Visit Zurich Zoo: Discover The World’s Animals At Home

Zurich Zoo Rhinos

Zurich Zoo has been welcoming guests and families to explore the world of animals for over 90 years. It is, in fact, the third oldest zoo in Switzerland , and is located close to the city center.

Although it started small, the Zurich Zoo now houses 4000 animals that cover approximately 380 different species. Yes, it is an impressive zoo and big as well!

Zurich Zoo Elephants

The zoo has also been expanding recently with not only the famous Masoala Rainforest, a treat to explore a real-life rainforest inside the zoo, but also other new habitats like the Australian animal section, and the huge new Lewa Savannah featuring all the usual suspects from Africa such as lions, giraffes, rhinoceros, zebras, and other mammals.

Animal lovers will be amazed at the range of unique species you can see at the Zurich Zoo. I have wandered around there with my godchild on a number of visits and you can get lost it is so big! Not only that but you often try to see too much and end up miles away from where you started. So, be careful!

The Masoala Rainforest is one of the highlights when you visit Zurich Zoon. It is a huge greenhouse of sorts that was opened in 2003 as part of the zoo’s new conservation efforts.

Every time you enter the Masoala Rainforest you can always find something new to see, from the huge range of tropical plants and trees to the mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. There are quite some unique species inside such as the red ruffed lemur, Rodrigues fruit bat, Madagascar tomato frog, and many many more.

In 2013, this popular zoo exhibit was added with a new treetop walkway to elevate visitors above everything else to give you an even more unique perspective.

Address: Zürichbergstrasse 221, 8044 Zürich, Switzerland ( Google Maps )

Opening Times: November – February 9 am to 5 pm, March – October 9 am to 6 pm

Getting There

The Zurich Zoo is quite easy to reach from downtown Zurich. And because it is not in the center of town, there is adequate parking.

By Public Transport

Zurich Zoo Tram Stop

The easiest way to get to the zoo is direct with Tram 6 from Zurich HB or Central to the Zoo tram stop. So, if you come by train, you can change there, or at Stadelhofen.

Once you arrive at the Zurich Zoo tram stop, it is a five-minute walk from there. Just follow the signs from there, which are marked both on signs, sign posts and along the ground.

Foot steps to mark the way to Zurich Zoo from the tram stop

There are also other options such as:

  • From Bellevue/Stadelhofen – Tram 5 to Kirche Fluntern, then Tram 6 to Zoo
  • From Stettbach – Bus 651 to Zoo/Forrenweid
  • Take the Dolderbahn to the final station then a 20-minute walk

You can drive directly to the Zoo as it is outside of Zurich, although keep in mind that there is not much parking so get there early on weekends and in summer. In such cases, you are better off with public transport

Parking options include:

  • Parkplatz Zoo
  • Parkplatz Sportanlage

Zurich Zoo Map

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

The Zurich zoo is huge, and it always pays to have a map of the zoo handy. Here is a quick overview of the Zurich Zoo map. Just click on it to go to the enlarged and current version .

Zurich Zoo In Winter

Zurich Zoo in winter

There are quite a few benefits to visiting the Zurich Zoo in winter. First, the ticket prices are reduced a little. But the most important benefit is that it is quieter than in the summertime, which is the peak period at the zoo.

Of course, some animals hibernate in winter, so there are certain species you won’t see. And perhaps the zoo is also taking time to do some maintenance at this time.

However, the majority of animals are available and the zoo is open 365 days a year!

Zurich Zoo Experiences

Zurich Zoo is never boring and to keep the excitement going they offer a huge range of classes, courses, tours, and unique events to the public. Such things as spending the night in the zoo, to experience the many animals that thrive at night. Another event they had was a slam poetry event, as well as courses on photography, including with your iPhone.

Just head over to their experiences page and take a look at what is on offer right now.

Zurich Zoo Cafe & Shop

Zurich Zoocafe

There is also a cafe ( Zoocafe ) and onsite at the Zurich Zoo right by the entrance. So, if after your long tour of the zoo, you need a decent meal, they are more than happy to provide it.

