thailand to vietnam cruise

Hong Kong is a place of contrasts. Sleek, glassy skyscrapers shine above Old World markets where chicken feet and dried squid are displayed for sale. Archaic wooden boats bob past sleek cruise liners. Subway stations and expressway interchanges dot a landscape cluttered with Rolls Royces and rickshaws. Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1842 when those serving the British crown attacked the island. Though it was deeded back to China in 1997, Hong Kong enjoys a high degree of autonomy, especially in its economy and municipal government. Hong Kong is one of the most unique Chinese cities in the world. The 417-square mile island off the coast of China offers visitors a slice of authentic Chinese culture with all the amenities of home. A modern metropolis teeming with eastern and western influences, Hong Kong is the world's third-largest financial center, the so-called “Wall Street of Asia,” and a shopping gold mine. Shopping? Yes indeed. Hong Kong is a duty-free port and the world's leading exporter of toys, garments, watches, and electronics. As a result, the vast majority of the 10 million annual visitors come with an empty suitcase that they fill up after visiting the malls, street bazaars (Stanley Market is world famous), textile and tailor shops, and jade and electronic stores. Those willing to look beyond the bargain-basement prices will find that Hong Kong is more than the world’s largest department store – it’s a cultural Mecca with wining and dining, museums, and historic attractions. Be sure to ride the world famous Star Ferry across the harbor to Hong Kong Island, admire the mansions on Repulse Bay, drop in to see the temples on Cat Street, visit the fishing boats and villages in Aberdeen, and take a tram ride up to Victoria Peak (the island’s highest peak sitting 1,308-feet above the city) for a stunning panoramic view. If you have time to go further, travel to Macau, a former Portuguese colony with a casino, and the New Territories of China, a Hong Kong bedroom community that “sleeps” near China’s border.

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is known for its centuries-old architecture and a rich culture with Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. At its heart is the chaotic Old Quarter, where the narrow streets are roughly arranged by trade. There are many little temples, including Bach Ma, honoring a legendary horse, plus Dong Xuan market, selling household goods and street food.

thailand to vietnam cruise

Chan May Port is located in the south-east corner of Thua Thien-Hue Province in Loc Vinh commune, Phu Loc district, Vietnam. Chan May Port is mainly used for the wood chip industry. Occasionally, luxury cruise liners berth at Chan May as the port is located between the main tourist locations of Hue City and Hoi An. There currently are no passenger facilities at Chan May Port. Chan May is close to many great attractions. One gem that should not be missed is Hue, the former imperial city. Hue was the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945, and the Royal Palace, named the Forbidden Purple City, is just as mysterious as Beijing’s Forbidden City. Chan May is also close to the major port city of Da Nang as well as one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in central Vietnam – China Beach.

Ho Chi Minh City

thailand to vietnam cruise

In the core of the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is second the most important in Vietnam after Hanoi. It is not only a commercial center but also a scientific, technological, industrial and tourist center. The city is bathed by many rivers, arroyos and canals, the biggest river being the Saigon River. Many centuries ago, Saigon was already a busy commercial center. Merchants from China, Japan and many European countries would sail upstream the Saigon River to reach the islet of Pho, a trading center. In the year of 1874, Cho Lon merged with Saigon, forming the largest city in the Indochina. It had been many times celebrated as the Pearl of the Far East. After the reunification of the country, the 6 th National Assembly in its meeting of the 2 nd of July, 1976, has officially rebaptized Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City. Today, Ho Chi Minh City is the big tourism center in Vietnam, attracting a large of visitors to Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City has various attractions as Ho Chi Minh Museum, formerly known as Dragon House Wharf, Cu Chi Tunnels, system of museums, theatres, cultural houses... Recently, many tourist areas are invested such as Thanh Da, Binh Quoi Village, Dam Sen Park, Saigon Water Park, Suoi Tien, Ky Hoa..., which draw numerous tourists.

