Fantastic historic building, filthy... - Santa Fe Depot

  • San Diego - Things to Do
  • Santa Fe Depot

Fantastic historic building, filthy toilets.

The building itself is grand as most of the old Union stations throughout the US seem to be. Also good for the metro trolley service, and the Amtrak service is very handy and economical. Two complaints though: The male and female toilets are filthy, lack some doors on cubicles, faulty soap dispensers and seem to permit hobos access, even though signed as for Santa Fe Depot passengers' use only. The Amtrak staff are inconsistent in the application of their baggage policies as one 'officer' targeted our group regarding baggage size, but allowed many other passengers with similar sized baggage to board unchallenged. It was not enough to make an issue of, but be aware they are not even-handed with the rules.

Used the green line Trolly during Comic-con. Stopped at the Sante Fe Depot to eat lunch. The Trolly made getting around San Diego so much easier so will we be using it every time we come back to visit.

While Downtown San Diego continues to build and build and build new skyscrapers that I detest, "Santa Fe Depot" stands out as a "Jewel" that reflects the San Diego of past and present while moving into the future. As a young kid growing up in the San Diego area in the 1970's, Amtrak trains ended at Santa Fe Depot and we would pick up Grandma and family from L.A. / To add, when I was young I enjoyed taking the train from Santa Fe Depot to L.A. Union Station (another "Jewel" of a train station in SoCal) and not flying PSA!!! (Though I liked that too!! Haha) I strongly advise to go around, look and see the fine tiles decorated that are dated back to the early 20th Century. It's a beauty of a train station that's proudly shows it's heritage while moving ahead into the 21st Century by representing a changing public transportation hub - the southernmost terminus point for Amtrak "Surfliner" Trains, Coaster and MTS (S.D. Trolley). I'll be taking Amtrak down for MY Padres after Comic-Con. See ya @ Santa Fe Depot! FIVE CLAWS HIGH!!!!! Joe G. Bear

This is the ticketing office for Amtrak. Helpful staff and lovely old building. Catch green trolley here to go to Old Town and Fashion Valley. The Coaster also leaves from here to get to Oceanside

Beautiful old structure and absolutely homogenous to downtown waterfront San Diego. Juxtaposed amongst the tall mixed use high rises and luxury high rise apartments with just enough glimpse of the blue pacific and of course the just as old date palms of this area. Fully functional train station and hub for all rail travel in and out of Dan Diego. Simple and courteous staff and prompt professional help everywhere. The way train travel should always be and as i have always enjoyed! I loved the old smokers!!

This is full of great stories and legends of San Diego, fun place to visit for locals, tourists and kids love trains!

6,000+ free low-flow toilets installed for local residents.

January 04, 2024

Grant funds still available to help qualifying residents, under-represented communities

More than 6,000 high-efficiency toilets have been installed free of charge for income-qualifying residents and those in under-represented communities across the region through a grant-funded program run by the San Diego County Water Authority.

Funds remain to replace about 4,000 more outdated toilets with professionally installed, high- efficiency models at no cost to mobile home communities, multi-family units and income qualifying single-family homes. Smart irrigation controllers are also available at no cost through the program. To be eligible, participants must be residential customers within the Water Authority’s service area. Learn more and apply at  Direct Install Program.

“This is a great way for residents to get a free home upgrade that both conserves water and saves on water bills,” said Mel Katz, chair of the Water Authority’s Board of Directors. “Water affordability is a top priority for the Water Authority, and this program is one of many ways we are combatting inflationary pressures on water prices.”

Over the last two years, the Water Authority helped secure $25 million to cover overdue residential water bills resulting from the economic impacts of COVID-19. In addition, the Water Authority also operates an industry-leading asset management program designed to avoid the extreme costs of emergency repairs on large-scale water pipelines. And, the agency is advocating in Washington, D.C., for federal funds to defray the cost of generational upgrades to local dams and reservoirs.

