Private beaches, high-end restaurants, and five-star hotels reinforce the image of seaside elegance and prestige.

2. saint-tropez, 3. cannes beaches, 5. hilltop village of eze, 6. villa & jardins ephrussi de rothschild, cap-ferrat, 8. cannes film festival, 9. antibes beaches, 10. beaulieu-sur-mer and villefranche-sur-mer, 11. île de porquerolles, 12. jazz à juan festival, 14. saint-raphaël, map of tourist attractions on the côte d'azur.
With its beaches, balmy weather, and charming Mediterranean character, Nice is the quintessential French Riviera resort town. The most famous street in Nice is the Promenade des Anglais, a gorgeous pedestrian area that follows the curve of the Baie des Anges beaches.
Since the Belle Epoque, the promenade has been graced by opulent buildings such as the Art Deco Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée resort hotel; the legendary Le Negresco hotel, known for its luxurious accommodations, fine dining, and cosmopolitan clientele; and the Villa Masséna, a 19th-century aristocratic mansion (now a museum of art and history) set in a Mediterranean garden.
The Promenade des Anglais attracts crowds for sunbathing on the beaches and strolling, rollerblading, or cycling along the promenade. There are also many cultural and historic sightseeing attractions nearby.
A traditional open-air Provençal market takes place at the Cours Saleya , steps away from the Quai des États-Unis (which is just off the Promenade des Anglais). Beneath colorful striped awnings, vendors sell fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables, and local artisan food products. The market is held daily, except on Mondays.
The Jardin Albert Ier is within easy walking distance of the Promenade des Anglais. This expansive garden was one of Nice's first public parks. In a delightful seaside location, the park features Mediterranean pine trees, aromatic roses, towering palms, and monumental fountains.
During summer, the garden's outdoor theater, the Theâtre de Verdure , hosts concerts and cultural performances.
This celebrated beach-holiday destination was once just a humble fishing village, but is now a glamorous beach resort (made famous by Brigitte Bardot in the 1950s). Nestled in a picturesque bay, Saint-Tropez has retained its quaint historic village, which easily charms visitors.
With its cobblestone streets and shady squares, the historic center of Saint-Tropez has an appealing old-world allure. Despite the fancy restaurants and fashion boutiques, there's still an authentic Provençal atmosphere. Visitors will see the town's elderly gentlemen playing pétanque , while villagers shop at traditional markets or chat at outdoor cafés.
Although there are still fishing boats in the Vieux Port (old harbor), you're more likely to find luxury yachts that belong to the jet-setting crowd. For tourists, the Vieux Port is a great place to stop for refreshments at a sunny café terrace.
The attractive Mediterranean scenery and chic ambience are the main attractions of this relaxing beach town . For those seeking a stylish spot on the French Riviera with sandy shoreline, Saint-Tropez is one of the best places to visit.
During the summer months, colorful parasols line the sandy beaches of Cannes, and beach lovers soak up the sun in classic French Riviera style. Most of the popular beaches in Cannes are found right off La Croisette Boulevard , the city's elegant main street.
Among its many tourist attractions , Cannes is prized for its exclusive private beaches. However, there are municipal beaches that charge a small fee ( Macé Beach and Zamenhof Beach , both sandy beaches with shallow waters).
There are also public beaches that offer free entry: Gazagnaire Beach , which is good for swimming; La Casino Beach , a long, wide stretch of sandy shoreline; and locals' favorite, Mouré Rouge Beach .
Most of the beaches have parasols and lounge chairs available to rent. Many beaches also have snack bars and lifeguards on duty during the high season.
To truly savor the luxurious Côte d'Azur lifestyle, visitors should indulge in seaside dining at one of the enticing gourmet restaurants or outdoor cafés along the Cannes beachfront.
Some of the most fashionable seaside restaurants in Cannes include the two-Michelin-starred La Palme d'Or at the luxurious Hôtel Martinez (73 Boulevard de la Croisette) and Le Park 45 , a gourmet restaurant that serves Mediterranean (Provençal & Italian) cuisine on a garden terrace at Le Grand Hotel (which also has a private beach club with a restaurant, Hyde Beach).
