When it comes to travel, we know you need to find the perfect balance between comfort and style. After all, it’s great to look put together while hopping on a flight, but not at the cost of your comfort—especially on long-haul trips. Rest assured, we've curated a list of wardrobe essentials to achieve flawless travel and airport outfits, whether you are exploring a new destination for business or pleasure.

When it comes to the best travel outfits for women, accessories play a critical role in keeping you comfy and organized. All you have to do is remember a comfortable pair of shoes , compression socks to keep things moving, an eye mask that's an upgrade from the one the airline provides, and a chic shawl that doubles as a blanket. And of course, no travel outfit would be complete without a fashionable (and functional!) carry-on bag on your arm or atop your luggage . This bag should house all of your essentials and still level up your airport outfit. Keep reading for some of the best travel and airport outfit ideas your next trip.

Spanx AirEssentials Wide-Leg Pants

AirEssentials Wide-Leg Pants

Sometimes nothing less than sweats will do, and here is where Spanx really excels. Oprah picked these for her 2022 Favorite Things , saying, “You might know Spanx for its shapewear, but it also does fantastic cozy clothes. When I tell you this set feels light as air, I’m not kidding. It’s my new leisure suit. The perfectly loose-and-lightweight fabric is like buttah!”

Missky Long-Sleeved Oversize Pant Set

Long-Sleeved Oversize Pant Set

You might look like you're already on vacation if you show up to the airport in this neutral pants and button-down set. Available in two bright and two neutral colors, and sizes small to 2XL.

Vuori Elevation Trouser in Midnight Heather

Elevation Trouser in Midnight Heather

Vuori is celebrated for its super-cozy pieces. The best thing about these pants? They look put together while the stretch-knit fabric is as comfy as your favorite Vuori loungers. The high-rise waist and loose fit of the leg give you an effortlessly stylish silhouette.

Girlfriend Collective Compressive Pocket Legging

Compressive Pocket Legging

Leggings are a perfect choice for traveling wear. And these have Oprah's seal of approval, as they were picked for Oprah's 2022 Favorite Things list. Eco-friendly and size-inclusive (the range goes through 6XL), these compression leggings are available in a plethora of hues. Plus, they feature double-side seaming and pockets.

J. Crew Cashmere-Wool Travel Wrap

Cashmere-Wool Travel Wrap

Let's be honest, you can't always count on the airline's blankets to keep you warm, and some even leave annoying fluff behind. Stay warm and stylish with your own wearable blanket by way of this travel necessity from J. Crew that comes in eight different colors.

Dr. Scholl's Time Off Platform Sneakers

Time Off Platform Sneakers

Celebrated for their consciously comfortable footwear, these sneakers from Dr. Scholl's are tricked out with tons of features for all-day comfort. Inside, anatomical cushioning and arch support keep you covered while a lightweight, anti-slip platform sole protects on the outside. This minimalist sneaker looks just as good with a matching suit as it does a low-key sweat set.

Athleta Everlasting Button-Down Top

Everlasting Button-Down Top

A classic button-down is a travel essential that elevates any in-transit look. Athleta's Everlasting button-down has all the details you need: a lightweight, odor-control stretch fabric and longer length for coverage. Luckily, you can cover all your neutral bases with navy, black, and white. Plus, it comes in an extended range of sizes from XXS to 3X.

Chico's Travelers No Tummy Pants

Spanx Women's AirEssentials 1/2 Zip Sweater

Women's AirEssentials 1/2 Zip Sweater

Sometimes nothing less than sweats will do, and here is where Spanx really excels. Oprah picked this top for her 2023 Favorite Things , saying, “Wow. Wow. Wow. May I tell you I got this set last year? I wore it in a photo shoot for O Quarterly and never looked back...” Why not pair it with the coordinating wide-leg pants for a full sweatsuit?

Compression Socks with Enhanced Cushioning (3 Pack)

Compression socks are always a good ideal for traveling. We recommend these styles from Dr. Motion that offer graduated compression of 8 to 15 mmHg while providing arch support. Unlike other socks that can feel scratchy or clammy, these are soft, moisture-wicking, and subtly cushioned.

Lightweight Recycled Poly-Fill Shirt Jacket

Sometimes a full on coat is not needed for travel, but you can never be quite sure of the weather. That's why a a little packable shacket—part shirt, part jacket—comes in. In black, olive green, or dark blue, the jacket will be your go-to for travel. Keep in mind, it runs slightly big in order to allow for comfortable layering of hoodies or sweaters underneath. There's a reason why Oprah tapped it on her Favorite Things list .

Travel in Style: The Best, Stylish, & Most Comfortable Flying Outfits to Wear on A Plane

I get asked about the best outfits to wear on planes and long haul flights a ton . When you travel as much as I do, comfortable (and * chic *) flying clothes are everything. So I’ve rounded up the best travel outfits and all of my go-to flying outfits to help you can stay comfy on the plane and arrive to your next destination in style.

These travel outfits are guaranteed to keep you chic, comfortable, and stylish — whether you’re flying with your girls to a bachelorette party in Cabo , heading off to a business trip in San Francisco , flying to your honeymoon in the Maldives , or looking for a comfortable, cute travel outfit for a 24 hour flight to Bali.

What to wear on a long flight or redeye:

I have been traveling a ton lately in this outfit – I wear an S and it is the COMFIEST thing for a flight. The material is sooo soft and high quality. Highly recommend.

The Range Cropped Henley Tank in White

I’ve been living in this super high-quality basic tank , pair it with some matching sweats and a cute jacket and you’re good to go! So airport chic!

alo Muse Jogger in Ivory

This f lying sweat set is everything, and so comfy. If you’re going for a plane-to-beach look, this is it.

On Cloudnova Sneaker in Undyed White

Or keep it super-comfy and cute with my all-time favorite flying sweatshirt:

Selkie The Pillow Sweater in Creme

I’m absolutely obsessed with a trusty denim jacket for any travel / flying outfit , and I haven’t found a better fit than this one. It’s so COMFY, but chic at the same time. I love it. Plus it makes a great blackout shade/blanket on a flight.

My other go-to long flight outfit is leggings – I love Alosoft leggings (seriously, if you haven’t tried Alo’s SUPER soft leggings , you’re missing out. They are a long flight essential !! ),  a casual tee, and a light sweatshirt or sweater for when it gets cold on the airplane.

Also recently have gotten very obsessed with these leggings too!! SO soft.

style in travel

These white sneakers are ALWAYS my go to travel shoe. They’re so unbelievably comfy they feel like you’re walking on clouds, yet they’re sturdy enough to work out in in the resort gym when you get to your destination. I love them for travel days, long flights, and on vacation!

I also love these sneakers if you’re looking for a little bit more athletic of a shoe – these are my go to workout shoe!

I also always pack a pair of compression socks to put on on any long flight as well. Compression socks ( like these ones I wear from Amazon ) help with your circulation, reduce swelling, and help with recovery, making them a must-have for any flight.

style in travel

My flying outfit here for my first flight with a baby was simple, functional, and comfy – this nursing bra, with this bra-top over it, and these comfy sweats, sneakers, as well as a comfy hoodie for on the plane!

What to wear flying to a business trip:

Stretchy black pants, a tee and a blazer.

For a business trip, I’d do something like this with this gorgeous blazer , a white tee (I love this one ), and add in a chic black skirt and you’re good to go.

Amanda Uprichard Shawl Collar Blazer in Black

I also love this look with denim shorts or jeans for more of a girls trip or casual flying outfit.

Norma Kamali Straight Skirt in Black

What to wear on the flight to your honeymoon:

style in travel

Love these chic pants for a flight to somewhere tropical! I’m a size 26 and wear a small!

and you can always add a little honeymoon flare to your and your new hubby’s outfit with these

, what to wear flying to a mountain destination:.

Maybe you’re heading for a mountain weekend in Aspen this winter, to new years in Tahoe , or to your friend’s ranch in Wyoming. If you’re dressing for a winter flight, here are some must haves.

Janessa Leone Luca Hat in Black

Other things never to forget for a long flight!

Slip - Silk Sleepmask Pink

Always my go-to travel eye mask . Seriously how does anyone sleep on planes without a chic, ultra-soft eyemask like this one ? It’s my LIFESAVER.

A reusable water bottle. I LOVE my s’well . It is a life saver when it comes to staying hydrated and fighting jet lag .

style in travel

Speaking of staying hydrated on planes, I always pack Liquid IV (which you can get on Amazon here)  – it’s a “hydration multiplier” and you mix it in your water for ultimate hydration – and almost no calories. This stuff is like healthy gatorade, gives you so much hydration and it’s AMAZING.

style in travel

I always pack a travel sized Oribe dry shampoo to keep myself looking fresh on long travel days! This stuff is gold , yall.

Thanks to These 8 Pieces, You Will Always Travel in Style

Emma Spedding

Whether you're getting a bus, plane, train or boat, it can be difficult to look stylish when you're travelling, thanks to a lack of sleep, crumpled clothes and the many things you have to lug about with you. The key to travelling in style is to keep it simple and opt for classics that are primarily practical but will also make you look smart and put together at the same time. First things first, it pays to think carefully about your luggage and handbags  and invest in quality pieces you can rely on every time you travel.

how-to-travel-in-style-126062-1530896574314-image

As for clothing, stick to simple classics that will work in different climates and are comfortable and relaxed. Accessories are where you can add a little personality, whether that's via a pair of cat-eye sunglasses like Eva Chen's or a splash of colour. Keep scrolling to shop the eight pieces that will ensure that you always travel in style.

1. A Smart Suitcase

Away + The Carry On

This suitcase is smart in both meanings of the word—it look polished, but it also charges your phone so you don't have to scramble for a plug (meaning you'll never be without your e-ticket). We've all been there.

2. Smart Loafers

Gucci + Princetown Leather Slipper

Classic loafers can be just as comfortable as a pair of trainers, but they'll look smarter and go with anything you wear to travel in.

3. A Hold-Everything Wallet

Mulberry + Darley Small Classic Grain Leather Medium Wallet

Rather than keeping your important papers in a plastic wallet, hold it all in one place in a travel wallet. I use this Mulberry one whenever I fly.

4. A Blazer

Isabel Marant Etoile + Laney Pinstriped Linen Blazer

Throw a blazer over a T-shirt and leggings and you instantly look so much more put together and stylish—opt for a lightweight fabric, which will work when you arrive in hotter destinations, too.

5. Tote Bag

Sezane + Gaby Bag

Instead of carrying lots of small plastic bags onto the plane, take a large tote on board with you—the Sézane Gaby is what I always use for travelling, and it's big enough for a change of clothes for the plane, too.

6. A Cosy Cashmere Jumper

Autumn Cashmere + Cashmere Sweater

A cosy extra layer is an in-flight essential. Two words: air con.

7. Simple T-shirt (with a spare)

Topman + Assorted Colour Slim Fit T-Shirt 7 Pack

I always travel in a blazer and a white T-shirt—but take a spare one in my handbag so I can feel refreshed when I land.

