Excellent planning and implementation My husband and I planned and recently completed a 5-day private safari with Serengeti African Tours. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the team members once again. Only with professional help it is possible to plan the right length in the different national parks. Our guide Ombeni was unbelievably great, he was there for us the whole day, told us everything we needed to know about the animals and was simply a likeable and nice person with whom we enjoyed spending the 5 days. THANK YOU, Ombeni for an unforgettable safari! Everything was very professional, from the organization to the handling on site and the implementation. We can highly recommend Serengeti African Tours as a tour provider

Serengeti Safari - (PRIVATE TRIP)

After a Kili climb we went on Safari. The arrangements at the lodges and the experience of our guide, Peter, made the trip memorable and unforgettable. We recommend using Oneseed for Safari and letting them take care of all of the plans from a hot air balloon ride to birthday celebration. It was a wonderful experience all the way around. We so treasure the trip and seeing the animals in their natural environment.

Moses as well as out driver Omega were truly wonderful. Friendly outgoing generous with their time. Informative. I can’t say enough. There was a little I’ll will between 2 of the travelors and Moses was exceptionally good at easing the problems and making everyone feel comfortable and happy in spite of them. The accommodations and the staff of the places we stayed were excellent

7 Days Tanzania Classic Safari

I can only highly recommend Steppe Dogs Adventures. From the very beginning they were very professional and efficient. We were in touch via mail and any question I would ask was answered immediately. They also took care of all my suggestions and in the end we had a safari exactly like he hoped to have. My mom and I went on Safari for seven days. We had a very good car which we only shared with our lovely driver/guide/friend Godbless Marick. He was a perfect driver so we felt safe all of the time even though die to the weather it was sometimes quite hard to drive. He also knew everything about animals (especially birds) and nature as well as historical facts about the places. The lodges/ "tents" Steppe Dogs Adventures chose for us where almost more than we had expected. We felt very comfortable and could enjoy these great experiences even better. The food and drinks were also excellent there. In total it was worth every dollar and we can only highly recommend to go with them. Enjoy :)

5 Days Tanzania Enticing Explorations Tour

5 Days Tanzania Enticing Explorations

We were with Steppe Dogs Adventures for 5 days on safari in the Lake Manyara, Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater. Our driver Joseph Mashine was one of the best you can ever find out in the bush. He drove us safely through all muddy waters while others got stuck. And he is a fantastic spotter. We could see with him all big 5 and above all the Serval cat which is a rarity on its own. The whole trip was perfectly organised and they found for us the perfect stays in the tented camps. As the non plus ultra they organised for us a balloon safari with the most experienced balloon pilot Paco. It was the once in a lifetime experience. 2 million wildebeests as far as you can see. Unbelievable. If you really want a safari out of the common tracks Joseph is the man. He managed to be on spots nobody was there. Asante sana Mashine.

Unforgettable! We had a really nice trip, all organised, but also flexible to our wishes. Our guide David gave us interessting facts (we could ask him everything) and our cook Richard always created delicious food - both really friendly, funny and they made sure that we feel well. All sleeping equipment was available and it is a nice experience to sleep in the nature in the tent (although a little bit cold;)). Just recommendable!!

Just got back from exploring Tanzania the past week and had a spectacular time! Our guide Joseph truly was the best. He literally knew everything about everything. Couldn't have asked for a more knowledgeable and kind guide. He knew what we were looking for and did not disappoint. He was the perfect balance of professional and fun that made our trip so special. If you tour with Spider tours and safaris and Joseph is your guide you are automatically set for a great trip!

Best of Tanzania 9days Luxury safari Package

Tanzania Safari Tour Reviews

The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.

Baraza Resort and Spa

Tanzania is located in East Africa and is home to some of Africa’s most pristine wildlife sanctuaries, the second highest mountain in the world - Kilimanjaro, a massive volcanic crater, and gorgeous white sand beaches with warm turquoise waters. The plains of the Serengeti National Park offer an exhilarating safari experience with phenomenal game viewing opportunities which includes the “Great Mammal Migration” and the famous “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), whilst the tropical island of Zanzibar is a marine wonderland with its untouched coral reefs and gorgeous climate. Tanzania has a strong cultural heritage and offers visitors the rare opportunity in northern Tanzania of meeting with the fascinating Maasai people who have a great understanding of how to live in semi-arid and arid lands.

