STAR TREK SPIRITS Debuts with ‘Romulan Ale’ Whiskey and Vodka

Connect with trekcore.

The team who have been bringing fans  Star Trek Wines releases for the past several years — including real-world bottles of Chateau Picard, Klingon bloodwine, Cardassian Kanar, and more — are now moving into the world of hard alcohol with the arrival of Star Trek Spirits .

Launching at StarTrekSpirits.com with the long-waited Romulan Ale bottle first seen in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , two blue options are the inaugural offerings from Star Trek Spirits .

star trek romulan ale whiskey

The first is a dark blue Rye Whiskey, describe as “a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, giving a sweetness and flavor complexity after aging newly-charred white oak barrels.”

“We utilized a 150-year-old yeast strain, used in some extraordinary and well-known Rye whiskeys. After aging for 2+ years just across the Ohio River from Kentucky, it was ready for bottling.   But we took it a step further with second distilling process, creating an ultra-smooth finish, even at a very high bottle proof. In collaboration with a world-renowned food scientist, we opted for a rare and technologically advanced vacuum distillation process. Distillation under vacuum creates lower temperatures, enhancing both flavor and aromatics. We’d like to think that distillation in the future would also be done in similar low-pressure environments. As it turns out, distillation in a vacuum happens to make great whiskey!   The Rye graininess is apparent in the nose and initial taste on the tongue. Then comes that sweet brown note of vanilla creaminess and sweetness. It has the spicy peppery notes that all high rye whiskeys are known for in the finish, but ours is muted with dried fig, raisin and cherry fruitiness.”

The Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey can be ordered now for $85 USD per bottle, with shipments expected to begin in December 2022.

The second release is a lighter-blue colored Vodka product , with “a hint of corn sweetness, with higher notes from a plump smell of good wheat grain.”

“Distilled from premium Midwest grain, the vodka is produced in the Napa Area, distilled four times in a stainless steel still, to 192 proof to ensure a clean distillation of only the heart of the vodka then cut to 80 proofs for bottling.   Put together by a family of thirteen generation distillers, there are no trace of off notes or the smell of rubbing alcohol that many vodkas suffer from. A carefully done distillation. Touch of corn sweetness with the higher notes from a plump smell of good wheat grain.   Our Romulan Ale Blue Vodka has a fantastic electric blue appearance, with no sediment whatsoever. On swirling, it leaves a phenomenal blue coat on the inside of the glass with long thin legs. Wonderful bright appearance.   Unlike several other vodkas, this one is not highly filtered so you have a great body and mouthfeel that would otherwise be lost.

Fans who sign up for the  Star Trek Sprits  mailing list on their website will also get a complimentary vodka recipe for the “Quantum Singularity Cocktail,” named “in honor of the fuel source for Romulan ships.”

The Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey can be ordered now for $75 USD per bottle, with shipments expected to begin in December 2022.

New Star Trek Spirit Boldly Goes Where Rye Whiskey Hasn’t Gone Before

  • by Gary Carter
  • December 7, 2022

Ever since its first appearance in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Romulan Ale became a staple of bars across the galaxy. But art has become real life, as upstart Star Trek Spirits has released a Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey.

In the Star Trek universe, Romulan Ale is known as a highly-potent beverage of Romulan origin with its characteristic crystal blue color. The Romulan drink was declared Illegal by the Federation in early 2280.

Even as the Federation attempted to abolish It, Romulan Ale remained a popular and sought-after spirit, standing the test of time.

Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey

Star Trek Spirits’ new release is literally years in the making, and the limited edition, individually numbered bottles of Romulan Ale Rye are available now.

A social media post from the spirits company noted that the rye whiskey used in Romulan Ale Rye was designed from start to finish to be steeped in history and technology.

The whiskey makers started with ultra-premium rye whiskey, a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. They were seeking a sweetness and flavor complexity after the spirit aged in newly-charred white oak barrels.

Next, the distillers used a 150-year-old yeast strain, found in several well-known rye whiskeys, then took it a step further with a second distilling process.

In collaboration with food scientists, the distillers used a technological vacuum distillation process. Distillation under vacuum creates lower temperatures, enhancing both flavor and aromatics.

The Romulan Ale Rye then aged more than two years just across the Ohio River from Kentucky.

The distiller’s notes show that the rye graininess is apparent in the nose and initial taste on the tongue, followed by a sweet note of vanilla creaminess and sweetness. It has the spicy, peppery rye finish with muted notes of dried fig, raisin and cherry.