A foreigner's reaction to Thailand's capital is often as confused as the city's geography. Bangkok has no downtown, and streets, like the traffic, seem to veer off in every direction. There's even confusion about the city's name: though to Thais it is Krung Thep, the City of Angels, foreigners call it Bangkok. The oldest quarter clusters along the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River, which snakes between Bangkok and Thonburi, where the capital was first established after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767. When King Rama I moved his capital in 1782 across the river, he chose a site that foreign vessels knew from their navigational charts as the village of Bangkok. This settlement -- dominated by the Grand Palace and bordered by the Chao Phraya and semicircular klongs (canals) -- is called Ratanakosin and is today a jumble of streets that lead to palaces, government buildings, temples, and museums. In the last 25 years, the city has changed enormously. Before Bangkok became the destination for American servicemen during the Vietnam War, it had a population of 1.5 million. Then, as U.S. dollars attracted the rural poor and development began, it grew to more than 10 million, nearly 15% of the population and 40 times the size of any other city in Thailand. Nowadays, space in which to live and breathe is inadequate. Bangkok is infamous for its traffic-jammed streets and sois (side streets and alleys), and its air pollution is among the worst in the world (policemen directing traffic wear masks). When the economy collapsed in 1997 the traffic situation improved as people sold their cars instead of driving them, and the population shrunk as many returned to the countryside. But as the economy bounces back so does congestion. The skytrain, which opened in December 1999, makes some difference, and a subway system scheduled to open in 2002 should help. However, some streets, particularly Sukhumvit Road and other major arteries, still look like parking lots during much of the day, and as construction reawakens with the reviving economy, the traffic will only get worse. Even with its growing pains, though, Bangkok gives you a sense of history and timelessness, perhaps because King Rama I set out to build a city as beautiful as old Ayutthaya before the Burmese sacked it. Bangkok's contrasts require an adjustment on your part, but amid the chaos you soon come to appreciate the gentle nature of the Thais and their genuine respect for other people.

Amphoe Ko Samui

thailand to vietnam cruise

The island was probably first inhabited about 15 centuries ago, settled by fishermen from the Malay Peninsula[2] and southern China. It appears on Chinese maps dating back to 1687, under the name Pulo Cornam. The name samui is mysterious in itself. Perhaps it is an extension of the name of one of the native trees, mui. Some people believe that the word "samui" derives from the Malay word "saboey", or "safe haven", although there appears to be no credible corroboration of this. Ko is the Thai word for "island".