The question of when is the best time to visit Tanzania is best determined by what you wish to experience.

Tanzania has a temperate climate with relatively comfortable temperatures all year round. The main variation to the impact of the temperature is the humidity and annual rains.

Traditionally, the annual rainfall arrives around the beginning of April and continues until the end of June. The second, slightly less strong, rainy period, is from the beginning of November (around 2 weeks later on Zanzibar) to the middle of December, roughly speaking.

Although the Serengeti offers fantastic game viewing all year round, there are particular months that are deemed as the best time to visit the park. The dry season months of June through October are the most popular time of the year for a safari in Tanzania, with animals congregating near water sources and the vegetation thining; improving the visibility of animals. If you aspire to see the annual Mammal Migration , then it is best to travel during the months of June and July . In the months of December to March , the migration herds are located down in the very southern region of the park. April and May is a good time to book a safari in the northern parks of Tanzania, as the game is still good, crowds are minimal, and the prices are at the lowest of the year.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the cool, dry months of spring. Another popular time to visit this tropical island is from December to February when it’s hot and dry. The ocean temperatures are perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling expeditions.

Mount Kilimanjaro is best climbed either between July and October or January to March .

Tanzania is a country located in East Africa and is renowned for its vast wilderness areas.

The plains of the Serengeti National Park offer an exhilarating safari experience with phenomenal game viewing opportunities which includes the “Great Mammal Migration” and the notorious “Big Five” (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), whilst Kilimanjaro National Park is home to Africa’s highest mountain. Offshore lie the tropical islands of Zanzibar, with Arabic influences, and a marine park which is home to whale sharks and beautiful coral reefs.

Also on the coast is the bustling city of Dar es Salaam, where Swahili culture meets a modern tropical metropolis. In the north, Olduvai Gorge is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world; an asset in understanding early human evolution. Olduvai is next to Ngorongoro Crater, a massive volcanic valley that’s a major wildlife conservation and safari area, inhabited by the indigenous Maasai, who still pursue traditional tribal practices. Lake Tanganyika is the location of Jane Goodall’s primate research center, where visitors can track chimpanzees along the shoreline.

Serengeti National Park

Located in northern Tanzania, this World Heritage Site and most celebrated wilderness area known as the Serengeti is a photographer and filmmakers dream, especially during the massive annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. The crocodile infested Grumeti River is a top attraction during this remarkable event; with hungry Nile crocodiles awaiting their opportunity to strike as the herds frantically cross the river. The reserve has an abundance of wildlife with the numbers estimated to be well over 3 million. There is even an active volcano within the Serengeti National Park;  the only volcano to eject carbonatite lavas that turn white when exposed to air.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 miles) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area. The crater is 610 meters (2,000 feet) deep and its floor covers 260 square kilometers (100 square miles). Approximately 25,000 large animals, including the Big 5, live in the crater. The crater also has one of the densest known population of East African lions which are particularly strong in the Ndutu Lake area. It is important to note however that the Ngorongoro Crater does get very busy so we do recommend a two-night stay here.

Tarangire National Park

Often regarded as Tanzania’s most underrated national park, Tarangire is a must on a northern circuit itinerary. It is Africa’s best-kept secret, boasting a variety of wildlife and diverse landscapes. The name originates from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The river is the primary source of freshwater for wild animals in the Tarangire ecosystem during the annual dry season (July to October). Visitors to the park in the dry season can expect to see large herds of thousands of zebra, wildebeest and cape buffalo. Tarangire is notorious for its large elephant population - the largest in Tanzania. During the dry season, herds of up to 300 elephants can be seen digging in the dry riverbed of the Tarangire River looking for underground streams.

