Fishing Kayak Review: Sun Dolphin Journey 10

Buyer’s Guide | Kayak Angler

T he Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is a recreational sit-on-top kayak designed for kayak fishing. A low price, widespread availability, and ease of boarding have made the Sun Dolphin Journey 10-ft fishing kayak popular for use as a fishing kayak on slow-moving rivers, lakes and bays.

Recreational kayaks are a class of kayaks loosely defined as being geared toward the novice paddler and those seeking stability as a priority. The less-prioritized values of recreational kayaks are often speed or high performance maneuverability. For these reasons, recreational kayaks like the Journey 10 SS are often best suited to more protected bodies of water.

Sit-on-top kayaks such as the Sun Dolphin Journey 10, are a popular choice among kayak anglers. The open design concept makes it easy to store gear and tackle in accessible spots, including tankwells in both the bow and stern. The Journey 10 also offers active anglers three rod holders; two located directly behind the cockpit and one swiveling rod holder installed near the bow.

Sun Dolphin is a Michigan-based kayak brand manufactured in the United States. It is the largest kayak manufacturer in the world by production volume. Not surprisingly, Sun Dolphin kayaks are found at many popular retail chains in North America, including Walmart and Tractor Supply. The production volume and distribution of Sun Dolphin has made them one of the most common kayaks on the water in North America.

Performance

Stability is usually a priority for paddlers considering a recreational fishing kayak like the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS. Users often state the Journey 10 SS stability feels lacking until they have gotten used to paddling it. This feeling of instability is tied to the shape of the hull.

Kayaks are often described as having two forms of stability. These are initial stability and secondary stability. When it comes to the Sun Dolphin Journey 10’s stability, there is a slight deficit in initial stability, the reassuring feeling often provided by a wide, flat hull. This provides the sense you are sitting on a large platform on calm water. If a kayak lacks initial stability it creates the immediate sensation you are going to capsize easily, but this is not necessarily the case.

The rounding of the hull to the large sidewalls of the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 provides its secondary stability. Secondary stability allows the boat to rock from side to side and recover without capsizing. This comes into play as waves pass under the boat in choppy water.

The ability of the Journey 10 SS to travel on a straight path (known as tracking) is limited. Tracking performance is achieved through different elements of kayak design. On a recreational kayak without a rudder, the shape of the hull plays a large factor. A skeg protrudes at the stern of Journey 10 SS to improve tracking somewhat. One of the trade-offs with tracking is maneuverability. If a kayak does not track well then the flipside is it is generally more maneuverable. This maneuverability is helpful in tight winding streams, or turning around at a dead-end canal.

Market and demographics

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is a recreational fishing kayak, meaning the design prioritizes stability and comfort over speed and high performance. A recreational kayak like the Journey 10 SS was designed with calmer waterways in mind. These can be sheltered lakes, estuaries, or slow-moving streams. Being a generally wide and short kayak, it offers more in the way of stability and maneuverability than speed and efficient travel.

Recreational kayaks often use less expensive materials in production and come in with a lower sticker price. This, combined with the above-mentioned beginner-friendly characteristics, make the Journey 10, and recreational kayaks in general, good options for newer paddlers.

Wear A Life Jacket

  • Everyone, even strong swimmers, needs to wear a life jacket at all times when on the water. It is extremely difficult to put a life jacket on once you fall into the water. Even a light wind can blow any paddlecraft away from you, faster than you can swim.
  • Always wear a USCG-approved Level 70 or Type III life jacket designed for paddling.

For those interested in the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS, duck hunting has proven to be a popular pastime. Again, the open floor plan of the sit-on-top design provides room for accessible storage and gun holders can be mounted to the deck. It also helps that the Journey 10 SS is produced in dark colors like olive green. This makes it a straightforward process to deck out your Journey 10 in a camouflage pattern to stay off the radar of nearby waterfowl.

About the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS

Design features and details.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is a sit-on-top kayak. This means the majority of design elements including the seating area known as the cockpit, are molded into the deck of the kayak. So, you sit on top of the Journey 10 SS. This is in contrast to a sit-inside kayak where you slide your legs into the hollow hull of the kayak through the cockpit opening and may use a spray skirt.

One design feature of the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS to note are the scuppers. These are the drain holes commonly found around the seat and tankwells in a sit-on-top kayak that drain any water that may have entered the cockpit from splashing waves or rain.

Take note of the scuppers, because users often report the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS leaking, with scupper holes being a likely ingress point. Just how does a sit-on-top kayak leak? There are seams and screw holes on a kayak which, if not sealed properly, can allow water into the hollow center of the sit-on-top hull. Over time the hollow inside of the kayak collects some water.

If you encounter the Journey 10 leaking at the scuppers, especially when the kayak is new, you should contact the manufacturer for warranty. If buying used, inspect the scuppers as carefully as possible to assess integrity.

A slight amount of water entering inside the kayak at a screw hole is more common. This can usually be fixed with a flexible, waterproof sealant or rubber gasket. If leaking does occur, it can be dealt with. Water inside the kayak can be emptied using the drain plug mentioned in the outfitting segment.

