Took the Outlaw Trail through the rugged rolling hills of Sedona's historic ranch country. Our guide was very knowledgeable and had a great appreciation for the beauty of Sedona. He was also very conscious of litter prevention on the trails. Plenty of room within the jeep. The four of us highly recommend this hometown company. Enjoy!

This was definitely a highlight of our stay—and most of the thanks goes to our guide, Captain Jack. He made the tour so much more than we expected. He was an educator, and it showed. Arizona Safari Jeep Tours is also locally owned and most of the other tours in Sedona are not!

The scenery was magnificent, and our tour guide was a hoot! Our driver/guide took that jeep over terrain that I was sure we would bottom out on - but we didn't. She took the big bumps slowly, so did not jostle us more than necessary. Lee knew the territory very well, and pointed out many fascinating details. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience!

This was an excellent tour that covered a lot of ground and had great information! JC brought science and other tidbits to the tour, which was awesome to see how the spiritual, scientific, and historical all flow together/combine! There was humor and enough time at each place to be able to feel and get into the experience. Loved this tour!

We had a fun, informative, and wonderful tour with Wyatt as our guide. He shared the legends, history, and geology about Sedona with us and helped make our tour very enjoyable. He was very courteous, friendly, and professional. It was a pleasure to take the tour and enjoy Sedona's natural beauty.

CK was an exceptional guide. He knew the history of the city of Sedona, landmarks, the mountains, flowers, animals and culture in the area. We learned about the edible plants in the area, the indigenous culture and timelines for the valley: he also knew which movies had been filmed where and pointed out a cool Elvis spot. He made it an unforgettable experience for every person on the tour. The scenery was stunning, and he stopped frequently to allow everyone to take photos. It was the adventure we all needed in the comfort of a Jeep. We visited Sedona on spring break and the city was crowded. We opted for a Jeep tour, because we couldn't find parking to hike. We were in traffic and frustrated when a Safari jeep drove in front of us. My mother suggested we give them a call and try a tour. This was a great choice! It was pouring rain, and the tour we were supposed to take had been closed by the forest service. They opted for another trail that was opened, and had equally scenic views. They offered blankets, ponchos and the vehicle was heated . We got our adventure and left awestruck of the beauty and city. Excellent company, excellent tour and guide. Could not have asked for anything better.

This was the BEST tour we've ever experienced in Sedona. Our guide was Lea - super knowledgeable about everything you wanted to know from Sedona's history, the foliage, vortex energy, bizarre alien phenomena, Hollywood's history filming in Sedona, havalina encounters - you ask the questions - she knew all the stories and answers. She constantly educated us with a great sense of kindness and humor. The ride up to our destination was lumpy, bumpy but it was just great fun. The views up and back down the road was beyond spectacular. We were fortunate to capture the sunset in the west and the moon rise over the mountains in the east simultaneously. Mahalo Lea for the experience and memories that will last us a lifetime!

We took the Seven Canyons tour with Wyatt and enjoyed it a lot. He shared a lot of history, geography, native plant knowledge, and local lore. His driving was impeccable and he is very personable. Highly recommend.

My husband and I recently took a trip to Sedona, AZ and we made our first adventure of this trip with Arizona Safari Jeep Tours. We booked the ultimate tour and had Michael M. As our tour guide. Michael was a fantastic tour guide and made the experience so memorable! Because of Michael I would give 10 stars if I could. He was so knowledgeable about all aspects of Sedona and we both felt like we had learned so much by the end of the tour. Not to mention it was a lot of fun. Next time we are in Sedona we will definitely be booking one of their others tours and hopefully we get Michael as a guide again!

Went on sunset Mogollon rim tour with Joe on 11/15/2023. Road up to & around the rim was VERY bumpy- not recommended for people who can't handle backroads 4x4 wheeling. However, the tour itself was so much fun! Joe was so knowledgeable and was a very smooth driver! He had a great sense of humor! His picture taking skill is top notch- we got some awesome pictures up on the Merry-go-round scenic spot. I would 100% recommend & also will definitely be booking another tour when we come back!