Boasting some of the finest tropical beaches in Africa, as well as world-class scuba-diving sites, we rate Zanzibar as an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blissful, barefoot-luxury holiday. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, exploring the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or enjoying the many water sports on offer, this island has something for every traveler.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a smaller park located both in Arusha Region and Manyara Region of Tanzania. The park is strikingly diverse with barren lands, forest, and a salt lake. Lake Manyara National Park is renowned for the flamingos that inhabit the lake. During the wet season, they can be found at the edges of the lake in flocks of thousands but they are not so present during the dry season. More than 400 species of birds inhabit the park making this the ideal location for bird watching. Leopards, East African lions, cheetahs, elephants, hippopotami, several antelope and many more wild animals inhabit this park and many can be seen throughout the year.

Located below Mount Meru in northern Tanzania, the charming city of Arusha is a gateway to the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara National Park, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Arusha National Park on Mount Meru. As it rests at the base of the twin peaks, Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, the city serves as an ideal base for hikers eager to conquer Africa’s highest mountain. Arusha is known for its vibrant nightlife, Masai Market, National Natural History Museum, and traditional Tanzanian cuisine.

Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa and second highest in Tanzania, standing at 4 566 meters. The dormant stratovolcano is located 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro and is often considered by hikers as a warm-up trek for Kilimanjaro. The fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, including nearly 400 species of birds, as well as monkeys, giraffe, bushbuck and leopards.

Kilimanjaro National Park

Kilimanjaro National Park covers an area of 186 749 acres, protecting the largest free-standing volcanic mass in the world and the highest mountain in Africa, with its peak at 5 895 meters. The mountain is encircled by mountain forest. Numerous mammals, many of them endangered species, live in the park. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a lifelong dream for many, with an estimated 25 000 people attempting the climb each year. In the lower-lying areas such as the forest zone there are a multitude of birds, blue monkeys, colobus monkeys and olive baboons. Civets, leopards, mongooses, elephants and Abbott’s duikers also live in the mountain’s forest, but sightings are extremely rare. The alpine and arctic zones are too harsh for any animals to survive comfortably.

Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam, meaning “haven of peace” is Tanzania’s largest and busiest port city.

Loved amongst travelers for its seaside setting and eclectic vibe, Dar es Salaam bustles with fish markets, dhow boats, museums and striking architecture. Dar es Salaam is a diverse city with a mix of African, Arabic, and Indian cultures. Popular day trips include the beautiful Mbudya Island where you can bask on the island's white-sand beaches, snorkel, and swim in the turquoise waters. Bongoyo Island is a much-loved island getaway, lying off the Msasani Peninsula, about four miles north of the city. Located about six kilometers north of the city on the Msasani Peninsula, is the popular Coco Beach, where you can savor street food and listen to live music. The Oyster Bay Shopping Center here is a popular attraction, with farmers markets, art galleries, and boutique shops.

Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake and the second oldest freshwater lake in the world. Lake Tanganyika is home to Nile crocodiles, various turtle species, the Storms water cobra, and more than 80 species of non-cichlid fish of which about 60% of these are endemic. Most visitors choose to base themselves in the lovely lakeside town of Kigoma which serves as a gateway to the two rainforest reserves bordering the lake: Mahale Mountains National Park and Gombe Stream National Park, both of which offer unforgettable up-close chimpanzee encounters and an astonishing variety of birdlife.

Anja is awesome!
Anja is awesome!! She went above and beyond for me as I had several changes until I locked in my bucket list itinerary and then my friend cancelled. She wasn't mad and just went about cancelling her portion which saved me money in the long run. Anja is a true professional regardless and I have been dealing with her since Sept 2023. Cannot wait until my trip in Sept 2024.

Shann was beyond amazing
Shann was beyond amazing. Listened to our needs, communicated super-efficiently and gave really honest excellent advice. She was so patient, kind and professional. The time difference across the globe made no difference. I am so excited for the itinerary she has put together. I usually cobble my own itinerary together for our holidays and it’s so time consuming and hard work. This was a piece of cake! Thank you Shann.
Great planning and service
Great planning and service, and everything worked like clockwork. We booked an Inyari Lodge safari with air with Safari.com. it wasn't clear if there will be 2 or three of us, so with Candis' help we booked a family chalet for 2 and added the third later when it was confirmed he can come. Candis put us on flights that maximized our game drive time (unlike some of the other guests) so we got all 6 drives in 3 nights. The lodge was great. Especially the game drives. We saw more than we hoped for. Additionally, Safari.com's insurance was very competitive. Highly recommended.