8. Statement Sunglasses

Adam Selman x Le Specs + The Last Lolita Cat-Eye Sunglasses

A statement pair of sunglasses instantly adds extra attitude to your look when you exit baggage reclaim. ■

By Diana Eden, Contributing Writer, Travel Over 80

In my former life as a costume designer for television shows and films in Hollywood, my job was to find characters (actors) the perfect look for any situation, whether the scene called for an evening gown or a traveling ensemble. Certainly, I have dressed thousands of people in those 35 years designing for all sizes, ages, and shapes, all levels of talent and fame. But that was for the “pretend” world where a crew of costumers is standing by just off-camera to straighten, mend and adjust during filming. Now, as a retired designer, and an over-80-year-old traveler, I am asked to recommend the best clothes for traveling, and I confess, I am sometimes at a loss, as every person is so different. Who am I to say that what I like to wear will be what someone else wants to wear on the plane.

what to wear on the plane

Traveling in the past looked a lot different… and more comfortable!

That being said, I WILL say that when I’m asked what to wear on a plane, my answer is that if you can be both comfortable AND stylish, you have achieved something major. And if you also choose clothing that meets Ethical and Sustainable standards, you are also doing good for the planet.

What to wear on the plane to be comfortable and stylish

Getting to your destination often requires long periods of standing in lines or hours sitting on airplanes. In the early days of flying, people dressed up in smart little suits with hats and gloves. The pendulum swung to people so concerned with comfort that they showed up to the flight in sweats and what looked like sleepwear.

Can we find a balance?

1: For me, the answer is in loose clothing

I personally don’t like the tight compression of stretch pants or jeans. In my younger days, I said I’d never be caught dead in elastic-waisted “pull-on ” pants, but here we are! If I am to wear pants, they most certainly will be soft jersey knit pants with a fairly high rise so they don’t slide down when I’m seated. If I can find it, I like a matching jacket over a contrasting t-shirt or blouse, also made of soft fabric that doesn’t crease. All pieces must wash easily and hang dry at my destination.

I also like wearing a full-length t-shirt dress . It makes me feel completely unrestricted through my middle section, and with a shawl , a wedge sandal , and a touch of jewelry still looks pretty cool. Any figure type or size can pull this off.

What adds the dash of style to this choice is some good shoes that are comfortable for walking , but preferably not tennis or athletic shoes. (As anyone will tell you, those are a giveaway that you are a foreign tourist in almost anywhere but North America.)  Add some light jewelry; costume jewelry is just fine, or do what the Europeans do with such flair — add a scarf .

2. Search for companies specializing in travel-ready clothing that is no-wrinkle and easy fit .

Magellan’s and TravelSmith (the same company) have numerous jersey dresses, pants, and sets that are in the mid-price level and easy to fit. Here is a very basic dress.

Chicos has a line they call “ travelers “: a selection of jersey knit stretch pants (not tight, just straight), matching tank tops or sleeved tops, and jackets. Their colors are usually black or navy for basics, but also plenty of brighter colors. I have this set from them in “Astro Green,” which is indestructible! Striding through airports, I get countless head turns and compliments.

The other advantage is that Chicos has some pants in the tall size (I hate wearing “high water” pants) and have sizes suitable for the older woman.

Appleseeds has less expensive choices but good basic designs for older women and is one of the few websites that use older models to show their fashions. Soft Surroundings and Coldwater Creek are two other older-women-friendly vendors.

To be good to the planet, consider shopping from a company that offers sustainable and ethical clothing. This is an emerging field of study with people researching just how damaging the mass production of inexpensive wear-and-discard clothing is. These companies are changing the environmental impact of textile production and making sure garments are made by people earning a decent wage.

Some companies using climate-friendly textiles are:

Poetry Fashion , which has sizes up to 18. I like this dress .

Wayre sources the highest grade and quality fibers and builds fabrics using dramatically less water, energy and waste compared to cotton or synthetics  though it has a smaller inventory of styles. This dress caught my eye.

Pact us es “sustainable crops, organic farms, and chemical-free dyes to ensure our fibers are supporting Mother Earth from seed to tee.” Browse their women’s clothing here .

Kotn is b ased in Toronto, Canada and offers BCI-certified organic cotton, safe and fair labor standards, non-toxic dyes, and plastic-free packaging.

Other tips on what to wear on the plane.

The trick to being equally stylish and comfortable is to plan ahead and have an ensemble designed to go together rather than just “separates.”

It may seem obvious, but planning ahead will reduce your stress level as you get closer to travel day. I count the days I will be away, how many casual/sporty outfits I will need, and how many dressy. I plan how I can repeat pants and shorts with different tops and what dresses are the lightest weight and easiest to pack small.

Bring only neutral-colored shoes – black, white, and “nude .”They will go with everything no matter what you pack.

On a long-haul flight, do NOT wear an underwire bra or a bra that is too tight around the band. Try a sports bra or one of the many suggestions offered in a recent JourneyWoman article here.

Hats: One in five people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, so be sure to bring a hat. If your hat is not packable, wear it on the plane. My favorite straw hat from Tommy Bahamas just doesn’t pack, so I have to wear it, put it in the overhead storage, and hope it doesn’t get too crushed. For Africa, though, I am packing this SPF 50 hat from Coolibar .

Bring socks if your feet tend to get cold – mine certainly do. There is always a pair in my carry-on bag.

With your chosen travel outfit, add a cashmere-feel shawl. It will be useful for warmth around your shoulders, a blanket over your lap, or rolled up for a pillow. Mine is basic black from Amazon for a mere $12.00, and it comes in 6 colors. Find it here .

Bon Voyage!

I absolutely love my Travelers pants from Chicos. They wear like iron and are so comfortable.

Diana M Eden

Thanks for your comment! I agree that the Travelers pants are indestructible!

Bicycle trips in my younger years taught me how to pack light. Now I travel for 3 weeks with a carry on. A skirt I highly recommend is the macabi skirt, which I often wear on the plane. http://www.macabiskirt.com I have two of their slim long skirts that can be turned into pants and also a short skirt without having to go to a private place to convert. These skirts are comfortable and cool, have deep deep pockets and dry quickly. I top it with a loose and long fitting accessory and a necklace.

Thanks so much for your tip on the macabi skirt! What a great find! I am always on the lookout for new sources of comfortable things to wear when traveling.

I have been searching for ‘the perfect’ travel dress for years, and think I have found it. Taking two of Brenda Laine’s pieces to Sicily in a couple of weeks – one hemp and one bamboo. A long sleeveless tunic with pockets and a short cap sleeve one(worn with leggings in the evening). Sustainable, designed in Canada, made just up the road from me on Vancouver Island. I like plain colours over which I wear a very light linen free form cardigan style jacket by Maiwa when I need to cover up. http://Www.brendalaine.com .

Thanks so much for this excellent source! I love that they ship to the US, offer personalized service, and use sustainable fabrics. I have bookmarked their website and signed up for their emails. Thank you

Author’s additional comment: I recently saw a woman at JFK wearing a long black T-shirt dress, a cute straw hat, and sandals, just like I recommended in the article. She looked so great I just had to say hello to her! She also writes, but for the fashion media.

Travel in Style: Fashionable Outfits for Planes, Trains, or Automobiles

By Emily Holt

As the world seems to become even smaller and while we traverse it ever more frequently, the question of what to wear on said journeys—be it by plane, train, or automobile—still vexes.

On the one hand, you want pieces that are comfortable (even in first class you can get stuck on the tarmac) and practical (only the most skilled can race through Gare du Nord train station in Givenchy’s gold-band pumps without incident). And yet, looking at photos of someone like Veruschka from the 1970s, heading to baggage claim in a tailored coat, floppy hat, and judiciously heeled loafers, one can’t help but feel wistful for a time when the ideas of elegance and travel didn’t seem oceans apart.

With this—and the impending holiday vacation season—in mind, Vogue culled stylish and realistic looks to wear en route. Bon voyage.

How to Travel Fashionably and Comfortably on a Long Flight

Since airplane temperature is so erratic, it is important to dress in easily removable layers. We love this soft and chic cashmere cardigan from Equipment. Equipment cashmere sweater, $318 ( equipmentfr.com ).

Breathable T-shirt

A great T-shirt is the cure to all comfort issues. Acne makes the perfect breathable, thick cotton tee that is almost wrinkleproof. The fabric is thick enough to last you many months before it wears out and will hold its perfect boxy shape for many vacations to come. Acne Studios cotton T-shirt, $170 ( acnestudios.com ).

There's nothing worse than getting up after a long flight and seeing your legs drenched in sweat. Over the years I have come to the conclusion that jeans are the best solution to your comfort problems. A nice, worn-in denim, like this Simon Miller pair, is perfect for sitting on a cramped chair for hours because it doesn’t get baggy. Plus, the thick denim prevents the fabric from clinging to your skin. Simon Miller jeans, $320 ( simonmillerusa.com ).

Slip-on Shoes

The worst part of airport security is taking off your shoes, especially if you’re not wearing socks. I always love a slip-on shoe for the airport because it provides the comfort of a sneaker without the hassle of tying and untying. Common Projects makes the perfect slip-on shoes in sleek leather, and they also come in nude and black. Common Projects leather shoes, $305 ( thecorner.com ).

Pros and Cons of Different Types of Travel Styles

  • In the City / Outdoors

How you travel can completely change your experience. We could all visit the same destination, but depending on travel style, we could see the same place with a perspective that’s worlds apart.

Which Travel Style are You? Here are some Pros and Cons of Different Types of Travel.

I know in the travel world, people can get all cocky and turn their nose up at certain types of travel saying that it’s not “real travel” unless you’re traveling like a local. It’s just too bad that the locals will not accept you as a local unless you actually live there for an extended period of time. Some cities will never accept you even if you lived there 10+ years.

Though we agree, it’s hard to experience the world fully if you’re only open to one type of travel, we don’t want to discriminate because there are pros and cons of every type of travel style. We think you should try them all before deciding what’s the right fit for you.

PROS AND CONS OF EACH TRAVEL STYLE

1. backpacker / budget traveler.

Trying to get the most bang for your buck and typically involves staying at hostels, couchsurfing, and finding the cheapest transportation and eats.

Example:  My 6-month stint in Germany and Egypt with YWAM, where I lived out of a backpack (still need to blog about this).

Pros and Cons of being a Backpacker / Budget Traveler.

  • Not having to save a lot to travel.
  • Getting to see more for less $$.
  • Hostels typically have a great community built around them.
  • To make the most of it, you must have a flexible schedule.
  • Risky to travel with a lot of expensive electronics (cameras / laptops).
  • Some destinations won’t be conducive to budget travel.
  • More planning involved.
  • Less personal space.

2. Luxury Traveler

Traveling in comfort and style at the nicest hotels, restaurants, and with first-class flights.