The Star Trek Spirits Romulan Ale Rye has a suggested retail price of $85 and is available now at www.startrekspirits.com .

From the team behind Star Trek Wines comes a new way to celebrate your fandom, Star Trek Spirits. And they are going to kick things off with Romulan Ale in custom bottles to match the iconic drink first featured in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan .

The spirits of Star Trek

The mission of Star Trek Spirits is to create a new line of ultra-premium spirits worthy of the Star Trek Universe. They plan to reimagine old classics from the franchise and produce a line of spirits “focusing on authenticity, premium quality, and bespoke glass vessels.”

From its first appearance in Star Trek II , Romulan Ale has become legendary as a highly potent beverage of Romulan origin with its characteristic crystal blue color. It also had an aura of mystique due to being declared illegal by the Federation; however, Romulan Ale remained popular and has popped up through the franchise.

Star Trek Spirits’ first offering will continue the tradition with limited edition releases of Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey and Romulan Ale Vodka, each in individually numbered bottles. According to Star Trek Spirits, “From concept to cork, bringing this classic part of Star Trek history alive has been an amazing journey.” And if you are looking for something to do while you enjoy your Romulan Ale, you can entertain yourself with Nevada legal online casinos to experience recommended casino apps.

Here is how the new Romulan Ales are described by Star Trek Spirits…

ROMULAN ALE VODKA

Vodka Notes: Distilled from premium Midwest grain, Romulan Ale Vodka is produced in the Napa Area, distilled four times in a stainless steel still, to 192 proof to ensure a clean distillation of only the heart of the vodka then cut to 80 proofs for bottling. Put together by a family of 13th generation distillers, there are no trace of off notes or the smell of rubbing alcohol that many vodkas suffer from. Unlike several other vodkas this one is not highly filtered so you have a great body and mouthfeel that would otherwise be lost.

‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Funko Pops Announced; Moopsy Added To Mobile Game

I saw the Romulan Ale Vodka at STLV, I spoke to them at their booth about it, what a great idea! However, he said nothing about Rye Whiskey but now that they offer it. Thats all it took for me and I ordered both. I love Bourbon anyway and always have and Rye makes a great Old Fashioned drink. I really hope that this is going to be a new trend or line for them. There are always… possibilities.

Saurian brandy and Aldebaran whiskey clearly must come next.

And the Alderbaran whisky MUST be green.

I’ve asked this before, and don’t recall if there were responses – has anyone actually tried any of the previously marketed spirits, and if so, how are they?

The Chateau Picard was pretty good, as was the Kanar. The Ten Forward vodka was definitely… vodka. I’m told the Blood Wine was decent as well, I gifted that to a few people. The blue Zinfandel tasted like cheap wine with blue in it, so I’d be wary of that. I’m no expert though.

The Romulan ale to me will probably be much like the Kanar was – a lovely bottle to keep that also got me drunk while watching Star Trek. The actual quality of the alcohol is kinda second nature to that.

My wife and I have tried all the wines starting with their first offering. That is except for the recent Risian varieties and the Picard wines that were shown in S2 of PICARD & SNW S1 they showed at STLV but I hope to taste these once they ship. All the wines so far are quite good, go with any meal. Great (drinkable) props when you throw a Trek party. I have tried the 10 FORWARD vodka that sold a couple of years ago, not bad, had a somewhat smooth finish when taken straight (chilled it is very smooth) but I never use it mixed drinks as any vodka will do. The James T. Kirk bourbon was fantastic! Very smooth at 94 proof, tastes much like Makers Mark. I have some left in the bottle for rare/special occasions only as they don’t sell it any longer, absolutely worth the price. I missed out on the Special Reserve JTK bourbon but that’s how it goes sometimes. I never bought or tried the Scotch that was produced to honor Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. I am not much of a Scotch drinker anyway but I would love to have had a bottle for the collection.

This, would be the kind of Christmas gift that would keep on giving.

I thought this was illegal?

We’re not in the Federation, are we?

I seem to remember Romulan ale first appearing in TOS, Dickel “powder horn” whiskey bottles were used on set.

You’re thinking of Saurian Brandy https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Saurian_brandy

It’s unfortunate that it’s only selling in the US. I’m in nz and I’d very much wish to try this 🖖🏽🥺💛

I may try the whisky. Judging by the fact that it’s a 95/5 mash bill, and vacuum distilled, that almost certainly points to it being distilled by MGP in Indiana, and sold to these guys. MGP supplies many dozens/hundreds of “distillers” in the US, who then sell it under their own name. Nothing wrong with that if you’re up front about it, MGP makes a good product, but so many of these places try to hide the fact and make it seem like they distill it themselves, rather than just buying already aged barrels and bottling it.