Fantastic travel agent for African safari family trip!
Wow! Shann was and is fantastic! She figured out a way to make our entire trip work. We are going on a 2 week trip to South Africa and Botswana. She really helped tie it all together as a wonderful, cohesive trip. She is super nice and super smart and very knowledgeable. She is also flexible and thoughtful, etc., etc. When the chips were down (and we literally were considering pulling the plug on the whole trip), she found a way to make the entire itinerary work and got us excited about our wonderful adventure! Highly recommend!

FAQ’s for Tanzania Safari

For wildlife safaris the best time to travel to Tanzania is from July to October. This is the dry season when viewing opportunities are better due to vegetation dwindling making the bush less dense while animals congregate around water holes to drink. Keep in mind that this is the peak season and Tanzania attracts a lot of visitors from all over the world so it can be busy plus it’s a more expensive time of year. On the other hand, the shoulder season, November to March is a great time to travel too. Although the bush is thicker so it’s harder to see wildlife, this time of year has less visitors and can be more affordable  For more information about the best time to travel to Tanzania, including its’s coastline, check out our Best Time to Visit Tanzania guide .

The great wildebeest migration  in Tanzania and Kenya is the largest annual migration of around 1.5 million wildebeest and thousands of zebras, antelopes, gazelle, impala and eland. The migration is a result of dwindling grazing making the animals move to greener pastures following the rainfall pattern. This large-scale migration is fraught with dangerous river crossings where predators are lying in wait. The migration continues year round as the animals travel in a circular route from Tanzania to Kenya and back again. The rains in April and May get the herds of wildebeest on the move in the Serengeti on their journey towards the Masai Mara, Kenya. Once they have reached Kenya, they graze in the Mara. In a few months, the vegetation is exhausted and the animals start their journey back to the Serengeti, and the cycle repeats.

Check out our Great Migration Timeline  to see how the wildebeest migration progresses over the months.

From the postcard-perfect beaches and large open skies to the majestic animals and spectacular wilderness, Tanzania offers children mesmerising sights and wildlife adventures. Tanzania is a family-friendly safari destination , but before you hop on to the plane, you’ll need to do some research.

There are some safari lodges and camps that have age restrictions for children. When you book a safari tour, discuss this with your tour operator and find out details about the restrictions; it might be a lodge or camp which only accepts children over a certain age, or it could be some of the activities where there are age restrictions such as walking safaris or game drives. Some camps offer children-specific activities for families. In terms of safety, it is quite safe to take your kids on a safari, just ensure that they listen to the guide at all times.

Even though Swahili, a Bantu language, is the official language of Tanzania and majority of the population speak it, not everyone in Tanzania speaks it. They might speak a variation of the Bantu languages as there are quite a few Bantu and Nilotic languages spoken throughout Tanzania. English is the second official language, spoken by a large number of Tanzanians – a remnant of colonial rule (formerly known as the Tanganyika territory).

Although Tanzania’s official currency is Tanzanian Shilling, which is accepted throughout the country, US Dollars are also widely accepted in a majority of tourist areas. However, the locals don’t usually accept US dollar notes printed before 2009. We recommend visitors exchange money at authorised dealers in Tanzania plus there are options to use ATMs to get the local currency. Most of the Tanzanian outlets accept Mastercard and Visa.

To make things a little simpler, we have shared a quick currency conversions (2021):

The majority of visitors travelling to Tanzania require a visa to enter Tanzania. There are certain exceptions to that rule. Visitors can either obtain a visa on arrival or get a visa prior to travel from the Tanzania Consulate in their country of residence. Some visitors (from specific countries) may not require a Tanzanian visa at all. Refer to Tanzania Immigration website for the complete list of visa-exempt countries. You can also refer to the same page for Referral Visa Cases, as it provides a list of countries that can acquire a visa on arrival. There are numerous types of visa, but visitors who want to travel to Tanzania for leisure require a Single Entry or an ordinary Visa. In addition make sure your passport has at least six months validity.

