[Updated for 2024] The means of luxurious lifestyle experiences around us are immense in number. While the search for a one-of-a-kind experience on the land ends with a long list of options to live in the moment, the experiential purchases at sea are limited in contrast to its enormity.

However, at sea, the experiences the luxurious cruise ships and yachts can offer transcend the outnumbered choices on land.

As being affordable to many customers compared to yachts, cruise ships play a big role in meeting the demands of the multi-billion dollar ocean tourism industry.

These floating cities redefine luxury travel by offering awe-inspiring experiences coupled with sumptuous, superlative amenities and impeccable services for travel enthusiasts.

With the increasing demand of customers and the competition within the market, the cruise lines are regularly enriching the cruise experiences with innovative and creative offerings onboard, outdoing each other.

There are massive cruise ships operating at sea today. As a result, the industry attracts billions in investment annually, resulting in the entry of luxurious and expensive cruise ships into operation.

The eight most expensive cruises in the world

From a trip through southeast asia to a 145-day adventure sailing around the world, all of these voyages have something in common: boats with luxury facilities and services, with prices only suitable for wealthy pockets.

Cruceros Más Caros Lujo

If you hate cruises, maybe it’s because you haven’t found your cruise. Those floating megacities that arrive at port and disembark 5,000 passengers in one go, saturating a city for several hours without spending a euro because they have everything included on board, are the most stereotypical image of the sector. But there are many types of journeys, from small expedition cruises through remote areas where, instead of dancing the conga, you attend lectures from experts on zoology or glaciology, to the hyper-luxury cruises suitable only for wealthy pockets . There, you will not have to fight for a sun chair at the pool or wait in line for a dry burger from the buffet.

I once attended one — for work reasons — with only 600 passengers. Every eight or ten cabins shared a private butler. Ours was named Igor, and he told me that I could order whatever I wanted for a snack. “Even caviar?” I asked jokingly. “Even caviar,” he replied very seriously. So every afternoon, at five o’clock, Igor showed up with a bottle of champagne and a generous tray of Russian caviar, enough to eat by the spoonful. My taste buds still remember it.

Here are eight of the most expensive cruises in the world. They all have some common characteristics: luxury suites, many of them with a private terrace, and 24-hour restaurant service, as well as, of course, the gym, heated pool, sauna and spa, as well as bathroom products from brands like L’Occitane and Hermès. Cheer up, dreaming costs nothing!

1. Around the world in 145 days, 72 ports and 28 countries

Beagle Channel, Chile

This 145-day voyage departs on January 11, 2024, from Los Angeles and ends on June 5 in the port of Piraeus, in Athens. It is aboard the Seabourn Sojourn , a hyper-luxury cruise ship, where the lucky ones who can pay €75,499 ($79,777) will spend half a year traveling half the world through the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. You can buy intermediate routes at more “affordable” prices: from €10,000 to €40,000 ($10,567 to $42,269).

2. Europe through seven rivers and 14 countries

A month and a half sailing through the main rivers of central Europe! The joke costs somewhere between $24,999 (based on double occupancy per cabin) to $55,998 for the most luxurious suite. Yes, you read correctly: more than $1,000 per day. The ship sets sail from Arles, France, and ends în Giurgiu, Romania, after passing through Holland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. The voyage lasts 45 nights. It is organized by AmaWaterways and the next departure is scheduled for April 20, ending on June 4, 2024.

3. The Arctic, from Norway to Canada

For those who like frozen landscapes, cold seas and remote places, this 30-day Silversea cruise between Trømso, Norway, and Churchill, Canada, is the cruise for you, as long as you have the €32,700 (about $34,500) per person that the simplest cabin costs. It makes stops in the Svalbard Islands, in Iceland, in various points in southern Greenland and in various ports in Nunavut, the Arctic province of Canada. The price includes everything, from a private transfer that picks up the passenger at their home, until it returns them to their home. Only departure, June 15, 2024.

4. Around the world from Barcelona

The entertainment room on board the 'Costa Deliziosa,' of the Costa Cruises shipping company.