Why can’t it be shipped to Australia there are trek fans all round this world not just America

Are the Federation jiggers also for sale!?!!?!??!

Surprise surprise, US only.

Romulan ale

  • View history

Romulan ale, 2375

Romulan ale was a highly intoxicating alcoholic beverage of Romulan origin with a characteristic blue color (ranging from a pale sky blue to a dark midnight blue). It took a while to ferment , and Doctor Leonard McCoy joked that he used it for "medicinal purposes." ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan )

In 2263 of the alternate reality , Montgomery Scott ordered three Romulan ales for himself at James T. Kirk 's birthday party on Starbase Yorktown . ( Star Trek Beyond ) In the prime reality , Romulan ale was illegal in the Federation from at least the early 2280s to the late 2370s , but many Starfleet officers had actually sampled it at one point or another. A rare exception was Admiral William Ross . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ; Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country ; Star Trek Nemesis ; DS9 : " Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges ")

Admiral James T. Kirk was given a bottle of Romulan ale dated 2283 as a birthday present from Doctor Leonard McCoy in 2285 . ( Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ) Captain James T. Kirk was able to procure some for his crew and served it at a state dinner with Klingon High Chancellor Gorkon in 2293 . When Brigadier Kerla said he thought it was illegal, Kirk wryly noted it was " one of the advantages of being a thousand light years from Federation headquarters . " However, the ensuing hangover convinced him to order the galley to no longer have the beverage served at diplomatic functions . ( Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country )

In 2362 , Fallit Kot hijacked a shipment of Romulan ale. He was sentenced to eight years in a Romulan labor camp . ( DS9 : " Melora ") In 2366 , the replicators aboard the USS Enterprise -D could not replicate Romulan ale; it would have required programming the devices with the molecular structure of the beverage. The recipe was not readily available, due to the lack of information and communication between the Federation and the Romulan Empire . ( TNG : " The Defector ") The Zibalian trader Kivas Fajo had twelve cases of vintage Pratorean Romulan ale before the Federation confiscated them in 2366. These cases were mentioned in a listing of Fajo's collections in his Federation biographical data file. ( TNG : " The Most Toys ", okudagram )

Romulan ale was a challenge even for species as stout as the Klingons , whose native alcohols tended to be strong, and were usually quite resistant to the effects of alcohol. After drinking a sizable amount of Romulan ale in celebration of William T. Riker and Deanna Troi 's wedding in 2379 , Worf , obviously suffering its effects, stated, " Romulan ale should be illegal, " to which Geordi La Forge replied, " It is. " Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Shinzon later also shared a glass of the drink in a side room of the Romulan Senate chambers. ( Star Trek Nemesis ).

Julian Bashir ordered a glass of Romulan ale in Quark's in 2375 . ( DS9 : " Covenant ")

This was possible as Romulan ale had been legal in 2375 during the Dominion War , when the embargo was lifted as part of the alliance between the Federation and the Romulans. It was served aboard the USS Bellerophon on its way to Romulus and on the planet itself during a reception. Senator Cretak , Admiral Ross, and Doctor Bashir shared a glass of the drink in the mess hall of the USS Bellerophon . ( DS9 : " Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges ")

In 2381 , the USS Cerritos delivered a shipment of Romulan ale and other beverages to Deep Space 9 as a goodwill gift for the Karemma . ( LD : " Hear All, Trust Nothing ")

Also that year, Katrot bought a baseball cap from " some gal " on Angel I that read, " It's Romulan ale o'clock somewhere. " ( LD : " Empathological Fallacies ")

In 2399 , Soji Asha and Narek shared a bottle of Romulan ale at the Romulan Reclamation Site . ( PIC : " Absolute Candor ")

In 2401 , the SS Eleos XII transported a case of Romulan ale to Sarnia Prime along with medical supplies . When questioned about it during an inspection by the Fenris Rangers , Jack Crusher claimed that it was an "ideal antiseptic " used for sterilization . He offered to share it with the Rangers, but denied that it was a bribe . ( PIC : " Disengage ")

Background information [ ]

Kali-fal

Kali-fal , the real name of Romulan ale?

Romulan ale, 2268

A blue Romulan beverage

Blue food

What goes better with blue sperm whale than Romulan ale?