Example:   Our stay at the Somerset in Turks and Caicos

Pros and Cons of Luxury Travel.

  • Comfortable living quarters with plenty of benefits. Who doesn’t like getting pampered?
  • Travel when it’s convenient for you.
  • Will feel well rested and like a true vacation.
  • Less sense of a community – most people like to keep to themselves.

3. Group Tour / Cruise Traveler

Joining a group / bus tour will help you see multiple destinations on one trip.

Example: We recently went to Spain , Portugal, and Morocco  with Contiki .

The Pros and Cons of Contiki and Other Group Travel.

  • You don’t have to worry about planning your day-to-day.
  • Meet and bond with other travelers from all over the world and sometimes make lifelong friends (we did)!
  • Get to see a lot in a short amount of time.
  • No sleeping in. You’ll always be on the go.
  • Activities are already set so there is less flexibility.
  • You may not get to see everything you want to see.

4. Private Tour / Travel Agent Traveler

If you don’t have time to plan, it’s great to use the expertise of a travel agent to help you book your trip. Pick what you want to do, and let them figure out the logistics.

Example:   Our trip to Galapagos Islands

Pros and Cons of Traveling with a Travel Agent or Private Tour.

  • Customized trips take you exactly where you want to go.
  • Perfect for smaller groups.
  • Don’t have to worry about transportation / logistics.
  • Paying the extra fee to someone to help you book everything.
  • You’ll stay within your group and rarely meet others.
  • Have to decide what you want to do before you go.

5. Adventure / Active Traveler

This is for thrill-seekers who are up for an adventure and a lot of times involves hiking / backpacking.

Example:   Our 4-day Hike on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Inca Trail (25 of the Worlds Best Hikes)

  • Visit places, hikes, and areas that the majority of people wouldn’t visit.
  • Challenge yourself and earn what you see!
  • You get a greater appreciation of a place.
  • You’re going to need a vacation after the vacation!
  • The destinations can be difficult to get to.
  • Can be weather dependent, so you have to be flexible.

6. Slow / Long Term Traveler

Staying in one destination for more than 6 months.

Example:  We’ve been moving to a new city every year ( Atlanta >> Los Angeles >> Las Vegas >> San Diego  >> Portland >> NYC ) to explore all its hidden gems.

Pros and Cons of Slow / Long Term Travel.

  • Dive into to the local culture by becoming a local.
  • Can go at a more relaxed pace and not feel rushed to do everything back to back.
  • Get the chance to explore more hidden gems.
  • Need a flexible job and way to finance a long-term trip.
  • You won’t have your friends and community around, so you might get homesick.
  • Experiencing different cultures for a short period can be eye-opening and even inspiring, but over time, you will find things that annoy you just like when you’re “at home”. Every place has pros and cons no matter how glamorous it may seem!

We also considered eco-tourism, voluntourism, foodie, and photography based travel, but we felt like most of them could be subcategories to the above. Right now, we lean mostly towards slow or long-term travel, since that’s what Local Adventurer is all about, but when we also go abroad, our travel style is a mix of all of them. We’ll also continue doing all these types of travel depending on the destination or what we want out of the trip. :)

Have you tried all these travel styles? Which one has fit you the best so far? Are there any we didn’t include?

xoxo esther

What’s Your Travel Personality? What’s Your Travel Style?

Travel PERSONALITY | Travel STYLE

If you’re considering an extended multi-destination or around-the-world journey chances are you’ve got a pretty advanced sense of curiosity about the world and a strong personality to boot. The first part of deciding where you want to go on your trip is to determine your traveling “personality,” that is, how you identify yourself as a traveler, the passion behind your planning, your modus operandi if you will. To help you identify yourself (and likely travel companions ), we’ve pinpointed a few basic travel personalities – one or a few are likely to fit your profile. You can use them to establish an overarching theme for your trip, or to divide up the world into those places that have a place on your RTW route and those that you probably don’t care to include.

Travel Personalities

Adventurous travelers.

If you imagine yourself bungee jumping in New Zealand, running with the bulls in Pamplona, dancing until 6 in the morning in Berlin, heliskiing from the top of a mountain in Banff or boating down the Amazon, all signs point to you being an adventure traveler. National Geographic has a list of the top adventure tour operators and outfitters worldwide that may be worth a look. Of course, you don’t need to be a part of a tour to have an adventure, but if you’re not sure what adventure travel means or if you just want an idea of what kind of companies operate tours and which ones to use, it’s a great place to start. Recommended destinations for adventure travelers : New Zealand, Brazil, Bolivia, Nepal/Tibet, Tanzania, India.

ROMANTIC TRAVELERS

If your travel dreams are populated by the perfect sunset on a secluded beach in the Seychelles, gondola rides in Venice, and a honeymoon for the storybooks, this is probably you. Travel can be an amazing way to connect with your partner, or even meet someone new! Check out Travel and Leisure’s list of  the 50 most romantic places for a general idea of what’s out there in the way of romantic destinations. The notion of taking off to far-flung places is a romantic idea in itself, so grab your partner, your passports, and get out and see the world. Recommended spots for romantic travelers : Santorini, Venice, Paris, Buenos Aires, Goa, Bali, Phuket, Fiji, Tahiti.

INTELLECTUAL TRAVELERS

If travel is just another way you broaden your internal encyclopedia with art, culture, and history, and your dream itinerary includes days filled with museums, archeological sites, groundbreaking architecture and traditional experiences, you may be an intellectual traveler. Lucky for you, destinations all over the world cater to the student inside of all of us. The world’s full of lessons, and travel is the way to learn them. Recommended regions for intellectual travelers : Europe, India, Japan, Machu Picchu, Istanbul, Cairo.

FIRST-TIME TRAVELERS

Will this be your first time traveling internationally? A little nervous about flying overseas? Concerned that you don’t know what you don’t know? Those are all normal concerns for first-timers. Don’t worry. There are lots of places that’ll present much less of a cultural shock where you can ease yourself into the world at large. You’ll be a pro before you know it. Recommended stops for first-time travelers : London, Paris, Rome, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand.

DANGER JUNKIES

If you prefer to live on the edge and explore destinations widely considered off-the-beaten-path or even unsafe, you’re probably a danger junkie at heart. Your ideal trip includes Ghana, possible brushes with the FARC in Colombia, or meeting some Maoist rebels in Nepal. Robert Pelton is your personal idol. You’re a risk taker and enjoy finding destinations that give you the thrills you desire. Of course, we caution our travelers to read US State department warnings, as well as the warnings posted by other nations (that said, many warnings can be colored by political agendas). Recommended locales for danger junkies : Tibet, Colombia, Uganda, Papua New Guinea

ALL, A COMBINATION, OR NONE OF THE ABOVE

Most people want to include elements of every different type of travel in their around the world experience, and we certainly encourage you to do so, too. The best way to prepare for an extended journey is to be completely honest with yourself about what you want to accomplish with your RTW trip and how you want to experience the world. The truth is that most travelers don’t fit neatly into one travel personality type. Still, it’s important to think about what kind of activities and attractions appeal to your personality, not just what cities you want to visit or on what airlines you’ll be flying. Another way to narrow down the endless possibilities while making complex travel plans is to identify how you like to travel, i.e., your travel style.

5 Travel Styles .

Traveling off the beaten path.

You’re not the average tourist. You want to add more layers to your travel experience and have rich cultural experiences every step of the way. You try things that more tentative travelers might skip. Popular tourists spots are crowded for obvious reasons—history, beauty, craftsmanship—but some of the most rewarding traveling experiences happen away from such places. Some of them are as simple as a cup of tea with a local shopkeeper in Turkey, or a conversation with local university students about politics in a bar in Colombia. Sometimes the proposition of striking out on your own in a place where you don’t speak the language is daunting, but it’s all part of the travel experience, and courage, not fear, reaps the greatest rewards in new places. Suggestions on how to get off the beaten path:

  • Go somewhere that’s not in your top 10 places to see.
  • Visit a village as opposed to a city.
  • Skip your first choice of continents.
  • Make a point of interacting with locals.

While it’s not easy,  you can get away from the camera-toting masses, perhaps right in the middle of the most visited city of all. Check with your personal travel consultant for help discovering that proverbial and elusive “hidden gem”.

Traveling In Style

You need a little comfort on the road, and you’re willing to stretch your budget a little to get it. There’s no shame in wanting fancy sheets and a warm pool every once in a while. If you’re going to be traveling RTW for several months, you may not want to always (or ever) go the cheapest route. A hot shower with good water pressure and a comfortable bed are a miracle after a few months, weeks or even days of traveling. Many of our clients like to book a few splurges into their trip, even if they’re trying to keep their costs down as much as possible. If you’re looking to keep your budget on track , you might consider doing this in parts of the world where a splurge isn’t that expensive. For example, maybe during your travels through Europe, you’d stay in budget hotels and hostels, but the night you arrive in Jaipur you might hire a car to pick you up at the airport and drive you to a 5-star hotel built into an old palace. Here are a few other ways where you might spend a bit more money to have better experiences:

  • Trek the mountains in Nepal with a guide
  • Go on safari in East Africa
  • Cruise to Antarctica from Ushuaia
  • Tour the Silk Road

You might also consider upgrading your long flights: a fully reclining seat for that 10 or 20-hour flight might just be worth the investment. AirTreks can accommodate first and business class upgrades for all or part of your trip, often for a discount.

Traveling with an Agenda

You have things to do, places to be, going from place to place with an angle, an agenda on your trip. People who are working weddings, studies, volunteering, practices or business into their RTW trip fit into this travel style. For some people, traveling isn’t about aimlessly wandering the world, bouncing from tourist site to tourist site — they hit the road on a mission with a strong sense of purpose and responsibility to themselves (and others) to motivate them and help them pull it off. Of course, as an individual, this can mean any number of things — maybe your life’s dream is to climb K2 or to take a perfect honeymoon at a resort in the Maldives and fit in a visit to Venice’s Grand Canal and the Eiffel Tower in Paris Or, maybe you have a meeting in Shanghai on Monday and a meeting in Bangalore on Thursday and need to be in San Francisco, then Toronto, then back to New York after that. Perhaps you’re on a wedding tour, paying respect to friends in Phuket and family in Rome, or maybe you just got accepted to study at an ashram in India. Perhaps you’re on a wedding tour, paying respect to friends in Phuket and family in Rome, or maybe you just got accepted to study at an ashram in India. Whatever your “must do” may be, it can form the linchpin of your trip and serve as something to build the rest of your RTW trip around.

Traveling to Get Immersed

Getting in touch with a place takes a little time. You’re the type of traveler that likes to move slowly, to connect with locals in ways you just can’t on a whirlwind trip. The Peace Corps is just one way to immerse yourself in cultures around the world, long-term, slow travel is another way to stay in a place over a long period of time to experience what daily life is like. A great way to stop, recharge the batteries and get in touch with a local way of life is to rent an apartment in the city of your choice. It slows you down and allows you to connect with a city from a local’s perspective, as opposed to seeing as much as you can every day to check things off your list as a tourist. You could even get a job, do the “metro, work, bed” routine for awhile. Teaching English is a popular and easy option in many destinations if you’re a native speaker.