Trendy beachfront restaurants include CBeach (45 Boulevard de la Croisette), a private beach club with excellent amenities, and Palais Stéphanie Beach restaurant (50 Boulevard de la Croisette), which treats guests to delicious Mediterranean cuisine and sushi on shaded tables that overlook the beach.
Renowned for its prestigious yachting event and sublime natural scenery, Monaco has a special status on the Côte d'Azur. This small coastal city is its own principality with a royal family, epitomizing the glamour of the French Riviera. The palace of the royal family is located on what is fondly called " Le Rocher " ("The Rock"), a promontory overlooking the sea.
Tourists may visit the Palais Princier de Monaco (royal palace) to discover its treasures: a monumental Carrara marble staircase; precious 16th- and 17th-century frescoes depicting mythological scenes; the Mazarin Room, covered with ornate wood paneling; and the Throne Room, where official state events and ceremonies take place.
Other cultural highlights in Monaco include the cathedral ; the Chapelle de la Visitation , which houses a museum of religious art; the Oceanographic Museum in an amazing waterfront setting; and the Jardin Exotique , a gorgeous exotic garden with stunning sea views.
Another of the must-see attractions in Monaco is its emblematic harbor (Port Hercule), filled with luxury yachts. This enormous harbor is large enough to dock cruise ships. With its picturesque Mediterranean scenery and refreshing sea breezes, Port Hercule is a wonderful place for leisurely strolls or al fresco dining. Many of the waterfront restaurants have pleasant outdoor terraces.
A picturesque " village perché ," Eze is a gem of the Côte d'Azur. This charming medieval village is perched on a steep hilltop high above the Mediterranean Sea, with sweeping panoramas of the Cap-Ferrat coastline .
Wandering the narrow cobblestone streets of the village leads to wonderful discoveries, such as small art galleries, interesting artisan boutiques, and beautiful sea views. The village also has a lovely 12th-century church with an elegant neoclassical facade from the 18th century.
At the very top of the Eze hillside is the spectacular Jardin Exotique with a breathtaking outlook. On a clear day, the Exotic Garden affords 180-degree views of the coastline all the way from Italy to Saint-Tropez.
One of the attractions of Eze is a property called La Chèvre d'Or , which is a five-star hotel housed in a 14th-century château. The hotel occupies several buildings within the heart of the medieval village and has a Michelin-starred restaurant. With heavenly vistas of the coastline and its mesmerizing azure waters, the property's exquisite garden brims with fragrant roses, sweet jasmine, vibrant bougainvillea, shady trees, refreshing fountains, and striking contemporary art installations.
Just below the medieval village is the Fragonard Parfumeur perfume factory that utilizes aromatic flowers grown nearby in the Provence region. The Fragonard perfume factory is open to the public for guided tours.
For those who enjoy nature walks and hiking, a scenic trail begins near the Fragonard perfume factory, continues down the hillside, and leads to the beach, with incredible sea views along the way. This trail is known as the Nietzsche Path because it was a place of inspiration to the philosopher when he spent time in Eze. The hike down the trail takes about 45 minutes, whereas it is more than a one-hour trek returning (uphill) to the village.
Between Nice and Monaco, the Cap-Ferrat is a narrow peninsula with serene seaside scenery, overlooking the bays of Villefranche and Beaulieu. The coastline is dotted with fancy villas and vacation homes, although visitors rarely have a chance to see past the gated entryways.
One remarkable villa that's open to the public is the Rothschild Villa built for Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, the daughter of the wealthy banker Baron Alphonse de Rothschild. Upon inheriting her father's enormous fortune in 1905, Béatrice created an incomparable residence in a sublime setting on the tip of the Cap-Ferrat.
The villa was designed in the style of an Italian palazzo, with a facade of delicate pastel pink. Béatrice's exceptional taste is revealed throughout the interior and especially in the Grand Salon with its Louis XVI furnishings and sumptuous floral-motif decor. After touring the villa's interior, visitors should leave plenty of time to explore the grounds.
Wandering around the villa's magnificent gardens is a delightful experience. The eight distinct gardens include a formal French Garden, with musical fountains; a Spanish Garden, with trellised patios; a Rose Garden, with dozens of floral varieties; and a Japanese Garden featuring a traditional pavilion, wooden footbridge, and koi fish pond.
The Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild is open every day of the year for self-guided tours (with audio-guides). Visitors appreciate the villa's elegant tearoom , which serves lunch, coffee, and afternoon tea. The tearoom has a dining area with bay views and an outdoor terrace with tables shaded by orange trees and sun umbrellas. A boutique sells souvenirs, jewelry, postcards, and books about the French Riviera during the Belle Epoque.

The sunny seaside city of Menton boasts a sensational location (the closest town on the French Riviera to Italy) with a mild climate year-round. The warm weather allows vibrant flowers and citrus fruits to flourish. In this lush Mediterranean environment, Menton's Vieille Ville (Old Town) has a distinctive Italian influence.
Visitors can begin a tour along the Rue des Logettes and the narrow Rue Longue , passing the town's ancient fortifications. A flight of steps (Rampes de Saint Michel) leads up to the Place de la Conception terrace with marvelous views of the sea. On the left stands the 17th-century Parish Church of Saint Michel with a winged altar created by Manchello in 1569. Farther up is the 17th-century Jesuit Chapel of the Conception .
For those in search of seaside relaxation, the Plage des Sablettes (beach) is ideal for sunbathing or taking a dip in the calm, temperate waters.
Menton is classified as a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire (City of Art and History) because of its cultural attractions. Not to be missed are the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Palais de Carnolès), which presents a collection of European paintings from the 19th century to contemporary pieces, and the Musée Jean Cocteau (at Menton's harbor), which displays hundreds of pieces painted by Jean Cocteau, who created many noteworthy artworks here during the 1950s.
Another highlight of Menton is its splendid gardens, including the Jardins Biovès , filled with sculptures, fountains, exotic trees, and flowering plants, and the Jardin Serre de la Madone , classified as a Historic Monument and a Jardin Remarquable (Remarkable Garden), which dazzles visitors with its reflecting pools, rare plants, and landscaped terraces.
The Jardin Botanique Val Rahmeh is another luxuriant green space. This lovely botanical garden is planted with a wide variety of palm trees and tropical vegetation including avocado, banana, and papaya trees.
The most glamorous event of the French Riviera calendar, the Festival de Cannes draws movie stars and film producers from all over the world. While the actors and actresses strut the red carpet, locals and visitors watch as the scene unfolds at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès .
This prestigious film festival is widely attended by cinema industry professionals and is well known for recognizing new cinema talent. It is always exciting to find out who wins the Palme d'Or and Grand Prix awards .
During the festival, there is a special buzz in the air. Every corner of Cannes seems to be part of the event, and giant billboards can be seen throughout the city, paying tribute to international stars and famous film legends.
Antibes is an atmospheric seaside town, surrounded by gorgeous beaches in an unspoiled natural environment. The neighboring community of Juan-les-Pins was named after the groves of pine trees that flourish in this region.
The atmospheric Old Town (Vieil Antibes) and the beautiful coastline are the top attractions of Antibes and Juan-les-Pins . To appreciate the scenery, visitors can hike along the Chemin des Douaniers , a 3.7-kilometer trail (beginning at the Plage de la Garoupe) that offers invigorating exercise and majestic sea views.
Beach lovers have many choices, from large public beaches to private beaches with restaurants overlooking the waves. There are two main areas of beaches around Antibes: the Cap d'Antibes peninsula and Juan-les-Pins . The beaches in these areas are renowned for their fine sandy shores.
For those who enjoy excellent French cuisine, the Antibes and Juan-les-Pins area has many fine-dining establishments and chic bistros with outdoor terraces.
This area also boasts top-notch resort hotels such as the legendary Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc , known for its refined accommodations and luxurious amenities (spa, seaside swimming pool, and Michelin-starred restaurant); the five-star Cap d'Antibes Beach Hotel , which has a private beach; and the Hôtel Belles Rives , which occupies a 1920s Art Deco building with a piano bar that is listed as one of the Cafés Historiques et Patrimoniaux d'Europe .
Closer than 10 kilometers (under a 30-minute drive) from Nice are two quaint seaside villages: Villefranche-sur-Mer, with a cheerful harbor, and Beaulieu-sur-Mer, an idyllic vacation resort. Both destinations rank among the top day trips from Nice .