The identification of the blue drink Picard and Shinzon share is from the script of the film. It is also revealed there that Romulan ale was served at Riker's bachelor party and that Worf is still hung-over from the ale he drank at that party.

Romulan ale has always appeared some tint of blue. Blue beverages were also seen in Romulan contexts in TOS : " The Enterprise Incident " and DS9 : " In the Pale Moonlight ". In the latter episode, the blue beverage is identified as kali-fal , which may be the Romulan name for "Romulan ale": they both appear to be bluish liquids that pack a wallop, though Romulan whiskey is another highly intoxicating Romulan alcoholic beverage that is bluish. However, kali-fal is known to have a potent aroma, whereas Romulan ale was never mentioned to have such an aroma.

Enterprise officers also enjoyed blue colored drinks in TOS: " Space Seed " and " Is There in Truth No Beauty? ". However, the blue drink in the latter was explicitly identified as Antarean brandy on-screen.

In the script for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , the stage directions stated that, when Kirk and McCoy drink Romulan ale, it is an "instant drunk."

According to Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special , the contents for the food props during the dinner scene aboard the USS Enterprise -A in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country were: plastic sperm whale, hardboiled "Klingon" egg, unspecified flower species, chicken a-la-king, and blue Kool-Aid for the Romulan Ale.

Per the Star Trek Cookbook , the Romulan ale shown on the shows was actually Glacier Freeze Gatorade mixed with seltzer.

In the first draft script for " Caretaker ", Tom Paris ordered a tall glass of Romulan ale in Quark's , aboard space station Deep Space 9 .

The Las Vegas Star Trek Experience sold bottles and six-packs of "Romulan ale", a blue lager-style beer made by Central American brewery Cerveceria La Constancia on exclusive license from Paramount Pictures . The Klingon actors were scripted to claim that " you Humans cannot hold your neurotoxins! "

In real life, the book 488 Bacardi Rum Based Cocktails included a recipe for "Real Romulan Ale", a mixture of Bacardi rum, Everclear alcohol, and Blue Curaçao liqueur. [1]

In 2009 , an energy drink called Romulan Ale Energy Drink was manufactured by Boston America and released to tie into the film Star Trek .

In Star Trek Beyond , after Montgomery Scott is heard in the background ordering three Romulan ales for himself, he is shown drinking a brownish liquid. The Romulan ale bottle seen in Star Trek Nemesis was sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [2]

Apocrypha [ ]

Diane Duane 's The Romulan Way states that Romulan ale is brewed from grains such as kheh , and states that the primary reason it is difficult to imbibe is that it is harsh to the throat. Terise Haleakala-LoBrutto, one of the protagonists, comments that the Romulans drink it in part to prove that they can . The book also has a form of wine that is easier on the throat but more alcoholic.

The Romulan tutorial missions in Star Trek Online indicate that the ale produced on Virinat, a Romulan colony, is brewed from honey-like secretions of khellid insects.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

One tiny detail in the first few moments of Star Trek: Lower Decks had fans buzzing when the show’s opening two minutes were aired during San Diego Comic-Con@Home.

Romulan Whiskey? What’s that?

Kirk inspects McCoy's bottle of Romulan Ale in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan

Well, contrary to popular belief, Romulans have more than one available beverage option when it comes to their alcohol. In addition to Romulan Ale, the Federation rivals do, yes, also derive drinks from grain! They even have different varieties, as we humans do on here Earth.

In Lower Decks ’ premiere, “ Second Contact ,” Ensign Beckett Mariner is drinking ‘MelShat,’ a Romulan spirit distilled from a dried, aged Romulan grain known as 'GenMat,' which can, yes, be referred to as Romulan Whiskey.

Star Trek Romulan Language

Romulans translate Terran (Earth) whiskey as ‘WesKih,’ and distinguish between the two, noting that this drink is specifically distilled from a malted grain such as barley or rye.

Like with many fictional languages, the route to Romulan Whiskey wasn’t simply a case of smooshing syllables together until they sounded pleasing. On the contrary, when the need for Beckett’s joke arose, Lower Decks ’ production reached out to Trent Pehrson, the linguist who shaped the Romulan language heard on Star Trek: Picard .

With Pehrson’s help, the translation for whiskey was shaped so that it fit within Romulus’ linguistic structure. The translation for the grain, ‘MelShat,’ was also crafted by Pehrson, specifically for Lower Decks ’ canonical use.

So no, long-time Trek fans, you didn’t mishear! Romulan Whiskey has officially become part of the Star Trek canon.