It’s unlikely that you will have to worry about transport once you arrive in Tanzania. Many safari packages include a vehicle with a driver guide who will can take you around Tanzania on your safari. The vehicle included in the package will be your primary mode of transportation together with any charter or scheduled flights to take you to remote game areas or off shore islands such as Zanzibar.

OVERVIEW – 3 DAY TANZANIA SAFARI

Let’s start this guide with all the essentials you should know when planning a 3 day Tanzania safari, from the cost to where to book the tour, and more.

WHERE TO GO FOR A 3 DAY TANZANIA SAFARI?

Many safaris in Tanzania have a specific journey that you’ll follow for 3 days.

However, if you have the option to customize the itinerary, I recommend visiting Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater.

This is what I personally did, and I spent 1 day in each location, with each park providing a unique experience with diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes.

The highlights of my adventure included a walking safari at Arusha National Park, wildlife spotting in Tarangire National Park, and descending into the vast Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive.

HOW MUCH DOES A 3-DAY TANZANIA SAFARI COST?

The cost of a safari will vary depending on your itinerary and choice of tour company, but it’s important to note that Tanzania is generally one of Africa’s pricier safari destinations.

That being said, there are budget-friendly options too.

For those on a tighter budget, you can expect to pay around $150 per person per day. On the other hand, for a more premium experience, you will find safaris for over $1,000 per person per day.

A mid-range option falls somewhere in between at around $300 to $500 per person per day.

WHERE TO BOOK A 3-DAYS TANZANIA SAFARI?

I personally booked a 3-day private safari with Altezza Travel which included Arusha, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire National Park.

Altezza is a premier tour operator who has extensive expertise when it comes to the service and logistics of safari tours within Tanzania’s national parks.

They have an impressive safari fleet of Land Cruisers with a convertible pop-up roof that provides a panoramic 360° view. They’re also equipped with amenities such as a fridge for your refreshments, Wi-Fi access, and power sockets.

And let’s not forget about the wildlife – we saw everything from herds of elephants to a pride of lions and giraffes in abundance.

Each safari is customizable, tailoring the ideal dream tour to align with your specific travel style and comfort preferences.

When it comes to accommodation, you’ll be presented with options that include luxurious stone-built lodges and more authentic tented lodge experiences for a memorable 3 day Tanzania safari.

Special Offer: Altezza extends a 5% discount on all Tanzania Safaris to my readers when you include the code JONNYMELON during your booking inquiry.

3 DAYS TANZANIA SAFARI ITINERARY

Now that you have an overview of what this 3 day safari in Tanzania entails, let’s go further in detail with the itinerary and what to expect each day.

DAY 1: ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

Day one of the three-day safari in Tanzania begins with Arusha National Park.

You’ll start early in the morning and leave from Arusha town to get into the national park, a gem tucked away in northern Tanzania.

I’m talking about lush rainforests, unique wildlife, and the stunning Momella Lakes. Next thing you know, you’re staring up at the rugged peaks of Mount Meru!

The first activity you can do is a 1.5-hour walking safari with a guide and armed ranger around a section of the park.

We spotted countless wildlife such as warthogs, buffaloes, baboons, and giraffes to name a few, then we continued to check out the beautiful Tululusia Waterfall.

After the walking safari, you’ll visit the stunning Momella Lakes filled with pink flamingos, and then stop for lunch at a picnic site overlooking Mount Meru.

The safari continues with a 2-hour game drive through the park and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the black and white colobus monkeys swinging through the treetops.

You might even spot a shy bushbuck as well as herds of buffaloes and giraffes that rule these plains.

Arusha National Park was an exceptional start to the 3 day safari in Tanzania, and I couldn’t have asked for more.

ANIMALS IN ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

Arusha National Park isn’t the most diverse in terms of animal species, but you’ll surely see some unique wildlife.