There are also a variety of other food and drinks stalls throughout the zoo, as well as a large restaurant by the Masoala Rainforest, and one by the Pantanal exhibit. So is very helpful, especially if you have kids, given how large the zoo is.

Is Zurich Zoo Worth Visiting?

The Zurich Zoo is definitely worth visiting if you or your children love seeing animals up close and personal. As the zoo has such a wide range of habitats and enclosures, it is always a pleasure to explore.

Are there pandas at Zurich zoo?

The Zurich Zoo has some red pandas in the Himalayas exhibit, but no giant pandas from China.

Is there an aquarium in Zurich?

Yes, there is an aquarium at Zurich Zoo. It was completely renovated in 2016 to expand the pools and includes habitats such as a coral reef and tidal pool. There is also a popular penguin enclosure with King penguins in summer and Humboldt penguins in winter.

Zurich Zoo Aquarium

Is Zurich Zoo included in Swiss Travel Pass?

There is no discount for the Zurich Zoo included in the Swiss Travel Pass. However, you can get a 10% discount if you buy the Zurich Card.

How big is Zurich Zoo?

The Zurich Zoo currently covers 27 hectares (67 acres) and includes a wide range of habitats from an aquarium and rainforest to the new Lewa Savannah.

We have spent many happy days at the Zurich zoo has a wide variety of animals and a strong focus on natural habitats for them. There are plenty of indoor exhibits, making it fun to visit in all seasons. They have fantastic playgrounds, so fun that it’s sometimes hard to drag the kids off to see the animals.

As a parent, I like that even though the zoo is big, it’s still very walkable with interactive elements and play areas for restless kids. I grew up in San Diego and their world famous zoo is so large and hilly that you have to take a bus tour to see it all. But at Zurich zoo, you can easily stroll around and see most of it in a day without collapsing from exhaustion.

Getting There

Planning your visit, accessibility, impressions, zoo playgrounds, where to eat at zoo zürich, don’t forget to pin this for later….

Zoo Zürich is located on the west side of Zürich city, easily accessible by tram or car.

By tram: From the Zürich main station, take tram 6 to the Zoo tram stop . The zoo entrance is about 400 m east of the tram stop. On Sundays, tram 5 from Bahnhof Enge also goes to the zoo, but check the schedule first.

If you are coming by public transportation, make sure to check for SBB Railaway offers that typically give a discount on both the travel and zoo tix. Through 15 March 2020, they are offering at 30% discount .

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

By car: Drive to Zürichbergstrasse 219, 8044 Zürich . There is lots of metered parking as shown on the map below (coins only, CHF 12 for 6 hours). On weekends and holidays, it’s best to get to the zoo by 9:00 to make sure you get a parking spot. On busy weekends, there is overflow parking near the Dolder ice rink and a bus shuttle to the zoo. In this case, there will be detour signs directing you to the open lots. More info about getting to the zoo on the Zoo Zürich website .

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

Parking map from Zoo Zürich website .

In 2023, tickets cost 26 CHF/adult, 13 CHF/child 6-16, children under 6 free. Family ticket for 2 adults, 2 children – CHF 71. These are the online ticket price. Tickets are slightly more expensive if you buy them in person.

They regularly offer discounts through their partners like Zürich Card, SBB Railaway, and Migros. See those offers here .

If you go more than three times a year, it’s worth it to buy a season pass. Before my kids were school age, I always had a season pass and went almost every week. With the pass, we could spend just an hour or two, visiting a couple of our favorites and playing on the playground. Then back home for a nap. No pressure to see every animal every time we went. I miss those days.

The main part of the zoo is rather compact, with the elephant park and Masoala rain forest a little separated from the main area. You can enter and exit the Zoo at the main entrance near the street parking (middle left) or at the Masoala Rain Forest (bottom left). Here is a map of the zoo. Click to access the full map on the zoo website .

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

There’s no right way to visit the zoo, but here are some tips based on our experience.

Go early. I like to get to the zoo right when it opens before the crowds fill up the park. If your kids aren’t in school, definitely take advantage of the quiet weekday mornings, when toddlers rule the park.