In a lush Mediterranean environment of palm trees and vibrant flowers, Villefranche-sur-Mer is distinguished by its colorful waterfront buildings and a remarkable historic chapel, the Chapelle de Saint Pierre des Pecheurs . This 16th-century chapel has a surprising interior covered in frescoes that Jean Cocteau painted in 1957. The whimsical dream-like murals illustrate biblical themes, as well as typical scenes of the fishing village.
Just four kilometers away from Villefranche-sur-Mer, Beaulieu-sur-Mer is worth visiting to see the Villa Kérylos . This stately waterfront palace is a close replica of an ancient Greek nobleman's house (circa 2nd-century BC), complete with decor and furnishings based on items found at archaeological sites.
With gentle turquoise waters lapping against its soft sandy shores, the Île de Porquerolles has a dreamy, tropical feel. Although it's only a 10-minute boat ride from the French Riviera coastline, Porquerolles Island gives the impression of being much farther away.
The northern side of the island has fantastic beaches, while the southern side features steep cliffs and secluded hiking trails alongside creeks. Other popular activities during summertime are sailing, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
Nestled in the center of the island is the little village of Porquerolles, with a wide selection of hotels and restaurants.
To arrive at the Ile de Porquerolles, take a shuttle boat from Hyères (about a one-hour drive from Saint-Tropez or less than a 30-minute drive from Toulon .)
For music lovers, attending the Jazz à Juan festival in July is one of the most exciting things to do on the French Riviera. Set in a spectacular outdoor setting, this renowned festival presents world-class talent, including famous performers and up-and-coming new artists. Concerts represent a range of musical genres, such as New Orleans Jazz, Latin Jazz, Swing, and Blues.

One of the top day trips from Marseille , Cassis is a quaint fishing village with colorful waterfront houses and a picturesque bay. The lovely setting attracted many artists in the early 20th century.
Cassis, along with Saint-Tropez, is considered part of both the Provence region and the French Riviera. As a traditional Provençal town, Cassis features narrow cobblestone streets, tree-shaded squares, and many restaurants with sunny outdoor terraces.
Summertime vacationers appreciate the nearby beaches, which are just a few kilometers outside of the town. There is also a beach within the town.
Sunshine, sandy beaches, and a lively city center await visitors to the resort town of Saint-Raphaël, located between Cannes and Saint-Tropez. The town has a traditional Provençal feel, with its pleasant pedestrian streets, old stone buildings, and daily open-air market. The well-maintained beaches are great for sunbathing and water sports.

15 Best Things to Do in Côte d’Azur (France)
On the French Riviera you’ll tread a path beaten by some of the 20th-century’s most illustrious movie stars and painters.
There’s a glamour about the region that no destination in the world can equal.
You’ll glimpse this on the promenades in Cannes and Nice , or at the Place du Casino in Monaco .
Some of the plush villas built for mega-rich holidaymakers at the start of the 20th century now also open their doors to the public.
There’s a subtler beauty to the Côte d’Azur at stylish seaside resorts like Villefranche-sur-Mer, or perched medieval villages above the coast, adored by 19th and 20th-century artists for their ethereal light.
Lets explore the best things to do in the Côte d’Azur :
- 1. Sights in Nice
There’s a fee things that you can’t leave Nice without doing: A wander through the ravine-like alleys of the old town is top of the list, and while you’re there you have to potter around the colourful stalls of the daily fruit and flower market at Cours Salaya at the foot of the hill.
And naturally, if you want to sample an atmosphere that has beguiled tourists since the 1700s, Place Masséna and the legendary Promenade des Anglais need to be on your itinerary.
Then, for unbeatable photo opportunities get up to the Parc de la Colline du Château, between the port and the old town.
You can take the steps or an elevator to look over the harbour, beach or old town and know you’ve arrived on the Côte d’Azur.
This ultra-wealthy principality in France’s far south-eastern corner is tiny, but Monaco’s cultural impact is impossible to measure.
Scenes like the Place du Casino, the geometric mosaic of sandy apartment blocks from the Marina and the Palais des Princes are familiar to all.
They conjure memories of the Jet Set, Princess Grace and decades of the mythic Grand Prix.