Material and construction

In the case of the Journey 10, Sun Dolphin uses UV-stabilized Fortiflex, a high density polyethylene. High-density polyethylene, regularly referred to as HDPE, is a common material used in kayak hull manufacturing, and you may know it from goods like plastic milk jugs. The UV-stabilized aspect is an additive impregnated in the plastic to protect it from some of the ill effects of sun exposure. HDPE is generally an inexpensive yet durable plastic.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS accessories and outfitting

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS features a number of outfitting components and accessories commonly found on sit-on-top fishing kayaks.

Starting at the bow, the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 has a carry handle, and just behind the carry handle is a drain plug. The drain plug is there to empty any water that enters the hull of the Journey 10. Be sure this drain plug is closed before launching.

Alongside the length of the Journey 10 is a recessed ledge with a bungee cord which combine to serve as a paddle holder. Paddle holders may be one of the most important yet easily overlooked outfitting components of a fishing kayak. The fact that your paddle is floating away should be the last thing on your mind when you have a fish on the line.

Within the forward end of the cockpit are adjustable foot braces. These sliding foot braces provide multiple positions for comfortable and powerful leg positions while paddling or landing a (big) fish.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 has a molded seat shape. There is however no padding, and unless you purchase a seat pad of your own, you will be sitting directly on plastic.

Under the seat you will also notice the scupper holes. Scuppers are the drain holes commonly found under your legs and seat within the cockpit and tankwells in sit-on-top kayaks. Any water splashing into the kayak drains out through these holes. This also means water can splash up through the holes, so expect to have a wet seat during a day in the Journey 10.

Behind  the seat there is also an adjustable, padded backband to provide some support for an upright seating position.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10-ft fishing kayak has two molded-in tankwells for storage. One at the bow, and another toward the stern. These tankwells are triangular in shape. While they can easily accommodate smaller bags and boxes, they do not fit the milk crates kayak anglers commonly use to organize tackle.

Sun Dolphin makes a removable storage hatch to fit inside the tankwell on the stern of the Sun Dolphin Journey 10. The hatch, which Sun Dolphin refers to as the PAC (Portable Accessory Compartment), has a screw-on deck plate and easily pops in or out of the tankwell, under the bungees. The PAC provides a choice as to which storage style you use, closed or open. When installed, it provides a dry storage area. Removed, you have an open stern tankwell. In addition to the PAC there is a small hatch between your legs in the cockpit to keep small items and personal belongings stowed away.

The Journey 10 includes three rod holders. Two rod holders are flush-mounted into the kayak deck directly behind the cockpit. The other is an installed, swiveling rod holder toward the front of the cockpit. The advantage of the swiveling rod holder is that you can have a rig ready to go at the first sign of action.

Paddle Sober And Smart

  • Never mix alcohol and paddling. Coast Guard and state BUI (boating under the influence) laws apply to all vessels. This includes canoes, kayaks, SUPs and rafts.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS kayak mods

Kayak anglers are known for making modifications to their kayaks. This could mean adding a fish finder, upgrading a seat, and installing accessory mounts among others. A number of compatible Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS parts are available to modify your kayak.

On chilly days or when paddling calm water you may want to keep water from splashing up the holes in the bottom of the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS. Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS scupper plugs are available directly from the manufacturer and are easily removable.

Accessory tracks are available from brands like Scotty . These accessory tracks are especially helpful for electronic components, or if you want to set up a GoPro to bear witness to your fight with a trophy largemouth or snook.

If the built-in paddle bungee isn’t working out for you, consider a paddle clip. These can be purchased from brands like RAM . Like Scotty, Ram makes just about every fishing kayak accessory you can think of.

Considering you are sitting on a plastic floor, a Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS seat upgrade may be at the top of your list. The Journey 10 SS has a molded plastic seat, but no seat padding included. An easy fix is to purchase a block of mini-cell outfitting foam and shape the seat you would like. You could also purchase a seat pad such as the Yak Gear Sand Dollar cushion. Kayak anglers are also known to install more elaborate folding seats with a bit of DIY knowhow.

Adding a trolling motor is one of the most popular upgrades anglers make to their fishing kayaks.  There is no Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS trolling motor available directly from the manufacturer.

If you would like to add a trolling motor to your Journey 10 it will require after-market mounts and some DIY knowhow. Users have mounted trolling motors to the stern of the Journey 10 or placed trolling motors alongside the Journey 10 by inserting a self-made frame in the rear rod holders to run the motor to the side and just behind the paddler.

However you decide to upgrade your seat in the Journey 10 it is probably wise not to permanently obstruct the scupper holes.

How the Journey 10 SS compares

As a popular, sit-on-top fishing kayak available at major retailers there are a number of kayaks the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 can be compared against.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 vs 12

The Journey 12 is another sit-on-top fishing kayak model produced by Sun Dolphin along with the Journey 10. The Journey 12 is 12 feet long in comparison to the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS at 9.5 feet. This makes the Journey 12 slightly faster than the 10, but also adds a small amount of weight.