Though physically small, Singapore is an economic giant. It has been Southeast Asia's most modern city for over a century. The city blends Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and English cultures and religions. Its unique ethnic tapestry affords visitors a wide array of sightseeing and culinary opportunities from which to choose. A full calendar of traditional festivals and holidays celebrated throughout the year adds to its cultural appeal. In addition, Singapore offers luxury hotels, delectable cuisine and great shopping! Located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore's tropical climate welcomes both leisure and business travelers year round. The island republic's excellent infrastructure enables visitors to enjoy its many sites and attractions in a safe, clean and green environment. Award winning Changi Airport provides airlinks to major cities around the world. The train and subway systems are clean, fast and efficient. In addition, its state-of-the-art cruise terminal has established Singapore as one of the premier cruising centers of South East Asia and an exciting port of call on any Asian cruise itinerary. In the city, there is no need for a car. Public transportation is excellent and walking is a good way to explore the city . All major attractions are also accessible by tour bus. Since the city is only 60 miles (100k) from the equator, the tropical temperatures do not vary much. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed through the year. No matter when you choose to visit, warm weather will be abundantly available. The visitor is struck immediately by Singapore's abundance of parks, nature reserves, and lush, tropical greenery. Singapore's progress over the past three decades has been remarkable, yet the island has not been overwhelmed by development. Visitors will discover a wealth of historical treasures from the past, in the beauty of older buildings, values and traditions that have survived in the face of profound social and geographical change. Lacking any noteworthy natural resources, Singapore's early prosperity was based on a vigorous free trade policy, put in place in 1819 when Sir Stamford Raffles first established it as a British trading post. Later, mass industrialization bolstered the economy, and today the state boasts the world's second busiest port after Rotterdam, minimal unemployment, and a super efficient infrastructure. Almost the entire population lives in upscale new apartments, and the average per capita income is over US$12,000. Singapore is a clean, safe place to visit, its amenities are second to none and its public places are smoke-free and hygienic. Forming the core of downtown Singapore is the Colonial District. Each surrounding enclave has its own distinct flavor, from the aromatic spice stores of Little India, to the tumbledown backstreets of Chinatown, where it is still possible to find calligraphers and fortune tellers, or the Arab Quarter, whose cluttered stores sell fine cloths and silks. North of the city, are two nature preserves, Bukit Timah and the Central Catchment Area, along with the splendid Singapore Zoological Gardens. The east coast features good seafood restaurants set on long stretches of sandy beach. In addition there are over fifty islands and islets within Singaporean waters, all of which can be reached with varying degrees of ease. Day trips are popular to Sentosa, the island amusement arcade which is linked to the south coast by a short causeway and cable car. Music, theater, nightlife: all are abundant in this remarkable city. Singapore used to be considered a "stop over" on the way to larger Asian cities. This is no longer true! Visitors seek out Singapore for business and finance and also for a fascinating and satisfying vacation for the whole family. Strategically located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula sixty miles from the equator, Singapore has for centuries been a crossroads between East and West. Chinese traders en route to India had navigated its waters from at least the 5th century. In the 14th century it was part of the powerful Vijayan Empire and was known as Tenmasek or Sea Town. Legend has it that it was renamed Singa Pura or Lion City after a visiting Sumatran prince saw an animal he mistook for a lion, an animal considered a good omen. Modern Singapore came into being in 1819 when Sir Stamford Raffles claimed what was then a small fishing village as a regional base for the East India Company. The island's natural harbor and location made it an ideal site for a trading post serving British trade interests between China, the Malay world and India. Singapore flourished as its free trade policy attracted merchants and residents from all over the world. Raffles initiated a town plan which included leveling one hill to form a new commercial district (now Raffles Place) and constructing government buildings around another hill (now called Fort Canning Hill). The British plan also involved separating the population according to ethnic categories with Europeans, Indians, Chinese and Malays each living and working in their own distinct quarters of the city. Revenues soared in ensuing years from the production of opium and rubber. Millionaires were made overnight. Immigration rose steadily. The island became Britain's strategic defense base in the Far East but fell to the Japanese in 1942. After the world war ended in 1945, Singapore became a crown colony. It gained self governing status in 1959 and independence in 1965 when it became part of the new state of Malaysia which united Malaya with Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak. The alliance did not last. Singapore was used to being on its own, and within two years the island set up its own stable government and became known as the Republic of Singapore. Under Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew's leadership, Singapore continued to strengthen its infrastructure and its industrial base. Housing and urban renovation kept pace with population growth. The areas of health and education are strong. Singapore's leaders have also brought order and progress through strict regulation of social behavior. Smoking in public was banned, as was gum chewing. High economic growth rates have supported political stability. Singapore is the world's second busiest seaport, has an airport served by over 50 major airlines. It has state of the art communication and mass transit systems. It is Asia's premier center for finance and business and the world's third largest oil refining center. Over 7 million visit the tiny island every year.

How to Plan a River Cruise from Thailand to Vietnam?

thailand to vietnam cruise

Southeast Asia is one of the hottest destinations for international tourists around the world, and with a host of countries to visit, there is an endless wealth of things to see and do. Southeast Asia includes the countries of Mainland Southeast Asia (the Indochinese Peninsula); Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam; as well as the Maritime Southeast Asian countries of Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, and East Timor.

Thailand beach

For most travelers to tour Southeast Asia , the Indochinese Peninsula is one of the most popular destinations, and in this region, river cruises have become one of the most popular tours available. The massive Mekong River - which runs from the Tibetan plateau, through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam - is one of the most popular places for river cruises, and there are a huge number of tourists that opt for this stunning boat ride along the Mekong traveling from Thailand to Vietnam . An awesome slow-boat cruise, there is no better way to travel from Thailand, across Laos and Cambodia, and ending in Vietnam.