My wife and I decided to do one of these tours extremely last minute. We booked our reservation about 90 minutes before it started. We're glad we chose this company over the pink Jeep simply because the pink Jeep looked tacky and it was more expensive. Our driver, WYATT, was AWESOME! Extremely informative, very funny and personable and did a great job taking pics for us during the trip and provided our group with funny jokes. His driving skills were very impressive. I understand we are off-roading in a Jeep, it's expected to be a little rough at times. Our route was incredible with tons of amazing views. After doing it once, I probably wouldn't do it again, unless I came with another group. Highly recommend this place to others.

This tour was so good! Our tour guide CK was so personable and genuinely kind. CK was very informative and was always checking on us to see if we were ok. We had older people on our tour and my kids so a wide variation of ages. We had the 5-7pm tour and it was such a beautiful part of the day with the sun setting. If I didn't have my kids with me I would have preferred more walking but this was perfect for us this time around. They do offer other variations of tours that are more extreme , I believe. We just chose the milder one. Highly recommend!

MAY 2023-- I stayed several days in Sedona and this was one of my favorite activities! My aunt and I opted for their 8am-10:30am Rim Run Supreme ($263.54 for two - gratuity/tip not included), which was fantastic. Warning: If you have any neck or back issues, do NOT book this tour, it's quite fun, but very bumpy. Our guide was Don (works Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday), who is AWESOME! He's friendly, entertaining, knowledgeable, and professional. Ask him about the aliens! The views are breathtaking, and the experience is unforgettable. Highly recommend booking one of their expeditions! I met a gal named Holly in our group who has a spooky/paranormal podcast called Fireside Phantoms, check her out! NOTE: * No public restrooms are available and all the surrounding businesses don't open until 10am. Be mindful of your liquid intake! * Their $1 "FDA approved face mask" is a blue disposable mask. Don't bother. * Parties of 8+ automatically receive a 15% upfront gratuity/ tip. * 48-hour cancellation policy. * Open 364 days a year. Closed for Christmas. * Family owned! * Jeep tires are changed every four months.

Highly recommend this tour! We family had a great time (kids 10 and 16) and the highlight of our stay in Sedona. Our guide Wyatt was full of knowledge and pride for his home city of Sedona. We all learned so much and the kids kept bringing up bits of knowledge they learned from Wyatt. So cool! The views were breathtaking. Definitely add this to your itinerary when visiting Sedona.

Frequently Asked Questions

Morning tours are best for cooler temperatures and wildlife sightings.

Light, loose-fitting clothing, comfortable shoes with good traction, sunglasses and sunscreen are key; if visiting in the winter, bring a light jacket as well. Keep in mind that anything you wear will get dusty (so it's probably best to avoid white).

Red Jeep

We had an awesome tour with Matt. Soldier's Pass was amazing with so much history behind it. We especially enjoyed climbing straight up the rock to see Devil's Kitchen and the Seven Pools. Matt knew everything about the whole area and the rock formations up above. If you are thinking of booking a tour, be sure to use Red Rock and ask for Matt as no one else could have done it better.

Took a Red Rocks Jeep Tour with “Little Deb” this afternoon! The scenery was awesome and she told some very good stories. Her family is 5th generation Arizonans and she is an authentic pioneer. We were whisked through town and then into the backcountry where the red rocks rose to the sky!! I loved the ride and the commentary! Hopped into her Jeep as she was the only woman guide. I loved hearing her perspective! Worth the money, highly recommend.

We booked a tour for the first afternoon/evening we were in Sedona and this excursion did not disappoint! The Canyons and Cowboys Tour was a fun introduction and history lesson to the beauty of Sedona! One of the best parts of our tour was our fantastic guide, Tim. He not only filled us in on the history of where we were but made us laugh and have a great time. Book this, you won’t be disappointed!