Depart from Barcelona on January 13, 2024, to go around the world on one of Costa Cruise’s ships, the Costa Deliziosa. In total, there are 115 days of travel across the seven seas, crossing from the Atlantic to the Pacific through the Panama Canal and visiting from Japan to Chile, passing through Australia, India, the Fiji Islands and the French Polynesia. Starting at €18,409 ($19,457) euros, the journey ends on May 6, 2024, in Savona, Italy.

5. From Alaska to Japan

On board the luxury ship Seven Seas Explorer , the shipping company Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers a 20-day tour that begins its voyage in Vancouver, in the Canadian province of British Columbia, and sails through the Inside Passage to Ketchikan and Icy Sound, Alaska. After crossing the imaginary International Time Line and another four days of sailing through the Pacific, the ship will enter Japanese waters, stopping in Kushiro, Hakodate, Sendai, and Yokohama (Tokyo). For €10,379 euros (nearly $11,000), you can join the departure on September 17, 2025.

6. Destination Hawaii

From Vancouver (Canada), the Explora I ship , from the Explora Journeys company, will sail five days through the North Pacific towards Hawaii to stop at some of its main destinations: Hilo, Honolulu, Lahaina and Nawiliwili. On your way back to Canada, before finishing back in your departure city, you will stop in Victoria. In total, the 19-day trip, which departs on April 18, 2024, has a cost from €9,650 to €20,850 ($10,000 to $22,000), depending on the cabin.

7. Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand

Seabourn Encore

You can backpack through Southeast Asia with four euros, or you can feel like a king on this cruise aboard the Seabourn Encore , which goes from Hong Kong to Singapore, crossing the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. It has stops in Vietnam (Halong Bay, Hue Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh), Cambodia (Sihanoukville) and several islands in Thailand. It’s 14 days of luxury for €6,199 ($6,500). Departures scheduled for January 20, 2024.

8. The Caribbean and Panama

Anything for warmer waters? The Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours depart from Montego Bay, in the north of Jamaica, to go to the Colombian Providencia Island and the Nicaraguan Corn Islands. It then heads to Panama, where it will stop at Boca del Toro, the San Blas archipelago and San José Island, ending at Fort Amador in the Panamanian capital. It lasts nine days. Departures begin on October 31, 2023, and costs start at €7,523 (nearly $8,000) per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises will sail what may well be the most expensive commercial cruise ever in 2027: an around-the-world trip with prices ranging from just under $100,000 to almost $1 million per person.

Sound over the top? Yes, for most travelers. But the luxury line expects the cruise will break company sales records, just as many of its past world cruises have, often selling out the day bookings opened.

“People are more eager than ever to embark on once-in-a-lifetime luxury travel experiences,” said Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “In fact, over the past few years, we’ve received continued interest and increasing demand for our world cruises as discerning travelers want to venture further and for longer durations. Now more than ever, people do not want to wait for opportunities to pass them by.”

Indeed, weeks- and even months-long world cruises have become a popular travel style in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the luxury and upscale cruise markets.

To meet the growing demand, Regent’s 2027 world cruise will be the first aboard one of the company’s largest and newest explorer class ships, the 746-passenger Seven Seas Splendor , which launched in 2020. The ship has 373 suites across 15 categories, ranging from the 307-square-foot Veranda Suite to its lavish, one-of-a-kind 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite.

Perched on the 14th deck, the Regent Suite has unobstructed 270-degree views over the ship’s bow from a 1,300-square-foot wraparound veranda. A glass-enclosed solarium offers a view that mirrors that of the captain’s from the bridge. The over-the-top accommodation also has its own spa retreat complete with a personal sauna, steam room, and Jacuzzi, as well as original Picasso artworks adorning the walls, a custom Steinway Grand Maroque Piano by Dakota Jackson, and a handcrafted Hästens Vividus mattress, which retails for more than $200,000, topped with the finest bed linens and pillow styles.

The bed in the Regent Suite of the Seven Seas Splendor features a handcrafted Hästens Vividus mattress, which retails for more than $200,000.

Regent Suite guests will also have a dedicated butler, a full bar, and a personal car and driver in every port.

Fares for the 140-night voyage, which departs on January 11, 2027, start at $91,499 per guest for a Veranda Suite and go up to $839,999 per guest for the opulent Regent Suite. Travelers who prefer a slightly shorter journey can sail a 126-night Miami-to-Rome voyage, with fares ranging from $84,999 per guest up to $755,999 per guest.