Bring a picnic. There are so many outdoor and indoor picnic areas, many by playgrounds.

Go on rainy, cold days too. The zoo is a good option in bad weather because there are lots of indoor exhibits where you can stay dry and warm and still have a good time. The obvious choices are the aquarium (fish, penguins, reptiles, amphibians, birds), the gorilla/monkey house and the Masoala rain forest. You could spend several hours just in these areas. The zoo offers lots of private tours (some in English) and special events. In September, Zürich has the Late Night at the Museums event , which includes the Zoo Zürich.

Plan a path that avoids the playgrounds, at first. We love the playgrounds at the zoo! But my kids love them so much that it can be difficult to convince them to see the animals. So I follow path that has us seeing a lot of animals until lunch time, then we settle into the playground for another couple hours before seeing more animals. If you enter through the main entrance, be sure to turn right. If you walk straight, the kids will definitely run into the playground before you see even one animal.

The zoo is stroller accessible and always has alternate routes when you encounter stairs. The zoo is getting so big, they’ve added a little bus train that transports you from the main entrance, to the elephant habitat, to the Masoala rain forest and back. It costs 2.- per person per ride. Under 6 ride free. There is a big booth at the back for wheelchairs and strollers. It runs about every 40 minutes.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

Here are a few of our favorite things at Zoo Zürich. Since they are constantly building and improving, it’s possible there will be new exhibits open that I haven’t yet mentioned here. The new giraffe exhibit opens 9 April 2020. I’ll try to keep this post updated as much as possible.

The new elephant habitat certainly lives up to the hype, with much more room for the herd to roam.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

The facilities are beautiful, with plenty of viewing areas inside and out, even underwater. My only disappointment was that the presentation by zoo staff was done in Swiss German. I was expecting at least High German, which would be understood by a wider variety of people.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

There are picnic tables next to the indoor elephant viewing area – so thoughtful! I used to have to sit uncomfortably on stairs while my kids watched the elephants getting washed.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

My kids have spent many happy hours in the gorilla house, staring face to face with the gorillas through the glass. I love going when the babies are born. So sweet! The enclosure is old skool, small and a little sad. But happily, Zurich Zoo is building a new modern habitat for the primates, scheduled to open in 2020.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

The tigers are usually sleepy but sometimes they walk right up to the glass and growl. The kids are scared but love it too.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

From October to March, the zoo does a Penguin Parade in the afternoons when it’s cold enough, under 10C. This is definitely a fun event.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

My kids always enjoy the animal feedings as well, particularly the penguins and seals. You can see the schedule here . They also do camel and pony rides in the afternoons, around 13:30 last time we were there.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

The Masoala rain forest is an enclosure, hot (29 C) and humid forest, where animals roam free. You have to be a little patient to see the animals. But it’s fun when they suddenly jump onto a tree right next to you.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

There are stairs to an overlook platform above the trees (no elevator, leave strollers below), well worth the climb.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

I’ve saved the best for last: the playgrounds. When I had the year pass, a few times we just played and didn’t see any animals. Oh well, the point was for my kids to have a good time, so mission accomplished.

They like best the playground near the Masoala rain forest, with its slides, climbing structures and sand and water play. We usually have our picnic here.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

They also love the playground below the lion enclosure, with the climbing wall and zip line. The new playground near the main entrance is a climbing paradise. My kids race around the obstacle course, trying to beat each other’s time. There are several other small play areas scattered around the zoo.

swiss travel pass zurich zoo

There are food stands and cafes scattered throughout the zoo and the prices are typical Swiss prices. If I don’t bring a picnic, we typically eat at the Pantanal self-serve restaurant, which is adjacent to the big playground near the main entrance. They’ve redone the inside, so it has a nice cosy atmosphere. For a special experience, our friend Kate at Mom in Zurich likes the Sunday brunch at the elephant habitat .

Where to buy the Swiss Travel Pass

Let’s get started by taking a look at where you should buy your pass.

First, you need to decide whether to purchase a regular Swiss Travel Pass (for travel on consecutive days) or a Swiss Travel Pass Flex. The differences are explained in > this article.