Through the Direct Install Program, toilets that use 1.6 gallons or more per flush are replaced with premium, high-efficiency models that use half the water. The program is entirely funded by more than $4 million in grants from the California Department of Water Resources’ Integrated Regional Water Management and Urban Community Drought Relief programs, and through Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

The San Diego County Water Authority sustains a $268 billion regional economy and the quality of life for 3.3 million residents through a multi-decade water supply diversification plan, major infrastructure investments and forward-thinking policies that promote fiscal and environmental responsibility. A public agency created in 1944, the Water Authority delivers wholesale water supplies to 23 retail water providers, including cities, special districts and a military base.

Your toilet installation or replacement questions, answered, how much does it cost to install a toilet.

Toilet installation costs $350 to $800 on average for the toilet and professional installation. Toilet prices alone start as low as $100 for a basic two-piece unit to as high as $20,000+ for the most high-end smart model with all the bells and whistles.

If you’re DIY-savvy, replacing a toilet yourself can save $150 to $900+ on labor. However, hiring a professional ensures the job is done correctly, safely, and up to code.

How long does it take to install a toilet?

Toilet installation takes 2 to 3 hours on average when hiring a professional. If you’re installing a wall-hung toilet or a toilet in a completely new location, installation can take 4 to 6+ hours due to the extra plumbing and drywall work needed.

How long do toilets last?

While some toilets last 50+ years, the average lifespan of most toilets is 10 to 20 years . Some parts, such as the chain, flapper, and wax seal may need replacing before that 10-year mark. Consider replacing an older toilet even if it’s still functioning, as today’s models are much more efficient and cost less to run.

How long after installation can a toilet be used?

You can technically use a toilet right after installation. However, most professionals recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours for the sealants to dry completely. Some caulking dries in just a few hours, while other types take 24+ hours to cure and dry, so it’s best to confirm the correct wait time with your installer.

How do I choose a toilet installation company near me?

With the many plumbers and plumbing service companies available, follow these guidelines to help you find the best toilet installation service near you:

  • Compare 3 to 5 toilet installation estimates with similar details.
  • Choose a licensed, insured, and bonded plumbing service with high ratings on HomeGuide and Google.
  • Avoid going with the cheapest installation estimate as this may signal low-quality work.
  • Ask for a detailed contract and warranty in writing before the installation begins.
  • Don't pay in full until the job is complete.

What questions should I ask when getting estimates for toilet installation?

Asking the right questions will help you choose the best plumber for your new toilet installation:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Is your company licensed, insured, and bonded?
  • What experience do you have installing this type of toilet?
  • How quickly can you install the toilet?
  • Can you provide references with contact information?
  • Does the estimate include removing the old toilet and disposing of it?
  • Is your quote based on an hourly rate or is it a flat fee for this service?
  • What other costs might come up during the installation?
  • How long should we wait to use the toilet after installation?
  • Do you offer a warranty, and what does it cover?
  • Do you submit the manufacturer’s warranty registration?

Toilet repair & installation.

There’s no denying that toilets are an indispensable part of the bathroom. In fact, they’re the most utilized feature — something that also makes them easily overlooked, except when they start causing trouble, and you desperately need someone to do the toilet repair.

If you’re experiencing problems with your toilet, such as clogging, lack of flushing power, leaking, continuous running, or clogging, you need to call professional plumbers immediately.

San Diego Plumbing and Pipelining is your reliable go-to partner for everything plumbing-related. This includes providing toilet repair services, as well as installation and replacement — all available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

toilet repair

Some of the most common toilet toilet-related concerns of customers include:

Toilet clogging

One of the top bathroom plumbing problems is the clogged toilet . When that happens, your toilet is basically rendered useless.

And while minor clogs are problems you may be able to handle on your own, a clog that won’t go away or one which leads to toilet overflow needs the attention of a toilet repair specialist. It could be anything, such as being overloaded with hair, toilet paper, and non-flushable objects that need to be cleared ASAP. Or, it may also be that you already have an aged system that needs replacement.

As mentioned, San Diego Plumbing and Pipelining plumbers are available 24/7. Aside from being able to efficiently address clogging problems, they are also experts in restoring total drainage and correct flushing pressure. They are equipped to solve a host of toilet-related issues, like damaged tanks and bowls, as well as leaking and running toilets.