Check for more ways about how to get from Thailand to Vietnam.

Best Time to Have a River Cruise from Thailand to Vietnam

The vast region of the Mekong River in Southeast Asia actually crosses through several different climate zones, and knowing when the best time to travel through them all is, is important if you are planning a cruise along the Mekong River. While most of the region has the typical two-season climate of Southeast Asia, the seasons can overlap somewhat, and the dry season can start at different times in different areas. The best time to travel along the Mekong River is in the dry season, which mostly runs from November to April , across the region. However, the optimum time of in the period of the dry season from November to January.

The rainy season across the region has ended by the beginning of November, and while the dry season has started, the land is still lush and green from the rains, and the river is still slightly swollen from the monsoon. Moreover, without all the rain, you will not be restricted to spending any time in the cabin. From February to April, the weather across the region tends to start getting hotter, and can be uncomfortable for travel, not to mention that the river starts to dry up a little in this period. While not completely dry, it does have stretches where there is little water for the boats to travel along.

While the dry season is the best time to take a Mekong cruise, it is possible to take it in the wet season, and since the rain usually falls in the late afternoon and evening, you may not find yourself confined to your cabin as much as you thought. This is another attraction that brings passengers to the cruises, as they want to experience the season where the landscape and scenery is at its greenest and most vibrant.

The Most Recommend Cruise

Cruises along the Mekong River can be done in many different ways, from taking the cruise in small chunks, visiting other areas along the river as you go, to making it one big trip from the border of Thailand and Laos all the way to the Vietnamese city of Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City. Cruises that run along the Mekong can be for as little as a day or two, to as much as 8-11 days, depending on where you are traveling from and to, and whether you plan on stopping at different points to explore before carrying on along the river.

The main route that runs from Thailand to Vietnam does not actually start in Thailand , since the Mekong only actually runs along the border, separating Thailand and Laos all the way to the Golden Triangle area where Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar all converge. However, there is no cruise that runs all the way from the Golden Triangle to the Mekong Delta, so it would have to be done in stages. Travelers need to make the trip in short boat rides, from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang or Vientiane, and then from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh or on to Saigon.

River cruise to Vietnam

Day 1 – Huay Xai to Pakbeng

Day 1 – After leaving Chiang Rai for Chiang Khong, you cross the border to Huay Xai, just inside Laos, where you will board the boat for the first day of the cruise. As you drift along the river, the jungles of Laos and Thailand on either side soon give way to rolling hills, and by lunchtime, you will dock in one of the small villages along the river to explore the local Laotian culture. In the afternoon, your cruise continues along the river, and the shores slowly turn to jungle again, as you near the small town of Pakbeng, where the boat stops for the night.

Day 2 – Pakbeng to Luang Prabang

Day 2 – After a good night’s sleep, your journey continues, and the hours tick by as the scenery passes you by on the banks of the river. As the boat nears Luang Prabang in Laos, the hills turn to mountains, and the mountains slowly get bigger. In the afternoon, just after lunch, you will dock at a small village on the northern shore called Pak Ou, from where you will be taken on small boats across the river and into the famous Pak Ou Caves. The caves area a revered Buddhist shrine in Laos filled with hundreds of Buddhist statues. After a few hours, the boat continues and an hour later you will reach Luang Prabang and the next stop for the night.

Royal Palace in Luang Prabang

Day 3 – Luang Prabang to Ban Muang

Day 3 – The start of the day sees you heading off downriver from Luang Prabang, and around lunchtime you will reach the newly-built lock that is part of the Xanyaburi Hydro Electric Power Plant. From the lock, you will continue down to the Kmu Tribal Village at Ban Park Bor, where you can stretch your legs for the afternoon, before continuing on to the next stop at Ban Muang.