Responsible Travel

You make a point of dedicating your travels to the greater good. As countries around the world develop faster and faster, and as the global community starts to see its impact on the environment, more and more travelers feel that integrating some aspect of responsible travel is essential on every trip. Lonely Planet defines responsible travel as:

“Minimizing your impact and maximizing your connection with people and the environment. It’s about making a positive contribution and having the most rewarding and inspiring travel experiences of your life.”

Our ground partner Global Basecamps offers sustainable tours, treks, and accommodations all over the world. Many volunteer organizations also have conservation projects you can participate in on your travels such as tagging sea turtles, beach cleanups, and cultural preservation efforts. You can also volunteer with organizations like Global Vision International or Volunteer Abroad .

If you want to immerse yourself in local culture on a smaller scale, there are lots of ways to do it. Edward Hasbrouck recommends visiting a local English school and volunteering to be a conversation practice partner for the day.

Independent travelers can play a vital role in fostering a universal attitude of respect by helping support local communities cultures in the hard work of maintaining their cultures and environments.

Fashion + Travel: How to Look Stylish While Traveling

Home » Blog » Travel » Fashion + Travel: How to Look Stylish While Traveling

Just because you’re living out of a suitcase doesn’t mean you have to lose your sense of style. Fashion enthusiast, Lisa Dauwalter, tells us how she manages to look trendy while traveling.

How to Look Stylish While Traveling

By Guest Author: Lisa Terese

When it comes to clothes, I’m pretty low maintenance – especially while traveling. Living out of a backpack makes it nearly impossible to look trendy every day, but I want to look a little less like I chose my outfit based on which articles stink the least (even if that is the case sometimes).

Lisa Terese has vowed to one year of no shopping, but still puts together killer outfits! Plus, Lauren Conrad called out her fashion blog, Lucid and Blue, which I think that makes her a full-fledged expert. Just like me, Lisa loves to travel, so I picked her brain about her go-to items and tips for looking put together, even if I’m carrying my closet on my back.

*All photos provided by Lisa.

1. What is one article of clothing you never travel without?

How to Look Stylish While Traveling

A wrinkle-resistant black dress. They exist in tens of thousands, in every style, for every body type. Go out and find yours! The key is something with a bit of stretch, which will keep it’s shape and keep wrinkles at bay. When I pack a black dress, I feel confident knowing that no matter where travel might turn, I will have something to wear that works – day, night, cocktails, you name it. I hoard black dresses; whenever I find a good one, I buy it.

2. Packing shoes is tricky because they’re often bulky. What 3 shoes would you bring on a long trip and why?

Exact styles will depend on weather and climate, but these three general categories will hit all your needs:

A wedge or stacked heel for night.  If you get stuck walking farther than expected (and you always do) you are in a shoe that is a bit more practical and way more comfortable than a skinny heel. Depending on the weather, you could do a wedge or stacked sandal, bootie (peep toe or closed toe), or even a boot! And, it goes without saying, pick a pair that will go with your (above) black dress. Easy!

Stylish athletic shoe. Great news for travelers: The whole athleisure trend is so strong right now, and will keep you comfy. For travel and exploring days, I always grab pair of Nike Free shoes. They’re not my usual running shoe, but they’re so sleek, lightweight, and come in fun patterns and colors – plus, they will work if you need to squeeze in a workout.

Supportive casual shoe.  Keyword: Supportive. Aka, not flats. I don’t know about you, but I cannot walk around in flats all day. These tend to be my most investment-heavy shoes, and I wear the heck out of them. Look for something with stability and support, but still fairly lightweight. Something you can walk in, and look great in. Like I said… Investment. Depending on the weather this might be a Birkenstock or a flat tall boot/bootie.

3. What is your go-to “plane outfit”?

How to look stylish while traveling

I always envy those girls in airports looking great in heels. But they also look ridiculous. I tried it once. Ridiculous.

If we are building outfits off the 3 shoe styles above, I will usually do the athleisure look with sneakers, but occasionally, if I know we have somewhere to be straight off the plane, I will wear a supportive casual shoe with denim. Here’s how these 2 options usually break out for me:

Sneaker: Yoga pants or crops, with a tank, and a couple different layers. Layers are so key: My temp is all over the map on travel days. The plane is cold, and then you sweat trying to make your connection. For layers, I usually do a lightweight long sleeve, and a cropped jacket or long cardigan.

Supportive casual shoe: Skinny jeans (with stretch!), with a tunic-length top, and a cropped jacket. The tunic length is good, because it covers any bagging-out your denim might have done on the flight, and keeps the look streamlined and polished. If we are headed out right from the airport, I will swap my shoes for heels in transit. Simple.

For both options, I always do a cross-body bag for hands-free ease. And, I know most people recommend scarves, but frankly, I have a hard time keeping track of one more thing, and I’m kind of germ-phobic about where it might accidentally fall or brush.

4. What are your favorite accessories that have multiple functions?

I’m not a big accessories person in general; I like simple sterling, gold and turquoise basics that work with most everything I wear. I’m also a little afraid of accidentally leaving something small and special behind, so I tend to travel with minimal-to-no jewelry. I like to buy jewelry wherever I visit, as a way to bring a piece of that place back home with me, so usually I’ll wear what I buy.

But when I do pack it, I go for something sturdy, statement-making, and cross-functional like a chunky hammered silver bracelet, or a long beaded necklace.

Aside from jewelry, in cold climates scarves are a great way to re-wear clothes while making the whole look new. For bags, I primarily use the cross-body I brought on the plane, and throw in a clutch for night.

5. If you could travel anywhere in the world and purchase an accessory or clothing item, what would it be? (For example, a leather jacket in Argentina, or a hand-woven scarf in Morocco.)

I really should pick something far away and exotic here, but I have to say, I would travel to the American Southwest and buy a giant vintage turquoise squash blossom necklace. I have been dreaming of getting my hands on one for years, and haven’t yet committed to throwing down the cash. If I lived in my hypothetical dream land and already owned one, I would board a plane to Italy and buy the best boots I could find. My love for boots borders on obsession.

6. Imagine you will be traveling through all climates and are only bringing a backpack. What is your strategy for being prepared for all weather while keeping your bag light?

Well, I can tell you one thing: We are not bringing zip-off camping pants, no matter how practical they might be. I am assuming I’ll be carrying all of this, so here’s the breakdown:

1.     Running skirt – to wear on hot active days, and to dress up with a tank at night (no really, I’ve done this before).

2.     J.Crew Pixie Pant  – The most-worn item in my closet, these leggings transition well day to night, and hold their shape between washings.

3.     Wrinkle-free black dress  – as outlined above in question 1.

4.     2 tank tops  in a technical/easily washable fabric

5.     2 t-shirts  in a technical/easily washable fabric

6.     A long cardigan  – 100% wool holds up best

7.     A cropped jacket  – I like a denim moto style

8.     A down vest  – packs small and keeps your core warm when you need it

9.     Sneakers/stylish athletic shoe

10.   Supportive short flat booties

These are the things I couldn’t live without. They could really be mixed and matched in an astonishing number of combinations. I know this for a fact, because of #1yearNoShopping! In addition to this list, I would reserve some cash to buy what I need where I need it (like a pair of sandals, or a rain jacket) and then leave it with a friend or donate it to a stranger when I moved on.

30 Different Types Of Travel Styles

There are so many purposes and ways of traveling that you may not even have thought of, but that’s what makes it so exciting. There isn’t just one way to travel – it’s what works best for you and the time in your life. To learn more about the types of vacations that you can take throughout your lifetime, here are 30 different types of travel styles that you can choose from. You may find that you veer more towards one category and are even a mix of a few different ones – and that’s great! Because the more you travel, the more you get to learn about yourself and others. Use this list to inspire travel in you, your friends, and your family. Or try them all and check each one off of your travel bucket list!

For Nearby Travel

1 – day trips.

Day trips are probably the easiest kind of trip to take as you don’t necessarily need to take any time off to make one of these happen. It’s also the cheapest way to travel as you can drive to your destination there and back within one day and you won’t need to spend on flights or accommodations. They also make for a very convenient getaway and work well for a quick change of scenery when needed.

You can even  Make Local Trips As Exciting As International Adventures For Every Traveler .

2 – Road Trips

A level up from day trips is road trips. Technically a day trip is a road trip, but when I’m thinking of road trips, I’m picturing that I’ll be gone for at least a minimum of 2 days and I can be anywhere within my province or even all the way across the country. You could even be doing road trips in another country as long as you have a way for transportation for your journey. It’s also a great way to travel according to your time and interests and perfect for seeing everything along the way.

Here are  22 Vital Lessons Learned On My Summer Road Trips  – you may find this useful as you plan our own.

3 – Weekend Getaways

Other different types of travel styles for nearby travel include weekend getaways. And I find these especially exciting and worth it if you have a long weekend getaway, with a statutory holiday or adding your own personal time off to your regular weekend. I like to take advantage of these kinds of time off and make it into a weekend getaway so that I can insert some adventure into my otherwise boring work week.

For destination inspirations, here are  Long Weekend Getaways For Canadians  to take.

For The Solitary Wanderers

4 – business travel.

If you’re lucky enough to get to go on business trips and it’s a location you would want to explore, take advantage of the opportunity while you’re abroad! Usually, you’ll either travel on your own or with coworkers. And if your significant other is able to, then you can bring them along with you and you can save on their hotel (and sometimes even food) expenses since it’s covered by your company. But for the most part, you’ll likely be traveling on your own – and to be honest, I rather spend the time alone away from coworkers while I’m on business trips after work hours. I’m already spending all day with them, I really need a break at night! I sometimes extend my business trip by a day or two, pay my own hotel and other expenses and explore the city I’m in. because who knows when or if I’ll ever visit again!

For those trying to take advantage of business travel, here’s  How To Work And Travel At The Same Time .

5 – Digital Nomad Travel

For those who are lucky enough to be location-independent and have the flexibility to work remotely at all times, this type of travel can be done anytime and anywhere. You can work and travel at the same time, for months on end and can move about as you please. This makes it so convenient for traveling purposes and exploring the world, and it really saves you time and money of having to take multiple trips when you need to request time off from work in order to get your “yearly vacation”. Of course, you probably need to keep in mind your country’s rules of how long you can be out of the country otherwise there will be tax repercussions or you lose your health benefits and such.

6 – Solo Travel

One of the most popular types of travel styles is to experience traveling on your own. It is a great way to get to know yourself and discover how you can adjust to being outside of your comfort zone. It also allows you to push the boundaries of what you are familiar with, be more present and alert wherever you are, and maybe even come out of your shell. There are so many positives to traveling solo, but of course you’ll need to be wary of your safety as well.