Another personality forever associated with Monaco is the maritime explorer Jacques Cousteau, director of the cliff-side Oceanographic Museum for more than thirty years up to 1987.
Almost 500 metres above the sea, but only a short way in from the coast, the scenery from this village is extraordinary.
The pale ochre tower of the Notre Dame de l’Assomption is like a beacon, visible from coastal roads for miles.
Èze almost defies logic, with stone steep alleys that twist through tunnels and up steep stairways.
As you go you’ll be hit by incredible views of the little bay hundreds of metres below and the azure Mediterranean.
The Jardin Exotique has cactus arrangements chiselled into the slope, with panoramas that will make your head swim.
4. La Croisette, Cannes
Cannes has a grace and sophistication that even the hordes of tourists can’t diminish.
And La Croisette also happens to be one of the loveliest urban beaches on the Côte d’Azur, a long ribbon of golden sand with moderate waves.
The public part towards the port gets very busy in summer, but many are happy just to wander along the promenade, between the Mediterranean and the long row of fashion emporia next to the foreshore.
Keep going to the Vieux Port to gasp at the luxury yachts and stop at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the stars come for the Cannes Film Festival every May.
5. Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat
Set high on the isthmus near the top of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is one of the Côte d’Azur’s most storied mansions.
It was built at the start of the 20th century for Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, of the Rothschild and Ephrussi banking familes.
The villa looks out over the Mediterranean from three sides, contains a tremendous assortment of valuable art and decorative items, and, best of all, has an ensemble of nine gardens listed as one of France’s “Jardins Remarquables”. Each one has a different theme, from the Japanese garden with its pavilion, to the rose garden, awash with pink flowers in the summer.
The interior is as palatial as you’d imagine, flaunting the owner’s taste for the 18th century: Even the carpets in the Grand Salon were commissioned by Louis XIV and Louis XV.
6. Le Suquet, Cannes
The city’s old quarter is a break from the glitz of La Croisette, and is set on steep slope with streets so tight that you have even have to shuffle sideways at times.
Rue Saint-Antoine is a good place to start, where almost every building is grounded by a restaurant.
Originally this part of Cannes was a fishing community set within the walls of the castle.
You can get up to this landmark, which now hosts a museum with an eclectic collection of primitive art from around the world, ancient artefacts from the Mediterranean and a large assortment of musical instruments.
The 16th-century church next door is a delight, but the best reason to make the climb is to sit and regard the port and Croisette far below.
7. Saint-Paul-de-Vence
Like many of the older settlements on the French Riviera, Saint-Paul-de-Vence rests safely on rocky spur a couple of kilometres in from the sea.
It’s medieval village, and it takes conservation seriously, banning vehicles belonging to non-residents, who have to park and walk in.
Slip on some comfy shoes, stroll the streets full of art galleries and artisan boutiques, and survey the two pine cloaked valleys from the ramparts.
Several cultural giants from the 20th century lived here, like the writer James Baldwin, the actor Donald Pleasance and Marc Chagall, who was one of many painters to call Saint-Paul-de-Vence “home” for a time.
8. Sentier du Littoral, Cap d’Antibes
Meandering for five kilometres along the edge of the Cap d’Antibes, the Sentier du Littoral is held as one of the world’s great coastal footpaths.
The entire length is paved and accessible, and all along the seascapes are like something out of a dream.
You’ll pause every few strides to look over the glistening waters of the Baie de la Garoupe, out to the Lérins Islands or back towards the Alps, just visible in the far distance.
In places the path is so exposed that you’ll be blasted by the wind and the waves will smash against the rocks, while in others it’s impossible to resist stepping down to the shallow waters to dip your feet in the sea.
9. Musée Marc Chagall, Nice
Of the many painters who fell in love with the matchless light and colours in the South of France, Marc Chagall is among the most important.
He spent decades on the French Riviera and this incredible museum with exquisite gardens was set up under his supervision.
It holds more than 400 paintings, pastels, gouaches and drawings by Chagall, but the most spectacular works, and the reason the museum was created, are the 17 paintings depicting Old and New Testament stories.
These are displayed in two galleries, one for each testament.
Résistance, Résurrection, Libération here is a triptych, with each panel completed in a different decade before and after the Second World War.