Star Trek's Romulan Ale Embargo Is One of Its Best Gags - But Why Is It Illegal?

Romulan ale is as much a part of Star Trek as the transporters. Its backstory has also become one of the series' longest-running jokes.

"Romulan ale? Why Bones, you know this is illegal," Kirk scolds his longtime doctor in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . McCoy just gave him a bottle full of an intriguing blue liquid as a birthday present. It was the first time the drink had been overtly mentioned in Star Trek , but far from the last. The saga has made no less than 13 references to the ubiquitous beverage, including several in the most recent batch of streaming shows on Paramount+ . It’s even shown up in real life, notably as a drink at the defunct Star Trek Experience attraction in Las Vegas, as well as an energy drink released to promote the 2009 movie reboot.

That’s a lot of mileage for what began as a little flavor to open a single movie . But Romulan ale has evolved to become as much part of the Star Trek universe as the phasers and transporters. Indeed, it could be viewed as one of the series’ longest-running jokes, and it shows no sign of slowing down.

RELATED:  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Confirms a Major Wrath of Khan Connection

The specifics about Romulan ale, at least canonically, are surprisingly limited. It’s marked by a distinctive blue color and a colossal kick. The script for The Wrath of Khan described the stage direction for Kirk and McCoy as "instant drunk," while Star Trek Nemesis depicted Worf suffering from the drink's impact during Tori and Riker’s wedding despite his formidable Klingon constitution. A few "outlier" beverages exist – including Romulan whiskey, mentioned in Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 1, Episode 1, "Second Contact," and kali-fal , mentioned in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 6, Episode 19, "In the Pale Moonlight" – which may be associated drinks, or simply other names for the same one.

Though The Wrath of Khan constituted the beverage’s first official appearance, sharp-eyed fans have spotted unnamed blue drinks in a pair of original series episodes – Season 1, Episode 22, "Space Seed" and Season 3, Episode 2, "The Enterprise Incident" – which could be construed as Romulan ale. Subsequent appearances invariably emphasized its illegal nature. Kirk used it during the first meeting with the Klingons in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country while touting the benefits of being "a thousand light-years from Federation headquarters." More recently, Lower Decks Season 1, Episode 10, "No Small Parts" used a joke in which Beckett Mariner inadvertently revealed Riker’s Romulan ale stash to Troi.

RELATED:  Picard Season 2 Is Going Back to a Key Moment in Star Trek History

The joke is that no one has ever specifically spelled out why it’s illegal. Beyond its potency, which seems unusual but also non-debilitating, the ban on it appears to be political in nature. From the beginning, the Romulans were depicted as the mortal enemies of the Federation – making them easy stand-ins for Cold War political adversaries such as the USSR and the People’s Republic of China – complete with a Neutral Zone to divide their space from the UFP’s. The embargo would thus be a way of preventing the Empire from profiting off of what was a noted export, echoing similar real-world bans on Cuban cigars and the like. Deep Space Nine suggested that the drink became legal once the Romulans entered the war against the Dominion – notably in Season 7, Episode 16, "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" – which would confirm the ban as solely political.

Its use in The Wrath of Khan goes a little deeper than that and helps inform its subsequent appearances. McCoy gives Kirk the ale after the Admiral has spent years sitting behind a desk and away from space. It’s a sign of the daring life he used to lead that he can’t have anymore: a little bit of the forbidden out where he can’t get into trouble for it. It’s no mistake that McCoy’s other gift is a pair of reading glasses, reminding him of who he’s becoming as well as who he once was.

Most of all, the drink is simply an easy way to invoke the Star Trek universe, without a lot of special effects and touching on alien cultures and norms as well as the galaxy’s political conflicts. The Star Trek Cookbook states that it can be made using blue Gatorade and seltzer water, and yet its alien color and quirky title instantly bring the world to life. The question remains whether it will ever become legal for an extended period, but it probably shouldn’t. What fun would it be then?

Star Trek Spirits Romulan Ale Vodka

From its first appearance in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Romulan Ale has become legendary throughout the galaxy.

Distilled from premium Midwest grain, the vodka is produced in the Napa Area, distilled four times in a stainless steel still, to 192 proof to ensure a clean distillation of only the heart of the vodka then cut to 80 proof for bottling. Put together by a family of thirteen generation distillers, there are no trace of off notes or the smell of rubbing alcohol that many vodkas suffer from. A carefully done distillation. Touch of corn sweetness with the higher notes from a plump smell of good wheat grain. The Romulan Ale Blue Vodka has a fantastic electric blue appearance, with no sediment whatsoever. On swirling, it leaves a phenomenal blue coat on the inside of the glass with long thin legs. Wonderful bright appearance. Unlike several other vodkas this one is not highly filtered so you have a great body and mouthfeel that would otherwise be lost.