Here are the  Best Advice Solo Female Travelers Need To Know .

For Group Travel

7 – couples romantic getaways.

One of the types of travel styles that you may tend to go on more often as you grow a little older and wiser in your years are couples’ romantic getaways. I always find this to be fun as I love traveling with my significant other and seeing the world together and experiencing new activities that we don’t normally do back home. It’s also nice being able to focus on each other with slightly fewer distractions and spend time together and figure out how to travel together or even co-habitat for a short duration. Or if you’re already married, it’s always good to have those romantic times away together rather than just your weekly dates or nights out.

8 – Girls’ Trips

It’s always a good idea to go on a girls’ trip at least once or a few times in your life! It’s a great way to get to know your friends better, do the girly things you want, and go on adventures you’ll talk about for years to come. I’ve been on several of these with different girlfriends and had an amazing time, but I do also want to say that these trips can even make or break a friendship. Depending on how much you are on the same page, the things you want to do, or even how high maintenance someone can be – it’s something to take into consideration. But if you think your friendships are strong enough, these will be some of the best trips you’ll ever take.

Here are  8 Important Lessons I Learned When Traveling .

9 – Boys’ Trips

Just like a girls’ trip, a boys’ trip is occasionally needed as well. Having that guy time is important to let loose and be able to have that social connection that just isn’t the same with the opposite sex. Obviously, there will need to be a certain level of trust here because I know many women are not always okay with these kinds of trips. But I always think it’s healthy and much needed for my man to have his time with his friends. He’ll always appreciate it too.

10 – Family Trips

Another one of the most popular types of travel styles and probably one of the first kinds you’ll go on is none other than a family trip. It’s the perfect way for families to spend time together and have fun outside of their daily routines. The kids can have time away from school and the adults can take time off work to actually enjoy their hard-earned money with their families. It’s even better when you can go on these trips with extended families. My grandma used to take about 16 of us to go on family cruises every year and it was a major vacation we looked forward to all the time.

For Theme-Based Travel

11 – special occasions.

One of the most fun types of travel styles is those for special occasions. This can include birthdays, bachelor/bachelorettes, weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries, graduations, or whatever else occasion that may be important to you. It’s a sure way to celebrate an occasion to the next level and make it even more meaningful and memorable.

12 – Dark Tourism

Dark tourism may be a type of travel style that is not often taken, but it is an interesting one. It is a trip specifically to visit places where some of the darkest histories have taken place. It helps you better understand history as well as gives you an opportunity to immerse yourself in it. This could include war tourism, prison tourism, disaster tourism, ghost tourism, and more.

13 – High-Risk Area Traveler

If you can believe it, there are some people who like to take advantage of cheap flight tickets and travel to high-risk areas. Others who do fly to these high-risk countries may also be there for other reasons including photojournalism, visiting family, or just wanting that experience. Of course, you’ll need to go with a high degree of caution.

For Purposeful Travel

14 – culture tourism.

Traveling for the sake of learning about your or others’ culture and history is a kind of trip that is taken quite often as well. Educating yourself through travel and absorbing a different country’s culture that way is one of the best ways to do it. You can take the time to learn some of the language, traditions and values, foods, and even religion to better understand the country and its people.

15 – Event Travel

A big reason for many people to travel can include an important event like a concert, a sporting game, a convention, a fashion show, or others. Sometimes these events don’t always happen in your hometown and you need to head to the nearest city or country to be able to attend these sorts of things. It’s a great reason to travel and you can even allocate some leisure travel and fun time while you’re going on your trip for these purposes.

16 – Sustainable Travel / Ecotourism

These types of travel styles are based on the principles of sustaining the environment as well as the social, and economic values of a country or place. This kind of responsible travel takes into consideration and prioritization the conservation of the environment, the well-being of the locals, and aims to minimize the negative impacts of traveling to a certain location. Being more eco-conscious and aware of how you can positively or negatively impact a place that you visit during your travels can make a world of a difference to the community there. You can consider staying at  hotels  that are more eco-friendly, such as those that are committed to carbon-zero existence and those that integrate waste reduction and incorporate elements of nature to reuse water or produce energy.

17 – Nature And Wildlife Tourism

Going on a trip solely for nature and wildlife is a specific type of travel style that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is a great experience to enjoy if you do go on one of these adventures. For example, the Great Migration safari in East Africa is a sight to see and you’ll be able to experience seeing all the herds and millions of animals going across Kenya and Tanzania. Even going gorilla trekking, visiting penguins in Antarctica, and exploring the Amazon are some pretty serious wildlife adventures to go on!

18 – Volunteer Travels

One of the most meaningful types of travel styles is volunteer travel. You’re spending the time, money, and effort to go to a different country and volunteer to help them improve their community, build homes or schools, and even water systems. Mixing humanitarian work with recreational travel is an opportunity that can serve both you and others. I have always wanted to volunteer at  Habitat For Humanity  to help build houses abroad, and I hope to be able to do so one day. If I am able to find other causes that I am interested in, I will definitely add it to my list!

19 – Religious Tourism

Religious, spiritual, or sacred tourism are types of travel styles with a goal of pilgrimage or education through the exploration of religious artifacts, places, monuments, and sacred sites. One of the most well-known religious journeys is the pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia or Israel’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

20 – Slow Travel

A type of travel style that is gaining popularity is slow travel. Because of the longer length of time spent, or being more intentional with what you do and where you go when visiting a foreign country, you are able to take the time to explore, self-reflect, and understand the history, culture, and environment of a particular area. You can better connect with the local people and their way of life, which in turn can impact both you and them in a way where you can’t if you were constantly jumping from place to place, only seeing the tourist attractions. Being in the moment and being present to support local businesses and giving yourself time to be a part of it all will provide more meaning to your travels.

Health And Wellness Travel

21 – health and wellness.

For those who are prioritizing their health and wellness, these types of travel styles have the purpose of self-care, relaxation, and finding yourself. Yoga and detox retreats, rejuvenation getaways, and even sports retreats prioritize physical and mental health. With how fast-paced everything is nowadays, sometimes this type of travel will really do you wonders and come back home with a different perspective on taking care of yourself.

22 – Medical Travel

Those who are seeking medical procedures sometimes opt for an out-of-country experience since they either do it better, or the prices are much cheaper than doing it at home. For example, flying to Gangnam, South Korea for facial treatments and even surgery is cheaper than doing it in North America and cost a fraction of the price you would otherwise spend at home. Brazil is also well-known for their body enhancement surgeries and many fly there to get some work done as well. Others also fly to different countries for non-elective procedures and it could be a matter of life or death. But always keep in mind to do your research and to choose a practitioner who is well-known, regulated, and legal! There could be so much that could go wrong especially when you have to do an invasive procedure and you want to make sure this will be a good experience for you.

Relaxing Getaways

23 – ocean lovers.

One of my favorite types of travel styles is for ocean lovers to experience a relaxing getaway in the water. Seeing or being near water rejuvenates the soul and instantly makes me happy and I love diving and exploring the ocean to see all the sea life. It’s also a challenge to the body as well. Beach vacations are one of the most-taken trips when someone decides to travel because it really revitalizes you and it’s all about rest and relaxation.

24 – All-Inclusive Getaways

The easiest type of vacation to take are the all-inclusive getaways. You don’t have to worry about much especially when you pay one price and your flight, accommodations, and food is all included. The most you’ll probably have to think about is what excursion you want to take if you want to escape from the resort property or what you’ll be wanting to eat for your next meal. These are great for first-time travelers or if you are traveling in a large group as everything is mostly already organized for you.

Fun Travel

25 – adventure travel.

For those who love adventure and new experiences, this type of tourism involved some level of risk and potentially needing certain skills and physical strength to do. This could include camping, backpacking, sailing, rock climbing, ziplining, cave diving, and more. It’s about connecting with the new location you’re in while challenging your mind and your body to stay active as well as quench the adventurer thirst in you.

26 – Culinary / Gastronomy Tourism

A very exciting and rewarding type of travel is to go on vacation just for the food! Having your palate guide your adventures and where you go next and fulfilling your food cravings (probably brought on by all the food TV shows) can be very satisfying. You can take cooking classes abroad, try to visit all the night markets and street food stalls, eat at all the best restaurants in a certain country, and participate in local culinary festivals. I don’t necessarily travel for food, but it’s one of my favorite things I look forward to when I’m visiting a new destination. Even in my hometown, I’m constantly looking at new restaurants to visit and my list has grown to over 300 – not sure how I’m going to do it all, but I’m going to try.

Extravagant Travel

27 – gambling tourism.

Gambling tourism is widely growing and these types of trips are for those who can manage their money and have good discipline and self-control – although that is not always the case. Traveling to a location where gambling is legal and popular – such as Las Vegas, Singapore or Macau – is all about the fast, luxurious, and extravagant lifestyle. If your only intention is to gamble, these types of trips are not for the faint of heart. My brother once told me when his friend worked at one of these hotels, he got tipped a luxury car!

28 – Fashion Tourism

For those who are very fashion-oriented, flying to Milan or Paris is just another day. Attending fashion shows around the world and getting custom designs at famous ateliers is the purpose of your travel – it’s something you live and breathe. If you are a boutique owner, it’s also normal to take these frequent trips to different destinations to source your jewelry and meet your suppliers for new designs and stock.

29 – Luxury Travel

Probably one of my favorite types of travel styles is luxury travel. This travel style is all about lavishness, comfort, indulgence, and pampering. It’s always nice to have these kinds of vacations as a way to treat yourself, do something special for your significant other, or have an experience you wouldn’t normally have. As high maintenance as you may think I am (haha!), this type of travel doesn’t always work for me as I am very adventurous and sometimes a little too practical – I worry more about exploring a new country than getting spa treatments there. But when I visit a destination that is for luxury travel, I love to take it all in, relax, and get the treatment I deserve! I know a lot of people only vacation this way since it’s a lifestyle that they’re used to, and I wouldn’t suggest otherwise if it’s how they like to travel!

Other Types Of Travel Styles

30 – budget travel.

Completely opposite of luxury travel is budget traveling. For those who are intent on experiences and  visiting as many places as possible , budget travel is what makes sense and can save you a lot of money to do other things. Being cost-conscious and always looking for the next best deal by booking a flight with multiple layovers, staying at low-cost accommodations like hostels, and only paying for budget-friendly foods and experiences can help you go a lot farther if you are comfortable with these choices. The less money you spend at once, the more you can spend for a longer period of time in multiple places – or you can of course allocate this towards other expenses that are important to you.

For those who would rather stay home, here is  How To Plan The Perfect Staycation .