10. Lérins Islands
If you’re overwhelmed by the throngs in Cannes, this tranquil archipelago is just a short ferrry trip away.
The main destination will be Île Sainte-Marguerite, with aromatic pine forest criss-crossed by a web of walking trails.
See the Royal Fort, which was a prison in the 17th century and held the Man in the Iron Mask until his death in 1703. There’s a maritime museum here with an exciting set of artefacts recovered from the litany of shipwrecks in the seas around these straits.
Bring a picnic and your swimwear and you can spend the rest of the day lounging in the sun and bathing in the coves on the southeast side of the island.
11. Villefranche-sur-Mer
Between Nice and Monaco is one of the prettiest of the smaller resorts on the Côte d’Azur.
It’s in a long recess in the coast between Cap de Nice and Cap-Ferrat, granting the beach crystalline waters and providing some of the best snorkelling conditions in the region.
The harbour is extremely chic and sophisticated with houses in ochre tones in front of shiny yachts and motorboats.
The quayside is one long line of restaurants, and as you dine nobody will blame you if you’re distracted by the yachts, the rugged hillside and the shimmering waters.
12. Massif de l’Esterel
The landscapes around the city of Fréjus are made up of strange peaks with a strange red hue, which almost makes them seem intimidating.
This rock is volcanic porphyry, and at sunset it has an almost supernatural glow.
You can see much of this scenery without ever having to leave your car, but if you buy a map from the tourist office at Agay Plage there’s a network of trails to ramble.
These can be pretty steep, climbing a few hundred metres in just a short distance, and you need a head for heights.
But the panoramas, such as those at Cap Roux, will make you forget your labours.
These treks are best attempted in early summer, while later in the season many prefer the circuitous D559 in the car with the benefit of air-conditioning.
13. Port Grimaud
This district on the water in the town of Grimaud may look historic, but was actually laid out in 1966 by the architect and urban planner François Spoerry.
The buildings are in the neo-renaissance style and sit on little fingers of land next to water channels.
With its ornate bridges and arcade palazzi Port Grimaud isreminiscent of Venice, and you can spend several hours either ambling along the 12 kilometres of quays or discovering Port Grimaud from the water.
What will strike you is the sense of peace, which is also what attracts the celebrities and tycoons wealthy enough to afford a home here.
14. Villa Kérylos, Beaulieu-sur-Mer
Part of a set of exquisite mansions around Cap-Ferrat is this Greek-style villa built for the archaeologist and statesman Theodore Reinach, whose wife Fanny Kann belonged to the wealthy Ephrussi dynasty.
It was designed with the help of the historian Emmanuel Pontremoli, who was inspired by the 2nd-century villas for the Greek nobility on the Island of Delos.
Villa Kérylos meshes a close approximation of ancient architecture with Belle Époque luxury and flair.
The mosaics, columns , frescoes, windows and furniture are wonderful, as is the sight of the Mediterranean from the terrace in the gardens.
15. Traditional Dishes
Many world-renowned French classics were conceived in this small corner of the country: Bouillabaisse, the seafood stew, is from Marseille, on the western edge of the region.
Recipes can vary from restaurant to restaurant, but it will always contain a blend of fish and seafood including scorpionfish, conger, sea robin, mussels and crabs.
In the summer the world-famous salad niçoise hits the spot, with egg, tuna, potatoes and green beans.
Then on cooler winter days you can opt for ratatouille, the satisfying vegetable stew with tomatoes, courgette, aubergine and peppers.
And of course, one of the typical sights in Nice is of vendors cooking and serving socca, a crispy pancake made with chickpea flour.

Indian In Space After 40 Years: Courtesy Blue Origin, India Has Its First 'Space Tourist'
B lue Origin's latest mission, namely, Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission, saw the spacecraft launch into space with its six new privileged tourists. The highlight of this lift-off was that one of the space tourists was an Indian.
The Indian Space Tourist
Gopi Thotakura, Chief Operating Officer at Asian Infrastructure, made history by being the first ever Indian to be a space tourist.
Interestingly, this is more monumental than understood, as, it is for the first time, an Indian has ventured into the first into space after 40 years. Before it was the legendary Indian Army's Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma who braced the world, away and outside, to mark a monumental moment in the country's history.