Day 4 – Ban Muang to Vientiane

Day 4 – The trip continues from Ban Muang to Vientiane, passing through the French Administrative town of Pak Lai, with its colonial buildings and bustling markets, where you can stop off for an hour to explore. As this is your last night on the boat, you will have a farewell dinner, before heading for bed and the view of Vientiane as you rise in the morning.

Day 5 – Flight to Siem Reap

Day 5 – You will need to get a flight from Vientiane to Siem Reap, as it is not possible to travel most of the Mekong along the Laos border with the Thai provinces of Sakon Nakhon and Ubon Ratchathani due to waterfalls and rapids. It is also not possible to cross the border between Laos and Cambodia along the river.

Angkor Wat in Siem Reap

Day 6 – Siem Reap to Tonle Sap by car; Chong Khneas to Kampong Tralach

Day 6 – Board the ship in Siem Reap at the northern end of the Tonle Sap Lake, and sail down the lake to the first stop at the village of Kampong Chhnang, one of the largest fishing ports on the Tonle Sap River. Continue on down the Tonle Sap River to Kampong Tralach, where you will moor for the night.

Day 7 – Kampong Tralach to Neak Loeung

Day 7 – Your journey continues in the morning, heading south along the Tonle Sap River, until you reach the Mekong again, just to the north of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. Most tours do stop in Phnom Penh for an afternoon, before heading on to the border and mooring at Neak Loeung for the night.

Day 8 - Neak Loeung to My Tho

Day 8 – The day begins with the short trip to the border, where you will spend around 2-3 hours while your passports and visas are checked for entry into Vietnam. Once complete, you will cross the border on the river, and follow the upper reaches of the Mekong Delta as far as My Tho.

Day 9 – My Tho to Ho Chi Minh City

Day 9 – Finish your cruise with the short journey from My Tho through the Mekong Delta to the Vietnamese city of Ho Chi Minh, formerly known as Saigon, where you will disembark.

Attentions during River Cruise from Thailand to Vietnam

There are a large number of ships that run the two main stretches of the Mekong, and for the stretch from Huay Xai to Vientiane, it is important to pick your ship carefully, as many of the boats that run the route along the Upper Mekong are little more than barges that overcharge and have no accommodation. Find a decent cruise boat that has cabins included, and that does not require you to stay in hotels along the river, as the hotels give a kickback to the boats to only stop at their own dock for the night.

Some parts of the river cruise can leave you cold and shivering , especially in the period of the dry season, from November to January. Make sure that you bring a warm coat to wear when the weather gets cold, normally in the evenings and early mornings. And if you are prone to being a little seasick, remember to bring sea sickness tablets, as they may not be available once you board.

The Lower Mekong is much more commercial than the Upper, and the boats that run the routes from Siem Reap and Saigon or Saigon to Stung Treng are a little more expensive than those of the Upper Mekong . Look for a reputable company, rather than just the cheapest, as there are many unregistered boats that will offer their services for a private cruise.

Taking a cruise along the Mekong River is one of the most stunning cruises in Southeast Asia, and gives you a great look into the cultures of the river tribes that still live alongside the river and make a living from its waters. It is unfortunate that the river cannot yet be navigated for its entire length, from the Golden Triangle to the Mekong Delta, although there are plans underway to try and rectify this in the future, to make one long cruise possible.

The easiest way to get from the city to the port for your Thailand and Vietnam cruise is by taxi. Ask your hotel for help in making a reservation.

Alternatively, see our detailed information on how to get to the port here .

Your port check-in time is on your cruise ticket. Make sure you get there in time!

  • Cruise Line: Celebrity Cruises
  • Name of Ship: Celebrity Solstice – read more about this elegant ship here !
  • Start Date: Departures from December to March (Tip! Cruise dates and itineraries are subject to change at any time. Check with Celebrity Cruises at the time of booking.)
  • Cruise Port: From the Port of Singapore to Hong Kong

Days 6 to 18: 12-night (13 days) Thailand and Vietnam Cruise with Celebrity Cruises

Cruise day 1: singapore.