Here are some common animals you’ll spot;

  • Black and White Colobus Monkeys : Known for their black and white fur, you’ll see the monkeys swinging through the treetops.
  • Bushbucks : These shy, solitary antelopes are known for their beautiful markings and can often be spotted hiding in the underbrush.
  • Pink Flamingos : The Momella Lakes are a haven for these vibrant birds, creating a stunning spectacle as they wade in the shallows.
  • Buffaloes : Traveling in large herds, buffaloes are often roaming around and you’ll love photographing them.
  • Giraffes : With their long necks and distinctive spots, giraffes are a highlight you’ll see, often seen peacefully munching on acacia trees.
  • Zebras : These iconic African animals add a touch of wild beauty to the landscape.
  • Baboons : You definitely won’t miss the baboons on your safari in Arusha.
  • Leopards : Though rare, Arusha National Park is known for occasional leopard sightings.

Remember, every Arusha National Park safari is unique, and nature operates on its own schedule.

You’re 99% guaranteed to spot lots of animals, but keep in mind that no guide can guarantee any sightings.

DAY 1 ACCOMMODATION

In the late afternoon, you’ll be transferred from Arusha to Tarangire National Park for a short game drive through the park while on the way to your accommodation.

Inside the national park, there are half a dozen accommodations available and we personally stayed at the beautiful Ndovu Tented Lodge by Nasikia Camps .

Ndovu Tented Camp offers an enchanting setting to unwind after the day’s adventures and you’ll even be able to spot wildlife right in front of the camp.

DAY 2: TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Day 2 is spent exploring the stunning Tarangire National Park, one of the best places to take a safari in Tanzania.

From the stunning landscapes to the abundance of African wildlife, you’re in for a treat!

Tarangire is known for its large number of diverse wildlife, particularly during the dry season. But the park is mostly known for the elephants.

In fact, Tarangire boasts more African elephants per square kilometer than any other national park in the country!

But that’s not all – keep your camera handy because you’re also likely to spot zebras, gazelles, giraffes, lions, and even cheetahs.

A full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park is exactly what you’d come to Tanzania for!

ANIMALS IN TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Prepare for an exciting encounter with a rich variety of wildlife as you explore Tarangire National Park.

Here are the amazing animals you can expect to see on safari;

  • Elephants : Tarangire is famous for its large elephant herds.
  • Lions : Known as the ‘king of the jungle,’ Tarangire is the right place to spot them in the wild.
  • Fringe-eared Oryxes and Gerenuks : These antelope species add to the park’s diversity.
  • Zebras and Wildebeests : Watch out for these iconic African animals, especially around the Tarangire River during the dry season.
  • Giraffes : With their long necks reaching up into the tree canopy, they’re hard to miss!
  • Hyenas and Leopards : Keep an eye out for these predators lurking in the shadows.
  • Bird Species : With over 550 bird species, you’ll be in heaven if you like bird watching.
  • Warthogs, Waterbucks, Elands, and Gazelles : These smaller mammals also play a significant role in the ecosystem.

Generally speaking, there are many animal species to see in Tarangire and this is exactly why I recommend packing your best camera gear!

DAY 2 ACCOMMODATION

In the late afternoon, you’ll be transferred from Tarangire to Ngorongoro Crater and spend one night at an accommodation to relax before your last day on safari.

Around the crater rim of Ngorongoro, there are a few accommodations available and we personally stayed at the beautiful Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp .

Intimately set in an ancient acacia forest, Ngorongoro Tented Camp has 10 spacious tents featuring two queen-size beds, roomy en-suite bathrooms, warm winter-weight duvets, and gas heaters to ensure a cozy night’s sleep.

Guests can also enjoy a sundowner while sitting around the campfire, and dinner and drinks are included for all guests.

DAY 3: NGORONGORO CRATER

The third and last day of this 3 day Tanzania safari is spent inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, mostly known for the Ngorongoro Crater.

Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, and is home to over 25,000 animals – yes, you read that right!

You’ll start the day early and descend into the crater where you’ll be greeted by an incredible lush, fertile landscape teeming with life.

After driving around and taking hundreds of photos, you’ll head to the lakeside where you’ll have a delicious picnic lunch with your guide.