12 Travel Garment Bags to Look Good Everywhere

Be wrinkle-free everywhere you go

street style in paris may 11th 2020

Every product on this page was chosen by a Harper's BAZAAR editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

But choosing the best travel garment bag for your needs can be a challenge. There are a lot of options on the market, so we asked an expert about how to find the right one. According to Tumi creative director Victor Sanz, “Your garment bag should be sturdy, functional, and sleek. If you’re frequently traveling by plane, a garment bag that folds to fit carry-on requirements is essential.” He adds, “You want to find the size that will fit all your clothes without having to overfold them and will allow you to reach your destination in style.”

It’s also important to consider bonus features, like pockets and organizational compartments, and, as Sanz notes, “A crucial function is to ensure that you’re able to hang your garment bag when you arrive at your destination, so that you can prepare your outfits as easily as possible and to ensure that all your clothes are crisp.” Keeping all this in mind, we found the 12 best travel garment bags out there today. Once you start using one of these, you’re never going to go back.

MZ Wallace’s signature quilting isn’t limited to the brand’s totes, appearing here in garment bag form. The thin design is extremely lightweight, ideal for quick trips when you need to bring one to three outfits. There is even an exterior pocket for bonus storage.

Dimensions: 22" × 3" × 39"

Materials: Oxford, leather

What reviewers are saying: “I have been interested in a MZ Wallace garment bag for a while. It is perfect! Just right proportions and size. Thoughtful design and construction details.”

Tumi always delivers premium luggage that will last you over a decade, and this garment bag is no exception. Sanz says: “It’s foldable, with a sturdy handle for easy carrying, making it convenient and compact for every type of travel. I also love that it has several zipper pockets, so I can pack my toiletries and other travel essentials all in one bag. When I arrive at my destination, I hang it in the closet and I know that I will be ready to go.”

Dimensions: 15" x 22" x 6"

Materials: Ballistic nylon

What reviewers are saying: “This bag stores so much for a carry on. I was able to comfortably fit 2 suits and more for a destination wedding!”

This duffel has been receiving high praise ever since its release. A few of the reasons it’s so popular: The duffel is carry-on friendly, water-resistant, and has interior and exterior pockets. And those are only a few of its distinguishing features. Choose an original or compact size for the style that suits your needs.

Dimensions: 22" x 12" x 12"

Materials: Polyester

What reviewers are saying: “The Garment Duffel is a great purchase, especially for anyone in an industry that takes short frequent trips. This garment bag is actually designed to fit inside of your carry-on, rather than serving as a stand-alone piece. The water-resistant exterior protects against spills, and exterior zip pockets hold small accessories. It gets the job done, while taking up the least possible amount of space.

Dimensions: 40" x 19"

What reviewers are saying: “I use this bag when I need to workout at work. I go from a suit to athleticwear in minutes.”

I have taken it on many flights, buses and train rides and have never had an issue with fitting it in the overhead bin on both longer-haul flights and short budget-airline carriers.”

Hartmann’s garment bag adds contemporary touches to an otherwise traditional design. The result? A chic, useful travel accessory that will stand the test of time. The padded shoulder strap and multiple interior pockets enhance the convenience of this style.

Materials: Nylon

What reviewers are saying: “Hartmann was an anniversary gift from my work place, and I am still proud to own it 35 years later.”

What reviewers are saying: “It’s easy to maneuver and overall great quality and very neat design (many compartments and zippered areas).”

For golfers and non-golfers alike, Stitch makes a duffel that is water- and stain-resistant, and includes a hanger hook, shoulder strap, elastic shoe pockets, and webbed handles. You can even get it customized with your initials.

Dimensions: 22.5" x 11.5" x 12"

What reviewers are saying: “Love it! Fits into the airplane overhead bin, no trouble bringing it along as a carry-on bag. Very sturdy, zippers are tough enough. Shoulder strap is removable. My suit arrived in top shape using this garment bag. Highly recommended.”

Get off the grid in glamour and comfort.

The Best Glamping Resorts in the U.S.

Glamping resorts offer both adventure and luxury.

If you're enticed by the idea of camping but don't want to deal with the inevitable grunt work that comes with it, glamping (or glamorous camping) is the perfect compromise. Read on to discover the most unique glamping resorts in California, Florida, Tennessee and other destinations across the U.S.

The Resort at Paws Up: Greenough, Montana

Exterior shot of snowy cabin at The Resort at Paws Up.

There's glamping, and then there's glamping at The Resort at Paws Up . One of the pioneers of modern-day glamping, The Resort at Paws Up offers six exclusive glamping camps (with prices to match), each one offering a different experience. Solo travelers and couples will love the two-story Tree Haus at the resort's adults-only retreat, called the green o. North Bank Camp – with three-bedroom, two-bathroom tents – is ideal for large families. You can book an individual tent or, if traveling with extended family and/or friends, even an entire camp. Guests can even bring along a furry friend, as this resort is dog-friendly.

Glamping guests enjoy a dedicated camping butler and, because this is an all-inclusive resort , three gourmet meals with alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages daily. Select activities such as mountain biking and snow tubing are covered in nightly rates. For additional fees you can also take advantage of the many unique guided activities and excursions you don't find at most resorts, from snowmobiling to hot air balloon rides. On-site transportation and shuttle service to and from Missoula Montana Airport, about 35 miles away, are also included in your stay.

While the lodging and amenities make Paws Up one of the best glamping resorts in the U.S., it's the staff members who have earned this resort rave reviews from previous guests. The Resort at Paws Up offers glamping mid-May through mid-October, while the green o is available for stays year-round.

Address: 40060 Paws Up Road, Greenough, MT 59823

As KOA's first foray into glamping, Terramor Outdoor Resort offers luxury tent accommodations near Acadia National Park in Maine. All tents feature electricity, Wi-Fi, portable heaters and coolers plus other convenient amenities, though the types vary in capacity from two up to five guests and whether they have a bathroom. This family-friendly resort features an abundance of amenities that travelers love, including a pool and hot tub, lawn games, live entertainment, evening campfires, stargazing lectures, and an on-site restaurant and bar where guests can enjoy craft cocktails and regionally sourced beers. Pets are also welcome at Terramor, especially in the on-site dog park.

Terramor is a designated stop for the Island Explorer, a free shuttle service that transports visitors to Acadia National Park, downtown Bar Harbor and other areas of interest on Mount Desert Island. The Island Explorer operates seasonally, from mid-June to mid-October.

Backland: Williams, Arizona

Opened in 2022, Backland is a remote resort with four glamping options: Backland Suite, Grand Suite, Sky Suite and Grand Sky Suite. The latter two feature a view of the stars from a 16-foot skylight over the bed, but all four are fitted with panoramic windows for breathtaking views of the Arizona wilderness. These luxury tents accommodate up to either four or six guests, plus no more than two pets. Each features king-sized beds, a full en suite bathroom with a shower, luxury linens, electricity, automatic climate control, an outdoor patio, a coffee maker, a minifridge, housekeeping services and some toiletries.

Backland purposefully doesn't offer Wi-Fi in the tents – only at reception – as guests are encouraged to unplug during their stay. Instead of doomscrolling on social media, you can enjoy bird-watching, stargazing and roasting s'mores over a campfire. There's also a tented spa, a restaurant and a pond with a beach. Glampers at this resort say they appreciate the cozy accommodations and peaceful atmosphere.

Backland is located less than 15 miles from downtown Williams, Arizona, close to some of the best places to visit in Arizona , including Flagstaff (about 40 miles away), Grand Canyon National Park (less than 60 miles) and Sedona , which is a roughly 60-mile drive from the resort.

Each dome is equipped with king- and queen-sized beds; sustainably sourced cotton bedding; a large fan; a toilet; a custom rainfall shower; Public Goods bath amenities; Turkish bath linens, bathrobes and slippers; and a yoga mat. The Sunshine State is synonymous with theme parks and beaches , so you might be surprised to learn you can also go glamping in Florida.

At Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo near Kissimmee, you can spend the night in a variety of luxury glamping accommodations, each with a private bathroom and kitchenette: Choose one of the climate-controlled luxury tents or the Luxe Conestoga Wagon, which has space for up to six guests. Regular glamping tents with separate bathroom facilities are also available. Guests of all the glamping accommodations enjoy perks such as coffee and pastry deliveries each morning and access to a personal concierge; if you opt for one of the three luxury glamping options, another special amenity is a golf cart for roaming the property.

Not only is Westgate River Ranch considered a glamping resort, but it's also the largest dude ranch east of the Mississippi. Guests are encouraged to take advantage of this property's activities and amenities: airboat and swamp buggy rides, horseback riding, an archery range, a petting farm, a weekly rodeo, an on-site steakhouse and more. Resort activities, including VIP tickets to the rodeo, are covered in rates for glamping guests staying in one of the two luxe accommodations, making the experience nearly all-inclusive. Previous visitors agree this relaxed resort is a fun alternative to the nearby theme parks in Orlando .

Complimentary breakfast is available to guests of the hotel's nine glamping tents, another highlight of this eco-resort .

Available for stays from May to October, each cone-shaped tent features either one king bed or two twin beds, plus plush pet beds for up two dogs. The accommodations are also equipped with a private porch, two lounge chairs, a hammock, plenty of natural light, and heaters and fans upon request. Its glamping units bring wood floors and chandeliers into a canvas tent, with each offering an outdoor bathtub, a fire pit, a table and chairs, a small fridge and coffee maker, and sleeping accommodations for two. These tents are scattered around the property, so views range from the lake to the forest. All units are dog-friendly and feature a private bathroom.

When you're not white-knuckling the roller coasters at Silver Dollar City (considered one of the best amusement parks in the U.S. ) or uncovering history at the Titanic Museum Attraction, take time to enjoy the resort's activities such as golfing, hiking, or boating and fishing on the lake. Other amenities include pools and hot tubs, a fitness center, and a canteen with grab-and-go bites and beverages. Previous guests rave about the setting and conveniences of glamping at this resort.

Alila Ventana Big Sur: Big Sur, California

Glamping

There are few destinations in California that offer luxury in a place where you would otherwise have to rough it. In Big Sur , a region that is only accessible via one road and doesn't always offer electricity, travelers will find a limited selection of five-star accommodations – among them Alila Ventana Big Sur .

The resort offers safari-style tents in a 20-acre redwood canyon, all equipped with plush beds, electric lamps, instant hot and cold potable water with sinks, and power outlets with USB ports. Glampers can also make use of amenities for enjoying the outdoors, such as Adirondack chairs, wood-burning fire pits and picnic tables. Restrooms and showers are available at a shared, well-maintained bathhouse.

Glamping guests can purchase the Spa Alila Day Pass, which includes one 50-minute massage or facial, one poolside entree and one nonalcoholic beverage, plus full access to the meadow pool, infinity hot tub and sauna. You also have the option to enjoy fine dining at The Sur House on-site. Some parts of the Alila Ventana Big Sur grounds are reserved for resort guests only, so glampers will not have access to certain facilities.

