Trains pass through jade-green forests, misty mountains and gorgeous coastal stretches in lush South India.

Riding the rails is one of the greatest joys of any India adventure, whether you’re trundling high up into the hills aboard a UNESCO-listed miniature train or clattering along the sun-drenched, coast-hugging Konkan Railway.

Down south, landscapes spin from honey-gold beaches and palm-shaded backwaters to jungle-covered hills, gushing waterfalls and sprawling megacities. And there’s no finer way to soak it all up than from the window seat of a clanking train, over a white-paper cup of steaming sweet chai.

Fabulous food is often part of the picture, too, thanks to vendors deftly making their way through carriages at stations, and top-tier tickets that include on-board meals. As you roll across wildly beautiful South India , you’ll see local staples such as potato-stuffed dosas (crispy, thin lentil-and-rice-flour crepes), crispy vadas (fried savory dough) and coconut-rich Keralite stews pop up, while soothing chai and filter coffee inevitably always appear at just the right moment. Certain stations are famous for selling particular regional specialities, and some trains are known for serving superb food.

Here are eight terrific train journeys that offer a taste of India’s sultry south.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway in Tamil Nadu, India

Mettupalayam to Ooty (Udhagamandalam) on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

46km (29 miles), 3.5–4.75 hours

South Indian rail thrills don’t get more classic than catching the famous, Unesco-listed “toy train” into northern Tamil Nadu ’s misty Western Ghats . Jade-green tea plantations, lush jungle, rushing waterfalls and far-reaching panoramas jostle for attention as the narrow-gauge, rack-and-pinion steam train rattles up into the Nilgiri Hills from tiny Mettupalayam, zipping through 16 tunnels and across 250 bridges. Eventually, it reaches the hugely popular hill station of Ooty , at 2240m (7350ft). There’s also a stop along the way at Coonoor, the Nilgiris’ second hill station, resting at 1720m (5643ft). First opened in 1899 (and extended to Ooty in 1908), the NMR pulls in an often-lively domestic crowd, with people cheering as tunnels plunge you into darkness.

The blue-and-cream miniature train leaves for Ooty every day at 7:10am and takes 4.75 hours on the way up; it makes its way back down to Mettupalayam at 2pm, a 3.5-hour journey. The best way to get to Mettupalayam is aboard the nine-hour overnight Nilgiri Express from Chennai Central (or hop on it at Coimbatore , which has an airport), arriving just in time at 6:15am.

Railway bridge over the Sharavathi River at Honavar, Karnataka

Bengaluru (Bangalore) to Gokarna on the Karwar Express

711km (442 miles), 14 hours

Flights link Karnataka ’s lively capital of Bengaluru with the coast in an hour or so – but then you’d be missing out on a spectacular slow-travel jaunt through the lush, biodiverse and unbelievably beautiful Western Ghats en route to Gokarna ’s blissful beaches. Leaving Bengaluru’s Yesvantpur Junction station three days a week at 7am, the Karwar Express follows inland Karnataka’s so-called Green Route, which is known for its wild green forests, dense coffee crops and over 100 bridges. After reaching the low-key coastal town of Mangaluru (Mangalore) , the train follows the coast north to Gokarna Road station, where some of South India’s most magical and relaxed beaches await on the doorstep.

If you’d prefer an overnight train to the beach, catch the daily Panchaganga Express at 6:50pm from Bengaluru City station, which drops you at Gokarna Road 12 hours later.

Mumbai to Margao (Madgaon) on the Mandovi Express

765km (475 miles), 12 hours

One of India’s most spectacular railway stations – Mumbai ’s Gothic-style, colonial-era Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus – is the 7:10am starting point for a thrilling coastal adventure south to the golden sands of Goa . Built in the 1990s, the beloved 756km (470-mile) Konkan Railway rushes across 2216 bridges and through almost 100 tunnels, and includes one of the country’s tallest viaducts (a 60m/197ft-high marvel near Ratnagiri). Gaze out on tropical-fruit plantations, rice fields, meandering rivers and electric-green coconut palms as you spin through Maharashtra to land in Margao , southern Goa’s main transport hub, from where there’s easy onward transport to mellow beachy beauties like Palolem and Benaulim.

But the Mandovi Express isn’t all about the views: it’s also famous for its food, courtesy of a Karnataka-born catering company that delights travelers with samosas, idli-sambar , vadas and other favorites. South of Goa, the Konkan Railway continues through Karnataka almost to the Kerala border.

A train passes through a railway bridge in Manroe Island on in Kollam, Kerala, India

Varkala to Kanyakumari on the Island Express

127km (79 miles), four hours

Settle in for a leisurely journey from the golden-black beaches, lively surf-and-yoga scene and holy temples of Varkala , on Kerala ’s south coast, to the southernmost tip of India, in Tamil Nadu. Famous as the place where three seas meet – the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal – laid-back Kanyakumari centers on a revered waterside temple devoted to the Hindu goddess Kumari, a site with an entrancing feel. The beloved Island Express’ 10:55am departure from Varkala means you’ll enjoy southern Kerala’s palm-laced landscapes in all their hazy day-lit beauty.

Alternatively, you can hop on in Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) , three hours from Kanyakumari, or even from as far north as Bengaluru – which involves a 19-hour, 944km (587-mile) overnight spin via Coimbatore, Kochi, Kollam and more.

A Goa Express train passes the Dudhsagar Waterfall, Goa, India

Vasco da Gama to Londa on the Goa Express

146km (91 miles), 3.5 hours

The tumbling 603m(1980ft)-high cascade of Dudhsagar Falls (one of India’s tallest waterfalls) is the “wow” moment on any journey between the South Goan port city of Vasco da Gama and Londa, just over the border in Karnataka. Along the way, Goa’s gold-tinged shoreline gives way to the Western Ghats’ Unesco-protected hills, as you dive into the contiguous wildlife-rich Mollem National Park and Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary .

The 3pm Goa Express (a daily superfast train) runs north from Vasco da Gama via Londa all the way to Delhi – 2208km (1372 miles), or 39.5  hours away. It also stops in Margao , a handy alternative Goa start point.

Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR Central railway station, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India

Chennai to Hyderabad on the Chennai–Hyderabad Express

715km (444 miles), 13 hours

Wake up to the ancient architectural jewels of Telangana ’s dynamic capital Hyderabad , home to some of India’s most magnificent Islamic buildings, such as the chandelier-lit Chowmahalla Palace , the 16th-century Golconda Fort and the splendid Qutb Shahi Tombs . The fun starts with a 4:45pm daily departure from Chennai Central and a South Indian–style dinner on board as the Chennai–Hyderabad Express inches its way north from Tamil Nadu. You’ll probably start the next day sharing a chat and a sugary chai with your carriage neighbors, watching the countryside morph into an urban metropolis on the slow roll into Hyderabad Deccan station.

Ezhara beach in Kannur, India

Kochi to Margao on the Netravathi Express

849km (527 miles), 14.75 hours

Also following the Konkan Railway for much of the way, this overnight route zips you north from Kerala’s arty cultural hub Kochi to serene southern Goa. After hopping on at Ernakulam Junction station in Kochi at 1:50pm, Kerala whirls past in a blur of sun-toasted coconut palms. Post-sunset, you’ll travel through coastal Mangaluru and the temple town of Udupi in Karnataka, to (finally!) reach Margao Junction just before sunrise.

In its full extent, the Netravathi Express links Kerala’s capital Trivandrum with Mumbai – a whopping 30-hour, 1805km (1122-mile) journey. It’s also handy for reaching northern Kerala’s untouristed beaches (around Kannur and Bekal ), and you can pick it up from further south than Kochi if you’re in, say, Alappuzha (Alleppey) or Varkala.

A train on Pamban Bridge, which connects the towns of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India

Chennai to Rameswaram on the Rameswaram Express

665km (413 miles), 11 hours

Plodding across the 2km(1.25-mile)-long Pamban Bridge, with the Bay of Bengal swirling below, puts a whole new spin on riding the rails in South India. The bridge links mainland Tamil Nadu to Pamban Island, home to the small pilgrimage town of Rameswaram and the eerie ruins of Dhanushkodi (a once-thriving port destroyed by a 1964 cyclone), and marks the final stretch of a long overnight trip south from Chennai Egmore.