From the moment we walked into the office the staff were open and friendly. Our driver "Zane" was an interesting guy and told us a lot about the area as well as the geography and local plant life. We stopped at a couple of places where we could walk around and he offered to help us with pictures. On the drive back he also helped us plan the rest of our time in Sedona by giving some great suggestions for places to see before we left.

Doc, our guide, shared information about the geology , botany, and indigenous history, as well as recommending other fun sites to explore in Sedona. My husband and I were the only people signed up for the tour that day, so there was plenty of time to ask questions and explore during our “private” tour. The hike to explore the region is not too difficult for active seniors, but would also be fun in a family group. The jeep ride was all on paved or gravel surfaces. Walking sticks and water were provided. Doc even took a small detour on the way back to show us how to get to the Amitabha Stupa and Peace Park, after we expressed an interest in visiting it. Jeep Tours in Sedona- Are They Really Worth it?

Aug 10, 2022 | Arizona , Northern Arizona , Sedona

Pink Jeep in Front of Red Rock Landscape at Sunset

If you’ve ever looked up pictures of Sedona while planning a trip, I can almost guarantee you’ve seen a photo of a girl standing in front of a Pink Jeep. The “Pink Jeep” company actually started in Sedona in 1960, but now does tours in multiple locations in the country- but by far the most popular are in Sedona and the Grand Canyon. In this post, I am going to review multiple jeep tours in Sedona in addition to reviewing some roads you can travel in your own off-road vehicle.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO DO A JEEP TOUR IN SEDONA?

I’m assuming that by the time you found this article, I don’t have to convince you to visit Sedona. Sedona is world-renowned for its beautiful red rocks and bountiful opportunities for adventures whether you’re young, old, outdoorsy, or indoorsy.

The awesome part about Sedona is that you can visit year-round. Sedona is usually 10-15 degrees cooler than Phoenix. I will warn you, Sedona gets hot in the summer! From June-August, the temperatures top off around 100 degrees. If you decide to tour during this time (I did), do it early in the morning or around sunset.

December-March is my favorite time to be in Sedona. It can get cold, but most of the time you can wear a t-shirt or light jacket. Most of the companies offer blankets or ponchos if inclement weather arises. Snow is few and far between in Sedona, but when it happens it’s beautiful and does melt fast, so doesn’t pose too much of a problem for tours.

SUMMARY: Any month of the year. If during the Summer, Early Morning or Sunset.

WHO DOES JEEP TOURS IN SEDONA?

There are a few main companies that do Jeep Tours in Sedona. Below I will review a few of the tours for each one, along with a review of what it’s like taking a private vehicle on some of the same roads.

PINK JEEP TOURS

Pink Jeep Tours is the most recognizable and most popular Jeep Tour in Sedona. As I mentioned earlier, they were founded in Sedona in 1960. They are located in Uptown Sedona by all the tourist shops and restaurants, which is convenient if you’ll already be there.

Location: 204 N State Rte 89A, Sedona, AZ 86336, open daily 6-8

A DAY IN THE WEST JEEP TOURS

A Day in the West Jeep Tours is a company with deep roots in the Sedona area. I have the most experience with this company. They are located in West Sedona, a few minutes away from Uptown. See them driving around town in their BRIGHT YELLOW jeeps.

Location: 2900 W State Rte 89A, Sedona, AZ 86336, open 7-7 daily

SAFARI JEEP TOURS

Safari Jeep Tours is another company located in downtown Sedona. Their jeeps are mostly black, with a red logo. They have been operating for about 15 years.

Location: 335 Jordan Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336, open daily 8-5

RED ROCK WESTERN JEEP TOURS

Red Rock Western Jeep Tours is also located in Uptown Sedona, and is very highly rated! They can be spotted throughout town and in the wilderness by their bright RED jeeps.