It is to be noted that astronaut Kalpana Chawla, although Indian-born, was an American citizen. Meanwhile, Sunita Williams, who is part Indian (ancestry), is an American citizen.
This Blue Origin mission was the Jeff Bezos company's seventh mission involving humans. The mission lifted off from the southern US state of Texas.
The Billionaire Space Club
Thotakura started his academic life in the city of Banglore at Sarala Birla Acedemy. He later went on to earn a degree in aeronautical science and an MBA. Thotakura has a background in aviation and has an FAA Commercial Pilot's Certificate from the US FAA.
The era of space frenzy has seen major billionaires jump into the fray, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his, British billionaire Richard Branson, and Elon Musk with his SpaceX project has made waves in the market that was and still is largely dominated by government and international collaboration between nations, including the US's National Aeronautics and Space Administration, or Nasa, Japan's Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or Jaxa, and Europe's European Space Agency, or ESA.
Blue Origin successfully launches its first crewed mission since 2022
Blue Origin has successfully completed its NS-25 mission, resuming crewed flights for the first time in nearly two years .
The mission brought six tourist crew members to the edge of space, including artist and former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight. In 1961, Dwight was selected by President John F. Kennedy to be the country’s first Black astronaut candidate, but he never made it to space until today. Other passengers include software engineer and entrepreneur Ken Hess; retired accountant Carol Schaller; Sylvain Chiron, founder of brewery Brasserie Mont Blanc; aviator Gopi Thotakura; and venture capitalist Mason Angel of Industrious Ventures.
“I thought the whole idea of going to space with Blue Origin was a fascinating last chapter,” Dwight said in a Blue Origin promotional video . “I really, really want to do this because each person who goes up there all of a sudden has a totally different perspective of this little place here.”
Soon, Ed Dwight will complete a mission that began 63 years ago. Watch: https://t.co/TH41xP0MkB pic.twitter.com/aNmFjltM6z — Blue Origin (@blueorigin) May 19, 2024
The New Shepard rocket and crew capsule have safely returned to Earth.
Blue Origin — the private space company founded by Jeff Bezos — paused launches after the NS-22 mission experienced an anomaly in August 2022, causing the mission to abort after liftoff .
The company worked with the Federal Aviation Administration to identify 21 corrective actions before the next New Shepard launch. The rocket returned to operation in December 2023 in an unmanned launch that brought 33 cargo payloads into space.
As NS-25 naming suggests, today marks the New Shepard’s 25th mission, and it’s the seventh mission with humans aboard. Today’s flight brings Blue Origin to a total number of 37 human passengers flown to space.

ODIONGAN, Romblon (PIA) -- The Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) is gearing up to construct a solar-powered multi-purpose building on the picturesque Cresta de Gallo Island in San Fernando, Romblon.
The department together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the local government of San Fernando already conducted an information education campaign regarding the project.
Cresta de Gallo, spanning 4.5 hectares of forest land in the Sibuyan Sea, beckons visitors with its pristine white sands and azure waters. Accessible solely by motorboat from San Fernando, the island offers a serene escape, despite lacking in amenities such as electricity, potable water, and restrooms.
The lack of facilities prompted the local government to embark on plans to enhance the island's infrastructure and amenities.
Jerome Madrona, the Municipal Tourism Officer of LGU San Fernando, envisions the development of Cresta de Gallo as a boon for both the local community and the municipality, potentially serving as a pivotal hub for tourism activities.
While undertaking these developments, government agencies are committed to ensuring sustainability and environmental preservation. Through the use of eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient technologies, authorities aim to safeguard Cresta de Gallo's natural beauty and marine biodiversity.
"This holistic approach ensures that the improvement of Cresta de Gallo not only benefits the community but also contributes to the long-term conservation of Cresta de Gallo's marine biodiversity," Madrona emphasized.
The island's beautification aims to increase the number of tourists visiting, thereby expanding livelihood opportunities for the residents of the town of San Fernando. It is expected to create new jobs such as tour guides, boatmen, and other related roles in the tourism industry. (PJF/PIA MIMAROPA - Romblon)

Blue Origin Launches Its First Crewed Flight Since 2022
Aboard was ed dwight, the first black astronaut candidate..