Known as the Boat Mail Express in the 19th century, this train originally operated as part of a rail-and-ferry route linking Tamil Nadu with neighboring Sri Lanka (then under British rule as Ceylon), until the Pamban Bridge was opened in 1914. It’s also possible to travel by train across from the celebrated temple city of Madurai in southern Tamil Nadu; trains leave throughout the day from Madurai Junction (four hours).

At the time of writing, rail services across the original century-old Pamban Bridge have been suspended while a new bridge is constructed, after safety concerns arose in 2022.

How to book trains in South India

The best way to find out about South Indian train services is online via Erail , Indian Railways and/or Seat 61 ; this last resource offers invaluable advice on all things train travel–related in India, including buying tickets.

Many trains sell out well in advance of their departure date, so it’s best to book as far ahead as possible, ideally online. Long-distance bookings currently open 120 days beforehand. Most comfortable for overnight travels are the reserved air-conditioned classes (1AC, 2AC or 3AC). The easiest way to reserve is through a booking portal such as Cleartrip or 12Go . The IRCTC government website also takes online bookings, but it can be a frustratingly fiddly process. On the ground, major train stations in places like Mumbai and Chennai usually have dedicated ticket counters for foreign travelers. Read more about how to get around India by train here .

A Quick and Easy Guide to Train Travel in South India

June 28, 2016 by Lauren Melnick

Last Updated on December 22, 2022 by Lauren Melnick

Travelling by train in India is by far one of the cheapest ways to experience this huge country. Not only is it a great way to interact with the locals, but it will also give you the chance to watch the lush green terrain rush past as you get a glimpse of the day-to-day life in small villages and big cities.

I had my first experience of India train travel when I visited the South of India in February. My friend and I spent three weeks in India travelling from the east to west coast and back again. By the end of it, I had developed a deep appreciation for train travel and a undying hate for night buses.

Here is a quick guide to everything you need to know about exploring South India by Train!

Table of Contents

Book Online

There’s an app for that, what is the foreign tourist (ft) quota, what are reservation against cancellation (rac) and waitlisted tickets, second class, sleeper class, ac tiers 1 to 3, train schedule and fares in south india, how safe is train travel in south india –, getting off at the right stop, how to keep your bags safe, what to bring with you on the train, how to buy train tickets in south india.

Travelling by train to India means a lack of spontaneity to a certain degree. You won’t be able to just rock up and board a train. You’ll be required to make a seat reservation for long-distance train journeys.

The best way to buy tickets for train travel in south India is online. Tickets do tend to book up as quickly as 90 days in advance, so it’s best to lock in those travel plans ASAP.

There are two websites where you can buy tickets from, the official IRCTC site and ClearTrip . I prefer to use ClearTrip as it is a lot easier to navigate and simpler to understand. Even though you do end up paying a wee little service fee on top – it’s worth it. The site also has a few nifty tools like Seat Availability Calendar . It gives you an indication of IRCTC seat availability for a range of dates across the different train classes, so you can find the best date and train to travel.

ClearTrip has also recently launched an Android, Windows and Apple iStore app ! And it does more than just allow you to book your tickets with a swipe of your finger, check ticket availability or see if your train is running on time. It also gives you updates on what is happening in the city you are travelling to, ideas on what to eat curated especially for you and a list of over 15,000+ things to do!

How to Book tickets at the Station

Sometimes life gets in the way, and booking online is not possible. This was the case for me when I tried to book tickets from Kerala to Goa. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, you can try going down to the station to book RAC, get yourself Waitlisted Tickets or try to grab yourself one of the Foreign Tourist quota seats.

Many of the trains in India have a quota of seats or berths only available to foreign tourists and IndRail pass holders. This can be a lifesaver when a train is fully booked, and you like to plan your trips last minute. The train offering the FT quota may still have a few berths available within a day or two of departure, making it possible to travel around at short notice.

But isn’t foolproof and you might not get the class you want. The FT quota is only 200 trains out of the 9,000 trains a day, and the quota might be as small as 2 seats and no bigger than 12.

Four of us tried to get the FT quota for tickets to Goa, but only two in our group managed to get tickets. This caused my friend and me to throw our travel plans out the window and decide to make a mission down the east coast of India. Which in hindsight I am glad happened because the quota tickets were in second class and I’m a motherfucking princess.

Due to how fast train tickets sell out online, the Indian Railways sells tickets in three different categories:

  • Confirmed Reservation (CNF)
  • Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC)
  • Waitlist (WL)

With a RAC ticket, you will still be allowed to board the train and travel, but you won’t have a specific seat or berth number. If one of the confirmed ticket holders cancels before departure, you will be then promoted to CNF with a confirmed seat or berth. In the worst-case scenario, no one cancels, and you might have to share a berth with someone and not get a comfortable night’s sleep.

A waitlist ticket means you cannot travel until you promoted from WL to RAC. But, if you have a low-numbered WL ticket, you stand a good chance of being bumped up to RAC. And if you don’t get onto the train because your number is too high, your money will be refunded.

To see if your status has been changed, you can check online. Just head on over to either Indian Rail or ClearTrip and enter your PNR number found on your ticket.

Choosing your Class

When booking train tickets in south India, you can choose between five different classes. The main differences between each class have to do with how much you value your personal space, privacy and comfort.

If you are okay with getting up close and personal with the locals to save a few rupees, you should be able to survive second class without any problems. The cars are packed with as many people as possible, seats are not assigned, and for overnight journeys, there is no berth to pull down to catch some shut-eye.

Hell, you should count yourself lucky if you manage to get a seat to sit on.

There is also no AC, so brace yourself for a couple of hours of sweaty bodies bumping up against one another. Just think of it like Britney Spears’s I’m a Slave 4 U music video, but less sexy.

For just a few more rupees, you can experience the comforts of stretching out on a berth, and personal space to make your night just a little bit more comfortable. Bedding is not included so be sure to pack a sleeping bag or a blanket –especially if you are travelling during winter when it gets colder at night.

It is the way most Indians travel, so you will have plenty of opportunities to have a chat with your bunkmates and get to know the locals. The big bonus of choosing sleeper class is that you get a better view of the countryside then the AC coaches, which makes up for the fact that there is no air conditioning.

For many foreign travellers, the price of this class isn’t going to put a HUGE dent in your budget, so if you aren’t looking to rough it or just want privacy – this is the class for you. I choose to travel on AC 3 for all my routes in India, and I loved it!

The different tiers are broken up with varying degrees of segregation and creature comforts. Here you will find air-con, complimentary bread rolls, bedding and the option to choose non-vegetarian or vegetarian for your meals.

I only had positive experiences during my train rides and luckily got to chat with some very interesting locals. The one nun I met even went out of her way to make sure we got off at the right station.

All the feels right there.

It is pretty easy to check the train timetable and fares for south India. All you need is an internet connection. If Indian Rail or Indian Railways is a bit too bewildering for you, ClearTrip once again comes to save the day. Seat 61 has a great resource for helping you understand the Indian Rail websites and navigating through the confusion.

What to expect on your journey

I know there are some horror stories that go around about how “unsafe” train travel in India can be (usually aimed at female travellers), but if you keep your wits about you as you would do anywhere else in the world, I doubt you’ll have any problems.

If you are a solo female traveller and worried about your safety, try to book the top bunk on the A3 class. No one is going to be able to get to you without disturbing the people below and everyone else below you.

I slept on the middle bunk because my friend is an ass and grew really long legs that kept on getting in passengers faces as they walked past. Needless to say, I had no problems, and the locals did their best to look after us.

If you are on a train that has multiple stops, make sure to set an alarm on your phone to ensure you get off at the right stop. This is especially important if you are on a night train and need to get off along the route before the train reaches its final destination.

There have been cases of bags being stolen or cut open on trains. To avoid this happening to you, there are three things you can do:

  • Buy locks for your zippers and secure your bag to the seat with a chain and a lock.
  • Sleep with your bag underneath your pillow.
  • Hide your valuables on you or inside your pillowcase.