Location: 335 Jordan Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336, open daily 7-7

my opinion on jeep tours in sedona

Okay, let’s get into the details you are looking for. It would be impossible to give you my two sense on EVERY tour from each company, but I will summarize the main tours AND give you alternatives to jeep tours in Sedona. I have been to Sedona over 15 times since I moved to Arizona in 2014, so you can say I know a thing or two about the area! Let’s get started.

Red Rock Formation at Sunset

⇒ Broken Arrow Tour ($132/person)- This is one of the most popular, and most expensive, tours. This jeep tour goes deep into the wild of East Sedona. I think this tour is worth it because of how up close and personal you are with the red rocks, and how pretty the viewpoints are. Be aware, this trail is BUMPY! I would not suggest it for older people or those with significant joint pain.

Alternative: You can hike Brown Arrow Trail to Chicken Point (walking trail separate from off-road rail, but you will see Jeeps at the viewpoints)

get to chicken point in sedona by hiking or by a pink jeep tour

Chicken Point, Sedona

NOT WORTH IT

⇒ Scenic Rim Tours ($69-90/person)- The scenic rim tour goes out to Schnebly Hill Road in East Sedona. This is one of the most popular off-road trails in Sedona. It is 12 miles in total, climbs over 2,000ft, and connects Sedona to the I-17 near Flagstaff. Don’t get me wrong, the views on this road are beautiful, but the road is just so bumpy and it feels like it never ends. You get so annoyed from knocking knees with your neighbor that the views become less important. When we got onto the smooth road again, I was SO HAPPY. I actually told myself that I’d never go on Schnebly Hill Road again unless it was with a RZR.

Alternative: You can drive with your own vehicle or rent a RZR (2-4 person ATV) to go on this road. You can also hike the Hangover rail from the Huckaby Trailhead on Schenbly Hill before the dirt road starts.

⇒ Diamondback Gulch Tour ($114/person)- This Jeep Tour in Sedona is on the West Side of the city on Forest Road 525. Again, it’s a beautiful place, but you’re pretty distant from the red rocks. In my opinion, if you are going to do a Jeep Tour, you should be up close and personal with the red rocks. I’ve camped and hiked in this area multiple times.

Alternative: You can drive with your own vehicle on FR525c to Robber’s Roost cave. You could also hike in West Sedona- one of my favorites is Doe Mountain.

Pink Jeep Tour Parked onto a Dirt Road at Sunset

Pink Jeep Tour on Schnebly Hill Road

⇒ Diamondback Gulch Tour ($89-129/person)- I know that above I said this same tour was NOT worth it for the Pink Jeep Tours, but if you were going to pick one tour from this company, I would do this one. It doesn’t get as up close to the rocks as some other routes, but it is beautiful! You’ll experience a rugged road on this route.

Alternative: Drive your own off-road vehicle on FR525c to Robber’s Roost Cave rail OR hike Doe Mountain

Doe Mountain in Sedona- Alternative to Jeep Tour

Doe Mountain Trail

⇒ Mogollon Rim Tour ($89-129/person)- I have personally done this tour. I have been to Sedona over 15 times and never did a Jeep Tour in Sedona until August of 2020 when my family was in town for my medical school graduation. I figured it would be a fun activity to do together, andddd they were willing to pay haha. I had always wanted to go up Schnebly Hill Road, so that’s why we did this route. In the past, I had tried to drive up from the bottom in my F150 truck and it was too much, so we turned around.

No doubt, this route was beautiful. It was just SOOOOO bumpy. I was over it in about 30 minutes. You’re constantly knocking knees with your neighbor and hitting your arms on the edge of the Jeep. I had such a bad headache and got so cranky by the end- I was never so excited to be on smooth road. And FYI, this is coming from someone who does off-roading in their own personal Jeep often. Nothing at all wrong with the company or the guide, but I would rather spend my money another way.

Alternative: Hike the Hangover Trail to get views of Schnebly Hill Road (park on the smooth part of Schnebly Hill Road).

