Sam Smith review, O2 Arena: Years of self-discovery culminate in this sultry, sparkly show

Queer celebration is in the air at smith’s third arena tour, as the non-binary star steps into a sexier persona – thigh-high boots, nipple clamps and all, article bookmarked.

Sam Smith is no stranger to performing in front of thousands – tens of thousands, even. Still, one might imagine it’s a task that’s infinitely more daunting for someone wearing an outfit of nipple clamps, leather briefs, and thigh-high platform boots. Yet as the 30-year-old stomps across the O2 Arena stage, cherubic cheeks rosy as they grin, there’s no hint of fear. Instead, there’s a playful glint in their eyes and a defiant expression of pride on their face. “Did I say something wrong? Oops, I didn’t know I couldn’t talk about sex,” they tease in a cover of Madonna’s 1995 self-expression anthem “Human Nature”. Smith knows that people will talk – and from the looks of things, that’s exactly the point.

Born in London, Smith was raised in the Cambridgeshire village of Great Chishill, where they performed in youth choirs and musical theatre groups. After releasing some early tracks in their late teens, 20-year-old Smith got their first taste of mainstream attention after providing the irresistible vocals for Disclosure’s hit song “Latch” in 2012. From there, the road to stardom was paved. Their 2014 debut album, In the Lonely Hour , was a global success, earning Smith four Grammys and securing their status as a household name. But recent years have seen the musician transition away from the strait-laced, desexed image of their young career. In 2019, Smith announced their non-binary identity. Since then, they have embraced queerness in their music and in their dress, experimenting across gender lines with fashion and make-up. Tonight feels like the culmination of those years of self-discovery.

Entering the stage to their most successful hit, the swoony ballad “Stay with Me”, Smith reminds us of their undeniable vocal talent. On other early tracks, such as “I’m Not the Only One” and “Like I Can”, their voice is soulful and commanding. Standing corset-clad in front of a large gold statue of a reclining body, Smith addresses their fans for the first time. “I have to make a shout-out to any kids in the audience right now who want to do this and be on stage and sing: you can do it,” they say sincerely, recalling the many occasions when they sat in the crowd yearning for the same. And with that, Smith invites the audience on a 90-minute personal celebration of freedom, split into three segments: love, beauty, and sex.

“I know it’s Tuesday and the week has just begun, but I need you to turn this place into a gay bar with me, can you do that?” For someone with a catalogue filled with yearnful, heart-sick ballads, Smith is surprisingly at home performing the evening’s upbeat house tracks. Their 2018 Calvin Harris collaboration, “Promises”, and “Latch” are highlights that have the audience jumping up and down, rave-style. Admittedly, Smith’s vocal talent far outweighs their dancing skills, but that doesn’t stop them from enthusiastically joining in with some of the choreography.

The evening’s most poignant moment arrives with Smith’s cover of the Des’ree track “Kissing You”. Smith takes the stage, donning a green maxidress and a halo adorned with the name of transgender teen Brianna Ghey, who was stabbed to death in February. It’s a simple but touching acknowledgement of the brutality that queer people continue to face.

  • John Legend review, Royal Albert Hall: This no-frills, intimate concert shows the singer at his best
  • Elton John review, O2 Arena: A dazzling, emotional goodbye from one of history’s greatest showmen
  • Lizzo review, O2 Arena: Pop powerhouse proves she’s a musician for the ages

Smith does not linger for long in sadness, though. Soon, we’re back in their gay bar, with dancers writhing to their tracks “Gimme” and “Lose You”. Finally, we come to the segment that has previously had onlookers clutching their pearls. “This is the climax, let’s ignite,” a voiceover declares, introducing the show’s “sex” chapter. Smith appears under a golden light, draped entirely in white fabric for the tour’s choral title track, “Gloria” – yet before we know it, the virgin bride moment is over. Suddenly, Smith strips off to underwear and boots for a raucous rendition of “Unholy”, their 2022 collaboration with German pop artist Kim Petras for which Smith won their fifth Grammy. Fittingly, Smith takes on a devil persona for the song, complete with horns and pitchfork, while flames lick the gold body statue.

Before the Gloria tour landed in London, it had already made national headlines for Smith’s satanic sartorial stylings. After years of grappling with their body image and implicitly being told that who they are is wrong, Smith reclaiming their damnation is nothing short of powerful. Smith knows that in the eyes of some, they are so-called evil for expressing themselves. But if Smith’s going to hell, they might as well have fun while they’re here. With this show, it’s clear that the singer is having an absolute ball.

Sam Smith's Gloria 2023 tour setlist in full

sam-smith-gloria-tour-setlist.jpg

Sam Smith is taking their Unholy show on the road.

After a sterling 2022 - which saw Kim Petras collaboration Unholy light up TikTok and became Sam's eighth UK Number 1 single - the start of the year saw Sam issue their fourth LP Gloria.

Debuting at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart in January, Gloria became Sam's third chart-topping album in the UK , and the ultimate testament to a record that sees Sam collaborate with the likes of Calvin Harris, Koffee and Jessie Reyez on a body of work that truly sees them step into themselves, fully informed by club and queer culture, as well as their most dance-orientated work of pop yet.