Both kayaks feature the same tankwell system for storage, and have the same outfitting components.

A major difference in the design of the Journey 10 and Journey 12 is found in the scuppers. The Journey 12 completely lacks scupper holes, meaning the water is unable to drain out of the kayak once it enters the cockpit. The Journey 10 has two scupper holes located under the seat of the paddler.

The scupper holes in the Journey 10 allow water to drain out from under your seat. The downside is water can also splash up through these holes. Especially with the Journey 10, users have regularly reported leaks developing in the plastic at the scuppers leading to water within the kayak.

Scuppers are a common feature of sit-on-top kayaks, and may factor heavily in the decision for paddlers when choosing between the Journey 10 vs 12.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS vs Lifetime Tamarack 100

The Lifetime Tamarack 100 is a sit-on-top fishing kayak intended for a similar use as the Journey 10 SS. The Lifetime Tamarack 100 is just slightly longer than the Journey 10 SS, at a true 10 feet compared to the 9.5 feet of the Journey. The Tamarack is also an inch wider than the Journey at 31 inches, providing the Tamarack with an edge in stability.

Two design features which stand out when deciding between the Tamarack 100 and the Journey 10 SS are the scupper holes and skeg.

The Tamarack features six scupper holes throughout the cockpit of the kayak compared to two under the seat of the Journey. This means water will exit the Tamarack faster, but also provide more places for it to splash into the cockpit if the kayak is riding low.

The skeg protruding at the stern of the Tamarack 100 also appears more pronounced than the Journey 10. This can provide the Tamarack with better tracking to travel in a straight line, but results in less maneuverability. Both are factors to take into account when deciding between the two.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS vs Bali 10

If fishing from your kayak is not your main concern, the Bali 10 may be another model from Sun Dolphin that compares to the Journey 10 SS. The Bali 10 is the same length as the Journey 10 at 9.5 feet. It also features similar tankwells on the bow and stern. Both have a very comparable hull design.

The major difference between the Journey 10 and Bali 10 is the built-in rod holders. The Bali 10 does not have pre-installed rod holders. The Bali 10 is also produced in a brighter color scheme.

For those not focused on fishing or hunting, the Bali 10 would make a suitable option for recreational paddling.

Carry A Waterproof VHF Radio, Use Your Phone Only As A Backup

  • A handheld VHF marine band radio allows you to communicate with the Coast Guard and other boat traffic. Use Channel 16 only for hailing and emergencies. The radio should be waterproof, because it is virtually certain to get wet.
  • A cell phone, even if in a waterproof case or sealable bag, might not work, so don’t rely on it as the primary means of emergency communication.

Where to buy the Journey 10

The easy availability of the Journey 10 SS is a contributor to its popularity. A number of large retailers carry the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS, including Walmart, Academy, Tractor Supply and Canadian Tire.

Pros and cons

  • Widespread availability
  • Sit-on-top design
  • Accessible tankwells
  • Built-in rod holders
  • Lack of initial stability
  • Users report leaks
  • Lack of seat cushion

We purchased this kayak to replace and 8' Lifetime kayak that we had owned for 3 years. When examining it in the store we were impressed with the storage, adjustable footrests and the padded knee rests. Easily holds all the needed fishing gear.

My husband took it out first, and was not impressed with it at all. So, I decided I needed to take it out and give it a spin. After having the Lifetime, this one did not measure up, at all. First, when I sat on top of the kayak, I thought it was going to tip me into the water. Not good. Still determined, I took the paddle and went off with the rest of the group. I had a hard time keeping up as the kayak just would not track straight. Very uncomfortable with the stability. I knew right away, being in my 60's, that this was not the kayak for me. I finished out the day trip, then went home and sold it.

If I could give it negative…

If I could give it negative 5 stars I would. This is the worst tracking and by FAR THE LEAST STABLE yak I've ever been in and I won't even get into scupper and storage issues. Do yourself a favor and pay up for quality, you won't regret it.

I use this Kayak on a reservoir to fish for hours. Pretty stable and easy to paddle. I mounted three rod holders and 2 side mounted handles for convenience, (1 in the front and 2 in the rear). I made a small wheel cart to transport from car to water & return using old lawn mower wheels and a frame to a tub chair. I bungee cord the cart to the rear while I fish so I don't have to bring back and forth from the car. Rear compartment is adequate size for storing medical supplies and safety gear. I stuffed extra foam padding anywhere I could to maximize float-ability.

After 2 years of reading reviews and looking around for a good deal, I finally decided to pull the trigger. TSC had a great deal on this yak. $229+tax. It came with a paddle, removable rod holder, seat cusions, and the big storage compartment. I'm a newbie still, but this thing goes straight if you paddle deliberately. If you aren't paying attention, you can make it veer off course easily, which I would think is true of most kayaks. Imo, most negatives about tracking and tipping are user error. It was a little shaky at first, but once I found my center, I had no issues. 6' 187lbs. The adjustable foot rests are great. It took a few adjustments to get it where I wanted them. The seat back is adjustable as well. I can't say that I'd want to hook into a big fish on it, but I guess that would depend on your ability to stay balanced. Overall, from a rookie, a good kayak.