Group of People in a Yellow Jeep Tour in Sedona in Red Rocks

⇒ Seven Canyons Tour ($89/person)- This Jeep Tour in Sedona travels up the Dry Creek Basin OHV trail in West Sedona into a canyon. I highly suggest this tour if you go with Safari Jeep Tours- only a few others use this trail. It’s also a beautiful area of Sedona Wilderness.

Alternative: Hike Boynton Canyon in West Sedona.

READ THIS NEXT

I made a complete trail review for Boynton Canyon to the Subway Cave. Read it here!

⇒ Rim Run Supreme Tour ($109/person)- As I mentioned before, I’m not a fan of this road. It’s long and extremely bumpy- I wouldn’t do it again.

Cave in the Desert of Sedona

⇒ Solider’s Pass Sedona Tour ($99-139/person)- This route is exclusive to Red Rock Western Jeep Tours in Sedona- which makes it worth it! This is a beautiful area that I’ve been to multiple times- you’ll be intimately up close and personal with the Red Rocks and get to see some of the most famous sights. I especially recommend this for people who can’t or don’t want to hike for whatever reason.

Alternative: Hike Soldier’s Pass Trail to see Devil’s Sinkhole, Seven Sacred Pools, and the caves.

Hiking to Soldiers Pass Cave

⇒ Canyons & Cowboys Tour ($89-129/person)- This route is one of the most popular for this company. As mentioned above with Safari Jeep Tours, this Jeep Tour in Sedona travels up the Dry Creek Basin OHV trail in West Sedona into a canyon. It’s also a beautiful area of Sedona Wilderness.

Alternative: Hike Boynton Canyon Trail.

⇒ Sedona Old Bear Wallow Tour ($89-129/person)- As I mentioned before, I’m not a fan of this road. It’s long and extremely bumpy- I wouldn’t do it again. However, if you decide to do it- go down to Merry Go Round Rock and Window Rock.

Red Jeep on a Dirt Road in the Forest

ALTERNATIVES: ATV RENTAL OR PRIVATE VEHICLE TRIPS

We’ve just spent the last bit talking about formal Jeep Tours. Now I’d like to talk about some alternatives, including driving your own private vehicle, or renting an off-road vehicle. The first I’d like to mention is renting a multi-person ATV . You can rent a 1-4 person vehicle from West Sedona with Sedona ATV or similar companies. The cost is $375+ tax, which comes out to be between 90-100, pretty similar to the cost of Jeep Tours.

These vehicles can be dangerous, so you need to be careful. They have a much better suspension system than Jeeps, so riding up Schnebly Hill Road or similar roads won’t be as treacherous. I told myself if I ever go up Schnebly Hill Road again, I will only do it with an ATV. If you do take an ATV out, please keep music on low- everyone in the canyon can hear it-trust me!

ATV in the forest

PRIVATE VEHICLE

If you are road-ripping to Sedona from another area in Arizona or neighboring states, you can take your own Private Jeep Tour in Sedona. Most of these previously mentioned trails, including Schnebly Hill, Broken Arrow, and Diamondback Gulch are accessible to private vehicles. If you are renting a vehicle, I advise NOT going on these roads.

As I said before, years ago I took my F150 from the bottom of Schnebly Road near Uptown Sedona and I had to turn around. I decided to be stubborn and try out Schnebly again by coming from the top. Schnebly Hill is a 12-mile road connecting Uptown Sedona to the I-17 highway by Flagstaff, that climbs 2000ft in elevation.

I read on AllTrails that the top of Schnebly Hill Road isn’t as rough, and you can camp for free (dispersed camping), so I tried it out. The reviews were correct- the first 6 miles down to Schnebly Hill vista are very driveable. We camped 4 miles in + no one was around us.

