"Nimoy has said that the character of Spock, which he played twelve to fourteen hours a day, five days a week, influenced his personality in his private life. Each weekend during the original run of the series, he would be in character throughout Saturday and into Sunday, behaving more like Spock than himself—more logical, more rational, more thoughtful, less emotional, and finding calm in every situation. It was only on Sunday in the early afternoon that Spock's influence on his behavior would fade off and he would feel more himself again—only to start the cycle over again on Monday morning.Years after the show, he observed Vulcan speech patterns, social attitudes, patterns of logic, and emotional suppression in his own behavior."

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy have one of the most fascinating dynamics in pop culture, and these memes perfectly sum up its iconic traits.

As much as Kirk and Spock have a friendship for the sci-fi ages, the trio of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is one of the most unbreakable bonds in pop culture. Wherever the captain of the USS Enterprise and his First Officer went gallivanting, the ship's doctor (and their ornery friend) was on hand to clean up their messes (and themselves) with his trademark sarcastic commentary.In truth, none of these men set their phasers to stun when it came to firing insults, but any one of them would take a blast for the others in a second. They represented the best of Starfleet principles with loyalty, duty, and friendship.

They Each Had Strong Personalities

Each man had a strong personality, with his own distinct views and perspectives, and yet they all managed to get along. Unmistakable traits of McCoy's included passionate devotion to the medical profession and a short temper, while Spock was reserved and logical, and Kirk was charismatic and dramatic.

Though their personalities clashed with one another, they all stood side by side against mutual threats. McCoy might have agreed with Spock's logic but not his lack of emotional intuition, yet they could both work alongside each other in a (mostly) civilized manner.

Kirk Intervened When McCoy Insulted Spock's Vulcan Heritage

As progressive and egalitarian as Star Trek could be, especially during the '60s, McCoy had no qualms about mocking Spock's Vulcan heritage. Kirk would often interject with a few choice words, encouraging them to focus on their similarities rather than their differences.

McCoy Traded Barbs With Both Kirk & Spock

There has always been a comfortable curtness to the interactions between McCoy, Kirk, and Spock as much as there has been an undeniable warmth. After facing so many challenges together, they can predict each other's actions and thoughts, including certain sarcastic responses.

In this meme using a scene in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , Kirk asks who Bones would save if both he and Spock were drowning, and the doctor gives a snappy reply befitting his exasperation with such a hypothetical. The movie may not have been the best film, but it had several great character moments between the three of them and some of McCoy's best quotes bonding over the doc's "secret ingredient" of Tennessee Whiskey.

McCoy Didn't Always Understand Kirk & Spock's Devotion

By the time Kirk became captain of the Enterprise, he'd already been friends with McCoy a long time, to the point where Bones felt at liberty to give the young captain advice and Kirk sought it out in the experienced medical officer. It was only begrudgingly that McCoy allowed Spock the space to enter into his own friendship with Kirk.

Time and again, however, he watched as the Vulcan sacrificed his life for Kirk and vice versa, affording the bond his respect.

McCoy, Spock, And Kirk Went On The Most Away Missions

Captain Kirk was the poster boy for Starfleet trying to prevent its commanding officers from leading away missions, but if he was beaming down to an M-class planet, it was more than likely that Spock and McCoy were going to follow him.

This also extended to if any of the trio was in trouble, like in the episode "City On The Edge Of Forever," where Kirk and Spock try to locate a manic Bones on a planet that resembles Earth in the 1930s just before major social changes. They were central to every story because of their chemistry together even if it became part of a narrative imperative.

They Got Into A Lot Of Trouble

Despite being some of the most important officers on the USS Enterprise, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy often got into a lot of mischief. Yet whenever they ran afoul of Starfleet High Command, they would always cover for one another to preserve their reputations, proving their loyalty to the friendship.

The Kirk Of My Spock Is My Friend

Once McCoy saw how close Kirk and Spock had become, he grew to appreciate the Vulcan's many talents aboard the Enterprise, and gradually grew to be his friend. During the episode "Amok Time," when Spock is going through the Pon Farr ceremony, he's permitted to invite friends, and he selects both Kirk and McCoy.

McCoy is honored to attend and is sure to express this to Spock lest there be any question about how he truly views the Vulcan beneath a veneer of sarcasm. They might have liked to argue with one another, but when Spock needs Bones present, he's there to offer his support, which is why it remains one of the best episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series to rewatch for fans of their friendship.

McCoy Tried To Make Spock Challenge His Vulcan Side

One of the things Spock and McCoy fought about the most was Spock's embrace of his Vulcan heritage at the expense of his human one. As someone trained in the field of psychology, Bones recognized that Spock had deep-seated trauma around his mixed heritage, and had obsessed about his Vulcan ancestry in order to overcome the bullying he suffered as a child.

As Spock tried to suppress his emotions, McCoy witnessed a friend in more and more inner turmoil, which could sometimes result in physical pain. McCoy encouraged Spock to release his emotions in a healthy way, and ultimately embrace his uniqueness by realizing the emptiness of life based on pure logic.

They Upset Each Other From Time To Time

Due to Kirk's flagrant disregard for regulations and preference to trust his gut instinct, McCoy's philosophical and sometimes overly emotional approach to problem-solving, and Spock's consistent trait of obsessing with logic and reason at the expense of intuition, each friend upset the other from time to time.

In this meme, it's difficult to tell which person the other is referring to; is McCoy talking about Kirk? Is Spock talking about McCoy? Are they both despairing about Kirk? The answer is yes to all of the above.

McCoy Liked To Troll Spock

While McCoy's trolling of Spock can be interpreted as mean-spirited, often it forced the Vulcan to see the error of adhering too stringently to logic or viewing it as the superior lens through which to solve problems.