It is amazing and it is easy to mount a fish finder on and a good way to start a kid on. Im 15 and I use it all the time to fish local bass fishing tournaments in Arkansas.

I give this a 3 because it is in the middle of the rating scheme. I got a Journey 10 SS for Christmas and have not actually had a chance to use it yet. That being said, Mine came with real nice scupper plugs and dual skegs, unlike what I have been reading about. My only complaint so far is length. It is advertised as a 10 ft kayak. Mine measures exactly 9 feet.

I bought this model kayak 2…

I bought this model kayak 2 years ago after I got my husband into kayaking and couldn't get him out of my Ascend. First 5 minutes on the water, I thought I'd hate it. But I had to get used to its difference in stability and tracking. Once I did, it was fine. I've used it a LOT! Great for the price! Haven't ever tipped. Have taken my dog out for rides in it, too. Couldn't find plugs to correctly fit the scupper holes, so I got a rubber seat cushion for about $6 that keeps my rear dry and also provides a little comfort.

Plug the scupper holes and…

Plug the scupper holes and you won't get wet. Put a skeg on it and it'll track like an arrow. A set of home made outriggers will make it stable enough to stand up and fish.

Rookie here, I read reviews…

Rookie here, I read reviews on this kayak before I bought it. I was on the fence. I had to find out for myself. I wanted to have fun, this kayak is unstable doesn't track very well. If you spend a little time in it you learn to control it and doesn't feel as tipsy. I made it work for me, but it took the fun out of the experience. It was too much work to have fun and I really never felt relaxed. I liked all the features it had. I never did feel confident enough to reach behind me. As far as getting wet, not a problem with that. I went in knowing that you get wet in a kayak. This is a lightweight easy to load and unload kayak . If you don't mind working for your fun this is the kayak for you. I know that it is a $300 kayak and one shouldn't expect perfection. There are better kayaks out there for $300. Pelican, Future Beach. Remember that they are $300 but not as much work for your fun.

I am very pleased with this…

I am very pleased with this kayak. For it's price point it's a great value. I've read a lot about tracking issues but have not experienced any my self. My kayak is new purchased 8/2019. My hull has 2 skegs as part of the mold, a padded seat bottom and only 2 scupper hols near the seat. It also included scupper plugs & I've never had a wet butt. When I look up this model online it shows 6 scuppers, no seat pad and everyone complains about finding the plugs??? Has Sundolphin updated this model? The paddle is not very good, but at least you get something included where as most other fishing kayaks include nothing. The storage is great and so far mine has proven to 100% dry but I'm not banking on that. If you're on the fence, go for it. It's an inexpensive way to get off shore. For what it's worth, I am 6'1" and weigh 200lbs.

We purchased three of these…

We purchased three of these Journey 10 SS sit-on 10' kayaks from Tractor Supply. We took them straight to the lake. Within 10 minutes my seat had an inch of water in it and I was soaked. My husband and son (who do weigh a little less) were only slightly wet in the seat area. My advice to you - if you will be using these in calm water - plug the scupper holes! I went to Field & Stream and bought a Pelican Trailblazer 100 NXT sit-in 10' kayak. I stayed perfectly dry! It doesnt have all of the fancy compartments or rod holders but I love my Pelican.

This has been fun and…

This has been fun and frustrating at the same time. Although tippy at first, i realized it had everything to do with my confidence on the water in a new kayak. Track was not perfect but ot is a10 footer. I found super plus at big five. I modified them with a pair of scissor s cutting off the second plug. Fit its now snug.. like a glove. I got mine for a great price and i don't worry about breaking on rocks, gravel or sand. Drilling and doing modification is not scary. It isn't an expensive water craft. Get over and get out there...live

So far, I love my new…

So far, I love my new baby!!! Took a little getting used to just cause I'm used to borrowing a "sit in" kayak. This is a sit on. But i can definitly fish from it. Now i just gotta name & chrissan her;)

Bought this kayak hoping to…

Bought this kayak hoping to get a decent angling sit on top kayak for a reasonable price. Well, I have bad news for you, these cheaper sit on top kayaks just aren't worth fooling with. This particular model, the Journey 10, is the tippiest boat I've ever been in. If you come anywhere near the capacity limit just forget it. My wife, who weighs 140 pounds less than the weight limit had tipping issues with it too, so I know it's not just my size. Not to mention this thing does the aquatic equivalent of a 360 donut once you stop paddling (terrible tracking). Lesson learned, if you want a decent sit on top, you're just gonna have to shuck out the extra dough. Don't waste your time with this thing. The fact it was selling at Walmart should've been a red flag.

Great kayak for bass fishing…

Great kayak for bass fishing in lakes and rivers. Holds all of my gear and then some. Only negative is that it does not track the best.