Then it’s super simple to purchase a Swiss Travel Pass. I recommend you buy the pass via GetYour Guide , an authorised reseller of Swiss Travel System.

What’s great about using GetYourGuide is that they offer full refunds on many products, including the Swiss Travel Pass, if you cancel up to 24 hours before use.

How to buy your Swiss Travel Pass step-by-step

The GetYourGuide site is also really user-friendly. After clicking the link to purchase your pass ( this link for the consecutive day pass and this link for the Flex pass ), the first step is to choose how many adults, youths (aged 16 to 25) and children (aged 6 to 15) are travelling.

This can be done directly beneath ‘About this activity’. Kids aged 5 or under don’t need a ticket or a pass, as they travel for free.

Example of a Swiss Travel Pass in PDF format.

I highly recommend printing a paper copy of this as a back-up, though you can simply present the mobile version when using transport in Switzerland.

While both paper and digital versions of the pass are accepted, your phone could suddenly run out of battery and then you’d have no way of proving you have a pass!

You should also carry your passport or another form of photo ID each time you travel.

How you’ll get your Swiss Travel Pass Flex

If you purchase a Swiss Travel Pass Flex, you will receive a purchase receipt and a voucher by email.

The voucher is NOT valid for travel.

Each day you wish you travel you should activate your pass (see the instructions below). By doing this, you will receive a valid ticket for travel on that date.

When and how to activate the Swiss Travel Pass

There is often confusion about whether or not a Swiss Travel Pass has to be activated. The answer varies according to the type of pass you’ve bought so follow the instructions below to learn how to activate your Swiss Travel Pass.

Activating your Swiss Travel Pass (consecutive days)

The regular, consecutive days Swiss Travel Pass does not need to be activated. All you need to do is show it to the ticket inspector when requested.

Activating your Swiss Travel Pass Flex

The Swiss Travel Pass Flex, however, must be activated in advance and before each day that you use the pass. You can do this via Activate Your Pass here .

Screenshot of ActiveMyPass website

Your pass should be activated before your first trip, and you’ll need to enter your reference number as well as your full name and date of birth.

For every travel date you activate, a valid ticket will be generated. This e-ticket can then be seen at activateyourpass.com . You can show this e-ticket to the ticket inspector on your phone or tablet, or use a printed copy.

What if your plans change along the way?

If you have already activated a travel date that you want to change, the Swiss Travel Pass allows you to change these as much as you want to until the start of each validity period.

The validity period commences at 23:59. Once the clock hits midnight, you can no longer change or deactivate this particular ticket.

For example, if you have activated your Swiss Travel Pass Flex to be used on 17 July and you no longer wish to use your pass that day, you can change the date of travel until 23:59 on 16 July.

How to use the Swiss Travel Pass

So now let’s cover how to use the Swiss Travel Pass Flex or consecutive-days pass.

When travelling with a Swiss Travel Pass – either consecutive days or Flex, you simply board the train and sit wherever you wish in the correct carriage for your class of travel.

The only exception to this is when travelling on the Bernina Express or Glacier Express, which we cover below.

When requested by the ticket inspector, simply present your Swiss Travel Pass.  You may also be asked to present some photo ID, such as your passport to verify that you are the pass holder.

Beautiful view from train window in Switzerland

Using the Swiss Travel Pass on panoramic trains

The Bernina Express and Glacier Express , two of Switzerland’s most famous premium panoramic trains, are the only Swiss trains on which reserving a seat is compulsory.

The actual ticket price of the journey on these trains is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass but seat reservation fees are compulsory and should be purchased online well in advance of your travel date.

Seat reservations for the Bernina Express can be purchased here and Glacier Express seat reservations can be purchased here .

On all other panoramic trains* – Luzern – Interlaken Express, GoldenPass Line and Gotthard Panorama Express – seat reservations are not required. Simply board the train and sit anywhere in the correct carriage for your class of your travel.

*Note that the Gotthard Panorama Express only offers 1st class train travel. If you hold a 2nd class Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Travel Pass Flex you must pay a class upgrade for this journey.

