Wild Earth: African Safari

Wild Earth: African Safari

Explore the wild and capture its natural beauty on film in Wild Earth: African Safari, a unique simulation for Wii.  Playing the role of photographer, your mission is to take award-winning pictures of exotic animals in their natural habitats without disturbing them. There are 11 picture-taking missions in which you’ll investigate the bold hyena during a midday thunderstorm, observe gentle giraffes in the hidden valley from the aerial view of a helicopter and meet a family of elephants as they take care of their young. In all, you’ll meet more than 30 animals that call Africa home.

Taking the perfect picture isn’t easy. An animal’s keen sense will detect you when you get too close. The Impact Meter tracks how much of a disturbance you are to the natural habitat, and if you disturb too many animals or get too close to them, your Wii Remote will rumble at varying degrees, making it harder to take a steady picture. If the Impact Meter becomes completely depleted, you fail the mission.

The photos you take are collected in an animated slideshow presentation of informative articles. In addition, players can select their own favourite photos to keep in their portfolio.

From running with herds of zebra to following hunting lions and scavenging vultures, Wild Earth: African Safari lets you risk it all to capture and create magazine-quality pictorials!

  • The Safari Mini-Game mode lets you use the Wii Remote to also play from the animal’s perspective in 11 different games.
  • Cooperative Multi-player mode gives players the choice to drive the vehicle or snap photos while playing with up to three friends.
  • Experience accurately presented flora and terrain from the Serengeti National Park in Africa, at different times of day and in varied weather. Grasses, shrubs, flowers, kopjes (rocky outcroppings), streams and lakes provide a life-like experience and terrific photo opportunities.

Why DolphiniOS’s Wii and GameCube emulator isn’t coming to the App Store

Apple won’t allow dolphinios to use the just-in-time compiler, which improves the performance of games..

DolphiniOS, a fork of the popular Dolphin emulator for Nintendo Wii and GameCube games, has confirmed that it’s not coming to the Apple App Store even though emulators are now supported. In a post on Friday , the developer behind the emulator says it’s because Apple doesn’t allow DolphiniOS to use its underlying performance-boosting tech.

As explained by developer OatmealDome, DolphiniOS — along with other Wii and GameCube emulators — uses something called Just-in-Time (JIT). This is a compiler that “translates” the GameCube and Wii’s PowerPC-based code into a language other devices can understand, making emulations run a lot smoother.

But Apple doesn’t allow third-party apps to use JIT compilers, as noted by OatmealDome. “The only exceptions are Safari and alternative web browsers in Europe,” the developer writes. “We submitted a DMA [Digital Markets Act] interoperability request to Apple for JIT support, but Apple denied the request a few weeks ago.”

Although there’s a way to get around JIT by using an “interpreter,” OatmealDome writes that it’s “many times slower than the JIT compiler.” A pair of videos shared by OatmealDome shows just how poorly a Mario Kart Wii emulation performs on an iPhone 15 when using an interpreter instead of JIT . The Verge reached out to Apple with a request for more information about its rules surrounding JIT but didn’t immediately hear back.

Since Apple loosened its policies on retro game emulators earlier this month, we’ve already seen the game emulator Delta shoot to the top of the App Store charts . There will likely be much more to come — provided they don’t get removed first .

Here’s why GameCube and Wii emulators might not come to the App Store

Jacob Siegal

On Friday, April 5, Apple upended years of precedent by updating its App Review Guidelines to allow retro game emulators on the App Store. Less than two weeks later, Riley Testut made his popular Delta emulator available on the App Store , bringing emulation of NES, Game Boy, N64, and DS games to the iPhone. Delta is likely just the beginning of a huge wave of iOS emulation apps, but you shouldn’t hold your breath for modern Nintendo consoles.

First and foremost, it’s worth noting that Dolphin is the most popular and capable open-source emulator for GameCube and Wii games. The app is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, but developer OatmealDome created a fork for iOS in 2019 . Currently, the only way to download it is by jailbreaking an iPhone or using the AltStore .

So, now that AltStore has officially launched as a third-party app store in the EU and retro game emulators are allowed on the App Store, where is DolphiniOS?

Therefore, if we want to run a GameCube or Wii game on an iPhone, it is necessary to translate the game’s PowerPC code to ARM so that the CPU can understand it,” explained OatmealDome. “Dolphin uses something called a Just-in-Time (JIT) recompiler to achieve this. Whenever the emulated console wants to run game code, Dolphin will use its JIT to translate the PowerPC code to ARM, and then execute the results.”

OatmealDome notes that it is possible to run DolphiniOS without JIT by using an interpreter. But here’s what it looks like running on an iPhone 15 Pro Max:

The GameCube game looks virtually unplayable, so there wouldn’t be much point in releasing it. On the other hand, here’s the same phone running DolphiniOS with JIT enabled:

Unless Apple changes its mind about restricting the usage of JIT recompilers, GameCube and Wii emulation is basically dead in the water. As thrilled as Nintendo might be about that, it’s a bummer for fans of retro emulation. That said, the fact that Apple allows emulators at all is still pretty shocking, so who knows what will happen next?

Running late —

Why a gamecube/wii emulator may not be possible on the ios app store, dolphinios dev says barring just-in-time compilation prevents playable performance..

Kyle Orland - Apr 22, 2024 4:21 pm UTC

Don't expect to see this on the iOS App Store any time soon.