Looking outside the window will only hold your attention for so long. If you are taking a long-distance train pack the following to help keep you entertained and more comfortable during your journey:

  • Phone Charger (yes there are power points in A3!)
  • Your tickets
  • Toilet paper
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Sheet or sarong to sleep on
  • Water to stay hydrated

Overall, train travel in India is an easy and interesting experience! Be sure to do a bit of pre-planning beforehand and enjoy the ride!

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travelers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travelers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now – let your inner child rejoice!

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Different train options for South India

Last Updated on September 29, 2020

Here we provide you with the different train options for South India. Not to deny that train travel within South India is not as extensive when compared to the North. The popular places (for eg in Kerala) are not well connected and most of the time, it is more convenient to hire a car or fly. Having said this, the Konkan Railway (Southern railway) is the most scenic, and taking a train is well worth the effort.

Listed below are a few of the best train options for South India.

Places to visit in South India

Table of Contents

1. different train options (Mumbai to Goa)

Train Name: 10103 Mandovi Express Station of origin: Mumbai CST up to Madgaon Departure time: 07:10 hrs (CST) Arrival time: 18:45 hrs (Madgaon)

*if staying in North Goa, alight at Pernem or Thivim.

Pros : As it is a day train, the countryside is best explored. You chug through the winding waterfalls, mountains, rice fields, and lush greenery.

Cons : The train has the most stops and one that takes the longest to reach Goa. The train is for those who enjoy long journeys.

Return Journey : (10104 Mandovi Exp) departs from Madgaon at 09:30 hrs and reaches Mumbai CST at 21:40 hrs.

There are different trains options available for South India; such as Konkan Kanya which is an overnight train and Jan Shatabdi which is the fastest, reaching Goa in 7 hours time. However, as all Shatabdi’s, it has chair car seats so not the most comfortable.

Things to do in South India

2. different train options ( Goa to Hampi)

Train name: 18048 Vsg Howrah Express Station of origin: Vasco Da Gama up to Howrah (Kolkata) Runs on: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday Departure time: 07:10 hrs (Vasco) Arrival time: 14:53 hrs (Hospet Junction)

*Hospet is the nearest station to Hampi.

Pros : This is the only train to Hampi from Goa . However, the biggest plus of taking this train is that you pass through the very famous Dudhsagar Falls (Sea of Milk). It one of the most scenic waterfalls and if travelling in the monsoons, a definite must-see. The train halts for about a minute in the falls.

Cons : As the train does not run every day, you have to plan your itinerary accordingly.

Return Journey : We suggest avoid the train if going from Hampi to Goa. The train starts from Kolkata and hence in all likelihood would be delayed by the time it reaches Hospet and would also be used and dirty. Alternatives are taking a bus/ renting a car, but please note that the roads on this route are not very good.

3. different train options (Hospet to Mysore or Bangalore)

Train Name: 16591 Hampi Exp Station of origin: Hubli Junction up to Mysore Departure time: 20:45 hrs (Hospet) Arrival time: Next day 09:40 hrs (Mysore)/ 06:10 hrs (Bangalore City)

Pros : It is the most convenient and inexpensive alternative. The train is well-timed. You do not waste a day travelling.

Return Journey : (16592 Hampi Exp) Departs from Mysore at 18:15 hrs (Bangalore City – 21:50 hrs) and reaches Hospet next morning at 07:40 hrs.

Train journeys in South India

4. different train options (Goa to kochi)

Train Name: (16345) Netravati Exp Station of origin: Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai) up to Trivandrum Departure time: 23:00 hrs (Madgaon) Arrival time: Next day 14.10 hrs (Ernakulam Junction)

Pros : Cheapest way to get to Kochi . There are rarely direct flights on this route. Flights are via Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad.

Cons : One of the most-used trains, especially by Indians, hence tickets have to be booked well in advance (two months before departure date) as they get sold out quickly.

Return Journey : (16346 Netravati Exp) Departs from Ernakulam at 14:05 hrs and reaches Madgoan next morning at 05:00 hrs. *There are other trains on this route that take less travel time, however, they do not run on all days. Check your travel dates to see if they are available.

Rail routes in South India

5. differet train options (Alleppey to Varkala)

Train Name: (12075) Jan Shatabdi Station of origin: Kozhikode (Calicut) up to Trivandrum Departure time: 18:15 hrs (Alleppey) Arrival time: 20:05 hrs (Varkala)

Pros : Quicker than driving and much cheaper too. Also, if only on a Kerala trip, there are not many instances where one can travel by train so if both these places are part of your itinerary, take a train, just for the experience.

Return Journey : (12076 Jan Shatabdi) Departs from Varkala at 06:32 hrs and reaches Alleppey at 08:15 hrs This train starts from Calicut and halts at Kochi (Ernakulam Junction) too.

Top train journeys in India

6. different train options (Mumbai to Aurangabad)

Train Name: 12071 Jan Shatabdi Exp Station of origin: Dadar Station up to Aurangabad Departure time: 14:00 hrs (Dadar) Arrival time: 20:35 hrs (Aurangabad)

Pros : The fastest train with the fewest halts. You can also fly to Aurangabad, however, flights are either very early in the morning or late evening.

Return journey : (12072 Jan Shatabdi Exp) Departs from Aurangabad at 06:00 hrs and reaches Dadar at 12:30 hrs

Train options across South India

7. Different train options (Chennai to Pondicherry)

Train Name: 12635 Vaigai Exp Station of origin: Chennai Egmore up to Madurai Departure time: 13:20 hrs (Chennai) Arrival time:  15:45 hrs (Villupuram Junction-nearest station to Pondicherry)

Pros : Again the cheapest and most convenient way to get to Pondicherry . Rented car fares in Tamil Nadu are the highest when compared to other regions and taking trains when possible makes it easy on the pocket. If not delayed, the train takes lesser time than driving.

Return journey : (12636 Vaigai Exp) Departs from Villupuram Junction at 11:42 hrs and reaches Chennai Egmore at 14:40 hrs. *The train goes up to Madurai. You can take this train either from Chennai or Pondicherry to get to Madurai.

Itinerary to Visit the South of India in 15 Days

So, let’s dive right into it!

You will find a day-by-day itinerary including the highlights of each place in the first part of this post. I’ve also included a map and other useful information (how to get around, the best time to visit, etc.) in the second part.

Day 1: Chennai

Chennai, the perfect place so start a South India itinerary

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu, and as it has an international airport, it’s the perfect introduction to this culture-rich state.

There are many things to do in Chennai , but some of the most popular ones are going temple hopping , spending time at the city’s beaches and seeing the colonial architecture .

🛕 Highlights of Chennai

  • San Thome Cathedral Basilica: This beautiful church was built by the Portuguese in 1523. It’s one of the three churches in the world that have been built on the tombs of one of the apostles (this one was built on Thomas the Apostle’s tomb).
  • Kapaleeshwarar Temple: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this Hindu temple was built in the 7th century and later extended. It boasts some impressive architecture with many colourful details (that’s my favourite thing about Hindu temples).
  • Ripon Building: The beautiful Ripon Building was built in Indo-Saracenic architecture in 1913, and it’s the official seat of the Chennai Corporation. It’s good to know that you can’t visit this building on the inside, but it’s most famous for its chiming clock, which is wound every day.
  • Elliot’s Beach or Marina Beach: If you feel like relaxing, then heading to one of Chennai’s beaches is the perfect thing to do. While Marina Beach is the city’s most popular beach, Elliot’s Beach is a more quiet alternative.

Where to stay in Chennai: The Raintree

🚍 Mahabalipuram , the next destination on this South India itinerary, is just 1 hour from Chennai, so you can either head here on day 1 or day 2 of this itinerary.

Day 2: Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram in India

Mahabalipuram was one of my favourite places to visit in the South of India! This place is home to a group of royal monuments dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. You will find plenty of beautifully carved temples and rock-cut caves here.

There are three different sites to see in Mahabalipuram but make sure to start your visit at the famous Shore Temple as this is where you can buy entry tickets.

A unique sight at Mahabalipuram is Krishna’s Butterball (as pictured above). According to the story, they tried moving this gigantic boulder numerous times for safety reasons, but it didn’t work.

Where to stay in Mahabalipuram: Bodhiwoods Resorts

🚍 The next stop on this itinerary is Pondichery (Puducherry), which is a 2-hour drive from Mahabalipuram. You can head here on day 2 or day 3 .

