CLARITY: PHOENIX SESSIONS 2-LP ANNOUNCED

The limited edition two-LP (Exotic Location Recordings) set was recorded live at the Icehouse art studio and warehouse in 2021 will now be available for the first time on vinyl. The two- LPs are pressed on translucent sun-kissed colored vinyl and the gatefold package includes never before seen photos by Steve Thrasher and personal notes from each band member.

This Phoenix Session of Clarity is our best attempt to play the album faithfully as who we are today. I would like to think we’ve learned a thing or two over since 1999. We’re grateful for the opportunity to document where the songs are now. And, thanks for coming along with us for the ride.

How we play songs evolves over time. One person adds an embellishment and then the next night someone else picks up on it and adds their thing with it. It becomes more or less cannon. The music from Clarity has had a couple decades of drifting around. Never getting into something we would describe as experimental. But definitely less representative of what we recorded back in 1998-ish. We were pretty sure we’d never have the resources to record “for real” again, so we threw everything we could think of into the recording of those songs.

Happy 25th Anniversary to Clarity!

Jimmy Eat World is an American rock band founded in Mesa, Arizona in 1993. Though they started off as punk rock/punk pop the band has evolved toward alternative rock and indie rock.

Childhood friends Jim Adkins and Zach Lind partnered with guitarist Tom Linton and bassist Mitch Porter to form the band in 1993. Under local label Wooden Blue Records Jimmy Eat World released a few singles, an EP and a self-titled album during 1993-94. The band got lucky in 1995 with a contract under Capitol Records that allowed them to release the album “Static Prevails.” For this venture, friend Rick Burch replaced Mitch Porter and drummer Mark Trombino joined the group.

In 1999, Jimmy Eat World released “Clarity” which was recorded in studios in California. The single “Lucky Denver Mint” was featured on the soundtrack of rom-com “Never Been Kissed” which elevated the band to mainstream audiences. However, the album that prompted Jimmy Eat World to worldwide fame is “Bleed American” which was put out in 2001 by DreamWorks. The single “The Middle” exploded on the airwaves and took the #5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Following tremendous success with “Bleed American” Jimmy Eat World recruited producer Gil Norton (whose previous experience includes working with bands like the Pixies and Foo Fighters) to work on “Futures.” Their fourth album came out October 2004 and the single “Pain” became a hit. By this time Jimmy Eat World had toured independently to promote “Bleed American” and also in collaboration with Taking Back Sunday. In 2005 they joined forces with Green Day on a worldwide tour.

In total Jimmy Eat World has released eight studio albums both independently and under major label Interscope Records (formerly DreamWorks). The band’s name comes from a cartoon drawn by Linton’s younger brother Ed, who was making fun of their brother Jim. The drawing depicts a slab of the Earth resting on Jim’s jaw, and the rest is history. Jimmy Eat World considers punk bands Mr. T Experience, Radon and Tempe’s Horace Pinker as influences in their music.

Live reviews

Emo stalwarts Jimmy Eat World have been truckin' since the early/mid-90s, careening through venues across the world and honing their live show into a precise, well-oiled machine. Make no mistake though, they're not corporatised puppets – Jimmy Eat World retain the raw streak that made them so appealing at the outset of their career. Don't worry, they'll still make you bawl like a toddler who's dropped their ice cream with their tender balladry and grazed-knee emotion. Big numbers such as “Pain”, “A Praise Chorus”, “Sweetness” and “The Middle” are still stellar anthems from the Arizona natives in live settings, and though they've been going over twenty years, the voltage runs hot through the veins of Jim Adkins, Rick Burch, Zach Lind and Tom Linton when they coo, strum, pick and thwack. The energy and emotion courses through them as if each track was being played for the first time. Damaged and Invented may not have charted as well as their early records, but there's not one inkling that Jimmy Eat World are waning in quality. Head back in time, relive those emo years, or discover them for the first time – either way, there's so much to love about these living legends.

Jimmy Eat World, or JEW, put on an amazing live show. This was my first time seeing them. This was during their "Futures" tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of the album "Futures" which is probably my favorite album by them. They played the entire album, front to back, pausing only to say Hi to the audience and introduce the next song. Sometimes just jumping into the next one. The crowd was packed in tight, but everyone was super friendly and into it. Afterward they played the two encores playing some deep cuts and fan favorites including the Stay On My Side Tonight EP in full (except for the remix of Drugs or Me - which did play after the set was over). Minibosses opened for them and they did a great job warming the crowd up with their mass up of videogame covers and pop hits. They have so much fun on stage that it is infectious and even the grittiest of patrons was bopping their head by the end.