It's been an awesome kayak.…

It's been an awesome kayak. Great for beginners. Have been fishing on it a lot. Never tipped it, reeled in 39" carp on it. Doesn't track the greatest, and has no live well in the vessel. Needs a better paddle than what is provided. 4stars mainoy because of how the scupper holes are designed. It's very hard to find plugs that will fit if you like to plug the scuppers, they aren't completely cleared of plastic, so you have about a 3/4" hole then down about an inch and the hole shrinks to about 1/4 inch.

The journey 10 SS is…

The journey 10 SS is incredibly fun to use. It is super light weight, and very easy to transport. It does a fantastic job on the water and is very comfortable. It has a lot of storage area and will suit all your needs. I would recommend and do recommend this kayak for everyone.

Bought it a week ago, have…

Bought it a week ago, have been on it every day since. Clarion river, French Creek, pymatuming, Conneaut lake, and a few swamps and large ponds. Works slendidly, it's a 10 ft kayak with no skeg, no outriggers and..... It's 10ft. It's only gonna be so stable. If you can't handle it buy a sit in ya googan. Anchor trolley, skeg, good paddle, not the crap some retailers include with them. Take out the back storage and let it float behind you with a piece of 550 holding it on to the ring your seat is attached to. I'm going to attach my deck cleat on the right side so I can tie my anchor off, us let some 550 and deck eyes to make a trolley. Excellent kayak, super customizable, or good the way it is.

Ive owned this kayak for 2…

Ive owned this kayak for 2 years now. I think all the negative talk from other reviews is unfair. Remember its a 10 ft kayak under $300. It doesnt track great, but when you only have a 10 ft kayak, only the more expensive ones really do. Its not made for standing, if you want to stand get a 12 or 14 foot yak. But to sit in, its more than stable enough. In two years ive probably been out 150+ times, never flipped or even came close to getting wet. I couldnt find the right scuppers for these holes, though i didnt look all that hard for them. I found some wine corks that fit perfect. I have never taken them out, they stay in all the time and my butt has never gotten wet. And i dont have a seat or any type of cushion. As long as your not an idiot splashing water all over yourself, you should have no problem staying dry. Its easy to modify and not a big deal to drill holes for accessories or whatever you want to do, as i imagine it would be scary with a $1000+ kayak for most people. People just always have to complain about something. Bottom line is, if youre a beginner, or even a veteran on a budget, or youre not sure if kayaking is for you, its a cheap way to try it out. Its more than suitable to fish with. Use it for a few years, then step up to something better if you find it lacking. I got mine from wal-mart and their return policy is excellent, should you have an issue with it. Basically you cant expect perfection from it, but if you have realistic expectations of how a $300 kayak should perform, then youre good. Btw I weigh about 225 and i carry a small anchor and a lot of gear, so if its stable for me it should be for most people. If youve never kayaked before it does feel a little tippy at first, but within an hour or so youll learn how to balance and move on it, and that sensation goes away very quickly. Give it a chance.

This is a great little…

This is a great little kayak. Been using it on rivers and lakes with zero problems. Can access front and rear storage areas with ease. Sondolphin has scupper plugs that don't leak. Use those under the seat for a dry bottom and regular plugs up front for easy removal. I added a anchor trolley system and fishfinder. First thing I did was removed every screw and seal and added silicone. Has never got any water in the hull or storage areas. Stability is fine. Have run it sideways up on logs and stumps and it has yet to flip.

I picked up one on sale for…

I picked up one on sale for $229. I consider myself an experienced paddler that has paddled both canoes and kayaks for over 25 yrs, so keep that in mind. I started out launching the Journey on a small river and paddled a half mile against the current with the wind in my face. For a 10 ft sit on top, it passed that test with no problems. When I turned around and paddled with the current I was smiling ear to ear. I was able to go super fast, stop and hold the kayak still and spin around at will. She went exactly where I wanted her to, all the while being extremely stable. I had no problems with tracking at all. Sure, my feet and butt were a little bit wet but that's to be expected when paddling. I haven't used it to fish yet so I can't comment on those features but the swivel rod holder is in a good spot and I like the fact that the rear storage compartment is easily removable. Great kayak for the money.

LOVE MY NEW KAYAK ! ! ! ! !

This is my second year with…

This is my second year with my Sundolphin Journey 10 SS. It took a bit of getting use to but I love every butt soaking minute on the water.

Perfect kayak and great price.

First, i would like to say that all kayaks smaller than 14 feet track weird and I say this because I got used to my brothers 14 ft kayak and then purchased a 10ft kayak. The 10ft kayak I got was lifetime angler it tracked differently than a 14ft kayak and once I figured it out I fell in love with it. I now have 10ft kayaks for my whole family plus I just got a Journey 10 ss that you ride on top of for free on a pallet I got from a wholesaler for 250 bucks. I have tested it out on the water and found no issues with it tracking left it goes where I want it to. the drain plugs don't let me get wet by allowing water in the kayak I, of course, don't excede the weight limits or even come close to it which may be the reason some of the reviewers are getting soaked. The tipping issue is a personal thing because I can freely move around on this with no concerns of tipping over. the dry storage it good for exactly that license and cell phones along with food and has easy access.