Additionally there is a compulsory supplement of CHF 16 for each passenger that travels on the Gotthard Panorama Express. > Purchase class upgrades and the compulsory supplement here .

Using the Swiss Travel Pass on buses, boats and mountain transport

Don’t forget that Swiss Travel Pass holders can also use boats, buses and some mountain transport services. Even when this isn’t the case, you may qualify for a generous discount as a pass holder.

When boarding boats and buses, simply show your Swiss Travel Pass when you enter.  For free (where applicable) or discounted travel on cable cars, funiculars and mountain railways, present your pass at the ticket counter.

Selected museums also allow pass holders to enter for free. Just show your Pass at the ticket counter.

Travelling beyond the Swiss border with a Swiss Travel Pass

When travelling to an area beyond that covered by the pass – such as into another country – you’ll need to buy a ticket for that sector. This will apply, for example, to journeys into France, Italy, Germany or Austria.

International tickets are generally not available for purchase on the Swiss Railways website or app so we recommend buying them from the railway of the country concerned.

The Swiss Travel Pass covers travel as far as the major rail border points of Basel and Le Chatelard-Frontiere on the French border, Chiasso on the Italian border, Konstanz on the border with Germany and St. Margrethen on the Austrian border.

Some postal bus services within Liechtenstein and Austria are also covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

You can view a map of the Area of Validity of the Swiss Travel Pass > here .

The SwissPass app

Is there a Swiss Travel Pass app? No, there isn’t.

Many travellers notice a reference to the SwissPass on the SBB Mobile app however this refers to a digital travel account for residents only.

A SwissPass account is for Swiss citizens only, not tourists, and is a separate product that uses a chip and pin card.

The Swiss Travel Pass doesn’t have to be added to an app. All you need is to be able to show the ticket inspector a paper or digital copy, and photo ID if requested.

The excellent SBB Mobile app ( which we explain here ) can be used for checking timetables but it is not necessary (or possible) to connect your Swiss Travel Pass to the app.

Another app that is useful is the Swiss Travel Guide app which has an integrated map and timetable and points out more than 500 Swiss highlights.

Buying, activating and using the Swiss Travel Pass summary

The Swiss Travel Pass allows you to use the clean, fast and efficient public transport system in Switzerland. It can be used on trams, buses and boats as well as trains, and can save you a lot of time and money. Exclusive free entry to museums and generous discounts can also apply.

Buying your pass is easy, and purchasing it through our preferred supplier means you won’t even lose money if your plans change, as long as you cancel 24 hours before the start date.

Only the Swiss Travel Pass Flex requires activation, which is easy to do via this link .

Once you have your chosen pass, I recommend taking a paper copy as well as the digital version as back-up. Also carry your passport or other photo ID in case it’s requested.

Unless you want to travel on the popular scenic Swiss train routes, seat reservations are not normally required.

Wherever your Swiss Travel Pass takes you, I’m sure you’ll fall in love with beautiful Switzerland and will want to return time and time again!

10 Things to do in Zurich, Switzerland by Swiss Experts

Very often travelers to Switzerland skip to explore Zurich and use it only to arrive or depart from the country. Unfortunately, these travelers have no idea of what they are missing, since they don't take the efforts to experience things to do in Zurich.

Zurich is far from the just the commercial and financial hub that it is made out to be. One can easily spend a few nights exploring the town and its surroundings and still be left wanting for more.

To help you make up your mind on spending time in this city, here are the Top 10 things that you can do on your next visit to Zurich.

1. Altstadt (The Old Town)

altstadt-old-town-zurich

Spanning both banks of the Limmat is the medieval historic Old Town of Zurich. Hidden in the meandering cobblestone streets, you will find quaint one-of-a-kind stores, restaurants and family run businesses. Alongside this, are some of the jewels of the citys architectural and religious landmarks. The area houses 4 medieval churches including the famed Grossmunster and Fraumuster and Zurich's 17th century Town Hall.