I don't normally do reviews of shows or artists but this band is worth it. I've seen Jimmy 4 times in total and this was the best vibe I've had from seeing them. It's because it was their standalone gig and not at a festival (where I've normally seen them) so you really get to take in the dynamic that the band create on stage with their music as well as their presence. This is one of the best and most talented bands in the industry and they always have been. I will always remember whenever I see this band, and I've got some memories I won't forget.

Jimmy Eat World was awesome as usual. They are maybe the purest sounding band of their era. Their vocals are amazing, and the instruments sound great as well. The only issues I had last night were with the venue. They are not set up for a crowd of that size. The speakers were only on the stage, so from where I was on the lawn the sound didn’t carry out real well. Also, if Levitt Pavilion is planning on having big shows like that again they might want to increase their bathroom facilities. In summary, the band was great, but the venue not so much.

The Palace (formerly Flames Central) is my favorite venue to catch a show. It's very intimate and personal. You are RIGHT THERE with the artist.

As expected Jimmy Eat World blew the lid off the joint. I never thought I'd say it, but there were so many crowd surfers at this show! Jimmy Eat world really got the crwod going crazy, played nearly every song you'd ever want to hear. They seemed to be having a great time.

I know I did. This is my 4th Jimmy show and I can't wait to go again given the shot. Thanks for a fantastic time!!

The vibe was bad. New songs are not working. The only few good minutes were when they've played old songs. Bad concert overall. The show was amazing. Jimmy Eat World is one of the most professional bands i've ever seen. From their stage set, to their look, to their performance... consummate professionals who take their musicianship seriously, but also have a loads of fun whilst performing. This was my first chance to get to see them in the 20 years i've been listening to them and they did not disappoint!

This was a great show it was definitely worth the money they played all there best songs even some new ones and the sound was great the only problem I have is that there was no water or pop there only liquor but besides that it was one of the best concerts I've been to

This is my first time seeing these guys live and they really put on a great show. Lots of energy for a group that's been around for awhile. Nice small venue that wasn't packed, also made this night enjoyable. Would see them again if they play within 2 hours of me.

Peacorn99’s profile image

It was just amazing! I loved the club, the atmosphere and everything. They are one of the few alive people i actually like and unlike other bands they aren't arrogant, so they pulled a very nice show, I would even say the best one I have seen so far!

Futures , their follow-up to BA , featured “Pain,” which also hit No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart. In October 2019, the band released their tenth album, the critically acclaimed Surviving , which became one of three “chapters” of their 2021 globally streamed series Phoenix Sessions that also included Futures (Chapter V) and Clarity (Chapter III ), performed in their entirety (available on YouTube here ). Recently, they’ve released two independent singles, “Something Loud” and “Place Your Debts,” with the former charting 21 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay.

Jimmy Eat World is not the only act taking the stage on their tour. At every gig, they will be joined by fellow rockers Manchester Orchestra.

Manchester Orchestra is an indie rock band that hails from Atlanta, Georgia. About Jimmy Eat World

Jimmy Eat World first started playing together in 1993. Their name is based on a painting by Tom Linton’s younger brother, Ed. Young Ed drew a picture of his brother Jim with a globe in his mouth with the caption “Jimmy eat world” to insult him—the rest is history.

The Mesa, AZ natives rose to fame with their hit song, “The Middle,” from their fourth album, Bleed American . The song ranked in the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 all-genre chart in 2001 and led the emo pioneers to make several MTV appearances over the years.

Their most recent album, “Surviving,” was released in 2019. It features 10 tracks, including “Congratulations,” “Love Never,” “Criminal Energy” and title track “Surviving.”

It’s an exciting development for fans of Jimmy Eat World, who have grown accustom to watching the band perform via livestream. In 2021, the band presented a global stream series Phoenix Sessions , which began with a top to bottom performance of their 2019 album Surviving (Chapter X) .

The Phoenix Sessions was a one-of-a-kind set of performances that explored the band’s decades-long career. Formatted into chapters, the series included the band’s most recent album, their critically acclaimed 1999 album Clarity (Chapter III), and their 2004 fifth studio album Futures (Chapter V).

The launch performance of Surviving marked the first time listeners heard the album live, apart from those lucky fans who were in attendance at the band’s live shows in October 2019.

This Phoenix Session of Clarity is our best attempt to play the album faithfully as who we are today. I would like to think we've learned a thing or two over since 1999. We're grateful for the opportunity to document where the songs are now. And, thanks for coming along with us for the ride. How we play songs evolves over time.