So, what exactly does one get for those prices?

Fares for the World of Splendor sailing include first-class round-trip flights, door-to-door luggage service, 486 shore excursions, specialty dining, wine and spirits, unlimited Wi-Fi, and unlimited laundry and dry cleaning.

Where will the ship go?

For this 140-day world cruise, the Seven Seas Splendor will sail from Miami to New York, visiting 71 ports of call (including 14 overnight stays) in the Caribbean, South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Guests will travel 35,668 nautical miles across 3 oceans, exploring 40 countries on 6 continents.

Over more than four months, passengers will have the opportunity to celebrate Carnival in Panama City, visit a Sri Lankan street festival in Colombo, and step back in time during an exclusive Roaring ’20s–themed event in Málaga, Spain, that will feature haute couture and vintage automobile displays. The itinerary includes visits to 73 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, among them Kakadu National Park in Australia, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Elephanta Caves in India, and Palmeral of Elche near Alicante, Spain.

An outdoor dining area on the 'Seven Seas Splendor' featuring multiple tables and chairs with blue umbrellas and views of the sea

There are nine dining venues on board the Seven Seas Splendor , including alfresco eating areas, in addition to wellness options, cooking classes, and entertainment.

What’s there to do on board?

The ship has a full spa and wellness center with included classes and activities led by fitness and mindful living experts. There’s a culinary arts kitchen for hands-on cooking lessons, evening entertainment, and nine dining venues, ranging from Compass Rose, offering a customized menu each night of the cruise, to Pan-Asian outpost Pacific Rim and the elevated steakhouse Prime 7. There’s also a French bistro called Chartreuse, and Sette Mari at La Veranda serves Italian fare with stunning ocean views.

Under parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Regent Seven Seas is part of the company’s larger Sail and Sustain program , which invests in ways to reduce emissions and the environmental impact of the fleet through investments in new and evolving green technologies. It also encompasses Regent’s Eco-Connect Tours , on which passengers can engage with local communities that are promoting sustainable tourism initiatives like biodynamic and organic wine production in Bordeaux, France, and visiting a sloth sanctuary in Costa Rica.

Regent’s 2027 World Cruise is currently open for bookings either by calling (844) 4-REGENT or by visiting the Regent website .

Inside the Most Expensive Suite on the World's Most Expensive Cruise Ship (Video)

the most expensive cruise ship

Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas — the biggest and most expensive ( $1.35 billion ) cruise ship ever created — will set sail from Barcelona on Friday.

After accepting the new ship last week , Royal Caribbean took back the record for world’s largest cruise ship. Ahead of the ship’s maiden voyage, the cruise line is revealing what passengers can expect onboard.

Families who rent out the most expensive room on the world’s most expensive cruise ship will be treated to a superlative experience. The Ultimate Family Suite is spread across two levels of the ship and takes up 1,346 square feet.

Although there is plenty to do on the rest of the ship, guests in the suite won’t ever have to leave their quarters. The accommodation features a ping-pong table, an air hockey table, and a slide to get from the top floor to the bottom. There’s also a full-size whirlpool hot tub on the balcony — complete with unobstructed views of the water.

Kids will be delighted by the suite’s Lego wall, 3-D cinema room and popcorn machine. The Family Suite can sleep up to eight people, all of whom have access to a personal butler.

Throughout the summer, the ship will sail across the Mediterranean, making stops in Spain, France and Italy. In November, the Symphony of the Seas will make its way to Miami, from where it will depart on trips through the Caribbean. But the “ultimate” family experience doesn’t come cheap. A family of four can book the suite for a seven-day cruise starting at $50,000 .

The byword is exclusivity. Perks included in the cruise fare may include beverages, Wi-Fi, fresh flowers, extraordinary pampering and, in some cases, butler service.

The price to get on board could be $1,000 per person, per day. For top suites, it could be much, much more.

Here are our picks for the top nine luxury cruise lines currently operating.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

the most expensive cruise ship

Catering to adventurous luxury cruise travelers with money to spend, the new cruise line Atlas Ocean Voyages , which debuted in the summer of 2021, offers upscale experiences on small ships that carry just 196 passengers.