Post-lunch, you’ll resume the game drive for another hour before exiting the crater and making your way back to Arusha town to conclude this incredible 3 day Tanzania safari.

ANIMALS IN NGORONGORO NATIONAL PARK

A safari in Ngorongoro Crater offers an incredible opportunity to see a wide variety of African wildlife in one place.

Below are some of the key animals you can expect to see;

  • The Big Five : Ngorongoro is one of the few places in Africa where you can see all of the “Big Five” – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.
  • Hippos : The crater’s lakes and swamps are home to large populations of hippos.
  • Zebra and Wildebeest : These two species are among the most common in the crater, and you can often see large herds roaming around.
  • Giraffes : While not as common as in other parks, giraffes can still be spotted.
  • Antelopes : Several different species of antelope live in the crater, including gazelles.

3 DAY SAFARI TANZANIA – FAQ

Now that you have a better idea of what to expect on a 3 Days Tanzania Safari, below are some answers to the most frequently asked questions from first-time visitors.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN A 3 DAY SAFARI IN TANZANIA?

BEST TIME TO TAKE A 3-DAY TANZANIA SAFARI?

The best time to take a 3-day safari in Tanzania largely depends on the weather and the wildlife you want to see.

The dry season, which runs from June to October, is generally regarded as the best time for safaris.

During this time, the weather is cooler, and wildlife tends to gather around water sources, making it easier to spot animals.

That being said, for those interested in seeing newborn animals, January to March can be a great time for a safari.

WHAT TO PACK FOR A 3-DAY TANZANIA SAFARI?

Here is a quick overview of what to pack for a 3 day safari Tanzania;

Clothing: Comfort is key on a safari. Pack lightweight cotton clothes, long-sleeved shirts, and pants to protect against mosquitoes. I suggest packing layered clothing, as mornings and evenings can be cool while days are warm.

Footwear: Comfortable shoes like trainers are recommended.

Essentials: Don’t forget your sunscreen and hat for protection against the sun. Also, carry a day bag for your everyday essentials.

Camera Gear: A camera with extra memory cards, batteries, a power bank, and a charger will help you capture the best memories from your trip.

IS THERE WI-FI ON THE SAFARI?

If you have a local SIM card, the mobile network is relatively consistent throughout Tanzania.

This means that you will be able to use your mobile data for browsing the internet, posting on social media, and staying connected as a whole.

The safari vehicles are also conveniently fitted with a Wi-Fi dongle.

Some lodges inside the park offer free Wi-Fi and most hotels in cities and towns also have Wi-Fi available for guest use.

Yet, keep in mind that you’re in a remote location and the connection might not always be strong.

3 DAYS VS 5 DAYS SAFARI IN TANZANIA

Choosing between a 3-day and a 5-day safari in Tanzania depends on several factors, including your budget, the time available, and what you want to experience.

I have personally done a 3-day safari in Tanzania as well as a 5-day safari and there were several differences.

A 3-day safari is a more condensed experience that allows you to explore some of Tanzania’s most famous parks. It’s perfect if you’re short on time or working with a tighter budget.

Typically, a 3-day safari can include visits to Arusha, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro. That being said, the tour operator you’ll book with will probably offer customization of the itinerary, just like I did with Altezza Travel.

A 5-day safari offers a more relaxed pace and a broader range of experiences. You can visit more parks, such as Serengeti National Park in addition to Tarangire and Ngorongoro.

You’ll have more time to observe the wildlife, take photographs, and soak in the natural beauty of the landscapes.

Note that the Serengeti is one of the largest national parks in Tanzania, and you’ll need 2-3 days to explore it, so a 5-day safari is a better option.

All in all, both the 3 days Tanzania Safari and 5 days Tanzania Safari have their perks.

6 Questions About Safaris From Zanzibar

What parks are best for a safari from Zanzibar?