Day 3, 4 & 5: Pondicherry and Auroville

Villa Krish in the French Quarter in Pondicherry, India

The charming town of Pondicherry is famous for its mustard-yellow colonial buildings, beautiful beaches and cosy restaurants.

From the 16th century onward, this city was ruled by Dutch, British and French colonists. Pondicherry was repeatedly fought over during the Anglo-French Wars. In 1815, however, when the British gained control over India, they allowed France to keep their settlements in this city.

Some of the best things to do in Pondicherry are to explore the city’s different quarters, head to the beach and visit the nearby township of Auroville .

🛕 Highlights of Pondicherry

  • French Quarter: Pondicherry’s French Quarter is also called “White Town” and it’s here that you will find the mustard-yellow colonial buildings Pondicherry is so famous for.
  • Tamil Quarter: This quarter is often called “Black Town”, and it’s located on the West side of the French Quarter, across the canal. You will find three parts here – the Hindu, the Muslim and the Christian part. This area is completely different from the French Quarter and it’s nice to soak up the atmosphere in this part of the city too.
  • Beaches: If you want to relax a little, it’s good to know that the French Quarter of Pondicherry is located right at the beach. This is the perfect place for a stroll on the beach promenade or to swim in the sea.
  • Auroville: This experimental township was founded in 1968 by Mira Alfassa, who is also called “The Mother”. It was based on the vision of the Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo and its purpose is to realise human unity. I would suggest reading my post about Auroville if you want to know more about the place, though, as I will keep it short in this one.

Where to stay in Pondicherry: Executive Inn

🚍 On day 5 , it’s time to head to Thanjavur , which is about 5 hours from Pondicherry.

Day 6: Thanjavur

Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

With over a hundred Hindu temples, the small city of Thanjavur is often called “the temple city of India”, and you will indeed find a temple on every street corner here.

This city is also home to one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage sites in India, the famous Brihadisvara Temple , which is also called the “big temple”. But more about that below!

🛕 Highlights of Thanjavur:

  • Brihadisvara Temple: This is Thanjavur’s most famous tourist attraction and it’s easy to understand why. The magnificent Brihadisvara Temple was built in the 11th century by Chola emperor Rajaraja I and it’s one of the three Great Living Chola Temples . Its granite tower is one of the tallest in India.
  • Maratha Palace : This palace was built at the demand of the Thanjavur Nayak kings in the 15th century. It’s not as spectacular as the Brihadisvara Temple but it is worth visiting if you have more time in Thanjavur. You will find a beautiful Durbar Hall here among other things.

Another thing I loved doing in Thanjavur was simply wandering around the streets . There’s an incredible amount of Hindu temples here, more than in any other city I’ve been to in India (or any other country actually).

Where to stay in Thanjavur: Hotel Victoriyah

Day 7 & 8: Madurai

Temples are famous about India

🚍 The next destination on this itinerary for South India is Madurai , which is about 4 hours from Thanjavur. If you head here in the morning of day 7, you will still have some time left to explore Madurai (or rest) in the afternoon.

Madurai is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and this is one of the best cultural destinations in India . Among other things, you will find one of the most famous Indian landmarks in this city – the Meenakshi Temple .

One of the things I love the most about Madurai is how friendly and welcoming the people are in this city. They don’t (or hardly) speak English, but they still manage to welcome you with open arms.

🛕 Highlights of Madurai

  • Meenakshi Temple : This is one of India’s oldest and most important Hindu temples. It’s estimated that the first temple that stood on these grounds was built in the 1st century. The temple that you can see today, however, was rebuilt in the 16th century after the previous one was destroyed by Muslim invaders. The Meenakshi Temple is a very impressive structure with enormous gopurams (towers) containing stunning details.
  • Saint Mary’s Cathedral: Saint Mary’s Cathedral is a beautiful, gothic-style church that was initially built in 1841 but rebuilt in 1916. It’s also called The Church of Our Lady of Dolours, and it’s one of Tamil Nadu’s oldest churches.
  • Thirumalai Nayak Palace : Built by Tirumala Nayak in the 17th century, this palace was considered one of the wonders of the South during its heyday. Today, only the main palace is left, which is just a quarter of the original complex. It makes you wonder how huge the place must have been during the olden days.
  • Banana Market: Madurai’s banana market is another place I loved walking through. The merchants here sell over 16 varieties of bananas (I didn’t even know there were so many), including red ones (which I also didn’t know existed)!
  • Gandhi Memorial Museum: The Gandhi Memorial Museum is one of the seven Gandhi museums in India. This is the perfect place to head to if you would like to learn more about India’s most famous freedom fighter.

Where to stay in Madurai: Avenue 11 Premium Stays

Day 9, 10 & 11: Munnar

Tea plantations in Munar in Kerala, South India

🚍 On day 9, it’s time to head to Munnar, which is the tea capital of Kerala . Munnar is a 4 to 5-hour drive from Madurai and this hill town is famous for its lush green tea plantations and beautiful greenery.

Many locals flock to this hill station during the boiling-hot Indian Summer and it’s also one of India’s most popular honeymoon destinations.

But apart from spending your honeymoon here, Munnar is also the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature for a while.

🛕 Highlights of Munnar

  • Tea plantations and tea factories: One of the most popular things to do in Munnar is to pay a visit to one of its many tea factories and tea plantations. Here, you can learn more about how tea is harvested, see tea plantation workers at work and taste some fine tea.
  • Echo Point & Top Station: Echo Point (a lake where you can make echoing sounds) is a nice stop on the way to Top Station, the highest point in Munnar. The latter is a 40 km (24 mi) drive from Munnar and you will be rewarded with magnificent views if you head here!
  • Eravikulam National Park : Apart from its beautiful landscapes, this national park is also famous for being the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain goat. It’s also home to the Lakkom Waterfalls, which is easily accessible.

I have to admit that the downside of Munnar is that foreigners are not allowed to rent scooters here anymore, which makes it pretty difficult to visit things by yourself. However, there are plenty of tours or auto-rickshaws that can bring you around.

Where to stay in Munnar: Elephant Passage

Day 12, 13 & 14: Backwaters of Alleppey

Backwaters of Alleppey in Kerala

The backwaters of Alleppey are full of lush greenery, beautiful palm trees and sparkling rivers. This place is on many traveller’s Indian travel bucket lists . As you cruise these waters, you will witness the everyday life of the farmers and fishermen along the canals.

Alleppey is also the perfect destination to go canoeing, drink coconut water and simply relax. It’s a peaceful destination that’s perfect for nature lovers.

If you have the budget, you can also rent your own private houseboat for the night. This will allow you to cruise the backwaters by yourself and spend the night there too. I didn’t do this myself, as it’s quite expensive and I was backpacking in India alone .

Where to stay in Alleppey: Malayalam Lake Resort

🚍 Head to Fort Kochi on day 14. This city is a 1.5-hour drive from Alleppey.

Day 15: Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi, South India

On the last day of this South India itinerary, it’s time to explore Fort Kochi (or Cochin). This was the first European township in India .

Fort Kochi is an area in the city of Kochi and, before India’s independence, it was first controlled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and eventually the English.

This town is steeped in history and you will find plenty of colonial buildings, interesting museums and charming alleys here.

🛕 Highlights of Fort Kochi

  • Chinese fishing nets: The Chinese fishing nets (or Cheena vala) are one of Fort Kochi’s most famous tourist attractions. It’s said that Chinese explorer Zhang He introduced these nets to Kochi in the 14th or 15th century. Because of this, the nets stand as a symbol for the exchange of ideas that happened in the Indian subcontinent at that time.
  • St. Francis Church: This church was built in 1503 and it was the first Portuguese church in India. It’s inside this church that Portuguese explorer Vasco Di Gama (who died in Kochi) was originally buried, but his remains were later moved to Lisbon , Portugal.
  • Vasco da Gama Square: Its little restaurants make the Vasco da Gama Square a great place to spend the evening. Make sure to look up when you’re there, as this square is covered with beautiful rain trees.
  • Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica : This magnificent, Roman Catholic church was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Don’t forget to visit it inside too while you’re there, as it’s very nice!
  • Dutch Palace: The Dutch Palace (or Mattancherry Palace) was actually built by the Portuguese as a gift to the Kingdom of Cochin. However, when the Dutch took over, they renovated the palace, which is why it’s nicknamed “the Dutch Palace”. If you’re a history buff, then you will love this place! It exhibits many paintings, furniture, weapons, palanquins, Dutch maps and more.