Great kayak

Great kayak! I've only had I a few months but I haven't had any problems. I've turned it completely on its side and it righted itself without flipping me in the water. It does great in the river or lake. You can take motor boat wakes straight on or from the side without any issues. At first I had the problem of it pulling left with me then I read about how to control that by foot pressure. I'm still learning that technique but I'm doing much better. For the people that complain about getting wet...don't you intend to get wet when you get in the water? That's one the main reasons I go to the lake or river--cool off on a hot summer day. Seriously, after owning this kayak for a few months and just now reading some of these reviews, I must say I think some of these people writing reviews didn't know what to expect from a kayak. It's a great kayak! We've had tons of fun and plan to do more before winter hits. I do agree that the back compartment is hard to open and close but seals tight if it is closed correctly. That is the only negative to this kayak.

Bought kayak at Walmart in Burlington iowa.

Kayak did not have plugs. Manager said it didn't need the. That there is a certain amount of water supposed to be in bottom of boat. Ha. I laughed at them. They said it was a self bailer. So now if have to find plugs. Going to bass pro shop.

If you make a few changes this is a great kayak

When I first bought this kayak I was very disappointed. I use the dry well behind the seat to hold drinks while on the water and primarily fish while on the kayak. The problem I found was you instantly tip once you attempt to turn around and get into the dry well. I ended up buying some pvc and designed my own outrigger for under $30 and was done in less than an hour. It looks corny as hell but I can do whatever I want in it now...turn around, fish, or even stand up while casting. It now has incredible stability and is practically impossible to flip. I recommend to everyone who enjoys fishing without wanting to tip over to do the same. If your not willing to however this may not be the kayak for you when it comes to fishing...to tippy all by itself

It Floats......but thats about it

The price is right, it floats, but thats where it ends.

First of all, this thing does not track well at all. It keeps veering to the left. Pretty unstable too. Lastly, the self bailing scuppers are terrible. I went out over the weekend and my cheeks were soaking wet within the first noine minutes. Good luck finding scupper plugs that fit this thing.

Word of advice. If you are thinking about buying this kayak because of the price, save your money and hit em' with the hein with something better.

Good for beginer or float friendly waters

I bought two of these for my 14 and 11 year sons for $200 each from Home Depot, yes Home Depot. I will admit right off the slow speed tracking sucks but they handle like a go cart on the water. The youngest turns his on a dime and negotiates obstacles with ease on flat water, we have not tried any harder currents yet. I wish I would have bought a Journey 12 for the older boy, but he can live with this for a while since he is not as into it as me and youngest. We have built a skeg or sorts for his which made the boat go straight as an arrow but made it hard to turn, we are still working on a final design.

I am 47, 6'1" and 250lbs, I found the boats to be wobbly but they have great secondary stability and you have to work to flip. None of the dry storage is exactly watertight but with some silicone and thought about what you put in them they are pretty good. They are great platforms for modifications like anchor trolleys, LEDS and other accessories.

Nice boat and review. I've been looking at yaks myself here lately. I like my pontoon for most of my fishing but the wife wants to get out and do some paddling so I'm thinking about purchasing a couple of cheaper kayaks for us to play around with. That one you chose looks to be just about what I'm looking for!

sun dolphin journey 10 ss scupper plugs

Thanks. It suits me fine for now. There are a lot out there with good prices. I'm sure you'll do some research. Good luck.

I have the same kayak on the way. I like your review. There are some great Youtube videos that show other ways to improve the kayak such as sealing up all the things with screws to keep water from getting into the hull unnecessarily. I also plan to make a DIY outrigger for it.

Rod, I'm glad you liked my review. Good luck with your Yak. I have friends who troll for trout from a small boat but never heard of anyone doing so in a kayak. Should be interesting.

Terribly tippy kayak, read other reviews, flawed hull design.

After using it many times i needn't read other reviews. If you have read my other review on this kayak you will notice i used this in Lake Erie bays against boat wakes, windy ponds, rivers and creeks. Though i can't say I've tried other brand kayaks, this one serves me well and i haven't had problems with tipsy. It may not track that well but i figure it's cause of the shorter length but that doesn't bother me. Thanks for your input though.

Hello...where can I find scrubber plugs?,ordered xs for kayak&they are way to big...any ideas?...thanks a bunch....many blessings

I got my scupper plugs at Dunhams Sports. Some people i know just use a cork. if you do use a cork, drill and hole through the center and pull a string through it with a knot underneath. this was you can pull the scupper plugs out when you want.

Question about the rear compartment.. I'm purchasing a used model of this same Yak. Do you think it's modifiable to mount a portable aerator to and floats to make this into a live well for bait fish? (the floats to make it floatable while being towed behind)

The rear removable compartment is about 4" deep and around 21" long. You can pull the compartment by the handle which shouldn't be much of a problem in lakes and ponds. I would put some kind of floats on each side though, similar to the foam noodles for swimming pools. I don't see why this shouldn't work well for live bait. The aerator should be able to sit on the compartment with no problem, maybe using Velcro to keep it from moving.