World Navigator, World Traveller and World Voyager, the first three of five planned vessels in the fleet, carry their own landing craft, Jet Skis, kayaks and paddleboards, all of which can be used by passengers wishing for some adventure while exploring the world on itineraries that include the Mediterranean, Portugal and the British Isles, as well as more remote locales like the Arctic and Antarctica.

Although the onboard dress code is casual, the ships are anything but, featuring elegant, retro-chic decor and marble floors.

In addition to including Wi-Fi, crew gratuities, alcohol and some shore excursions in its fares, Atlas provides all passengers with emergency medical evacuation insurance to handle unexpected illness or injury in the remote locations its ships sail.

Overall, Atlas has found a way to seamlessly meld swank and leisure, making it one of our favorite luxury cruise lines.

Silversea Cruises

the most expensive cruise ship

Silversea , with a dozen 100- to 728-passenger ships, has some of the most diverse geographic itineraries of any line, bringing guests to destinations around the world, including such remote places as the Arctic and Antarctica.

Now owned by Royal Caribbean Group (the same company that owns Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises ), the luxury cruise line delivers stylish, contemporary luxury — more streamlined than opulent — complemented by pleasantly extreme pampering.

Every Silversea ship passenger stays in a suite with a butler delivering superb service — even on the 100-passenger Silver Origin in the remote Galapagos, where your butler might take extraordinary care to get a spot off your hiking boots. Suite niceties include Bulgari bath products and marble bathrooms with both tubs and showers.

Silversea ships offer a wide choice of dining venues (some with a fee) designed to satisfy many tastes, whether you prefer sushi, foie gras or a great, thin-crust pizza.

Drinks are on the house, including a long list of fine wine pours. S.A.L.T., a new dining and culinary education concept, brings local tastes on board together with experts who share insight into each dish and beverage. The program also features culinary-focused excursions ashore.

Silversea's expedition ships are equipped for polar locales. On sailings in those regions, each passenger receives a free jacket to keep them warm and cozy.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

the most expensive cruise ship

Another of our top luxury cruise lines, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is proudly opulent. Floating palaces are its calling card, along with the most inclusive fares of all the luxury lines. Business-class airfare, pre-cruise luxury hotel stays and shore excursions in every port are on the long list of perks.

The goal is knock-you-off-your-feet luxury. If you don't get that point at first, look down at the many yards of Carrara marble under your feet, then gaze up at the Czech crystal chandeliers. Or spot the Picassos and Chagalls among your ship's stunning, mostly Latin-focused art collections.

The six 490- to 750-passenger ships in the Regent fleet get fancier as they get larger. On the three newest, Seven Seas Explorer, Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Grandeur everyone stays in a roomy suite with an oversized balcony and marble bathroom.

The top Regent Suites on these new ships are mansions at sea and come with solariums, private spas with saunas and steam rooms and Steinway pianos in their living rooms. They also have handmade beds that cost up to $200,000 apiece.

Lavishly decked-out restaurants, with cushy bars nearby, include Prime 7, a fan favorite for its classic steakhouse menu, including jumbo lump crab cakes, U.S.D.A. prime-aged beef and Alaskan king crab legs.

the most expensive cruise ship

Long considered one of the great luxury lines, if not the greatest, Crystal just resumed operations in 2023 after shutting down during the COVID-19 pandemic. And as we wrote about recently, it's as good as ever .

In the wake of its comeback, Crystal is operating just the two biggest ocean ships from its past: the 606-passenger Crystal Symphony and 740-passenger Crystal Serenity (though it already has plans for an expansion ). Both of the vessels, which globetrot around the world, are all-inclusive and on the glitzy side — perfect for a crowd looking for a throwback. Passengers make appearances walking down grand staircases dressed to the nines, meet for afternoon tea and dance the night away.

Everything operates in the upper-tier way, from the spa and expansive fitness offerings to the restaurants — which include a Nobu eatery.

Those booked in penthouses and higher-category suites receive service from a tuxedo-clad butler who will do everything from unpacking your luggage to helping you set up a private cocktail party. A particular perk is having the butler bring Nobu sushi on a silver tray.

the most expensive cruise ship

Owned by Carnival Corporation, Seabourn 's top-of-the-line, 264- to 600-passenger ships deliver comfortable, modern luxury that can be as fancy or casual as you like.