And that was it! This was the last day of this itinerary for the South of India. Kochi is a nice place to end your journey in the South of India and it has an international airport.

Where to stay in Fort Kochi: Rossitta Wood Castle

Map and Itinerary

Day 1: Chennai Day 2: Mahabalipuram Day 3, 4 & 5: Pondicherry & Auroville Day 6: Thanjavur Day 7 & 8: Madurai Day 9, 10 & 11: Munnar Day 12, 13 & 14: Backwaters of Alleppey Day 15: Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi in Kerala, South India

Best Time to Visit the South of India

The best time to visit southern India is during the Winter season, from October to March . This is when the weather is at its best.

I was in Kerala and Tamil Nadu in April and May (the Summer months) and I’ve honestly never been so hot in my life. I seriously underestimated the humidity in this part of the country and would not recommend heading there at this time of the year.

June to September is the monsoon season and it can rain quite a bit at this time of the year. When I was in Kochi (in April), there were floods each time it rained and I found myself walking with water up to my knees more than once.

How to Get Around the South of India

You will find the best ways to get around below. This includes how to get from one city to another and how to get around in the cities.

How to get from one city to another

  • Bus: All of the places mentioned in this list can be reached by local bus. This is not the most comfortable way to travel but it’s absolutely doable if you’re on a budget!
  • Train: Not all of these destinations can be reached by train, but some can. You can take the train from Thanjavur to Madurai, for example.
  • Private car: The most comfortable (and fastest) way to get from one city to another is by taking a private car. This will be more expensive too, though.

I did everything by local bus and never booked anything in advance (which is necessary when you travel in the north of India). I just showed up at the bus station and asked around to find the right bus, and it worked fine.

How to get around cities

  • Auto-rickshaw: You will find these everywhere. I would recommend using the Ola app , though. It works just like Uber and will save you some money. Rickshaw drivers charge foreigners 10 times the local price, but if you use Ola, you will get a fair price immediately and won’t need to haggle.
  • Bus : There are plenty of local buses in the cities. This is the cheapest way to get around, but it requires a bit more planning than the rickshaw.
  • Private car: Another way to get around the cities is by private car, but this will be more expensive.

Banana market in Madurai, a nice stop on a South India itinerary

South India Itinerary: Final Thoughts

I hope that this itinerary will help you plan your trip to the beautiful South of India. I really loved exploring this part of the county. The South is less touristy than the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan in the North, and there are so many beautiful things to see here!

Of course, this part of the country has got more to offer, it’s HUGE, after all! However, this itinerary offers a nice mix of culture, history and nature, which is a varied introduction if you have 15 days to spend here.

Are you heading to the north of India too? Check out my Rajasthan itinerary next!

Golden Triangle on Wheels Indian Railways

Everything on our tour went like clockwork, except for the trains and this unfortunately can't be avoided. Our drivers and guides were always on time, mostly early and all were very knowlwdgeable re their cities and subjects. Our hotels were all very good and in good locations. The only improvement we advise is the cleanliness of the trains and the toilets, as while we were given clean linen for each trip the general condition of the inside of the carriages themselves and particularly the windows did leave a lot to be desired. Amit, our tour organiser was excellent and he had everything well under control. We would certainly recommend Yolo Tours/ Tour Radar to anyone who wants to see India in depth!

Taj Mahal & Agra Private Tour for 2 Days by Express Train

So, I kind started the tour with a bit of a rough start. My Delhi driver didn't seem to know how to get to the train station, then I felt pressed to take a tuk-tuk that I couldn't afford, to get dropped off. Then was pressed by him to get money from the ATM, which none of the three at the station worked for me. I was feeling pretty skeptical about the tour I had purchased and that I had been thrown out there on my own,but my tour guide in Agra, Faz, quickly decreased my worries and immediately brighted my mood for the rest of the time I spent with him on the tour. He pleasantly welcomed me to Agra with a beautiful flower garland and was very professional and polite. He spoke perfectly clear English and was easy to understand. He clearly has a lot of knowledge, passion and pride in the historical, religious and artistic beauty of the cities sites. He had a lot of special insights and knew best how to plan things. He was great at both offering to take pictures and at taking them, some unique and fun. Additionally, he was very considerate and carried my bag and sweatshirt for me so I could enjoy taking my own pictures and not have to deal with them, such a gentleman. He was very easy to talk to and open to questions. As mentioned earlier, I had cash/ATM issues and he stepped right up until we were able to resolve this, paying for entry fees. Then he was more than patient when this unfortunately took several stops to successfully resolve. I really felt he went above and beyond. He was very kind and understanding, despite my embarrassment that this couldn't get easily resolved. He had an engaging, fun, but very professional quality. I was highly impressed. He's the most delightful and professional guide and I highly recommend him. I was very saddened that I would be getting a new tour guide as he was wonderful. He always wanted to make sure I was enjoying the sites and was feeling good with how things were going. Definitely a top notch professional, highly knowledgeable and great character. I absolutely loved my tour with Faz. I'd give him over 5☆☆☆☆ My guide in Fatehpur sikri, was also quite pleasant. I was only with him for a few hours in the city, but he guided me through things well and was helpful. He had a great knowledge of the area and seemed to enjoy the history. He even helped me get rid of an obnoxious peddler, which was appreciated. I did however feel that he was a bit pushy in a shop we went into and I spent more money than planned/could afford. My driver, Chetan, was always punctual and I had no complaints. Although, he didn't speak much he was always polite and professional when he did. I really appreciated him expertly maunvering through all the crazy traffic. He did amazing. ☆☆☆☆☆ The hotel was fabulous and had a beautiful rooftop pool and spa. You could even see the Taj Mahal from there (just barely through the smoke). The restaurant and breakfast were both good. No complaints at all. The train was fine, not luxury or similar to US. Food was not bad considering it was train food, which I compared to being similar to plane food. Everything was great really, except my drop off in Delhi and my pickup in Delhi were I never connected with the driver and ended having to pay to take a chilly ride in a tuk-tuk. They did try and contact me when I arrived in Delhi (my service is inconsistent),but it would have been better to have this information before Ieft Agra. I believe this would have negated the problem as could directly go where I needed to go. This was done before I left for Agra, why not Delhi. So, the guides, hotel, driver in Agra and train I had no issues. Just a bit with the drop off driver in Delhi and confusion over pickup, but overall good tour.

Amritsar Tour From Delhi By Shatabdi Train Tour

Amritsar Tour From Delhi By Shatabdi Train

We Have no any other option to take the Amritsar Tour from Delhi by Shatabdi Train and I must say, it was an incredible experience. The tour was well-organized and everything went smoothly from start to finish. The journey from Delhi to Amritsar on the Shatabdi train was comfortable and convenient. The train was clean and well-maintained, and the seats were spacious and comfortable. The on-board service was also excellent, with friendly and efficient staff catering to our needs. Upon arrival in Amritsar, we were greeted by our tour guide who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the city. He gave us a brief introduction to Amritsar and its history, and then we proceeded to visit the Golden Temple. The Golden Temple was a sight to behold. The magnificent structure, the serene atmosphere, and the devotion of the people made it a truly spiritual experience. Our guide took us around the temple and explained the significance of each part of the complex. We also got to witness the langar (community meal) which is served to all visitors for free. After the Golden Temple, we visited the Jallianwala Bagh, a memorial to the tragic massacre that took place there in 1919. Our guide gave us a detailed account of the events that took place and it was a somber and moving experience. The tour also included a visit to the Wagah Border, where we witnessed the famous Beating Retreat ceremony. It was a thrilling experience to see the soldiers from both India and Pakistan perform their drill with such precision and patriotism. The tour ended with a visit to the local markets where we got to indulge in some shopping and try out some delicious Punjabi cuisine. Our guide took us to some of the best street food stalls and we were not disappointed. Overall, the Amritsar Tour from Delhi by Shatabdi Train was a memorable experience. The well-planned itinerary, comfortable transportation, knowledgeable guide, and the beautiful city of Amritsar all made it a perfect trip. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the vibrant culture and history of Amritsar.