Check-in for your cruise at the port. Explore your fantastic ship, equipped with all the amenities you want and need in any resort.

Head up to the top deck for the sail-away party to experience the city of Singapore from the water’s edge as you leave port.

Cruise Day 2 and 3: Cruising at sea

You are cruising at sea on your cruise’s second and third days. The distance from Singapore to Bangkok – your next stop – is over 700 nautical miles, so it takes time to get there.

You are sailing the South China Sea up past Malaysia and into the Gulf of Thailand. Enjoy the days on deck by the pool, or join one of the activities. Find out what’s going on during the day by checking the app for the daily program.

Use this time to read up on the menus in the Main Dining room and specialty restaurants. Look out for special offers or go to specialty restaurants and talk to the staff.

Talk to your cabin steward if you need anything for your cabin or any furniture removed that takes up too much of your space. They are more than happy to help accommodate your needs.

Cruise Day 4 and 5: Bangkok/Laemchabang, Thailand

In Thailand, your cruise ship stays on the dock overnight for a good reason. With so much to see and do in Bangkok during the day and evening, you will be happy for the extra time in port.

The cruise ship docks in Laem Chabang cruise port. It takes about 1.5 hours to get into Bangkok. We strongly recommend that you pre-book transportation or a transfer with a shore excursion. Traffic can be chaotic in the city and very unpredictable.

Some suppliers cater well to the cruise market coming into Laem Chabang. Viator is one of them that does a full-day excursion to temples, markets, and much more, with pick up and drop off at the cruise port.

Remember, the cruise ship stays overnight in port, so you have a second day to explore the city, too.

Instead of doing the long transfer back to ship for your overnight in the harbor, many guests choose to book a hotel. That way, you can stay in the center of Bangkok, ready for a new day of sightseeing.

Bangkok highlights:

  • Grand Palace
  • Golden Buddha at Wat Pho Temple
  • Chatuchak Weekend Market
  • Phahurat night market
  • Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat   Phra Kaew).

Visit Siam Paragon, one of the city’s most popular malls, for great shopping. There is a food court on the ground floor, too.

And next door is Central World, even bigger than Siam Paragon, with an array of boutiques, international shops, and local craft shops.

Tourism Thailand has an excellent visitor website with tips and information for getting around Bangkok.

Cruise Day 6: Cruising at sea

On day 6 of your cruise, you sail from Thailand to the capital city of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. You cruise back through the Gulf of Thailand and out into the South China Sea, past the western shores of Cambodia, and up the southeast coast of Vietnam.

Time to check out the spa on board? There will be a spa menu with many treatment options, or you may want to attend a yoga class or turn up at the gym for a lunchtime workout.

Cruise Day 7: Ho Chi Minh (Phu My), Vietnam

Visiting this fascinating city is busy, congested, chaotic, and exciting – while at the same time being rich in culture with proud traditions. It can be hot, humid, or rainy. It’s a fantastic experience and one you will be unlikely to forget.

The cruise port is quite far from the city, and a transfer into Ho Chi Minh (also known as Saigon) will take around 1.5 hours.

Once in the center, you are in what is known as District 1. It’s where most of the city’s attractions are, starting at Dong Khoi Street.

The architecture is a blend of traditional sitting alongside traditional French colonial palace. Pick up a guidebook if you choose not to have a guided tour so you learn the history as you see the sights.

The local food is excellent and inexpensive, and your coffee will be laced with ginger and honey. It’s exotic and basic all at the same time.

You can visit designer shopping malls or the city’s largest indoor market, Ben Thanh. Don’t miss the War Remnants Museum, an extraordinary place re-telling the story of Vietnam’s horrific war.

Experience the Mekong Delta

You can walk to the Botanical Gardens and the zoo from the city center or take a local bus to Bin Quoi Village, about 10 km away. The village was created to reflect the scenery of the Mekong Delta region and gives an authentic glimpse into life by the Mekong River if you choose not to do a river excursion on this port of call.