If you want to show off your heirloom jewels, go ahead, but on most nights, a jacket is optional in the ship's restaurants. If you prefer not to dress up for formal night, you can still eat well at casual alternatives.

High service is a trademark of this luxury cruise line. Your suite steward will draw you a bath scented with your choice of bath oil. For a snack, order the complimentary caviar.

Dining is over the top at the restaurants, such as the retro-chic steakhouses with menus created by famed chef Thomas Keller (of French Laundry fame). When you tire of prime beef, order lobster thermidor or sink into the delicious comfort of Keller's roast chicken. All dining is included in your fare.

Throughout the ship, complimentary spirits, fine wines and house Champagne flow freely. This leads to easy socializing in the bars and lounges on board.

The line's two newest ships, the 264-passenger Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, are built with a tough "polar class" design to operate in the ice-filled waters of the Arctic and Antarctica. They're equipped with state-of-the-art submarines for undersea views.

A 26-person expedition team runs the two dozen Zodiacs that get you up close to glaciers and icebergs.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

the most expensive cruise ship

Looking to sail through romantic French Polynesia in complete luxury? Look to South Pacific-based Paul Gauguin for an all-inclusive, high-end home base.

The ship is immersed in all things Polynesian, with a troupe of local performers on board to entertain guests with local song, dance and craft lessons.

Couples can embrace the romance of the region by participating in a Polynesian blessing ceremony. Paul Gauguin gives its guests special access to a secluded beach on Bora Bora and a private island off the coast of Taha'a, where you can indulge in water sports, a gourmet barbecue and bar service.

To make the most of the aquamarine waters, complimentary water sports, such as paddleboarding and kayaking, are available straight from the ship's marina and every guest receives snorkel gear for use during the cruise, free of charge.

On board, guests enjoy five-star French and Polynesian cuisine, with all beverages complimentary throughout the ship and in your in-room minifridge.

With 209 crew members on hand to serve 330 passengers, service is top-notch and full of Polynesian hospitality, but all gratuities are already included in your fare.

Not all cabins are suites, but the top suites on the ship come with butler service. Also, should you dare to consider the outside world, you can connect with friends and family back home with complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the ship.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

the most expensive cruise ship

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours puts the elegance into adventure with its two 228-passenger expedition yachts, Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II.

Sure, its ships have reinforced hulls capable of breaking through ice, but they also feature chic bars serving 130 different kinds of whiskey (all included in your fare) and high-end onboard spas (treatments cost extra, alas).

For small ships, Scenic's yachts still manage to offer five gourmet dining venues, plus additional private dining options (such as a chef's table or teppanyaki grill), room service and culinary masterclasses in a show kitchen.

Sample candied foie gras, daily risottos or sushi made with fish flown from Japan, all while sailing through remote waters. Wash it down with whatever you like because all but the most premium beverages are included.

After a long day of Zodiac, submersible or helicopter rides (yes, all these high-tech exploration toys are on board), you can retreat to your well-appointed suite, with distinct sleeping and living areas, plus a balcony.

Thoughtful touches include Illy coffee machines, Dyson hair dryers, remote-control adjustable beds, plentiful outlets and USB ports, and umbrellas and binoculars for use on your vacation. Did we mention you also have access to a butler for all your onboard needs?

Scenic's all-inclusive fares include dining and drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, airport transfers and shore excursions led by the line's knowledgeable expedition leaders.

Oceania Cruises

Sometimes luxury means more space to spread out and multiple onboard options for a truly outstanding meal.

That's the approach upscale cruise line Oceania Cruises takes with its fleet of seven 648- to 1,238-passenger ships (the last of which, Oceania Vista , just debuted in May 2023 and is its most elegant yet).

Foodies will drool over menus overseen by Master Chef Jacques Pepin in all-included venues specializing in French, Italian, Asian and steakhouse cuisine.

Cruisers truly passionate about food and wine will want to splurge on wine-paired dinners at La Reserve by Wine Spectator or enjoy a gourmet, multi-course menu with an intimate group at Privee.