I enjoyed this tour very much. It was a very easy way to get around the Golden Triangle. Meetups with drivers and guides and delivery to hotels and railway stations was impeccable, very reassuring for me travelling solo. The itinerary was quite dense, making good use of the time available in each city. My brain was buzzing by day three. All three guides were excellent with good english, knowledgeable and flexible. Drivers also were excellent, careful and not cowboys. Hotels were mostly adequate with the Agra Hotel being very nice. Trains were fine, with meals booked where available or available to buy. The Agra to Jaipur train was a sleeper Two tier so comfortable for the few hours of evening travel. All up, an excellent trip. Recommended.

Taj Mahal is always a dream to visit. And finally I got the chance on my business trip to India. When i had a one day free then i have searched the same day tour and preferred to visit the Taj Mahal by train rather than by car. I was picked on time by the driver, got into the train safely and driver helped me to find the seat and coach. On arrival at Agra , other driver and guide came to pick me up then we drive to the Taj Mahal and the Taj Mahal is just awesome I was speechless the time I saw the white building. Our guide was such a nice person he was kept helping me everywhere. In the evening i was dropped back to the railway station and guide helped me to find out the coach and seat then i arrived in Delhi and driver came to pick me up. Entire tour went the way it was planned as per the tour itinerary and it was a great tour.

What people love about Train & Rail Tours in India

The idea of travelling by train to different cities and getting picked up by different tour guides was a great idea. Tour guides had different strengths and weaknesses. Overall good experience although a little on the pricy side.

So, the guides, hotel, driver in Agra and train I had no issues. Just a bit with the drop off driver in Delhi and confusion over pickup, but overall good tour.

How to put south india’s top backpacker cities into a one month itinerary.

Backpacking South India itinerary. One month in India route for first trip to India travel blog

How to spend one month in India:

  • 2-3 days in Mumbai
  • 3-4 days in Goa
  • 2-3 days in Hampi
  • 1-2 days in Mysore
  • 1-2 days in Alleppey
  • 1-2 days in Varkala

So these days don’t add up to a month.

The number of days to spend in each city is SO flexible!

This gives you extra time in case you decide you want to stay in one place longer.

This also gives you time to add in extra nearby places along the way that interest you.

But listed numbers are just to give you an idea.

You may find that you want to spend more time in each place because you like the vibe, or maybe you’re ready to move on sooner!

But I really think that if it’s your first trip to India and you go to all of these places, you will leave India feeling like you need to come back to India for more!

You know, like spending a few weeks in Rajasthan . 😉

Getting around India by bus

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by bus. One month in India route

Bus can be a reasonable way to travel around India.

I have been on plenty of overnight buses and daytime local government buses in India alone, and I think it’s a fine way to travel.

Overnight bus

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by bus. Overnight sleeper bus in India. One month in India route

When you’re backpacking India on a budget, overnight bus travel can be a good way to get between many of the cities because of the longer distance.

To give you an idea of what overnight travel on a sleeper bus might be like, see examples of travel by bus in South India to Kerala , to Madurai , and from Mumbai .

And be sure to check the basics to know about sleeper bus travel in India !

You can search for bus timings on redbus , and you can book your bus ticket that way too.

Overnight AC buses might cost around 700 rupees (US$10).

Daytime local bus

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by bus. Local bus travel in India. One month in India route

If you’re going a shorter distance of 2-6 hours, then traveling by local bus can also be a reasonable option.

For these types of buses, you don’t need to book in advance, and you’ll pay for the bus ticket once you’re on the bus.

To give you an idea of what local bus travel might be like, see an example of travel by bus in South India in Goa from Palolem to Margao .

A 4-6 hour local bus might cost around 100-150 rupees (US$2).

Getting around India by train

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by train. One month in India route

Train can also be a reasonable way to travel around India.

I have also been on a number of overnight trains and daytime general class trains in India alone, and again, I think it’s a fine way to travel.

Overnight train

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by train. Overnight sleeper train in India. One month in India route

But given the distance of most of the places you’ll likely be traveling, it will be best to reserve your seat ahead of time for many of the train routes.

This is more or less mostly because certain routes could be good to choose overnight train travel.

That’s because generally speaking, trains in India do sometimes sell out well in advance.

For comfort on the train (well, as comfortable as regular trains in India get!), you’ll want to book a train ticket in AC class – 1AC, 2AC, or 3AC. (The numbers indicating how many berths/sleeper seats are on one side.)

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Sleeper train in India - 3ac, 2ac, 1ac. One month in India route

But sleeper class (which is non-AC) can work out fine too, and it’s cheaper.

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Sleeper train in India - non-AC. One month in India route

To see more of what a train looks like inside, have a look at this AC train ride from Goa to Hampi .

A non-AC sleeper class overnight train might cost around 300 rupees (US$5). An AC overnight train might cost around 1,000-2,000 rupees (US$15-30).

Daytime general class train

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by train - general class train. One month in India route

It is also possible to travel by train in India and buy your ticket on the day of, but this is generally best for shorter train journeys.

That’s because you can also travel by train in general class without any specific seat reservations.

You would buy your ticket at the train station on the day you want to get to your next destination.

But general class means there are no seat reservations, and that means there’s a chance that the train will be crowded and you may not be able to get a seat.

For longer train journeys, you might want a seat reservation for comfort.

Also keep in mind that generally speaking, trains in India are known for delays.

For examples of when a general class train ticket can work out well in South India, see how I went from Gokarna to Goa and  Kerala to Kanyakumari .

A 2-3 hour general class train might cost 30 rupees (US$0.50).

Whether you’re going for overnight train or daytime train, you can search for train timings through trainman .

Getting around India by ferry

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by ferry. One month in India route

There are also a number of places in India in which a short boat ride might be a way to get around!

This can make it a unique way to get around.

These might be simple 5-10 minute boat rides to simply get across the water when you’re exploring a specific area, and it might cost you like 10 rupees (US$0.15).

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by ferry. One month in India route

Many times you can take a bicycle or a scooter with you on the boat.

Some of these commuter ferries also accept regular vehicles too, like a rickshaw or a car.

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by ferry. One month in India route

Or some ferries in India can be a boat ride of several hours too.

I’ve taken ferries in Goa, ferries in Hampi , and ferries near Gokarna, and these were 5-10 minute boat rides.

I’ve also taken a number of ferries in Kerala , and these were generally to travel a bit further, sometimes a few hours.

Getting around India by rickshaw

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by auto rickshaw, tuk tuk. One month in India route

When you are in any given city in India, taking an auto rickshaw might be an effective way to get around the city.

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by auto rickshaw, tuk tuk. One month in India route

How much you pay for a rickshaw will completely depend on the distance you’re going, but you might pay something like 50 rupees to 200 rupees (US$1-3) for a single rickshaw ride.

Other times, simply walking might be a good way to get around a city!

In bigger cities, it’s possible to get around by Uber or Ola ride sharing taxi services too.

Where to stay in India

Backpacking South India itinerary. Where to stay in India. Best hostels in India. One month in India route

India’s backpacker culture is expanding, and this means that there are now a good number of hostels in India to choose from.

There are many hostels with AC dorm beds, and these might be around 500 rupees (US$7) per bed.

And see what cities you can find hostels in Goa and hostels in Kerala .

There may be some popular backpacker cities that don’t have a huge variety of hostels, but in these places there are still decent budget accommodation options.

There are a few backpacker hostel chains across India now, with Zostel being among the most popular.

What are the best things to do in South India?!

Backpacking mumbai.

If you’re looking for a long international flight to get to India, chances are Mumbai will be among the cheapest cities in South India to fly into.

And Mumbai can also make a nice gateway to India.

I think a lot of being in Mumbai is more or less about just being there.

So no matter what you choose to do, you’ll be sure to get a fine intro to Mumbai!

But in case you’re looking for specific things to do, many of the main “tourist attractions” are around South Mumbai.

If you are looking to take in some Mumbai nightlife, you may look into staying around the neighborhood of Bandra.

Next up: Mumbai to Goa

Going from Mumbai to Goa can be a solid overnight trip.