Further Reading

In a recent blog post , DolphiniOS developer (and longtime Switch hacker ) OatmealDome explains how a Dolphin code fork —which ports the popular GameCube and Wii emulator to Apple's smartphone OS—uses just-in-time (JIT) compilation to translate the PowerPC instructions from those retro consoles into ARM-compatible iOS code. But Apple's App Store regulations against apps that "install executable code" (Section 3.3.1B) generally prevent JIT recompilation on iOS , with very limited exceptions such as web browsers. That restriction may have some valid security reasoning behind it , but it can also get in the way for developers of tools like third-party browser engines ( except recently in the EU ).

While MacOS developers can make use of an explicit entitlement to allow JIT recompilation in an app, that exception doesn't apply to iOS developers. And while alternative App Stores and sideloaded apps (including DolphiniOS) have discovered various ways to enable JIT compilation on both jailbroken and stock iOS devices, these workarounds can get quite arcane and occasionally break with new iOS releases .

OatmealDome asked for an exception to Apple's JIT restrictions under the European DMA , but "Apple denied the request a few weeks ago."

Why JIT is needed

GameCube and Wii emulators like Dolphin are technically possible without JIT recompilation, of course; a simple interpreter can also translate the PowerPC code without the need for full recompilation. But OatmealDome writes that the processing overhead involved means "unfortunately, the interpreter is many times slower than the JIT recompiler." As evidence, OatmealDome shared video of "interpreted" GameCube emulation running unplayably slowly on an iPhone 15 Pro Max and contrasted it with footage of a JIT-recompiled example that easily runs at full speed.

"While we could submit DolphiniOS to the App Store with just the interpreter, we would likely get endless complaints from users about the poor performance," OatmealDome wrote. "App Review might also just reject us anyway because the app is unusable."

It's also worth mentioning that Apple's recent App Store opening for game emulation only specifically mentions "retro game console emulators," without clarifying a specific cutoff for what makes a console "retro." Without getting too in the weeds on that contentious semantic debate , we highly suspect that the Wii, which launched nearly 18 years ago , would fit under even the strictest "retro" definition Apple might want to enforce.

It doesn't look like GameCube and Wii emulators are coming to the App Store

Sorry Nintendo fans, it doesn't look good

A close view of the Nintendo Wii console

In the last week, the iOS world has shifted. Retro game emulators have started launching and actually sticking around thanks to an Apple policy change.

The launch and subsequent success of the Delta emulator have led people to wonder whether the beloved GameCube and Wii emulator DolphiniOS (a popular fork of Dolphin) could make its way to Apple's mobile platform. Unfortunately, according to the app's developer (via 9To5Mac ), it doesn't look like it will happen.

"Apple still does not allow us to use a vital technology that is necessary for Dolphin to run with good performance: JIT," said the developer in a blog post .

The developer continued, "The GameCube and Wii have a PowerPC-based CPU inside them. All modern Apple devices use an ARM-based CPU. It isn't possible to directly run PowerPC code on an ARM CPU, and vice versa. Therefore, if we want to run a GameCube or Wii game on an iPhone, it is necessary to translate the game's PowerPC code to ARM so that the CPU can understand it."

Just-in-Time (JIT) is required to get around the PowerPC-based to ARM-based CPU translation. Without it, it appears to be impossible to run DolphiniOS. Unless another developer can come up with a miraculous solution, it's unlikely that we'll see other GameCube or Wii emulators make their way to the App Store.

"Dolphin uses something called a Just-in-Time (JIT) recompiler to achieve this. Whenever the emulated console wants to run game code, Dolphin will use its JIT to translate the PowerPC code to ARM, and then execute the results," explained the developer.

It's not due to a lack of effort on the DolphiniOS team, either. "We submitted a DMA interoperability request to Apple for JIT support, but Apple denied the request a few weeks ago," said the team regarding its attempt to get access to JIT support.

At this point, without direct comment from Apple, it's hard to know why the company doesn't allow JIT. "It's possible that they consider it to be a security risk," said the DolphiniOS developer.

The developer did acknowledge that it is technically possible to run DolphiniOS without JIT, thanks to an interpreter that runs the PowerPC code. However, performance suffers substantially. In fact, the performance is so bad that the games are almost unplayable, even on a top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max , as shown in the videos below.

"While we could submit DolphiniOS to the App Store with just the interpreter, we would likely get endless complaints from users about the poor performance. App Review might also just reject us anyway because the app is unusable," said the developer to round out the blog post, killing the hopes of GameCube and Wii fans everywhere.

Another potential issue could come from Apple's requirement that the emulators on the App Store be considered retro . You could argue that the GameCube is a retro console, but saying the Wii, which came out in 2006, is retro would be a stretch.

DolphiniOS explains why GameCube and Wii emulator won’t be in the App Store

Avatar for Zac Hall

Apple recently changed its policy to allow game emulators on the App Store. Delta, one of the essential emulation apps, skyrocketed to the top of the App Store overnight. Another popular emulator called DolphiniOS, however, is still facing a policy road block.

DolphiniOS explains in a blog post that Apple’s resistance to apps using JIT means the App Store is still out of reach for now.

The GameCube and Wii have a PowerPC-based CPU inside them. All modern Apple devices use an ARM-based CPU. It isn’t possible to directly run PowerPC code on an ARM CPU, and vice versa. Therefore, if we want to run a GameCube or Wii game on an iPhone, it is necessary to translate the game’s PowerPC code to ARM so that the CPU can understand it.