Get hands-on cooking experience with a class in The Culinary Center or explore the food culture ashore with a Culinary Discovery Tour.

Oceania also embraces wellness with its Aquamar Spa and Vitality Center. Treat yourself to a decadent spa treatment or wellness-themed shore excursion, or take care of your body with complimentary fitness classes and plant-based menus at onboard restaurants.

Oceania's fares are not as inclusive as some of the small-ship lines mentioned above, but guests can choose a higher-priced fare that is more inclusive with the line's "simply MORE" promotion. These fares include free airfare and airport transfers, complimentary Wi-Fi and a choice of a select number of free excursions, as well as free specialty dining reservations, Champagne and wine.

the most expensive cruise ship

Viking does not like to call itself a luxury cruise line, but we'd definitely put it in that category for the inclusive fares, fine dining and smart design of its ocean-going ships.

Its 10 traditional cruise ships are nearly identical, each carrying 930 guests, while two expedition vessels carry 378 guests and combine elegant design with the latest technology in polar exploration.

Viking's fares are inclusive but not all-inclusive, and its ships sport clean Scandinavian design rather than opulent decor. Necessities such as Wi-Fi and self-serve laundry are complimentary, as are all nonalcoholic beverages and beer and wine with lunch and dinner.

Guests can enjoy dining in multiple onboard venues, plus room service, for no extra cost. Don't miss the Italian Manfredi's or a gorgeous afternoon tea spread in the glass-enclosed Wintergarden.

Cabins may not have an overtly opulent feel, but they have all the right touches, including balconies in every room, quiet-closing drawers, heated bathroom floors and plentiful USB ports and outlets.

The destination-focused cruise line adds as many days in port as it can to each itinerary and offers a free shore excursion in every port.

Viking ships have a large presence in Europe, sailing the Mediterranean and in northern Europe, but also explore the world from Alaska and the Caribbean to Asia and Australia.

Its expedition ships, Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis, explore Antarctica, as well as the Great Lakes and Canada.

The ships boast several expedition cruising firsts, including a boarding area for excursion craft that's inside the ship (rather than docked outside it) and cabins with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that slide open to let in the fresh air.

Like the ocean ships, they feature Scandinavian design, a glass-walled Explorers' Lounge and signature Viking restaurants Manfredi's and Mamsen's (offering Norwegian specialties).

Two Billionaires Just Bought Colorado’s Most Expensive Home (and This Is How Much They Paid)

By Katherine McLaughlin

Modern mountain home in aspen

Just a few weeks after an Aspen ranch sold for $77 million, earning the accolade as Colorado’s most expensive home ever purchased, another transaction has swooped in to steal the title. As the Wall Street Journal previously reported, the off-market deal was for an 11-bedroom mansion, sold by Patrick Dovigi, a former professional hockey player and now CEO of Green For Life Environmental Inc., and his wife, Fernanda Dovigi, an interior designer. The buyers, billionaires Steve Wynn, a real estate developer and art collector, and Thomas Peterffy, a financier and founder of Interactive Brokers, bought the home together. The deal just closed, Robb Report shares, with the pair paying $108 million for the residence.

Aspen colorado overlook

Aspen, Colorado

The 22,000-square-foot abode sits on four and a half acres at the base of Aspen’s Red Mountain. The home, which was built in 2006, is designed in the modern mountain style, defined by sloped roofs and an expansive glass façade. Photos published by the Wall Street Journal show interiors outfitted with stone-clad columns and timber trusses, reminiscent of the material palette found in the local landscape. There is also a guesthouse and heated outdoor pool.

Though now Colorado’s most expensive home, the property also represents the first nine-figure deal in the state. Aspen is one of the priciest markets in the Centennial State, and Woody Creek, a small town eight miles north of the city, boasts one of the most expensive zip codes in the country . According to the Wall Street Journal , it’s unclear why Wynn and Peterffy are purchasing the property together. It is reported that they’re friends and live close to each other in Palm Beach. In addition to their respective Florida abodes, Wynn also owns an apartment in Manhattan.

I work from a cruise ship for 3 months a year. Here's how I stay productive at sea.