Given this, the Gloria Tour, which started yesterday (April 12) in Sheffield, is a hell of a show. Split into three parts, Love, Beauty and Sex (how very Natalia Kills), the setlist takes skipping steps through tracks from all of Sam's albums, slowly ramping up in tempo and pace, before a glorious bacchanal finale.

hey occ, can we cut down on the sam smith articles a bit? everytime you post about them it gets full of hate speech.

and by the way, their decision on including stay with me on their set list is… questionable. the song aged badly for having the line “i still need love cause i’m just a man”. how will sam perform that line? will they tweak it?

avatar

Where is Money on My Mind on the Tracklist set that was #1 Single and La La La with Naughty Boy #1 too, those two tracks was really big and in his early career success.

avatar

Smith Smyth

He's just vile! And using the term superstar is disrespectful to actual superstars. He is an attention seeking freak.

avatar

That is a disgusting, vile comment. I will share it with Sam's team.

He's not the only one who knows it. Did you see the video recently of the Irish woman shouting at him in New York what he is? He's a despicable creature

Oh and by the way have you any idea how pathetic and woke your comment looks? Go and cry you pathetic baby. Grow a pair idiot!

Well said man. He's a pathetic loser. The kind of child who would run and tell the teacher for chewing gum. Freak! Lol.

Yes he needs throwing in the woodchipper with R Kelly that guy from Lost Prophets and Gary Glitter

Anyone who targets children and young people with mental illnesses the way he does deserves the abuse.

aye, i blocked the guy. i’m not even a big fan of sam smith, they’re too over the top for me, but his obsession with them seems super weird to me. i can tell he’s making alts to talk to himself so he can “back up” his invalid points further. i am quite literally transgender so to see so much hate go to anyone who isn’t cis is disgusting. all we want to do is live and have equal rights. have an amazing week :)

Sam Smith

Sam Smith’s tour in support of his forthcoming fourth studio album, Gloria (via Capitol), will have a 2023 swing Down Under.

The superstar British singer and songwriter adds arena dates in five cities, kicking off Oct. 28 at Adelaide Entertainment Centre in South Australia.

Australia and NZ will cap a full run of dates across the U.K., Europe and North America, slated to start April 23 at Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, England.

Work has begun on the marathon that awaits.

“I start rehearsals in March,” Smith tells Billboard . “I’m starting to prep now, really. I’m starting to watch what I eat, what I’m drinking, starting to move my body more, train my voice, just getting ready for the year ahead.”

On this occasion, “I’m not doing as many gigs this time as last time, when I hit nearly 130 gigs. That was really intense. We’re doing a little less, keeping an eye on my mind and my body.”

With Gloria , which is due out Jan. 27, Smith is four albums deep into a career that has yielded four Grammys, three BRITs, a Golden Globe, one Oscar, some 50 billion multi-platform streams, and a coveted James Bond theme.

Smith knows what to expect from the road ahead. “I think I’ll always feel fatigued after a tour, it’s an intense job. The jetlag and the adrenaline crash you go through every night when you walk off stage, it’s very intense. I plan my breaks, so it’s not going to be impossible. It’s just about getting used to jetlag. Every time I do it, I know how to look after myself more and more.”

Smith’s three studio albums all crashed the top 5 on the Billboard 200, with 2017’s The Thrill of It All hitting No. 1.

Sam Smith gives 'positive' update after canceled tour dates: 'My vocal cords are healing'

sam smith tour reddit

Sam Smith is on the mend after a vocal cord injury caused them to cancel midway through a show in Manchester last month.

The " Unholy " singer, 31, shared a video update on Instagram Saturday after a visit to the doctor's office. "It’s actually really positive news. My vocal cords are healing, and after a week of vocal rest, it’s looking good," Smith said.

They added: "It's looking like I’m going to be OK for the rest of the shows, and that’s really amazing news."

Smith had to stop their concert at the Manchester AO Arena on May 24 after just four songs. They subsequently also canceled the last two dates of their Gloria tour stops in the U.K.

'Gloria' album: Sam Smith is done wallowing in a new chapter of self-acceptance

The performer apologized again in their Instagram video, telling fans the interruption was "completely out of my control."

During the Manchester show last month, the AO Arena shared a statement from Smith about their abrupt exit. "I don’t know what to say honestly. I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows," they wrote.

"During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong. I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won't," they explained. "I am honestly heartbroken I couldn’t finish the show tonight for you all."

The venue added : "Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice. If they take some rest, they will be able to perform again."

Divisive or double standard? The controversy around Sam Smith's raunchy tour and music video, explained

Fans were issued refunds for the shows, but new dates have not been scheduled.

Smith has various stops of their Gloria tour in Switzerland, Finland, France, Latvia and more scheduled next month, beginning on July 5.

The North American leg of Smith's tour is later expected to kick off in Miami on July 25.

Starting the tour in Adelaide on October 28, the star will slowly travel through other Aussie cities before finally landing in Auckland for a massive show on November 11.

Since Smith’s 2014 debut album In The Lonely Hour , went number one, the pop icon has amassed an impressive collection of achievements including 36 million albums sold, 250 million singles and 49 billion multi-platform streams.

Their music went on to earn a series of glittering awards including four Grammys.

But the LGBTQ+ icon has no intention of slowing down. Sharing what fans can expect from their upcoming album, Smith says, “It feels like emotional, sexual and spiritual liberation.”

Adding, “It feels like I’ve got my faith back, in my job. So it was beautiful, with this album, to sing freely again, for me. It feels like a coming of age”. Smith finished by saying Gloria is their “diva” album.

Smith has gained a massive following of loyal fans since breaking into the music industry with many being witness to their battle with their identity.

In 2019 the How Do You Sleep hitmaker announced with a post on Instagram that they would be changing their pronouns from he/him to they/them moving forward.

“Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ... after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”

“I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f***k it! I understand there will be many mistakes and misgendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”