If you want to glamp in Big Sur, you might also consider Treebones Resort, which offers yurts with king beds and modern furnishings, as well as accommodations you're not likely to find elsewhere. The Autonomous Camp Collection's twin units, which can best be described as a full apartment fit into a tent, take glamping to the next level; this solar-powered, upscale option is complete with a bedroom, en suite bathroom, lounge area and outdoor deck. For a more rustic but no less unique stay, the Human Nest campsite is exactly what it sounds like – meaning you'll need to bring your own bedding and tent for protection from the elements when you sleep on the futon pad inside this wood art.

Something else Treebones Resort has that you don't find at most glamping resorts? Sushi. The Wild Coast Sushi Bar features an omakase dining experience in which patrons sit face to face with the chef, who uses their reactions to craft the 14-course tasting menu. Previous guests say it's an absolute must when staying here. You can also dine at The Lodge Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner.

Other on-site amenities include a massage studio and yoga. The rugged coastline views at Treebones Resort rival many in the area, and glampers may also choose to explore the beauty of Big Sur through guided excursions.

Additionally, guests have access to detached private bathrooms located a short distance away.

Sinya on Lone Man Creek: Wimberley, Texas

Glamping

Courtesy of Sinya on Lone Man Creek

Experience the beauty – and the award-winning wineries – of Texas Hill Country at Sinya on Lone Man Creek, a property inspired by a trip to Tanzania and named after a baby elephant in Kenya. This glamping retreat is situated atop a ridge, making you feel as if you're in a treehouse overlooking the beautiful surrounding greenery and Lone Man Creek. The creek's name aptly sets the scene for this exclusive experience, since the property consists of only one tent – but it can accommodate two guests, so there's no need to be truly "lone" if you don't wish to be.

This singular tent is decked out in beautiful country-style furnishings and outfitted with a king-sized bed (not to mention goose-down pillows), a Nespresso coffee maker, a sofa, a kitchenette and a bathroom, which features a claw-foot tub, bathrobes and Turkish towels. Venture outside and you'll find the resort has five furnished outdoor spaces for lounging, including a deck with a hot tub and shower. Recent guests, many of whom visited with a romantic partner, appreciate the seclusion of this glamping resort.

The Ranch at Rock Creek: Philipsburg, Montana

Glamping

Courtesy of The Ranch at Rock Creek

This five-star dude ranch in western Montana, frequently lauded for providing one-of-a-kind travel experiences, also specializes in glamping. Like the rest of its property and offerings, The Ranch at Rock Creek takes its glamping to the next level.

Glamping accommodations start at nearly 800 square feet and are part-tent, part-cabin. With 10 such dwellings in four different styles – some of which are open year-round – options for amenities vary. Inside these "canvas cabins," you'll typically find spacious bedrooms, additional living areas, gas stoves, attached bathrooms, and outdoor spaces such as porches or decks. Guests can also sleep in a Conestoga wagon with a king bed and twin bunks.

What's more, glamping accommodations qualify for the resort's all-inclusive rate, which covers farm-to-table meals, drinks, transportation on the ranch and airport transfers, as well as resort activities like horseback riding and archery. Peak season at this property spans late May to early September, but the property is open year-round. The Ranch at Rock Creek exceeds expectations, according to previous guests.

Located less than 30 miles north of Fairbanks , Borealis Basecamp unfurls across 100 acres and offers igloos and cubes in lieu of tents, further elevating the one-of-a-kind experience.

These igloos feature cozy beds, Wi-Fi access, private bathrooms with showers and hairdryers, free toiletries, and skylights so guests can fall asleep admiring the aurora borealis when visible. The cube accommodations feature most of the same amenities, but instead of skylights, guests enjoy floor-to-ceiling windows and "treehouse" beds with viewing windows just for kids, plus an en suite bathroom. Not surprisingly, recent guests say staying at Borealis Basecamp was one of the most unique experiences they've ever had.

Little Raccoon Key: Jekyll Island, Georgia

Glamping

Courtesy of Little Raccoon Key

Little Raccoon Key – a small, uninhabited island accessible by a short boat ride from Georgia 's Jekyll Island – stands out from most other glamping destinations in the U.S. for one reason: There's just one campsite available. Not only will you have the entire reef island to yourself, but you'll be pampered by staff from start to finish. In addition to your private-island accommodations and the short boat tour there that often passes dolphins, you can request chef-prepared meals, pre-arrival grocery delivery and a lesson on oyster reefs around the island at no extra cost.

Your campsite features most necessities, such as a luxury canvas tent, a memory foam mattress, a gas grill, a stove, a kettle, other cooking supplies, and an outdoor shower and toilet. You can also take advantage of the Adirondack chairs, board games and books. While Little Raccoon Key provides a cooler for ice, it's recommended to bring your own so you can store several days' worth of food, since there's no refrigerator. You also won't find running water or air conditioning at this solar-powered island camp, but you'll be provided with a battery-powered fan. Note that Little Raccoon Key requires a two-night minimum stay.

Tents also feature hardwood floors, a private tented balcony complete with rocking chairs, lanterns with USB ports, and a writers desk and chair. Upgraded tents come with electricity, though it's important to note that none have private bathrooms; instead, there's a shared bathhouse with eco-friendly products.

Guests can also expect to enjoy artisanal spirits at the on-site bar as well as delicious (and complimentary) breakfast each morning, thanks to co-founder Emma Frisch, who was a top finalist on season 10 of "Food Network Star" and has her own cookbook. Previous guests praise the resort staff's hospitality.

Glamping

Kennebunkport is known for its beaches and quaint downtown area, which often leaves the nearby green spaces overlooked by visitors. But Sandy Pines Campground offers travelers the chance to experience these underrated landscapes in Kennebunkport without sacrificing proximity to the water. Guests can choose from a variety of unique accommodation options, including Airstreams, Conestoga wagons, cottages, huts and traditional glamping tents.

The tents for couples are decorated to the nines – some with chandeliers – and outfitted with a king-sized bed, a seating area, a private deck, a mini-fridge, lighting, air conditioning and a small heater, and bath amenities. The family tent options have similar features but come with either a daybed in the main tent or a separate smaller tent with twin beds.

Guests can take advantage of glampground amenities such as bathhouses, a saltwater pool, the General Store and Snack Bar, laundry facilities, bike and water sports equipment rentals, and lots of activities for kids. Speaking of younger guests, previous visitors say Sandy Pines Campground is especially ideal for families.

Mendocino Grove: Mendocino, California

Glamping tents in Mendocino Grove.

Find a serene glamping experience in one of California's most breathtaking small towns . Mendocino Grove sits within a forest bluff adjacent to the town, affording spectacular views of the camp's towering trees and the coast.

Most glamping tents sleep two guests, but some sleep up to four or six. You'll also find some options that are dog-friendly. Beds vary in size and come with down comforters and wool blankets; the adult beds also feature heated mattress pads. All tents come equipped with fire pits, picnic tables and limited electricity for powering lamps (which have USB ports) as well as other approved devices including CPAP machines. Private decks with leather butterfly chairs complete the glamping accommodations.

Other on-site amenities include two shared bathhouses with organic products (plus a dog wash), hammocks, a bocce ball court and yoga. Enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and cocoa at The Meadow Commons, which also offers Wi-Fi and lends out books and games.

Huttopia: Multiple Locations

What started as a small campsite in the French Alps in 1999 has since expanded to more than 60 locations across three continents, including five U.S. sites in California, upstate New York, southern Maine and New Hampshire's White Mountains. Huttopia's goal is to provide travelers with comforts that go above traditional camping but aren't so comfortable that you'll stay in your tent rather than explore the beautiful surroundings of its properties.

All tents and cabins offer plush beds and electricity, while some have private bathrooms, kitchenettes or kitchens, and decks. Shared bathhouses are available to guests who don't have private toilets and showers. The company's newest U.S. location, Huttopia Wine Country, opened in 2023 in partnership with Northern California's Six Sigma Ranch and Winery. Overlooking the region's rolling vineyard hills, it features a swimming pool as well as French camping cuisine – from espresso to crepes to brick-oven pizza – at its on-site Café-Bistro.

AutoCamp: Multiple Locations

Matt Kisiday | Courtesy of AutoCamp

If your idea of glamping is spending the night in an RV – but you don't have the budget or patience to buy one – it's time to explore AutoCamp. This glamping resort company specializes in Airstream accommodations, with six locations (and counting) ranging from national parks to beaches. Airstream amenities vary slightly by location, but you can expect plush beds (including dog beds upon request), spa-inspired bathrooms, heating and air conditioning, basic cookware, and fire pits with grills.

Families love the BaseCamp Mini Suites – an Airstream with an adjacent tent for kids – available seasonally at select resorts; another unique lodging option at some sites is the BaseCamp Suite, which is part-Airstream, part-tent. All locations offer traditional standalone glamping tents as well as accessible accommodation options.

Like the accommodations, some of the on-site programming varies by resort. For instance, AutoCamp Yosemite and AutoCamp Zion (the newest property) have pools, while the Cape Cod location has a playground. But all of AutoCamp's outposts are dog-friendly and offer complimentary cruiser bikes (first come, first served), Wi-Fi and coffee; they also promise on-site stores for provisions, including wine and beer, and an experience you won't soon forget.

Lakedale: San Juan Island, Washington

Off the coast of Washington state, Lakedale offers year-round glamping on San Juan Island, a picturesque place that can only be accessed by ferry or floatplane. Here, year-round glamping accommodations consist of yurts. Each comes with a king bed, full-sized sleeper sofa, an en suite bathroom, a wet bar, a fridge, a flat-screen TV, a skylight, seating indoors and outside, and private decks with hot tubs.

In the summer months, travelers also have the option to glamp in a canvas cabin or cottage, ideal for families with space for up to six guests. Complimentary on-site activities at Lakedale include lawn games, bike rentals and water sports on the resort's three spring-water lakes.

The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls: Logan, Ohio

Surrounded by the lush forests of Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio, the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is one of the most romantic getaways in Ohio . Choose from fully equipped cabins and cottages (some of which are pet-friendly) as well as yurts and geodomes. Each insulated yurt has a king bed or two twin beds, a full bathroom, a kitchenette that includes a gas log stove and microwave, a wood deck, and rocking chairs. The geodomes, outfitted with one king bed, have similar amenities to the yurts, plus a dining table and sofa.

All guests have access to a full-service spa and a restaurant, lauded by guests for its food (which includes complimentary breakfast); both are located in 1840s-style log cabins. Of course, you'll also find outdoor activities galore, from hiking to stargazing at nearby John Glenn Astronomy Park, named for the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth.

The Vintages Trailer Resort: Dayton, Oregon

The Vintages Trailer Resort offers 36 trailers in a variety of styles, nine of which welcome dogs and all of which make the perfect home base for those exploring Oregon's Willamette Valley, otherwise known as Oregon wine country. Trailer styles and designs vary, but all offer comfortable beds, bathrooms – or at the very least toilets – air conditioning and heating, and kitchenettes or outdoor grills. Separate shower facilities are also available. Pro tip: Book the 1956 Spartan Royal Mansion trailer in the warmer months to stargaze from an open-air soaker tub.