So, please get in touch with San Diego Plumbing and Pipelining right away for your toilet-related concerns.

Leaky toilet

A toilet can start leaking externally for any number of reasons, and it doesn’t always mean that the entire system needs to be replaced. Some common causes of a leaky toilet include:

  • Condensation: Before concluding that your toilet is leaking, check if there’s any condensation caused by a humid bathroom environment. This is especially apparent during and after a shower, where condensation forms and may start dripping from your toilet. If this the case, it’s not really a problem you should worry about.
  • Cracked tank or bowl: Although toilets are built to last for a long time (up to 50 years!), the usual wear and tear of daily use can take its toll, especially in the 25-year mark. If you see hairline cracks anywhere, let your plumber know as these tend to grow bigger with the passage of time.
  • Damaged or rusty pipes: Old pipes are known to get corroded, rusted, or damaged, and eventually develop cracks that lead to water leaking around your toilet.
  • Loose or worn tank-to-bowl assembly: Your tank and bowl are securely held together by an assembly of gaskets, nuts, and bolts. But if any of these parts is damaged, worn, or loose, your toilet can start leaking.
  • Loose or worn sealing: Your toilet is kept in place at the floor with special parts and sealing material. If there’s anything amiss in this area, you may notice water pooling around the base due to a leak.

A leaky toilet is not only a major inconvenience but it can also cost you in terms of high water bills. Don’t wait for the problem to get worse — call San Diego Plumbing and Pipelining immediately.

Our expert plumbers will identify the cause of the problem and fix it for you. They’ll also let you know whether you need a complete toilet replacement.

Running toilet

An efficiently running toilet automatically stops flushing out water into the bowl once the water reaches a set level. But a toilet that won’t stop running can lead to substantial water waste (as much as 200 gallons per day!), so toilet repair is immediately required.

A toilet that won’t stop running may have any of the following common issues:

  • Worn-out flapper: The flapper is that part of the tank which prevents the water from going to the bowl when flushing is not activated. If this part is damaged or worn, water will start leaking into the bowl which is when you get a running toilet.
  • Misadjusted flush valve assembly: The flush valve assembly is that part of the system which regulates when water is released into the bowl (activated by flushing). If there is any problem in the flush valve assembly, it can cause the water to reach the overflow valve, thereby leading to water running continuously and leaking.

Other possible though less common causes of a running toilet include an old or corroded toilet handle, or problems with specific parts such as the flapper chain, fill valve, and overflow valve.

An expert plumber can easily diagnose the cause of the problem and fix it either by replacing or repairing the damaged or worn section or part.

Toilet installation and replacement

A lot of customers assume that they can DIY toilet installation work. However, having seen the consequences of faulty or poor installation through the years, we beg to differ.

Toilet installation and replacement are both time-consuming and difficult, as both require substantial plumbing work. So, if you have a new bathroom, want to upgrade, or replace an old, worn-out system, better leave the work to professionals to avoid what could be complicated and expensive problems from cropping up down the line.

Whatever the case, a reputable plumbing contractor will not only provide the work needed to correctly install a new toilet, but also give advice on improvements you may want to consider.

New toilet technology is available, and this gives customers tremendous opportunities to go green and start saving water and energy, while also enjoying the conveniences innovation brings.

Our plumbing technicians will check if the water is running efficiently, and if everything is working as it should. They’ll ensure that your new system is attractive, comfortable, and easy to use for everyone in your household.

For any toilet-related issues or concerns, please contact us today! .

We’re available 24/7, and always happy to help.

Low-income in San Diego? You could get a new toilet for free

A worker prepares a low-flow toilet for install.

San Diego County Water Authority is installing low-flow toilets in low-income San Diego homes for free.

Many conventional toilets use 1.6 gallons of water or more per flush.

If it’s running between flushes, it could be wasting up to 200 gallons an hour. Over four days, that’s enough to fill a swimming pool.