Don't be deceived by all the culture and religion that you see around here. Come sundown, the Old Town is alive and throbbing with nightclubs. In fact, this part of town has the highest concentration of nightclubs where you can relax with your favourite tipple after a day in town.

2. Swiss National Museum

swiss-national-museum

Swiss National Museum looks more like a fairy tale castle than a museum. It houses Switzerland's largest collection of historical and cultural artefacts which will give you an insight into the country's past.

Marvel at the different eras of history that are masterfully represented. From prehistoric pottery and tools, Medieval Gothic art and wood carvings from the Renaissance period there is an amazing number of captivating exhibits. You can rent an audio guide or even download one on the museums app. Usually, visiting museum is popular thing to do in Zurich in one day.

Moreover, Swiss Travel Pass holders enjoy free entrance at Swiss National Museum, Zurich - just one of the many benefits of Swiss Travel pass .

Remember to visit the souvenir shop to pick up a few exquisite handcrafted souvenirs made by Swiss artisans.

3. Zurich Zoo

zurich-zoo

Nothing fascinates kids more than a trip to the zoo. Visit the Zurich Zoo spread over 27 hectares and home to over 4000 animals representing over 300 species.

The enclosures are among the best that you can hope to find in any zoo. If you are an animal lover demanding that the animals and the attractions must adhere to the highest ethical standards, then this zoo sets the highest standards.

Make sure to spend some time at the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park, where you even have the chance to see the elephants taking a dip thanks to the underwater viewing areas. Walk through the African Savannah, Himalayan heights and South American grasslands, all perfectly created ecosystems to allow the animals to roam freely and fearlessly in the heart of Switzerland.

4. Uetliberg

uetliberg-zurich

Often called Zurich's own little mountain, Uetliberg panoramic point is a must-do thing to do in Zurich on any given day.

Standing 2850 feet above sea level, Uetliberg offers you stunning views of the surrounding lakes, Alps and the city and it is still very easily accessible from the city by train or tram. You can also decide to walk to the peak and back. It is a very gentle climb and will not require any hiking equipment or experience. There is a lookout tower and a restaurant at the top where you can have a nice meal.

Uetliberg is an unmissable attraction that every elated traveller makes it a part of its Switzerland itinerary .

5. A Cruise on the Limmat

cruise-on-limmat-zurich

Get a different perspective of the city from the water. Just walk to the pier in front of the Swiss National Museum and get into one of the boats that depart every half an hour. The cruise will pass by historic guild houses, the Town Hall and the imposing facades of the Grossmunster and the Fraumuster.

6. Walk the Bahnofstrasse

bahnofstrasse-street-zurich-switzerland

The Bahnofstrasse, Zurich's famous shopping street and one of the highest priced real estate in the world, is home to every luxury brand that you can imagine.

Whether you are interested in some retail therapy or just want to window shop, this is one street that you have explore. Other than the luxury brands, there are numerous high street brands, watch shops and restaurants. The street stretches from the main station to the lake and is just 1.4 kms. The street is like a year round attraction, but particularly delightful in December when the Christmas decorations are out.

7. FIFA Museum

fifa-museum-zurich

Since its opening in 2016, the FIFA museum has quickly become one of the must-do attractions of Zurich. Its modern layout and numerous interactive attractions has made it a favourite for football enthusiasts and others alike. The ride takes just under 6 minutes and once on top, gives a lovely view over the surroundings. There are hiking trails, a wave pool and mini golf courses at the top. It is also a winter attraction when it offers ice-skating and ice hockey.

9. Zurich's Munsters

grossmunster-church-zurich

No visit to Zurich is complete without visiting its famous churches.

The Grossmunster: The twin towers of this famous church are one of Zurichs most recognizable landmarks. The church which has been built, rebuilt and renovated several times has stained glass windows, a Romanesque crypt and bronze doors that are all worth seeing. You can even try climbing the 187 steps to the top of one of the towers for a bird's eye-view over the city.

The Fraumunster: Founded in the 9th century this church is particularly noteworthy for its 5 stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. The church is situated on the west bank of the Limmat and can be distinguished by its green steeple.