You can get there by bus or train, but bus might be a little bit more convenient as it generally doesn’t require as much planning in advance.

Backpacking Goa

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Best things to do in Goa India. One month in India route for first trip to India travel tips

The state of Goa is known as a top beach destination in India, and it’s also a popular backpacking destination.

You’ll want to choose between 3 main areas of Goa to stay:

  • North Goa beaches
  • South Goa beaches

…Or you can spend more time in Goa by getting a taste of all 3 areas!

In general, especially during season time (generally speaking which is outside the summer monsoon months)…

North Goa is known for more of a party scene…

South Goa is known to be a bit quieter than the north…

And then Goa’s capital of Panjim will give you more of a taste into the state’s Portuguese history with the buildings all around.

When you head away from the main tourist strips of any of Goa’s beach towns, you can start to get a taste of Goa’s quiet village roads, along with cute colorful homes too.

Although Goa is primarily known for its beaches, if you want more than just beaches, Goa can be a cute area to explore!

There are also a number of forts in Goa that offer ocean views too.

Next up: Goa to Hampi

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by train or bus. Goa to Hampi train. One month in India route

A popular way to get from Goa to Hampi is by overnight bus.

I decided to go by train during the day though (7.5 hours), mostly because that gives you a chance to see Goa’s famous waterfalls, Dudhsagar Falls, directly from the train!

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Getting around India by train or bus. Goa to Hampi train with waterfalls. One month in India route

There is no train station directly in Hampi, so once you reach the nearby train station, you’ll need to take a rickshaw or bus to Hampi .

Backpacking Hampi

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Best things to do in Hampi India. One month in India route for first trip to India travel tips

If you like ancient ruins, Hampi is not to be missed!

One of the main things to do in Hampi is to visit the various UNESCO world heritage sites that are spread out in the area.

There are ruins to be seen all around, and there are constant scenes of boulders and stones all around Hampi.

There are basically 2 sides to Hampi, with a river dividing the 2 sides. You can cross the river by boat.

Backpacking Mysore

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Best things to do in Mysore India. One month in India route for first trip to India travel tips

Mysore is most famous for its palace.

This can also be a break-up point to get from Hampi to Kerala… which is basically one of the main reasons I passed through.

But if you’re looking for more things to do, there do seem to be places to explore around the city for a couple of days!

South India travel in pictures: Best things to do in Mysore

Mysore palace.

Next up: Mysore to Kerala

There are no direct trains from Mysore to Kerala – at least central Kerala and south Kerala where the main Kerala backpacker destinations  are.

I found the easiest to go through Bangalore.

If you look at a map, this will look like you’re going out of the way a bit.

But I felt like this would be the most convenient as Bangalore is a major transit hub.

Being a major transit hub means that there are more connections available to go to different places, including from Mysore and to Kerala.

So I went from Mysore to Bangalore in the morning (2.5 hours), rested up in the waiting room at the Bangalore train station, and then took the evening overnight train from Bangalore to Alleppey (13 hours).

From Bangalore, you can also find overnight buses Wayanad and Munnar if you are interested in hill stations in Kerala.

Backpacking Alleppey

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Best things to do in Alleppey Kerala India. One month in India route for first trip to India travel tips

Kerala is famous for its backwaters, and  Alleppey is THE hub of the Kerala backwaters .

This means that you have a few different options for experiencing the backwaters.

You can go by canoe , kayak , ferry , houseboat, or even cycling on a road along the waters.

And after you’ve gotten your fill of the backwaters, you can finish it off with more things to do in Alleppey by relaxing with views of Alleppey Beach at a beachside guesthouse  or beachside hostel , along with eating at a beachfront restaurant !

You can totally make it a perfect one day in Alleppey .

Where to stay in Alleppey

I’ve stayed at the following backpacker places to stay in Alleppey that I can recommend:

  • Zostel Alleppey
  • Funky Art Beach House

Next up: Alleppey to Varkala

There are a number of buses and trains you can take to get to Varkala from Alleppey.

The bus will likely take around 4-5 hours, and the train will likely take around 3 hours.

Since this is a shorter distance, you can go for the train in general class so you won’t have to book a train ticket in advance.

You just show up to the Alleppey train station on the day you want to go to Varkala and buy a ticket before you board the train.

Again, taking the train in general class does mean that you do have a chance of not being able to get a seat.

Backpacking Varkala

Backpacking South India itinerary, route. Best things to do in Varkala Kerala India. One month in India route for first trip to India travel tips

Varkala is known as one of the beach towns in Kerala.

It’s also famous for the restaurants and accommodations that you can find on the cliff.

Kerala is also the birthplace of ayurveda, which is basically using natural herbs and remedies for treating chronic illnesses (and non-chronic), as well as to stay healthy.

You can find many yoga retreats with ayurveda  across Kerala.

You’ll also be able to find a place to get an ayurvedic massage in Varkala pretty easily. There will be beach resorts that offer them, and you can also find places as you walk along the Varkala cliff.

More places to visit in India

If you want to continue onwards, consider making your next stop the southern tip of India with a train from Kerala to Kanyakumari .

So from Varkala, you may consider, in this order:

  • Kanyakumari
  • Pondicherry
  • Mahabalipuram

Or if you want to fly out of Kerala, the nearest airport to Varkala is the Trivandrum Airport. This airport is around 1.5 hours from Varkala.

Another popular airport in Kerala for backpackers is the Cochin Airport. This airport is around 1-1.5 hours from Fort Cochin, and around 2-2.5 hours from Alleppey.

For the last 15 years (with a brief exception for the COVID-19 pandemic), my family and I have celebrated Christmas and New Year’s abroad in Africa or Asia. From Madagascar, Indonesia, and Tanzania to Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore, I’ve gotten used to spending two weeks during the holidays in warm, muggy climates, swapping coats and boots for sandals and flowy dresses .

This year, my family and I spent two weeks bouncing around India’s southwestern state of Kerala, nicknamed “God’s own country” for the richness of its natural beauty . From misty mountain towns and river-framed cities to urban metropolises and the roaring sandy coast of the Arabian Sea, the a trip filled with constant movement and changing climates, requiring gear, accessories, and clothing that could accommodate everything (think: versatile travel bags , one-and-done outfits , and more).

And, as someone who is prone to overpacking, I wanted to challenge myself to only bring a carry-on suitcase and a personal item in an effort to travel light — a skill that I have yet to master since becoming a travel writer. These are the 14 travel essentials that topped my packing list, and ensured that my whirlwind ,two-week trip was smooth and effortless – even with just a carry-on.

I had three requirements when packing my wardrobe for my trip: stylish, breathable, and modest. These Amazon long-sleeved bohemian-style dresses (thankfully) satisfied them all. As someone just under 5 feet, 1 inches, I was initially worried that the length and oversized style would dwarf my small frame, but I was pleasantly surprised when they only came up to mid-shin. I purchased three styles and colors, and wore them while exploring the city of Kochi and the mountain town of Munnar.

Despite being long-sleeved, they were breathable and comfortable, and they helped me survive the oppressive Indian heat with optimal sun coverage. The dress comes in 35 different color and print variations that can be worn during the summer, fall, or spring, so it’s a versatile wardrobe staple for any traveler.

Topbag Family Passport Holder

I’m a triple citizen of Italy, Ireland, and the United States, and, as an anxious flier, I always travel with all three of my passports, just in case. That’s why I use this family passport holder to safely secure my three passports and other important documents in one easy-to-reach place.

It can hold up to six passports, which is convenient for families or friends traveling together. The passport holder also comes with a cash pocket and six card slots, which I use to stash away my other forms of identification, bills, loose change, past flight tickets, and my Italian SIM card for when I return home to Rome. But that’s not all: it also has a strap that you can wear around your wrist and a back pocket large enough to fit an iPhone, so you can have all of your major belongings on you in one place (and it doubles as a secure sling bag if you're not a fan of big purses). It helps make the chaos of traveling just a little more organized.

Prite Corduroy Tote Bag

I collect tote bags, especially for when I travel, so when I received this large, olive-green corduroy one for Christmas, it was a match made in tote heaven. It has a zippered closure that I appreciated for keeping my valuable items from tumbling out. And, for those who love pockets – well, you’re in luck: The tote has a large outside pocket that can close magnetically, two interior slip pockets, and one ample interior zippered pocket which I used to secure my wallet, passports, and keys.