“It'll be quiet. And then all of a sudden you'll hear that tank fill again. And when you hear that, it's not a ghost. It's your toilet flapper,” program director Debby Dunn said.

Dunn said she was very passionate about toilets, evidenced by the toilet earrings dangling from her earlobes.

The program has installed 6,000 new low-flow toilets in low-income San Diego homes so far, and has funds for 4,000 more.

The goal is to save those homes water and money.

“Toilets with old flappers are more likely to run,” Dunn said. “We're upgrading toilets in a lot of multifamily and single-family homes that may be 20 years or older.”

Dunn said the new toilets were cutting some households’ water use — and bills — in half.

For those who don’t qualify, Dunn said, there is still something they can do to stop flushing water and money down the drain — something she called “the toilet test.”

Put a couple drops of food coloring in the back of the toilet tank. Wait 15 to 20 minutes without using or flushing the toilet. If the toilet bowl changes color, the flapper — that moving seal at the bottom of the tank — is not sealing well.

It might be as easy as putting in a new, quality flapper, Dunn said.

If a new toilet is needed and residents don’t qualify for Dunn’s program, rebates are available for high-efficiency toilets.

To learn more and apply for the program visit the program website or call 888-272-8394 .

Chariot Restrooms Latest Reviews

"We used the bathroom for our daughter’s Quinceanera which we had in our backyard. It was so nice not having everyone have to come in the house to use the bathroom. They were so clean and everyone loved the music inside. We got a lot of compliments on how nice they were from guests. Simon was so nice and great to work with."

Shannon Kelso

"My husband and I used this companys service for our outdoor wedding. We were extremely pleased with the His & Hers restrooms. They were very clean, with AC, had music and was fully stocked. Much nicer than we expected. We highly recommend Chariot Restrooms. Simon and his wife were a pleasure to work with."

"We hired Chariot Restrooms for our large wedding, which was held at a private home. They were great! It worked out very well and the attendant we hired as an add-on to staff the event received many accolades from our guests for being friendly and efficient. The restrooms look great inside and the attendant kept them clean and stocked. The management team was excellent to work with and they even did a site visit to check the venue to see what size trailer would work and what placement would be best. Most definitely recommend!"

Kristen Burnell Alvi

"We hired Chariot Restrooms to provide additional facilities for our wedding and they were great! Communication was easy and as far as I know, drop off and pick up happened without a problem. The bathrooms were clean and quite nice! The only problem that I noticed is that one of the vacant/occupied indicators didn’t work, but it wasn’t a big problem. I’d recommend them!"

Camille Merose

"Simon, Katy and Mark were an absolute pleasure to work with! From the planning process to execution! Our guests were thrilled to have such an elevated restroom experience, we will be recommending them to all of our friends and clients!!!"

"I had the pleasure of working with Simon and he and his partner were nothing short of amazing. We used their facilities for an entire year and it could not have gone any smoother! First of all they are the super fancy kind of portable bathrooms complete with baseboards, fancy trimming, a radio and everything! What really made this a phenomenal experience was Simon and his team. Whenever we had a problem, he would be there within the hour - if not in 15 mins. We needed to move the bathrooms at one point and he was super communicative and worked with our schedules to make the move as seamless as possible. If you're looking for a portable bathroom, look no further! Book Chariot Restrooms for your next event, you won't be disappointed."

Toilet to Tap: Wastewater Purification Plant Now Supplying Drinking Water to Oceanside

The same sort of project is being planned for east county and san diego city, by audra stafford and karla rendon-alvarez • published march 22, 2022 • updated on march 22, 2022 at 6:07 pm.

An Oceanside water purification facility made history on Tuesday as what is being celebrated as San Diego County’s first wastewater treatment plant to go online.

A grand opening was held for Pure Water Oceanside, which turns wastewater into clean drinking water using state-of-the-art technology. By pumping the recycled water into pipes and purifying it, the treatment plant makes it safe for residents to consume and use it.

The $70 million project took 10 years of planning and construction before going online. And although it’s the first of its kind in the county, the City of Oceanside’s Water Utilities Director said this technology has been around for some time already.