Hello, Concerning scupper plugs, Sundolphin has them but for some reason don't include them with Kayak. I contacted customer service on their website and they sent me plugs free of charge.

That's pretty cool that they did that. I bought mine.

Scupper plugs now come with the kayak, but from what I read, they're pretty much useless as they tend to pop out from water pressure from below. I plan to make a couple using foam golf balls.

Terrible. Hull takes on water. All watertight compartments leak. Trying to figure way to keep water out of hull.

I sealed the rod holder cups and and bungee cord clips with sealer beforehand. The only thing that kept water was the round compartment right in front of the seat. I've used this kayak many times since this post and have never had any water in the hull. To keep water off of the deck I use Scupper plugs. If you get water inside the hull i would suspect a leak somewhere.

Just bought a Journey 10SS at Tractor Supply on Black Friday for $179. Great deal!! Won't get to use it until next spring, but I've got all winter to seal up the various screw holes and make some scupper plugs out of foam golf balls. The latest model has a redesigned hull that features two skegs that are molded in as part of the hull. That should eliminate any tracking issues. The various compartments, including those with gasketed covers, now have "not waterproof" molded into them which points to the need to seal them with silicone caulk or something similar if you want to stay dry!

Last summer I seen a guy who had one of the new models. He commented that he felt it was tipsy but he was a big guy. I was wondering if those skegs will scrape a lot in the shallows? I also believe that there were no scupper holes in front of the foot rests. Not sure if that's a plus or minus.

I one I bought on Black Friday has only the two scupper holes under the seat. They eliminated the ones in the front. From what I've read online, the new model is a lot more stable than the earlier ones. The skegs are not that high - maybe an inch and a half high tapering up to 2 inches or so and about 2 inches wide. They're about 10 inches long but way in the back. It doesn't look like they'd be any problem in shallow water. If they scrape the bottom then I suspect other parts of the hull will be scraping too.

Bottom Line:

The Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is one of the best budget sit-on-top kayaks of 2024 and fares well as a simple fishing kayak good for short trips, reviewers agree. However, it’s let down by a lack of reliable tracking and speed. That said, experts tend to agree you likely won’t need those attributes from this kind of vessel!

This boat arrives with tons of storage options and is very easy to lift, move and store. Experts agree that the price point is likely the biggest selling point, though you may need to get creative with the scupper holes!

Comparison to Similar Kayaks:

  • Very lightweight and easy to move
  • Adjustable seat and rests are easy to manage
  • Durably polyethylene construction
  • Stacks of storage options
  • A great budget choice
  • Tracks very poorly
  • Slow on most waters
  • Doesn't perform well in bad weather

Performance of the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS

Experts agree that the Journey 10 SS is a cheap and cheerful kayak that “gives you what you pay for.” They say it’s a nice fishing kayak for light fishing trips or recreational paddling. It doesn’t achieve bracing speeds, and reviewers agree that its tracking is fairly poor, even on flat water.

However, it does pick up praise for its multiple storage options, such as flush mount rod holders, shock cord deck rigging, a portable accessory carrier, and tackle holders. There’s a paddle holder too to free your hands for fishing. That said, reviewers note that the boat’s relatively low max capacity means you may not be able to make complete use of them.

This kayak also scores fairly well on durability. Its hard plastic shell, experts claim, gives it more than enough resistance against spikier adventures.

However, reviewers also note that users may wish to plug the scupper holes on their own accord, as they’re not always reliable. One expert even used third party ear plugs to fill the gaps!

Comfort-wise, experts feel the lack of a padded seat is notable, but the flexible and slight-padded back rest does offer some relief. It also has adjustable foot braces. There are foot and thigh pads onboard, but reviewers query whether or not this is a great option for shorter riders (e.g. under six feet tall).

The general consensus otherwise is that it’s a fantastically affordable boat, but you might not expect “kayak of the year” features out of it.

Overall Rating

I'm fairly mixed on the Journey 10 SS. It's great for beginners who want to get to grips with tighter paddling from the get-go, but it really isn't the best at tracking. It's also pretty light on capacity. That said, I find it's a reasonable enough boat for day trips and light kayak fishing here and there.

Creating A Simpler Life Off Grid

Despite the fact this kayak is definitely not going to win any races (and its tracking is fairly poor), it's great for gentle adventures and is reasonably supportive. For the money, it's a great value kayak that doesn't try to compete beyond its station.

Monkey N Around

This is a seriously cheap kayak option that I think makes for a good introduction to fishing kayaks in general. I'd consider this a good purchase if you're in the market for an inexpensive kayak first and foremost, but it really doesn't track well when fishing on the flat.

Overview of the SunDolphin Journey 10 SS Fishing Kayak

Well, it’s the 19th of February and it’s going to be 70 degrees today, so I figured I’d take the new Sun Dolphin Journey kayak out. Test it out and see how well it does. My other kayaks are sit-in kayaks, this is my first sit on top, so going to see how it does. Haven’t had it out yet.