“Most parks on the Tanzanian mainland are a short flight from Zanzibar, although in some cases you may need to change planes in Arusha or Dar es Salaam. If I could visit just one area of Tanzania on my safari from Zanzibar, it would be the country’s north. This is where you find Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, which are undoubtedly my top picks. Both of these destinations are really close to Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, which are fantastic wildlife destinations if you can spare the time. To do all four of these destinations, you would need a minimum of 10 days. Another option would be to head south, where you’ll find the wildlife-rich Nyerere National Park, which is especially good for varied landscapes, as well as elephants and lions. Visiting Nyerere would add at least 3 days to your overall trip. With more time, you could include Mikumi National Park and possibly even Ruaha National Park for a wilderness experience.”

How many days is recommended for a trip from Zanzibar?

“How long you devote to your safari from Zanzibar will depend on where you want to go. If you only have 3 to 4 days, you should probably focus on just one park. This might be Nyerere or the Serengeti. With each extra couple of days, you could add an extra park or two – Ngorongoro and perhaps even Lake Manyara in the north, or Mikumi in the south. If you can allow 10 days out of Zanzibar, then you could possibly complete the Northern safari circuit, or visit three or four parks across Tanzania’s south. It's worth talking with your operator about what combined Tanzania safari and Zanzibar packages are on offer. Many people who visit Zanzibar also visit the Tanzanian mainland, so you should have plenty of choice. And one final thing to remember: if you’re looking for a cheap or more affordable safari, you will need to try and minimize the number of flights while you’re on the mainland.”

Is a Serengeti safari possible from Zanzibar?

“It is possible to combine a trip to the Serengeti with time on Zanzibar, and there are lots of tours where this is an option. It usually involves a flight from Zanzibar to Arusha, in northern Tanzania, with a further flight from Arusha to one of the airstrips in the Serengeti. It is also possible to drive from Arusha to the Serengeti and enjoy some of the other attractions along the way (such as Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater), but this will add quite a bit of extra time. The Serengeti is certainly worth it and it’s one of my favorite parks anywhere in Africa. The wildlife here is incredible. This is especially the case during the great wildebeest migration, which you can see at different stages from January to August or September. But any time of year is good for wildlife viewing in the Serengeti, where you’ll see the big cats, elephant and so many other species.”

Should I go on a fly-in trip from Zanzibar?

“There will almost certainly be a flying component to your safari from Zanzibar. Although there are boat connections between Zanzibar Island and the mainland, they’re much slower than flying and not very convenient for those heading over to Tanzania for a safari. In addition to your flight from Zanzibar to the mainland (which usually means flying into Arusha or Dar es Salaam), you may also fly from these airports into the national park of your choice. This is, of course, much more expensive than driving. But it will save precious holiday time for actually being on safari, rather than driving to get there. It will also provide you with some incredible views. Taking an air transfer is like going on a scenic flight, and there’s something special about getting off a plane deep in a national park with wildlife all around you.”

How much does a Tanzania trip from Zanzibar cost?

“There are so many variables when it comes to calculating the cost of a Zanzibar to Tanzania mainland safari. But as a general guideline, you can expect your safari from Zanzibar to cost at least US$300 per person per day, with prices for more expensive packages triple that or more. There are many reasons for such differences. One is your accommodation: it obviously costs a lot more to stay in luxury tented camps than it does to go on a budget camping safari. The number of flights you take can also have a big influence. Other factors include the number of days you spend on safari, the season in which you’re traveling (high-season prices can be double what you’ll pay in low season) and the type of safari you choose (a private safari costs more than a group safari, for example).”

Can you do a classic safari on Zanzibar Island?

“A classic safari is not really possible on Zanzibar Island. You might find some wildlife parks on the island, but they are more like zoos, and visiting them is nothing like going on a real safari in one of Tanzania’s parks. If you’d like to get a real safari experience while you’re on Zanzibar, ask your tour operator what might be possible. They will have suggestions about where to go and what you can see by flying to the mainland. Before having such a conversation, you should do some of your own research and have a very clear idea of which animals you’d really like to see. If it’s big cats and elephants, then places such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Nyerere are all excellent. If, on the other hand, you’d like to follow in the footsteps of Jane Goodall and spend time tracking chimpanzees through the forest, then Gombe and Mahale Mountains National Parks (in the far west of the country) should be high on your list.”