The on-site amenities at The Vintages Trailer Resort are almost as good as the trailers themselves – think: a seasonal swimming pool, fire pits, a general store and complimentary cruiser bikes for enjoying Dayton, the gateway to several local vineyards. Even better is the staff, whom previous guests praise in their glowing reviews of the resort.

What fliers need to know about new refund rules for airlines

Starting in about six months, u.s. airlines will have to offer customers cash refunds before vouchers.

style in travel

New federal rules for airlines will go into effect later this year, giving travelers a better picture of the full cost of flights before they book — and getting them an easier refund if things go awry.

After a process that lasted more than a year, the Biden administration announced the rules on passenger protections Wednesday.

“This is a big day for America’s flying public,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a news conference at Reagan National Airport.

While the trade group Airlines for America said its members “abide by — and frequently exceed — DOT regulations regarding consumer protections,” consumer advocates praised the administration’s move.

“These rules are not only critical but also common sense,” said William McGee, senior fellow for aviation and travel at the American Economic Liberties Project, who spoke at Wednesday’s event.

Most new rules go into effect in the fall

At the event Wednesday, Buttigieg said that “the bulk of these protections” will go into effect in about six months. Others will start in a year.

That means refund rules that get customers automatic cash refunds when airlines cancel or significantly change flights won’t be in place during the busy summer travel season. But they should be set in time for the Thanksgiving and winter holiday season rush.

Buttigieg said that the department expects airlines to take some time to develop the processes to return cash to travelers, but added that he doesn’t want them to drag their feet.

“They don’t have to wait the number of months that it’ll technically take for this to go into effect,” Buttigieg said Wednesday. “They could and should be doing this right now.”

You should get refunds without having to ask

Instead of first offering a voucher or credit, airlines “must automatically issue refunds without passengers having to explicitly request them or jump through hoops,” the Transportation Department says. The refunds need to be issued within seven business days for credit card purchases and 20 calendar days when bought through other methods.

However a traveler originally paid is the way the refund needs to be issued, the rule says, whether that’s by credit card or airline miles . Other types of compensation are allowed only if a passenger chooses one of those alternatives.

“No more defaulting to vouchers or credits when consumers may not even realize that they were entitled to cash,” Buttigieg said.

You can still choose to be rebooked

If travelers’ flights have been canceled or significantly changed, they can still continue with their trip. Passengers are only eligible for a refund if they have declined to accept alternative transportation.

Airlines will have to pay for delayed bags and broken WiFi

There are many ways for a trip to go awry, and the new rules cover more than just a late or canceled flight.

If a checked bag isn’t delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight arriving at the gate, or within 15 to 30 hours of an international flight arriving, depending on how long that flight is, passengers will be entitled to a refund of their checked-bag fee. They will need to file a mishandled baggage report.

Refunds will also be given if passengers pay for a service such as WiFi, seat selection or in-flight entertainment and the airline fails to provide.

‘Significant’ changes will be the same for all airlines

Automatic cash refunds are due to passengers if their flight experiences a “significant change.” But what does that mean? Previously, the definition could vary from airline to airline.

The new rules provide some consistency. A change is considered significant if a departure or arrival is different by more than three hours for domestic flights or six hours for international trips.

Other changes considered significant: the departure or arrival is from a different airport; there are more connections; passengers are downgraded to a lower class; or service or flights are on planes that are less accessible for a person with a disability.

No more hidden fees for bags and seat selection

The rule on extra fees — what the Biden administration refers to as “surprise junk fees in air travel” — will require airlines and online travel booking sites to disclose up front the fees for a checked bag, carry-on bag, reservation change and reservation cancellation. Those fees must be clearly noted and not shown through a hyperlink, the rule says.

Consumers must also be informed that they don’t have to pay for a seat assignment to travel and that a seat will be provided without an additional price.

“Healthy competition requires that, as a consumer, you comparison shop, which means knowing the real price of a trip before and not after you buy,” Buttigieg said. “Airlines will now be required to show you these costs up front, so you have all the information you need to decide what travel option is best for you.”

Travelers can either search without providing their personal information to see standard fees or, after entering their information, see more tailored fees that might apply given their military status, frequent-flier membership or credit card use.

“The final rule puts an end to the bait-and-switch tactics some airlines use to disguise the true cost of discounted flights,” the Transportation Department said in a news release. “Prior to the rule, some airlines were offering deceptive discounts that consumers may have believed applied to the full fare that was being advertised but only applied to a small portion of the ticket price.”

You will still have to report complaints

Buttigieg said the main way for the department to find out about a violation of the rules is when people submit complaints through the site flightrights.gov . But he said he hopes that by making refunds automatic, there will be less need for complaints — and more flexibility for employees to perform audits or spot-checks of airline compliance.

Europe-style compensation is still not in the rules

Some travelers heading to or from Europe who experience delays under certain circumstances are entitled to compensation worth more than $600. That kind of system does not exist for domestic flights in the United States, but Buttigieg said it is on the agenda.

“On compensation, we continue to develop that — and to be clear, with this rule on the books, that does not stop or slow the progress that we’re driving in terms of a compensation rule,” he said.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

Hoka fans, listen up: Nordstrom Rack is hosting an under-the-radar sale on some of the brand's best-selling styles . You heard that right, the retailer has secretly discounted a handful of road running sneakers , trail running shoes , and more that are perfect for your next adventure.

There are few running shoes out there that have gotten as much love as Hoka sneakers have in recent years. These podiatrist-favorite , celebrity-obsessed , and Travel + Leisure editor-loved shoes boast unmatched comfort, support, and style that lends itself well to walking, running, and of course, traveling. But with so much buzz around the brand, it can be hard to find them in stock — let alone on sale. So when I saw that a secret stash of them were on sale at Nordstrom Rack, I knew I just had to alert the masses.

Below, I’ve gathered up the best seven deals and on-sale styles, including the ultra-cushioned Hoka Bondi X Running Shoes and the best-selling Gaviota 4 Sneakers that are up to 47 percent off; prices are starting at a mere $90. But you have to act fast, because with how popular these sneakers are, sizes are selling out quickly .

Hoka Women’s Bondi X Sneakers

Nordstrom Rack

Built with the brand’s signature Bondi cushioning, these massively discounted sneakers are specifically designed for all-day comfort, whether you’re running a marathon, exploring a new city on foot, or simply trying to navigate a busy terminal. They’re sporting an impressive $75 off discount and are available in three different colorways. But if you want a pair, you’ll have to act fast because sizes are selling out quickly.

Hoka Men’s Bondi X Sneakers

Nordstrom Rack has another pair of the top-rated Bondi X sneakers available in men’s sizing and five different hues for a mere $140. Sizes and availability depend on the style, and for the best chance at scoring a pair, I recommend checking out the Fiesta/Amber Yellow colorway that I’m happy to report is fully in stock (for now). I’m confident that this lightweight running sneaker will be the hero of your travel shoe collection with its excellent cushioning that absorbs impact for flexible comfort with each step.

Hoka Women’s Gaviota 4 Wide Sneakers

Designed for wide feet, these sneakers are crafted with impressive cushioning not only on the soles, but also on the tongues and linings for all-around foot comfort. With so much support, these kicks are among the best pairs on the market for their comfort — so much so that they were awarded the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Approval in the athletic footwear category. Available in sizes 7 through 10 (including half sizes) in a light blue colorway, these are the sneakers that you're going to want in your travel stash this season. Be sure to check them out while they’re on rare sale for 29 percent off.

Hoka Women’s Gaviota 4 Sneakers

You can also score deals on the Gaviota 4 Sneakers in regular sizing during this flash sale. These plush sneakers are available in a stunning coral hue with baby blue accents, which are perfect for any and all of your spring travel outfits that you have planned. They’re also on sale for an impressive $120, and I’m positive that they’ll sell out over the next few days (if not within the day), so if you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to get your hands on a pair of these top-rated sneakers, now is your chance.

Hoka Men’s All Terrain 6 Running Shoes

These aptly named sneakers are the impressive, all-purpose shoes that’ll perform just as well on the trail as they would during an open road run. In fact, shoppers brag that they are “amazingly comfortable” thanks to their ultra-plush cushioning. They’re also on major discount for nearly half off, which is unheard of for Hokas — so if I were you, I’d run , not walk, to add a pair to your cart.

Hoka Men’s Tecton X Running Shoe

These sneakers are inspired by the Earth’s tectonic plates, which influenced the design of their carbon fiber plates that are “poised to unleash a seismic shift in trail running,” according to the brand. In other words, these shoes are meant to absorb shock, pressure, and movement for easy, comfortable running on any terrain. Beyond comfort, these sneakers are also crafted with grippy outsoles to keep your feet firmly in place, no matter what. I miraculously found them fully in stock, so don’t think twice about adding these all-terrain kicks to your collection.

Hoka Men’s Zinal Trail Running Shoes

This pair of sneakers boasts a breathable mesh and durable yarn construction to make the ultimate trail running shoe that’ll let you stride over rocks, uneven ground, sand, and more with ease. And if you aren’t a runner, no problem: these same features lend themselves to being an excellent day hike-ready shoe, as they can take you through even the toughest of terrain with unmatched support and durability. Get them for $60 off today.

Prince Harry Offers Rare Peek Into His and Meghan Markle's Montecito Home

Here's what's on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's bookshelves.

preview for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s California Life

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

The Duke of Sussex joined virtually from his home in California. "Travel and tourism relies on destinations, held together by communities, without which we have nowhere to travel to," Prince Harry said during a panel conversation. "Communities are the beating heart of travel, and we must do better by the people who are the custodians of the places we visit."

a man in a room

The background of his Zoom offered a rare peek into what we're guessing is his and Meghan Markle's Montecito home. Specifically, we're focused on the three books on the middle shelf behind him: They appear to be Daily Oracle: Seek Answers from Your Higher Self by Jerico Mandybur, California: Living + Eating: Recipes Inspired by the Golden State by Eleanor Maidment, and The New Mediterranean: Homes and Interiors Under the Southern Sun published by Gestalten.

There's another stack of books on the top shelf, but Harry's head obscures them in the video. Also on Prince Harry's shelves are two decorative parrots that appear to be extremely similar to the porcelain birds that decorated Charles and Princess Diana's Kensington Palace home :

prince charles, prince of wales and diana, princess of wales

We also spotted framed photographs, and a framed piece of art of Meghan's outfits from their 2021 New York City trip by illustrator Jennifer Vallez . Vallez posted on her Instagram , "We have some real International internet Nancy Drews!"

This isn't the only Vallez print they own; in February, a drawing of their 2021 holiday card was also spotted in the background of Prince Harry zoom. She wrote , "Omg. I am DYING!!!! A year or so ago, Meghan’s assistant requested prints of some of the drawings I created of her and Harry. I never expected to see that they REALLY have them in their house."