Several kind of cool features to this one. This one, of course, has the dry box container in here, which you can open up here. The cool thing about this one is, this actually comes out and you could do as a pull behind, behind the kayak and it floats, so you can tie it off.

Then it opens that whole compartment there. You have the two fish holders. You notice the holes for drainage. This one has a little dry compartment here, which is kind of cool. It does state, though, it’s not completely dry. So what I’ll probably do is take these screws out and I’ll put some kind of marine sealant around there to make it completely dry.

Drink holder, you have a rod holder here, which I have a attachment in the back. That will fit in there and you can hold your rods. Another water bottle containment. You have your foot rest here, which you can move. Have your drain plug here. So pretty cool. This here, you have storage here.

So we’re going to take it out and see.

Okay, so I took the Journey 10 SS kayak out for about three hours. My overall impression of it is really good. I really, really liked it. I researched this thing online, it did get some pretty bad reviews, it also got some really good reviews. So I wasn’t really sure what to think about it.

The stability of it was really, really good. I did like the openness of it. Where my sitting kayaks, I was kind of limited on my movements inside the kayak. But the stability was awesome, I really liked how sturdy it was. I didn’t think it would glide through the water as well as my other kayaks, because they kind of have a V bottom, V bottom to them, this is more flat. But it tread in the water really, really good. It did want to steer a little bit to the left when I was in the water, but it wasn’t hard to handle at all.

The rod holders, here in the front, was really nice, I really liked it. This compartment here, I told you it was … They said that it’s not waterproof, you can tell. It’s almost like a live well. There’s so much water in it. The thing about this one, though, is my butt got extremely wet. You can see all the water.

It is the middle of February, it’s about 65 degrees. Even though it was pretty nice today, it did get a little chili. So I think I’m going to get some of those scupper plugs, I think that’s what they call them. You can get … you can plug up these holes. In the summer time, it wouldn’t be bad. It would actually keep pretty cool. But I think I’m going to get some of those plugs. Especially for the spring.

With the stability, it was a little bit more stable, so it was easier to get to my packs back here, which was kind of nice. What else about it?

I did like the storage compartments here on the side. It was really nice. So like I said, overall, I thought it was a … It’s really a great kayak for the price of it. I would highly recommend it. Like I said, I got this kayak on sale , I had some coupons. I got it at Walmart.

For a beginning kayaker, I would probably give this thing 8 out of 10. Like I said, I really, really like it.

All right. What we have here is the SunDolphin Journey SS . This is a 10-foot Sit-On top kayak . I purchased this one at Walmart. I’m just going to go over a few features with it here, and then we’ll post another video about the modifications I’m going to make to it to kind of customize it.

First off, we’ll start off up here in the front. You have a carry handle. That’s what this is. Drain plug in the front. Some bungee tie-downs for storage. A good place for sticking a life jacket. As you can see, you got adjustable foot pegs on each side. Here in the middle you got a water bottle holder, a swivel mount rod holder that comes with it.

Another little compartment right here for just putting whatever you want, maybe a drink. Who knows? You can carry two of them if you want. You got padded knee grips on the side. Pretty thick and heavy rubberized stuff for putting gear behind. It doesn’t come out real easy. There’s one of those on each side.

Here in the middle you have a storage container. Right now I just have some regular stuff in there, but that’ll be one of the mods we make is waterproofing it because no matter what they tell you, this is not 100% watertight. Adjustable straps on the seat back. You got scupper holes in it. It’s self-bailing kayak. We got some scupper plugs to put in there.

Each side has a holder. I got mine for a amazing deal. I got it for $225 at Walmart ( Check price on Amazon here ) because it’s missing the one bungee cord, which I can cut the ends off of an actual bungee cord, run it through those holes and fix it for about 25 cents, so I wasn’t going to pass that deal up.

You have two, one right there, one right there, built-in rod holders. Another storage thing back here. More bungee straps holding it down. This one, take and put the lid back on it and get it out of the way here. Tighten it down. If you want, this one actually comes out and can be used as a tow-behind. Now this one is completely enclosed. It is watertight. The only thing you might do is actually watertight that lid opening. It has a carry handle. Just goes behind it like such.

You’ve got to forgive the camera work, but you can run that handle through there and use it as a tow-behind to carry whatever gear and then you got another big storage area right there.

And then, of course, there’s another drain plug here in the back. You’ve got a lot of options. You can put stuff in here, use those bungee straps to hold it down. All in all, you’ve got three rod holders, two closed storage compartments, knee pads. I’ll show you over here. It did come with this paddle. It just holds it right onto the side there. No big deal. And like I said, we’re going to do some modifications to it. Nothing major, just very minor, just to kind of personalize it. Stickers, of course, and we’ll post that in another video.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

  • Posted on April 14, 2018 July 26, 2018

sun dolphin journey 10 ss scupper plugs

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss scupper plugs

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss scupper plugs

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss scupper plugs

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss scupper plugs

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

sun dolphin journey 10 ss scupper plugs

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
