively scrolling through a web page. The company has been tinkering with desktop scrolling behavior for several years , and Safari’s behavior on the Mac is similar to the way it behaves in Apple’s iOS mobile operating system.
Scroll bars that disappear until they are needed make more sense on a mobile device with limited screen space than they do on a bigger screen navigated by mouse or track pad. Fortunately, you can change the scroll bar behavior for your programs in the Mac’s system preferences.
Click the System Preferences icon in the Mac’s desktop dock , or go to the Apple Menu and choose System Preferences. When the System Preferences box opens, click the General icon in the top row.
In the General box , go to the “Show scroll bars” section and click the button next to Always. Additionally, you can change what happens when you click in a scroll bar too, either jumping to the next page or to the area of the page where you clicked. (Before you close the preferences box, you can make other interface adjustments like changing the highlight color and increasing the sidebar icon size, among other things.)
If you do not like Safari, you can download another Mac-friendly browser like Google Chrome , Mozilla Firefox , Opera or Vivaldi . In most newer browsers, you can even use a keyboard shortcut to roll through a page — tap the space bar to scroll down, or hold down the Shift key and tap the space bar to reverse direction.

Hello, We visited your page from Chrome, and we are not able to see the issue. For us, the horizontal scroll works on the table on that page. You can download our Video from this link , and check how it looks. Did you perhaps do something to fix this in the meantime, maybe purged cache of the site, or something like that?
Kind regards.
Hello and thank you very much for your reply. I didn’t do anything more, I’m using Chrome for Mac, also tested on iMac and didn’t work either. However it works on Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge for all devices, except Chrome for these two.

Hello @elzbietajazviecka , Firstly, I would like to sincerely apologize for the delayed response as we have been experiencing an unusually high number of tickets. I am sorry that it has taken longer than usual to respond to your concern and your patience is highly appreciated. Thank you for the confirmation of the behaviour you noticed from your end. Can you please confirm what is the version of the operating system of your Mac device and iMac, and what is the Safari browser version?
Our developers always improve and optimize our plugin for the latest Safari version,
and at least two versions before, but if you might have an older one, for example if you have the Catalina Mac system, or Safari Version 13.1, then our tables will not properly render. If that is the case, can you please either update your system on your Mac device, or update your Safari version to any newer version, higher than 13.1, then purge cache and cookies from your browser, and this should be solved? Let us know if that helps, or if further troubleshooting is required. Thank you.

Horizontal Scroll not working on my safari browser
No error message is being shown This is an example page in datatables site even this is not working on my safari browser (13.1.2 (14609.3.5.1.5))
Your browser is actually wide enough there that horizontal scrolling isn’t required to show the whole table. Try making the browser window narrower and you should see it spring into action.

why does the scroll bar on safari disappear
Since the last security update on Safari, often when I use the back arrow to return to a previous page, the scroll bar disappears. I have checked System Preferences and the 'always show scroll bar' option is selected. I'm using macOS Monterey version 12.7.1 and Safari version 17.1. Thanks

- Lost scroll bar arrow When in a window the up/down scrolling bar will not show up unless I first hit the up or down arrow on the wireless Apple keyboard. Otherwise the scroll bar for up or down will not show and if I do not use it right away when it shows it will disappear again. It started shortly after I upgraded to Monterey 12.2.1 and was in Safari 15.3. 4584 6
- Safari unusably choppy scrolling after upgrade to macOS 12.1 Hi, Ever since I upgraded to macOS 12.1, Safari (15.2) is basically unusuable. It often takes anywhere between half a second and a full second until scrolling has any effect, regardless of whether I use the mouse or the keyboard. I don't use any extensions. CPU and memory usage is normal. I tried deleting all history and site data to no avail. It doesn't seem to matter what site I'm on. Has anyone seen this and found a solution? 736 2
- Safari scrolling is not smooth When browsing websites (any website) on Safari, the scrolling with trackpad / mouse / scrollbar is not smooth. There is a noticeable stutter. This does not happen when using Chrome, where the scrolling is buttery smooth. Is this normal behaviour, or is there something that can be done to fix this? I am running Safari 14.0.2, on Big Sur 11.1 (latest update), on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) with Intel Core i7 Quad-Core. This problem has been persistent through multiple versions of Safari and OS. 789 2

I submitted a bug report (FB13327951) to Apple about this on November 9th. It's still an issue with Safari 17.2 as of today (December 17). I'm using macOS 13.6.1.
Everyone experiencing this bug should file a bug report using the Feedback Assistant (Applications -> Utilities -> Feedback Assistant).

Sadly this is still an issue (January 22) as of Safari version 17.3 (18617.2.4.11.9, 18617) under macOS 13.6.4.

Updating to macOS 14 resolves the issue. It's a shame Apple hasn't fixed Safari 17 to work correctly on older versions of macOS.

4. Hi I made this site a while ago in my table days but have just realised the horizontal scrolling dive doesn't work in Safari. overflow-x:scroll ; overflow-y:hidden; overflow:-moz-scrollbars-horizontal !important; height:138px; width:360px;
Apple silicon. 1.) Shut down your Mac. 2.) Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. 3.) Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking "Continue in Safe Mode.". 4.)
Click the image, then if you see a magnifying glass with a + in it when you hover your cursor over the letters, click again so it goes beyond your window size [or repeatedly tap Cmd ⌘ + until it no longer fits the window]. Hold Shift & scroll mouse wheel. It would be interesting to know if this affects trackpads too, but I don't have one to test.
Safari back scroll ( double finger swipe) Hey, I am using a Macbook pro m1. I am quite used to the double finger swipe to go back to the previous page on safari. Recently l, I found out that, while using Safari, I can only do the swipe while I am on the top of the webpage. If I scrolled down to middle, or the end, it will not work.
No it is not. I have an Mx Master and the horizontal scroll wheel does not switch between tabs in Safari and Chrome. Instead it horizontally scrolls the web page. Make sure you have selected "all applications" in the logi options and set the thumb scroll wheel to "horizontal scroll". If that doesnt work try reinstalling the logi options toll. -
Open Safari on your Mac. In the Menu Bar, click Safari. From the drop-down menu, click Settings. Click the Extensions tab at the top of the Settings window. Locate any of the extensions that are enabled. Click the corresponding checkbox next to the extensions or ad blockers to turn them off. Close and restart Safari.
19. The issue was that I was using Mos to enable smooth scrolling on my Mac. However, it removes the ability to scroll horizontally using the shift key by default. To reenable this behavior, go to Mos Settings > Advanced and then select "Shift" as the horizontal scrolling key. That should do it! Thank you!
First of all, it does not work in my Firefox 47 (Windows 10 x86_64). Second, as much as many of us would like to expect that the rendering of things like select elements only is done using CSS rules, it is not so and different browsers render them differently -- there is no cross browser requirement as to how select elements should be rendered exactly.

Easiest way to do this, Make sure to have Safari and Logi Options + open. On Logi Options, click on your mouse, you should see the safari logo on the upper top right of the Logi Options Window.