If you want to escape the city, a fantastic day excursion and one that comes highly recommended is a boat journey through the Mekong River. You will see traditional temples, canal islands, floating markets, and the people’s way of life in this unique Delta region.

We recommend booking a shore excursion that includes transportation with your cruise line or a trusted external vendor. Be sure to leave plenty of time at the end of the day to return to the port in good time to be on board again.

Cruise Day 8: Nha Trang, Vietnam

Today, you’ll dock at the coastal resort of Nha Trang at Cau Da Port. Known for its beaches, islands, and protected marine life, Nha Trang also offers a busy city and beach promenade dotted with hotels and restaurants.

There are often free shuttle buses to get you from the port to Nha Trang center. Check with the excursions desk on board before you dock in Nha Trang.

Alternatively, there are taxis by the port which will get you there in 10 minutes.

If you want to shop in the markets, try Cho Dam Market, the city’s primary market.

For a cultural experience, visit Po Nagar Cham Towers and Thap Ba Hot Springs. These sights are located less than a half hour from the center of Nha Trang.

Hon Mun Island is one of the most popular day excursions from Nha Trang. For powder-white sandy beaches and fantastic snorkeling, this is the place. You will need a bus transfer to the harbor and a boat to get you there and back. We recommend booking a ship excursion or an excursion with a trusted external provider.

Cruise Day 9: Da Nang, Vietnam

Today, you’ll be docking at Da Nang, one of Vietnam’s largest cities. You’ll need to decide how to spend your day as there is a lot to see – are you after history and culture, nature or fun and relaxation?

It’s a difficult choice. The full-day excursions that are possible from Danang are numerous and all fantastic.

Enjoy the city’s beaches (My Khe Beach is beautiful), shopping, temples, and cathedrals. Enjoy the fantastic fireworks and water displays on the Golden Dragon Bridge at the weekend.

Alternatively, leave the city to visit the famous Marble Mountains. Or a cable car ride out into the Ba Na Hills, not for the faint-hearted.

The choices are many, and we recommend that you take the time to plan your visit before you leave home. Learn about what there is to see so you choose the best excursion for you and your family.

Cruise Day 10: Cruising at Sea

Today is a good day to catch up on a show you may have missed. Check your cruise planner and see if you can catch some afternoon shows.

Plan to visit a music venue that you haven’t been to yet, or try a new bar up on deck that’s open late under the stars.

Cruise Day 11: Hanoi (Halong Bay), Vietnam

Your final port of call on this cruise to Thailand and Vietnam before arriving in Hong Kong harbor is Hanoi, the ancient capital of Vietnam.

The city is intense at any hour – noisy, crowded, and a scene of chaos. And an unforgettable experience.

Explore on foot the main areas of the Old Quarter and the French Quarter. Shopping is plentiful, but watch out for pickpockets.

Visit the Hanoi Opera House, the Water Puppet Theater, and Ngoc Son Temple. You can reach the temple by walking across the Huc Bridge. The bridge stretches over Lake Hoan Kiem to Jade Island, where the temple is situated.

But by far, one of the most unforgettable experiences is to book an excursion to the limestone mountains of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Halong Bay. Famous, of course, for its outstanding scenic ocean topography.

It’s rather like being transported to another world.

Cruise Day 12: Cruising at Sea

This is your last full day on board the ship, so make the most of the activities, the food, and the entertainment!

Cruise Day 13: Hong Kong, China

Disembark your cruise ship in Hong Kong. Extend your vacation in Asia with a few days at one of our recommended hotels in Hong Kong. Explore Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, and travel easily in between using the Star Ferry.

How to get from the Hong Kong cruise terminal to your hotel in Kowloon

Most cruise lines now use the newer Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on Victoria Harbour. It also has a fantastic sky garden with water parks and fountains.

It is worth a visit to stroll the gardens and enjoy fantastic panoramic views. Explore before you head to your hotel; it’s home to restaurants, cafes, and bars offering local craft beers.