Blue Origin has been at the forefront of pushing forward “space tourism.” While the space agency certainly has its competitors – like SpaceX , for starters – no other company is as solely focused on sending paying civilians to space .
On Sunday, Blue Origin pulled off its first crewed mission in nearly two years. The NS-25, a space tourist mission, took off from West Texas using its New Shepard rocket. The 11-minute flight allowed the six passengers to briefly unbuckle their seatbelts and experience zero gravity before returning to Earth.

Gopi Thotakura Becomes 1st Indian Space Tourist on Blue Origin's Private Astronaut Launch
Published By : Pragati Pal

United States of America (USA)

Gopi Thotakura was selected as one of the six crew members for the NS-25 mission, making him the first Indian space tourist and the second Indian to venture into space after the Indian Army's Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984
Gopi Thotakura, an entrepreneur and a pilot, on Sunday became the first Indian to venture into space as a tourist aboard Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin’s NS-25 mission.
Thotakura was selected as one of the six crew members for the NS-25 mission, making him the first Indian space tourist and the second Indian to venture into space after the Indian Army’s Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984.
Blue Origin’s seventh human flight, NS-25, lifted off from Launch Site One in West Texas on Sunday morning, the company announced on social media.
“Today, Blue Origin successfully completed its seventh human spaceflight and the 25th flight for the New Shepard programme.
“Our astronaut crew included: Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L. Hess, Carol Schaller, Gopi Thotakura, and former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight, who was selected by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 as the nation’s first Black astronaut candidate but never had the opportunity to fly,” the company said in a statement.
New Shepard has now flown 37 people into space, including today’s crew, it said.
“A big thank you to our astronaut customers for the opportunity to provide this life-changing experience,” said Phil Joyce, Senior Vice President, New Shepard. “Each of you are pioneers helping to advance our mission to build a road to space for the benefit of Earth,” Shepard added.
This mission was the seventh human flight for the New Shepard programme and the 25th in its history. To date, the programme has flown 31 humans above the Karman line, the proposed conventional boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.
New Shepard is a fully reusable sub-orbital launch vehicle developed for space tourism by Blue Origin.
According to Blue Origin, “Gopi is a pilot and aviator who learned how to fly before he could drive.” Gopi, 30, co-founded Preserve Life Corp, a global centre for holistic wellness and applied health located near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
In addition to flying jets commercially, he pilots bush, aerobatic, and seaplanes, as well as gliders and hot air balloons, and has served as an international medical jet pilot.
A lifelong traveller, his most recent adventure took him to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
Andhra Pradesh-born Thotakura is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
During the mission, the crew soared to more than three times the speed of sound. The rocket vaulted the capsule past the Kármán line, an area 100 kilometers above Earth’s surface that is widely recognized as the altitude at which outer space begins – but there’s a lot of gray area, CNN reported.
At the peak of the flight, passengers experienced a few minutes of weightlessness and striking views of Earth through the cabin windows, it added.
During the flight, each astronaut carried a postcard to space on behalf of Blue Origin’s foundation, Club for the Future.
This programme gives students access to space on Blue Origin’s rockets, including an all-digital method to create and send postcards. The Club’s mission is to inspire and mobilise future generations to pursue careers in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) for the benefit of Earth.
From an environmental standpoint, nearly 99 per cent of New Shepard’s dry mass is reused, including the booster, capsule, engine, landing gear, and parachutes.
New Shepard’s engine is fuelled by highly efficient liquid oxygen and hydrogen. During the flight, the only byproduct is water vapour with no carbon emissions, the company earlier said.
Blue Origin released the NS-25 mission patch. A few of the symbols embedded include: The Gemini spacecraft represents Dwight’s aerospace training era. The hand lifting of the crew capsule is a nod to his extensive artwork.
The sunrise represents Angel and Schaller’s desire to experience the overview effect. The mountains symbolise Schaller, Thotakura, and Chiron’s passion for climbing and skiing.
Jeff Bezos’ space company had paused its suborbital tourism programme following a liftoff malfunction of the New Shepard rocket. In September 2022, an uncrewed flight of New Shepard ended in flames around a minute after liftoff.