I carried this tote around with me everywhere during my trip, and was able to fit my passports, sunglasses, Kindle Fire, lip balms, earphones, chargers, mints, a 32-ounce HydroJug tumbler, and deodorant, all with plenty of room to spare. The large 18-inch by 15-inch by 4-inch tote is made with durable corduroy and is sturdy enough to carry heavier items like books and laptops, which is what I’ve been using it for since my trip.

VibiVenezia Women's Timeless Rosso Velvet Slippers

Vibivenezia

Friulane, or furlane, are popular Venetian velvet slippers that date as far back as the 19th century. They’re a staple in every Italian woman’s closet and add a pop of color and playful elegance to any outfit, which is why I wear mine all the time when I travel. They’re also very comfortable, especially since I had my favorite cobbler in Rome add another layer of rubber to the soles for extra cushioning.

I love the burst of color that they give my outfits, and my orange pair paired especially well with one of the long-sleeved dresses that I purchased for my trip in shades of yellow and orange. I buy most of my friulane from small boutiques when I’m home in Italy, but VibiVenezia is a popular Italian brand that offers the slippers in a literal rainbow of colors and styles. No need to worry – they ship to the United States, so you can wear a small piece of Italy on your feet, too.

HydroJug 32-ounce Tumbler

I’m especially horrible at remembering to drink water during long flights, which is likely why I always feel like a wretched, dried husk after traveling. I’ve gotten better at hydrating myself since purchasing a mini, 32-ounce HydroJug tumbler. I usually fill it using water fountains at the airport to ensure that I have enough to keep my body happy while up in the air. This was especially important during my many long flights to India, and even more so upon arriving, as my family and I had to be careful of the drinking water we consumed.

The hotels we stayed at provided bottles of purified drinking water, which I used to fill up my HydroJug while we were out exploring. This not only ensured that I was staying hydrated in the unforgiving heat, but also that I was consuming safe drinking water. HydroJugs come with the option to purchase a sleeve and strap that can be worn around your person for a hands-free experience, which is especially useful for trips where you’re moving around a lot.

Asia Palomba

Longbida Women's Cropped Denim Jacket

While the majority of my trip called for a summer wardrobe, there was one occasion that required slightly warmer attire. My family and I spent two days in Munnar, a mountain town nestled between sprawling emerald-green tea plantations and lush forests. The higher altitude was pleasantly chilly, especially at night and in the early morning. Although it was a welcome respite from the heat, I needed to stay warm, and my cropped, faded denim jacket did just the trick.

Although mine can technically be classified as “vintage,” as it was passed down to me from my mother, I found this affordable version at Amazon that comes in 16 different colors and patterns and is easy to pack (or wear on a plane if you're trying to save luggage space).

Havaianas Mini Bag

I spent a week soaking up some much-needed vitamin D rays in the coastal town of Kovalam, and this water-resistant Havaianas mini bag was wrapped around my wrist every day. Made with durable silicone, this small, colorful bag is a staple of mine for any beach outing. I mostly use it to safely store my iPhone from sand and water, but it’s also doubled as a no-frills purse for my wallets, keys, and lip balms. It was gifted to me by my Brazilian friend nearly a decade ago, and it’s accompanied me all over the world, from Greece and Sardinia to Thailand and Indonesia – and it still looks brand new.

Sun Bum Lip Balm SPF 30 3-pack

As someone who is unfortunately prone to lip blisters after prolonged exposure to the sun, I always have SPF lip balms on deck. Sun Bum’s lip balms have recently become a favorite of mine, not just for their high protection, but also for their tropical flavors that release a burst of summer whenever I twist off their caps. Each gluten-free and vegan lip balm is packed with aloe vera, cocoa butter, and vitamin E, so they roll on super smooth and keep my lips soft and hydrated throughout the day.

I bought this three-pack ahead of my trip, and almost used them all down to the nub. Part of my excessive use may have been because of how nice they smelled (and tasted), but regardless, I was relieved that my laying in the sun like a lizard didn’t result in any sun blisters.

Anrabess Women’s Loose Spaghetti Strap Jumpsuit

Jumpsuits are one of my favorite go-to summer outfits for a breathable, comfortable, and stylish look. I have a bordeaux-colored one that I purchased years ago from Urban Outfitters that I wear to near tatters every summer for these reasons. I, of course, brought this jumpsuit on my trip with me and paired it with black lace-up sandals for more formal events such as New Year’s Eve. For most of my trip, however, flip-flops were my standard footwear.

While the exact jumpsuit I own can’t be found online anymore, there is this affordable Amazon option that has more than 2,000 five-star ratings. Available in 25 colors and patterns with sizes ranging from S to 2XL, it's an especially versatile and traveler-loved staple that I’m looking into trying myself once summer comes around.

Miady Dual USB Portable Chargers 2-pack

These pocket-sized dual USB chargers have been a boon during my travels, and my trip through India was no exception. There were a couple of days when my family and I spent hours traveling between cities, so these portable chargers helped juice up our phones throughout the day. I’ve also used them to power up other devices such as my Kindle Fire and iPad, so it's an especially helpful travel essential to always have on you.

Available in a variety of colors, each charger has two USB ports that can charge two devices at the same time, so they’re useful for traveling with friends and family. But don’t just take it from me — these durable, slim portable chargers have over 75,000 five-star ratings at Amazon.

Tessan Universal Travel Adapter

Any frequent flier knows the value of a good travel adapter, and this Amazon one is one of my favorites. The plug works in over 150 countries, from Italy and Dubai to China and New Zealand — so you know that you’ll always be covered no matter how far you travel. It also comes with four USB ports that can charge up to five devices at a time. Because of its versatility, I was able to easily share it with members of my family, which significantly cut down the amount of arguments over outlets that we had during our trip. Compact and lightweight, it can easily fit into any carry-on or personal item, which is why it’s always one of the travel essentials I pack first.

Twelve South AirFly Bluetooth Wireless Audio Transmitter

I can never sleep on airplanes, so watching movies is one of the best ways for me to pass the long hours. The earphones they hand out on the airplanes have always bothered my ears, not to mention the subpar audio quality they provide that makes watching anything a frustrating experience. That’s why I was intrigued when I came across this traveler-loved, pocket-sized bluetooth audio transmitter . The Airfly device seamlessly connects your wireless earphones to the airplane’s seatback television (and can also be used to connect to tablets, hotel gym TVs, etc.), which has vastly improved my international flight experience.

The many flights and hours it took to reach India literally flew by (pun intended) because of this small but mighty device. I currently have the device that can only connect one pair of headphones, but I’m looking into purchasing the dual AirFly version for when I travel with my partner.

Béis The Mini Weekender Bag

This Mini Weekender has quickly become my favorite carry-on for international trips since I received it for Christmas. Durable, compact, and sleek, it’s perfect for maximizing your limited packing space when only traveling with carry-on items — there’s a reason why it’s universally loved by flight attendants .

It especially came in handy when returning from India, as it was able to hold the majority of the souvenirs that I had purchased during my two weeks there. Its structured bottom shoe compartment, which is trimmed with stylish vegan leather, was useful for holding all of my sandals, slippers, and flip-flops, which freed up much-needed space in my carry-on suitcase. I have trips to Ireland, Italy, Portugal, and Morocco planned within the next few months, and I’m looking into using compression packing cubes to maximize the Mini Weekender’s potential.

Ray-Ban Classic Aviator Sunglasses

The Ray-Ban classic aviators have been my go-to pair of sunglasses since I was 13, so it should come as no surprise that they came to India with me. They’re lightweight, easy to pack, and stylish — and, not to mention, great at shielding my eyes from the harsh sunlight. I have the gold-tinted shades that I chose to match my coloring and the gold jewelry that I always wear (us Italians really do love our gold).

Based on my experience, Ray-Ban sunglasses are worth the investment. I’ve had my pair for the last 13 years, and aside from a few small nicks, they still look brand new. But for those who don’t want to splurge, there’s this affordable Amazon-loved pair from the brand Pro Acme that’ll give you that same "Top Gun" feel.