And it’s hard to believe it was once the old airport that used to service international flights into Hong Kong. You will see some structures that give a nod to its aviation history.

Taxi : A taxi is the most convenient way to get from the cruise terminal to your hotel. You may have to be a bit patient as it will be crowded.

Bus: A city bus takes about 30 minutes to get from Kai Tak Cruise Terminal to Kowloon. Check with the driver who stops you need for your hotel.

Shuttle Bus : There are often free shuttle buses at the cruise terminal, which can take you to the nearest metro station. Public transport is easy to use. But just be sure you know the name of the closest station to your hotel.

How to get from Hong Kong cruise terminal to Hong Kong International Airport.

If you decide not to extend your stay in Hong Kong, there are taxis at the cruise terminal to take you to the airport.

Alternatively, book a shore excursion that ends at the airport. This way you can enjoy a sightseeing day in the city.

Recommended hotels in Hong Kong

We recommend that you stay in the tourist area of Kowloon, close to the main shopping on Nathan Road. You are close to shopping and entertainment. And the Star Ferry service that takes you across the bay to Hong Kong Island is within walking distance.

Here is a list of our favorite cruise customer-friendly hotels in Hong Kong:

  • Hilton Garden Inn, Hong Kong Mongkok
  • Stanford Hotel
  • Holiday Inn Golden Mile
  • Kowloon Hotel
  • Royal Pacific Hotel
  • Intercontinental Grand Stanford

Days 18 to 21: Discover Hong Kong

Book 3 nights in a hotel at the end of your cruise to explore Hong Kong . The public transport in Hong Kong is excellent. Don’t be afraid to use the MRT train, buses, or cable cars to get around.

See the best of Kowloon’s Tsim Sha Tsui area on a one-day self-walking tour. For great shopping and numerous lunch venues to choose from, start at Ocean Terminal Deck. The observatory tower gives outstanding panoramic views.

Alternatively, visit Hong Kong’s tallest building, the International Commerce Center. You get 360-degree views on the 100th floor. And even a Virtual Reality Experience of how Hong Kong used to be hundreds of years ago.

Temple Street is full of markets and street food, while Nathan Road offers designer labels and major hotel chains.

Walk the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade by Victoria Harbour in the evening. Stay until dark and watch Symphony of Lights. The musical show is performed every evening, weather allowing. It combines colorful lights and lasers lighting up Hong Kong’s skyline and harbor.

Hong Kong Island

Hop onto the Star Ferry in Kowloon and take the short boat ride from Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island. Take the tram to Victoria Peak and climb to the observation deck. This is the best and most breathtaking view of Hong Kong.

Lantau Island

From Kowloon, take a boat ride or a train to Lantau Island. The beaches are suitable for swimming and relaxing.

Best of all is a visit to the village of Ngong Ping. It’s a 20-minute cable car ride from Tung Chung station. A visit to the beautiful Po Lin Monastery is well worth it. Follow up with a climb to the breathtaking Tian Tan Buddha. This is one of the world’s largest statues of a sitting Buddha.

How to get from the city center to Hong Kong International Airport.

Airport express train.

The quickest way to get from the city center to the airport is by using the Airport Express train. The Airport Express train starts at Kowloon station. You may need to book a taxi ride to get to the station.

Airport Shuttle Service

Use the airport shuttle services directly from your hotel to the airport. It will take a bit longer, but you get door-to-door service. And it will be a less expensive way to travel than a taxi.

Stay in a major hotel and ask when booking if you can reserve seats on the airport transfer bus for your return journey to the airport.

The Holiday Inn Golden Mile, Kowloon, and Park Hotel have this bus service, along with Langham Hong Kong, Royal Pacific Hotel, and the InterContinental Grand Stanford. But check with your hotel when booking, as this is subject to change.

The service costs around USD$20 per person.

The most expensive option for two people traveling together is to take a taxi from your hotel to the airport. Ask your hotel concierge to organize a taxi for you. The journey is about 30 minutes and will cost around USD $40.

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