From concept to cork, bringing this classic part of Star Trek history alive has been an amazing journey. We hope you enjoy the end results as much as we enjoyed putting it all together. Live Long and Prosper.

Who Is Doctor Vellek? TNG Romulan In Star Trek: Discovery Explained

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 1 - "Red Directive"

  • Dr. Vellek's discovery of Progenitors' technology kicks off a galactic treasure hunt in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.
  • The Romulan scientist kept the location secure with a paper diary hidden in a puzzle box on his 24th-century ship.
  • The Progenitors' technology holds the power to create and destroy, potentially changing the galaxy forever.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive", the USS Discovery's mission takes Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) to an 800-year-old Romulan starship containing the belongings and the remains of a long-dead Romulan scientist named Doctor Vellek (Michael Copeman). Vellek has been entombed in his ship since the 24th century, when Star Trek: The Next Generation takes place. Dr. Vellek's notes contain key information on the galaxy's greatest treasure: a mysterious, ancient, and very powerful artifact that the United Federation of Planets' mysterious Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) prioritizes recovering before it falls into the hands of the villainous Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis).

In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 20, "The Chase", Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) follows in the footsteps of his recently-deceased archeology mentor, Professor Galen (Norman Lloyd), by picking up a trail that Galen had long been pursuing. Picard forms a tenuous alliance with Klingons and Cardassians pursuing the same mysterious goal , discovering clues that lead to the uninhabited planet Vilmor II. Upon arrival, however, Picard, Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), along with Klingon and Cardassian representatives, beam down to find a crew of Romulans that have beaten them there. Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere reveals more about one of those Romulans, Dr. Vellek.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Who was doctor vellek in star trek: tng’s “the chase”, star trek: discovery reveals the romulan doctor vellek's tng connection..

Doctor Vellek is a Romulan scientist with the crew that has already arrived at Vilmor II in Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Chase" , establishing how Discovery season 5 connects to TNG . Instead of joining in the collaborative effort with the Federation as the Klingons and Cardassians did, the Romulans simply monitored communications as the USS Enterprise traveled from site to site, unveiling clues at each destination that led to the next. Everyone present is equally privy to the information revealed by a hologram of an Ancient Humanoid (Salome Jens) that their race seeded life throughout the galaxy, so all humanoid species share a common ancestor, which Star Trek: Discovery has dubbed the Progenitors.

Dr. Kovich already knows what's been "classified for centuries" when telling Captain Burnham about Vellek's own discovery of the Progenitors' technology.

The Klingons and Cardassians drop the spirit of cooperation that led them to this point, balking at the idea that they're related in any way. But the Romulans, who essentially copied the Federation's homework to arrive at Vilmor II, contact Captain Picard with hope of an alliance between the Romulans and the Federation. This implies Vellek had been in contact with the Federation while leading the search for the Progenitors' technology in the 24th century , because in Discovery 's 32nd century , Dr. Kovich already knows what's been "classified for centuries" when telling Captain Burnham about Vellek's own discovery of the Progenitors' technology.

Why The Progenitors Technology Is Star Trek: Discovery’s Greatest Treasure

"a few thousand years ago, we'd have called them gods.".

The Progenitors' technology is Star Trek: Discovery 's greatest treasure because it holds the answers to scientific and philosophical questions about the nature of life as we know it, and also has the power to create life essentially from scratch. The site of Progenitor technology could explain the ancient humanoids' motives beyond what was revealed in Star Trek: The Next Generation , fundamentally altering societies at their very core. With that kind of information and the power of creation, the user of Progenitor technology could become the most powerful force in the galaxy , especially if the power to create also holds within it the power to destroy.

The Romulan in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1 , "Red Directive", Dr. Vellek, understood the importance of keeping information about the Progenitors and their technology as secure as possible. Vellek attempted to keep the location of Progenitor technology out of the wrong hands by keeping a paper diary, which can't be hacked, and hiding that book within a Romulan puzzle box, itself within a cloaked vault aboard his 24th-century Romulan ship. Even then, Dr. Vellek's diary isn't the treasure itself, but a clue that kicks off Star Trek: Discovery 's galactic treasure hunt, destined to change the galaxy irrevocably.