The director added that anyone who has had water at Disneyland has already tried a similar water supply.

Once the clean water leaves the facility, it will be injected into the Mission Basin. There, it’ll stay for up to six months before being drawn out from the aquifer and treated again at the city's Mission Basin Groundwater Purification Facility. Following that procedure, the water will be ready for distribution.

Dale said the new treatment plant will eventually create 3 to 5 million gallons per day of local drinking water and could reduce Oceanside’s reliance on imported water by an estimated 20%. If all goes according to plan, the clean water could be ready for residents by this summer.

The same sort of project is being planned for East County and San Diego city -- the East County Advanced Water Purification Program and Pure Water San Diego, respectively.

The East County Advanced Water Purification Program plans to provide residents with 30% of its local water supply by 2025. Officials will vote on advancing the construction phase of the project on May 19. The plan would produce 11.5 million gallons of water a day.

The Pure Water San Diego program will be able to output 30 million gallons a day by 2025 and an additional 53 million gallons a day by 2035.

An exception is the Timken Museum of Art, where you can admire French tapestries, Russian icons and paintings by various European artists, including Rembrandt. It’s free to explore Balboa Park’s themed gardens, which include the Alcazar Garden (inspired by the royal gardens of Seville), the Japanese Friendship Garden and the Australian Garden. See more plants—orchids, ferns and seasonal species—in the oft-photographed Botanical Building, constructed for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park: Revisit a bygone era at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where the Mexican and early American periods of the city’s history are palpable. This free site features an assemblage of buildings-turned-museums, including reconstructions as well as authentic abodes from the 19th century. The latter includes La Casa de Estudillo, a home on the National Register of Historic Places that belonged to an affluent local family. It won’t cost you anything to explore the site, on your own or on one of the daily guided tours, though you may be tempted to reach for your wallet at the sight of the old-fashioned candy or traditional Mexican pottery in the shops. Restaurants on site serve Mexican fare should you get hungry.

Beaches: San Diego’s 30 diverse beaches—70 miles of coastline in all—are free to the public, and you can expect a different experience at each one. Devote a day to snorkeling in the clear waters of La Jolla Cove, where you may catch a glimpse of the garibaldi, California’s colorful state fish. Spend the following day observing the resident sea lions at the seawall-protected beach known as Children’s Pool. Head to Pacific Beach to surf, or let your pooch frolic in the sand at Ocean Beach, which is also great for exploring tide pools.

Mission Bay Park: You’ll find 19 more miles of sandy beach at San Diego’s Mission Bay Park, a carnival-like recreational area reminiscent of New York’s Coney Island. The 4,600-acre park is roughly equal parts land and water, and there are no fees to surf, bike, walk along the boardwalk or build a bonfire by the ocean. Mission Bay is also home to Belmont Park, an amusement park where admission and parking are free; you only pay for your rides. Don’t pass up the thrilling Giant Big Dipper, a wooden roller coaster circa 1925 that has earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mount Soledad: A clear day in San Diego is the perfect excuse to drive to the top of 823-foot Mount Soledad, a prominent landmark in the neighborhood of La Jolla. You may opt to bike up instead, but be prepared for a challenge; the ride is ranked as moderate to difficult, regardless of the route you take. Once you’ve made it to the peak, the reward is the same: 360-degrees of breathtaking view. The vistas encompass the Pacific Ocean and downtown San Diego, and extend as far as the mountains of neighboring Mexico. Linger until sundown to witness a spectacular sunset. Atop the mountain, you’ll also encounter a 29-foot cross—a memorial to the country’s veterans.

Pier Fishing: Whether you’re a seasoned angler or looking forward to casting your line for the first time, you’ll be happy to know that no license is required to fish from any of the seven municipal piers in San Diego that allow the sport. As long as you own a fishing pole, you can try your hand at angling without spending a dime. If you wish to purchase supplies, choose piers that offer bait and tackle shops, such as Ocean Beach Pier, the West Coast’s longest pier, which is also considered the longest concrete pier in the world. The fish you might catch in San Diego’s inland waters include bass, barracuda and halibut.