  • Walter Biscardi runs his travel business remotely from cruise ships for three months each year.
  • He said WiFi reliability has improved, but video calls and finding power outlets can be challenging.
  • Biscardi recommends Virgin Voyages for remote workers because of the spaces to work and the WiFi.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Walter Biscardi, a 59-year-old travel agent based in Orlando. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I used to work in film, television, documentary, and marketing, and I ran two creative agencies in Atlanta for 25 years.

A few years ago, my wife and I turned my second passion, travel, into " Where's Walter Travel ." We specialize in travel planning services for cruises , group vacations, theme park tours, and company retreats.

We live in an Orlando rental, but I run the travel-planning business from a cruise ship for three months out of the year.

We started taking advantage of our remote working situation after the pandemic

In a few short years of working on cruise ships, I've noticed that more and more people are starting to do the same thing.

We predominantly cruise the Caribbean. Last year, our three months were spread over six different trips on the Royal Caribbean , Oceania , Virgin Voyages , and Carnival cruise lines. If it were up to me, I'd be at sea for six months a year, but my wife prefers three.

This year, we'll be back on Virgin Voyages in June and on the Sun Princess in October. We're planning a few more, too.

WiFi speed and reliability onboard ships have been game-changers

I don't always look for speed but rather consistency and reliability.

Even though the WiFi is reliable on most ships , it's still not perfect, and you need to manage your expectations. The WiFi on ships is satellite-based, so the signal will be slower if there's a lot of cloud cover. Rain may also temporarily cut it out completely.

The WiFi signal in rooms can be weak. When I get on board, I walk around public places, look at the ceiling, and find the repeaters , which amplify the router's signal . I park myself under a repeater to work, so at least I know I'm getting the fastest signal.

Video calls can be dicey, but voice calls over WiFi work well

Most of my work is using emails, social media apps, and a web browser, so I don't tend to have problems. The upload speed is the most difficult thing about working on a cruise ship.

Related stories

Working from a cruise ship might not be for you if you're required to upload a video to YouTube or be on video for 100% of your Zoom calls. Zoom with video turned off works well. I post TikToks all day, but uploading to YouTube will fail almost every time.

Turn off your cell service on the ship, even if you have unlimited roaming overseas. Phones use satellite maritime cellular, and it's ridiculously expensive. I've heard of people who have come home with $1,000 cellular bills because they didn't turn off their roaming.

I can typically make most of my calls over WiFi, but you won't be able to on some ships. Texting from ship to land usually works well if you're using the same type of phone as the person you're messaging, but when you're texting cross-platform, sometimes it doesn't work.

Finding power outlets can be challenging

Typically, if you need to put in a full day of work connected to power, you need to stay in your room. One tip to finding power when you're looking around public areas is to see where they plug in the vacuum cleaners.

I strongly recommend bringing a powerboard with multiple USB sockets. I have one with 10 USB connections, so I can charge my phone, GoPro, and other devices simultaneously.

Virgin Voyages ships are the most friendly for remote workers

The galley on a Virgin Voyages ship is set up like a coffee shop, with easily accessible power and USB sockets at the table. There are dozens of outlets, as they're inviting people to bring their laptops and work from the ship.

I usually upgrade to the premium WiFi option, which can cost anywhere from $19 to $39 per day on most lines, but Virgin only charges $10 per day to upgrade.

I work in an office at home, so working on a cruise is a big change

I operate at sea as I do on land, with the same office hours available to my clients other than when I know we're going on an excursion.

Cruise ships are comparable to remote working spaces, but they offer so much more. On a cruise, almost everything is included: breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, entertainment, and most amenities.

If I want to take a break from work, I go to the pool. When I finish for the day, I'll go to the theater to see a show.

Meeting places are usually free on a cruise ship. Generally, all you have to do is reserve a conference room. AV facilities are usually included too, although you may have to pay a setup fee.

Remember to be respectful — many people are on board for a vacation. I've been out by the pool and seen people taking business calls on speakerphone, which is ridiculously annoying.

I suggest picking at least one port on every cruise and make it a 'ship day'

About 75% of people will get off the ship at any port, so staying on board feels like you have the whole place to yourself.

Activities like the pools will still be open, and the spas will often discount their services by 20-40% on port days.

Of course, I still recommend getting off and exploring as much as possible — that's what cruises are for.