Dirt Road in the Forest on a Clear Sunny Day

After we set up camp, we decided to drive a mile and a half past the vista point to Merry-Go Round Rock. I was quickly reminded that I really don’t like driving on Schnebly. We did have a nice time visiting Window Rock and watching the sunset, but the bumps are just so bad. My jeep has high clearance and 4WD, but we still bottomed out on a few rocks.

Now I’m officially drive driving on this road unless by ATV, haha.

Male and Dog Standing on a Lone Rock Through a Cave

SUMMARY- ARE JEEP TOURS IN SEDONA WORTH IT?

YES AND NO.

YES, it’s worth it if it fits in your budget and you have time to explore other areas of Sedona while you’re there. I would NOT replace hiking with a Jeep Tour- you need to hike (if you’re able).

NO, it’s not worth it if you have a tight budget- your money could be used better elsewhere- like on a nice hotel or nice food. NO, the rim tour isn’t worth it. If you’re going to do a tour, do one that I recommended above.

Whatever you choose, please have fun and be safe!

Best Things to Do in Sedona with Kids

1. explore native american culture.

Sedona is near some of the best-preserved Native American ruins in the US, including Montezuma Castle , a preserved cliff dwelling, and  Honanki and Tuzigoot , which feature native petroglyphs. Visitors can also book a Native American culture tour with a focus on art and history or a nature experience. And, there are many art galleries that feature work by local Native American artists from the tribes of Sinagua, Yavapai, Apache, Hopi, and Navajo. Families can also view ancient artifacts and see traditional dance performances at  Sedona Heritage Museum .

2. Go for a Hike

Hiking is my family's favorite vacation activity, and Sedona did not disappoint. Hikes in the area range from an easy stroll around the iconic Bell Rock to rock-scrambling up Cathedral Rock and exploring hidden waterfalls in Secret Canyon. A Red Rock parking pass is required at most of the trail parking areas. The pass—which is available as a daily, weekly, or annual pass— can be purchased online the same day as your hike (no printing required). Be aware that the parking areas fill up fast, but there is a free shuttle service that picks up and drops off at various locations around town.

3. Take a Jeep Tour

One of the most popular ways to explore Sedona is on an off-roading Jeep tour, and there are numerous companies ready to give your family a ride. The iconic  Pink Jeep Tours have the most options, but they fill up quickly, so make sure to book ahead of time. Other options are  Sedona Jeep Tours ,  Red Rock Western Jeep Tours , and  Arizona Safari Jeep Tours .

8. Go Swimming

You might not think of swimming as a typical desert activity, but Sedona offers some nice creeks and swimming holes perfect for cooling off on hot days. Popular swimming holes can be found in Slide Rock State Park , named one of America's top 10 swimming holes and known for its natural water slide, and Wet Beaver Wilderness , which has some swimming areas but is best known for a cliff-jumping spot known as "the crack." Since it is a 3.5-mile hike one way to the crack, it is less crowded than other Sedona swimming holes.

9. Catch a Fish

In addition to providing great swimming holes, Sedona's creeks are also great ecosystems for trout, making it a top fishing destination. All the kids enjoyed playing in the fountains while listening to live Native American flute music in the plaza.

If your kids are Cars fans, check out the Wigwam Motel on Route 66, a few miles outside the park. Reminiscent of the Cozy Cone Motel in Radiator Springs, it has a collection of classic cars parked outside, including Tow Mater's Grandpappy. This unexpected find was my son's favorite part of the trip.

21. Phoenix , Arizona

From Sedona to Phoenix, you will notice a dramatic change in landscape, from red rocks and mountains to smaller hills with forests of saguaro cactuses covering the landscapes. We were lucky to experience the spectacular spring wildflower bloom when we visited in the first week of April, which also happens in the fall. We hiked to Yavapai Point just outside Phoenix in  Lake Pleasant Regional Park , where we were surrounded by huge cactuses and hundreds of yellow, red, and blue wildflowers. Keep an eye out for the wild donkeys.
